Gong Yoo, Song Kang-ho headline occupation-era thriller
by girlfriday
Director Kim Jee-woon (I Saw the Devil, The Good, the Bad, the Weird) is back with a new action movie, a period piece set during the Japanese occupation called Secret Agent. It’s no surprise that he went straight to Song Kang-ho (The Attorney) to reunite for what will be their fourth collaboration since 1998’s Quiet Family. Song has signed on to star, and now Gong Yoo (The Suspect) is in contract negotiations to join them.
The film is being co-produced by withUs Film (The Attorney) and Warner Brothers, and tells the story of a group of heroic independence fighters who form a secret agency during the Japanese occupation. Director Kim Jee-woon is penning the script, and I should’ve expected a twist, coming from him: It’s about an independence fighter and a Japanese spy becoming friends. So… like occupation-era JSA?
It looks like it’ll be a long (looooong) while before Gong Yoo makes his way back to dramaland; he’s got his zombie movie Busan Line and the sweeping melodrama A Man and a Woman with Jeon Do-yeon up first, then if he signs on to this one that’ll be the year. I want to say, “Come baaaack,” but really, who’s going to say no to Kim Jee-woon and Song Kang-ho? Nobody with a brain.
Secret Agent is planning to start shoots later this year.

Oh my goodness, you spoke my mind!!!
This whole entire time whenever casting news came out for the "In Time With You" remake, I always scratching my head, being all fidgety, and trying to pinpoint and put my finger on who would be best to be paired up with Ha Ji Won for it XD And now that it has been put into words, a lightbulb in my head just went off and realized that at the back of my mind, it was always Gong Yoo that I had wished she would be paired with T.T But alas, that's not happening

i was also thinking the same thing i was rallying for him for in time qith uou until theu officially announced lee jin wooK. But then again, he jas busan bound, yhen he will work wirh jeon do yeon and if he signs on he will be working with song kangho-kim jiwoon. I'd say that after a disaster drama like Big, getting with movie projects gives me a big sigh of relief cause he is getting better materials for movie rojects.
i just wish he would not be like kang dong won, lee jungjae, jung woosung, ha jung woo and the likes who has completely stayed in movies over the past few years. I really want him in dramaland....

You're not people's mind reader, are you? :) If only...the pair would be perfect. Then, let's just wait and see how the drama would be like...

I want to see Gong Yoo but Kim Ji-Woon is one of the best directors in the world to me, my current fav director. He does quality korean films, hardcore, action, thrillers genre too.
No drama can compete with the best consistently great Korean director. I was drawn in to K-dramas to the golden age of Korean cinema that was in 2002-2004 films.

I want him back in dramaland so badly, but, like everyone, I'm glad to see him doing so well in film. Hopefully we can see him back in 2016/2017. Just happy to hear news of him at all :)

Like the rest of you, I would like my ILU for 16+ hrs on my screen. But, if he is doing well in his film career vs The Big mistake/ turkey, then SIGH, I will wait.

I kind of still haven't forgiven the Hong Sisters for Big, if only because I'm afraid Gong Yoo will never come back to dramaland :(

I am currently re-watching Coffee Prince (am now on Ep14), so when I saw Gong Yoo's face on this page, I literally screamed (ok, half-screamed) and swooned (I kid you not). I miss this marvelously talented manly man.
I don't mind him acting on the big screen rather than the small version IF they are released in theaters in Toronto, Canada!! or at least available on the internet. Just... please, please let me watch my Gong Yoo....

If you haven't already - check out GY on "Running Man" (back in 2013), he really is charming and seems so good-natured (and even when he and Jung Yumi and others just happened to be sitting around a table outdoors when RM happened to pass by (ep243).

No one in their right mind who can have a good movie career would do drama unless they wanted the extra exposure, extra money or just liked doing it for whatever reason, despite the bad filming conditions and suffering art.
So while I would love to see him back in drama, I think he should stick to movies until his career there becomes... big (taboo word, but I had to) and stable. People took him seriously as more than a heartthrob, especially after 'Silenced', so it's his time to show Chungmuro what he is capable of outside of the scope of his rom-com fueled "oppanness".

"… big (taboo word, but I had to)"
ROFL! We've been scarred for life by that thing. In my head, I'm filing it under the "if we don't talk about it we can pretend in never happened" folder.
This being said, I agree with everything else. It's a bit frustrating for us drama-viewers but it's the best thing that can happen to him.

Actor is actor whether it's drama, movie, musical and so on. Why we should discriminate among them. There are many k-drama actors who's rarely seen in movie such as So Ji Sub, Jo In Sung, Ha Ji Won. And there are popular actors rarely seen in dramas ex, Kang Dong Won. And also there are actors who's actively in both drama and movie. It's not only about money and popularity though. They must have reasons for choosing dramas instead of movies, vice versa.

Many top actors/actresses (not the matinee idol type) stick to film unless they get a really well written script for a drama series and/or work w/ a really good director/production team.
And those who are popular CF models will do a drama every now and then if it has the potential to be a big hit, including overseas.
YFAS as done more for JJH and KSH's CF rates than the film "The Thieves", esp. overseas.
GY is about as "big" as one can get in the Korean entertainment industry and has some recognition/popularity overseas based on the continued fondness for CP.
But if he wants to get to next level of popularity overseas, will need another drama hit, but that Hong sisters fiasco probably has scarred him on TV dramas for a while.
