I Remember You: Episode 1

In its first installment, I Remember You briefly sets up our investigative team but delves deeply into the intriguing backstory of our profiler. I can see glimpses of the past characters Seo In-gook has played, yet he portrays a different kind of genius, a different delivery of comedy while exuding his characteristic charisma. Despite all the confusing contradictive adjectives that described this drama in the promos, it’s got a nice balance of genre fusion so far to keep us on our toes. The mystery, thrill, romance, comedy, dark, and light are all promising. I just hope that these promises are ones they intend to keep.

EPISODE 1: “All children’s stories begin with their parents”

A man looks through the Bangbae-dong murder case file, and he introduces the story with a voiceover: “Every story has a beginning and an end. What will my story be? A story that began but has stopped without reaching its end. But someone is asking that my story continue, and I intend to respond to that request without knowing who that someone is. So my halted story continues…”

An investigation team arrives at the site of another murder, which resembles the Bangbae-dong one. They discuss the possibility of a serial killer and mention that they’ll be meeting their new team leader on site today.

When they enter the room, a man stands with his back to them, and the team wonders if this is their new team leader. Then, he turns around, and our heroine — CHA JI-AN (Jang Nara) — instantly recognizes him and thinks to herself, “It’s that jerk.”

The supposed team leader suspects the team is here because of the connection to the Bangbae-dong murder, and he confirms that this murder is from the same suspect. There isn’t much evidence, but he claims this suspect has a signature — the team just needs to find it. He asks for the list of suspects, but the team comes up empty due to the lack of evidence and witnesses.

Continuing with his analysis, he identifies the murderer’s signature for the team: both victims had connections to people with yachts. In a scolding tone, he tells the team, “With this signature and clean swipe of evidence, the suspect is not some fantasy killer but someone with significant power.”

While the rest of her team dumbfoundedly listens to him rattle on, Ji-an silently watches him with an intent gaze, thinking, “I’ve waited and waited, and now finally, this man, Lee Hyun, is in front of me.”

We see a new suited man approaching the crime scene, and meanwhile, LEE HYUN (Seo In-gook) asks the team if they have any questions. They have plenty: How did he get the yacht information? What about the signature? There wasn’t anything in the Bangbae-dong case file, right?

Suddenly, Hyun stops the chatter and silently points to the roof. The team is wide-eyed and all ears, when suddenly a man greets them from behind. He’s the new lead detective for the Bonchon special investigative unit 1, KANG EUN-HYUK (Lee Chun-hee).

Confused, the team turns around to face the mysterious man with all the answers, but he’s gone. They don’t find him anywhere in the room, and Ji-an runs out to find him casually walking away.

The rest of the team wonder who this man was. Definitely not the team leader (to which Team Leader Kang interjects that he is the team leader), but possibly the suspect. They follow Ji-an out and leave one member to check the identity of this new team leader.

Ji-an sees Hyun leave in a taxi with a smirk and follows it on foot. Her team members wonder if they, too, have to run after the taxi. They should, but… running is hard.

Hyun sees Ji-an running after his taxi and asks the driver to change his speed. He slows down and speeds up upon request, entertaining Lee Hyun as he watches her in earnest pursuit. She shouts his name, and that catches him off-guard.

Ji-an runs around the corner and straight into Hyun. She looks up triumphantly then pulls away, realizing their proximity. Hyun pulls her back from falling, right back to their closeness, before she pushes away. Then he asks if she knows him, and this time, Ji-an smirks back at him.

Flashback to the past twenty years. We see young Ji-an and older Ji-an following Lee Hyun, and she narrates, “I’ve known this jerk for 20 years — no, I’ve been stalking this jerk for 20 years, and he still doesn’t know who I am.”

Back to the present, Hyun asks, “Is it you?” Ji-an slowly approaches him and swiftly handcuffs him, apologizing and saying that she doesn’t have any more energy to chase him. In the interrogation, Hyun explains that he received the Bangbae-dong case via email and was merely fulfilling a request for help on the case.

Still suspicious, investigative team member SON MYUNG-WOO (Min Sung-wook) asks why he fled the scene. He shrugs that his work was done and didn’t feel the urge to continue conversing with incompetent investigators.

Another member MIN SEUNG-JOO (Kim Jae-young) asks how he could analyze the crime scenes so comprehensively. Hyun responds that there are average people, then there are people above and — looking at Myung-woo – below. Heh.

Their final team member, CHOI EUN-BOK (Son Seung-woon) enters the interrogation room to confirm that Hyun is not their suspect. He flew in from the United States and has a criminal justice background — everything matches up.

The team tries to keep him for further investigation, but he has enough counts against them — arrest without evidence, the scratch on his wrist from the handcuffs — to be let free. Eun-bok asks one last question on how he found his way to the crime scene today, and Hyun matter-of-factly states that the Bangbae-dong evidence guided him there.

Ji-an insists that they need to investigate Lee Hyun further, but they run into higher authorities, who confirm Hyun’s release. Team Leader Kang tries to introduce himself again, but Ji-an follows Hyun and the team disperses before he gets the chance.

Ji-an slips into the elevator with Hyun and asks him the real reason he came to Korea. Hyun says that maybe he’ll tell her if she explains how she knows him. He looks carefully at her face, sensing some familiarity but not knowing from where.

She disses him for his weak memory as a profiler, and he comes back by saying that he probably had no reason to remember her. As he walks away, Ji-an warns him not to overstep his responsibilities as a consultant to the case.

Looking back at the building, Hyun ponders over her question, the real reason for his arrival. It started with an email.

We flash back to the first scene, Hyun looking through case’s evidence and sensing some connection to his buried past. He closes his eyes to recall the memory and recognizes it as the time when he lost his father and younger brother in his childhood. This case is an invitation.

Hyun takes the earliest plane to Korea, and upon his arrival, he sees the numbers, letters, and signs at the airport as codes. He realizes that the evidence from the Bangbae-dong site included flag signaling (semaphore), which translates to map coordinates that lead him to the next murder site.

He wonders, “Who is it? Who is sending me these messages? Could that person and that child still be alive?” This is why he’s returned: He has some homework to solve and a person to find.

He returns to his old home and relives some moments of his childhood. He imagines his younger self with his brother and father, and he also remembers his younger self discovering his dead father. “The place I grew up, the place I buried my memories, the place and pivotal time that shaped my soul. Here, I continue my story.”

Throwback to 1996. Hyun’s father (cameo by Jeon Gwang-ryul) finds him burying something under a tree and asks him to help unpack in their new home. His younger brother runs out and throws a small tantrum because he can’t find his sketchbook and crayons. Hyun gives his father a look and runs in to help his brother.

Curious about what his son was burying, he searches the area and finds an animal’s paw. He’s slightly taken aback and turns around to find little Hyun looking at him. Hyun explains that when he found the animal, it was dead.

In his professional attire, Dad walks to a prison. Inside a cell, a prisoner (cameo by D.O.) asks the guard to open the window, suggesting that he get new aftershave. The guard refuses, and when Dad enters the cell, he finds the prisoner opening the window with the handcuffed guard squirming on the floor.

Dad records the prisoner’s statement about his mother’s abuse, but he stops him. He replays the recordings from the past two weeks, which tell of a grandfather and uncle, but he’s never had any of these family members.

He anticipates that the prisoner will tell him his real story one day. The prisoner responds with an eerie smile, curious about what Dad is looking for. “I merely wondered why a person would kill another human and why that’s wrong. I was quite an ordinary child who wondered these things.”

On his way home, police officers recognize Dad as the police chief and greet him warmly. They warn him about a dog thief in the area, and a flicker of fear flashes in Dad’s eyes. When he arrives home, he finds Hyun sitting outside in the dark, giving him an emotionless stare. Then he jolts awake, having fallen asleep at his desk while doing work.

He’s surprised to see Hyun at his side with a mug for him. Noticing Hyun’s scan of the criminals’ photos, Dad quickly collects them. Hyun comments that they all look so ordinary, and Dad responds, “Evil hides in the ordinary.” As we see the handcuffed prisoner being led out of his cell, Dad continues, “The cruelest person could have an angel’s face, so be careful of strangers.”

Dad also requests that Hyun be more childlike and ordinary. To that, Hyun asks to go to the amusement park. From now on, he vows that he won’t clothe and bathe Min (his younger brother), nor will he drop off and pick up his brother from school. He won’t do housework, he’ll forget about the bills so that their energy and gas shut off, he won’t make his father’s coffee, and he’ll just play with robots in ignorance. Ha.

Regretting his request, Dad drinks his coffee and compliments his son’s barista skills. Hyun reminds Dad that he’ll be late for work, and he reminds forgetful Dad to take his jacket and briefcase. Before Dad leaves, Hyun asks, “Why would a person kill another human? And why is that wrong?” Dad’s face falls and heart sinks.

Back to the present. Team Leader Kang finally gets a chance to properly introduce himself, but the rest of the team pays no attention. Each member thinks about Hyun’s information: the Bangbae-dong evidence that led him to the next location, the signature, his profiling skills, his smirk.

Team Leader Kang finishes his introduction and claps for himself. He turns the focus onto the case and mentions Lee Hyun, which gets the team’s attention. Then he anticlimactically ponders who Lee Hyun was. Ha, I love this guy.

In his old home, Hyun looks through boxes and finally find the sketchbooks. The drawings are surprisingly gruesome for such a young age, and he finds the one that resembles a picture from the Bangbae-dong evidence files. Interesting.

In the office, the team continues to wonder about this mysterious person at the site. Myung-woo jealously undermines all the credentials attached to Hyun, but Eun-bok confirms that it’s all true. Hyun is a professor in criminal justice and even wrote a book on criminology.

Team Leader Kang suggests that they put down their pride and officially ask Hyun for assistance, to which Ji-an immediately agrees. She suspects that Hyun anticipates this request because he flew all the way to Korea. She volunteers to request his assistance.

Ji-an calls Hyun, who picks up while cleaning his house. He knows that she’s calling to request his assistance and asks if they gained any more leads. Before she answers, he suspects that they haven’t gotten anywhere, since she’s calling for his assistance. Ha, you smartass.

She requests to meet with him in person, but Hyun declines because… he feels like it. He asks that she request nicely, but when she does, he still declines. Ji-an swears for a second but holds her tongue. He quickly hangs up, and she vows to catch him the next time he trespasses a crime scene.

After the call, Hyun states the reason for his refusal, “Because I’m a visitor.” He walks towards the bookshelves and looks for his father’s notebook. It’s gone missing, but instead, he finds Lee Joon-young’s recordings.

Back to the past. Little Hyun cleans the house wearing the same apron and bandana. He notices Dad’s briefcase at home and calls him. Dad is at the prison talking to a police officer friend, who notices his downcast mood. She shares that she’s divorcing soon, since she’s been unable to balance work and home life. Dad doesn’t share his personal concerns and merely asks her to prepare Lee Joon-young to be transferred to the central office before his hearing.

At the central office, Hyun entertains the police officers with his genius math abilities, but he’s more concerned with finding his father. Dad takes a break from his interrogation with the prisoner, Lee Joon-young, during which Hyun finds his way outside the room. Joon-young smiles when he finds out Hyun is Dad’s son, and he invites him inside.

Hyun recognizes Joon-young from Dad’s photos, and rather than being scared, he’s curious. How did he become this kind of person? With a crooked smile, Joon-young asks what kind of person he is, and Hyun simply states that he’s a person different from everyone else.

Joon-young explains that ducks think the first thing they see is their mother. All animals have their critical periods during which their brain undergo significant development. Things learned, heard, seen, and felt during this period are not easily changed. For ducks, it’s a matter of hours, 1-2 years for monkeys, and about 10-12 years for humans. “That’s the critical period for humans, and I also call that the period in which your soul forms.”

Hyun asks what his critical period was like, but Joon-young turns the attention to Hyun. How is his critical period like? He seems different that most people as well. Isn’t it difficult? Do people understand you? Does your father trust you?

Dad’s police officer friend approaches him on his break and tells him that Hyun impressed all the officers, who are still counting to confirm Hyun’s genius. Dad hasn’t seen Hyun yet, so he anxiously runs around looking for him.

In the interrogation room, Joon-young unlocks his handcuffs and offers his hand to Hyun. He suggests that they each share a secret, and Hyun takes his hand. Dad walks down to the room and sees the two engaging in their secret exchange. He’s chilled by this interaction and quickly takes Hyun out of the room. But before he exits, Joon-young tells Hyun that they’ll see each other again, as promised. How unsettling.

Dad asks his friend to take care of Hyun, so she leads him outside. Having finished counting, the other officers confirm Hyun’s genius abilities, but Hyun doesn’t seem too fazed by their praise.

In the room, Dad packs up his things, saying that this was his last interrogation with Joon-young. As he leaves, Joon-young taunts Dad about his worries about Hyun, and the worrisome similarities between the two. Joon-young agrees that he and Hyun are quite similar, which puts Dad on edge.

Dad grabs his collar, but Joon-young continues: “Your thoughts, your suspicions about your son are true.” He voices Dad’s worries about his son becoming a monster like him, and that’s enough for Dad to hit him. He punches Joon-young multiple times, and Joon-young laughs.

In his notebook, Dad writes that he’s been observing Joon-youg, but Joon-young was also observing him. “He discovered my fears and planted suspicion.” Dad searches his sons’ room and finds the sketchbook with the ghastly drawings. He asks Min if his hyung drew them, and Min confirms but asks that he doesn’t tell Hyun that he told him. Min isn’t scared of Hyun, but he warns Dad not to trust Hyun.

Unlike other children his age, Hyun sits on top of the jungle gym and observes. Dad notices this difference, and he visits the doctor in fear that his son is showing signs of a psychopath, which include wetting your bed, arson, and cruelty to animals. He eventually convinces himself that Hyun is not ordinary and writes in his notebook that he’s afraid that his son is a monster.

Hyun discovers this notebook entry the next morning and reshelves the notebook, looking hurt. At night, Dad sits by Hyun and thinks back to Joon-young, who promised to escape and visit Hyun. Gripping his son’s hand, Dad vows to protect Hyun.

The next morning, Dad summons Hyun into the basement and tells him that he’ll spend his days here now. Other people think that Hyun is abroad and not at home. Dad admits that this was the only immediate solution he could think of. “This is to protect you from the world and to protect the world from y–” Dad stops himself and chokes up before continuing.

From now on, they’ll study together how the world is like and how ordinary people live. Hyun looks at his father with hurt in his eyes, and Joon-young’s words echo in his mind: “Does your father trust you?”

He thinks back to his interaction with Joon-young, who shared his understanding of the world. He believes that some people become beautiful because there are called that since birth; some people become stupid because they are told so. Same with monsters — some people are born monsters and others become monsters because they are told so. How does Dad look at you?

Hyun looks at his father with a mixture of fear and hurt, and Dad looks back at him with a similar fear and earnest worry.

COMMENTS

What an interesting premise. With that ending, I understand why Hello Monster would have also been a fitting title, though I Remember You definitely takes the burden off of the central question: Are monsters born or made? I find that this ending, while not quite a cliffhanger, asks a complex and compelling question that makes me want to watch more. If it was a cliffhanger, I would only be worried about the next episode to relieve my anxiety, but I’m curious and hopeful to see how the drama as a whole answers this question. I’m impressed at how intricate this backstory is, and I actually appreciate the dense backstory for the introduction as opposed to having Hyun’s story be diluted throughout the episodes. It sets a good foundation for future episodes, though I worry that the story may run out of steam/content with this dense introduction. Hopefully, it just continues to build.

Going back to the title change, I do think the current title allows more room for the drama to direct the focus on the romance. I can clearly see Hyun being the emotional center and lead of this story, but I’m expecting Jang Nara and the other supporting characters to have a story as well, not just serve as plot devices. We got some teasers of the banter between our leads, and I think it’s safe to anticipate some good chemistry. I like the cat-and-mouse interaction between the two and while Ji-an is clearly the one chasing Hyun, you’re not quite sure sometimes. It’s a fun push and pull, and I’m curious to see how their relationship is integrated into the story.

The investigative team also has a great rapport, and the addition of Lee Chun-hee as their team leader completes their unit. While Chun-hee is great in most of his roles, I feel like he shines the most when he takes on heodang characters. He will always be heodang Chunderella to me, so his reprisal as such a character gives me life. To make a comparison to previous cop dramas, this team is not as explicit as You’re All Surrounded, which makes sense since the team isn’t the main focus of the story, but I enjoy the subtle humor in the team dynamic. This investigative team will definitely be the comic relief in our story, but once again, I hope the focus on our character won’t be so disproportionate that we exclude the stories of our supporting characters and merely use them in the plot.

The contrast between the past and present allows for an interesting exploration of the origin of monsters. Joon-young’s explanation about critical period and monsters still echoes in my mind, prompting an interesting discussion about who is or becomes a criminal. Clearly (or maybe just on the surface), the Hyun now is not a criminal. While he may have the intelligence and genius, if skewed, to transform into a psychopath, that is not who he appears to be in the present. With that assumption in mind, it seems that Dad jumped to conclusions, resulting in a tragically misunderstood son. But there seems to be no hatred for his misunderstanding coming from Hyun, even in the present. It adds a melancholy tone to the story, that being severely misunderstood resulted in hopelessness, not resentment. I think it’s these layered emotions that has me sold, and I hope that the show continues to capitalize in its potential.

Yay, I'm so happy this is being recapped - thank you!! I've watched both episodes now (don't worry, no spoilers) and I'm actually really happy with this so far. As mentioned in the commentary, I do get nervous about whether or not they will be able to keep this up for the whole series but so far so good.

And I really like the ideas they're playing with about not just what may or may not make a criminal but what makes a person. I completely agree with our psycho D.O. that people who are told they're stupid become stupid and people who are told they're pretty become pretty. I've seen it. Now, I don't think it's the only thing that makes a person and I think people can fight against it....but it has a lot of impact. People often become what is expected of them - good or bad. So I look forward to this show playing with that.

I also really like the tone so far. It really is a good fusion series so far. And I'm biased because I love the two leads in general and I think they both bring just the right amount of quirkiness to their roles. I also enjoy a good mystery and hope that they will solve a few different crimes and not just one main one.

OMG I WAITED THIS RECAP SINCE IT'S OUT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH DRAMALLAMA

@4D Yes, I agree with you, maybe I'm biased too toward D.O. and SIG. But really love to this show already because all the elements from plot, casts, script, effect <3<3<3

I just watched episode 1 with english sub though. And I thought I'll drop it after first episode because romance, mystery, thriller one. No comedy is not my cup of tea. I almost think to just watch Do Kyungsoo cut because I'm his fan. But GOD this is my second Healer this year! I'll follow it, I'll do live streaming, I'll over analysis it! Too much mystery I love it! Harhar

Leehyun vs investigate team is too funny! Investigate team vs their team leader is the funniest. Wonder what happen in the team when Hyun join this team.

So here we have Hyun in New York for? Just study or? Ji An following him since child, teens, and early adult so maybe he's just there for study. Then he went back because an email frim Junyeong? And there's an ahjumma, his father friend... So Hyun remember or not... Maybe not, because of trauma? It's weird if he just start to find the truth now, knowing how genius he is...

So what's Hyun father job? Psychiatry like Dr Jo from IOIL plus professor (but no, he's going to psychiatry too for his son) or just a lawyer plus professor or another silly investigator? Why he doesn't seem smart, he even easily got provocation and abused the prisoner just because angry...

This broken family ruin all the element inside it. So Min is the one who killed dogs around that area? Too young to become murderer! OMG WHY ;____; And Hyun is the genius, and their father is the one bring the mess /sigh

So Jang Nara is the girl next door. Maybe Hyun just pretended to not knowing her because he knew she fell for him since forever /smirk

So yeah, villain fan is here again :D if in Healer I am into Secretary Oh, here I'm into Do Kyungsoo (aside of bias but Joonyeong character is too eerie!!!) HIS VOICE HIS VOICE REALLY LOVE HIS VOICE /smirk/ evil inside every normal people and the one who have angel face is dangerous one. OFC THIS HANDSOME VILLAIN IS THE BEST ONE!

Junyeong is the master mind, he's cleverly make the dad believe his son is monster and the son believe himself as a monster. EVIL YOU JUNYEONG, YOUR SMIRK AND DEEP VOICE ARE TOO ANGELIC /DIED OF HAPPINESS/

This is the first time I'm happy when the villain came out, lmao. Although 'Jakkanim Jakkanim' spell still into my brain when the first preview came out. Here villain character is too strong, he loves it when the dad punched him is full of evilness /ghoosebump/

Can't wait to watch ep 2 with sub and next week episode. They said no Do Kyungsoo, right? Sad truth but hope it still growing better the adult character of villain!

Please continue to recap the second episode Dramabeans, thank you ^3^

“All children’s stories begin with their parents”
(mmm… all Korean dramas begins with the OTP in their childhood, falling in love already, thru midst of their parents demised. … so let’s go back to pre-ep 1)
“it’s that fellow… I have waited crazily for so long, and finally, Lee Hyeon this man, is in front of me.” (‘finding LJY’ was an excuse, deep inside her, like what she said in ep 16 “I think I would have like you from the first moment” , she has already liked him from the first moment, when she met him. ) Hyeon would have also liked her, “So you were her…. It’s still fun to tease you back then and now.”(as revealed in ep 6). Its take more than the needs to “find the killer who killed my father”, to stalk Hyeon all these good 20 years… the looks on a teen-Ji-An’s face, was likened unto stalking a EXO members thru shopping malls or café….
@ep 16 that little imagination, of what it should be like if none of them had met LJY, that all of them should be still meet each other and gotten along well living beside each other, was a ‘changer’ to how we looked at ep 1, the mind-set of Ji-An, as she stalked him 20 good years. Just like when she told “Aunt”, since Hyeon told her to stop seeing him, she would have ‘no excuse’ to see him any more… and she went banging her head on the table…. he even say he killed his father, …. “From my standpoint I had no choice but to suspect him, right? I sympathised with him thinking we had similar cirumstances, so even though he told me to get lost numerous times… I told myself to embrace him. Let’s be partner.
(i am rewatching the whole thing, and i guess, IRY deserve that much from many of us, who still remembers Hyeon and his Ji-An... )
right here as we watched again... its not hard to see that right at the beginning of plotting whole story, even thru those interviews and realities show, the OST teasers, ... we are introduced to Hyeon and Ji-An most of the times, the character of Min was not so much stressed, in fact, Kang was emphazised a lot,... but Min was a given, which they later found in in mid show, and more story-line channeled towards Min, and more scene times written for Min... like any more korean dramas... we are pleased to see, young Ji-An's mesmerized by Heon since childhood....
and unlike any other korean dramas... this ONE does not twisted and plot around couples bickering and some evil third parties trying to break off the OTP, we seriously do not need a ex girlfriend or fiances to cause spice and dramas...
the theme around "monsters natures or nurtures", "evil within all of us", "what is more important, justice or grace"?
and i loved what dramallama brings out, "hello monsters" is apt to represent the whole theme of the drama infact.

+1 on your comments!

I love that they put the philosophical question out there... is our personality and identity intrinsic or are we made because of the environment.

The child actors really stole the show here...
--the mini Hyeon's realisation of his father's doubts and fear of himself
--the prisoner teenage and his incredibly unsettling gaze

I am liking this drama. The start was good and now I'm waiting for the next weeks episodes. :) Even though it is not so mysterious but still I'm curious to know more.
And yes I agree with you that supporting teammates needs their equal story time.
Seo In-Guk looks manly in this drama.
The child actor who portrayed Hyun's younger self, ahh those earnest eyes. That fear. I can feel it.

Thanks dramallama for the recap.
Somehow I agree and disagree. I watch 1st ep and hooked. I really like the pace, interaction, comedic scene and mystery that this drama offer on 1st ep. What I think about this drama:
A. The story itself give more than potential to develop. And it give us questions to be answer and build our curiosity. Who's the one the bad? How did our leads met and what did happened actually between them? I really can't wait week for answer.
B. Ah... Seo In Guk is really suit for this role. He got the charm of being cool even he's not trying. Lee Hyun is interesting character. He can show how arrogant can genius people are... ^o^
C. Jang nara once again proof herself as romantic comedy queen. But this time I see her layer to be mysterious woman. I want to know her story in past, how she know LJH, what a connection she had with LH in the past. Its interesting...
D. I put Do Kyungsoo in my radar even before drama. And Yes, he proof it. He is not idol actor again but step up as actor. His acting is flawless... and I worried that he stool the spotlight that the leads has to had in 1st ep. Even I think he did... hopefully he has more scene in this drama
E. The police team is fundamental for detective drama, and I found I fall in love with this team. They are not like super team but realistic team... and even they didn't show their bright talent as detective, I have tendency to care for them, I don't know why. and I want to know how their interaction as team in the future.

Lastly, I found this drama has lot charms to make me standby waiting for it every week. This drama already save me from hiatus in drama land... that's why I Remember You will be my top drama spot right now.

You put it all, I concur! I hope, hope, hope that the writer is as smart as she/he portrays herself/himself to be. I really liked the smelly girl drama because of the OTP interactions, but the main story itself shows that the writer wasn't even sure on what the background of the killer was. She asked questions, but gave no answers. I really hope this one doesn't turn out like that, cause the 2 episodes hook me in!

I thought the first episode was... boring. I mean, I started out watching the first 10 mins or so and it seemed average. But I decided to give it a chance and the 2nd episode was so so so much better. More JNR + SIG moments and the backstory got richer. I just hope that the plagiarism issues can be resolved soon.

The best thing for me in the first 2 eps is D.O.'s performance. Wow! What a pleasant surprise!
I mean we all expect good things from SIG and JNara, but D.O. is new to acting, and he hits it out of the park. There were glimpses of his talent in It's Okay, it's love, when he played the male lead's imaginary younger self, but we could chalk it up to that char being adorable. No such possibility here. It's D.O.'s good acting pure and simple. Now we've another idol who can act.

Oh I am. Ever since IOIL, I've had my eyes on him. He was also good in Cart, his first movie and acting gig (shot before IOIL). He's shooting a movie with Kim Sohyun right now which will be out first quarter of next year. It's called Pure Love. I reckon his character will be in love with Sohyun's. Surprisingly, I'm worried if he can pull off the romantic role well because we've seen him in more challenging roles. It's an opposite of the usual where I get worried when an actor will go from romcom to heavier roles.

0

@dian

Not only you , I am worried too about his romantic role. Well I am an Exo fan, I watched Exo next Door for fun, where he has that ordinary good character and Chanyeol was the lead. It was a idol web drama, obviously fluffy. But, I was not convinced with D.O's acting there :(

I have to agree with you too. DO's acting is quite good in an eerie sort of you. The acting he does with his eyes is amazing and i love the tone of his voice when he speaks.

Huge potential for this drama. They've laid the groundwork pretty well, with the second episode being better than the first. Hopefully they don't lose steam or fall into a pointless cycle to keep it running. Very high hopes for this one.

Also, Jang Nara's a natural in every role she plays it seems.

Interesting so far.

The start was a little bit shaky. It wasn't bad but the present isn't as compelling as the past. The reason for this is because they're setting down the backstory but there's a disparity in presentation.

I think there's something to be said about the drama if most of the news the it generated in the past 2 days were about D.O's acting. Some even going as far as saying he 'hand-carried' the episodes. As a viewer, I quite agree. Lee Joonyoung left such a big impression that I wanted to know more about him rather than our main. But that can be a good point in the long run. We barely know anything about Lee Hyun even though we know about his childhood. So much possibilities!

I'm going to keep on watching to find out the full story.

I re-watched episodes 1 & 2 because I want to digest the backstory further and I've never done that with dramas I live-watch. Not even with Nine.

I'm left with so many questions. Who is Lee Hyun? Where is his brother? What happened after his father died? For Jian, who is she? Why was she stalking Lee Hyun? What is her backstory? Our two mains are interesting individuals. I want to know how they are connected to each other and to Lee Joonyoung.

Sadly, I don't care for the romance part yet. SIG and JNR def has chemistry in the few scenes they shared but I don't know how they will introduce the romance into it.

They were in lil bro's sketchbook, but Dad just assumed Hyun drew them (he was already suspecting him to be a psychopath, for whatever reason) and so he asked Min and Min lied. Many people suspect Min to be the real psychopath, which is a prediction I agree with.

I really liked the first two eps with two exceptions.

1. The instrumental music's tone sometimes jars considerably with the action. A little too lilting and jaunty for the opening crime scene, for instance. Sometimes the melody sounds very similar to the theme from Sherlock.

2. Annnnnnd the fx showing how SIG's character thinks is far too reminiscent of Sherlock as well.

I love the chemistry between the leads. Unhinged DO is a sight to behold as well. I also loved seeing Jeon Gwang-ryul as a loving but misguided father rather than a rapist gangster.

DO totally, utterly KILLED it in the first 2 episodes. He really cemented himself as a versatile actor who can play more than damaged, puppy characters. But it makes me sad that female idol/actors will never get the chance to play demented, serial killers and dark twisted characters esp since male idols are usually regarded as good actors when they play scary characters (ie. TOP, Joon) but female idols always play the same 2D girl next door, pretty characters and never anyone with layers and darkness, so it's kinda sad. but DO really sold me on this drama. Esp in the next episode but In Guk is also an amazing character but I'm on the fence with Nara

Female idols have played meddling/evil second leads before (UEE in You're Beautiful, Sunhwa in Marriage Not Dating, just to name a few) but I agree - they pretty much never get borderline psychopathic, insane roles. Which would be pretty interesting, in my opinion.

I'm not into K Pop so I had no idea that he was an idol. His acting is really solid! I love him and Kang Haneul (Missing Noir M) as eerie villains! And somehow there's a certain vulnerability to their madness too.

It's a really good point you brought up, about female idols/actors never getting super strong roles. There were stronger female characters (For instance, JNR's character in Fated was one of the more mentally and emotionally balanced ones) now and then, but I don't quite recall interesting characters where the focus is on their intelligence or psyche, rather than how their relationships with other people.

Its the Lil spawn of Satan. I think he told G.O's character what his brother did and how he was covering for him and how his dad saw that but the prisoner decided to use it to his advantage and tease the dad. Here's my comment about Hello Monster/I Remember You drama ep 1:
1. Lemme give a big applause to D.O Kyungsoo. He nailed it. Such a diva-angelic-baby-psychopath!! Love it. Okay, it sounds weird, but seriously, I like to see him being creepy psychopath. His innocent eyes, his angelic smile, with creepy words come out from his mouth just so freaking cool afsgdhdkalajdhl :))

2. Who was sent an email and evidence pictures to Lee Hyun (Seo In Guk) using Police IP address? Hyun Ji Soo (Police ahjumma)?? Lee Min (Lee Hyun's little bro)??? Or Lee Joon Young (D.O)??? Or the doctor in forensic lab? He's suspicious tho. But let's wait next ep hehehe. And please, don't say Lee Hyun has DID (Identity Disorder).

3. I want to scream out loud when I saw little Lee Hyun entering the interrogation room. Oh my God why?!?. This dangerous psychopath beat the jail guard for just errr, opening the window, and they were like... Oh yeah, lemme give small handcuff for him again. Aaaand still didn't give double security in front of his interrogation room, so that 10yo kid can talk with him like a bruuhhh. Lol.

4. Another one.... Those Cha Ji An (Jang Nara) team can come and go to crime scene like a boss, never ever wearing gloves or plastic outfit. FBI, teach them juseyooo hahaha :)))

6. Who was trespassing Lee Hyun's dad house? His little bro (is he still alive?!) or LJY or Police ahjumma?!? Or it's just some burglar with high IQ since they just left the key in front of the door. Lol.

7. I just hate LH's dad. How could he did that to LH? He failed as daddy and also professor of psychology or something. He failed to observe his own sons, and let LJY plants doubt at him.

Overall, I love this drama. The chemistry so good, the plot so great. Ohh I just love this genre hehehe :)

The bit about Hyeon entering an unguarded cell was a tad unrealistic. Even as a plot device, who would be stupid enough to leave a serial killer unguarded with the door open?! And they let a kid wander through a police station alone?!!!!

All those cops should be fired on the spot. This drama gives minimum security prison a bad name.

I thought I wouldn't like this. I'm not a fan of both the leads and the genre, but the the first two episodes are surprisingly interesting. I love the mystery and the goosebumps it gave, how the show portrays complicated characters. D.O. and child Hyun actor were superb as well: they had all the facial expressions needed for their roles. Plus, the idea about dualism is just something: I think the painting itself looks creepy.

And, it took me two episodes to recognize someone I knew somewhere: It's been ages since I watched Chunderella from Family Outing! I hope he gets at least a funny love line here (is that even possible? There's nothing much to be expected from the character but the boasts). I still don't have much expectation on the love line of both leads too, but I think I'll keep anticipating the coming episodes.

So much potential here! but then they do butt-stupid things like: leave the interrogation room door OPEN so a child can wander in? dad sees dangerous criminal talking to his kid WITH HIS HANDCUFFS OFF and doesn't say or do anything? handcuffs mysteriously reattach themselves? Plus dad treats 10-year-old like his house-maid/slave AND wonders why he's not normal? doesn't know which of his kids is always drawing strange stuff? This is a k-drama after all and no matter the odds, everyone/everything is always contacted to each other in the long run. I am taking his not knowing her but finds her familiar is that she been following him around since childhood it seems.
There is a lot going on, Joon-Young seems to have sycophants helping him, ie the ambulance and his escape, the younger brother..the real monster? where is he now, the police coverup, Ji An stalking and her having police files on the Joon-Young case and so on

Thanks for this. It certainly can explain her strange interest in him, and maybe also why she merely stalked him without making contact. Her attitude still seems one of interest, rather than one of a desperate need to get information out of him. So we'll have to wait and see.

And yes, in kdrama-land, everyone is coincidentally related to the main leads in some way or other, so there will be a reason that will unfold. :)

I was toying around with that idea too, but I can't really get behind it because... she doesn't seem to have a lot of pent-up angst towards Hyun. She does seem irritated by him, but lacks the steely determination that revenge/justice-to-my-dead-family types tend to have... And aunt's reaction wasn't like "oh that's unhealthy for you" but more of "oh you're not done with that obsession yet?" attitude.

Thanks dramallama! I hope this means DB will be recapping this for the long haul.

I was happy to try this show and find another intriguing drama to watch (so many shows, so little time).

I am aghast at the father. He does not hire any adult help but expects a young child to keep house and care for his younger brother all by himself!!! As a father, without domestic help, surely he should have had lots of time to know what his children are like, but he only has suspicions and lets them grow without finding out for sure. He does not know his children and he does not seem to care to know them. Unlike other parents who will deny their child's wrongdoing even in the face of proof, this father does the opposite!!!

He did not get his police friends to find out how the animals got hurt, but simply lets suspicions turn to fear at a drop of a hat. He does not bring his boys for professional evaluation to find out if they have special needs. Without proper investigation, he decides the world needs protection from a child!!! If anyone is creating a person with a problem personality, it's this father. What is raising a child if it is not to help him know how to value life and what's important, how to love and serve and find fulfillment in give and take.

I cannot countenance a parent who fobs off parental responsibility, acts out of fear and fixates on hiding and control rather than on actively seeking help. He let fear conquer love and common sense!

Many people seem to forget Hyun was and is a PROFILER. He doesn't need to investigate like the ordinary people because he was NOT ordinary.... Like he knew, and like the serial killer knew too.

The boy could look at a person and know the kind of person they were...exactly how he told the killer in the guard room that he was not an ordinary guy.

Not everyone born a genius can know how many match sticks there are without counting. You seem to have forgotten too that part at the airport when the grown up Hyun came back and the coordinates were dancing around him...he sees things differently from the ordinary person. Get it now?

Hyun has the potential to be a deadly serial killer like D.O's character, but environment matters a lot in a child's life. DO's character was seen as and called a monster when he was little, so he developed hatred for people. But Hyun was raised in a different environment.

I Still wonder why he doesn't seem to mind that other people may die, so long as he keeps seeing signatures to solve. Is that part the 'deadly' side of him. He has the capability to be a monster, but I don't want him to turn out so/believe he is one.

@Cy

Was Lee Hyun's dad a profiler too (we were referring to the father not to Lee Hyun)? He seemed more like the prison psychologist rather than a profiler.

It's good that Lee Hyun, despite being labelled a monster and with the capacity to get away with murder, chose to become a criminal profiler instead. His care for his family makes it unlikely that he's a psychopath, so we can look forward to some warming up moments with him. :)

Honestly, I don't think that Lee Hyun had the capability of becoming a psychopath in the first place! While the dad did notice some signs that his son had conduct disorder (the childhood manifestation of anti social personality disorder), it could not truly be proven. It was just as likely that Lee Hyun had been telling the truth and that the animal he was burying was indeed dead or that his brother Min was actually the one with CD and doing such horrible deeds. His curiosity and intelligence alone should not brand him as a potential serial killer. Regardless of the circumstances, I honestly think that his father failed as a professor (of what, I don't know) and as a researcher in every possible way. He let his bias get in the way and was affected by the subject. He also failed to properly diagnose his son before banishing him to the dungeons (well, not literally but close) with limited social contact. Now that, had it been allowed to go on, would have created far more emotional problems for Lee Hyun than anything else. It would have presented itself as a trigger for future episodes.

Interestingly enough, I dont think it's physically possible to know the number of matchsticks there are quite that quickly. That's pretty much a drama exaggeration. Estimation, otherwise, is possible and you don't need to be a genius to do it. My proudest moment was correctly estimating the number of jelly beans in a jar during a contest in my middle school, twice. And I was a B/C math student my entire life. I should note that my favorite book to read in flight is a book entitled "Becoming evil: how ordinary people commit mass genocide". Yeah. People tend to avoid me the plague while I'm on the plane.

Thanks @Val. Your comment is very interesting.

I agree that it is fortunate Lee Hyun did not end up in the basement for too great a length of time. He has hopefully grown up to be quite 'normal' although maybe a little arrogant as he's so over-intelligent.

Yes it is just a dramatic point to have him know the number of matchsticks just by glancing at them. But it's cute that you managed to guess the number of jelly beans accurately more than once!!

And you choice of book is effective in keeping boring in-flight chit chat at bay! LOL!

On point observations.

The father also failed to answer his son's questions: "why do people hurt others, and why can't they?".

That was a VERY IMPORTANT question- it could make a serial killer OR it could discourage one.

How are we sure it's not Hyun's younger brother who asked it first/who made Hyun ask it.

Also it's a legitimate question at this age considering the job daddy does and knowing hyun organizes his work papers even without knowing that little bro min or he himself have strange behavioural patterns and maybe less emotions than normal

Good points too @Cy and Wildfly

The question is a very legitimate one and I get questions very similiar to it from 9-12 year olds. They just need to know. They need the answers as a guide for them as they continue to discern and unravel right from wrong, a higher good from a lesser good, etc. The fact that the father did not tackle that question openly makes it appear that it was wrong to ask the question or as if the questioner has something wrong about him, which is not the case.

So many kdramas (and possible other types of dramas) have such bad parents as plot points. Ironically, the killer Joon Young did Lee Hyun a favor by killing his dad and setting him free. He must have had a much more normal upbringing as an adoptee (than he would have had with his own father) which enables him to be a 'normal' adult now. :)

Well ...mmm.... I watched the 1st episode and I may be very dumb to not understand many things. I means how the little boy could go a criminal's room so easily??? only one guard was enough then but when Joon young was in car he fought three men and escaped??? I cant think Hyun's father was very normal too, he was obsessed with Joon young.

I had doubts that SIG would be able to play the character or not. I find him trying too much, even his hair stylist. That was really a cartoonish way to show him as a serious guy. I hope they wouldn't continue with this hair style.

Jang Na Ra was a pleasant surprise :) she can really play a tough woman. I like her in this role.
Why are kdramas obsessed with childhood connections of the leads??? why the leads have to meet each other in childhood??? I am now sick of it :( ... well I have too many questions to be answered so I am sticking to it and romance thriller actually is my favorite genre.

It was hard to catch, but the ambulance Joon-Young was taken into was a set up. The parametric made the guards ride along. And when they were driving the real ambulance was on it's way.

So Joon-Young and the parametric and driver dealt with them.

So somehow, he has helpers.

SIG + JNR + LCH...the wait is now over. Thanks a bunch dramallama for signing up to recap I Remember You (aka Hello Monster).

In agreement about D.O. as Lee Joon-Young...very good job indeed. Childhood Lee Hyun, especially his backstory and family dynamics are the elements from episodes 1 & 2 that I found were the most intriguing.

So far I've watched all 5 episodes of High Society and the premier episodes of I Remember You. As of right now if I had to pick my preference between the two dramas for which one I am more excited about watching - I Remember You would be the winner.

Just for a moment allow me to be shallow...
Thank goodness Jang Na-Ra wasn't forced to cut her shoulder length locks into the undesirable and infamous bowl haircut with weird bangs. How come as I'm typing this an image of Kim Sun Ah's hairstyle in Masked Prosecutor just popped in my head?

The image of an attractive man/guy in a suit can be irresistible, sexy, and smoking hot. :)
The blue ankle pant suit Seo In-Guk is wearing in episodes 1 & 2 :(
To the stylist/wardrobe person I ask WHY did you do that to him?

WRT Hair... I found that when Kim Sun Ah's hairstyle changed a bit in the last episode or so, and when it had a few curl-outs rather than rounded in bob, she looked quite nice. It was nicer that the total bowl-shaped style anyway.

I've had a few dramas recently (School 2015, Mask, High Society) where the first episode was kind of ok, then I suddenly fell in love from the second episode, got addicted fast but further into the drama the weaknesses become very apparent and I'm slowly falling out of love again :(

having watched the second episode of this I find myself in the honeymoon phase again, I love this drama already! I love how there is a darkness and some pretty existential questions lurking behind the bantering, the cuteness and the sherlock-holmes-ing...and for once the childhood scenes are just as, or maybe even more compelling than the adult scenes
I just hope I won't get disappointed again...

This kinda reminded me of You’re All Surrounded but this is definitely better. I just hope the writer has plan/outline on how the story goes from episode to episode. I would hate to the story crumble and become a mess or just another okay drama.

C'mon drama, don't fail. I already dropped three dramas this year :(

OH MY!! NOW, I'm curious what secret Hyun told the serial killer after he told him his. Was it about who really killed the animal?

The killer does NOT really know the kind of person Hyun was, that's why he said, "I'm curious what kind of adult you'll grow up to be". He just pretended to, probably because he wanted to make the father think the boy would turn out like him.

I'm wary of that mortuary attendant(or what is he?) that jang nara asked if he noticed any signatures.

Brilliant first and second episodes. D.O is a very good actor. That child that played young genius Hyun will make a brilliant actor when he grows up. He's still little but completely immersed himself in the role. That's talent.

What really gets me is that the father, a so-called psychologist (or whatever) himself knows that Joon Young was observing him and possibly trying to warp his thinking, and yet he lets precisely that happen, believing the doubts implanted by a killer whom he knows tells lies, rather than his own son. I just can't stand it.

But I know, the ridiculously bad father trope was to get the story going. Just can't stop venting when I think about it :)

Yeah, I think it's the brother that's the serial killer while Hyun has some sort of autism, perhaps Asperger's: he's observant, good with memorizing and math, he doesn't seem to have friends and not very affectionate. You hardly see him touch anyone or smile. His questions about why is it wrong to hurt others can be construed as a lack of empathy which is also an Asperger's trait. His dismissive behavior and reluctance to talk or connect to other people, his brisk, blunt and careless attitude also are Asperger traits. His knack for symbols and codes and numbers is also a clue.

He's different. But not psychotic. So far.

As nerdy as it makes me sound, reading this comment kept me up as I was considering the possibilities of LH having Asperger's, or at least high functioning ASD. Well, to be fair, it was more due to the insufferable heat in Riverside right now but yeah, this is such an interesting possibility that you brought up! Unfortunately, I don't think that he has Asperger's. One of the key characteristics of ASD (and Asperger's) is the lack of empathy, which is often qualified using Theory of Mind. Had LH lacked theory of mind, he would not be able to become a criminal profiler, which requires you to literally put yourself in the shoes of the criminal. I did notice that he notices things in the environment (something that people with ASD tend to do) but don't remember if he mentioned anything about the criminal's motives. As for the other traits that you brought up, I think that they're individual traits seen in some with ASD but for the most part, aren't seen across a wide spectrum, outside of the lack of friends trait. But if he indeed has ASD, it brings up another good point: is that lack of empathy the same lack of empathy in psychopaths; what separates the two?

Shit, I feel terrible that I've forgotten most of my abnormal psyc and cognitive psyc learnings... and I majored in it. -_-

But damn cool discussion! Thanks for tackling this!

Hmm could it be that his version of profiling is based on some kind of utility-based logical thinking, like going for maximum payoff without taking into account things like morals? Perhaps that makes him 'relate' more easily to the 'straightforward' thinking of psychopaths. E.g. he can relate to how a psychopath might ask "why is it wrong to murder" because that's a valid philosophical question, instead of being burdered by thoughts like "omg how can I ask such an awful question"? So he might be able to be very calculative/cold-hearted in guessing how a psychopath criminal might behave?

Aww, don't worry ;) I just finished a developmental abnormal psyc course at school (my one psyc course) and spent my entire quarter taking classes focused mostly or solely on Autism. I'm also interviewing for research in autism at the moment so it's really only the reason why autism is fresh on my mind.

The possibility that you brought up is something that I considered as well. I just can't put that into words as well as you have :( I haven't had the time to go back to re-evaluate the episode but I think that it is likely that he's relying on procedural information rather than putting himself in the killer's shoes. In terms of the straightfoward thinking of psychopaths, I'd argue that psychopaths don't have straightforward thinking but rather ritualized stereotypies that they must follow (ie. purple flower) and Lee Hyun is merely picking up on. He's not relating to their straightforwardness but rather evaluating the crime scene.

Hmm you're right about his focus on the procedures too. I forgot that about the fixations on rituals. Good catch!

I'd love a drama that's strongly based on proper research. That would make me really excited because things I've read and learned would make sense. But with the whole fiasco at the police station... I guess that's too much to hope for.

Hey, good discussion. I might have to add that I haven't studied any psychology and etc, it was just a thought so thanks for clearing that up. My education of any of such things is internet research and writing crime thrillers. LOL.

That said, so far, I haven't seen Hyun do any profiling though, he's more Sherlockian that way rather than say...Criminal Minds. He sees the crime and the surroundings more than the motivation behind than the action. I'm hoping we get more of when he delves behind the purpose of the murder, like when he pointed out the different method of murder between the 1st and 2nd murder, I like that he pointed out that it was pushed by rage...because of a hair cut.

That got me since serial killers are pretty ritualized in their killing methods.

So far, I am loving this show.

Anyway, I guess a person can be highly logical and less emotional or sentimental without having Asperger's or ASD, I mean I've been told that my decisions are pretty clear cut and cold although I can empathize with people and animals (mostly animals), and I do often question moral, ethics and social values that have people look at me like I'm crazy. I do often get dismissive of other people and can cut them out of my life once I decided to without regret.

Being as smart as Hyun I can understand why he'd be an ass, people bore him, stupid people (which for him is probably everybody) exasperate and frustrates them. His disbelieving looks when someone says something stupid reminds me of Sherlock's "What is it like in your tiny little brains" speeches.

For instance, I didn't think that Hyun's question was frightful at all, I thought that was a pretty good question and that it was just kids asking questions like they do. I think Hyun's dad overreacted because of his job and spooked by D.O's character and him seeing shadows and connected the dots leading him to the wrong conclusion.

People like this though can achieve so many things and live normal lives as long as they have that anchor. For Dexter it was his father and his sister, for Sherlock it's Watson. It only takes one person, for Hyun it was probably his dad's friend though I'm thinking though affectionate, it's not a particularly life-changing bond there.

Suffice to say Dad just went at the problem the worst way possible, locking him up and all.

I'm rambling.

I love the chemistry between SIG and JNR, and it's interesting to see JNR in such a feisty/impatient character this time, since the first and only other show of hers I've seen was Fated.

Lee Hyun's backstory is really intriguing. I'm trying to figure it out (I can't help it, I need to know the plot) but I really don't get how they're all related. I guess time will tell! But I kinda wish they stuck to the Hello Monster name. Since we kinda get it in episode 1 already.

I really wanna know Hyun and Ji-An knew each other. She calls him a jerk, but she seems to also be sorta attracted to him. Like the way she reacts when she ended up hugging up after being caught unaware with the 'car chase', or how her younger self stalked him.

But I'm also frustrated by how ridiculously weak Hyun's father was. Or how ridiculously unguarded the whole police station was. No guards outside the interrogation room, such that a mere child can walk in through a wide agape door? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? And for a profiler, dad was so... nervous. He seemed more like a writer researching for a book than someone who knows criminal psyche. Wait, he's a profiler, right? Because there's no way he would have risen to police chief on brains alone - his demeanour is too pushover, without any commanding presence. EXPLAIN PLEASE, SOMEBODY. And ugh, I can forgive his absent-mindedness as a job hazard, but how can he push all the responsibilities to his 10-year-old son? Like he's so comfortable being taken care of that he doesn't want to make enough effort to give his kid a carefree childhood. Based on the conversation, it didn't sound like a case of dad letting Hyun be the little adult out of a I-respect-and-embrace-your-personality. It seemed more like you-should-be-like-other-kids-but-wait-if-that-means-more-hassle-for-me-just-stay-this-way. Am I too cynical? Nah, a real dad wouldn't write diaries with hurting comments and leave them around OPENLY for his housekeeping son to find horrible news. Absent-mindedness is not an excuse.

I initially found younger Hyun quite unnerving with his quiet voice and unchild-like behaviour, but I slowly understood that as the plot progressed. (At episode 2 now, and I think the kid is damn good. So amazed by the sheer number of supremely talented kid actors in Korea!) I don't think Hyun is an animal abuser. I think it's a lot more complicated. And I think little Hyun made up his mind to NOT be like LJY. And speaking of growing up, I wanna know wow Hyun went from being a hyper mature and reserved kid to this impish and suave adult. I mean, little Hyun was confident about his own abilities, but in a very matter-of-fact way, whereas current day Hyun is cocky and pretty smooth around women! Don't get me wrong, I love SIK's acting, but I think this huge change in personality should be explained. A simple amnesia doesn't quite do it.

Min is also kinda intriguing. He seems perfectly at ease with his brother, but that...

Yes! I'm so agree with you on this! I always love SIG's acting in every drama he's in, yes I watched all of his dramas, but here, I feel quite unsettling on his characterization of Lee Hyun. I'm not sure if it's SIG's acting, or the writing, or the directing.

Lee Hyun looks more like an arrogant chaebol than a criminology professor. He looks too fancy and he stays in that huge luxurious hotel. I thought a criminology professor wouldn't even care about staying in a 5 star hotel, or changes the hairstyle everyday hehe...

Well, I guess I just have to wait for the next eps.

Yes, totally. It's almost a 180-degree turn from kid Hyun. I'd think that for such a particular personality like that, it's harder to make such a significant about turn. It would make sense if he learned to be friendlier, gentler... but not this almost 'player'-like suave and arrogance. I suppose the fancy hotel might be because he's now well-to-do and like his OCD creature comforts, but the whole dressing up and flirting. Nah, I need more answers.

By the way I didn't notice that about the hair. Will scrutinise more closely in upcoming episodes!

@osmanthus tea, "player-like suave and arrogance", yes! omg how did you know what was I'm going to say? Lee Hyun is def shows off his player like suave, he knows how to be around woman and how to manipulate others. Well, I'm not complaining since I'm a SIG HUGE fan, but I was expecting something different from his Lee Hyun portrayal. Could it be that because Lee Hyun knows so well about criminal minds, he knows so well how to manipulate others?

I kind of get that same feeling as well.

Even though we don't see a lot of the younger brother in these episodes, I think it might turn out that it's him who is actually him who is the psychopath and his elder brother Hyeon is covering for him because well, that's what elder brothers do right? They protect their younger siblings.

In the scene when the younger brother tell his father, 'don't believe hyung' could maybe mean that he's asking his dad not to believe it if Hyeon tries to tell the truth about what really is going on.

But then again I could be completely wrong! lol
Maybe I'm trying to find the hidden mystery in this plot that may or may not be there, it's all up to whoever is writing the story.
Who knows where this story will go. It's so interesting and promising. I hope the writers and directors can keep this up.
