Who Are You–School 2015: Episode 10

Guilt is today’s theme, and nearly everyone gets a dose of it, whether it’s the fresh guilt of young friends coming to terms with painful secrets, or the stale guilt of old sins, buried a year ago with Jung Soo-in — and where there is guilt, retribution is sure to follow.

We’re homing in on her mystery, and it’s clear that she’s wrapped in tragedy — but I can’t help finding Teacher Jung creepy to the point of villainous. Is revenge scarier when it’s dealt out by pixies with cloying smiles and non-work-appropriate shorts?

(I’m just filling in for our purple friend today — living the dream and having my slice of the School pie!)

EPISODE 10 RECAP

We rewind to a little before the classroom showdown. Outside, So-young burns with resentment as the whispers and accusations of murder ring in her head.

At his competition, Yi-an gets her text saying she’s going to reveal Eun-bi’s secret — too bad he won’t be there.

When So-young returns, the class taunts and jeers at her. She pauses at Eun-bi’s desk with a cruel quirk of the lips, and proceeds to the front and gets everyone’s attention. Narrowing her eyes at Eun-bi, she confirms the rumors — she is that girl, and it was her school. But she asks them if they’re not curious about what the girl who died looked like.

As we saw last episode, Yi-an runs to make it to Eun-bi in time, and gets struck by a car. He lands heavily on his shoulder, and a crowd gathers to help him.

So-young smirks that there’s someone in their class who looks just like the girl who died. Eun-bi watches stonily on as So-young brandishes a picture of her old ID. Everyone is shocked by its likeness to Eun-byul, and their reaction gratifies her.

Tae-gwang has enough and rebukes her for causing trouble as soon as she arrived. She doesn’t know Eun-byul at all, he remarks, to be making any insinuations. He switches on that lazy grin and steps closer to her while she backs up, even dropping a friendly shoulder-pat. Turning to Eun-bi, he invites her to tell the class about it herself, since it’s her family matter. She stands up, about to speak, when Yi-an bursts in.

He confronts So-young, and turning to the class, announces that he’ll speak for Eun-byul since her memories are still gone. Noo, don’t! When So-young challenges him, he asks if there’s anyone knows her better. The class pipes down and keeping his eyes on Eun-bi, he tells them how she was adopted by her mother when she was five, and recently discovered the existence of a younger twin sister — the girl who was driven to suicide by So-young. Song-joo and Shi-jin are particularly affected by the revelation.

So-young flounders, and now Tae-gwang turns on her with a single question: The Lee Eun-bi she killed in Tongyeong is Go Eun-byul’s twin sister — true or false? She argues that Eun-bi isn’t dead, but this time Yi-an shuts her down with the keenest question of all: If she’s not dead, then who died? Caught in her own trap, and between the two boys, she can’t answer. Denounced by the class, her cries of denial go ignored.

After a last look towards Eun-bi, Yi-an brushes past her and leaves. But once out of the classroom, he clutches his shoulder and collapses in pain. Eun-bi, having followed him out, runs to his side.

Tae-gwang, meanwhile, follows So-young to the roof. He reminds her that he warned her that she’d come off worse in this showdown. And if she was responsible for Eun-byul’s death, the fallout would be even worse.

A doctor explains the seriousness of Yi-an’s shoulder injury to his father and the dean, but also notes that he had signs of previous injury, not from the accident, which comes as a shock to both men. He calculates that his recovery will take a year.

The dean comforts Dad with the assurance that Yi-an is strong and will bounce back. Outside Yi-an’s room, Dad takes a moment to wipe his eyes and collect himself. When he goes in, he’s brisk and cheerful. Yi-an is afraid he’s disappointed in him, which Dad rejects, and explains how he lost his head when he heard a friend was in an urgent situation.

Dad sweetly reassures him that it’s not the end of the world. When he was Yi-an’s age, he says conspiratorially, he caused all sorts of trouble — it’s what you do when you’re young, and damn the consequences. He tells Yi-an to look at it as an opportunity to rest up.

Eun-bi lingers outside Yi-an’s door. She hides when Dad comes out, but can’t bring herself to go in.

Song-joo accosts Shi-jin and links arms, ready to be friends again. She grumbles about Tae-gwang knowing Eun-byul’s secret when they didn’t, when the troublemaker in question cuts into their path, demanding to know if they’re badmouthing him.

The girls frown at him, and he snorts in disgust as they worry about Yi-an and extol his virtues. Shi-jin kindly asks him if he could try being half the guy Yi-an is, which makes him bite her head off. Hahaha.

Min-joon eavesdrops on his mom commandeering another mom to sign up for her tutoring group, which seems to cost an extortionate sum. She uses her own son’s performance as bait, which makes the other mom give in.

So-young’s mother, meanwhile, has an angry phonecall with her husband. She wants him to do something about the rumors spreading throughout the school about their daughter, and argues that the school isn’t big enough for both girls.

It seems he doesn’t bend, because she says she’ll take care of it herself. So-young — the picture of innocence in virginal white — gushes with (false) remorse and promises never to cause trouble again. Excuse me while I throw up in my shoes.

Eun-bi hovers outside Yi-an’s room again the next day, and gets surprised when he brushes by her. He says she might as well go in instead of lurking outside, so she does. They both have a hard time meeting each other’s eyes, and when she asks how he is, his replies are terse, almost cold.

She thanks him for his intervention the day before, and he retorts he didn’t do it for her. He wants her to leave if she’s done talking. Reluctant, she says she’ll go once she’s seen him eat, to his mounting irritation.

Tae-gwang strides in at that moment, and pops open pots of food while prattling about how bad hospital fare is, and he should know. Yi-an turns his aggression on him, swearing at him to get out. Only Eun-bi’s quick word stops Tae-gwang from retaliating.

Now ejected, Tae-gwang asks if she’s that worried about Yi-an. He offers to stay instead, but she turns him down — she wants to be there. “Should I wait?” he asks, in a voice quietly loaded with subtext and hope. She turns that down, too.

Coach tells Yi-an that a year isn’t so long. But Yi-an says that taking off even one day makes it hard to keep his edge, so what’s a whole year going to do? He trembles as tears escape, and it’s hard for Coach to see him struggle. He yells at him for leaving the meet like that, but then encourages him to dismiss his negative thoughts and focus on recovery.

Unseen by them, Eun-bi overhears the conversation, stricken.

Alone, Yi-an has trouble opening a water bottle one-handed, and throws it away in defeat. Eun-bi chooses to come in then, and opening it, she hands it to him. He knocks it out of her hand, and unleashes a torrent of anger, perhaps with a touch of humiliation. He doesn’t want to even have to look at her, and tells her not to come, not to call his name, and not to show herself to him.

Cut by his harsh words, she sobs quietly outside his room, where Tae-gwang finds her. He waited for her after all! Wordlessly, he sits next to her, and lays her head on his shoulder while she cries her heart out.

The next morning, Min-joon pauses in front of the school. Currents of students flow by him while he stays rooted and uncertain. He makes up his mind and reverses direction, away from school.

Teacher Kim instructs his class to get through the day quietly, singling out Ki-tae and Tae-gwang. He notes Min-joon’s empty seat — he messaged his absence earlier, asking Teach not to tell his mom.

Teacher Ahn congratulates Ki-tae and Tae-gwang on making the best grade on the English project. The two boys smirk and Ki-tae says she must have been surprised. “Yeah. I was,” she says darkly, “until ten minutes ago.” Oops, rumbled. They almost got away with their scam, but Teacher Jung’s sharp eye caught the brochure company’s watermark (LOL how can they be called “Team Fail”?). Ahn awards them a resounding fail, but poor deluded Ki-tae is more upset by the pretty trainee teacher’s betrayal.

Eun-bi crosses paths with Satan So-young in the library, and the latter girl scoffs at Eun-byul’s apparent clout at school. She coolly replies that So-young has her own presence — there’s probably not a person who doesn’t know her name. That cuts a little too close to home, and So-young taunts that while Yi-han is on her side for now, it won’t last. One by one, she’ll drive her friends away from her. Eun-bi tells her to worry about herself.

Out of sight, Song-joo happens to overhear the threat.

At lunch, So-young sits alone, but beckons Song-joo with a friendly wave, but she joins Eun-byul and Shi-jin instead. Ack, the atmosphere is so tense. Later, Song-joo ponders the contract she’s been offered by the agency. Aw, good for her for making it.

Teacher Jung solicits Teacher Kim’s help on some computer work and they get a little too cozy — which is most certainly calculated on her part — until the dean breaks it up (no in-office dating!). When he returns to his desk, he finds a workbook on it: Jung Soo-in’s. Taking it straight to Director Gong’s office, he slams it down in front of him.

“One year ago, the day Jung Soo-in died, it was on her desk,” he says. He tells the director that he’s not the one behind it — it must be someone else who was there that day. He cryptically asserts that they should have received their punishment back then, like he wanted to, “Otherwise, whether it be a year or two years, or forever, every time we remember, we will be punished.”

After he goes, Director Gong puts a call in to Detective Park (Min-joon’s dad) to check something about Soo-in’s case.

Shi-jin worries about Yi-an, and asks Eun-bi how he’s doing. Tae-gwang arrives again and rags on Shi-jin about her unending concern for swimmer-boy. He’s bothered her so much today, she complains — and has a sudden thought. Does he like her? He just…can’t even. Lol. Eun-bi excuses herself to go back to Yi-an at the hospital, which doesn’t make him happy.

We cut to Min-joon wandering the city as night falls, a lost look on his face.

Yi-an accusingly asks Eun-bi if she pities him, or if she’s sorry for lying to him all this time. He doesn’t even know what to call her, he tells her, and he’s afraid to look at her face. She agrees to leave, but says she’s coming back again tomorrow regardless, “So if you don’t want to see me, then get better quickly.”

Upset, she sinks to the floor outside his door. Her back to it, she confesses that she must not have been able to tell him about regaining her memory because she was afraid of this, so she kept telling herself, just one more day. It’s true she feels sorry for him, “But that’s not why I keep coming here. So…” Yi-an is just at the other side of the door, listening.

Yi-an is discharged and back at school. Teacher Kim spots him, and relieves him of his bag. That’s possibly the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen in my life ever. He chides him for not allowing visitors, and sheepishly confides that Yi-an’s dedication to his sport was inspiring to him. Yi-an tells him that this is all a little awkward, Teach giggles in agreement.

But his advice is heartfelt, and he tells Yi-an that he found from his own experience, when things go wrong at that age, it’s really difficult in the moment. But when a little time passes, it turns out not to be so bad after all. He cheers him on, and when the moment turns awkward again, so they head inside. So cute.

Min-joon admits to Teacher Kim that he ended up playing truant by studying in the library, to pass the time, and because he had nowhere to go. When you study, he tells him, the hours go by far too fast. There’s something desperately heartbreaking in how defeated he is, and Teach gently asks if he should speak to his mom again.

At home, Min-joon stares at a webpage for reporting illegal tutoring, his head swirling with the recent pressure of the notebook scandal, Mom’s militant study regime, and her determination to make him succeed at any cost.

So-young meets up with Song-joo, whose brusque manner perturbs her. She fishes for sympathy, and Song-joo coldly asks if she ever really saw her as a friend, or was she merely using her to get to Eun-byul? So-young holds her audition up as proof of her sincerity. Playing her last card, she calls her uncle then and there, to confirm a contract. She relaxes, confident she’s won her back.

Taking the phone, Song-joo raps out that she can’t sign with him, and cuts the call. With open contempt, she tells So-young that although she wants to become a celebrity, she’s not so worthless as to sell her friends for it. She wants to turn Eun-byul’s friends away from her? “That won’t be so easy, Kang So-young,” she vows.

Education Ministry officials bust Min-joon’s study group that evening, and at home, detective Dad is beside himself at the level and extent of Mom’s illegal activities. Confounded, she asks if it was really Min-joon who reported her.

Both parents come out when they hear him get in. After a long moment, he turns to face his mom. Gah he looks so broken. She just tells him to wash up, since he has to eat and study. How is it possible for those words to make him look even more broken? Their reflection in the coffee table neatly captures how terribly upside-down his world’s become.

So-young’s mom barges her way into Director Gong’s office at school. She introduces herself as Prosecutor Kang’s wife, which has him immediately solicitous. She shows him Eun-bi’s old ID and proceeds to tell him about how her poor daughter was victimized by her back in Tongyeong. Now she’s in the same class as the twin sister, who’s making life hard for her. This heart. It bleeds. She demands Eun-byul’s removal from the school. Lady, you move! It’s not like her departure will end whispers about So-young — if anything, it’ll be worse.

The lunch group has diversified, meanwhile, and Eun-bi is surprised to find Yi-an sitting with Song-joo and Shi-jin. After a moment’s hesitation, she joins them, and Tae-gwang follows (because, where she leads~♫). She and Yi-an jostle elbows uncomfortably, since with his right side out of commission, he clumsily eats left-handed.

Tae-kwang plops a piece of food on Yi-an’s spoon, which weirds everyone out and Yi-an shakes off. Oh, man, this bromance needs to happen. Yes? Yes! Song-joo wonders what’s up with him, and he snaps that he’s helping. Shi-jin: “That might be so, but when you do it, it’s a bit scary.”

Detective Park drops by Director Gong’s office to drop off the report on Soo-in’s death. The list of people present at the time includes the two of them, Teacher Kim, Soo-in’s mom…and Go Eun-byul, the only student. The name catches the director’s attention and he rings for the class register.

In a meeting, the teachers discuss the unresolved notebook case, and the pressure on the kids to achieve higher rankings. The vice principal pops in to collect the register for the director from Teacher Kim, and Teacher Jung offers to take it to him.

While in his office, she spots the death report on the table and smiles. Detective Park notes her interest. As soon as she comes out, she calls her mom, and tells her to wait just a bit longer — they’re nearly there.

Teacher Kim receives a transfer order — for Eun-byul. Agitated, he confronts Director Gong again. The director coolly counters that there’s more than adequate justification for it, citing her unauthorized absence at the school trip, threatening the karaoke owner, and the jewellery theft. He flatly ignores Kim’s objections and concludes her departure is all for the best. What a fine man.

When school is out, Tae-gwang rolls by on his electric unicycle and invites Eun-bi to hop on, which is silly. Instead, he suggests a round of rock, paper, scissors — loser carries the unicycle. They loosen up and Eun-bi scores a win, when Director Gong passes by. The sight of his son stops him, and it’s only then that’s he realizes the girl he’s laughing and joking with is (he thinks) Go Eun-byul.

Elsewhere, a capped girl moves through a corridor, and all we see is her silhouette shadowing marble walls. Oh my god — is it…? It is. She stops in front of Eun-bi’s memorial vault, and we see her reflection in the glass.

It’s Eun-byul. The real one.

COMMENTS

I knew it! Okay, fine, we all knew it. She’s aliiiiive! But we can leave the mystery of where she’s been and why for now, since that’s sure to come to light very soon. (Is anyone else constantly having Lying Game flashbacks? In a good way!)

While the majority of 2013′s conflicts centered on the lone-wolf kinds, the ones left to somehow fend for themselves in much harsher circumstances, 2015′s parents all play active roles in their kids’ lives. But this episode really brings home how many ways there are to lose your kid — because, one way or another, every parent does. Eun-byul’s mom’s loss (and Soo-in’s) is the most obvious, but the others are no less real. Min-joon’s mom breaks his spirit (and heart); So-young’s parents nurture a monster with their entitled and enabling behaviour, and failure to ever take her to account. Even Shi-jin’s mom reduces her daughter to little more than her personal Mary Sue, projecting an imaginary daughter in place of her real one, despite Shi-jin’s loud cry for help. Yi-an’s dad remains the only unambiguously good parent, but he also suffers a distancing (through no fault of his own) with Yi-an closing up emotionally after his career-threatening injury. Only Yeong-eun’s mom (of the stolen jewellery in the early episodes) has managed to regain her kid — but look at what it took.

I’m a bit disappointed in Yi-an this episode. His rescue of Eun-bi cements why he’s not my ship, because there’s heroic, and there’s not listening, and it all comes down to respecting agency (my favorite thing). While what he did isn’t anywhere near as horrible or ill-intended as So-young, he still revealed her secret without her assent, which he had no right to do (or confirmed her lie, if you want to go glass half-full).

I don’t think being young and impetuous is a valid argument, because our goldilocks Tae-gwang proves the opposite. But I do recognize that Yi-an’s vocal and public championing of her, and the pincer-attack the two boys executed against So-young, both protected and advanced Eun-bi’s mission in a way she wouldn’t have been able to do alone. This is what’s great about the friends’ development this episode: Once So-young is exposed as a threat, they close ranks and form a wall of protection around her, and that support and loyalty is what sets the two girls most keenly apart.

So-young’s manipulations become clumsier as she meets defeat after defeat. Her attacks have a certain modus operandi, but once her script is derailed and she’s threatened, she crumbles, at least momentarily, because she’s not really a person — she’s a papier-mâché shell. When you peel backs the layers of manipulation and mindgames, she’s empty inside. Her whole self-concept is predicated on her winning, and that’s what stimulates and drives her. In other words: It’s all for kicks and giggles. So-young has to come out on top, no matter the scale or deed, pushing people’s buttons and dominating them. And also being the top-ranked student, because why not?

She shows little evidence of deep emotion or empathy, or an ability to interpret the complex and contradictory emotions of others even if she doesn’t experience it the same way. Like her whole meet with Song-joo, while she knows something is off, she can’t compute that she’s lost — she thinks she can still win if she provides the requisite moves. That’s what governs her decisions. Things like loyalty and sincerity are totally alien to her. She may or may not be a psychopath, but she has a ton of essential pieces missing. Like a heart. And a conscience.

Contrast that to Eun-bi’s deeply empathetic response to Yi-an and his reaction to her true identity (which I don’t like, but do understand). It’s easy to say it’s not fair — and it isn’t — for him to punish Eun-bi for not being her sister, or for his accident, but his personal struggle is so evident that it’s hard to hold it against him, and I think that explains Eun-bi’s response. With grief of her own, she’s no stranger to pain. Even if Yi-an’s pain isn’t the same, it’s all too easy for her to relate.

This is another reason why Tae-gwang squeezes my heart. He’s similar to Eun-bi, but even more contained, rarely giving away how much things cost him emotionally. Although he pulls on that mask of cheerful indifference, his easy demeanor and ready-to-help attitude when it comes to Eun-bi makes him that much more tragic, because it’s so painfully clear how unloved he is. And that’s what makes him sensitive — it’s a great point of contrast between him and Yi-an, whose thoughtlessness is, in a way, a symptom of the abundance of love he receives. Experiencing that care means he hasn’t been ravaged by the lack of it, so the small things that mean a lot to love-starved Tae-gwang (and Eun-bi) don’t make a blip on his radar.

I think these relationships hold more complicated geometry than your ordinary love-triangle, as they each struggle just to have a friendship that doesn’t cut like a knife whichever way they turn it. There may be latent feelings between Eun-bi and the two boys, but with the tension and anxiety over whether their basic points of connection can survive, the possibility of romance comes secondary to that. This is why Eun-byul’s resurrection is even more interesting, because it brings with it the possibility to return some things to their rightful places. I don’t mean there’ll be a neat shipping solution (haha), but at least the conflict that was created by her supposed death will take some knives out of some hearts. Of course, there will be new ones going in, but alive is always better than dead.

I always had an inkling that Eun Byul will be alive since the story always said, a story of one sister taking place of another. It never said that one of them died and the other took her place. Other than that, I agree about the distinction you made between Yi An and Tae Kwang but at the end of the day, it feels like Eun Bi has feelings for him, so game over for TK.

So Young is really something... How can her mother make it seem like Eun Bi tormented and bullied her daughter? I can't even...

Assuming that is Eun-byul, yay my prayers are answered. She can take annoying, misguided, possessive Yi-an off Eun-bi's hands so Eun-bi can be with sweet Tae-gwang.

I'm not sure I agree with you 100% on So-young. There are times she looks vulnerable and human when she's alone thinking about how her peers treat her. Granted I suck at reading peoples faces so maybe I'm misreading her, and she always follows that up by doing something that proves she hasn't learned anything.

I'm more curious about what's Dad gonna do after finding that Eunb(i)yul is his idiot-son's the one and only love interest than what's real Eun-byul's going up to.

Thanks, Saya for recapping! XD

Goshhhh seriously i give up on this shipping. After all, it's school series which friendship is more value than romance (denial statement).
So now i'm trying to calm myself waiting Yook Sungjae's voice for upcoming ost. God with Yook Sungjae the rating-maker.

I don't think he's the rating maker. Kim So-hyun is the heart of this show, and she does so damn well in each episode.

THANK YOU for the recap!! You summed up my thoughts on this show in a very eloquent and succinct way. My favorite part of this episode was Song-joo telling So-young off and turning down that contract offer. I love how at the core, she didn't forget her loyalty and friendships and took that chance to be confident and badass and reject that offer of a contract, despite how much it means to her to succeed in the entertainment business.
I agree with pretty much everyone's thoughts on Yi-an speaking for Eun-bi in the beginning. I was so excited when Tae-gwang gave her the platform to speak this episode and when Yi-an barged in and talked over her it really took me aback.
Speaking of Yi-an, I totally understand where he's coming from with his reaction to Eun-bi and to the accident. He's dealing with emotional gut punch after gut punch and he's only getting to process it now. His behavior makes sense to me. With regards to him and Eun-bi, she definitely likes him (my poor bb Tae-gwang <3) but I'm not sure if he has feelings for her or not. To me, his going back for her in the beginning of the episode was less an indication of feelings than loyalty and an obligation to protect the sister of the friend he grew up with and likes. He is confused and hurt and all over the place, but he won't let something terrible happen to someone who doesn't deserve that, not with the information he knows about her past.
And lastly, my heart broke when Eun-bi rejected Tae-gwang at the hospital. I could see the hope and unspoken messages in his question and when she straight up turned to him and said "No." I felt terrible. That was just...kind of a really shitty way to reject someone.
Also, is it just me or has Eun-bi been suuper weepy lately? I was also really frustrated with her refusal to give Yi-An any space or her lack of realization that Yi-An didn't want to be around her. I like the strides she's made over the past few episodes regarding showing more strength (definitely love how badass she can be around So-young now), but she always turns into this sad sack around Yi-An and it's just really disheartening to see. That fact alone keeps me from shipping that pair.

Not sure if it's only me but when Tae-kwang asked "should I wait for you" it's like he didn't mean just that moment, but like "should I wait for you to come to me". And when she said "No" my heart broke into pieces. Girl how can't you fall for such a guy I.just.don't.understand. Grr. I now even wish TK had a goal in life and given up on her so that he can be happy because it's saddening to see him like that. Or just come to all noona fans you gained recently lol.

Maybe there will be a turning point where she is there for him and comes to him. It is a bit strange and seems almost deliberate how there is no one supporting him, even min join can talk about his issues with someone and has someone to potentially relate to in future episodes (shi jin)

I don't get why he should give up on her. She's still his friend. I could see this show ending very open ended and the romance is not really obvious one way or the other. I want him to become friends with other kids in school as well and have a happy life. He doesn't have to get with Eun Bi to do that.

The thing is only 'she' sees him as a friend. Taekwang is definitely not seeing her like that and he makes it pretty obvious in his actions. How she doesn't realize that is still a mystery to me. And I actually don't believe he can just be a friend to her without any romantic feelings in the future too. I can't imagine them hanging out together in a friends circle like nothing happened.

TK's family issues and how he will change as a person has become more important for me at this point.

I think they could. The thing is TK hasn't had friends, let alone a girlfriend so what he feels could actually be more the love of a friend than a girlfriend. He's starved for attention and love and once he gains more of it, he might eventually realize he's not "in love" with Eun bi. You could also say the same thing for YA as well, that what he feeling is sibling love more than romantic love. Like I said, I don't think this drama is going to end with a really obvious OTP since they are kids, but friends who care for each other and hopefully sisters who are together. It would seriously be a shame if either one of the guys cuts off contact with Eun Bi/Byul.

@lemondoodle and mel - I like some of the points that you guys mentioned. It is probably more important for TK to gain friends than a girlfriend. And it would be nice to see his family issues resolved; also the problems of the other kids' lives too. I don't want a miracle ending for this drama. A realistic ending will be good, like that of School 2013. It's also a possibility that there will not be an obvious OTP. But this series emphasized romance more than School 2013; so maybe they are intending to pair EBi with one of the guys. Looks like my ship will sink. Makes me kinda sad but if they give me a happy (or on-the-road-to-definite-happiness) TK, that will be great!

Am I the only one who wonders if God forbid, soo in had a "relationship" with taekwangs dad? Something which left her feeling tattered, might explain why the homeroom teacher is so so mad at the director and haunted over the girl's death to the point of ptsd.

"Yi-an's thoughtlessness?" Excuse me. It's that you are totally biased on your shipping divide or you just lack human understanding of grief and its stages (but I guess it's the former). How is he not fair in being angry? How is what he's done thoughtless and selfish? Would you have found any other way to settle that problem? Tell me. I don't mind in the grand scheme of things that you ship one over the other, but please try to analyze each person from their own standpoint and from where they're coming from.

But it's just the 10th episode anyway, so I guess all that's said and done can still take a turn around? But for the moment, let me lament my anger over here.

Can I just....Min-joon. </3 He breaks my heart in a million ways, and that scene where he just aimlessly walks around the streets, everything a blur to him - it's heart-wrenching. His kind of pain is the dangerous, insidious kind - where no one realises that it's happening until the damage is already done. It's painful seeing him bottle everything up.

For me after the faceoff between the trio in the opening scene the whole episode belonged to min joon.

I totally understand him and the last scene where he look completely devastating to know there is no escaping his mom and her demands felt real and I just want his dad to do something and not just stand there when you son youthfulness is destroyed by your wife.

Because I have no idea how to solve his problems unless his mom got a change of heart ♥ his life is not going to get better. ?

But i am looking forward to his storyline next week ?

Yay! My... Our guts are right. Eun byul is alive! Can't wait for the next episode to see how she will clean the big mess. The previous episodes have shown the threats that were made to soo-young without revealing who set it. I have a feeling that eun byul was just wandering around, observing and helping her sister's problem towards soo-young. I think the former was the one who revealed the demons of the later.

Even though the characters are coming on the light, we, who understands them more after every episode, the main part is still missing so i'm anticipating for it for now.

I see that eun bi doesn't have romantic feelings for tae, only says he's a good memory for her. I'm totally happy to see that he, who hasn't recieved any love even from his own father, still gets to love and take care of eun bi. Because you know, some people would commit suicide if they were in the same situation. So at this point, i wouldn't mind if eun bi wouldn't end up with him ( but it shouldn't be yi an x eun bi too) As long as they're happy without having romantic feelings towards each other, as long as they would recieve lots of love as much yi an x ehn byul were recieving in the previous episodes then i'm good.

I see that eun bi has no romantic feelings towards tae but also doesn't show romantic feelings towards yi an. I totally feel like she was just out there visiting him out of conscience and that made her look out for him. It honestly felt like she was just there, trying to be involved and attached to yi an for the sake of her sister (of course). In contrary to tae where she could totally feel at ease. But it's still too vague to conclude who she would end up since she was just reaching out to the boys as friends.

Whenever I see someone comment on the fact that Eun Byul being alive will mean TK + Eun Bi and Yi Ahn + Eun Byul, I think: dream on. Whatever helps you sleep better right?

As someone already mentioned, I think that the real love triangle would be between Eun Bi, Yi Ahn and Eun Byul. Taking note that Yi Ahn may have started developing feelings for Eun Bi, it seems that the only way that they might end up together is a darker aspect of Eun Byul's deception coming up which would eventually gear Yi Ahn towards Eun Bi. I may be wrong on this but we'll just have to wait and see.

It is sad to watch TK's longing for Eun Bi so, I am truly happy that I don't have second lead syndrome in this drama. I think the writers are throwing some kind of comic relief into his side of the story by adding those cute, funny moments with Shin Jin.

I keep fearing for Min Joo. He was really brave to turn in his mother's criminal actions, but not brave enough to fess up to his own crime. Hopefully, he doesn't become suicidal in the future. Anyway, however this drama turns out, I hope that So Young eventually gets what she deserves.

Eunbyul is alive!!! As someone pointed out in another drama I watched, if there's no dead body seen on screen, the person is not dead. It makes me wonder though what she has been scheming off screen all this time.

I'd like to see more of the Jung Soo In mystery. I feel like this deserves more spotlight because it has been lingering since episode 1. Yes we now know that the new teacher is her sister. But all that has happened so far are empty threats in the form of text messages, the library book, and the math book. Why did Soo In commit suicide? How is the homeroom teacher and the chairman connected to this case? If they said that Eunbyul was friends with Soo In back then, then why is she the one getting the threats? What exactly is her sister trying to achieve and what actions will she take towards it other than send empty threats to scare the people involved and join the faculty? I feel bad for Eunbi because she's going to take the hit when the new teacher strikes but at least Enbyul is alive to set things right.

I'm glad that Soo Young is getting what she deserves. She was able to mess with Eunbi in Tongyeong because she had friends but messing with her in Sekang is a bad idea since Eunbyul is popular and has many friends and trying to mess with a girl like that would likely have a bad outcome. All her focus on humiliating Eunbi would ultimately lead to her downfall. Like Taegwang said, the revelation would hurt her more than it would hurt Eunbi. I'm still frustrated at her parents though who help foster this kind of attitude. Really, the mom is telling the chairman that Soo Young is the victim? A testimony from class 3 should be enough to prove that that isn't the case. If the mom was really bothered by Soo Young being in Eunbi's class, why not transfer Soo Young herself? After all, the whole class pretty much hates her already so might as well as start anew somewhere else. Eunbi/Eunbyul's mom really needs to have a confrontation with Soo Young's mom.

"His rescue of Eun-bi cements why he’s not my ship, because there’s heroic, and there’s not listening, and it all comes down to respecting agency (my favorite thing). While what he did isn’t anywhere near as horrible or ill-intended as So-young, he still revealed her secret without her assent, which he had no right to do (or confirmed her lie, if you want to go glass half-full)."

YES YES YES YES YES! So well written :)

I'm totally on the Tae-Gwang ship for exactly this reason. Whereas Tae-Gwang encourages (and appreciates) Eun-bi for who she is... Yi-an completely overrides her to try and force her to be who HE wants her to be. Even granted that it is a difficult situation for him to absorb... I really can't stand how he only really sees things from his own perspective.

@ dramabird

I didn't see this until I posted my comment (the 66th one). And I'm so glad to see some Tae Kwang shippers in this post at last. I think that the comment you quote is my favorite as well. ^^

I didn't even know there were so many Han Yi An shippers until I went to dramabeans.

Well, chances of Eunbi ending up with Taekwang are slim, however we look at it. But it's not making Yian-Eunbi any more coherent from where I'm standing, and I'm saying this not because I'm a fan of the actor playing Taekwang, or because I like "bad" boys, or because I think he's cuter.

It wouldn't be incoherent for Eunbi to end with Yian, story-wise. Her relationship with Taekwang grew more steadily since the beginning, but she always cared more about Yian and there's time for him to realize that he now likes her (especially now that Eunbuyl is coming back, that could make him realize that he no longer has feelings for her, but for her sister). It makes for good conflict too.

I think that where the loveline would be incoherent is in terms of character development. As a writer, having taken creative writing courses, I know that you can't force characters to do anything. Once you create good, 3d characters with personalities and backgrounds of their own, they have a life of their own and you should sit back and watch them take the lead of the story. It feels like Eunbi ending up with Yian would be the writers forcing them to, not the characters naturally ending up together.

Maybe story-wise, Eunbi-Yian makes sense, but character-wise, they really don't match. Couples typically complement each other, one way or another, but they don't. Not the way Eunbyul-Yian and Eunbi-Taekwang do. If you look at the drama superficially and stop at the story, you'll be satisfied. But for people like me, who look deeper into the characters' essence, we're bound to be dissatisfied. There was the potential to end the show with great pairings that felt natural and real, but the writers had to ruin it. That's just how it's going to feel.

After ep. 8 I totally just stopped watching the drama and just read the recaps now. Idk, I feel this show has been dragging for the last couple weeks. & maybe it's just me being picky but I for one, DON'T like how (imo) the director/writers/producers or whatever, has been making others fight eunbi's fights for her. I don't like how it's either TK or YA running in to save the dasmel in distress ad I understand & appreciate the whole proecting her thing but I think it's about time eunbi step up and seriously fight her own battles. I would also like it if she were able to solve the soo in mystery by herself rather then have eunbyul come back into her life and tell her. Idk, I like eunbi because she's sweet and all but I don't feel as if she properly utilizes her agency and strength. It seriously annoys me because I hate how females/female leads in kdramas always need rescuing and proecting and I'm so over that. I wish all female leads were like MCW in princess man because she was kickass.

anyway, I don't ship anyone anymore because it seems the producer is desperate for an eunbi/YA pairing (even tho how is that possible since his one true crush eunbyul is still alive, but whatevs) and have by now decided that eunbi is now deserving of TK. if someone treats you that well WITHOUT asking for anything in return and he still pine for the perfect altheletic popular boy then girl, you really are just a stupid lil high school girl (which you are, but come on eunbi, I thought you were better than that.) TK deserves better than her. so i don't ship them. f it

I like taw gwang and I really hate it when all his kind deeds go unappreciated. I understand eun bi is on full yi an mode since he lost his best friend, swimming career and all.

But when someone remains so helpful to you, it an basic wish that the person is treated with more appreciation

I don't want her to love tae gwang because he helps her but just spend some time with him too.

Because I loved the eun bi in the first few episodes who genuinely spend some quality time with him and now it might be the writers err but we don't get any casual scenes between them. I know there are few good scenes between them but I do want more.

Also it might because I like tae gwang and such but i just don't like the way yi an is written.

We were shown that his shoulder was causing him pain from the beginning. We knew it was going to become a plot line so why was it suddenly changed into a heroic deed.

Let me get this straight. My problem is not with yi an ignoring his shoulder pain or him trying to save eun bi. Just the way writers chosen to play the particular script for dramatic moments.

Unlike min joon plot line. When his mom was introduced we knew this track will be highlighted and when it did I felt no regret about the script. Because it was not forced or elevated for dramatic moments but felt realistic.

I love tae gwang. Here to hoping the whole my dad is the chairman of sekang which will be next week plotting is executed well and not written just for dramatic faceoff between the characters.

SHE‘S ALIVE WHEEEEEE!

I knew it! I think Teacher Kim is blaming himself for not noticing Soo-in's symptoms and he's angry at the director for covering it up. Eun-byul probably unintentionally hurted Soo-in and feels guilty. Ehehe shall keep watching. Next episode is today!!!

One thing I don't understand: Whose ashes are those? How did Eun-byul fake her death?

Unless that girl wasn't Eun-byul... nooooo

Anyways thanks Saya!

I'm just on-board with the writer with where the emotional conflicts are flowing. My thoughts on the end pairing did swing from Tae-gwang & Eun-bi to Yi-an & Eun-bi because of how the story was unfolding. As its all realistic and makes sense to me so I swing that way as well.

There are those who dislike Yi-an because of his actions, which some even termed "abusive behaviour". Choking Tae-gwang? Well isn't that just how boys tension play out, always physical? Tae-gwang even rebutted, "you are acting like the old me". Shaking out Eun-bi or throwing water at her? From what I reckon, when Yi-an & Eun-Byul fight they are quite physical, too. Actually, they are simply physical towards each other. Remember Yi-an easily hugs or tackles Eun-Bi/Byul? That's just how close they are. So shaking Eun-Bi, shouting at her, throwing water at her, I don't see it reflective of being abusive. Oh did he stole Eun-Bi's thunder? some already stated the fact that he was in fact been acting on Mom's request to keep Eun-Byul's secret, which makes sense that he speak up for the supposed still amnesiac Eun-Byul. Otherwise, is Eun-Bi supposed to out herself in front on the class. I think that's why she was still grateful and relieved that she wouldn't have to openly lie again. It's one thing to find the courage to out herself to Yi-an or have her secret be known to Tae-gwang but to let everyone know and be the center of gossip again; that might still be too early to handle for a traumatized girl. Let the girl take her baby steps.

Are you serious? Someone choking someone else is "boys tensions playing out?"

Are you going to say that the girls dumping flour and water on Eun-bi is just how girls tensions plays out too since it's just flour and water after all?

Where do you draw the line?

@alua, hmm actually 'twas pretty simple to me. Tae-gwang said it himself as I've already written. Tae-gwang himself had been mostly fisti-cuffs whenever he gets totally annoyed with other guys. It totally depends on their mood to react or not. But Tae-gwang and Yi-an are not actually presented as bullies here. Did you see that as a death choke from Yi-an? I can't find me words there where I discussed about Eun-Bi's experienced with the meanie girls as "mere tension playing out". So can't see where you're reacting from. I even used the word "traumatized" for Eun-Bi which obviously brings her experience on a different level.

I totally agree with you. No matter how lovely Yian is, I can't help but root for Tae Kwang. If I were Eun Bi, the guy I would choose is Tae Kwang. He has a very nice character that makes me feel that it's real. A character that would make a girl's heart flutter. I fall for boys who knows how to comfort girls without being annoying and that's how Tae Kwang portrayed his role. I hope that Eun Bi would not only focus on Yian only but also on Tae Kwang who has put so much effort for her sake. I hope there would come a time that she would mind to know how miserable Tae Kwang's life is and I hope that she would comfort her as well. He might not be injured physically, but he is injured emotionally. Yian's reaction might be understandable but I think he really can't be with Eun Bi. He is for Eun Byul and Eun Byul needs him too.

The Story line of the drama has some little bit similarity with the US TVSERIES http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lying_Game
Similarities:
1. The other Got adopted into a rich family have an abundant life while the other twin suffers.
2. The rich twin was the one to find the other and use her to stand in her place to do something on her on.
3. Rich twin lover has fallen in love to the poor twin.
4. They deceive people around them.
5. Rich twin is a pain in the ass and the poor twin is so nice.
6.Highschool set

Here's another drama that has a somewhat similarity
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bump_Off_Lover
In this drama the other twin did die and the other is seeking revenge.
they are in High school

Can't wait for the ep 13 & 14 I'm to into it that I began having theories on what would happen next.

Theories:
1. They'll live together, go to school together eun bi to tae kwang eun byul to yi an

2. One of them will did for good because they have a week body or someone will kill them

3. They would keep their secrets but they'll change when ever they want.

4. Both of them will bring so young and soo in down along with the help of the 2 boys...

5. They will find their real parents and see how that unfolds
6. One of the two will go to abroad for self reflection(Go Eun Byul)

7. Eun Bi would be in college...

8. Eun bi & Eun byul would live together with their mom min young transfer school after they
face their problems with so young and soo in. They won't have love life since they are still in
High school they'll just be friends with the two boys keeping in touch.

9. So young will kill one of the twins bet it's (gong byul) or harm in a massive way enough
for so young to be punish for by the law and will got his father humiliated or get fired.
Got this idea because of the threat soyoung said in
episode 8.

10. Eun byul is back they'll be happy first, then shock, then ask her why did she do it.
she runaway will eun bi face her problems for her. Eun bi will be back in the orphanage
and yi an will just visit her...

11. Scene Guess: Eun bi and Eun byul fighting about something. Eun byul hurting eun bi.
Tae Gwang and Yi An saw it. Tae kwang grab eun bi, yi an is left by eun byul to deal with.

i dont get it.. why she dont want to tell everyone the current eun-byul is actually eun-bi when she got the chance?? (wasnt she trying to prove it all along and isnt it her objective of this scene? she got evidence on the handwriting to back up too.. )

anyway i dont know why she just refuses to back down when ultimately she's the one at losing end (even her father also ask her to rest the matter since the case is closed as her being the victim).. if expose, eun-bi at most lied to everyone and hide her identity (what can she be punish for? identity theft? its not like she murdered her twin sister and took her place), but its nothing big deal once they know the truth and past of eun-bi..

I'm gonna disagree on what you said about Yi Ahn - I think his response to Eun Bi's confession is how anyone would've responded. Although, of course, Eun Bi is going through a lot, she did lie to him. She pretended to be the girl he loved, and that's gotta be tough on him.

I am going to agree with you on what you said about So Young, as complicated as you explained it, lol. I've said before that So Young cannot grasp the idea that she's in the wrong. She needs to get herself together, for sure.

I'm so excited to see Eun Byul alive and (at least physically) well. She could ruin So Young's life with a flip of her hair and look good doing it. I'm so ready for some badass Eun Byul/Eun Bi scenes! These writers better give me what I'm looking for.

As for your last statement, "alive is always better than dead," maybe for Eun Byul. But I don't know, I think I'd prefer So Young dead rather than alive. Too much?
