Baek Jin-hee to headline new weekender from Jang Bori team
by girlfriday
Huh, I don’t know that I’d choose a weekend drama over the highly anticipated sageuk Six Flying Dragons, but who knows, the choice may not really have been in her hands. After dropping the SBS historical drama opposite Yoo Ah-in, Baek Jin-hee (Pride and Prejudice) is now in contention to headline the newest drama from the PD-writer team behind the hit MBC weekend drama Jang Bori Is Here.
The new 50-episode family drama is called I Am Geum Sa-wol, and comes from makjang hit-maker Kim Soon-ok, of Wife’s Temptation and Angel’s Temptation. She’s a writer known for her outlandish but juicy storylines and addictive, ratings-winning weekend dramas, and MBC is prepping for her next series this coming August.
Baek Jin-hee has been offered the leading role as the titular Geum Sa-wol, a geeeeeenius architect who’s born on the same day as the hero, and is therefore fated to love him. Well that’s a new. Are we sure they’re not also switched at birth or something? She’s described as a cheerful young woman with a bright nature, which seems a little at odds with the drama that’s about “someone who tries to hide the truth, and someone who’s out for revenge.”
But Jang Bori Is Here was a blend of traditional weekend family fare and the writer’s more straight-up makjang dramas, so I can see them sticking to a similar setup for as long as ratings will allow (Jang Bori was a solid 30-40% drama for MBC last year). I guess you can’t argue that Baek Jin-hee wouldn’t get higher ratings or more popularity from headlining a big weekender like this one, especially if it manages to recreate the success of Jang Bori.
I Am Geum Sa-wol is set to follow Queen’s Flower on Saturdays and Sundays beginning in August.

I quite like Baek Jin-hee, from what I've seen of her in Triangle she's well capable of investing your standard bright Candy heroine with a little more strength and presence (and making them a lot more likable in the process) than most actresses do in such roles.

Man, Jang Bori is Here was such a fun watch! If they have another awesomely psycho villain like Minjung who can pull it off like Lee Yubi I'm so there! It was a lot of fun watching Minjung and seeing what new twist or low she'd pull off (even if it was because some of the other characters were written stupid or blind).

I liked Jang Bori Is Here but by about episode 35 I was ready for it to end. But it was so addictive I had to watch it until the end so that I could get closure for things they had been dragging out since the start of the show. It was entertaining and horribly addictive but just got old by the end.

Or maybe SBS dropped her when SSK gave her nod. The reports said that the team wanted SSK from the beginning. Also, the news of her not being in the cast was released about the same time as SSK's confirmation.

Who knows, but I certainly don't mind a lot of her. I'm sure she'll do well as always :) and wouldn't mind seeing her in lighter fair after her more dramatic roles from her last few projects. At least until the makjang kicks in anyway, lol.

Well seeing as a lot of highly anticipated dramas haven't exactly been all that, I'd say she didn't exactly lose by dropping Six Flying Dragons. A lot of recognised names doesn't equal a good drama.

And also maybe she prefers not to act in a sageuk again so soon after ~50eps of Empress Ki last year..

And maybe she prefers MBC over SBS. She's been MBC Lead Girl for the last 2 years.

You're in this weird environment where morning soap operas rate better than "primetime" dramas. Of course, she's going to consider a weekend soap opera over a sageuk that is more likely to flop hard ("Hwajung" doesn't have exciting numbers for an MBC production, decent enough as they may be, and KBS and SBS' recent sageuk bombed really painfully). After all, both are not dramas that tend to attract the kiddie trendy drama demographic (the ones with the local purchasing power or international interest).

She's made in MBC, so she will stuck there no matter what in her conditions. But look at Joo Won, his last drama in KBS was a mess, then he can go to SBS.

Disappointed that she chose this over Six Flying Dragons, as sageuks interest me a lot more than weekend dramas. But who knows, maybe I'll like this one.

i prefer BJH in a sageuk/heavy character, but will check this for her. i hope in the future, she will get heavier character such as melodrama type..or maybe a character like tanashiri in empress ki..

I don't blame her for avoiding Six Flying Dragons, look at the last "highly anticipated" sageuk drama from SBS which also had lots of big names. She's better to avoid a flop like Secret Door...

this is just my opinion.
i'm inclined to think she made the right choice in picking this over six flying dragons.
because i think baek jin-hee is at that stage in her career where she really needs to prove that she can carry a show by herself. i know she was the female lead in pride and prejudice, which i thoroughly enjoyed and where i first started seeing promise in her. but though she was a lead, choi jin-hyuk was the bigger draw and had a slightly larger role.
i don't think she's done a role yet where she's had to carry a full show, much like oh yeon-seo did in jang bori. i know lee yuri got a lot of press for her villainess role, but oh yeon-seo did well too. baek jin-hee has played female leads, but mostly female leads who are there for the male leads. sort of a supporting character, but not the standard girl #2 role.
this show would be the better opportunity for her to stand out and try to shine on her own, without any bigger stars around. if she does six flying dragons, she'll be rather secondary to kim myung-min (HAS he confirmed?) and yoo ah-in. i just don't see her out-acting either of them.

yeah agree with you. Although the term "weekend drama" does not really interest me, doing this could maybe help her career and establish herself as a leading actress. I like her, but not sure I'll be watching this though. :(

As far as I'm concerned Oh Yeon Seo who won the K Drama "Excellence Award" for Jang Bori, is an exceptional actress and has proven her talent many times over. IMO Baek JH and SSK abilities are below average. So... I won't be sitting thru 16 eps, much less 52 with either one of these actresses. "Suum cuique"...

Makjang? Not sure I can take episodes of it. I never watched Jang Bori Is Here and I can't say I have a burning desire to do so even thought the lead won an award for her work.
I may have to save this for when I have the flu or something sorry to say.

I used to watched weekend drama. However, I have to pass as I am not into long weekend family drama anymore. I do lover in pride and prejudice. Although, I watch it more of Choi Min Soo in that drama.
