Dramabeans panels at KCON 2015: Talkin’ ’bout dramas, academia, fandoms, and lovefests
by javabeans
Hey all, we’ve got details to share with you about our upcoming appearance at KCON 2015! If you plan to go, we hope you’ll swing by and catch one of our two panels and say hey.
KCON takes place from July 31 through August 2 (Friday-Sunday) at Staples Center and the LA Convention Center in downtown Los Angeles. We’ve got one panel on Friday afternoon and one on Saturday, and we’re really excited about both of them.
Our first panel is titled Hallyu in Academia, which girlfriday and I will moderate. The next day we’ll be doing a panel titled Show, You Complete Me, which gummimochi and HeadsNo2 will moderate.
For Hallyu in Academia, we’re super thrilled to have three awesome professors as panelists, all of whom we’ve worked with before—girlfriday and I were honored to be asked to participate in their classes in the past, which were a blast each time (and made us incredibly jealous that Korean dramas, K-pop, and Hallyu fandom are being taught in college).
- I first made the acquaintance of Hae Joo Kim when she was writing her dissertation in Korea, and years later, she was a PhD of ethnomusicology and professor teaching a course titled “Korean Music from Gugak to K-pop” (how cool is that, right?) at Wesleyan University. She invited us to guest lecture a class, and we had a lively discussion and showed drama clips and just talked about dramas nonstop.
- Bonnie Tilland invited us to guest lecture a class she taught at the University of Washington two years ago titled “Korean Television Dramas in the World, the World in Korean Television Dramas,” and her syllabus had us drooling in envy to take the course. Weeks and weeks of drama watching and critical analysis, divided along genre lines! It was a blast, and we could tell her students loved the course.
- Regina Yung Lee currently teaches at the University of Washington as a professor of gender, women & sexuality studies, though we first met her through the class she taught at UC Riverside about online fandom cultures. We answered questions for her students about recapping, straddling cultures and the like, and then when she moved up to UW she invited us to chat with her class there, “Gender and Fandom in Online Contexts.” That was hilarious and fun, shooting the breeze with her students about the K-drama production environment, fan response, gender expectations and more.
The details!
Friday, July 31
4:00pm – 5:00pm
Panel Title: Hallyu in Academia
Participants: javabeans, girlfriday, Hae Joo Kim, Bonnie Tilland, Regina Yung Lee
Saturday, August 1
12:30pm – 2:00pm
Panel Title: Show, You Complete Me
Participants: javabeans, girlfriday, gummimochi, HeadsNo2
In the academia panel we’ll be talking with the professors about their experiences studying Korean dramas and music, what it’s like teaching them in a university setting, and so on. The Show, You Complete Me panel will be essentially a collective lovefest. Come love dramas with us!

omgggggg I am dying - DYING!!! - to hear both of these (and also take those courses, especially Bonnie Tilland's) but I'm in the wrong country, sob. Please please find a way to make these available to international audiences after the event. Like how Comic Con panels are put on youtube after. I can't be the only person who desperately wants this!
Have a blast, girls!

Oh my, I would LOVE to able to watch those panels online, especially the Acadamia one. Even a highlight reel would be awesome. And it's not just international fans who can't make it LA, though someday I will make it to KCON for things like this!

I wish I can go but my health is not that great at the moment. It would have been a nice day to spend my birthday. Just meeting other people who like kdramas would have been a great present. I hope you guys have fun!

is there a chance you could record this somehow and upload it (or parts of it) at some point? because it sounds interesting and I'd like to check it out, but I'm sort of in another hemisphere so attending is kind out of the question for me. just wondering.

Was going to go, but saw how expensive it was. Although I could go, I kind of opted to go to anime expo instead. I want to spend tons of money there. Have fun for anyone else going.

I tried to buy just the convention passes but couldn't. It seemed like I had to get one of the concert tickets. Were you able to buy one for $25?

I just hope that the entrance be faster than last year on friday so I cant miss anything.

I'm so sad you guys won't be at KCON NY also. These panels sound so awesome and I can't believe I won't be able to witness them! Hopefully you guys will be at KCON next year and I will finally be able to afford the trip to LA.

It'd be great to have a way to help Beanies find one another as they wander around KCON-- does anyone have any bright ideas? I'm thinking that it should be something simple to make and easy to spot. Like, maybe someone could design a badge that's half blue and half orange (the colors of dramabeans' logo) which could easily be printed out and affixed to a nametag sticker or something. Or people could just make their own half-blue, half-orange sticker-badges and cut them into the shape of a kidney bean. Whaddaya think?

how appropriate -- blue is Super Junior's fan club color, and orange is Shinhwa's changjo fan club color....

how about just a round tag or big button that is half blue and half orange? then everyone can make their own....
see you guys at the panel discussions!

The film/TV studies/sociology nerd in me would really love to attend the Friday session, but my schedule doesn't line up with either, sadly. Have a great pair of panels! I might still drop by the convention for what film, drama, and indie music panels and shows I can find on Saturday afternoon and Sunday tho.
