Happy Friday and OT!
It’s been sooo long since I’ve had the time to drop by OT. Where is everybody!?
Only watching two currently airing dramas.
SENSORY COUPLE: Overall enjoying the show, but there are so many little plot details that annoy the heck out of me. --SPOILER if you have not watched all episodes yet—Why oh why would Baek-kyung tell Jae-hee that the witness is still alive? It makes no sense to me. Why are the police so inept? I know hindsight is 20/20 and I’m looking at this through a lens in which I know who the killer is, but they have made way too many mistakes—setting up a sting operation out in the open at the hospital and making it so obvious that it was a setup trying to trap him with the whole Choi Eun-seol ruse. I know they’re trying to fill out the episode quotas but it is a tad annoying.
DIVORCE LAWYER IN LOVE: Four episodes in, I’d say it’s watchable but not the greatest rom-com ever. I really appreciate the performances of the leads though. It’s so refreshing to at least have actors who can actually act. I think the story has potential to get better—particularly with the flaky and hilarious Bong Min-gyu around. I am really curious as to where his character will go once he realizes he’s not the one for Go Cheok-hee. Will he handle her rejection with his usual nonchalant aplomb or will he go to crazy-ville in his quest to get the girl? At least there’s that to look forward to.

-spoiler for sensory couple-
Many people has discussed this, I guess... so, Baek-kyung's message was initially for MuGak. It is just the Jae-hee caught him (and put him in that white-creepy-room) before he delivered it to the right person.

--SPOILER--
Yeah, I'm a little late to the party, but I'm not talking about the letter Baek-kyung wrote that got left in the box (which so far no one has found). I do think that was intended for Mu-gak.
I'm talking about Baek-kyung leaving the cryptic message to Jae-hee on the CCTV when he was locked in the white room for a week, then leaving the message in his journal with the first letter of each line spelling out that the witness is alive.
So to me, he purposely told the killer about the witness. I can only think of one rational reason-- to make him uneasy that someone else out there knows, but to me, it would be better he did not know. I haven't been able to come up w/a reason why ultimately it would be beneficial for Jae-he to know that info though.

The letter was either for Mu-gak or Cho-Rim.
The video message and the book and the journal message completely confuse me. I don't understand why he would leave this clue for the Chef. Unless it is like you said, to make him feel uncomfortable, insecure in knowing that the witness survives. Like as a taunt "you think you've killed everyone? you're wrong. the witness survives". But this is really stupid and really put Cho rim in danger, so I really really don't get it. I hope they can explain this somehow.

I think a lot of us were confused by that - why would you purposefully give the killer (and only the killer) a clue that there's someone alive who can take him down? Especially when you were supposedly already feeling guilty towards that witness.
I enjoy this show a lot but a lot of things happen that seem illogical and only there to try and move the plot forward.

Elle, just sticking my head up for a minute to say hi as I am behind the clock recapping - you know it - Blood. Two more eps to go, and i have to say, I've managed not to avoid spoilers, so it really will be a blow by blow play. I like not watching ahead.
Keeping up with Grapevine and My Unfortunate Boyfriend, and a few other little sorties - The Lover, EXO Next Door, and Wook's Food Odyssey.
Another what-are-they-doing idol show, India Fluttering or Interesting India, where basically in the first episode they wandered around the Gateway to India hoping someone would recognize them. Which, for the most part, they didn't. At this point, any direction for the show would be an improvement.
It's all fun - more later!

Hi everyone
I just watch Falling for Innocent
and My unfortunate boyfriend this since I am still in some exam
but both the series surprisingly make me laugh no matter what, I do enjoy both of them immensely
I like the character in FfI just gradually changed and they accepted the way they are while have some explanation about the plot or the changing feeling of kang min ho,
sunjoong also feel sincere as worker, she did a good job and she cares, the timeline of the story is also good
joon also being a greedy yet scary lawyer or ceo wanna be
question: Is this drama popular?
cause I think it has the element of enjoyable show to watch without much deep though when you need to relax and light romance that make my heart flutter
the secretary (male) is so much fun
and the end of ep 8 is shocking me, I never think about that at all
for MuB, I just like no min woo and take all ep as comedy but I hate the way they edit it, it just loss things because I am fine with everything else, the acting for main character is enjoyable but the editing somehow make it tacky
I badly want to continue to watch angry mom, but I need to wait my feeling steady since It always take me off guard
Haven't watch Hwajung,
but I did re-watch Gekkon sho-jo no nozaki kun for some laugh over and over, ^-^

I just watched 5 ep, still on-air right now so I can't really said much
If you like a light story to spend the time than it's good,
the story is pretty thin with many sub-story revolving in my head, for now they don't really explore it, or maybe they will in later ep.
It tells a story about a girl who just hired as intern for 3 months before gets final conclusion
the company just wants to hired 1 worker but they have 2 strong candidate so both of them is hired as intern 1st
The story kinda revolves around her interaction with the unfortunate guy, who is worked as botanist for the company because he really good at managing plant, flower and all things in garden, he is handsome but he loves the flower like his own life, he wars work clothes all the time
sometimes it kinda cheesy but the acting is just too cute and legit for me to quit watching.
still for me some editing is off but then I find it enjoyable,
hope this helps

It really is a sweet little romance but it does feel a bit thin. I'd recommend it for the innocence of the love and ouri No Min Woo. He is quite good. There's something very newbie and schoolyard skit about the whole effort: the writing, the cinematography...but it's a sweet watch.

My Unfortunate Boyfriend is pretty fluff. It's nothing you haven't seen before, the characters, particularly the second leads and other supporting characters as stock as can be – the usual petty scheming, the chaebol, the jealous rich princess, etc etc. Some stuff is really overdone to the point that it's laughable (the lead jumps into the water and rises out of it shirtless... --> makes no sense at all. Same for rope scene, which just isn't possible.)
And yet... there's something very watchable about it. I have been pondering this (since I normally drop shows like this within a nanosecond), and I find it does have to do with No-woo, the lead, as well as the female actress. Not because they are great actors (they are decent), but because there's something about both their characters and their characters' interaction. No-woo is just genuinely sweet and quite innocent/pure-hearted (fortunately they shift away from portraying him as 'dumb' as they do in the first few episodes). The longer I'm watching, I realise the female lead actually isn't that different in this aspect – she has her tough, power-woman outer shell, but her clumsiness, her bumbling about, a certain naiveness too, the disheveledness beneath the business woman mask show a whole other side to her. Especially because we also slowly get to see that she's... kind-hearted.
And here's what really keeps me watching: that we see the two of them fall in love with each other – very slowly, gently but in a very true-to-life manner. Like they are both equally fascinated with each other. They don't mean to be, but they obviously are. You start realising it when like around ep 3 the female lead begins to soften around No-woo. She doesn't mean to, it just happens. Or in ep 7 (SPOILER) when they meet for a fancy event and each see the other dressed up and they're so obviously taken with what they see. I don't know, it's just done differently than in other dramas – normally, there's more push and pull, like one person not realising for the longest time that they're in love, or the other really pushing it. But here it seems just very natural. I could without all the machinations around them that seems to make up most of the plot and wish the second leads were more interesting characters as well, but there's something about the lead couple that just plain works.

Happy Friday Beanies! On to some reviews:
Smelly Girl Only through episode 9. Maybe it’s explained in the next one but I really don’t see why our resident villain had to maim himself. If he had no wound there then they would have written him off. I’d say he was toying with them, but he seemed like the kind who preferred to stay away from the investigations and be more anonymous so it doesn’t fit the pattern to me. I don’t know. Still really enjoying this show, especially our lead couple.
Vampire Prosecutor Uh, I watched all of Season One this week. All of it. I think this was because I came off of Blood and was bummed and so decided to finally watch this one. (I’ve heard season two is better, anyone?). It wasn’t as spectacular as I’d hoped but I absolutely got sucked in and despite the subject matter I found myself having fun while watching it and I like the dynamics of the core group.
Missing Noir M So excited that it’s not a two-parter, but also sad because it was gut-wrenching. I think this show has some flaws but overall I really like it. They’ve got the tone perfectly I think, and I enjoy our two main guys. I remember when this was being advertised that it looked a little bit like they were going with the typical clashing personality cop trope who then learn to appreciate each other, but I’m actually glad that they mesh together pretty well from the start even with different backgrounds and approaches. I do hope that the surviving “villain” from this comes back in a future episode but I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t.
School 2015 I’m mostly liking this so far. It’s mostly been plot set up though and a lot of the characters are a little too stereotyped at this point but I’m assuming (and hoping) that this is just because the show needs more time for character development but had to focus on plot first. Also, I can already tell I’m going to have SLS. Although mostly I think it’s because the lead actor and our surviving twin are both just a bit too perfect right now. I’m hoping for no actual deaths in this show but…..yeah, we’ll see.
Hwajung One behind on this but I’ll catch up today. Intense and good. Hoping I can hold out for 50 episodes – and looking forward to the more adult versions of these kids.
The Lover Full subs weren’t up last night so I skimmed over it. I do think parts of this are both hilarious and realistic, but I also am tired of bathroom humor. A third of the way in though and I’m starting to worry about the end game. I’m hoping the messages the show sends in the end are things I can be on board with.
Murphy’s Law of Love I’m surprised the cute streak is going. And while I liked the words he said on the stairs – it felt really odd and awkward to me that he just randomly went up and put his head on his shoulder before saying them. Also, slight eyeroll at having the sick mother. Still loving the cute; the main couple has really great romcom chemistry.

Re: Smelly Girl--I think it was a good move on his part to maim himself. The police thought for sure they had him when he had an identical wound from the perp they chased that night. When they found out it wasn't him they had to apologize. Now they've suspected him twice and been wrong. So, a couple of things will happen now. They are going to be really second guessing themselves going forward. They will also be hesitant to approach him again even if they do suspect him. If they ultimately arrest him, then I can just imagine the field day his defense attorneys will have tryouts big to get charges dropped or if they get to trial. The maiming was a pretty big deal on his part--only downside I see is they have his DNA now. That might be an important thing for police in the future. We'll have to see though.

I guess, but I think it's super risky to have police spending more time with you. And they clearly still suspect him, they just can't prove anything. If I were them I'd feel toyed with and be trying to figure out how it's possible. (I totally thought he was going to be a chimera at first.)

I do agree & I think that will be his downfall. He's definitely very arrogant & a part of his antics with the police feel like it's his way of proving he's superior to them. (I don't necessarily blame him b/c he's gotten away w/things for a very long time and he's been very clever at it.) But he's not infallible and I suspect eventually his mental gymnastics will ultimately get him in trouble. He is clearly one smart guy, but two heads are better than one and he happens to have 5 heads after him. Hopefully they'll get it together soon.

Season Two is SO MUCH better. There's more natural interaction between characters, there's better writing, and there's the scariest villain - if you were underwhelmed by Kwon Hyun Sang in Blood, be prepared to have your doors blown off. He is scary as hell in this. :)

Re: Psychopath Chef Kwon
The man Mu Gak chased cut himself and psycho knew that. He maimed himself because he knew the police would come looking for him, expecting him to be injured. So psycho basically led them to conduct a DNA test which, of course, didn't match with the sample they had from the chase.

I know that but it still seems odd to do that. Of the culprit cut himself there then Chef Kwon not being injured there would be as telling as having a wound whose DNA didn't match. In both cases he's not the guy. Instead his actions lead the police back to him repeatedly and also give them a DNA sample.

The chef is nuts. And you can't insane behavior. He didn't need to stab himself with a big steak fork (or whatever that utensil is called), but he did it because it seemed like the thing to do. I mean, why does he kill people? Why does he make them write books? Because he does. And (I know from personal experience with my psychotic ex- Daughter in law,) you can't make sense of crazy.

Yes, he's crazy but that really doesn't preclude him from being logical. In fact everything in this show has shown that he's very meticulous and thinks things out. Killing people is insane but not illogical. I think it's just lazy writing.

May 1, 2015 at 8:46 AM
The crime parts in Smelly Girl are far too illogical. Chef-nim bouncing through the whole country, contacting several people out in the open (his face very well know through his TV show) is too risky behaviour. Giving the police his DNA is like the stupidest thing ever.
I agree, the show is very weak in this regard, but somehow I'm able to forget everything about it and enjoy the cute OTP. Never thought I'd say that about SSK, but there it is. Yoochun is sweet as always and Min really delivers the evil.
This show is able to sell me a plot I'd run away from screaming with different actors.

"This show is able to sell me a plot I'd run away from screaming with different actors."
Yes! And yes again! It's all about the casting in this drama. And I'm not even a huge Yoochun fan, so I'm not watching it for him. I don't even know why I'm watching it, actually. I think because, despite the serial killer, it still seems like a light fun rom-com, and that's what I'm in the mood for right now. But with other actors, this plot mess of a drama that requires me to leave my brain at the door would be unwatchable.
4D
May 2, 2015 at 6:11 PM
I agree with both of you. I'm mostly in it cause I think I wanted a fun rom com and that's what I'm getting. Some nice fluff. The plot is eh but it's not why I'm watching.

School 2015
Well, the last episode played with the good twin/evil twin thing a little bit. Now the bullied twin has to face the consequences of the bully twin. I almost liked that when they hinted towards that twist, but of course I couldn't really enjoy it because of that giant plot hole: K-drama amnesia.
Yes, okay, K-drama amnesia is considered a very minor illness, like a common cold. It will go away on its own, usually sooner rather than later. But it's still freaking AMNESIA! She suffers from a 100% retrograde amnesia of her personal and episodic memory. That's not a common cold, that's a very serious mental and psychological handicap. And she gets about zero support from anyone other than her "mother". People just expect her to function like nothing happened.
Oh, not quite, everyone, including her friends and teachers, lie to her, manipulate her, because she has no idea what's going on and now is the chance to do it before her memory comes back. Is this for real?
Required fields are marked *
4D
May 2, 2015 at 6:15 PM
I think I've watched too many dramas cause the amnesia isn't bothering me to much. I hate amnesia in the middle of a show because it feels much more like lazy writing to me. As a framework for starting a show....well, it's still not at all realistic or believable but I'm not quite as bothered.
Right now our lead is a bit too Korean heroine ideal stereotype but I'm thinking/hoping it's just because they had to do so much plot setup. She just that poor, hard-working, kind, and "normal" girl that I've seen too often. At least she's not up against the private school chaebol boy at the moment.

About Smelly Girl - Like Elle said, it is probably move on the chef's part to make the cops very suspicious of him and then prove them wrong; then they will be hesitant to suspect him another time. Also murderers get overconfident with each murder they commit. That leads to them overlooking something and cops catches them through that mistake. JH's overconfidence can be another factor that led him to inflict the wound on himself. Another possible explanation is that it was just there as a plot point. (Possible Spoiler)..........................Because that move from JH's part led MG to deduce that he was at the scene of the chase. Otherwise JH couldn't have known the exact location of the wound on the dupe guy.
I'm enjoying this show though the things the cops overlook is bothering me. Like how they just let JH go into the Dr. Chun's container. Even if Chun's uncle told him to go inside, the security should have said that no outsider is allowed to enter. Urgh! But at the same time, I do understand that the cops' incompetence is necessary to move the story forward for 16 episodes and also give our male lead instances to shine. If JH hadn't gone in, he never would have gotten the X-ray and would not be one step ahead of the cops until the very end.

I don't know if the villain will be back as such, but I'm hoping that in the end that envelope on the table contained a recording of what the villain said to the guy he helped get off. I know it's not admissible in court but given to the right people it would ruin him. The envelope did disappear when Gil Soo Hyun left the room, and he has the habit of doing what he feels is right, whether it's according to the book or not. One can hope.

Hi Everyone!
I hope you are all doing well today. ....... Getting warmer and warmer weather with each passing day. I hope you are all enjoying sunny days also.
Watched this week:
Angry Mom - Just saw the second episode last night. Quite a few questions already! ....... A different tone with this one, but looking forward to it.
Girl Who Sees Smells - Still just catching bits and pieces of the first episodes. Not super excited about it though.
Mr. Selfridge (Season 3) - Oh my goodness, what happened to Mrs. Grove! ....... That was certainly an unexpected twist.
Wolf Hall - You can either will things to happen or engineer them. It's pretty clear how they go about things in this interpretation of life in the royal court of Henry VIII.
That's about it for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Korfan- hi how are things?
England is in a wierd weather period. Last week was warm, this week is colder with altering rain, sun and hail (boy that was a fun day). I would have understood it if it was norway, but not here. so strange when i talk to my dad back home though and they have snow storms going on. I feel permanently weather/season confused.

Hi! Doing well, thanks. .... Started the Angry Mom drama, and it looks interesting. A little different for me, but interesting.
Yeah, the weather gets a little crazy like that nowadays. Sometimes, it seems like you can get all four seasons in one day!
We need rain though, and a lot of it, because we're going through our 4th year of drought. :(

I've heard about the legendary English rain. ..... A good friend of mine just returned after a prolonged stay there and the first thing she said was, "I'm so glad to be back home! It rains every single day in the UK!"

And a non-review post for the adventurous (or bored):
So…some of you maybe remember me posting about possibly going to a concert this summer but I wasn’t sure I wanted to go alone. Well thanks to a fellow Beanie, I won’t be going alone! Also, the ticket process was rather ridiculous but I got the tickets I wanted and I’m SO excited!! I don’t even care anymore that I’m most likely way older than most of the fans. Even got hi-touch with the tickets which I’m kind of excited for but also kind of wanted to back out from. I know it’s only two seconds and nobody will care but I don’t want it to be odd when the old noona comes around. Also I wish I was at least capable of saying something basic in Korean. I know they’ll get basic English phrases but…it would be nice.
Also I randomly had a dream that Running Man filmed in NYC. In my dream I was in some sort of bookstore which was a destination for the show and racing around the corner comes Kim Jung Kook! And then he has some sort of task card where he has to interact with regular people in the store so naturally it’s me…and part of it apparently was he had to get down on one knee and hand me a red rose. My subconscious is weird. I apparently like Kim Jung Kook a lot more than I thought. I wish it had been more adventurous though. It would be so fun to actually be on that show and compete (I would be terrible, but it would still be fun).
I’ve been watching a lot of shows lately where the bystander effect is rally pronounced. Obviously all countries have this but I’ve heard/read that it seems to be stronger in a lot of Asian cultures. I can’t say one way or the other but I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this? I think living in the city that I see a lot of apathy when it comes to, say, the homeless or the many people around who seem to be struggling. However, when it comes to specific acts of violence I’d say that here someone would say something or do something (like if they saw someone hitting, beating, stabbing, etc.). Some people may not physically get involved but would still call the police if needed. I’ve seen some instances of bad things here and someone always has stepped in. Even just someone falling most people around that person help or at least ask if they’re ok. These shows though (and I know it’s a show so most likely situations are exaggerated) lately that I’ve been watching just have people completely in their own bubbles and unwilling to step out for others. Or on the rare chance someone does, it’s met with “who are you to get involved in someone else’s business”. As if you have to be related to someone in order to care about them or to want to stop something bad from happening. Honestly it’s made me a bit down.

Yay for concerts! Which one is it?
As for the bystander thing: i noticed this when i was in china, especially the sometimes seemingly reluctance of helping or asking if you are okay. I know that in china there have been scams going around. Where someone will fall down and then when people go to help the person makes a big scene basically making the person trying to help into the culpit. So because of this many don't want to help. It is also a case of if you help someone then you become tied to them. So taking say an unconcious person to the hospital msy turn out to make you financially responsible for that person.
Obviously not everywhere has this, nor everyone thinking like this but it is one aspect to it. Another is as you say, "getting involved in someone elses buisness". This is all over the world, just that a lot of shows don't focus on it. Like in the west as well its a focus to get "the full picture", so people do sometimes feel reluctsnt to get involved in fear of being wrong/making things worse. Bullying is the same, sometimes it is easier to turn a blind eye in the case of self preservation: don't act so you don't become a victim.

I mean, I guess I can already say some simple things like hi and thank you but I don't know...it would be cool if I could say something slightly more specific. And also ensuring I understood what any possible response could be. I do have a Korean friend (in Korea) so she might teach me some stuff over Skype and check my accent to at least make sure I'm not massacring the pronunciation. I know, I'm overthinking.

This is very true! And while you may not realize it now, if you ever try to actively learn some basic Korean grammar, something in your mind will probably click. You have been hearing Korean sentences over and over so you DO know something in the back of your mind! This happened to me with Japanese first and is now happening to me with Korean. I would never say I speak or fully understand either language but it's amazing how many things you can pick up just by watching dramas, variety shows, etc. without realizing. The human mind is amazing!

I wouldn't say that it's more pronounced in Asian cultures, though. I'm Indonesian by race and lived there for 16 years, and I can say that wasn't the case, at least back then. There have been cases where the result of people interfering have been horrific, however. If someone was robbed and screamed "thief!", people will try to catch the thief and if he's caught, there's a high chance that person wouldn't even made it alive from the mob. Most wouldn't call the police until the thief has just been beaten to pulp.

I might be mistaken but I think that US states all have a version of the Good Samaritan law, that if you see someone in physical distress and do not make an effort to help and/or contact authorities you can go to jail or be sued, or both, depending on the state.
With cell phones taking more and more videos of incidents, I imagine more do nothings will be caught along with the criminals.
Keep that in mind in USA, call 911 and have that on record before taking the video, or right afterwards.

Wikipedia has it as "Good Samaritan laws offer legal protection to people who give reasonable assistance to those who are injured, ill, in peril, or otherwise incapacitated.[1] The protection is intended to reduce bystanders' hesitation to assist, for fear of being sued or prosecuted for unintentional injury or wrongful death."

Happy Weekend! It's May! Summer break is almost over. But on the brightside there's only 25(?) more days til Song Joong Ki's discharged!!
RUNNING MAN - To the beanie who suggested watching the first 7 eps: A big thanks to you. I was just gonna watch those but I ended up watching 1 I watched 'em straight and was called crazy for laughing so much. I do not regret anything. Heh. Peaceful Gary and his gallery is as gold as the pigs. Oh what would I do if I never heard Suk Jin's I Swear? If it's this show, I'd watch all the episodes without skipping. Probably.
GAG CONCERT - The atomic pride segment cracks me up and am casually watching.
MARRIAGE NOT DATING - I honestly kind of dropped this drama though I'll call it halted. I feel less guilty with halted. The first time around I couldn't take the second-hand embarassment. And though I liked the leads, I stopped. I still can't take the embarassment. I sometimes fast-forward then go back and watch while cringing. I've watched more melo than romcom. That's why I'm immune to angst, noble idiocy, candy types, sicknesses, etc. Embarassment and hijinks are my achilles heel. Oh yeah. Best piggyback ever!
PERSEVERE GU HAE RA - I finally found it in me to watch the last ep! I cringed at the stalker fan. I could stand the stabbing, the villains who only existed for obstacle's sake. I could even stand the noble idiocy and the usual angst that I thought wouldn't have place in a 12 episoder. But I couldn't stand the fact that Hae Ra, together with her character development and her father's song, got side-tracked(for the most part) for romance. I'm a sucker for romance but they went grabby grabby. And she was passed back and forth like a basketball. Ugh. I don't hate this drama. I really don't. I guess I'm just a little sad. It had a lot of potential(mostly wasted). But it's fine. Because the music is great. I used to cringe at Kpop(I now like it). But this drama had great music that's now in my playlist. I fell in love with the music. It started with that opening song! I like everyone, even Sa Ki Joon. I love Team Never Stop. And Jin Young. So while the drama is forgettable, the music is not. :)
26 Years Diary - A Japanese film that pays tribute to the late Lee Su Hyun, a South Korean student, who died while trying to save a man in the train tracks. I watched it out of curiosity and I was craving for slice of life. Honestly, I was gonna bail before the hour mark. But I stayed. The movie was flawed. The story was messy and the characters were mostly flat. And it lacked direction. But now I know that Korea and Japan have a bitter history. And now I know Lee Tae Sung. I won't call it authentic or credible. But the music was great.
Har har. I said too much. Probably. I used to think that I'm a person of few words. I don't think so anymore. ;)

Hello, all:
Spring is sprung! This weekend is the Kentucky Derby. I might go and bet the longshot. Younger son got his wisdom teeth extracted. Soo happy about that. I don't have to worry about his pain. Had a bad flu but am now over it and am also recovering from Jon-Marc's suicide. So..am feeling life is good...or at least that it can be good.
Dramas:
Girl who sees smells: I love this drama although wow, it can be frustrating. The choices these characters make --especially the cops' stupid decisions-- are so convenient to the plotting that I find myself arguing with every manipulative moment. But, dang! The love story is so sweet and organic! Oh my gosh, that confession! I know the crime plot is supposed to be the main plot but wow...what a gentle story! Love and dating that happens without any major declaration.
I like how all our major players are dealing with pain/non-pain, knowing/non-knowing, family/family-less-ness. So far the only full family we've seen was the cop and his brother who accidentally killed the girl. Everything else is in a found or created family or social group (cops, troupe, kitchen staff.) Not feeling sorry for chef, though. A bit easy to have Big Bad be alienated from parents, culture etc from birth.
Grapevine:
Wow! Loving the complications. This is one very organic story.
Unfortunate Boyfriend:
Sweet! Normally I hate kdramas overcomplicating a plot. But is does feel a bit thinly-plotted. I keep thinking the backstory/sub-plot/secondary plot should've been kicked in already. But we don't know enough about the politics etc ...a lot of focusing on the romances. Second Lead lady is majorly nasty. But I suspect the second lead guy is also just as nasty.
Missing Noir M:
Returned to this after avoiding epis 3 & 4. Episode 5 was so good. The ending suicide was a bit jolting for me. But it worked as a story.
Have a good weekend, all.

Just wanted to say that I agree with everything you said about Girl/Smells. I'm really enjoying it because of our main couple and their straight forward but sweet relationship. However, I think the plot and manipulations will prevent this from being something that really sticks with me or that I rewatch.

In stories, the main plot carries the action and keeps the viewer's attention while the heart and/or theme of the story is carried by the sub-plot. Sometimes a writer is good at the secondary sub-plot and writes purely in that one aspect but still needs to create suspense. When that happens one ends up with easy kneejerk action in the main plot. The love story in GWSS is so real and it shows the writer can really write. But the crime stuff is added for momentum. But writer uses every kdrama trick in the book to keep upping the suspense of drama which is kinda insulting to the viewer.
The acting troupe thing seems to have been done to "add" both to the theme and the suspense. But the writer isn't using that well either. Heroine's acting skillz got job on the kitchen show but other than that... meh. I'm suspecting/hoping the acting thing will be a major part of the story later.
Right now, Unfortunate Boyfriend is pretty much trusting that the love story will keep the viewer interested by making the love story of both couples what drives the plot. And it's doing a good job of doing that. And I can see the writer wanting to add more suspense with a secondary plot but not being really committed to it. Will see what comes.

Smelly Girl jumped the shark for me this week. Sorry, but that Chef is trying to give the detectives a Hannibal Lecturing?
The same guy who tried to kill a detective in front of four police witnesses? The same guy who stabbed a police in the guts but didn't even kill him? The same guy who installs a spy app on a freaking police cell phone*? He's a clueless idiot and the only reason he hasn't been caught yet is because the police are utterly incompetent.
Really guys, your romance is great, but that other thing to try to push ...
*) That's a 100% safe way to be caught in less than 24 hours in real Korea.

I'm speechless here. Every time I think: "Now they will make a miss-step and slightly disappoint me", they just get better. When the affair came up, I thought "oh well, there you go", but it became another fantastic series of battles in the ongoing war and provided fantastic development for a significant number of characters.

Our Serial Killer does seem to be way busy at times. I did kinda think that serial killers thought things out slowly. But yeah....He seems to do more unthought-out stuff on the spur of the moment...mostly for the writer's convenience. I still don't know what our bad guy thought he would get from doing a show on urchin seaweed soup. Did he think everyone would watch his show? Did he think some girl would rush in and talk about the soup? Nah, writer wanted cheffie to do it so we could be stressed.
I'm still wondering why our good doctor would give away the truth about the witness being alive....to the murderer. The spyapp was so ridiculous...and would never work if the cops themselves weren't so inept. I kept thinking... "okay, everyone knows the villain thinks the witness is alive. But the chief is not going to tell the witness or her boyfriend to beware of the chief suspect although chief suspect has hired the witness. And really, how many times did they talk about the lost witness and the murdered mom and dad and NEVER ONCE did they put up a pic of the lost witness on their screen? And why is there no photo of her dad in Chi Rim's house? Wouldn't something be there for her boyfriend to see? And why did chef go to talk to Detective Oh if he didn't want to kill him? We never got any inkling of info the detective might have given up?" Yep, the questions go on....and on...and on. But once you accept that it's a kdrama and the cops are inept and everything is convenient...then you can breathe easier.
Yes, Grapevine is amazing. I do wish I could trust the activist lawyer but Mr Je Hoon seems a little fuzzy to me. Is he really battling for the little guy? Or is it about investments? Or both? And am hoping Little Sis will learn a lesson about gratitude.

I'm pretty sure that almost none of the questions will be answered by the show. The writer really seems to be struggling with the mystery plot to the point where things happen for no other reason but to advance the plot. I'm usually good at staring into my fridge to come up with ridiculously far-fetched explanations for these things, but even I am at loss.
Well, the romance is cute. At least when MG can avoid the yucky Edward Cullen boyfriend routine.

I don't think he is trying to screw his "uncle-in-law". He is cautious, but so far, he showed no signs of any kind of deviousness. He was wary of Lawyer Han very early in the recruiting process. The show did never, not once, compromised the integrity of a character for a cheap plot twist (dear George R.R. Martin, you can take a lesson from a freaking K-drama writer).

Seo Bom's sister, the anchorwoman.
And yes, so far...no cheap twists..but in such a world where all the rich folks (and their friends) are selfish, it's hard to imagine an activist lawyer with a pure soul. I was wondering why he talks so much with Investor/Friend/Confidante at the girl's club. Hey, they could be secret gay lovers but I feel wary.
Jon G.
May 1, 2015 at 10:36 AM
Wait, Bom is the younger of the two sisters. That's why I asked. And that's also part of the reason why I always supported Bom's unni a little bit more than Bom herself when they had a conflict. Back then, Bom idolised her father-in-law and wanted to become a psychopath just like him, and that scene where she tortured her sister really broke my heart. Yes, her sister is a social climber, but so is Bom, and her sister, at least, was pretty honest about it.
I don't think Je-hoon is a "pure soul". He let himself blackmail into Hansong in the first place. He just has his own set of values and goals; and right now, they kind of line up with some of the goals of the conspirators.
Btw, not only the rich guys are selfish, the poor guys are just as selfish, and they are much weaker morally. Which I really like, because reality.
CaroleMcDonnell
May 2, 2015 at 6:43 AM
Oops. Forgot who was the younger. Thanks.
Re: Bom. I think Bom is stuck in a situation where she has to do what is necessary...so learning how the mercenary folks behave and think is her only way of surviving. She didn't aim to use In Sang. She didn't even know who he was. And everything she does, she does so she can remain with In Sang and also so she can help her family.
Her sis always wanted to use people. Even when Bom was suffering with the family, Sis just thought of how Han CEO could help her own life. And the first thing Sis did was get involved with some rich guy and use her father-in-law's name among the rich set. And even now Sis is only thinking of her own career. Even though she wouldn't have this career without her sister having helped her, she resents Bom and says ungrateful things.
Hey, George R R Martin doesn't have twists. Folks are pretty true to themselves. There are a lot of surprising sudden deaths out of the blue..but those aren't twists...just savagery and betrayal and evil machinations. Usual sword and sorcery stuff.

Grapevine: what I love about this show is everyone's actions are totally believable. Given their past, and the way their character's are written, it is just exciting to watch. They aren't doing what I think they'll do--but every choice they make, ever action they take is consistent. This is my favorite show right now. (And if the writer doesn't blow it) it may be among my all time favs.

Exactly. Well designed, coherent characters, making consistent decisions and having to deal with the consequences. And they do and learn from them, both positively and negatively.
This is a social satire, and it still runs circles around any other K-drama in the character design department.

Happy Friday! Sorry in advance for the long comment:
I’m utterly in love with Ruler of Your Own World I just started Wednesday and I tried not to fall too soon, but while all the shows currently on my roster are excellent, I was restless and finding something else to watch was always on my mind. I was sticking to movies so as not to overwhelm myself (and to truncate my ever growing list) but it wasn’t working. I initially thought I sought something light and frivolous to offset the heavier stuff was what I required, but I pressed play and 15 minutes in it was like aaaaggghhh, itch scratched. It had been on my list forever because of my strange love for YDG and an interest in the plot. Then I saw other beanies on OT were raving about it a while ago so it got bumped up in my queue. I’m 6 episodes in and simultaneously want to spoil myself to be rest assured that everything turns out ok, and and stop watching lest it fail me.
Baby YDG is adorable, cheeky and teddy-bear squishable. His acting style has changed a bit (certain gestures and expressions were less restrained) but either way the result hurts as to why we don’t see more of him.
Baby Gong Hyo-jin. I’ve always liked her due to general consensus but looking closely it’s never been more than a surface appreciation and objective aquiestment of her skills. Her second leading role as Bok-su’s girlfriend is the first time she has hit me as feeling “all there”. This is her best character for me. One of the reasons I’m afraid of continuing is my worry of her fate. I’d be really disappointed if she got the typical second lead treatment of going to cray-town or abruptly switching gears to another guy (looks like Kyung’s gangpae oppa is being set up for that). I also really like their relationship, so despite my enjoyment of the leading lady’s atypicalness, I wish they would stay together.
Baby Lee Dong Gun looks odd to me this young lol, I waffle back and forth with Mr. Han. He’s not a bad guy just frustratingly self absorbed and entitle, even though it’s couched in cutesy. He’s the kind of guy that merely seeks to placate instead of please, going “yes dear” but never really listening and thus never really gets to know her. He’s “sweetly” dismissive of her attempts to show him. or rather her just being her, constantly shooting himself in the foot before the race even starts. I have sympathy for him as a guy who isn’t winning the girl he likes, or maybe just as a fully-fleshed character (these types are needed too), but he’s not a guy I’d see as worth investing a relationship in. They’d never grow, and unless something gets shaken up I can’t root for him either.
Also still watching Legend of Zhen Huan (at 41: there’s a new kid on the block. Lawd have mercy, these women are like hydra) and I’m behind on Grapevine and M.

Hi Muse!
Haven't seen a Ruler of Your Own World yet, but I too had heard good things about it. It's on my list of classic dramas to recap, but it's kind of in like fifth/sixth place now so don't know when I will get to it. When I was doing research on good classics to recap, I came across a post on Thundie's Prattle about the drama & that's what put it on my radar. Apparently there was a guy who translated the entire show and Thundie interviewed him about what made him do subtitles for it, etc. Check it out. From what I remember, he raved about Ruler too.

Though I take that to mean he's eating and sleeping better which is just fine by me and I prefer his variety self to his acting anyway unless it's Blade Man-esque. Lol at first world problems. That's why OT is so dangerous for me because I have a queue longer than my arm, but everyone talks about stuff I haven't seen yet and my eyes are larger than my (drama) stomach. Le sigh. So much for cutting back.

MY GIRL was one of the best series ever!
FULL HOUSE - I thought Rain's personality was INSUFFERABLE!!! He never dropped his PITA persona, not even for a second. He's a very unlikeable character in this. He was such a PITA that I tend to avoid him in other things. I know it was just a role, but maybe he played it too well.

Ruler of Your Own World is one of my all time favorite dramas in fact right now it's tied at number one with Answer Me 1997.
I don't agree with you on Gong Hyo-jin in that while I agree she's awesome I think she's had plenty of other roles where she's just as good as not better.
Don't worry about typical drama things like crazy second leads they don't happen. From what I can tell it was different from anything that had come before and remains different from pretty much every other Korean drama. Honestly the closest thing to it I've seen would be a good Japanese slice of life story or some of Noh Hee-kyung's work such as Goodbye, Solo or Padam, Padam.

I still thin she's been good in other roles, it's just that this is the first time I've loved her character as much as I like her, instead of just "this character is such and such and she plays it well" and I credited my attachment to a difference in the vigor of her portrayal.
Yay! I'm glad it stays good. I don't think I would've been able to stay away anyway, but thanks for putting me at ease :)

What is this strange love for YDG, indeed, because I have it too. He can be very annoying and mannered as a actor to me but I just find him watchable and attractive none the less. Ruler of Your Own World is a particular favourite of mine. I watched my first Korean drama in 2012, although I was a huge fan of Korean movies for several years before that, so I'm not an expert on classic Korean dramas at all. RoYOW seems so different in tone and characters from any other drama I've seen. It's just about people, living their lives. Bad things happen, good things happened, they make mistakes and hold on to things they know they should let go. It's got a relaxed flow to it but it's never boring. Highly recommended!

Yes I'm loving how naturally the show flows. The competition is stiff, but Ruler def has a leg up.
AGHH YDG! I originally side-eyed him because I knew him as a rapper first and while I liked his flow, the videos would just have me in stitches (nothing particularly unfamiliar but usually what Kent transplants from our hiphop isn't that old school so it was new in a sense). Anyway, that was pretty early on for me so I was still of the mind that "switching over" (from music to tv etc) was selling out in a sense (an idea which is off to me now *shrug*).
I had avoided his acting projects until while I was on a Joo Sang Wook kick, he happened to be in the later's movie The Punisher/Days of Wrath. His character was so despicable that calling him a douchebag is a compliment (though that was mostly set up in the child segment) and yet his performance was the most memorable in the movie. But it wasn't that I "loved to hate" him! idek but damn I was sold. Then seeing him in Hero, 3 Musketeers, and now this? I'll need to watch more soon. He's alright by me ^_^

I like YDG"s hip hop stuff especially Golmokgil which I think translates to Alley. Play it all the time. He was great in Days of Wrath especially since both he and Joo Sang-wook were playing against type as the complete upperclass bullying douchebag and the damaged bullied underdog. According to his filmography, he got his start as a child actor.

Hi OT!
I finished Kill Me, Heal Me two weeks ago, and then was stuck trying to find something else as engaging to watch. But I do find that with some time having passed, for some odd reason it isn't as fresh and as easy to recall as I thought it would be. (Or, maybe I'm just getting old.) I loved Ji Sung in it, and that's pretty much my assessment of the show--that it rests on the shoulders of his mighty, tremendous, charismatic acting.
Then I shifted gears and started the Taiwanese drama, Apple In Your Eye, which is by the same writer who penned the original In Time With You.
It has the same flavor as ITWY, but refreshingly features quite a bit of pretty animation. It's also loaded with trademark Taiwanese self-conscious "philosophising over life," which has always annoyed me cos all it is sometimes is someone trying to sound very meaningful and, yeah, deep. But [*spoiler alert*] episode 10 or 11 marked a downhill turn, which I've halted mid-hill, still undecided as to whether I'll continue watching. Actually, I get that something drastic needed to happen (sort of), but I SO very dislike the "kidnapping," and also the "resolution." Ugh.
At least watching this puts me in the mood to wait for the Korean version of ITWY!

If you're looking for a Taiwanese drama that stays good, I'd recommend Mr. Right Wanted which is less frivolous than its title. It balances humor and depth well. The depth isn't tryhard IMO either, though that may depend on how well you can relate to the characters. I found it quietly introspective.

I think KMHM is still fresh. it is just that it was always a bit silly and campy. from the beginning. the same as Back To The Future or Batman are not modern, but people love re-watching them, because you know, they are legendary.
and the fact that the alters have become icons, when a character in another drama does something similar now people refer to it as "pulling a Se Gi" or doing the Yo Na act. I think that if anything shows timelessness.

Big Bang's Loser is a total ear worm. I can't get the chorus out of my head, and I've only heard it twice- once to watch the video, and once to watch the video with lyrics subbed. I think it's a beautiful song, but I hate the message, so I'm desperately trying to get something else stuck in my head. I mean, really, do I need to go around repeating that "I'm a loser, loner... dirty trash, in the mirror" over and over? Um… No.

My dissertstion is not that secretive ;) i am writting about viking swords and trying to argue that they were more than just weapons of war. In this case it was the metal mixture and process that makes up swords from roman times and upwards. You get sick of hearing sbout how the metal contained to much carbon, or too much of this or that after snwhile. I wish it was alchemy though! That would probsbly be more fun (although potentially less relevant)

Haha, te question on them is how much we can rely on them because the versions we have is written mostly n the 12th and 13th centuries, depicting events happening some 200 years previously. I am of the school that believe we can use them however, because they still contain cultural ideas.
For me the thing is that I have to narrow down to specific ones, because sadly there fare too many of them for me to read all of them to find which ones I could use. That's why poetry is a bit more important for me, since it's more contemporary with the archaeology.

Hi all,
Hope everyone's having a good long weekend.
Currently watching:
Missing Noir M: I like the tone of this show. I'm not sure whether this is meant to be 1 case 1-2 episodes, or is there supposed to be an overall mystery they're trying to solve? There are definitely holes in the procedural but I really like the 2 main leads, especially in the latest episode. So far the cases have been quite dark and very sad.
Sensory couple/Girl who sees smell: I like the rom com part of this drama, sooo cute. The mystery solving bit is not great. The liuetenant went from a tough police woman to a weird pretending to be tough police wannabe. I don't get her character. It's taken her too long to realize who Cho rim is. I'm overlooking the plot holes in the mystery parts because the rom com is just too cute.

Good morning, all! And Happy Beltane to those who celebrate it! :)
What I've been watching this week:
Missing Noir M: I was surprised they left the two-episode-arc format, but the story was fine. Still aces all around - acting, writing, direction, everything. :)
Let's Eat, Season 2: Not enough eating. And that kid from Blade Man is really creepy. While I was watching this week, though, it really made me think about weird it must be for cultures with very little casual touching to visit the US. We're very huggy.
Also, is fried chicken w/cheese really a thing in Korea?
The Lover: Haven't seen this week's episode, but now I'm kind of invested in the gay couple.
Divorce Lawyers in Love: Only watched two episodes so far; I dunno. I'm not really hooked, but I love watching Yeon Woo Jin pull faces (and his office mates calling him 'pregnant smile' - ie, you could pregnant just from his smile) cracked me right the hell up.
What I want to be watching:
The Avengers: Age of Ultron: Alas, I have to wait til tomorrow. I understand a bunch of it was shot in Seoul? (Which, by the by, appears to look an awful lot like Atlanta, Georgia. Just interesting. Anyway, superheroes! Fighting giant robots! Snarky dialog! Beautiful actors! Yessssss.
K-drama Moment:
Got the opportunity to recommend some Korean movies after a patron watched Snowpiercer. Mwahahahahahaaaaa.
My coworker finished Marriage not Dating w/a new craving for Korean rom-coms & a huge crush on Yeon Woo Jin. ::grin::
Alas, our Russian speaker at work is retiring. I say 'Russian speaker', but she speak five languages - Russian, Spanish, English, & French fluently, and a bit of Chinese. So far, one coworker is taking French, I'm learning - well, Korean, not Chinese, but still - Asian, and I told the other two that they're going to have to figure out who has to learn Russian & who has to learn Spanish.
Can any Eastern European DB folks tell me how to say "Our Russian speaker retired" in Russian? I have a feeling I'm going to need it.

About Divorce Lawyers in Love:
The setup within in the first two episodes is rather hasty, it gets less heavy-handed and more, ehn, "subtle" afterwards (which can be a good or a bad thing).
I didn't really like the whole rushed humiliation conga Cheok-hee was/is pushed through. She is basically blamed for killing that cheating husband (not just by some partial people, but by the show itself). This guy killed himself because he cheated and his wife wanted to divorce him.
So everybody hates his wife's lawyer and she loses her admission in a plot hole, her life ruined. And THEN the drama starts ...

Re: Divorce Lawyer
I don't think everybody blamed her. I think she did play apart in driving the guy to suicide though and I think she feels rightfully remorseful for her role. She was used though--by the wife-- but .i don't that diminishes her culpability. It's really just the guy's sister Dong-I'm who blames her, I think.
She lost her license b/c she broke ethical rules and the law. AND she totally should have lost her license for that. She was willing to win at all costs & she gambled on getting away with using illegally obtained evidence and lost. Pretty stupid if you ask me--for someone so driven to success, it see,s counter-intuitive to me to risk your entire livelihood on one case.
It's just ironic that the person who filed the complaint wasn't doing so b/c of her violations of the law, he just did it to retaliate b/c she outwitted him.

She didn't drive him to suicide. He cheated and failed to stay married to his horrible wife. He couldn't handle the shame and killed himself.
Yes, he might have gotten away with the cheating and being married to a monster thing with his wife's lawyer (no, he wouldn't, his wife would have exposed him as a hypocritical cheater anyway).
To say that Cheok-hee drove him to suicide is like saying that the camera drove him to suicide.
In the early episodes, she gets blamed a lot for the suicide and she gets zero support from anyone (including herself). She gets kicked in the nuts by the plot (so even the writers apparently blame her).
She used illegally acquired evidence, which, by itself, is NOT a crime in Korea and will NOT get your admission suspended or revoked. (And if it was, Korea would have about zero lawyers.) If she was charged with manipulation of evidence, or invasion of privacy or something, she would lose her admission, but only after she would have gone to jail first. That didn't happen, we know that the wife never got indicted, she didn't went to a trail, she went on to become the best Korean actress ever.

I have a question - if the lawyer had advised the wife to have the camera fixed (instead of fixing it herself), would that still be considered to be illegally obtained? (I'm pretty sure it would be admissible in the US because it had been installed w/the husband's consent to begin with.)
Jon G.
May 1, 2015 at 8:38 AM
Who exactly does it does not matter too much (unless the lawyer did it without the wife's knowledge).
However, from what I remember, they installed an additional camera. And that one the husband did not know about.
Elle
May 1, 2015 at 11:23 AM
I think it is illegal to record ppl w/o their consent and knowledge--recall the head of BF Law Firm Bong In-Jae cited several laws that he was going to invoke to get back at her for using it and Jung-woo said she'd be violating all kinds of laws too if she used it. Even if by chance her actions weren't illegal as in they did not break any criminal codes, they were unethical and violated the rules of evidence which is grounds to suspend or disbar lawyers. That's basic facts any practicing attorney would know. She knew & she didn't care. So for me, the bottom line fact (as it pertains to her ultimately losing her license) is she had no one to blame but herself.
As for whether she played a part in his suicide, I think that is a matter of opinion. Yes, no one forced it upon him or made him do it, but I disagree on her having no part of it. Que sera sera I guess.
Jon G.
May 1, 2015 at 11:34 AM
"Even if by chance her actions weren’t illegal as in they did not break any criminal codes, they were unethical and violated the rules of evidence which is grounds to suspend or disbar lawyers."
No. Using illegally acquired evidence doesn't disbar lawyers. It might by morally wrong, but not wrong enough to put an occupational ban on a person (violating his/her fundamental rights in the process).
In fact, when she went to the husband to tell him about how evil his wife is, THAT is where she could and should lose her admission as a lawyer.
Elle
May 1, 2015 at 12:08 PM
I'd like to know in what jurisdiction using illegally obtained evidence wouldn't get you hauled before the Bar & suspended and/or disbarred. Knowingly & intentionally violating the rules of evidence is a big no no which is why the other attorney filed the complaint against her. Also, this is not a violation of "fundamental rights." There is no "fundamental right" to practice law. She will get called before the bar & have notice & opportunity to be heard though before she gets suspended/disbarred--which happened here. Recall the show mentioned she went before the Bar & didn't dispute her use of illegally obtained evidence.
Jon G.
May 2, 2015 at 2:51 AM
The Korean constitution guarantees freedom of occupation as a fundamental right, just like most other civilised countries (well, except the USA).
Disbarment is an occupational ban for her. Because that's pretty serious (forfeiting a fundamental right, no less), the rules for disbarment are rather strict. She needs to be convicted of a crime, for example.
The show tries to handwave this, of course; because of plot reasons.

"It’s just ironic that the person who filed the complaint wasn’t doing so b/c of her violations of the law, he just did it to retaliate b/c she outwitted him."
Yep, we get a bit more insight into the people who aggressively attacked her because of her actions as a lawyer. I still feel a bit angry with the writers (quite seriously, if a male lead jerk lawyer would have done something like that, nobody would have held him accountable for such a minor moral lapse), but not quite as much anymore.

I don't think she played a part in his suicide. She just went with the fake evidence she was provided by her client, the lying wife. When she realised the true colours of the wife she went to tell him personally. Plus, her employee sold her out to that spiteful lawyer from the other party.

She did a little bit more, AFAIR. She tried to make the tape legit, even though she knew she couldn't use it legally. The evidence (as far as the video is concerned) wasn't fake, it was just illegally acquired. The husband did indeed cheat on his wife. The fact that his wife WANTED him to cheat doesn't change that at all.

I agree, as far as the suicide is concerned. That guy committed suicide because he couldn't live with his own hypocrisy.
"But you made him realise his hypocrisy!" is not the kind of thing she needs to feel guilty about.
On the account of tinkering with the legality of evidence, things are a little bit more convoluted.
We are supposed to blame her, because she did something morally questionable. And she blamed her disbarment on the wrong guy. And she got abused by several other characters for it.
Then again, her current boss pointed out the hypocrisy of some of those attacks towards his father. She finally learned that she was ratted out by someone else. Not sure how she feels about that.

We have even fewer Finnish speaking library patrons than Korean speaking patrons (none, to be honest). :) We have TONS of Russian-speaking patrons. Apparently our seaside town is a big destination.
I'm dreading the yearly return of Grumpy Russian Guy who knows English but refuses to speak it (like shouting at me in Russian is going to accomplish anything, since I only know about three words in it - yes, no, & 'sorry'.)

they tend to refuse and yell, yes. they do it in our museum as well, sometimes. but most of the nazi type russians dont travel any more. I guess they are forbidden from it. and most speak either english or finnish (cause many live in Finland for better wages and less corruption). I know a bit more than yes and no, but when they speak in russian fast and use long complicated words I can´t even understand where the word breaks are

To whomever recommended The Lover: thank you, and I wish I hadn't started watching! The humor is so... What's the word? Lowbrow? I don't know if that's really what I'm thinking, but it'll have to suffice. It's such gutter humor that I find myself feeling guilty about laughing! The bromance! Everybody's favorite part. I don't want the boys to go full-gay because the "misunderstandings" are just too stupidly fun. Really? Who gets that sweaty moving furniture? But, teehee.

I finally gathered the courage to make my first post on dramabeans! I've always wanted to make a post but always freaked out at the last minute, so I decided that I was going to make my first post today!
What I've been watching this week....
School 2015: Really liked it so far, but I feel that it wont have that same realism that School 2013 had.... Maybe next week will change my mind...
HITTG: Loving it!! Seo Bom is rocking my world right now! Actually, almost everyone in that show is rocking my world right now...
Lets Eat 2: Tried watching the first episode, but I missed Lee Soo Kyung so bad and couldn't finish...
Angry Mom: Loving it!! Kim Hee Sun and Ji Soo are killing it!!
The Lover: I didn't watch this week's episode yet but I am waiting to see what happens in the necktie scene!
Exo Next Door: Not as cringe worthy as the other web dramas I've seen... Yes it is totally predictable but its still pretty cute...
Divorce Lawyers In Love: First two episodes didn't really hook me in... Im not sure if I'll continue watching...
One Warm Word: Its kind of slow, but its thought provoking... Oh and it has Park Seo Joon and Han Groo, which is always a plus!
Have a great day! ?

Add me to the list. I watched the first episode of Let's Eat 2, saw how they were going to drag out any explanation of the breakup (or, perhaps never explain), and tuned out afterwards. Showing two characters from season one discussing said breakup, and then talking about the reason in a way that the viewers can't hear it, is a really cheap shot, in my opinion, at those who liked the season 1 OTP. I would have been more likely to give season 2 a chance if they had just explained and moved on.

I felt the same for Lawyer Kim. I actually prefer the couple and the couple setting in LE2 . They seem more compatible, and their setting seems to be more natural. Oh, I remember you like Angel's Revenge. The second lead in LE2 is the main lead in AR. Kwon Yool( The second lead in LE") plays a rather different character in LE2

I actually like LE2 just as much as the first season, even on the romance front.
Yes, Season 1's romance was giddy and lovely when it happened, but I can still accept that Gu Dae-young and Soo-kyung could break up for basically having different life goals, because that actually happens in real life. And I really enjoy the new setting and neighbours, Seo Hyun-jin had big shoes to fill but I love the interactions between Soo-ji and Dae-young.

considering she engages in extreme disordered eating to punish herself for gaining weight, the lack of unreserved delight in her food actually fits her character. She can't just eat without feeling fat and guilty afterwards, or even without any consciousness of it while she's eating :/

Now, I dont want Goong or My Name Is Kim Sam Soon or Heartstrings or...(well, you get it!)

School 2015- I love it so far mostly because of Kim So-hyun, I mean come on she's still a month away from 16 and she's already pretty much a master of her craft that's just not fair, I think ultimately School will live or die in her very capable hands, no matter what the writer does.
SPOILERS ahead for those that haven't seen episode 2.
I think that rather than being bullied "wallet" girl has been stealing her mothers jewelry to sell and try to fit in with Eun-byul and her friends. Eun-byul found out and confiscated that necklace to keep "wallet" girl, sorry I don't remember her name, from selling it, then she disappeared.
For the record I don't think Eun-byul is dead, I'm not even convinced Eun-byul and Eun-bi are different people, maybe this is just a continuation of the multiple personality trend in dramaland with some schizophrenia thrown in.
Girl Who Sees Smells- I was so annoyed with our leads imaginations in episode 10, don't just imagine those things do them. The only other thing I want to say this week is about the end of episode 10, well f**ck guess chef knows now.
My Unfortunate Boyfriend- I really like it. The first time our female second lead sabotaged Ji-na I was willing to give her a pass as I assumed it was a one time thing as before and since she hadn't really done anything to make me hate her or annoyed with her. Now she's done it again and I'm annoyed with the writers.

After watching the second episode for school 2013 I actually have a different theory I believe they are twins. I just have a feeling that Eun-byul isn't as nice as most seem and she got herself involved in something and went missing in purpose. Also she only recently started giving similar stuff to Eun-bi so that she could take her place and probably take the fall for what she did. I'm not sure about wallet girl but the way people reacted to Eun-bi saying hello to everyone kind off indicates she was a bully who got away with it.
Sensory Couple - can't believe it ended like that!!!

They might be twins or they might not I'm not positive one way or the other yet.
I shared your theory of Eun-byul at first, but then I realized that that's very clearly what the drama wants us the viewers to think, I hate being told what to think so I started thinking of alternatives hence my theories above.

Am watching:
Smelly Girl -- Love and Hate relationship for me...mainly with the same complaints and love as what Beanies have written here.
Unkind Women -- This show is slowwwww. But I still really like it. I like the interactions between everyone, and that everyone is so, so flawed. My favorite is the "I hate you, oh but how I've grown to love you" relationship between mom and the 2nd woman. I love Soon Jae halbae because of Grandpas over flowers, so of course I can't totally hate dad and what he's done in the past...but I wouldn't care if he's no longer in the scene and just bring the 2nd woman under the same roof with the wife again. It's the back and forth conversations that make me laugh out loud, and they come so unexpected.
For me personally, this show teaches me one very important lesson, though: never forget to count my blessings, to be grateful. The show is chock full of people who only focus on what they don't have, what they could've had, etc and struggle through their own bitterness about life. It's quite saddening, but a terrific reminder for me.

Heard It Through the Grapevine - I still love it, but this drama needs to please not spend any more time with the ridiculous affair plotline. We all saw it coming almost from Day 1, and given that the whole show is character-driven rather than plot-driven, it was interesting at first to see it play out (and I root for Yeon-hee not tolerating her husband making an ass of himself in public over the only woman alive who's pettier and more childish than he is).
But I want them to wrap it and give us time with some other characters too. I'm glad In-sang got more screen time these eps, but I'd rather see little sis get a storyline than whiny Hyun-soo and her obnoxious smug mother (which, seriously, ENOUGH.)
I've yet to catch up with Let's Eat 2, which I've saved for the weekend (effect of late subs)
but I did squeeze in 15 minutes for the two episodes of Exo Next Door, which is flat-out cheesy but adorable. If this drama had one-hour episodes it would annoy me to death but the short length is perfect to keep me amused and wanting more. I love the heroine's little brother and his bromance with Sehun, and Baekhyun's trolling of Yeon-hee with the "script reading" opposite DO (his expression as he watched them, lmaoooo). And even Chanyeol, the hero of the piece, is starting to grow on me, he's really cute when he's jealous.
Also the latest cliffhanger is that the cutest of the boys just turned up just as they've decided that the heroine is crushing on him, lol. Hopefully he can act.

Grapevine
I thought the affair thing itself was already wrapped up before the last episode. All we see now is the aftermath, and that's mostly because if the intertwining with the Union lawsuit. The affair is a pretty big thing in the power game, and the aftershocks will still be felt for a while, but the affair itself didn't take away much screentime.
I also don't think it was more ridiculous than anything else that Lawyer Han does. (And, seriously, him yelling at his son for disrespecting Yeon-hee by accidently telling her about Han's affair, in front of Yeon-hee? That guy is just hilarious.)
I'm okay with Hyun-soo -- not everybody can be a perfect human being despite having terrible parents from hell -- and she is only used to nudge the plot (or In-sang) here and there.

Lawyer Han is hilarious in general, he's just so pompous and over the top in every way, especially when you consider his status and what he's supposed to be like as a public figure. But I think the affair and aftermath in general need a wrap soon, we've spent close on six episodes getting there and dealing with it.
and yeah, Hyun-soo is a plot device but I still end up feeling like we see way too much of her. I would much prefer it if Yi-ji got some screen time too, she's so underdeveloped and if Noori can get screen time as Bom's sister, I don't see why Yi-ji can't be an equally effective plot device.

I like Yi-ji. She and Bom's mother are the only characters that I like as human beings on this show (by using the ridiculously high moral standards that I learned to have when watching K-drama).
I don't WANT Yi-ji to get more screen time, because that would only mean she will suffer.
I mean look at her, now that she actually DOES get some screen time, she's already in tears (and understandably so, I mean, her parents really suck). Now she is used as a pawn at the front-lines by freaking Bom. Give that girl a break already. (Love you, Yi-ji, stay as far from the camera as you can.)

Finally started watching Heard it through the grapevine, it's fun,Intresting, stupid funny and I like how it's an ordinary story but not, my favorite character is the Dad 's hair Lol.
Unkind women feels like a weekend drama that's really slow, the misunderstanding between the lead couple was frustrating to watch, why don't people just talk instead of wallowing in stupid angst,Wish song jae rim had picked a better project.I only like the kicking halmoni and the seconds relationship.
Loving Falling for innocence and sensory couple cutenes, haven't watched this week's angry mom.
Divorce lawyer had potential for greatness but something is off, maybe production side because the acting is not bad, it feels like it's undercooked and over cooked at the same time.

Hello beanies!
I just checked if there's a sub for ep 8 of Let's Eat S2 but I want to cry now for there's still none and ep 7 sub is still incomplete :(
I'm just watching Angry Mom, Smells and Let's Eat S2.
Angry mom. They better not let Bok-dongie die!
Smells is cute. I like how their "relationship" developed and not really talking about it although not having proper label leads to misunderstanding of the "rights" that he has over Cho-rim. I didn't finish ep 9 yet.
Let's Eat S2. I love how Soo-ji learned to ride the bicycle. Thought it will be another usual scene when the heroine wants to learn to ride and I'm glad its not. Goodness! I am late because I just arrived from Sigulda, Latvia. Went to a "plant parade" aka flower fair, then visited Sigulda old castle, very pretty views on the ancient ice age valleys and Koiva river, and Turaida castle, recently modernized museum, very prettily exhibited and lots of chinese seniors
bought so much I think I am broke.
uh dramas. Angry Mom - please don´t tell me Bok Dongie will have amnesia and he goes back to being a bad boy! Please no! Let him wake up memories intact!
Smelly Girl - oh my gosh. what is going to happen. and how did she not see these volumes yet? and ... oh gosh. we got more cute to dunk us right into fear
that´s it, dropped Someone like you the taiwanese drama, cause too cheesy.
real life drama is right before the trip my mom got some timber on her foot and her big toae was all swollen, then I cheerily left half an hour early from work, got stuck in some sneaky hole in the submarine and bruised my leg on that steel edge. when I told this my co-workers they said it must run in the genes. but I didn´t qualify for piggybacking. well our guys are too scrawny for that anyway.

However, for me, that didn't happen here. Yes, the show spent a lot of time on affair-related activities, but most of that wasn't about the affair itself.
The way Lawyer Han tried to, err, "establish" his affair was VERY essentially needed to help us to understand his character better. It also developed the relationships with his underlings. Not to mention the plot drive it provided.
The affair itself is only a few minutes of screentime.
The aftermath of it, again, contributed a LOT of dynamics, especially to Yeon-hee and In-sang.
I read the argument that the affair reduces the impact/importance of Han's other vicious doings.
Why I like the Han Jung-ho character -- as one of the best written villains in any K-drama: He is a holistic villain. He's not that kind of tear-off calendar character.
He is not evil because he has to be a ruthless professional because of reasons, or because he has a dark and troubled past, or because he is a part-time psychopath. He is evil because he believes in what he does, he believes in his value system. He doesn't even know that he is a hilariously ridiculous hypocrite.

I think the affair was needed. It flowed naturally from Jong-ho's spite. And the spite flowed from her daughter losing In Sang to Bom.
The affair also shows how incredibly adolescent and immature CEO Han is. He has spent his entire life belittling the lower class as animals who don't understand manners and who lack proper breeding. And in his first spiritual test, he was more than an animal. He needed to see that, but he didn't see himself yet. His ego is pretty resilient, as is his hypocrisy.
We also needed to see how the Han household resorts to the only thing they know: old-fashioned ideas, the importance of externals, utter lack of introspection and self-questioning. They dig their heels in and return to the only life philosophy they understand..instead of growing with the world and interacting with the world.
All that said, the affair came and went very quickly. Much quicker than most kdrama affairs. And that little fly in the ointment has caused a pretty big stink.

Beautifully put and so true! CEO Han and his wife are the type of people who stand passively at a door and expect it to open and their shoes to appear on their feet as if by magic. Even his early sex life seems to have been managed by his mother when she provided beautiful young women to tutor him in various subjects. They are so removed from the real world as to be ripe for manipulation by their so-called underlings and they are being manipulated big time.
Although the sister hasn't had a lot of screen time yet, she plays a pivotal role and I don't see her either as a victim or as a device to further Bom's agenda at all. As part of the plan to reinstate old discipline and household philosophy they order her to lose 10 kilos. She stands up at the breakfast table, declares "you're not the boss of me!", and "everybody's going to hear about how unfair my parents are" and storms out the door. What parent of teenagers hasn't heard a variation of this more than once? This is a fight the Hans aren't going to win. For one thing, the children own the the family home for tax purposes.
I suspect CEO Han is going be facing serious jail time before this is all over. There is suppression and manipulation of evidence, conflict of interest and tax fraud, just off the top of my head. Also Mrs Han might be up on insider trading charges as well as her husband. Where has this "investment club" been getting all their hot stock tips anyway?

Hi! I'm stopping by late, but just wanted to see what people are watching, their comments, and what's new!
Grapevine continues to be my favorite kdrama - but I agree with some of the comments here, enough of the affair.
Also watching My unfortunate Boyfriend which gets better each episode. I look forward to the complexity of Mr. Seed's personality and (my guess) trauma, something to do with being stuck in the cassette tape-player decade...
EXO Next Door (14 min episodes) and Wook's Cooking Odyssey (7 min eps) are are both shorter shows that I'm liking, to my surprise. Younhee's brother is a riot!
I am wrapping up recapping Blood (yes, I know it ended, but i still have 19 and 20 to recap). I've managed not to collide with spoilers so far. Although the medical, melodrama, romance, vampire combination of genres is the Swiss Cheese of kdramas, it somehow is enjoys an off-the-charts popularity worldwide. The number of views and countries on my blog are astounding to me, and provide a major adrenaline rush! So fun. Click on owl to check it out.
And finally, mother what a lover you wore me out. Here's a blast from the past that should be the OST for The Lover.
Rod Stewart's Maggie May, oh yeah!

Hey everybody...happy OT!
Didn't expect to make it on the OT this week...considering I've been absent for the past few weeks, again because of the load of schoolwork. I mean, as much as I love to write -- I'm actually brain fatigued from reading stacks of research and writing up papers on a daily basis -.- It's the final stretch now, with final term papers being written...only to be dealt with the immense mindblower of a week. The protests that exploded into full out rioting? That's been happening right near my campus...and it's been absolutely surreal. Never thought I'd see rioting right before my eyes -- seeing young people throwing rocks at police officers, vanadalizing stores, looting -- good gosh. It was absolute chaos, which unfolded even further that night. It's just put everything on hold -- classes cancelled, the term papers and presentations postponed. There's still the possibility of not having classes next week, if the protesting relents...which would be good to have additional time to fine tune my papers, but it throws everything off track and I want to finish this semester! -.-
My opinion on the situation: violence does not solve violence, neither does destroying your own community to "show" your anger...you're only screwing yourself and your community over in the end. It's gonna take time to rebuild, but sadly, I don't think this chaos will be over anytime soon. My two cents on the case that ignited this all? That's for another day because I'd run out of characters/space in this post!
I actually had the chance to catch some dramas this week, due to not being on campus.
Angry Mom: Bok-dongie better not die, ya heard?! I've been meaning to catch this for a while but I finally got to it. It's still mind boggling how this is Ji Soo's first drama...I tuned in to see mom & daughter but got bowled over by him!
Unkind Women: The storyline lost its steam, once Dad was found and back with the family...now it's focused on weird looking "I'm the successor" lady who is constantly getting irate over feeling inferior to Hyun-sook's cooking skills (I'd like to call it born talent). I feel Song Jae-rim is wasted here with being shoved into the love triangle with hyung Doo-jin and Ma-ri...and his idiot of a mom who continues to front like she's the best teacher. When she gets her due, it's not looking likely.
Also caught bits of Heard It Through the Grapevine and the new weekender following Rosy Lovers (forgot the name).
Have a great weekend, yall!! :)
