Girl Who Sees Smells: Episode 5
by LollyPip
Unrequited crushes suck — but never so much as when the guy you like not only doesn’t notice you, but literally can’t like you back. But who can resist a man who loved his little sister so much that he actually lost all ability to feel anything when he lost her? Certainly not Cho-rim, and though she tries to keep her emotional distance from Mu-gak, another murder case throws them together again and possibly brings the two even closer.
EPISODE 5 RECAP
After seeing Mu-gak and Lieutenant Yeom together in the restaurant looking relaxed and smiling at each other, Cho-rim jumps to the wrong conclusion and leaves disappointed. As she walks, she sees herself in a shop window and wipes off her lip gloss. She goes home to get in her raggedy clothes, and laughs a little too hard at the TV while eating ramyun.
A call from Mu-gak perks her up, especially when he says he’s waiting right outside for her. Hilariously, he gives her the once-over when she arrives in a cute little dress, and just complains about how long it took her to come out. Cho-rim cutely pretends to be annoyed when Mu-gak says he’s here to practice, but her tiny smiles give her away.
They go for fried chicken and practice their skit right in the restaurant, and wow, those CHUUUURRRRRs are getting louder and longer! Mu-gak is getting even better acting-wise, though the looks from the other customers embarrass him when he notices. HAHA, one of the other patrons even pays their bill, taking their skit as a real conversation and leaving a message for Mu-gak that the country is a nice place to live.
In the morning, Detective Tak is officially arrested for his part in concealing the murder of the gym employee and making it look like a Barcode murder. He sincerely apologizes to his team, and there’s not a dry eye in the place. He particularly thanks Mu-gak, saying he enjoyed working with him, and offering a (handcuffed) hand to shake. In a sweet gesture, Mu-gak shakes his hand and replaces the cloth over Tak’s cuffs to protect his dignity.
Lieutenant Yeom is all business, declaring the murder closed and reminding everyone that it was only a copycat of the Barcode murders. She orders the team not to be distracted, and to concentrate on the evidence in Ma-ri’s murder. Poor Detective Kang grinds his teeth and reminds himself just to make it to retirement, hee.
Detective Ki takes Detective Yeh and Mu-gak out to lunch at a new restaurant in his new car, but his fussing over whether it will get dinged in the parking lot drives Mu-gak out of the backseat. The second he gets out, a man’s body lands right on the hood of the car, and Mu-gak looks up to see Chef Jae-hee looking down from the roof. Uh-oh.
Ten minutes ago.
Chef Jae-hee welcomes patrons to the new restaurant, including Cho-rim who he’s invited especially. He overhears complaints that the food is taking too long so he checks the kitchen, and is told the owner, Chef Hong, went to the rooftop for supplies and hasn’t come back yet.
Jae-hee heads to the roof, where he’s just in time to gape as Chef Hong goes over the railing. Jae-hee does lean over the railing to look down just as Mu-gak looks up, but he was nowhere near the man when he jumped (fell?).
Jae-hee runs back to the door but now it’s mysteriously locked, and he’s stuck until Mu-gak and his team find him there and arrest him. They escort him out and past Cho-rim, and ask Jae-hee to quickly identify the dad man on Ki’s car. He confirms that it’s the owner of the new restaurant, Chef Hong, who worked for Jae-hee and left to open this place.
Watching all this from the sidelines, Cho-rim notices traces of a green leafy scent on the dead man’s neck. She’d seen Jae-hee’s hands and there was no scent on them, but she notices the man walking away, trailing the same green leafy scent from his hands. Gotcha.
Mu-gak and Detective Yeh observe Jae-hee through the one-way glass but Mu-gak is interrupted by a text from Cho-rim. They meet and she tells him that the herbs Chef Hong grew on the roof didn’t have that same green leafy scent that was on his neck — it was a very strong odor, and she saw it on the hands of the retreating man.
Mu-gak counters that he saw Jae-hee looking down from the roof after the chef fell, sparking an argument. He swears Jae-hee must be guilty since he was the only one on the roof, but Cho-rim counters that he had no scent at all on his hands, so there’s no way he killed the chef. Mu-gak feels his evidence is clear, and orders Cho-rim to step back from this one.
When Mu-gak interrogates Jae-hee, he brings him a drink from Cho-rim and tells him that she’s sure he’s innocent. He informs Jae-hee that they’ll be investigating his home, and that if they don’t find anything they can’t arrest him.
He also says that Cho-rim is worried about his dog Moong-chi, so Jae-hee sends Cho-rim to his place to get the little dog until he gets out of jail. While she’s there she notices Ma-ri’s signature scent on a box of wine, but since she was Jae-hee’s girlfriend, Cho-rim doesn’t think much of it.
She runs into Baek-kyung outside, who keeps things short but does give Cho-rim a strange look as she leaves. Jae-hee had asked Baek-kyung a favor, and requested that he remove some embarrassing financial papers from his home. When Baek-kyung goes into Jae-hee’s house, he goes straight for the wine boxes and takes the middle one, the one with Ma-ri’s scent on it, which Jae-hee claimed holds his papers.
The detectives go over the evidence, pointing out that Ma-ri’s diaries are still missing and reminding themselves that the key to the box holding the diaries had been found in her stomach. Detective Yeh assumes this means she’d written the name of her killer in one of the diaries, and Mu-gak complains that they’re probably in Baek-kyung’s possession but they can’t get a warrant. Meanwhile the warrant to search Jae-hee’s house comes in, so they all head over.
Despite her yelling at Mu-gak that she refuses to help him anymore, Cho-rim goes on a search for the mysterious leafy green scent. She checks out foods, herbal medicine, and even an herb seller on the street, but doesn’t see the guy from the murder scene.
Until suddenly he rides right past her on his bike, trailing the green scent in his wake, and Cho-rim gives chase. He corners her in an alley, but Cho-rim manages to get past him, and she hides behind a truck just long enough to text Mu-gak for help. But the man finds her and pulls a knife, asking why she’s following him.
Again Cho-rim runs, and slips into a building to hide in a bathroom supply closet. The man checks the door but walks away — only to climb over the partition from the bathroom stall and start waving that knife at Cho-rim again.
Thankfully, we see Mu-gak’s distinctive blue crystal scent waft in from the hall, and he calls out for Cho-rim. But before she can answer, the man grabs her and holds the knife to her throat, so Mu-gak leaves the bathroom without checking the locked door further.
The man relaxes and lets go of Cho-rim, but only so that he can hold the knife at her face again. Ohthankgoodness, the door suddenly bursts open and it’s Mu-gak, who quickly wrestles him away from Cho-rim. He and the man grapple, the man runs, and Mu-gak lets him get away so he can go back in to check on Cho-rim.
Now that the danger is passed, Cho-rim succumbs to her tears, and Mu-gak sweetly takes her hand to lead her out. But once they get to a park bench, he goes all gruff and angry and yells at Cho-rim for going after a suspect instead of notifying the police.
Cho-rim gets angry back, yelling that Chef Jae-hee is in prison for something he didn’t do, and it’s only right that an innocent man to be set free as soon as possible. Mu-gak fumes, but assures her that after a proper investigation he’ll be freed. Cho-rim hands Mu-gak some Japanese mugwort cakes, telling him that Japanese mugwort is the scent that was on the dead man’s neck and the murderer’s hands.
But she’s still confused why the scent on the men was so much more intense, and tells Mu-gak that everywhere she went, she couldn’t find anything with the scent that strong. Sighing, he says he’s got to get back to the station, and his overbearing-big-brotherly reminder to behave makes Cho-rim so upset she literally gets hot.
She removes her jacket and there, on the shoulders where the man touched her, is a medley of floral scents. She figures this means the murderer has been in a flower shop, but flower shops don’t sell Japanese mugwort. She catches up to Mu-gak and tells him about the flower scents, and he grumpily holds out a little wound-care kit he got for her knee that she skinned in the chase.
Cho-rim gets all fluttery, and sits down to gesture in the direction of her boo-boo, clearly hoping Mu-gak will bandage it himself. So cute. Instead he says that it’s his fault for asking her help in the first place, and promises to still be her skit partner, but he tells her not to get involved in his cases anymore — it’s too dangerous. He gets on the bus and it pulls away without him even looking back, and Cho-rim can only watch him go.
The detectives inspect Jae-hee’s palatial home, but now the wine box with Ma-ri’s scent on it is gone. They don’t find much, so they head back to the station to revisit Baek-kyung as a suspect in the Barcode murders. Apparently he was married, but his wife died of lifelong heart disease within two years. The two of them lived in Jeju while she was ill, hoping it would be healthier for her.
Mu-gak perks up at this, but goes white to hear that Baek-kyung worked at a hospital there, the same one where his sister was murdered. Interestingly, the time frame also coincides with Cho-rim’s parents’ murders, which also happened in Jeju. Lieutenant Yeom orders Mu-gak to go to Jeju and check out Baek-kyung’s movements during that time.
On his way out, Mu-gak walks past a street vendor selling small teddy bears that record a voice message. He remembers taking his sister to Namsan Tower where they’d played with a bear like that, recording silly messages for each other. He buys one of the bears and makes a visit to Eun-seol’s resting place, recalling happier times when she was alive.
At the hospital in Jeju, Mu-gak discovers that Baek-kyung was just there recently, and had requested to see Choi Eun-seol’s medical records. But he insists that his sister didn’t have any medical records, having been killed almost as soon as she was admitted that night. He asks to see the records, and sees that this Choi Eun-seol has a different birthday than his sister, and realizes there were two girls with the same name.
The detectives identify which buildings used a larger-than-normal amount of electricity recently, and one of them turns out to be a flower shop. Mu-gak goes there with Detectives Ki and Yeh, who secure the outside while he goes in to make the arrest (and HAHAHA, you can clearly hear CHUUURRRR sounds among the noise of a struggle… I’m dying). Mu-gak arrests the owner and murderer all by himself while Ki and Yeh pretend to be bad-ass.
The cowardly duo go in to look for evidence, and find a huge hidden greenhouse full of marijuana. Turns out, innocent Cho-rim mistook the scent for Japanese mugwort, and it explains why the scent was so much stronger than mugwort.
The flower shop owner and the murderer confess to growing illegal substances, but Mu-gak adds an additional arrest for the murder of Chef Hong. The man denies anything, but Mu-gak knows he had a motive — the new chef refused to allow the drug dealers to continue to use his restaurant location as a selling point.
When the chef didn’t bend, the man choked him, only meaning to threaten but accidentally killing him. He’d pushed the chef’s body off the roof to make it look like suicide, and hidden when Jae-hee had come up.
Mu-gak tells Lieutenant Yeom about his findings in Jeju, and she tells him that Choi Eun-seol is the name of the Barcode Murderer’s victims’ daughter. He wonders why Baek-kyung was looking for the daughter’s medical records three years after the fact, figuring they just need one solid piece of evidence to nail Baek-kyung as the Barcode Murderer.
Jae-hee is released and heads home, and Cho-rim brings Moong-chi home later that night. He invites her to stay for dinner, thanking her for believing in him. She wishes Mu-gak could join them, and Jae-hee gives her a strange look when she’s not paying attention.
Mu-gak uses his new access to look up his sister’s case, and Lieutenant Yeom sees and orders him to show her what he’s reading. He tells her this is his sister’s file, and apologizes for not being honest before. In turn Yeom tells Mu-gak that the Choi Eun-seol whose parents were murdered is the only surviving witness of the Barcode Murderer.
Jae-hee and Cho-rim chat over dessert, and she tells him about working for the Frog Troupe. He offers her a second job at his restaurant which she gratefully accepts. Again an odd expression crosses Jae-hee’s face when Cho-rim isn’t looking. He’s creeping me out right now.
Yeom and Mu-gak put the two stories together, and figure out that the murderer must have killed his sister in place of the Eun-seol whose parents were killed. Still assuming that Baek-kyung is the murderer, Mu-gak storms out and goes to his office.
He slams Baek-kyung against the wall and accuses him of murdering his sister by mistake, and Baek-kyung looks genuinely confused and shocked. Yeom is right behind, and pulls Mu-gak off Baek-kyung and down to her car. She yells that this is why there’s a rule against officers working cases involving their family. Wanting to avoid losing authority over this investigation again, she angrily says she never heard his sister’s story.
On her way home, Cho-rim sees Mu-gak’s blue crystal scent even before she sees him waiting for her. He’s not happy to hear about her having dinner with Jae-hee, or her new job, jealously calling Jae-hee her Santa Claus. He stiffly hands her a cute little teddy bear like the one he got his sister, saying he got it for free for buying the first one, and she says she’ll have to thank him by going for drinks.
They eat and drink companionably, but Cho-rim clocks Mu-gak’s somber mood and asks if something happened. He searches her face for a long moment, looking like he wants to tell her everything, but just reaches out to run his hand down her hair. But just as Cho-rim is blushing prettily at the skinship, Mu-gak says blandly that she had food in her hair. PFFT.
Cho-rim excuses herself, and calls her friend Ae-ri to tall her about a friend-of-a-friend (yeah right) who’s been out to eat a few times with a man, been given a doll as a gift, asking if those count as a green light. Ae-ri asks, “So Officer Choi bought you a doll?” and Cho-rim gasps and hangs up, hee.
She goes back in and pours Mu-gak a drink, and downs one herself before she asks if she can come on his next investigation. He just stares into space with an unchanging expression… and snores. HAHA, he’s asleep with his eyes open. Cho-rim nudges his shoulder but he only collapses, still asleep.
Cho-rim remembers Mu-gak saying that he couldn’t sleep when Eun-seol was killed, then had suddenly fainted. Seems he’s still doing that. She pokes the teddy bear and hears a message that he’d recorded for his sister – aww, he gave her the same bear he got for Eun-seol. It’s so touching, even as Mu-gak slumps against the wall, still snoring.
Cho-rim somehow relocates them to a beautiful spot under some cherry blossoms, and the flowers float around them as Mu-gak sleeps with his head in Cho-rim’s lap. A petal gets stuck on Mu-gak’s cheek but, not wanting to wake him, Cho-rim hesitates to remove it, so instead she leans down to gently blow it off. At that exact moment Mu-gak wakes, and turns his head to see Cho-rim’s lips mere inches from his.
COMMENTS
The closer this couple gets, and the more they start to feel the chemistry between them, the more I love them. Not only are they two lonely people who are beginning to be attracted to each other, but they also give each other help and purpose that they wouldn’t have alone. Cho-rim has her ability which helps Mu-gak solve cases that would otherwise go unsolved, and he is helping her achieve her dream of being a comedienne with his talent to be hilarious. They truly have the potential to be each other’s missing half, in a literal as well as a metaphorical sense. Not to mention, how freaking cute are they??? ~flail~
I appreciate that in this episode, Mu-gak got a taste of what can happen if he tries to shut Cho-rim out. She’s not a girl who will sit quietly when told to keep out of something when she knows she can help, but leaving her to her own devices can be dangerous as she doesn’t have the training that Mu-gak has. By forbidding her to help him, he probably instead contributed to Cho-rim’s getting into a dangerous situation, because she was forced to go out on her own. Hopefully now he knows her better, and won’t let that happen again.
I think that his angry yelling was just because seeing Cho-rim nearly harmed or killed probably scared him silly, though he won’t admit it. I’ve conjectured that Mu-gak’s inability to feel emotion may be mostly self-imposed, as a psychological shield to protect himself from being hurt again. Clearly he can feel emotion, as we’ve seen him feel happiness in response to gaining access to Eun-seol’s file, and jealousy over Cho-rim spending time with Chef Jae-hee. But I have a feeling Mu-gak is about to learn that sometimes you can’t avoid caring for a person, no matter how hard you try. Just the fact that he sought her out, when he’d had a bad night and wanted company, says volumes.
Especially not when that person is Cho-rim, and more especially not when she turns on the aegyo and gets all flirty-shy. She’s pretty dang adorable, and it would take a stronger man than Mu-gak with his hard outer shell and gooey marshmallow center to resist her. Now that she acknowledges that she likes him, I expect her to turn that charm on him full-force, and frankly the poor man doesn’t stand a chance. I, for one, can’t wait to see his hard outer shell melt in the face of Cho-rim’s puppy love.
On a different note, I’m now pretty certain that Baek-kyung is innocent. There are so many really smart, interesting theories as to why he might be legitimately looking for Cho-rim, and he’s been pushed forward so hard as the possible killer that it really just seems like a huge red herring now. He seemed truly confused when Mu-gak confronted him, which he wouldn’t be if he had already figured out that Cho-rim is the Eun-seol who saw the murderer. It’s just too obvious, and some of the theories that paint him as innocent make so much sense that I can’t see him as the murderer at this point. I may still be proven wrong, and I’ll do my Interpretive Dance of Wrongity-Wrongness again if that happens. But somehow I think that he’s going to turn out to be an ally to Mu-gak and Cho-rim, and if that’s the case I’m really looking forward to seeing that.

This show is getting better and better. And yes my suspicion that the doctor is the killer dropped in this episode. I still can't disassociate his character in Answer me.. so hyung can't be bad.
Can't wait for the next week's episode.

So far I like how different this series is from the typical Korean dramas, so anything is possible. I mean, things will not necessarily unfold the way we think it'll unfold :)

Hello Hazelnuts,
I love everything about this show as well. I don't know if you have seen this, however I love how SSK just cuddles/snuggles up to CMG/PYC. And when he tilts his head to talk to her, it makes their skinship look more intimate (*Swoon*). I love that she has her hands behind his back, and she doesn't let go.
I also love that PYC doesn't seem to know what to do with is hands, kind of cute. The two of them together starts at about 44 seconds in. I have replayed that a few times. I hope we will get scenes like that in the drama :-) And I also LOVE the OST, the instrumentals and the songs with lyrics (which are very nice by the way. I have read some of the lyrics, and they are so appropriate for our OTP).

I loved the last part where Mugak just passes out in the store because he can't feel fatigue, and that cute scene where he sleeps on Chorim's lap. Chorim must be innerly squee-ing at it right now because of it.
The show is so fun because there's a central murder (the barcode murderer) but there's also side conflicts to ensure that the mystery isn't too easily solved, and the 1 Holy Case doesn't end up overly dragged out and boring (looking at you here, magical hypnotherapist of Hyde, Jerkyll and I). Hwaiting!

Oh my. Romantic scenes are coming. Anyway, I really love the pacing of the story. Now that its revealed that Dr.Chun isn't the murderer but another person. Whenever I watch each episodes, I really feel like I'm in roller coaster ride, I feel so thrilled by the revelations yet laughed hard whenever Mugak and Chorim practiced their skits (they really practiced in the restaurant? Lol) and the easy-going junior detectives made me also laugh. I just wonder how Mugak traced directly Chorims whereabouts in chasing the killer, well, let's say its done.
Poor detective ki, his car was damaged after the victim fall of from the rooftop, kkkk. I really like this two junior detectives, it made the atmosphere of the drama quite lively. And catching the criminal, I couldn't imagine how Mugak was saying those chueerrrrsss sound. Is he practicing that sound while doing a life-death scene? Lol. I adore Yuchun really for this character.
Goodluck team smells!

There's just one thing I didn't quite get. Why did they want to look for buildings that consumed a lot of electricity? What has it got to do with the murder? I know Chorim mentioned about flowers and all... maybe I'm just not so smart...hmmm

I think Cho Rim's mentioning of Japanese mugwort and the different floral scents gave Mugak a hint of what activities the criminal was conducting and how he conducted it.
What I don't get is how Japanese mugwort is related to marijuana...

Ohh! @Lc and @ BedeliaJane
I was just looking up mugwort and it seems it can be smoked as a substitute for marijuana and is considered a psychoactive 'drug'. Maybe Moo Gak realised this and made the association with marijuana production. I wish they had made this clearer in the dialogue. ;)

That must be it! Mu-gak must be doing what you are doing, and that is he googles! :D He must've gone googling when Cho-rim hinted to him on that mugwort thingy, lol (although in front of Cho-rim, he pretended he doesn't buy what she said but in actual fact, he's buying).
Like what @LollyPip says earlier, Mu-gak is a smart detective. He doesn't just receive clues and sit on it. He always makes use of Cho-rim's clues and do his own investigations/assumptions from there. My guess, haha.

Marijuana need to be grown in secrecy, particularly in bustling cities like Seoul. So if you grow them indoors you would need sunlamps. I've always heard that cops figure out who is growing by their amount of electricity consumption, which is much higher than their neighbors.

I think once Cho-rim mentioned the stronger-than-Japanese-mugwort scent to Mu-gak, he got a hunch about the possibility of (fresh) marijuana, and the next logical thought was that to grow a significant amount, you'd need a big enough facility, and that would essentially be a giant greenhouse, which would consume a lot of electricity (I'm assuming). If anyone's watched twdrama Black and White, they have a very similar thing there.
On the topic of similarities, last week's 'specific charcoal scent of this very restaurant' was exactly the same as in Flower Grandpa Investigation Unit. Just how many unique-charcoal places are there? Lol.
Also, did anyone notice that the scent graphics actually were little cannabis leaves? I registered it but didn't think anymore of it until they revealed it really was!

@ maknae_reader,
This is late, however I just wanted to say that I do understand your dad. There was a time when I used to watch almost every drama on KBS World. I had just discovered Kdramas, and I wanted to watch as many as I could. I don't watch as many now. I actually tend to watch one or two at a time. That way, I feel that I can focus better on the story, the characters, the language (I always learn new words [and new expressions], when I watch Kdramas), etc... And I feel that I have the time to process the info that way.
I am glad for you that you dad is into Kdramas. That must give you guys another thing to talk about :-)

Thanks very much LollyPip!
This show continues to be endearing and to grow better each week.
It's so good that the writer has put in enough being together times for our OTP so that we can see how their growing closer takes place so reasonably. And kudos to the actors who show without over-acting, that they are interested in each other without wanting to let the other know. The little moments are gold to rom-com lovers like me!
The good development of the central murder mystery is also such a joy. Despite having a comedy troupe and OTP moments to contend with, the story has not neglected the nub around which our characters revolve. The balance is skillfully maintained.
Added to that, are the sweet moments of pathos as we see more of what Moo Gak was like with his sister, so we know what a sweetie he will be as a boyfriend. :)
Although LollyPip says giving the same bear meant for his sister to Cho Rim is touching, I find it upsetting. Surely the bear I want to receive should be a bear meant just for me and not one taken from the sister to give to me... how else do we explain his recorded message to his sister in it. If he really did buy a new bear, did he so live in his memories that he did not realize he had passed the wrong bear to Cho Rim? Or did he associate Cho Rim so much with his sister that he thought nothing of giving his sister's bear to her? If so, what happened to the bear he bought? And no, we do not want him to consider her as sister-material but as girlfriend!!!
Plothole1? - Cho Rim texted Moo Gak to save her, then ran for her life, so it's amazing that he could find her in the right building in the right restroom.... and so soon.
Plothole2? - As @BedeliaJane mentioned above, there was no clear link between Cho Rim mentioning a flower shop and the need to search for buildings with high energy usage. Unless we are to assume that immediately upon hearing mugwort, Moo Gak realised that a stronger scent meant marijuana instead, and knew that it required special conditions for growth? But the show failed to link it for us.
Other than that, this was a great, solid show, totally entertaining and with a cute cliff-hanger to boot!!! :)

Hello GB unnie,
And once again, I loved reading your comment. I agree with your plotholes, and I too wish that the show had done a better job there.
I am wondering if CMG did buy two teddy bears, one for his sister, and one he intended to give to OCR. Thing was, he gave the wrong one to OCR? I could see why CMG would be buying 2 bears, since they were already there, when he was in front of the vendor. Sometimes guys don't think too hard when it comes to those things, you know (like getting a totally different bear for OCR). Maybe in this case, it's the thought that counts?
I have liked CMG and OCR since the 1st ep., and I continue to love them. I can't wait for their 1st kiss, though I am hoping that by then, CMG can actually FEEL sth physically, b/c I don't want that kiss to be wasted on him, and I want him to be FULLY affected by it, Healer style, ep.9 :-) For all we know, it could be CMG's 1st kiss, since his sister implied that he was not having much of a social life (and he didn't seem to mind, more so content to dot on her).
And that makes me wonder how (if he does), CMG gaining his sense of taste, smell, and physical pain will be handled. I am very curious about that. As it is, when OCR puts on perfume (to smell good) for him, CMG cannot smell it, so he can't appreciate her effort, since he is not aware of it. I am looking forward to that part of the plot, because every time that CMG will hug or kiss OCR, I will want him to be able to feel something, and appreciate that skinship.
I might have more to say, I will be back later. Also thank you for your response in ep.4. I was going to respond back, but I fell asleep (it was 11:50pm my time, when I saw your response). I have to go be with the children (dance competition today), so I will back later :-) I am seriously loving the leads (actor and actress) and the other actors/actresses in this drama. NGM and SJH are rocking their roles, and so is the 2nd lead actress (can't remember her name right now).

Hi Ivoire
It's only 9.35pm over at my side of the world but I'm already falling off my chair (falling asleep like MG! LOL!). Thanks for your comments!
I like your consideration about MG getting his senses back online. I did not think of that. I believe he does have enough sense of feeling to know for eg if something is hard or soft ... so I guess he'd know how a kiss would feel when that happens. :) About appreciating it fully... hard to say.
It's true that it could be a first kiss for him. To tell you the truth, although it's romantic and all that, I feel we set ourselves up for disappointment if we set too great a store on the first time for anything (first kiss, first love etc). In shows the situation can be set up as a great experience and near perfect, but in real life, first times are usually fraught with nervousness and errors LOL!
It's far more important that despite the bumpy starts, things improve and better communication comes into play so that the next times are more meaningful and swoon-worthy. :)
You also have a point here ... "And that makes me wonder how (if he does), CMG gaining his sense of taste, smell, and physical pain will be handled." If it is true that he is unintentionally suppressing his senses and feelings, then falling for Cho Rim may open the way to let the feelings come back for him. I too would like to see how this is done. Will it be a trickle or like opening a floodgate! If the latter, poor guy may not be able to function like the rational cop. LOL!

Hello again GB. ^^
I think when Chorim mentioned the scents of flowers from the murderer, Mugak probably realised that he's either working in a flower shop or a owner of one, & business establishments consume high amount of electricity hence the search for buildings with high energy usage.

Hey @Giegie!
Hello to you too! Thanks!
Yes,... the mention of the flowers and the smell of the mugwort was probably the clues that got MG linking the murderer with marijuana and from there to high energy usage required for producing it. I had to look up mugwort and found out that it can be considered a psychoactive drug, and can be a substitute for marijuana.

Yep, plot hole 1 was quite jarring.
The only explanation I could come up with is that he tracked her phone, otherwise there is absolutely zero possibility for him to find her, the restroom and the conviction that she must be inside the storeroom.
Considering that he is a police who doesn't care too much about proper protocols AND he is concerned about her safety AND in K-drama, stalking is love, it's not entirely impossible that he did, in fact, tracked her that way.

Tracking phones using GPS is not unheard of in kdramas. I remembered it was done in Kill Me Heal Me, where they were trying to locate Oh Rijin using the GPS on her phone.

Yes, tracking is definitely possible, but I really hate it when I, as a viewer, have to make up stuff like that because the show fails to show us stuff.
From all we have seen, it's impossible to assume that MG will get to the restroom. If there had been some hint that MG might be tracking her phone, or be willing to track her phone after the emergency message from her, I'd have been fine with it. But without even the slightest bit of evidence, it's bad story-telling. Because we, the audience, cannot expect MG to come to the restroom at all. It lessens the impact of the situation when he does, because the suspense doesn't work here. Yes, we all expect MG to come and rescue her, but that's ONLY based on meta-knowledge.

@Jon G., if you're irritated over plot holes, I'm irritated over the tendency to forgo normal investigative procedures for the sake of plot development.
There is no need for Moogak to tell Chef Kwon that they will be conducting a search of his house, just a mention that he will be released after the customary xx hours if no evidence will be sufficient. And people like Cho Rim and Dr Chun should not be able to go in and out of his house unescorted.
If they were able to bring things in and out of his house before the search warrant, then what's the point of the warrant at all?

I stopped complaining about the toddler-level approach to reality in K-drama a very long time ago. Basically ANYTHING in these shows is utter nonsense: police, economy, law, physics, biology, medicine, psychology, even eating and drinking and basic human relationships. IF it serves the plot development, well, who cares.
It only still bothers me when they not only get it completely wrong, they also make it much more complex than reality, and it DOESN'T even help the plot development (latest example: the "Falling for Innocence" bond market stuff).

Thanks Jon G. The likelihood is extremely high.
Another thing about the lack of protocols and procedure. Or for us viewers... the lack of dot-joining: even among kdramas where this can be somewhat lacking, in this show investigation-wise, it's super amazing how conclusions are just reached without more evidence being brought to bear, and how the detectives just accept what Moo Gak say without verifying for themselves.
Even outside of police business, how could MG, calling from outside, tell that CR was eating ramyun in her home?
There are probably more and better egs, but I can't recall them.
Still it's a testament to the producers of this show, that despite all this, we are willing to overlook so much for the sheer 'mindless' enjoyment of a fun, funny and good paced story. :)

Yes, that's another part that really bugs me. How the heck does chef get released only because now the detectives have different ideas on what is going on without any more proofs? As far as proofs are concerned, Goong Min chef is the last person there before the other person was pushed from the rail. That was the moment I told myself, "Oh heck...I guess I"ll be watching this for the actors/actresses, then...cause the writer thinks too highly of her/himself. She can't seem to tell logic very clearly."

April 18, 2015 at 1:52 PM
I had the same thought as @ Sw33tnshie. When CMG found her in the bathroom/storeroom, I also wondered how he located her. And I agree with Jon G. If I, as a viewer, have to fill in the gaps to make sense of some of the things that happen in the drama (when they could give us a hint at least), it becomes a plot hole, it is bad story-telling, and it feels like lazy writing to me. It also gives me the impression that the people behind the drama (mainly the writer, and maybe the PD) think that none of the viewers will care about such details, when in fact some viewers do (we are having this discussion, which proves that we care, though we still like or love the show).
On a different note: I have a question about ep.4 that I asked on that recap, though I did it when most commenters don't visit the comments' section any more. I am asking the question again because I am just really curious: does anyone have any speculations as to why, when CMG seemed to have called OCR "dongsaeng" (when talking about her to Lieutenant Yeom, and to his colleagues), sites like viki.com translated that word as "friend?" If he sees her as his friend, then why didn't I hear the word, "chingu?" Did CMG meant sth in Korean that was not conveyed (or fully conveyed) in English? Like, did CMG meant to say that OCR was a "younger" friend (so "don't get any ideas, we are not romantically involved. Even though she might be a friend, she is so much younger that I would not date her. She is more like a "sister friend" to me?) I hope I am making sense, with my question.
GB unnie and I talked about it, but I am still not fully satisfied, and I am still puzzled about that. So if you have any thoughts on it, please do share. Thank you! And btw, in one of the teasers, I learned that OCR is 23 (Korean age), and CMG is 29. So, she is younger than him by a few years.

Hi @Ivoire!
To answer your question, the word 'chingu' is used to address friends of the same age- similar to 'donggap'(which is more formal and not used for friends). In this context(or any other, I might add), 'dongsaeng' would mean any girl who's close to him, younger to him and not have any romantic relationship with him.
Hope that answers your question!

Also, thank you for explaining the term "Donggap." I had seen it before (on DB in fact), and my understanding (from what I had read), was that it had to do with people born the same year. I didn't know that it was a " more formal term" than "chingu." I guess now I know. Your explanation definitely added more to the little that I (already) knew.

I think I missed something really basic. I thought he knew from the beginning that the serial killer had killed his sister. I thought that's why he was so caught up in the current cases involving that killer. Clearly I was wrong. Sigh.
Still loving "Chun-bear" though in very single scene he's in. And this show overall makes me very very happy even though there are some basic plot holes. (Like that guy could never be booked for murder...there's absolutely no evidence for it and he said he didn't do it...the theory was all circumstantial and we only know it's true because or leading lady's skills)

I was thinking that for all these cases where proof is so insufficient, the only recourse is to get a guilty confession. Whether the police did get it from the chef's killer is not shown ... thus the plot hole. We are just assuming that they did.

i'm really impressed by yoochun's improvement as an actor. i find him so, so likable here. i remember how stiff he seemed in sungkyunkwan scandal (where he was still likable), and look how far he's come! of course, he's only gotten better with each drama since sungkyunkwan, but he's particularly lovable here.
i'm definitely surprised by the drama overall. it's not a bad watch, taking into consideration that i was sure it would be a flop. the premise didn't intrigue me, but the execution is much better than i ever expected. shin se-kyung is also infinitely easier to like when she's being bright and spunky, instead of so moody and serious. i'm still not a fan of hers, but my intense dislike for her might have diminished ever so slightly. goes to show how important characters can be for your real life image!

Yoochun always has this "Doin´my Job. Doin de job here. Watch out, I am jobbing. Let´s act, yes. “But who can resist a man who loved his little sister so much that he actually lost all ability to feel anything when he lost her?”
I know I can’t! :D Who doesn’t want a Mu-gak? He’s always doting on his little sister like as if she’s his precious baby, their relationship is just so cute. Remember in the first episode, he even applied in advance to his superior to take the following day off, just in case. Apparently, he can see himself fainting when he sees the gash on his Eun-seol’s face (or something along this line lol). Imagine the shock when he found his sister dead.
I guess when he lost his little sister, he didn’t know how to handle the lost so much so that his subconscious self is building a wall around himself to protect himself from being hurt emotionally like that again. No smiles, no tears, no pain, no taste, no feelings but when the weird bubbly girl Cho-rim bounces into his life, the cold wall he’s built for himself is slowly melting away.

i had a feeling since the first episode that it wasn't Baek Kyung who was the killer since he looked so dazed when he bumped into Mu Gak in the flashback where Mu Gak's younger sister died. Baek Kyung had blood on him, but he looked too zoned out and almost traumatized. Why would a serial killer be that shaken up over killing a witness? esp since the bar code murders seem like a psychotic break
On a different note, we know that it's not Baek Kyung, and the next episode recap isn't out yet so I don't want to spoil it or anything. But I'm really curious as to why the REAL bar code killer murders ppl. Is the killer just insane? Do they have a traumatic past? Are they targeting specific people?
One more question: I think in ep 2 or 3, when Ma Ri first went missing, they cut to a scene where she was sitting on a bed, her hair messy and her shoes kicked off, in what looked like a mental institutional room, aka, plain white walls, nothing else but a bed. Does anyone know what that was?

Remember the killer waits 7 days to murder so she was held captive in the room they showed.

OMG YEAH EPISODE 6
Holyshit so scared af
In episode 6 wasn't there a scene where he was all reflective and guilt ridden?
I feel like the all white room is where he keeps his 'test subjects' victim for 6 days and he monitors them and sees what reactions they have or something...it's almost as if he wants to know the inner workings of their minds so he can be more skillful at whatever he wants to do...
Cos if I were to be placed in an all white room I'd be bored as hell... If I didn't have strong mental strength I'd eventually go mad... What if the murderer actually doesn't show his face instead he directs his victims by probing into their subconscious or artificially dominating them to cutting up the barcode themselves but then it's on the wrist on second thoughts and one wrong cut would be deadly so.... Unless he cuts the barcode whilst revealing himself for the extra shock factor....oh maybe he tests them on questions and stuff and when they win/lose he still kills them anyways
Help
I need episode 7

Well, if we apply the adage about 'keeping ones enemy close', then the Bar Code killer will turn out to be the ex-policeman, who is Cho Rim's current foster father.
I don't how it all links up. But, the dramas do wonders with linking things up . . . no matter how far-fetched. LOL

I started this show yesterday and just caught up to ep 5 now. Thanks for the recaps Lollypip!
I have such mixed feelings about this show. Or should I say, I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying it considering how uneven/flawed the writing is. Honestly the cast is doing such a great job, and has so much chemistry, that it took me a while to notice that the writing is... kind of mediocre. The dialogue is pretty repetitive and bland, and there've been a lot of times we've had to just assume things happened because otherwise it would make no sense. Like Mugak probably having tracked Chorim's phone (is he allowed to do that?) or the drug dealer having confessed in the face of Mugak's story of how it probably happened. Plus OH MY GOD what an incompetent bunch of cops. Why is Mugak, the rookie on the investigation team and a patrol officer who apparently didn't pass the test to become a detective, better at figuring stuff out than all of his sunbaes? Chief Kang is completely stupid, I don't even know how he got promoted, and none of them do any work. Yeom takes her job seriously, but like 90% of the time it's Mugak that points really obvious stuff out. (Like, seriously, in the last 4 years it never occurred to Yeom to see if the bar codes actually scan?) And also I rolled my eyes when she asked what Chorim's name was when she recognized her, and then she was like, oh, oops, wrong person. The woman suspects her of being in witness protection, does she really think she's still going to be calling herself Choi Eun-seol?
But on the other hand, this show is just so much fun to watch. Everyone's acting is so great, and the comic timing of the leads especially is perfect. Plus despite all the holes in the plot and the times the writer forgets to explain something, there are all these great, subtle moments of humour, and the jokes are actually carried through so well, down to the details. Like how Elena always calls in the middle of a stakeout, or how the two detectives actually had their wounds bandaged for a few scenes after getting injured in the first episode. Plus the "CHURRRRRRRRR?!" plus the Chunface can cover any multitude of sins.
I guess this is just one of those dramas that spends more time on the cute and the humour than on the details of the mystery aspect, and the best way to enjoy it is not to examine it too closely and focus on what it does well. Because it does those things SO well.

THAT WOYING
SHE SOUNDS SO SELFISH WHEN SHE SAID "BLAHBLAH I NEVER HEARD YOUR SISTER'S STORY" like calm down woman solving that case might link to the barcode murderer
On the other hand, would it seem that Dr chun had to save his wife and was offered a said amount by some mysterious person to kill a :Choi Eun seol because Dr Chun has easy access to patients as opposed to the murderer, like when it's revealed who it seemingly is next episode, consider his occupation, it's gonna be hella weird for him to be in the hosiptal .
I also feel like the barcode murderer kills the people close to the victims
First it was cho rim's parents, then he supposedly went after cho rim
Nek minnut it's _____( won't spoil, not confirmed yet) who has been watching Cho Rim and I feel like he's going to go after cho rim...
I also feel like the barcode murderer fits into society like a glove but you don't suspect him at first :S
That,l said, highly anticipating ep 7

Hmm, can't comment on that since I haven't seen episode 6 yet. But there's definitely a lot we don't know about the killer and his motivations. I don't think it's the doctor though, he's had lots of opportunities to kill Chorim by now if he really wanted to.

Funny thing: I thought they captured the real life stupidity of real life police rather well (completely involuntarily, of course). So many of them are just ordinary punch-clock officer people who happen to work in investigation. The kind of highly intelligent, highly motivated and morally strong characters from cop shows and crime procedurals don't exist in reality.

I would agree to an extent, like for example Chief Kang seems like the kind of guy who got to his position through seniority and riding the coattails of smarter colleagues/underlings, and that's also why the incompetent cops in I Hear Your Voice didn't bother me - they were just patrol officers. But here we've had it repeatedly mentioned since episode one that the homicide detectives team is an elite one that is difficult to get into, and Mugak wasn't able to do that which is why he's been trying to solve cases on his own. So how come this "elite" team are all more concerned with who's going to pay for lunch than catching killers and Mugak the former patrol officer is the only one with any useful ideas? At least have one smart, passionate detective other than him on the team. And I feel like Team Leader Yeom doesn't count because she's such a stereotype - the cold, competent young female outsider that threatens the guys' masculinity. (Except she's not competent, so... ugh.)

IHYV-cops:
I have to say, I thought those patrol officers there did a marvellous job. There were motivated, professional and didn't get derailed by psychologically challenged residents (a.k.a. the protagonists). They did their work based on evidence instead of emotions and they even gave an ex-con a chance to start a new life without too much of a prejudice, something too few people do both in K-drama and in real life.
They weren't perfect, but then again, as you said, they are patrol officers.
"elite" homocide etc.
Yes and no. "Difficult to get into" doesn't necessarily means that the hurdle is skill. Let's just say that "official systems" tend to be rather ignorant of useful skills and much more dependent on subordination skills (and in some more modern countries, on measurable performance, which, again, usually has nothing to do with useful skills).
A lot of police start into their career as highly motivated, but that fades away pretty early once they are confronted with their "real" job (sucking up to their bosses, writing reports about things they pretend to have done if they weren't wasting their time writing reports, stuff like that).
What remains is the "formal" career, and certain things (like investigation or special units) boost your career and your salary. Police try to get into these positions not primarily because they care (never mind being able) but because: promotions.
Of course, this is a comedy. This is not The Wire.

@ Jon G
"I thought they captured the real life stupidity of real life police"
Ironically, I felt that they were deliberately showing up the ineptitude of the police ... making Kang and minions appear more like caricatures, and in the process, as you say, they may have inadvertently ended up portraying real life!! (Oh dear, that's a sad thought).

"While she’s there she notices Ma-ri’s signature scent on a box of wine, but since she was Jae-hee’s girlfriend, Cho-rim doesn’t think much of it. "
In retrospect after seeing episode 6 I wish she had looked at that box, alas I'll say no more as I don't wish to spoil anything.
"They go for fried chicken and practice their skit right in the restaurant, and wow, those CHUUUURRRRRs are getting louder and longer! Mu-gak is getting even better acting-wise, though the looks from the other customers embarrass him when he notices. HAHA, one of the other patrons even pays their bill, taking their skit as a real conversation and leaving a message for Mu-gak that the country is a nice place to live. "
That whole scene especially when their meal was payed for had me literally rolling around on the floor.

i really find the acting for Lieutenant Yeom cringe worthy. Her acting is very blank and bland, but not in the same fashion that Mu Gak's is. It just feels like she doesn't know how to convey emotions, even if she's trying to portray a serious, professional women (there are so many actresses who manage to pull that role off better) and whenever she has outbursts of emotion (esp whenever she's at a crime scene) it looks so forced.

I agree, she's terrible at playing the cold, reserved type. I've seen her in other roles that were bright, cheerful types and she suited those much better. I don't think she's a bad actress, but this is the one case of miscasting in this show.

I'm really enjoying the nice character and plot development overall. Creepy Chef Kwon probably has a huge basement below his palace where he kept his victims. Remember when Ma Ri's dog kept on barking outside a particular door? Now I don't know if the good doctor is an accomplice or simply posturing as his friend in order to get closer and investigate him further.

But the doctor did recognize Choi Eun-sol from somewhere and his shoes at the ER were similar to the shoes of the serial killer in Episode 1. That's either a red herring or he had something to do with either her accident or treatment at the hospital. Gah, it's so confusing.

I am so delighted to see Shin Se Kyung in a drama in which I actually enjoy her. Quite frankly speaking, I was disappointed at first to see her cast in this drama but I am glad she is in this. Apart from her, Han Groo would have done amazing as well but Shin Se Kyung is actually likeable for once!
She has improved so much as an actress - or she is just perfect for rom-coms? Anyways, thank you for the recap. I absolutely love this drama and can't wait for the next few days.

what puzzles me is how does the chef know cho rim is the witness, for all he knows he killed the witness long ago (mugak sister) and we can assume a mistaken identity because her "dad" hid chorim real name and identity so the murderer will NOT recognize her
so how did the chef know its her?

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!
"You complete me". Such a cheesy phrase but it really encapsulates Mu Gak and Cho Rim's relationship. I also think that Mu Gak 's inability to form attachments is self-imposed. Yes, he lost his sense of smell, taste and pain, but those are physical sensations. But he still has his intelligence and the ability to feel emotions. He is just emotionally shut down.
I find the main mystery, the Barcode case, deeply intriguing, but I can do without the episodic mini murder cases. They still feel like segment fillers. Let's hope that the writer will do away with them as the Special Investigate Unit dwell deeper into the serial killing case.
And the OTP are so darn cute. I just wanna squish them.

It seems that the true culprit is either:
1) Both the doctor and the chef
-The wrong Eun Seol was murdered. If this was one person, the killer would have known not to murder Mu-gak's little sister since he clearly saw SSK's face. Their face and height also are different. Chef who murdered Cho-Rim's parents would have been the one at the house then contacted doctor about a Choi Eun Seol. Since he only knew the name, he made a mistake.
2) Neither of them
-Doctor recognizes Cho-Rim's face very well. Let's say he was the one who murdered Cho-Rim's parents because the culprit saw SSK's face very well. Doctor was seen later in the hospital with bloody hands bumping into Mu-Gak, walking away from the slit-throat KSH. Isn't this a bit contradictory? If he clearly saw SSK's face close-up, he wouldn't have slit KSH's throat.
-Let's say it was chef who murdered Cho-Rim's parents. He would clearly recognize SSK's face very well. Either he's keeping on a really good poker face or this is the first time he's met Cho-Rim. Chef's advances towards Cho-Rim look more like a romantic attempt rather than a murderous one. If he wanted to kill Cho-Rim, he had a lot of chances to do so already.
I wouldn't be surprised though if either of them have something to do with the serial murders. The doctor going on vacation to Jeju and then going abroad just at that time seems too suspicious. Chef's mysterious door. And the diaries, why is he keeping them and why does he not want them to show up in the search?
Another thing to wonder is what do all the victims have in common?
This is really starting to reach I Hear Your Voice's level.
