First script read for Scholar Who Walks the Night

Script reads usually aren’t that exciting, save for the fact that in this instance, there was a time just last month when I was convinced this show would never finish casting and get to this point. I mean, there’s casting drama and then there’s Scholar Who Walks the Night. But hey, we’re here now, and maybe we can start focusing on the important stuff. Yunno, like… when will we get to see Lee Jun-ki’s mane of glory?
The manhwa adaptation is a fusion fantasy drama set in Joseon, and is the love story between a vampire scholar and a young woman who dresses as a man to sell books. Lee Jun-ki (Joseon Gunman) will play the eternally beautiful (how appropriate) vampire scholar shrouded in mystery, while Lee Yubi (Pinocchio) has been cast as the crossdressing heroine.
Kim So-eun (Liar Game) plays two characters in the drama, in two different timelines — one is the hero’s betrothed who puts her life on the line to save the man she loves when he turns into a vampire, and the other is a cold young lady who never lets anyone see how she’s really feeling. I guess there’s no such thing as a doppelgänger who isn’t a specter of a first love in dramaland, is there?
Bringing the action is Lee Soo-hyuk (Valid Love), a vampire described as evil incarnate. He bewitches people with his perfect beauty (really, like literally? Because that’s both apt and hilarious), and holds the human world in the palm of his hand. He’ll be the hero’s greatest foe, and his character promises heart-stopping thrills.
Changmin (Mimi) plays the crown prince, and Jang Hee-jin (Thrice Married Woman) will be a gisaeng who faithfully helps Lee Jun-ki. But as her one-sided crush on the hero deepens, she longs to become a vampire herself. I’m sure the young and beautiful forever part isn’t exactly a deterrent either. I kind of feel vampired out lately, but if anyone’s going to blow all the undead competition out of the water, it’s Lee Jun-ki, right? *waits impatiently for mane of glory*

Well, I can't help but think that this drama will be compared to Yeo Jin Goo's Orange Marmalade, although the genre and timeline is so different. (that kid will be the death of me seriously)
Can't help to see LJK in action again though hehe

I was thinking the same thing. The mane of glory will be neatly tucked away under that noble hat, which is a drag really, I (almost) always prefer the mane of glory over that hat thingy. Though in this case, if he´d be releasing his Rapunzel hair, it´ll be quite a la Gong Gil, as you said, so...whaa, suddenly it seems such a hard decision.

Personally I thought Lee Jun Ki in the magistrate's hat was one of the sexiest things I've ever seen in a kdrama. Seeing him in a hat is one of the main reasons I'm excited he's doing another saeguk.

As much as I'd like Kim So Eun as the leading lady (yes, you detect a kse's fan here), I cannot be more excited than to see her playing those characters. I might have heard such character in, like, several dramas but to see her playing something new to her is what I'd prefer to see than her taking some other candy girl ever again. And Lee Yu Bi is a decent actress either, just a bit cannot unsee that she and Junki seem more like siblings to me. They look alike in my eyes, is it only me, right? Well, never imagine seeing KSE and Junki's reunion after Fly Daddy Flyyyyyyyy. Gonna rewatch that movie ??

I was quite disappointed when it got announced that KSE will not be playing the female lead but seeing the character description now makes me happy. This character looks like it would suit her and is interesting. OMG, is that her in Fly Daddy Fly? I haven't seen that movie in forever so I already forgot.

I never imagine to see them reuniting as costar with loveline, though. But the idea is not really bad either.

In all honesty this plot sounds retarded and then you remember this is kdrama land and that this is the same one trick pony story except they add a vampire and saguek robes **oohhhh That makes it different!* *rolls eyes*
We are not even going to start with this incompetent cast. Maybe two of them will do a decent job if they feel like it and the rest will do their sappy puppy eye stare in the distance or their 'cold mask of indifference' to try and hide the fact that they can't act for shit. I'm just so disappointed with all the crap coming out lately. I'll try "The Producers". Maybe it won't suck.

I'll give it a shot for Lee Jun-ki, Yoobi and KSE. Hopefully I'll stick around longer than Joseon Gunman.

I'm with you on that one.
I'm very nervous of this writer, the original manhwa was kind of fluff to begin with but I rather hope that a sageuk with (mostly) competent actors will be a bit better written than some idol vehicle commissioned by Satan's Maw Entertainment for fanservice.
(I dub them that after hearing of some of the circumstances that caused six of their artists to file lawsuits against them in a span of five years)

Quite leaving aside your use of a nasty slur I thought it wasn't ok to say in a civilised comment section, I'm not sure who in the cast you're complaining about. With the exception of Changmin (i.e. one person) they've all proven themselves as competent actors.

yess! saw this on MBC Facebook page already and I am so exited. Go, Teacher!!! I am also glad Soo Hyuk is in it, I hope he can overturn the sort of typecasting by giving a refreshing angle on the evil vampire.
I recently watched Ninja Teachers´ stint to Healing Camp, it was some time ago I guess, but I hadn´t seen it. and wow, first of all, dat horse ride. it would have been even more perfect with sageuk clothes only.
second, he is definitely a soul mate. if I were korean, I would think he is some lost brother of mine. that goofing around on the set and causing trouble every 10 minutes he mentioned on Healing Camp, and people expecting you to do funny things and entertain them even when you just want to lay low and be quiet, you need to get up again and tell them a story or make faces or comment on bystanders etc,. and how with ease he speaks of his hardships and how self-critical he is about his past self (without hesitation just laying it all out, I do that too and sometimes it can shock people, you know). anyway, great watching.

So excited for this show!!! I'm not gonna go into it with high expectations like I did w/ Joseon Gunman.... I'm still anxious to see Lee Jun Ki back in dramaland though.
I really wanted Kim So Eun to be the lead, but her role sounds interesting and challenging.
I've got nothing against Lee Yubi; I just haven't seen her in anything.
July feels so far away right now, even though I'm super behind on all my other dramas.

But seriously, I hope to god this one has a solid script and does not feature any of the following:
1. Really low-rent looking special effects.
2. Fantasy/supernatural story that basically keeps getting rules pulled out of the writer's behind as the episodes go on, with no explanation or foreshadowing. Worldbuilding is important!
3. Oppa overacting (I love LJK but I wish to god more PDs could rein him in sometimes, it makes for a great performance)
(it's too much to hope for the heroine not to be a damsel in distress, or no noble idiocy etc etc, but I will start small)

Agree! I've enjoyed his performances ever since I saw him in The King and The Clown/ The King's Clown. He does overact sometimes so PD-nim, please remind him to tone it down when necessary!

I agree with everything. he is a wild horse and needs to be held back. actually he is a mix-breed between a wild horse and a monkey, in the best way (you know how in chinese mythology animals are people...)
I don´t really need ANY special effects. it could be more of an insight into the minds of the characters with some tragi-comical underline. if only the writer would realize that the funniest things can have the most serious message...
I also hope that they use textiles right. no machine knits, please! I will throw something at the screen if they do that.

Don't know about the descriptor of "perfect beauty" for Lee Soo-hyuk - more like a bit weird-looking, androgynous type of look, but that's nearly perfect for playing a vamp (in addition to his extreme paleness).
Always was fond of Jang Hee-jin since her X-Man days but she never had that break-out role/show - maybe this will be it for her.

I'm hoping for a cameo from Song Jae Rim, given his drama/WGM connections to both Lee Junki and Kim So Eun. Maybe he can play a vampire hunter with an unrequited crush on KSE's character (the first love version?) and starts out blaming Junki's character for her death, so he tries to hunt him but later ends up becoming buddies with him and fighting LSH's evil vampire together? Like "Two Weeks in Joseon, the Sequel"?

I'm still waiting for a good Jun Ki drama to watch since his service. Two Weeks was alright but the rest left me in the cold. But hey I don't exactly blame him because there were just so few good productions nowadays compared to a few years back.
I'll still catch this though. Lee Soo Hyuk is a push and Li Yubi is not a turn off.
