Characters in costume for Scholar Who Walks the Night

Well, we know the leads of Scholar Who Walks the Night are out of commission for a short while, but the drama has released its first official still (above), which joins the unofficial snapshots that have been uploaded to various social media accounts (below). The lone character still isn’t much, but I suppose better than nothing.

First we have Lee Jun-ki in the titular role of a scholar, Kim Sung-yeol, who holds a post in the Hongmungwan (which kept the royal library) and becomes a vampire through an undisclosed fateful event. I’d quip that he’s fully in character as the mysterious shadowy vampire, except that Lee Jun-ki has always kind of looked like a vampire, so really this is a case of spot-on casting rather than a good transformation.

Below his snapshots we have Lee Yubi decked out in her menswear, which enables her to pass off as a young man in order to sell books. I know, I keep getting Sungkyunkwan Scandal vibes from the setup too, but I’m just waiting for the drama to air and set itself apart. Which shouldn’t be too difficult given the whole paranormal/fantasy/genre bent, and the descriptions that include words like “sweet and chilling.” Chilling seems pretty appropriate given that it’s a summertime drama, and summertime is seen as the prime season for horror and ghostly stories—something about the chills running down your spine having a cooling effect in the heat. (I don’t know about you, but that just makes things hotter for me, since hiding under a mound of blankets is a lot more comfortable in the wintertime…)

Scholar Who Walks the Night began shooting in May and will premiere in July, following Warm and Cozy on MBC.

Omo, Lee Jun-ki looks out of this world....It's really as if he was born to shine in fusion sageuks, I swear...
I also love Lee Yubi, she is both cute and boyish. Man, should I really put that much expectation on that one? Don't fail us, Show!

He definitely looks like a vampire in a couple of those shots. But why do vampires have to wear lipstick?

I'm excited for this! I hope it lives up to my expectations.

I really hope their injuries won´t cause them a lot of pain. would be awful if they had to do the drama on painkillers.

fingers crossed that this turns out ok

kinda reminds me of the trouble with Terry Gilliams Man Of La Mancha but I wont jinx it

There are SO many better actors in Sageuks than LJK. He's good, but very far from the best.

Yes, but only senior actors like Song Il Gook or Choi Min Soo! Out of the current leading actors right now only LJK is the best in sageuks!

Better actors than LJK. C'mon, tell just one, and please don't give me Old guys names, it would be ridiculous. He is far from the best??? are you kidding??? he can do anything, he can express any feeling just with his eyes (there is no other actor who can do that), he can kick ass by himself (no stunts), he can ride horses, motorcycles *o*. He can be serious, mischievous, pretentious, sweet, cute, evil, sad, funny etc. and you always believe him! He cries for real, no need of eye drops like all those overrated actors around in addition to he is gorgeous and his manly voice can melt your heart. Well, Is just so sad to see again how underrated LJK is. He should be more appreciated.

Well, ikr. He has impeccable range and has the ability to completely disappear into roles in a way that makes you forget you’re watching. It’s criminal how underrated he is while mediocre actors get all the attention!

Really, is it so necessary to rain on someone else's parade? Everyone has their own faves, can't they even gush about them anymore, without getting meanie comments like yours? What, SO many better & very far from the best? Sawry, imo not so many & one of the better ones in the younger generation, and don't compare with the senior actors.

Sageuk action dramas are really hard work especially in the hot summer, with the gruelling live shooting schedules and dangerous & risky horse-riding/wire action stunts, not many actors are willing to do them. So, let's be nice and not belittle all these actors/actresses who are working their socks off in their heavy & hot costumes, getting drowned, jumping on rooftops, racing on horses, falling off cliffs etc. etc.

among the current generation of leading men, very few (Song Joong-ki has the potential but has never done a full sageuk as the lead).

unlike some people, I can admit my bias isn't perfect but he is one of the best there is at fusion sageuks, no doubt about that.

I would love to see Song Joon-ki and Jo In-sung reunite in another sageuk (preferably a drama). Loved Jo In-sung in sageuk attires/military armor plus he can wield a sword. Oh he rocks the mane of glory.

I'm watching this for Jun-ki, Lee Soo-Hyuk and the girls. I have low expectation because of this writer.

"I’d quip that he’s fully in character as the mysterious shadowy vampire, except that Lee Jun-ki has always kind of looked like a vampire"

LOL. Yunno it's a sad summer when I stop watching Gatsby and pick up Exo Next Door to kill time. But it did yield the epiphany that the blond dude in Exo should be cast as a vampire. Perhaps cast as a mute one, but cast nonetheless.

They look good in costume, I hope they recover well.
and I hope people stop whining about her casting now. Some people are such jerks that even when LJK/LYB injury was reported they were like 'I'm sure media is exaggerating and it's not a big deal, the REAL tragedy is KSE having no present love line with LJK!' and then, back pedalling hard when another fan said I was wrong to say that. They may be a minorities but they're this noisy...

Required fields are marked *

I think that is wrong for them to say that. Their injuries seems serious but their agency isn't allowing enough recovery time. :( As far as Kim So Eun, I was disappointed that she wasn't the lead but I am confident she will do well in her role. I just hope the writers allow her character(s) to have depth and have a proper storyline w LJK.

Lee Jun Ki must be a yangban in past life. He suits so well in hanbok!
I still can't see LYB as a cross-dresser, but it's okay, when the drama airs we can finally judge if she's good fit or not.

For me seeing LJK in any drama specialy in a sageuk is something I absolutely watch and enjoy (I endured the last four episodes of Gunman in Joseon just because of him). The only thing that worries me is that its the third fantasy role after Iljimae and Arang and the Magistrate for him. It seems that in the eye of directors hi is only fit for either action dramas (Hero,Two weeks) or Fantasy sageuk. I really like to see him do more serious roles as well.

Required fields are marked *

I agree. I'd like to see him in more serious roles as well as light romantic comedies and straight up melodramas. He would be so great in a role like that of Seok-hoon or Min-woo in Mask although Yeon Jung-hoon and Ju Ji-hoon are really nailing these two roles. Something with a bit of ambiguity and an anti-hero vibe He is one of my favourite actors with a lot of acting range. Plus he looks so very good in a suit. I'd also like to see him gain a bit of weight. He was so manly and a real hunk in Time Between Dog & Wolf!

Required fields are marked *

It's not that the directors think that LJK is only fit for action roles, but rather it is his preference to do such roles while he is younger. I think he has previously mentioned that the serious melodrama or romantic and less action-oriented roles can wait till he's older. I recall he turned down Angel Eyes, a romantic melodrama, and took up Joseon Gunman instead.

Recently, he did a romance movie which his fans are looking forward to, finally a romantic role!

And BTW, Iljimae isn't a fantasy.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think it is not that they are pushing these roles on him, it is just he is the best in that genre, plus in this case he looked like he stepped out of a picture from the original manhwa. I was saying from when they first announced the drama he MUST be the lead in this. It was also fan pressure, I think, his fans were dying to get him to do this role.

I'm hoping their makeup and costumes transfer well onscreen. Vampire dramas aren't convincing without good visuals to go with the story.

Lee Joon Gi is the if not THE go-to actor for romantic, action Sageuk Male lead. He looks great and can handle fight scenes and play tough guy/Scholar at will. I don't understand why he doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

He's one of the best in his age bracket but he gets overlooked in so many lists.
