Guns blazing and plots in motion for period action movie Assassination

Ha Jung-woo, Jeon Ji-hyun, and Lee Jung-jae as a trio of badasses? By now those things are just a given considering their track record (Ha: Kundo, The Terror Live; Jeon: You From Another Star, The Thieves; Lee: Face Reader, New World), but that doesn’t make their new period action film Assassination look any less fun. (Also, it’s nice to see that the Gaksital set is still getting work.)

The movie has its official poster out and a trailer to go with it, which outlines the plot for us: It’s 1933 during the Japanese Occupation years, and the three leads are brought together as a team as an assassination plot unfolds. Ha Jung-woo plays a contract killer, Jeon Ji-hyun is a sharpshooter and member of the independence army, and Lee Jung-jae is an employee of the provisional government. Set in both Shanghai and Gyeongseong (former Seoul), the movie traces “the different choices and fates of these peope, who have no country, no name, and no forgiveness.”

The trailer looks like a fast-paced, explosion-filled action extravaganza, and with director Choi Dong-hoon of The Thieves in charge, I expect a summer popcorn blockbuster. Sure, The Thieves had a paper-thin plot, but I found it totally entertaining in a mindless way, and I’ll take any chance to watch Jeon Ji-hyun kicking ass and taking names. (The boys aren’t too shabby either.)

The cast of Assassination includes reliable supporting leads Oh Dal-soo (The Pirates) and Jo Jin-woong (A Hard Day); the movie will release in July.

You wanna know what I like the most about Jun Ji Hyun? She might be not the greatest actress in Korea, but she never used her beauty as an object. I never seen her revealing skin or explicit s*x scenes for attracting people to watch her like some actresses.

I can't name any Korean actress who does show skin. The top actresses usually avoid it if they can.

but the real point that makes me respect Jun Ji Hyun is that she has never used her beauty as an excuse or compensation for bad or mediocre acting skills, which is a thing many actresses/would be actresses and actors do when they lack the talent but fit Korean beauty standards. She is a really good actress even from a young age.

Jun ji hyun will never come close to Jeon do yeon level when it comes to acting that requires depth and sophistication. That is she has only got offers for sassy or kicking ass roles so far. Sadly, she would never dare play sex scenes simply because she has no b**bs at all.

Won Bin can come to Song kangho level if he is devoted to his career instead of going on such a hiatus.

0

@queenbee - that comment about no boobs is just so lacking in class.

And JJH did work with Ha Jung Woo in te Berlin File, where her character was a muted, introvert one. And she did quite well too, she doesn't only play sassy or kickass roles like you claim even if she is not as great as Jeon Do Yeon.

0

@nate
Song Ji Hye has never been a top actress. She's not even good, just decent at most. on the contrary, Jeon Ji Hyun is one of the top K-actresses whom I admire.

0

JDY is widely recognized as one of the best actresses, if not the best actress in Korea (so she does more "artsy" fare which can involve nudity).

SJH is not regarded as top actress (either in acting skill or can carry a film or TV series).

BDN, while respected as an actress, can't carry a project.

Top actresses (by that being known for their beauty and hence, big demand for CFs and can usually carry a project - range of acting skills varies) - not an exhaustive list.

Shin Min-a
Kim Tae-hee
Song Hye-gyo
Han Hyo-joo
Jung Yumi (even despite being an artsy/indie fare queen)
Ha Ji-won
Kim Ha-neul
Soo Ae
Son Ye-jin
Yoon Eun-hye

Moon Geun-young - as a child star, MGY might have been the biggest, being able to carry films to huge box office.

Then there are the one's a little below -

Han Ga-in (just for CFs, she might be w/ the 1st group)
Han Hye-jin
Han Ji-hye
Han Ji-min
Han Ye-seul
Kang So-ra
Lee Yeon-hee
Moon Chae-won
Sung Yuri
Yoon So-yi

As far as I know, none have done nudity.

Don't think Im Soo-jung has done either, but she does a lot more artsy/indie fare, so not having seen everything that she has done, can't say w/ any degree of certainty.

Gong Hyo-jin has done some but she has done more artsy/indie fare and isn't regarded as a "beauty" like the others (not that she isn't attractive in her own way); same goes for Kang Hye-jung.

Required fields are marked *

I don't see how you can praise some actresses for being beautiful and playing that up whilst shaming others for having/working for great bodies and using them for a role. There is nothing wrong with revealing skin for a role, in fact there are probably a lot of roles that require sex scenes for the script or to do the story justice.

Actresses out there including Jeon Ji Hyun are all using their looks to some degree, after all acting is largely visual. Some actresses just have different boundaries.

Exactly, it just shows how immature that commenter is, thinking all onscreen nudity/sex scenes have no artistic purpose at all, or are only for salacious purposes.

Cinema is a visual medium but there's a huge difference between the 'stand there and find a good angle so you look pretty' style of acting some "actors" adopt, and the sex scenes in The Concubine or Eun-gyo. The latter actually require skill on the part of the actors.

0

LOL, did showing skin make Tang Wei or Jeon Do Yeon bad actresses, who use their bodies to become famous? Did having Tang Wei and others nude make Ang Lee and others bad directors?

Everyone has different career path. You can respect JJH for what she does, but shouldnt shaming others for playing the roles which need to show skin.

As Prime Minister Abe of Japan is about to begin his tour of US amid all the controversies and intrigues, a film might go a long way to humanize both sides of a conflict and sort out a complicated issue for the mass. War and Peace did that for the 1812 War and Gone with the Wind, the novel, did just that for the Civil War.

But this film may not be the one to do that. Its posters, quite unfortunately, remind me of its failed predecessors, like Bbasketball and Age of Inspiration. Well, keep trying and you might just succeed someday.

Seriously, have the Japanese ever comes to terms with their war crimes like the Germans? I heard most young Japanese think of themselves as victims rather than criminals of WWII.

0

Required fields are marked *

It varies largely. Different schools teach different things, different textbooks say different things about the war. I know Japanese people who have learned about the atrocities committed and recognize it, but I also know Japanese people who hardly learned at all about the involvement of Japan in WWII outside of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I think it's somewhat comparable to what people in the US learn about Christopher Columbus (and the history of white men and Native Americans in general). My parents were taught that he was a hero. On the other hand, my quite liberal high school US history teacher painted him as a murderer and definitely not a hero.

There are times when I think things are looking up, both in general society and among government officials, but, sadly, every step forward seems to soon be followed by a step back, especially in government.

It amazes me how all the fangirling & the praise go to Jun Ji Hyun while the real draw to the movie are Ha Jung Woo & Lee Jung Jea
I know for a fact that HJW is considered one of the top 3 of Korean actors alongside Kang Song Ho & Choi Min Shik & LJJ also is doing great but it feels like JJH is the much talked about among fans outside Korea

Not to minimize her or anything, she's a okey actress but it really frustrated me how in HJW's last movie all the fans kept talking like it was Ha Ji Won's movie & almost ignored HJW & labelled him as "The ajussi who acted with Ha Ji Won"!! & here it comes again

Sorry, if you feel that way, then this movie might not be for you. Director Choi Dong Hoon has said in a previous interview he wrote Assassination with JJH in mind. Also, a recent article in the East Asia Daily said that JJH was going to get top billing. It also said that she was going to carry the burden of the whether or not the movie is a success because her character is featured heavily in the movie. There have been articles about this summer being the year of Korean actresses taking on the leads in action movies which were traditionally given to men - JJH in Assassination and Jeon Do Yeon in Memories of the Sword. Go, girl power!

Obviousely you are a JJH fan, good for you, but I wouldn't diminish all the cast & crew's hard work & base the success (or the failure) of the movie on one person, no matter how valuable he is
You hadn't seen the movie, as far as I know nobody did, so I think it's fair to say that stating that a charachter is heavily featured is a long shot
HJW & LJJ both have so many great movies & performances under their belts, in fact, all of HJW's body of work is successufl either in box office of critically, so you can imagine how inaccurate would be to say that JJH is the real draw to the movie
one more tiny piece of information, if JJH is going to get the top billing, HJW already did
All the best to the cast & crew, the movie does seem real fun, I expected heavier stuff when I first heard about it

In this movie, I pay more attention to JJH than Ha Jung Woo. I'm a long time fan of hers.
From my observations, there is still male domination and sexism in Kdramas and Korean acting industry overall.Tthe male leading actors are more popular, make more money, and have a bigger fanbase than the actresses. Kdrama audience are mostly female. I've heard many people (the fan girls) say "a lot of K-actresses are bad/mediocre"..."the actresses suck at acting, but most of the leading actors are good"...

0

Jun Ji Hyun is a top actress with strong public recognition. She has a good amount of fans but still, she cannot compete with the male actors' really big fanbase filled with crazy diehard fangirls.

0

ikr, korea actors' & male idols' international fandom overall is really massive and insane. a lot of the Kdrama & K-movie leading men always get more attention and got larger fandom than the leading ladies. fangirls' obsession over the guys rlly scare me.

0

It may have been written w/ JJH in mind and she definitely is the biggest box office draw, but acting-wise, she pales in comparison to HJW.

And I say this as a huge JJH fan; she a good enough actress, but can't say she has ever blown me away with her acting.

There's a reason why JJH is a CF queen (her best work has been in CFs).

So really, it's not any offense that others recognize the acting of co-stars who don't get the same attention/recognition since they aren't screen sirens or matinee idols.

I know how you feel but internationally but commercial wise JJH is more popular. But its kinda a fact of korean entertainment that HJW is the actor to see or more like bankable star with big guns of great acting chops. Its kind understadable why he is not know as know internationally, he does not do dramas and he looks like you usual korean ahjusshi rather than the handsome korean men that usual girls fangirls. But i think in korea, everyone from high schooler to their granfather who HJW is. He makes 2-3 great movies a year and mkst are always sucessful in the box office or in the award ceremonies...

but Chronicles of a blood merchant was also known as his 2nd directorial debut, but i guess most tranlations and interternational fans are just about his

(It's so obvious. Hehe)

0

@carlo She did a fantastic job playing herself :p. She is smart for picking roles that she is comfortable with and she does it well. I hope one day she'll step out of her comfort zone and do a sageuk.

0

Well, we are mostly K- drama fans and few of us are into k-movies or both. HJW and LJJ are movie actors and most drama fans are not familiar with them like they do with JJH.

I totally understand why she is getting a lot of praise compared to the leading men. She is not be the best actress in Korea but she did a hell of job in YWCFTS and I have to give her credit for the success of that drama. Good on her for coming back to dramaland. She gained more fans after YWCFTS.

We all know how great and popular HJW and LJJ are. But is it really impossible to give the spotlight to JJH this time? Korean actresses usually get less recognition after their hit projects compare to their male leads. JJH is also one of those actresses. In her hit drama MLFAS, though she gained a lot of popularity throughout Asia, Kim Soo Hyun enjoyed much more popularity compared to what JJH is getting nowadays. I'm not underestimating KSH but in that drama JJH has been the life of the show throughout the whole 21 episodes. But because of those fan girls obsessing over KSH, he is getting more of the credits.

Never understood why people get so annoyed why people more exposed to the drama community are more talked about. It comes naturally.
For once, a woman in a star studded cast (filled with exceptionally [known] great male actors) is the one that gets the spotlight. I'm not even a diehard feminist but surely this rarely ever happens, esp in south Korea. Whatever happens, I'm glad jun ji hyun is one of those ladies that can hold her own against the heavy weight ha Jung woo and Lee Jung jae. I say good for her that the attention/draw is on her.
Everyone in south Korea knows hjw and ljj are one of the top of a list actors and they have awards and movies to back it up. Doesn't diminish their performances any less. And if jjh can bring that drama fan base or that international fan base, then that's a positive thing commercial wise for the production team, while bringing exposure to their favorite oppas. Just sit back and enjoy all their performances.

JJH 's acting is just okay to me. Imo, sassy roles are what really works for het. I feel she's not quite versatile and totally overrated. It just amazing though how her popularity shoot up after YAFS and has not diminish yet. She chose the right drama and partner. KSH may not be a great actor but he's so loved by many. I actually think if it was some other actor pairing with her, the drama may not be as popular despite the role really suited her.

So, was it JJH's fault to get recognized? Tell Song Hye Kyo and Choi Ji Woo to get more projects and make them a hit so that they can also enjoy the popularity JJH is enjoying. JJH worked hard for her crafts. She deserves whatever she's getting right now. Overrated is like when someone is getting all the praises when she is good in nothing. JJH is a versatile and very good actress. Her beauty is just a plus. Don't get to intimidated with that. Don't get stuck with the same mindset that just because she's beautiful she's nothing but just a beauty. JJH have many fans and don't question why because her fans can see her worth and capabilities while others were trying to pick something negative about her just because she's not their bias.

And I think KSH won't be as popular as he is right now if JJH was not his partner in MLFAS. Don't look only at one side. It's not very hard to give someone a credit if she's worth getting some. And it also amazed me how KSH was getting all the credit when JJH has been the life of that show from start to finish. Fan girls sure know a lot to depend their idols to the point of bringing other actors down. We can just say that they both contributed an equal share that's why the show was a big success.
