Two Su Aes, one Mask

Oh, is THIS what Mask is actually about — a switched-places doppelganger story? There was no mention before of Su Ae playing two characters, but there’s no doubt about it in the teaser below, where the two Su Aes come face to face in wide-eyed shock to run into each other for the first time. The producers should have just called this Who Are You—Mask 2015, or maybe Masked School: The Grown-Up Years, because it’s essentially the exact same premise, just set in the chaebol world rather than high school.

[I suppose I should sound a general School 2015 spoiler alert, just in case you don’t want to know what that show’s up to!]

In the teaser below, Su Ae plays a well-to-do woman who finds out she has a doppelganger “living an entirely different life,” working at the fancy department store where she shops. Things get shady when one Su Ae ends up dead—murdered?—whom we see lying cold on a morgue slab; the villain of the piece, Yeon Jung-hoon, suggests a deal that would change someone’s life. The remaining doppelganger/twin ends up with Joo Ji-hoon, which explains previous descriptions of the character being keen to hide her identity in order to marry into the chaebol fold. Yoo In-young rounds out the main cast as Yeon’s wife, whose feelings for her spouse go unrequited.

It’s uncannily similar to the plot of Who Are You—School 2015, where one twin takes the place of another living a better life. School doesn’t have murder, chaebols, or marriages in its plot (…that we know of yet), but thematically it feels like we’re getting the same story, with the heroine navigating a new identity while trying to hide her old one. I highly doubt one drama copied the other, but it does make me wonder what Mask’s writer thought when he got scooped on the switched-lives plotline. Were curses uttered, things thrown? I wouldn’t blame him, but the early bird gets the worm and all that.

Mask kicks off its mysterious, revenge-driven, secret-laden run on May 27 on SBS.

Anyone watched US series "Ringer" by Sarah Michelle Gellar? This twin/doppelgange theme from both series reminds me so much about it.

Btw JJH never look this handsome before. Why this need to be another melo? I want to see him in rom-com again.

Why does Soo Ae have the same exact expression in the posters of both characters she's playing? I can't tell if the posters are of two different characters or just one.

Either way, this does not sound appealing. And that trailer is so ridic and makjang laced. It could pull in somewhat decent ratings, but damn if the writer's previous work is anything to go by, this will be invaded by tons of convoluted characters and dysfunctional relationships.

Either Soo Ae is the same character having assumed the identity of the doppleganger or if not, one would assume that that the 2 are similar in more than just looks if one can assume the identity of the other.

Well... since the premise is roughly School 2015 chaebol version, that drama shows us that two characters don't need to have anything similar other than looks so they can take over from the other.

Kim So-hyun managed to have a different expression for two different characters in her poster. Or Hyun Bin in HJM, Ji Sung in KMHM, etc etc. Soo Ae looks exactly the same with different clothing. Not that I'm gonna judge someone's acting based on a poster because we all know what she's capable of. But regardless, it doesn't feel like two people.

I am so ready for the makjang fest, bring it on! I need my yearly dose of melo from dramaland and this might be it because I just love this cast.

About the similarities with School 2015, while we can't uness it I doubt the approach will be anything alike

Mask's writer and Who Are You-School 2015's PD worked on "Secret Love" together last time. So that may explain why they get the same concept this time.

YES !!! Bring it !!! I'm so ready for this full on high society melo, crying out loud, hair pulling, slapping, yet somehow still classy Makjang madness !!!!! I love Su Ae and she definitely fit the melo gendra, Secret was terribly addicting, I'm hoping for the best with this one + Joo Ji-hoon is back on our screen.

He's great in romantic comedy, but loved his persona in "Vampire Prosecutor" even thought he wasn't a bad guy. Don't know if I've seen him as a true bad guy, but I haven't seen any of his movies or dramas older that "East of Eden".

I laugh out loud reading this sentence.. It just kills me that two dramas that air at almost same time have exact same premise, just different setting. :)

A tinsy off topic but I like how whoever edited those character shots put a lot of emphasis on the eyes.

I want to watch this, I couldn't read the article because I wanna watch School 2015 eventually but I read doppelganger and I like it, it's good, lol. Plus with the writer of Secret, this is bound to be fun That show was too damn watchable and it was so wild!

school2015 & the lying game is almost the same = school, and the twin that went missing- its not also sure if alive or dead.

with this mask and ringer = I think in ringer both characters are still alive unlike with what the teaser showed (that she's dead).

is this being a new trend now. "dopplegangers?'
previously it was multiple personality.

the next one are vampires right? ^_^

Guys, Bride of the Century did it first... seriously awesome k-drama that everyone should check out! The official synopsis sounds bat-shit crazy, but I swear it's not! The best I can explain it without giving things away is: A tough country girl has to deal with a snobby chaebol fiance and a curse passed down generations as she poses as a chaebol's daugther that looks exactly like her but who has disappeared. Yang Jin-sung does an amazing job at playing both roles and Hong ki is perfect for the role as well.

The 5-minute long trailer though. It was released during the press conference and I love it.
It was so intense I really wanted to watch this drama now. It was nothing like School 2015 nor BoTC besides the doppelganger thingy.
Everything about it seems posh, elegant and thrillingly melodramatic ♥

Is this getting recapped? I've been wanting to start recapping a K-drama if only on Tumblr or something but I don't think it's worth the effort if a big site like this is covering a show already.
