Orange Marmalade: Episode 3

Let the cute commence! Our leads stop hiding their feelings and decide honesty is the best policy, though Ma-ri’s big secret is still one she holds close to the vest. They even make new friends as the band is finally formed, which does good things for Ma-ri’s confidence and Jae-min’s maturity. He’s not ready to forgive his mother yet, but for now at least, he decides to stop punishing himself just to get back at her. Baby steps.

EPISODE 3 RECAP

Ma-ri plays her guitar and thinks back on her interactions with Jae-min. She only just now realizes that the boy who helped her on the train, the boy who followed her to the station, and the boy who kissed her neck in front of her house were all the same person. “Every time… it was you.”

Shi-hoo is staying with Ma-ri’s family for the time being, and he finds the sheet music of her song and hums the sweet tune. He crumples the note from Jae-min about starting the school band, but then remembers Ma-ri saying she felt like she was changing for the better, and reluctantly puts it back.

Still thinking of Jae-min, Ma-ri worries about his sweet-smelling blood, which makes him a person that’s hard for a vampire to be near. She wonders why he has to have that blood, because it’s dangerous for her to like him.

Ma-ri rushes off to school in the morning and Shi-hoo follows her, but she warns him not to make it obvious at school that they live in the same house. Shi-hoo says he’s not there because he wants to be, but Ma-ri claps a hand over his mouth when he starts to say something about vampires sticking together.

Frustrated, Shi-hoo asks if Ma-ri isn’t tired of always worrying about what humans think, but she points out that he’s going too far in the other direction, doing interviews and giving away vampire secrets. He tells her that he’s blacklisted now, and been given a warning from VCS that the next time, his punishment will be severe.

Ma-ri says that this is the school she’ll be graduating from as she’s tired of transferring, but Shi-hoo is convinced it’s because of Jae-min. It’s obvious Jae-min likes her, and he doesn’t seem trustworthy. Ma-ri says that’s just another way of saying he’s good-looking, calling out Shi-hoo’s jealousy.

But Shi-hoo knows of Jae-min’s vampire prejudice and warns Ma-ri that he’ll turn his back on her once he learns the truth. He half-threatens to out her as a vampire just to see what Jae-min will do, and Ma-ri yells at him to shut up.

The tension is palpable at school that day, as everyone watches everyone else. Ma-ri avoids Jae-min’s eyes, but stares whenever he looks away. Ah-ra and Shi-hoo both take in the couple’s nonverbal interactions, looking distinctly unhappy.

Later Shi-hoo sits on the school roof, remembering the day he met Jae-min — the day Jae-min’s mother and Shi-hoo’s uncle were married. He seems to have been a sensitive boy, and played a bit with Jae-min on their guitars, trying to make a connection. Unaware that Shi-hoo was a vampire himself, Jae-min had told him a “scary” secret, that his mother had just married a vampire.

He’d gone on to say that vampires should all die, and set down his guitar and walked away from his music. Shi-hoo had called after him, but Jae-min just told him to keep the guitar or throw it away. Inside the guitar case, Shi-hoo had found a photo of Jae-min and his mother.

Jae-min plays basketball in the school gym while his bevy of female admirers chant from the stands. Shi-hoo enters and issues a silent challenge, and the two play an aggressive game that has very little to do with actual basketball.

Shi-hoo sneers that Jae-min can’t really be first in school academically, since his memory isn’t great (meaning, he doesn’t remember him). He does his best to rattle Jae-min’s cage, saying he and Ma-ri don’t look good together and that he’s too closed-minded to get along in the world. He’ll never be able to understand Ma-ri.

Confused and angry, Jae-min shoves Shi-hoo down and makes a basket, winning the game. Shi-hoo glares up at him, the loser for now.

Shi-hoo plays his guitar alone that night, trying to adapt Ma-ri’s song to get her attention. He mutters that it’s useless, liking a human, wishing Ma-ri understood that. Little brother Joseph silently takes his hand and leads him outside — happy for a distraction, Shi-hoo indulges him.

Later Jae-min wanders past Ma-ri’s house, and she runs outside on the phone with Shi-hoo, who’s lost little Joseph. She tells Jae-min that her brother is missing, and he grabs her phone to find a picture of the boy. He sends it to himself, then puts it out in a group text to their schoolmates, asking them to help find the missing child. That’s sweet.

Shi-hoo frantically looks for Joseph, and runs into Ma-ri’s parents who are also searching. He apologizes for losing their son, and Dad reminds him that young vampires, before they start talking, have no control over their instincts. Without adult vampire supervision, Joseph could bite a human. Oh dear.

Jae-min’s text mobilizes the students, and all his friends help look. Someone sees a kid alone at a nearby park, so Jae-min calls Ma-ri to tell her, and she rushes to find him. But Jae-min finds Joseph sitting on the slide first, and unaware of the danger, he says he’s noona’s friend and opens his arms to the child.

Joseph puts his arms around Jae-min’s neck, and goes right for the jugular. Thank goodness, Ma-ri gets there in time and snatches Joseph away, which confuses Jae-min. But she can’t explain that she’s terrified of what almost happened, and just runs away leaving Jae-min to wonder what he did to earn that look from her.

Ma-ri takes Joseph to a quiet bench and, still upset, fusses at him that he can’t bite people. But apparently vampire children develop slowly (since they live longer than humans, about 150 years according to Shi-hoo), so Joseph doesn’t understand why his noona is angry, and just bursts into tears. Awww, poor little peanut, he’s had a hard night.

Frustrated and scared, Ma-ri cries right along with him, and when their mom calls she tells her they found Joseph. Mom is worried by Ma-ri’s tone of voice, but Ma-ri can’t express why she’s so upset and just sobs. She and Joseph hug it out and cry together.

Everyone is talking about Ma-ri at school the next day, assuming that Jae-min helped her find her brother because he likes her. They’re not wrong, but Ma-ri is intensely uncomfortable at being the center of attention like this. She runs into Jae-min in the hall, but he’s still hurt by her behavior last night and avoids her.

In class, Ah-ra’s mean little posse talk loudly about how much they dislike Ma-ri, right in front of her. Ah-ra herself looks thoughtful, and changes the subject. Ma-ri’s seatmate Soo-in asks if she and Jae-min are dating, which Ma-ri denies. Soo-in blabbers on and on about it, until Ah-ra interrupts and says Teacher Han is looking for Ma-ri.

Ma-ri is pleased to hear that her teacher is a vampire too, and he pleasantly offers to share some synthetic blood with her. As they eat, he tells Ma-ri that he’s worried about Shi-hoo. He also gave up his music and started acting out, but his uncle thinks that if he gets back into music, it could re-open his heart.

Ma-ri says she barely knows Shi-hoo — he lived with them when they were children, but only for a couple of days. Han says that at that time, his parents were taken away by the VCS, and are receiving the same “Ahn-chi” punishment that Shi-hoo has been threatened with if he causes more trouble. Their punishment still has five years to go.

He tells Ma-ri that Ahn-chi is when the least amount of blood is provided to keep the vampire alive, which sounds horrific, though we don’t hear why they’re being punished. But the way Ma-ri’s face contorts, it looks like it’s probably the worst punishment a vampire can receive.

Ah-ra finds Ma-ri, and she’s being suspiciously nice — I don’t trust her one tiny bit. She says that her friends want Ma-ri to join their dance team, but Ma-ri has a different idea. She offers to join the school band with Ah-ra instead, and she actually smiles her first genuine smile. Ah-ra doesn’t look too thrilled at not getting her way, but whatever plan she’s cooking up depends on Ma-ri thinking she’s her friend.

Heh, afterward Ma-ri bonks herself on the head for being an idiot and falling for Ah-ra’s nice act even though she knows better. But she’s in whether she likes it or not, and heads over to the music room to find Jae-min in there alone.

His feelings are still hurt by the way Ma-ri looked at him after he helped find her brother, but today she thanks him sincerely. She apologizes for everything, all the way back to her behavior on the train, and he’s surprised to learn that she didn’t even know it was him. Aww, poor puppy, his little romantic bubble just burst.

He softens when Ma-ri says she’s mostly sorry that they’ll have to avoid each other, since everyone is talking about her now because of him. Being Mr. Popular, he wonders what’s so bad about that, and she points out that he wouldn’t know since he’s used to being good at everything. Ha, he’s simply gobsmacked when she says that not everyone is like him.

Ma-ri explains that she doesn’t like being the center of attention, and that she’s started to hate herself because of it. But adorably, Jae-min just says that now that she’s actually opening her mouth, Ma-ri turns out to be pretty good at talking. He says that words are great, but if she’s really thankful, she’ll listen to him play one song all the way through.

He plays her song on his guitar, which he’s turned from a bare tune into a gorgeous love song. Ma-ri’s face softens and she taps her fingers along with his playing, and she watches Jae-min with a new awareness. Outside the room, Shi-hoo listens in and hangs his head in defeat, knowing that Jae-min’s version of Ma-ri’s song is better than his.

Ma-ri does stay for the whole song, and Jae-min thanks her — he’s playing the guitar again because of her. He tells Ma-ri of his parents’ divorce and his father’s death two years ago, and that he lives alone. He says that his mother was a music teacher and taught him guitar, but no matter how much he loves it, he refused to do anything his mother wants.

Ma-ri agrees that he looks like someone who holds a grudge, which makes Jae-min laugh in agreement. But he says that flipping through her music book weakened his resolve, and he realizes that refusing to play music didn’t actually change anything. That’s refreshingly mature.

He admits that he’ll never understand his mother, but from now on he wants to do what makes himself happy. He asks what Ma-ri plans to do to start over, and asks her to join him. Ma-ri thinks to herself that she may eventually regret this moment, but she takes the guitar from Jae-min and starts to play.

And so, they get to work forming the band. Soo-in joins to play percussion, and Jae-min’s class-clown friend (whose name I still haven’t caught) is the drummer. Shi-hoo reluctantly agrees to play backup guitar, with Ah-ra on keyboard. They all practice a song that Ma-ri writes, and Jae-min only withdraws a little whenever Teacher Han checks in on them.

When the group stops for snacks, Shi-hoo watches Ma-ri incredulously as she eats a bit of kimbap to fit in. She thinks that she doesn’t want to avoid beginnings anymore just out of fear of the ending. She and Jae-min stay late to work on the sheet music, playing an adorable game of I’m-Not-Looking-At-You, while totally checking each other out.

Jae-min casually puts a package of cookies on the table and Ma-ri thinks how he makes her the most nervous, since his sweet-smelling blood is such a danger to her. Overwhelmed, she abruptly leaves the room, confusing poor Jae-min. He eats the cookies alone while Ma-ri peeks back into the room and smiles, vowing just this once to do what she wants.

The group draw a band name at random, and the name they pick is Orange Marmalade. Ma-ri admits it was her idea, and they create a cute logo that everyone loves. Jae-min and Ma-ri grow closer as they go from practice to an actual outdoor concert, which Jae-min’s mother and Shi-hoo’s uncle attend.

The band is pretty good! They have a ball making music together, though not everyone is as happy as Ma-ri and Jae-min. Shi-hoo and Ah-ra both watch the happy duo as they play, seeming discontented at how close the two are becoming.

After the concert Jae-min’s mom interviews the band, asking band leader Jae-min why they chose the name Orange Marmalade. He says that he’s the band leader but Ma-ri actually chose the name, and turns the mic over to her.

Shyly, Ma-ri says that when you eat oranges, you throw away the peels. But when you make orange marmalade, you include the peels in order to improve the taste and texture. To make something special, even the parts that you would usually trash are needed. Awww, I like that, that even the misfits are necessary. Everyone applauds at the explanation, though Ah-ra rolls her eyes.

After the concert, Teacher Han tells Ma-ri that he was impressed by the deep meaning to the band name. Especially since she’s never actually tasted marmalade, ha. Teacher Han acknowledges that it’s hard living with being different, and that getting caught by humans is scary.

Ma-ri says she never gets used to the feeling of being caught out, and Han even likens it to bungee jumping. You know you won’t die, but the fear is the same. He tells her it does get better, especially when you get lucky enough to love someone who also loves your secret.

Speaking of whom, Jae-min’s mom finds him alone and tries to talk with him, and he visibly stiffens. He addresses her formally as “Teacher” and refuses to talk about anything personal, but she ignores this and says it makes her happy to see him playing guitar again.

She tries to take his hand but he jerks away in disgust, says he doesn’t want his personal relationships revealed, and walks away from her. He goes for a walk but Teacher Han intercepts him, and cryptically asks if he’s heard of the “Wishing Lighthouse.” If you make a wish there, it will come true.

Ma-ri is currently climbing up to that lighthouse with her guitar. But she can’t think of a wish when she gets there, and guesses that it’s because she doesn’t believe in wishes.

We see Jae-min’s mom looking sadly over the water, and Teacher Han watches from a distance. Ma-ri had asked him if he ever loved anyone whose blood tasted sweet, and he’d answered yes, and that it’s still sweet to this day.

Ma-ri had told him of someone whose blood smells sweet to her that way, implying that she might be falling for him, and she thinks of Jae-min as she plays guitar at the lighthouse. Out loud she says, “I miss you, Jung Jae-min.” As if she conjured him, he steps out from behind the lighthouse and watches her play.

He gives her the sweetest smile when she notices him, and says that they say your wishes come true here. It must work, because his wish was that she would be here. Ma-ri stands to face him, and says that her wish just came true, too.

While she was sitting here, she’d thought that she missed him. She steps forward and gives him the lightest of kisses, and tells him that she’s not who he thinks she is. “But… I like you. I’m sorry.”

Still smiling, Jae-min says that if that’s the case, she should continue to be sorry as much as she wants. This time he moves into her and leans down, and Ma-ri thinks that at first she was nervous because every time she saw him, she couldn’t resist his sweet blood. But as they slowly kiss, she realizes — that’s love. She, a vampire, loves a human.

COMMENTS

Awww, what a sweet confession, on both of their parts. I’m happy that Jae-min and Ma-ri finally got on the same wavelength, because I would much prefer to see them fall in love sooner rather than later, and spend our time exploring the fallout when Jae-min learns that Ma-ri is the thing he hates most. I like that Ma-ri’s love for Jae-min is teaching her to be more confident and take risks, and I hope that falling for Ma-ri does the opposite for Jae-min. He could do with a dose of introspection and maturity, and learn to be more accepting of people who are different than he is. Or at least to realize that not everyone is like him.

It’s so cute, watching Jae-min learn that the world doesn’t revolve around him. His expression when Ma-ri said that not everyone wants to be popular and the center of attention, was just too cute. He’s so used to being good at everything and having people love him for it, he has no idea that some people may not want to be a focal point. He’s not really arrogant, at least not in a mean way, it’s just that he takes his popularity and talent for granted and honestly has no idea that someone might actually want to fly under the radar. In that sense, meeting and falling for Ma-ri is going to be very good for him. Seeing her slowly but surely topple him off his self-erected pedestal is going to be so fun.

As much as I love our main couple, though, I find myself drawn strongly to Shi-hoo as well. He has the saddest eyes, and I want to know what changed him from the sweet, caring boy at the wedding to this angry, reckless young man we know now. I’m certain it involves his parents and their punishment, and I’m dying of curiosity to find out what they did to earn it. I have a sick feeling that whatever it is, Shi-hoo blames himself. He’s so potentially self-destructive, I almost think he’s trying to get himself the same punishment his parents are currently enduring.

But what I appreciate about Shi-hoo, and also what breaks my heart, is his willingness to step back for Ma-ri’s happiness. He’s not always (or even usually) gracious about it — he’s very vocal that her attraction to a human is stupid and reckless. Not to mention pointless, since the moment Jae-min learns her secret, he’ll turn on her, and in that sense Shi-hoo is giving Ma-ri some very good advice. But he sees the positive changes in her, and puts her feelings before his own. Not that he isn’t prepared to fight for her, since he’s not shy about getting in Jae-min’s face and pushing his buttons where Ma-ri is concerned. He not even above threatening to tell Jae-min that Ma-ri is a vampire, just to try to force the issue and cause a rift between them. But in the end, the sensitive and caring boy that we saw at the wedding, the one who worried about the boy who was so lonely and upset, wins out. He’ll tamp down his own wants and feelings if it means Ma-ri will be happy, even if he knows it’s only temporary.

I really love the pacing of this show, which feels languid and relaxing while still delivering a lot of information. I learned a lot about vampires in this episode without even realizing it, because there’s no exposition fairy — the details just come out in natural conversation without feeling stilted. The writing really flows in that sense, and I love that I never feel, as a viewer, that I’m being spoken at or that a scene has to take a pause to teach me something. It all just happens naturally, which feels very real and allows the scenes to breathe. All in all, I really appreciate where this show is going and how it’s taking us there, and I hope it stays on this track all the way through. Do you hear me, Show, don’t change a thing! You might be strange and different, but we love you just the way you are. Sweet vampire blood and all.

Is it true that this series is only 12 episodes? I love this series so far, it is the best premier out of all the shows that came out this month...

On KBS World's official website, the episode count for "Orange Marmalade" is 12 as well. I actually hope that sticks; I like the drama too much to see it ruined by its trying to accommodate a higher episode count than is fitting for the story. Unfortunately, that happens way too often in dramaland (for a recent example, I'm looking at you, Hi! School - Love On).

Thanks so much LollyPip! I like your insights. I have to watch again to catch those expressions on Jae Min's face.

Random thoughts: Do schools not lock their stairs access to the roof??? There are several stories (from other shows) of students falling from roofs and here we have Shi Hoo sitting up there like he belongs there! That was the thought that bothered me! LOL! But he did look hot just sitting there and thinking/brooding.

Shi Hoo taunts Jae Min: Why? "Shi-hoo sneers that Jae-min can’t really be first in school academically, ... He does his best to rattle Jae-min’s cage, ...." Is getting Jae Min upset with him going to serve a purpose for Shi Hoo? Or is it just a guy thing where he wants to knock him off a pedestal?

I was actually very touched by Ma Ri's explanation for the band name... I even teared a little.

"To make something special, even the parts that you would usually trash are needed." Everyone whether we like them or not, should be accepted and it is only in unity with all kinds of people, even those who are different from ourselves, that true strength lies. :)

I'm really looking forward to the rest of this show. There is so much potential for growth all around, for development for both the leads and the side characters, for resolution in Jae Min's family as a microcosm of resolution for vampires and non-vampires in society. And I'm so happy that already we have the band in full swing (thank you show for delivery what you promised in the preview)...

Plus I'm even more happy that Ma Ri is mature enough to come to terms with how she feels and the conflict involved and is able to make a clear decision (and not be a dithering idiot). It's all going to be challenged by all kinds of events in the future any way, but at least she took the initiative, which I find wonderful.

Hearing Ma Ri say she is sorry to like him, that was the most romantic response from Jae Min "...then you should continue to be sorry as much as you want." *sighs!* :)

Now we await all the angst that's going to come to affect our young couple... idiocy (noble or otherwise) please stay away!

@GB

Hello again!
Though I find Jae-min/Ma-ri becoming a couple a bit fast, I must agree that Jae-min's response was so romantic. ^^

I don't think it's that fast. That segment with their band practicing together implied condensed time. I mean, they didn't just compose a song and prepare it for public performance in a couple of days; it must have taken at least a couple of weeks.
Also, I found both Mari and Jaemin's reasons for being drawn to each other believable. I can see why they like each other so much, so even if it happened relatively fast, it makes sense for them to become a couple sooner rather than later. It's first love, bold and impetuous, so why should they resist it? Jaemin has no reason to (that he knows of), and even though Mari is more conflicted, she's bound to give in too eventually, because her yearning for love is too deep.

@ Adnana
Yes, I too had placed the timeline to be more than just a couple of days and the speed of the romance seemed right to me. I wrote about it below... also the forming of the band etc... it was over time but had to be condensed so that we have 9 episodes to see other developments in.

I like what you say about her yearning for love... It's true that we need to bear in mind that she has been making herself to be as un-noticeable as possible, however it seems a struggle for her, which means she's probably a person who'd prefer to be open and sociable but does not dare to be (I note that she was very warm with the suspiciously nice Ah Ra). If she can be open and free and trust in someone she is attracted to, the flood gates of 'longing' or 'yearning' will be open and she will naturally just give in. So any betrayal / heartbreak for her will be terrible!!! Poor Ma Ri! :(

Hi GB,
Why does Shi Hoo taunt Jae Min? I think it's bcos he's upset that JM likes Ma Ri so much, and he knows that MR like JM too. It's his jealousy that's upsetting him. So he does whatever he can to provoke JM, and make JM look bad.
MR coming to terms w her feelings so fast and our OTP sharing a kiss on top of the lighthouse only means that all hell will break loose very soon. I can't say I look fwd to the pain that follows.
I do hope that the show stays good for us. There isn't anything else airing that I love.

Dear KDaddict?JCW
Thanks for your explanation which sounds quite typical of our 'teenagers' (actually of adult males too LOL!).

Yes, you are right... when the good stuff is past, the angst begins... and I'm preparing myself for the 'hard' times ahead.

I gave Ex-girlfriend Club another try after giving up at Ep 2. Ep 3-5 finally delivered on the funny. I was bursting out in laughter at all the lies, forced scenarios and especially the expressions on all the "liars'" faces. It also made the truth-telling especially difficult but more sincere and interestingly brings up a hidden love triangle... Anyway, if you haven't already, you may want to try this show although it's not being recapped here. :)

Hi GB,
I check out most shows when they come out. Lately, I don't seem to be able to get past ep 2 for most of them. To me, if I don't like the heroine's personality or char, and can't relate to her, I can't go on; then even the funny is not funny.
Tho I can't relate to a teenage vampire girl like Mari, I can sympathise with her fear of being found out, and her wish to find love, esp. her wish to be in Love w YJG!
Watching a lot more K Variety lately and quite enjoy them.

I know it's kind of late to respond to your random thoughts from 3 months ago, but you wondered about them locking the stairs access to the roof. And they obviously do "sometimes". Ma-Ri had accessed the roof the first day to eat her lunch, but Ma-Ri ended up in the band room the next time because the door was chained as I recall. What I thought when I saw your question in reference to Shi-hoo sitting on the roof was - "Uhm he's a vampire. Could you keep him off the roof if he wanted to be up there?" It seems like rooftops and brooding is a very vampire thing to do.

I kept thinking the last third of the episode was some kind of elaborate dream sequence because it was moving so fast, but it wasn't and now I'm just like, what just happened. Is it just me or did they speed through the entire webtoon in the space of ten minutes?? I sure hope they know where they're going with this.

I kind of feel like this is the flufferized, YA version of True Blood Season 1 (though it goes without saying it has nothing on it--it's easy to forget, but True Blood was a great show at one point). I do wish this show would embrace its inner campiness, though--there have been a couple mundane everyday scenarios turned into life-or-death moments, complete with operatic soundtrack, which were ripe for a more satirical take. Oh, well. Yeo Jin-goo is doing a great job, so it's all good (for now). Can't wait till his adult career takes off--I just wish he'd get the kind of opportunities YSH got at his age--it'd be so great to watch him do a Jung Ha-yeon drama...

My one complaint with this episode is that they sped through the band stuff. I feel like we could have spent some time on it, from the misfits coming together to Mari opening up to her making friends, etc etc. There's some good conflict we could have mined from that, and it all just got glossed over in a little montage. Plus, I wanted to see her growing closer to Jae-min. It just feels sudden to have her go from "Huh, they were the same guy" to "Thanks for these snacks I don't eat" to "I like you enough to risk you finding out I'm a vampire."

Other than that, I'm really enjoying this show. YJG is especially good, and I feel a strong noona crush coming on... (Jailbait! Jailbait! Bad Kender!)

What she said. I haven't read the webtoon, but I still felt that they sped through two of the best parts of this story. I'm disappointed because there were so many rich conflicts and satisfying resolutions that we just missed out on.

The process of a high-school band gradually coalescing is a wondrous thing (especially when the band is made up of romantic rivals and a mixture of misfits and popular kids), and I wanted to see that.

And I really wanted to witness JM and MR falling for one another gradually-- not in a montage! JM's already having wet dreams about MR, and then he discovers that she didn't even know who he was when she nibbled on his neck-- couldn't we have enjoyed his being adorably confused as to whether or not she likes him as they continued to play the I'm-Not-Looking-At-You game for a while longer? All the awkwardness, nervousness, confusion, heart-fluttering, obsessing, fantasizing, and swooning that comes with falling in love for the first time is delicious, and I wanted to savor it. It doesn't have to be dragged out, but I was hoping it would last for at least an episode or two more.

Hopefully, the story that the OM team wants to tell is equally satisfying-- I'll just have to create some mental fanfic to fill in the gaps.

I agree. The pacing was off in this episode. Montages are great at getting a lot if information across quickly, which is why they work so well in 90min movies. However, in a 12 episode drama, we could have expanded some of the moments in the montage. I felt that the time jump was too much! I needed a bit more back and forth with our leads. I understand wanting to get to certain parts of the story quickly, so they sped through this part, but they could have expanded it to two episodes. That's not asking too much is it?

Further, I am actually really surprised that the main couple is together already. Unusual in kdramas, or any show really. The couple being together is usually the reward at the end- they kiss, the end.

I have no idea why, but this is the first time I found Yeo Jin-gu boring in a drama! Please, I'm his fan too... But somehow, he's failed to impress me here!
I'm not one for noona romance, so probably that's another factor...
Or maybe, I've become allergic to Vampire stories after the debacle of 'Blood'.

...and I am allergic to school students in love triangles and such by now. They should move this to college setting. School students are too young for all of these.... after a while, it feels disturbing for me.

I get it, same theme can be so boring...vampire....school love stories... and now mix both. So I am just reading the recaps.

The only school drama which I am watching now is Who are you? because the story is compelling despite the setting but I hope that is my last school drama.

I am a noona fan of Yeo Jin-goo too but still I am not sold in.

Yes, enough of vampire dramas!

If the setting is college, i would probably find the conflicts a little hard to believe. The angst and the problems and self awareness etc in this drama seem monumental and precious because the characters are teenagers. If the characters are already in college, I would say grow a backbone and get over it already. stop mopping blablabla.

Yes I agree with @Nomad in that the comment on growing a backbone was to the characters and not to the commenter. :)

Yeo Jin-gu doesn't bore me at all. I find his acting (expressions and body language) captivating. I can look at him for long stretches. The other two young actors are fine. The vampire teacher/uncle is also fine. I'm not allergic to vampire stories. So why do I find this episode somewhat 'Blah'?

Maybe like many have pointed out, it's the pacing. Everything goes so smoothly for 60 mins., in the forming of the band and the coming together of our OTP. There is no tension, no highs and lows in a Whole ep. It's Sweet, but it isn't dramatic.

Guys! I think I'll be with @Kaybee on this one! I think I would've liked it if the setting was in a college with a more revamped plotline. The story feels boring having been dragged out. The pacing's pretty bad, and I have to agree with @KDaddict?JCW on this.
Having just passed out of School myself, this drama just doesn't feel THAT realistic to me (i know, with it being a vampire drama and all! but shouldnt there be at least a semblance of reality to it?!)
I decided to stop watching the drama after ep 2. But I think I'll continue catching up with the recaps because LollyPip is such a wonderful writer!

I loved the first two episodes, but actually found episode 3 a little boring - and confusing, because things seemed to just happen without much explanation.

What happened after Jae Min kissed Ma Ri's neck at the end of episode 2? Why is Shi Hoo suddenly living with Ma Ri's family? How did he 'lose' Joseph? How did the band form? Why are they only practicing the one song (that Ma Ri wrote?)? Why is she - for want of a better word - conducting them, if Jae Min is their band leader? What are they practicing for? Where did they go to sing their one song and why? How did Ma Ri go from barely knowing who Jae Min was to falling in love with him?

I feel as though I missed the episode(s) where everything was explained and now I'm... not lost, but not really sure why things are happening, which is a little frustrating.

Anyway. Thanks for the recap, LollyPip. :)

the first two episodes were lovely, and I was so eager to see the fallout from the neck-kiss ending of episode 2 and how everything would progress. episode 3 felt like one of those dreams where things aren't SO weird and off that you suspect it's a dream but still, nothing really makes much sense or flows in a logical way...you don't really notice that much when you're watching or "in it" but then it's over and you're like - wait, what?

I'm enjoying this drama so far and just recently finished reading the webtoon. It does look like this drama is not following the original storyline closely, but I'd say they're doing a great job in giving Shihoo more presence in the plot. I'm really intrigued by what happened to him and his parents when he was young to transform him from his kind and sensitive nature to the current rage and and cynicism.

Oops, got posted before I was done. XD

I was also drawn to Shihoo since he is able to put aside his own feelings when it comes to Mari. That was very sweet. In addition, he's the one who knows everything right now: his uncle married Jaemin's mom, why Jaemin is so strongly against vampires, why Jaemin might have given up on music, etc. So, when Jaemin eventually finds out, I hope he and Shihoo can be friends. I'm looking forward to Jaemin reconciling with his mom as well.

Good to see some character development for Mari and Jaemin. They both need to realize that they should change their current mindset--taking risks to let oneself be happy and to realize one's dreams, and to be open-minded about the relationship between humans and vampires. It seems the two are growing very close quite quickly, but as long as the plot continues at a steady pace, I'm okay with it. I really want to see how they influence and change each other.

Anyway, I hope Mari can find her own group of friends besides Jaemin and Shihoo. I love the meaning behind Orange Marmalade! I agree that the band part of the story seemed to be glossed over, so I hope there will be other kinds of conflicts for the characters to go through so that we can see everyone's growth. =)

I have to disagree with liking the pacing. I really liked the pacing of the first two episodes and then maybe the first third of this one but then to me it felt like everything was super sped up. That bad just suddenly all decided to agree to work together? Even our vamp boy because he heard it in the hall - no need to try and convince him or anything? Just join in with all those humans. And then yeah...I'm happy to have the confession happy early, especially in a short show but it felt like everything was starting to get condensed and not feeling as organic to me. Scenes started to feel a bit more like "telling" than feeling. It is a bit distancing for me and makes me not quite as involved. The previews (no spoilers) also make me a little concerned that this condensed pacing will continue.

I am still enjoying the characters though, and will continue watching. I'm just a bit frustrated.

i have to say that i found the pacing a bother .... like whoa whoa whoa what happened? every single damn thing in this episode lack an explanation , especially the BANDDD .... i don't want to compare this to the webtoon , but even not comparing , i still found that the making of the band ? what?! theres no recruitment or anything and suddenly BAM ! a band ..
and when they go on stage , there are no stories before that about why they could get selected and go on that stage , and the timelinee pls , show ?

and this is just ep 3 ( i know this is a 12-ep-drama ) but stillllllll the lovey dove start so fastest like WHATT , there are no development on the characters so on and so forth , and what about shi hoo? clearly a character with much depth but a failure to explain it from the writerrr erghhhh i was frustrated through the whole ep , and still frustated now ! .. and looking from the preview , it may not seem better onward , I mean ( for those of you who have seen the preview ) couldn't they make any better plot other than thatttttt?

sorry for my rant tho..... still enjoying the characters especially the boys and will continue to watch just to find out whats in store for us ..

Having watch all the episodes thus far, I can truly see myself really enjoying this drama. While the adorableness of Yeo Jin Goo caught my attention, the rest of the characters/story are engaging. But watching this teenage drama made me realize that there is a double standard when it comes to male and female child actors. Yeo Jin Goo has been allow quite a bit of room to move in the romance department (kissing, neck, nuzzling, fantasizing) with is older co-stars despite his age (and legal status) of 17. But his contemporaries in k-drama (Kim Soo Hyun & Kim You Jung) barely get to hold the hand of their character's romantic partner.

I have no problem with the pacing. For me it´s refreshing to see things moving faster, because people and especially teenagers actualy do things without much thinking. I´m usually pretty bored how adults act in dramas when it comes to kissing and skinship, waiting ages (in some cases it literally takes years) just to kiss. And the band doesn´t bother me at all either. They´re at school so isn´t it just a school project? You go to class, get an instrument and play with other guys who need credits. I don´t know but maybe the band isn´t really that important for the story so we don´t need to know every little detail about it. Or maybe it will be so we will see in other episodes.

Orange Marmalade is getting better and better. I don't mind the rush in events, I loved how they skipped the unnecessary explanations and all because we can still understand everything. I'm using my imagination here to fill in the blanks haha That's why it's okay with me to speed up the pace of the drama. There's only 1 episodes for this drama anyway. I think what's coming later is way more important and need better explanations and more airtime. I'm loving everything about this drama, like seriously. I really like Yeo Jingoo and Seolhyun in here but Jonghyun for me is stealing the show and my heart. Again, he's got the most interesting character and he's portraying it really well. I love his eyes the most, I can see all Sihoo's pain through them. I honestly think this Sihoo character is the highlight of the show. My heart hurts for him already because I am pretty sure his future is not bright but there's more pain and maybe evil to come. I have a feeling that he will turn into a heartless vampire and die miserably. The VCS, I'm so very curious about this body. Are they humans or vampires? What crime did Sihoo's parents commit to deserve such a cruel punishment? And just like you LollyPip, I'm wondering if the their crime has to do anything with Sihoo. Hmmmmm... Again, Sihoo, this character is super interesting! Thanks for the recap dear.

@ Sold

What you said, "I loved how they skipped the unnecessary explanations and all because we can still understand everything. I’m using my imagination here to fill in the blanks haha ... I think what’s coming later is way more important and need better explanations and more airtime."

I like the speed too and I was wondering to myself why the skipping of how things happened here does not bother me, whereas it bothered me that there were plot holes in TGWSS.

Somehow, like you say... we can still understand everything without having to be shown. I believe it also helps that I did not read the webtoon and did not know that there was a lot of time given to the band forming, etc... I had zero expectations.

I believe the scenario here is more commonplace and requires less exposition. It is quite natural that with a teacher promoting it and students already half interested in it (for various reasons) that a school band could form quickly.

With the time taken to practise etc, it must have been many days that the band spent together, so that Ma Ri and Jae Min had opportunities to see each other. We did have a scene or so where they had warmed up to each other... therefore again, their getting together as a couple seemed natural rather than rushed.

As for how Shi Hoo ends up at Ma Ri's place, (yes, plot hole but somehow more understandable than others I've come across) I do not find it strange that VCS finding Shi Hoo a loose cannon decides that he needs to be supervised. To ensure that he does go to school, they get the family with whom he stayed before as a child to take him in. I'm maybe more surprised that it's not his uncle who takes care of him...

I too think that with just 12 episodes, more time is needed for the resolutions to come, therefore the condensing of lots of "how things happened" seems to be needed.

But as mentioned among the comments here, the level of honesty and skinship is far better in this show than it is in shows of adult romances, and since it happens sooner, is quite refreshing too. :)

I only read the first 10 chapters of the manhwa and I thought it was a little bit boring. I didn't continue it and probably I won't. But I did read the characters' description and the summary somewhere. So just like you, I didn't have expectations for the drama. I heard that from episode 5 till episode 9, the story will take action in the Joseon dynasty then comes back to the present in the episodes 10, 11, 12. The drama is obviously not based wholly on the original material that's why I understand all the changes that happened and I'm willing to give the drama a chance. So far, the beginning of the drama is waaay better than the first chapters of the manhwa and got me hooked.
Wow, your question: "Why his uncle is not the one taking care of him?" Hmmmm... Wasn't Sihoo living alone as previously shown in episode 2? That light attack scene when his uncle came with the anti-light injection. So I concluded that his uncle WAS taking care of him but couldn't control him that's why the VCS sent him to another vampire family to watch over him. But WHY Mari's family? I'm almost sure that this question will be answered soon.

I feel the same way. Is this drama face-paced because it's only a few episodes, like 11 or 13? instead of the usual 16? There are dramas through that even if they are fast paced, the editing is good. Here, the cut on some scenes (e.g. Jaemin playing the guitar in the room) are too long whereas some scenes which deserved more emphasis are cut too short. The jump between scenes is also awful. For instance, I would have loved to see how Shi Hoo became part of the band.

Ditto. Similar thoughts crossed my mind when I was watching the episode. Why too long on some scenes, makes me wonder if I should take note on the music they are playing on the guitar like it gives some clue or something. But alas, I have not much sense in the musical part. For shorter series like this, perhaps they should refer to J-drama that are similarly short length (which reminds me of the J-drama "Pride" that has the K-vibe, fit into an 11-episode series). Hopefully future episodes would flow better cause I really want to love Orange Marmalade.

Thank you for the recap!

I agree with the other commentators who had trouble with the pacing of this episode. I don't want ten episodes of dithering should-we-or-shouldn't-we or noble idiots, but I would have liked to have seen more of the band coming together instead of just a musical montage. Something with Ma Ri and the pig tail girl becoming friends; Shi Hoo and Jae Min's uneasy relationship and how Jae Min feels about Shi Hoo being in the band after his jealousy earlier; Ah Ra desperately trying to keep up her sweet face in front of Jae Min while rolling her eyes at Ma Ri and while the drummer makes starry eyes at her. Not to mention how Ma Ri went from "who are you?" to "I like you" so quickly. I understand she wasn't going to let fear stop her anymore, but I would have still liked to have it teased out just a liiiittle more. Just... more, instead of glossing over everything.

Still going to tune in next week though, especially after that preview.

I liked episode 3, it was nice to see Mari and Jaemin finally bond =). Mari's explanation for the band name was really touching.

Regarding it moving fast, I think it has something to do with this statement I heard that episodes 1-4 happen in the present time, episodes 5-9 happen in the past, about 400 years ago, and episodes 10-12 happen 6 months in time after eps 1-4. I haven't read the webtoon so I have no idea if that fits somehow with how things pan out there.

Finally, been able to watch a drama at the same time as the recaps! Although school is continuing in full force right now, since this is once a week, I may be able to make some time for it.

Love the slice of life feeling. It feels mundane, but it holds my attention well. I love how smitten Jae Min is, and YJG plays it well. The other two leads are doing just fine. I was worried about Seolhyun and Lee Jong Hyun.

I know some are saying it's rushed, and I can understand the frustration when a beloved book becomes an adaptation that doesn't live up to expectation. But since I haven't read the webtoon, I find it to be flowing fine, despite episode 3 being a little fast. The story does need to proceed to the main conflict as soon as possible, considering there are only 12 episodes.

I love how the entire world has been recreated, with the existence of vampires being common knowledge, although they are persecuted and looked down upon in human society. Showing that vampires are just people too but with different "eating habits". It makes you wonder about the differences between people in our own world. We are all people, just with different cultures, skin colors, backgrounds, etc. Apart we are great too, but it is together, such as in orange marmalade, that we truly bring that tangy, wonderful flavor.

Anyways, just some random thoughts I wrote out as they came to me while typing. I better head off to study now.

Hi @Sky @GB

I too loved the explanation of the band's name. It's actually not a coincidence that I happen to love orange marmalade, you know, the food, LOL, and the drama's title alone had piqued my interest as in WHY is a drama named after my favorite sandwich spread while it's not even about food? Ma ri's explanation answered my question. It really fits the whole vampire-human coexisting thing. I haven't read the webtoon, but whoever came up with the title is a genius!

I have a sick feeling that whatever it is, Shi-hoo blames himself. He’s so potentially self-destructive, I almost think he’s trying to get himself the same punishment his parents are currently enduring.

That's an astute observation. I only saw his anger-- but if he's full of guilt too, that's gonna be heart-wrenching, isn't it? Ack, just like in Who Are You: School 2015, I so want both male leads to get a happy ending.

Hmmn... interesting theory. If he bit someone before he learned to talk, that means he's been sans parents for most of his life. He mentioned in the interview that vampires have had to give up using their special powers, so another possibility is that he used one of those (like super strength). Or maybe he did something that caused his parents to use a special power to save him. I dunno. It's just wild guessing at this point~ all I know is that I already want to console his bitter and wounded heart.

He has so much deep seated guilt, some self-hatred, and a lot of anger at the VCS. And who can blame him?

I am so in love with Shihoo :-) so glad to have discovered jonghyunnin this drama :-)

I'm utterly disappointed with this episode. Especialy because I loved episode 1&2. It was such an amazing setup, but now it feels like they skipped all of the good stuff. And by good stuff I mean the progress of relationship and romance build up. I enjoy kdramas so much because the give you all this fluttering hand touching, secret eye contact, misunderstandings and almost kisses. I feel like they stole all the shipping and giddy waiting from me. And not only this but the whole episode felt like a highlight summary of a movie or 4 actual drama episodes. Will give the next one a try but pretty sure I won't continue. I really wanted and expected the drama to be so much more because I really love all of the characters

I think they are rushing thru the feel-good romantic stuff to get to the meat of the drama, which is the angst and pain of 'loving outside your own kind'.

I haven't read the webtoon, but at this pt, it looks like it isn't a rom-com but sthg dark and melo.

Yeah me too...when Ma Ri close her nose cuz the smell of YJG's blood where too sweet for him, I reminded by the first time when Edward Cullen sitting across Bella in lab classroom..
And when Ma Ri questioned herself why did YJG's blood seems so sweet to her, the question that pop in my mind was "has he imprinted himself to her unbeknowst to her?"
LOL..

I like all the actors and the premise of the show but am the only one who feels like there is no chemistry between YJG and Seolhyun?

Innnteresting! That explains why this ep was so fast-paced. Fingers crossed that they do a good job integrating the time jumps.

TQ @sophia for the info.
Looking fwd to the two timelines. Hopefully the joseon era story will tell us a lot more about these 150 vampires that remain here today.

Time sure is fast. One moment I was watching young Yeo Jin-goo as a child actor in Moon Embracing the Sun, followed by Missing you and now he's all grown up.

It's amazing how he progresses as an actor. Though, I was a little bit shy (I have no idea why) when I see him does his kissing scene maybe because in my head he's still wrapped up as a kid? (I better get that out of my system soon). Ahaha.

Back to the episode, the pace was fast unlike in the manwha but since were talking about film, that's different. I like the part where they got together early in the series and not later since Jae min has a whole lot of dealings to do once he uncovered Mi-ra's secret.

Anyways, I'm loving it and can't wait for the next recap.

Thank you LollyPip!!

Aww, finally I see plenty of smiling Jae Min :-D Love YJG's wide smile!
Shi hoo is such an interesting character. LJH is very lucky to be cast as him, and he'd shown much improvement in the acting department, I love him as Shi hoo. Too bad he's not going to get the girl, although I'm still in denial now (Ma ri-Shi hoo is just too cute).

I'm happy to say that I'm still loving OM, fast pacing and all. Especially after knowing that the 12 episodes are split into 3 parts: present, past (Joseon era), and future. I'm already buckled up for the turbo ride! I'm sure this is going to be a "different" experience, but I hope different means good and not the other way around!

I'm wondering, though, how will the human Jae min fit into the Joseon era? Are they going to take the doppelganger route?

Oh, and great recap as always, LollyPip! So glad you're covering this. You must be soo exhausted, finishing TGWSS, and immediately starting OM (or was it simultaenously?). Thanks for your hard work! :-)

Joseph almost feeding on Jae Min with "Children of the Corn" music playing in the background almost gave me a heart attack. But as soon as Joseph started crying, I cried along with him, then even harder when Mari started crying. Must have been so hard to witness another vampire unable to control his desires. She's afraid the same thing would happen to her. I am so glad she apologized and thanked him because he deserved to be offended by her reaction.

Wow, this drama moves fast. Their kiss was super sweet. Good for her for confessing and kissing him first. His cookies gesture was sweet as well, but too bad she doesn't eat cookies. I love this OST and SeolHyun's voice. I'm surprised there isn't more conflict between the band -- first between Shi Hoo and Jae Min and second between Ah Ra and Mari. I appreciate your recap, LollyPip!

"After the concert Jae-min’s mom interviews the band, asking band leader Jae-min why they chose the name Orange Marmalade"

Since Ma-ri sings and wrote the music, why is Jae-min the band leader?

Thus far, pretty decent, if a bit formulaic (esp. the jealous counterparts).

Also, I think we got it after a certain point that Jae-min really, really, really likes Ma-ri (enough w/ them staring at each other and then their jealous counterparts seeing them staring at each other and getting more jealous).

Agree that the pacing is off - since we go from the agonizing looks to a relationship that seems to be on speed.

some people are saying episode 3 is boring..
no matter how interesting a drama is . every episode in it can.t be interesting.. but to me from episode 1 to 3 they are not boring.. but the first kiss happens too fast.. is it because it only having 12 episode? well whatever. they should bring the romance coming.
besides I don't like how ma ri is treating shi hoo ..
she.s just treating him anyhow....

I think Yeo Jin-goo and Lee Jong-hyun are doing well in their roles. They can portray their role very well. They are different in the way they love Ma-ri. I just hope our main leads' emotional scars can be healed on this journey.

Agree. I can't wait for the recap for episode 3 to come out. In so confused with that episode though....maybe I'm missing out on a few vital details (like always) that I need to see the recap for it to make sense. I hope I'm not the only one confused though haha

Now I understand why they're casting two of the best guitar playing idols in this drama.. I love Seolhyun when she is with AOA band ( I forgot what the sub unit name) and JongHyun will always be my favorite member in CN Blue..
Btw is it just me or that orange marmalade explanation in eps. 2 reminded you to chajumma when he makes orange marmalade in three meals a day fishing village..
And about that triple time setting, how would they wrapped the last batch to 6 month before present..will that mean there'll be no YJG cuz they hadn't known each other back then or even if they've encounters each other they surely have many bones to pick..

The latest (4th) episode was a big what an actual f@!k. I understand that it's an adaptation, and that they can deviate as far from the webtoon as they want ... but the friendships in the webtoon are so much sweeter than trying to establish that their "fates" go waaaaaaaaaaaay back. We don't need whiplash-inducing time jumps. We just want to see cuteness. And sweetness. Lots of it.

I know right, when I watched I was so confused until I saw Sofia's explanations above on how they're dividing the drama into 3 parts. That made a lot of more sense so I'm definitely looking forward to Joseon era.

Anyone had any idea what is the song that Seolhyun sings for orange marmalade(the band) in ep 3, before she explain the meaning of their band name.

I'm also trying to find the location, and while digging online I found this:Cape Reinga Lighthouse in New Zealand. Do you think this could be it? Although it's a bit far from South Korea.
