Orange Marmalade: Episode 1

I have a good feeling about this one, guys. Orange Marmalade’s premiere episode strikes a balance that seems note-perfect so far, setting up a world that’s sweet and normal on the surface, but conflicted and troubled underneath. This premiere is all about establishing the dramaverse and the characters, and only gives hints at what’s to come in terms of the actual storyline, which can often be a weakness in a first episode. But in this case, it just makes me eager to see more, and in that sense I’m calling this a strong, solid start.

EPISODE 1 RECAP

A tiny girl follows her classmates, begging to be a part of their group, but they only stare at her with hostility.

A teenage girl sleeps on the train — the young girl and her classmates are only in her dream. She mutters, “Don’t do it,” in her sleep, as the man next to her fondles the bare knee of the young woman on his other side. In the dream, the little girl cries, “I’m not! I’m not a monster!” as her classmates crowd her in, and they scream at her to leave.

STOP IT!” The teen girl, student BAEK MA-RI (Seolhyun) wakes herself up with her own exclamation, startling the fondling pervert. The other passengers stare at the man, assuming he was doing something to Ma-ri. Among them is another student wearing the same school uniform, high school student JUNG JAE-MIN (Yeo Jin-gu), watching the scene intently. The pervert loudly insists he wasn’t doing anything to her and gets up to distance himself, but the woman he actually was fondling yells that it was her he was molesting.

The man stumbles when she pushes him, dropping a small milk carton which goes unnoticed. Cell phones come out and the entire scene is recorded, but Ma-ri ignores the commotion to reach towards the milk carton. Someone accidentally steps on it, and it bursts in an explosion of red droplets — it’s not milk, it’s blood.

The train car goes wild, as people realize the blood belonged to the pervert, and they crowd him. He snarls at them, his eyes glowing purple for a moment. A vampire. With her face covered in blood, Ma-ri sits in shock, until a voice asks if they go to the same school. She barely registers Jae-min’s attempts to speak to her, as all she can process is the sweet smell of blood.

Jae-min crouches down to make eye contact, but Ma-ri focuses on his neck: “This blood. I want to eat it.” She leans in, her mouth slowly widening, and just before she makes contact the train stops at the next station. She snaps out of it and runs, leaving Jae-min to call weakly that it’s the wrong station, and she’ll be late to school.

Ma-ri cleans up in the restroom, but she’s distracted again by a drop of blood on her lip. She laps it up with her tongue as her own eyes glow purple, betraying herself as a vampire, too. She reminds herself that she’s not a monster, and vows when she gets to school that here, she will not be discovered and chased out.

Jae-min does go to the same school, and he’s standing at the front of the class solving a math problem as the new girl, Ma-ri, is escorted into his classroom. His world goes slow-motion for a moment, and he betrays a small smile as he mutters that he knew she’d be late.

Ma-ri’s seatmate introduces herself as Soo-ri, but a cry of “It’s a vampire!” draws Ma-ri’s attention. It’s only another classmate who’s found the videos of the morning’s train events posted online, and she’s talking about the pervert. They recognize Ma-ri from the video, and suddenly she’s the center of attention — exactly what she didn’t want.

The entire class surrounds her, except for Jae-min who stays stone-faced in his seat. The students probe for details about the vampire, morbidly curious, and Ma-ri keeps a placid expression as she thinks to herself Stop it, stop it! To deflect them, she pulls out her crucifix necklace and says the vampire on the train probably didn’t hurt her because of it. She hates lying like this, but her new classmates are mollified and assume she’s just like them.

Jae-min finds a book about vampires in the library, and we learn a bit about the history of vampires and humans. Vampires have been in the world a long time — nobody knows how long, and nobody knows how they began. They live off of human blood, yet are not human themselves. The world at large learned of their existence in the 17th century, and there were vampire hunts for generations until, just before they went extinct, the vampire clans and Joseon royalty made a peace treaty.

Jae-min slams the book shut and his face grows hard. He murmurs that things would have been better if vampires had gone extinct.

Back in class the students are discussing the peace treaty, asking what guarantees that they won’t be harmed. Their teacher HAN YOON-JAE (Song Jong-ho) explains that in the treaty, the vampires’ lives were spared in return for a promise not to drink human blood. His explanation is very simple and concise, but there’s someone who strongly disagrees with him.

In a dark room, an interview is being held, and a man scoffs at that so-called “peaceful coexistence.” This is HAN SHI-HOO (Lee Jong-hyun), also a vampire, and he feels as if the treaty is anything but peaceful. He asks the PD what he would do if he someday had a neighbor who was a vampire. Of course the vampire would have to be reported, and would be run out of the neighborhood. This is not any kind of peaceful coexistence, in Shi-hoo’s eyes.

Back in the classroom, the students ask what would happen if a vampire did drink human blood instead of the synthetic blood they survive on. They ask why the vampires can’t just be gotten rid of, since there aren’t many of them anyway, but Teacher Han says that vampires are really just people with different eating habits. Every living thing has a right to live.

Shi-hoo seems more than a little unhinged, as he expounds on the unfairness of living as a vampire. Humans don’t know how to coexist — that’s why other species are going extinct on the planet. He says that to humans, vampires are nothing more than another inconvenient animal to be pushed out of their territory.

He pulls a knife and slashes his own hand, showing the PD how it heals nearly instantly. Proof that vampires are not human, but are actually superior to humans. They lost most of their powers when they stopped drinking human blood — what did humans sacrifice for this “peaceful coexistence?”

Jae-min is conspicuously quiet during the classroom discussion, until his seatmate pretends to be a vampire and bite his neck, and he explodes. Teacher Han says that vampires do have special qualities, but they don’t show them to humans, and they also have human rights. Jae-min asks if “human rights” aren’t something only humans should have. “Vampires… aren’t human.” At the back of the room, Ma-ri takes this in.

The students are still talking about vampires at lunch, particularly noting that vampires don’t like garlic. Ma-ri takes an extra helping of garlic cloves, and sits alone stuffing clove after clove into her mouth. Jae-min walks through the cafeteria and stops to watch her for a moment, sitting alone eating garlic, but his friend pulls him along.

Later Ma-ri rushes to the restroom to throw up, pale and sick from all the garlic. She sits in the stall, breathing and repeating to herself, “It’s okay. It’s okay.”

A man sits at home, watching soccer and filling packets labeled “tomato juice” with synthetic blood. He pretends to drink a beer and eat fried chicken, enjoying the semblance of normalcy if not the reality. When he hears his wife coming home, he rushes to hide the evidence of food and they celebrate her landing a new job.

Of course, she smells the chicken right away, and he’s busted. She fusses at him for spending money on food he can’t eat and “playing human,” and warns him sternly (but with obvious love) not to even think about playing soccer.

He remembers a recent time when he did just that, and kicked the ball so hard that it bent the goal frame. HAHAHAwhoops. It had outed him and his family as vampires, and they’d had to move. His wife begs him to just pretend to be human until Ma-ri graduates. Ah, so these are Ma-ri’s parents. She has an adorable little brother too, Joseph, and Dad clearly dotes on him. The three sit down to a nice family lunch of synthetic blood, wondering how Ma-ri’s first day at school is going.

She’s currently on the roof of the school, drinking her real lunch of synthetic blood (from a tomato juice packet, of course) and composing music. She’s obviously talented, as she composes right out of her head without even an instrument. She thinks that she only needs to push through two years and graduate, and gives herself a pep-talk: “Ma-ri, you can do well.”

Down below, Jae-min sees Ma-ri on the roof, and stands staring at the pretty. He stares for quite a long time, in fact, no doubt wondering what it is about this girl that’s so compelling.

Back at her home, her parents talk about how hard it is to be persecuted, and now another vampire (the one on the train) has drawn attention to them and making their lives dangerous. Mom is scared but Dad is pragmatic, saying the VCS (Vampire Control System) will most probably issue the staking penalty. They seem so normal, so human, as they worry about their children’s futures.

Out in the streets, the talk is all about the vampire on the train, who has indeed been sentencing to staking for using his powers in public (I assume he used some power of hypnosis-type-thing to keep her quiet while he fondled her, but it’s unclear at this point.) Shi-hoo also listens to the news, and practically shakes in anger.

Jae-min is approached by a female classmate, JO AH-RA (Gil Eun-hye) who has tickets for a sold-out musical. She says that she heard he used to be in a band, and that this show is one that musicians tend to love. Jae-min gently declines, saying that he wants to see it but he gave up music, and if he goes, he may want to play again.

Ma-ri walks past and the world goes slo-mo again, and poor Ah-ra is left in the dust when Jae-min follows the new girl. He does say sweetly before he goes, that Ah-ra is super-popular and that any other guy would stand in line to go with her, but Ah-ra obviously has eyes only for Jae-min. Who can blame her?

Jae-min runs all the way to the station, getting there in time to catch the same train as Ma-ri. He stands behind her, adorably nervous, and just before he gets up the nerve to say something she steps onto the train. He watches from a small distance as she nods off in her seat again, and when the man beside her gets up, he takes the guy’s place. OMG, Jae-min’s happy-nervous face just to be sitting near her is too cute.

Ma-ri catches the sweet scent of Jae-min’s blood in her sleep and dreams of cherry blossoms, as in reality, she leans towards his exposed neck. Jae-min stiffens as she moves closer and closer, until she touches his neck gently with her lips. Ma-ri actually nuzzles Jae-min’s neck for long minutes, as the poor boy sits stock still with worried eyes, trying to decide whether to melt or explode.

Hilariously, the elders sitting across from them tsk at their very intimate public skinship, and when a grandfather gets up in disgust and jostles Ma-ri, she wakes up — to find herself pretty much sucking Jae-min’s neck right there on the train. Not that he’s objecting. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Ma-ri quickly exits the car at the station, leaving Jae-min to dissolve into a puddle. He snaps out of it enough to notice that she dropped her music notebook as she left, the same one she was composing in earlier. When he gets home, Jae-min takes a moment to read the music and is obviously impressed with what he sees.

He’s so impressed, in fact, that even though he just said to Ah-ra that he wasn’t interested in music anymore, he pulls out his old guitar. There’s a letter wedged under the strings from his mother, wishing him a happy 14th birthday, which he re-reads with a conflicted expression.

Ma-ri is thinking of Jae-min too, wondering how his blood could smell so sweet. She re-composes the song she was working on earlier, and both Ma-ri and Jae-min play the song, separate but together.

The next day, Jae-min seems reluctant to return Ma-ri’s notebook. He forgets himself and stares at her during class, which Ah-ra clocks unhappily. The teacher calls on Jae-min as class president, and he’s so discombobulated that he accidentally calls for the end of class, five minutes into the lesson. PFFT.

After class, a trio of fangirls wait for Jae-min with gifts, but he’s in a hurry to catch up to Ma-ri. He’s obviously quite popular with the girls (again, who can blame them?) and he’s sweet but firm with his rejection. He’s so cute and excited as he runs to find Ma-ri, but when he does, the first thing he does is demand an apology. Oh you adorable thing, that’s not how you get a girl to like you.

Poor sweet boy, his face just crumples when Ma-ri has no idea who he is, HAHA. He wonders to himself how she could be so oblivious to the fact that she changed his entire world in an instant when her lips touched him. In that moment the world slipped away, and all he felt was his own breathing. “That… was you.”

When Jae-min steps closer, Ma-ri suddenly pinches her nose shut against the scent of his sweet blood. But he hilariously thinks she’s accusing him of stinking, and he looks like he’s going to cry when she tells him to shower more.

Jae-min tries to start this conversation over and demand his apology again, offended when she has no idea what he’s talking about. He announces his name to her like she’s supposed to fall at his feet, adorably befuddled when she’s just all, “Yeah, and?” Oh boy, his long hard fall is going to be fun to watch.

Jae-min settles for an IOU on that apology, telling her to remember it herself if she wants to know why. He promises to follow her around until she remembers on her own and apologizes. Is this his way of pulling her pigtails? Because it’s precious, and I want him to do it forever.

He at least makes an effort, and asks if she listens to her mp3 player all the time because she likes music, but she says no — it’s to keep other sound out. He knows she’s lying, and pushes the issue, presenting her with her own music notebook. They tussle a bit before he lets her have it back, and neither of them notices that Ah-ra has followed Jae-min here and has seen them together.

Teacher Han meets with a woman at a bus station and shows her pictures of Jae-min at school. She says sadly that their son is handsome — this is Jae-min’s mother (Lee Il-hwa), and Teacher Han is actually his stepfather. Her bus is called, and she gives Teacher Han a guitar (interestingly, adorned with a big ribbon, just like the old one he had at home) to give to Jae-min. For some reason, her son refuses to see her.

Mom expresses her sadness that Jae-min gave up on music because of her, hating her and by extension, his talent. Teacher Han gives her a hug, looking a little lost as to what to do, though he says he’ll try to convince Jae-min to see her.

Jae-min is obsessed with the idea that he might actually stink, and takes a very long, very adorably broody shower. He talks to himself in the mirror, full-body cringing that Ma-ri didn’t even know who he was, which is just so damn cute. He wonders how she could see his handsome face and forget it so easily. I dunno kiddo, I’m as mystified as you are.

Ma-ri takes a walk with her guitar, and we see the end of her conversation with Jae-min on the train platform. He’d told her he liked her song, and asked if her dream was to be a composer. Ma-ri had told him that she doesn’t have such things as dreams.

Teacher Han calls Jae-min to meet him at a cafe, and Jae-min looks none too pleased to be there. (Also of note, their waitress is Ma-ri’s mother.) Jae-min says that he only came to refuse Teacher Han’s suggestion to start a school band, and he tells Teacher Han to stop texting him like some stalker.

Teacher Han tries to be friendly, but Jae-min is having none of it and tells him to knock it off. He looks pained when Teacher Han asks him one more time to be a part of a school band, saying that he heard Jae-min was practically a legend when he used to play.

Han pushes too hard, and Jae-min explodes that his dream is none of Han’s business. He puts him firmly in his place as his mother’s husband, and not his new dad. Teacher Han admirably doesn’t get upset, and just says that he only thinks it’s sad that Jae-min is throwing away his dream so easily.

Jae-min only repeats that Han has no right to say such a thing, telling him not to act like they know each other at school. He even goes so far as to suggest that Han transfers schools. Wow, this kid is really angry about something.

Teacher Han isn’t ready to give up, and gives Jae-min the new guitar from his mother. Jae-min does accept it, but says he’s only doing it so that he can throw it away. He slings the guitar over his shoulder and moves to leave, but the first notes of a song stop him dead in his tracks.

Its Ma-ri, singing the song that she wrote — her mother must have gotten her the gig. Jae-min is transfixed by the beauty of her voice and can only stand and stare, and he thinks to himself again about that moment when time froze. “That…was you.”

COMMENTS

It’s been a while since I saw a first episode that gave me actual tingly shivers, in terms of feeling like this one is going to be special. But Orange Marmalade has me all tingly, and I’m loving every minute of it. This first episode was very strong, though it mostly focused on setup and character introductions and very little on plot. I still don’t have much of an idea of what the story will be, other than that vampires and people don’t get along and it’s probably going to come to a head at some point, but I almost don’t even care what direction the show plans to go with that. The setup was so good, that I’m pretty much down for wherever the show wants to take us.

I’m especially impressed with how easily the show flows from one mood and subject to the next, but I never feel jarred or like a scene is out of place. The transitions from cute high school problems to larger social issues, and back again, are smooth and natural and neither takes away from the other, or makes either one feel trivial or fake. It feels very real, in fact, the way the universe we’re being introduced to seems so calm and respectable on the surface, yet below the surface roils a hotbed of unrest and social exclusion that seems to be several centuries in the making. And yet the whole show has a dreamy, almost sleepy quality that reminds me that we’re not in the same universe that we live in now, and that things are very much different here. It’s a constant reminder not to get too complacent in thinking that we can predict what may happen, because this isn’t reality, and anything goes. I can see this going very dark very easily, but the lighter moments are so sweet and cute that I hope it keeps up that balance between the two as we go forward.

The characters are fascinating and endearing, and even after one episode I find myself loving them and worrying about them all at once. The show seems to be setting up our two male leads as representatives of each side of the human-vampire conflict, with Jae-min being the human who just wants the vampires gone, and Shi-hoo as the vampire who only wants to be accepted as an equal and not an animal. Jae-min seems to have a lot of anger below that popular-boy exterior, and whatever it is that he’s so tortured about, he blames squarely on the vampires. And even though Shi-hoo as a character was only barely touched-upon, he made a very strong impression. He’s clearly had about all he can stand of the injustice, and the way that humans pretend to be accepting of vampires while at the same time vilifying and “othering” them. Honestly, he seems on the verge of a major breakdown.

And then there’s Ma-ri, who only wants to live her life and be left alone, even if that means imposing a strict policy of self-isolation to keep people at bay. It clearly doesn’t make her happy, but at least she hopes will make her safe. I ache for her, because she only wants to be accepted — but if she can’t have acceptance, she’ll settle for indifference. That’s a lonely way to live, but I love the contrast between her willingness to be alone, and Jae-min’s self-assurance that all he has to do is give her his attention and she’ll fall at his feet. The boy’s picked the exact wrong girl for that, and I’m looking forward to his education in Introduction to Humble 101.

There’s not a whole lot left to say about the show at this early point, since as I said, this first episode was mostly setup. But I have a very strong feeling that that’s only temporary, and that there will be lots to say as we get into the meaty subjects of social equality and acceptance, so for now I’ll just say this: I’m one-hundred-percent ready to ride this train to the end. Who wants to sit next to me? I promise not to bite your neck!

I think Seolhyun did a pretty good job playing that character, it must be difficult playing that detached and alone girl while showing Mari's personality, and stuff like that XD

Yeah, part of my concern going into this is that Mari is a hard character to play and Seolhyun did a respectable, if not amazing job. I'm pretty satisfied with her so far.

@ 4drama, @ HS, @ Chandler

Yes, I see differing opinions on Seolhyun's acting, but I actually feel that she did pretty good. It was quite natural and as her character is keeping a low profiel and she's keeping so much in, her stoic, controlled 'expressionlessness' is to be expected. But I did not think she was expressionless... there were nuances to the look in her eyes.

After several episodes with all kinds of things thrown at her, if she still retains the same expression throughout, then only we can judge LOL!

After watching the 1st ep, I thought she was about as interesting as a dead fish. But my opinion changed some after watching the 2nd ep. Then I rewatched, and found that she has grown on me.

I think the jury might be still out on her acting. It's early yet. I'm very willing to give her a chance.

This was such a strong opening episode and I was sucked in to their world immediately. I can't wait to see this week's episode. One a week just isn't enough!

Okay, that's weird. I watched three new shows these days:
- Producer, with a star writer and a star lineup
- Warm and Cozy, again, star writers and aspiring lineup
- Orange Marmalade, an idol drama about teenage vampire romance (in 2015!!) with a child actor and a useless idol in the lead roles, based on a low-brow webtoon

And Orange Marmalade had, by far, the strongest first episode. How is that even possible?

Omg yes same here, continuing from that list I also checked out my ex-girlfriend club and by far Orange Mamalade was the only decent one. (SAD cause I was really looking forward to the others and not Orange Mamalade but that was an unexpected solid 1st ep)

Side note: Song Jong-ho and Lee Ilhwa played convincing couple considering they were "mother-son" in Reply 1997 LOL. (Love Song Jong-ho in everything and Reply Mama looks young here)

And I agree they make a really pretty couple here, though I really want to know why they are living apart from each other now and why her son is so bitter and mad against him.

You'll know the reason for the bitterness mostly in the next episode.

I honestly don't see them as a couple. They look completely different age-wise to me. I was actually confused about their relationship at first because it didn't seem likely to me. Minor issue though.

I think..., maybe..., Teacher Han is a Vampire so he look younger than the mother. And that will be good reason why Jaemin hate vampire very much too.
Maybe this stepfather break his real family apart by married his mother?

omg I never knew its the mum from Reply 1997 she looked so young XD.

Ex-GFC gets good in Ep3 once the convoluted setup is complete. It's pretty over the top, almost cartoonish comedy and not trying to be anything else. If you like whacky, I'd suggest giving ep 3 or 4 a shot-- there are long previously ons to get you up to speed.

Yeap. Orange Marmalade is surprisingly good, even if its just a set-up on the first episode for the vampire world and the character introductions. I had super high hopes with the star studded Producer but im bored as hell as I watched the drama.

I liked Producers, but I agree. I think Orange Marmalade's really strong opening is because: 1) the setting fits the classic kdrama mold really really well and it's a breezy summery high school drama to boot 2) the worldbuilding and setup has already been established in the webtoon, all they needed to do was adapt it well and 3) tbh, I didn't have as high expectations for OM as I did for, say, Producers or Warm and Cozy, precisely because of its idol cast.

FYI, from I read on soompi.com Producer had a change of director from episode 3 so you (and me!) can expect more normal and enjoyable show since the previous director is really a green one (forgot the name) and the recent is the one who direct Hogu's

Ya know, it's actually not that surprising to me.

Orange Marmalade is based on a webtoon with great characters and a premise that seems overdone, but that, in execution, is far more interesting and actually digs a lot deeper than typical teenage vampire romances do. It was based on a pretty well-written story with a fleshed-out world. Still, it's impressive that they did such justice to it!

this teenager drama vibe is moreeeeee 'human' than the 2 others.. i dunno how to describe it, but even the lead female actress didnt really work for me, but the storyline overall was good enough to make me stay and feel curious, while warm and cozy was warm but not that cozy, hehe.. producer.. emm.. below my expectation.. in fact, i already put my expectation lower for producer even with so many stars on it.. but i should put it lowest! sigh..

im glad lollypip recapping this one.. thank you!

Agreed Orange Marmalade had the strongest opening episode of all three dramas you mentioned. I quite liked Producer and Warm and Cozy but their impact on the viewer is much weaker than this drama. It may be because OM has only 12 episodes and each episode has to compact the story hence the stronger impact vs. other dramas with a larger number of episodes.

I watched the 1st ep and wasn't quite sure what to make of it, or the lead actress. Then I watched the 2nd ep, and fell in love with the show.
Yeo Jin Goo's gaze is not something to take lightly. Sigh......
Lee Jong Hyun is perfectly cast as the young vampire.
I'm not a kpop fan so I haven't heard of Seol Hyun, but after 2 eps, I find her performance quite soulful, for lack of a better word.

Of the 3 new shows, W&C, Producer and OM, I like OM the most, by far. I think that's MOSTLY but not entirely due to Yeo Jin Goo.

How can a 17 year old have that broad a shoulder? Have you seen that shower scene? Er-hem! Seriously tho, his acting puts many old hands to shame.

I'm pretty sure that W&C and Producer will find their range eventually, but, as I wrote above, just by the pilot episodes, I have to agree.

Though I don't think it's the actor, to me it's mostly that the writer had a very clear concept what the pilot was supposed to achieve and how to achieve it: efficient introduction of the characters and the setting.

About Kim Seol-hyun, I think I've only seen her in "Seo-young" and "Fool Watch", and she was pretty useless there. Well, her introduction in "Seo-young" was hilarious, of course, and she did a very good job in copying Lee Bo-young's style of "early Seo-young" early on.

This is a case of just having too high of an expectation with the other two dramas. There was nothing really bad about them. They both had pretty solid first episodes. I had zero expectations with Heart to Heart when I watched it because I was not a fan of the leads (huge fan of the director and writer though) but it has become my favorite drama of 2015 so far. I might check out OM even though I am not a fan of the cast nor the whole vampire genre but it looks like it might surprise me.

Kdaddict, it's great to see you here :) and I'm absolutely lovvving this drama so much. I started it only for yeo jin go, but found his staring and gazing at her makes my heart melt lol.

It looks like the vampire boy will also play his part very well, I was mesmerized by him even though I've never heard of him before.

I also loveddd that scene of secret garden parody, when he was imagining her lol. Such an adorable show.

Has anyone started reading the webtoon that this is based upon? It looks so cute :)

Im also enjoying School 2015: Who are you. Its very enjoyable and it might make the wait for orange marmalade a bit more easier.

I just realized that there are so many of us here, who came back from the dead to watch this :P

O read other post write their opinion abt this drama and mostly they found orange marmalade boring.. but bcoz i already watched it.. so i disagree.. and here you are @lollyPip point out opinion.. which is same as me!
For me it's a good drama.. i really like all kind of vampire story.. from vampire diaries to true blood to twilight and so On.. and what special abt this drama is the characters mostly are teenagers... so its different than others vampire story.. so can't wait for another episode and really hope the expand the episode from 12 to 16.. and yeo jin goo.. who can deny his acting talent? He is very manly! Noona falls in love with you jin goo yah.. hahah
and for seolhyun... for me i like her..since ugly alert.. she cam act! As for Lee jong hyun i think his acting much better compare to his debut drama gentleman dignity..~

Re: Seolhyun

Same here. I liked her in Ugly Alert, too. And so far she hasn't disappointed in Orange Marmalade.

Speaking as a person who avoids KPop as much as possible: I've found that the overall disdain for idol actors is kinda silly. The poor girl was getting hate before she even appeared on-screen.

Thank you so much, LollyPip for recapping this drama. I was waiting for someone to recap this cause this drama's starting point is actually better then alot of dramas with star studded casts. It was solid, interesting, new and better premiere then the super hyped-up and super boring Producer, honestly.

I remember when everyone rolled their eyes when Seolhyun is casted but I think she did a pretty good job. Lee Jonghyun's first impression was great, starring him as the wronged and angry vampire, despite him appearing for like less then a minute in the first episode.

AND ALSO CAN WE JUST MENTION HOW FREAKING CUTE YEO JINGOO IS WHEN HE'S CHASING FOR SEOLHYUN ((ESPECIALLY THE NECK KISS)) LIKE OMG ITS HIGH SCHOOL LOVE ALL OVER AGAIN ITS SO FREAKINGGGG ADORABLE (I'm not gonna spoil for episode 2 but there's eVEN MORE CUTENESS IN EPISODE 2)

And that Go Ah-ra girl..... she kinda reminds me of the bullies in School 2013... so easy to hate...

Out of the new dramas, this and producer grabbed me the most.

Am so looking forward to many hours of inappropriate fangirling.

By the way, did anybody else catch YJG on guerrilla date? He just LOVES Noona attention. He was at the Seoul women university and he hopped onto the stage and said "oppa is here!!" And the women went wild. So funny.

Really loved the first episode.

It struck the perfect balance between presenting the ambiance of the alternate universe and giving a taster of the various characters.

Yeo Jin Goo was great, balancing comedy and depth.
I was surprised by Jonghyun, since even though he appeared only for a few minutes he made quite an impact.
Seolhyun is also doing a ood job. It can't be easy to portray Mari because even in the beginning of the web-comic she is quite stoic and detached from an outward perspective.

I love this drama, solid casts, nice pacing and the BGM are lovely

It's not just an ordinary teenage vampire angst drama, i do think it's more meaty with all the issues surrounding them

Yeo Jin Goo is doing a fantastic job so far as expected, I'm loving his cute school boy crush on Ma Ri

I really like Seolhyun as Ma Ri , i felt bad for her inner struggle to lead a normal life and she has this melanchonic looks that just grabs you.

Jonghyun surprised me as Han Si Hoo, you can felt his desperation in that interview, plus that crazy eyes while crying
He definitely improved from his wooden one dimensional acting in AGD

I'm excited for the upcoming episodes !!

Yay, I'm so glad this is being recapped!! I've gotten through a good chunk of the webtoon and I'm not going to try and dissect the differences because it's a compeltely different medium and they need to make it fresh but the one thing I do miss is....what happened to her female friends? I understand she's an isolated camp baby but what I liked in the webtoon is that she doesn't just find her way by leaning on the guys. She has her own friends too, even if it takes a while for her to accept them. Girls don't just need love interests. Sigh.

Moving beyond that, I think this was a pretty good start and I was surprised by the subway scene even though I know the scene from the original. Actually in both episodes I had to give kudos to their openess with sexuality even though it's kids. Yeo Jin-gu in this totally would have won me and my heart over in my younger years (I would say he still impresses me but I really do thoroughly view him as a "kid").

I think our leading lady is fine, but even in the webtoon she starts off very stiff and closed off so I can't come to a conclusion on her yet. I look forward to the plot though. Also, I'm so happy to see my favorite dad in this one!!

I know! One of my favorite parts of the webtoon was Ma-ri coming out of her shell and making her first true friend ever with Soo-ri, and I really hope they didn't just give all that development to the guys as fuel for the love triangle. Ugh. At least they introduced Soo-ri here?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I noticed they at least kept her in it...but she's a completely different role so far. I just feel like it means a lot more to have an actual friend be the first one to support her, but I know they're aiming for the romance and teen audience (not that I don't like or want those parts...cause I do, I just feel like friendship is so important in those years too and should also get an emphasis).

This has a completely different vibe than the webtoon. But honestly I love the drama premises so far than the webtoon's one given the webtoon's first few a chapters dragged on so...

But I agree, I miss the Soo-Ri character from the webtoon. She was extremely loyal and one the very first person to draw Ma-ri out of her shell. Hopefully they will bring her character out more in the upcoming eps...but overall it was a solid 1st ep!

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!!

I was curious about this drama and liked the cast, so I gave it a try. I enjoyed this set-up episode and I can already see YJG, SH, LJH pulling in strong performances for their roles.

Mari's childhood years must have been very sad and lonely. So, it's great to see her having a loving family to lean on.

Jaemin's family issues will likely come to light as we see more episodes. But he's definitely already smitten by Mari. Keke~ That kiss on the neck at the end... Wow, this series is fast-paced for skinship. Anyway, Jaemin was adorable when trying to get Mari's attention and she had no clue who he was.

Shihoo is very interesting to me just based on that interview alone. He presents a very sound argument in the sacrifice part if vampires were to co-exist with humans. The idea of having a VCS is intriguing.

I'm reading the webtoon now so I can compare and see how the production crew is adapting it for the drama. ^^

Lisa I was wowwed by that interview he gave when he was describing his fight and struggle. It made total sense from another perspective..especially when he spoke about the sacrifice they had to make in order to coexist with human kind, but what have the humans sacrificed in order to co-exist? Very powerful statement which made me his fan. His acting was superb and it was my first time seeing him, but he really captured my attention :)

It shows how selfish humans are in comparison and ultimately, humans just want vampires to comply to their rules.

" to find herself pretty much sucking Jae-min’s neck right there on the train. Not that he’s objecting. Quite the opposite, in fact. "

Can you blame him for not objecting, there's no males attracted to females, or I'm assuming females attracted to females, that would object to someone that looks like Seolhyun sucking on their neck.

I loved the first two episodes I hope the rest holds up.

I read some comments on viki and apparently the story they're telling in the drama is different than the web toon/manhwa whatever that it's based on. I don't know as I have not read it and most likely won't as there's not enough time in the day for me to add another hobby. I would be interested in knowing what exactly is different between the two though.

I'd say in opening week Seolhyun has proved that Jung Eun-ji is not the only female idol that can act.

So far, small differences. Like in the webtoon, Jae-min's mom is a teacher at the school and is the adviser of the the school band. She's not as motherly as the drama depicts her to be. Rather, she seemed selfish and frivolous. Jae-min doesn't hate her but he does seem very frustrated and disappointed in her.

Ma-ri's mom doesn't work at the restaurant, rather her aunt owns it and Ma-ri performs there from time to time. Ma-ri's aunt has a bunch of friends who know that she's a vampire.

There are other things, I'm sure. But I can't seem to remember much and I haven actually finished reading it yet.

The acting wasn't that great, that's true. I didn't expect anything from Kim Seol-hyun (knowing her previous work), but she did a solid and consistent job in the first episode -- she got the character introduction across the screen; better than, say, Kang So-ra in W&C, who is an actual actress.

The show, however, immediately found its tone for the genre -- unlike Producers. It didn't waste screen time on things that derail the story/character introduction -- unlike W&C.

And on top of a solid setup, this teen idol drama did dare to break a taboo all K-dramas shy away from: addressing the deep-seated racism in the Korean society.

0

Required fields are marked *

she doesn't really do anything, though? I mean, I got more of a sense of the character off the child actress who was in the dream sequence as her, than the lead herself. If Kang Sora was occasionally OTT, this girl has the opposite problem - she's completely insipid.

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't know the webtoon and how her character is supposed to be here or in the source material. But her "insipid" acting DID match up with the way her character is introduced. (It also fits the lifeless/dull characteristics of teenage/young adult romantic post-modern vampires, though they are usually male.)

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I've seen Kim Seol-hyun in "Seo-young" and "Fool Watch" before. She wasn't a good actress by any means, but she had her moments.

In "Fool Watch", she wasn't matched very well with some of her more frequent co-actors (Kang Byul, and Choi Tae-joon is not the most versatile actor either), but she had a great chemistry with Lee Soon-jae. And she definitely didn't stumble through the show like a sedated zombie, if that's what you fear. It was more her overacting that bothered me.

In "Seo-young" she only had a minor role, but that one looked like she takes acting seriously. She actually studied the actress that she was supposed to copy, in terms of walking, posture and (less successfully) intonation.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

wow, I'd completely forgotten she was in Ugly Alert/Fool Watch, and I actually watched that show.

She doesn't really make that much of an impression here either (the neck scene is whoa but Yeo Jin-gu dominates all their scenes together to the point that she fades in comparison even when she's central to the scene), but that's better than making an impression for your acting being horrifically bad like some people.

0

I've to agree w Jon that this actress is somehow better than Kang So Ra in W&C. How is that even possible???

And I agree w the assessment on both Producers and W&C, in comparison to this one. Hitting the nails on the heads.

Re "deep-seated racism": Not only that, they also mind very much which part of SK one is from.

I couldn't suspend my disbelief in this drama... I just felt like I was watching humans (and actors in some cases) with some occasional CGI-purple eyes slapped on. I wasn't pulled into a world were supernatural creatures exist – like in Arang, or movies like Jeon Woochie.

I'm not going to praise Kang So-ra in W&C! Or W&C which I dropped after two episodes as well. (Producers I had absolutely no problem with. Totally working for me so far.)

Seol-hyun (whom I have not seen in anything before) did zilch for me. She felt blank, not because she was acting to be insipid (I read the webtoon so I knew what kind of character it was), but because it felt like she didn't know what to do. I'm also feeling nothing of why Jae-min is attracted to her –e.g. some aura that she exudes to captivate him (which perhaps only really good actors can manage). But there are directional choices that could have helped convey that too which are missing, e.g. one of her attractions is her voice but the performance at the end was pretty, a pretty, sweet voice singing a generic song, not spellbinding (I'm thinking of Monstar, where some of the songs gave me goosebumps). Or in ep 2 (spoiler) when for some stupid reason the director decides to put in completely discordant background music when Mari strums the guitar instead of using that moment to enthral us the way Jae-min is enthralled.

Anyhow, I'll stop, I've dropped the drama so no point going on about it! Hope you enjoy it though. I'll patiently wait for Yeo Jin-gu's next project meanwhile.

Because
1. She's beautiful and his age.
2. She's doing really seductive things to him
3. Shares the same interests.
4. She has that "mysterious girl" vibe.

I actually like the setting and some of the supporting characters (the vamp parents are the cutest), and Yeo Jin-gu is killing it (though I had to look away when he was in the shower, because it was all kinds of 'why is this foetus naked!' wrong lol)

but I have to wonder if the lead actress is SUPPOSED to be that insipid. Her facial expression hardly changes in the entire forty-five minutes. There's a difference between playing a blank and controlled character and just lacking the acting chops to make her character seem like something other than a cardboard cutout. Far more suited to supporting characters than any kind of main lead role imo.

Oh, wow. I liked it a lot, held myself back from rewatching the second episode again. I like the tone and the setting of the drama, it's very dream-like. And Yeo Jin-goo is wonderful, of course.

I think Seolhyun is doing absolutely fine. She's playing a vampire who happens to be high school student and is supposed to be very stoic. And she happens to be this way because she is trying her best not to call attention to herself and not be discovered.

I'm not sure how "alive" people expect her character to be. She's not exactly amazing but I think she's doing fine with the character.

Omg Yes! I was hoping you guys would recap this here. I watched the first two episodes and was totally all in with this show!!!

Sadly, out of all the new dramas, this one was the only one that made sense and didn't make me fall asleep Lol granted it was a more "simpler" story (vampire vs. human) and the world is already set up by the webtoon but I also enjoyed the direction and cinematography. It's very wistful and dreary and then we have light moments like with Ma Ri's family.

Yeo Jin Goo is SOLID as expected. Man, that neck scene had my stomach going wooo hahaha I am very surprised at how much I liked Jong Hyun. He was great for an idol and Seol Hyun's acting was pretty on point with a few moment here and there that i felt she needed to up the emotion but there is definitely room to grow!

This is one show I will definitely invest time in, too bad it's the only one I want to keep watching despite the star studded high production dramas out there.

Thank U for the recap! I may sound harsh but I find the lead actress very bland. Being awkward socially or withdrawn doesn't necessary mean to act almost like an automate onscreen. She is like there but no really and i actually love the main actor and the premise so i hope as a the story will unfold and her character's personality will brighten up, she'll be more alive on screen. ^^

Such a nice recap for such a cute drama. was really worried the drama would be too similar to the webtoon thus there would be too many boring deja-vu moments but thankfully the drama kicked off very strongly and got me hooked. The cast are nailing their roles, Yeo JinGoo, he might not have the looks of the Jung JaeMin but he's definitely talented enough to do justice to the role. Seolhyun, AOA's girl, never watched her acting before but she seems to be doing a good job playing the emotionless Baek Mari. She does look stiff at times but it's okay, most actors look stiff in the first episodes. I'll pass this. Lee Jonghyun, CNBLUE's member, of wow~ Now he's got a pretty interesting role. The super handsome yet rebellious vampire. I loved his acting much more than in AGD. I think he CAN pull off the vampire role, his smooth voice, pale skin and fierce eyes. Yup he can do it. JongHo, I hated him so much in The Princess Man, but here in Orange Marmalade his character seems to be tender and caring. I'm looking forward to know his exact relationship with SiHoo by the way. All in all, I'm sold. I love the plot and all the changes made. Hope this drama keeps its nice pace and does well in the ratings. It's not the usual school life or vampire drama. I can feel that.

@ Sold
What you say about the actors and show is similar to what I've been thinking.

Where Jong Ho is concerned, I hated him in Suspicious Housekeeper and never recovered. I think (shallow a reason though this is) it could be the way he looks... looks nice but with those curvy emotionally mobile lips and penetrating stare that give me the willies.

And yes, this show does give off a vibe that it is not the usual kind of show. It's got my attention!! :)

Jong Ho was endearing in Reply 1997 and I'll have to agree, he was a real turd in Suspicious Housekeeper. :-D

I read the webtoon and I think the drama with all its changes is much better. I just hope they can keep the momentum going because the webtoon had the problem of putting all the action in the first couple chapters and then remaining painfully stagnant until nearly the end.

But mostly, I'm just weirded out that Lee Il Hwa and Song Jong Ho are supposed to be married when I've seen them as mother and son. Song Jobg Ho really does look like a vampire here though. Haha

I watched snippet of episode 1 with my little sister and the drama itself looks boring (although Yeo Jin Goo is deliciously handsome!) and I didn't like the lead actress. She didn't leave a strong impression.

My sister who has read the webtoon 5 times was very disappointed with this drama. She couldn't go past episode 1.

Escape, try giving it a another chance. Sometimes the first episode is much slower than the rest of the show. And I also agree that sometimes movie/drama adaptations don't live up to their original book. However this might turn out nice too :)

even though the drama didn't follows the webtoon closely by altering the plot and characters here and there, i actually like it better
I read the webtoon as well and i find it so draggy at parts
i like the pacing of this drama

I've also read the webtoon before, and it does quite draggy in the middle. And did they just change the teacher? Because in the webtoon it was jaemin's mother isn't it?

So the siblings are named Ma-Ri (Mary) and Joseph? I'm sure the writer did this on purpose, I wonder what the point of the allusion is.

Good catch @Jay and we need to keep watching to see if it pans out as an allusion to anything.

heh. I nearly cracked up at that! It didn't occur to me that it might be a real plot device though. That might be interesting.

2015 is really the year of high school dramas for me, not multiple personality disorder dramas or vampire dramas (albeit this drama is equal parts high school and vampire). Angry Mom, Who Are You: School 2015, and Orange Marmalade are shaping up to be my favorite dramas of the year, and not coincidentally, all three dramas star child actors who will soon rule the world.

Mari became my favorite character right off the bat. I empathize with her desperate struggle to fit in while forcing herself to suppress her natural tendencies. There is just something so tragic about her stuffing herself with garlic cloves alone only to throw it all up minutes later and constantly having to reassure herself, "It'll all be okay. I'll get through this." The fact that Yeo Jin Gu plays Jae Min makes his love at first sight sweet, but I have to admit his obsession with Mari came off a tad creepy. Then again, I have never read the webtoon, so I'm eager to see how everything plays out.

Thanks for recapping, LollyPip!

Thank you so much for recapping this! Ep 1 exceeded my expectations, and made excited about this ride. By the end. of ep 2, I was a giddy goner. I was so hoping that OM was going to be recapped here-- it's the kind of ride that's way more fun when shared.

I had read that OM was about a world in which humans and vampires coexist, but I had no idea that their relationship would be so tenuous. I'm psyched that Show is going to explore how fear can lead to hatred and discrimination as one of its major themes.

The rest of the setup was awesome, too. What's not to love about an innocent boy "having his whole world change in an instant" when his crush nibbles on his neck out of the blue, only to discover that she doesn't even remember him later? That's pretty impressive for a first-episode hook.

I agree with those who found Seolhyun's performance to be underwhelming, but it wasn't too problematic for me, and I loved almost everything else. I'm optimistic that I'll like Seolhyun a lot better in this as her character loosens up. I have a real fondness for her after watching Ugly Alert-- her acting was kind of a mixed bag in that, but she made her character very endearing by being sweet, charming and adorable.

I loved the recap, Lollypip-- your thoughts and feelings mirrored my own, but you articulated them way better than I could have. Thank you! I'm definitely on board this train-- and The Good Ship Lollypip!

Wow! They finanlly did it! and here I thought my day couldn't get any better.

I've read Orange Marmalade and really really like it. It made me cry too. That's why I am so surprised and happy to see it live in action. Though, there are a bit of changes, that won't stop me from reading the recaps and hopefully watching all of its episode.

Can't wait for the next recap.

Thank you.!

I have very little expectation for this drama, not because of supposedly idol actors casted as lead but the webtoon. The webtoon is seriously boring and cliche....

So props for writer, director, and actors. They make it really interesting and enjoyable to watch. I never watch Seohyun or Jonghyun drama before but they blend it well with the casts XD

Hello DramaBeans crowd! I'm back online after an AMAZING three weeks in South Korea. Wow…and now ready to start commenting again on a drama. It's been awhile since Healer and Orange Marmalade has drawn me back in. Granted, I am not a fan of zombie or vampire stuff and I tend to bypass the true teen rom-coms but Yeo Jin-Goo got me here. This young man (now 18) got my attention in The Moon That Embraces the Sun and I have researched everything he's done. There's just something about him and I'm going to go out on a limb to say that YJG is THE actor to watch for the future.. Check out his recent appearance on Happy Together variety show where he shows his sweet sincerity and great sense of playfulness with the group. His voice and his body and his mannerisms all scream "Old Soul"!!!! What a pleasure he will be to watch going forward!
