New drama from Heartless City writer courts Lee Shi-young, Kim Mu-yeol
by girlfriday
It’s a cable lovechild, if you will: a director from tvN and a writer from JTBC have spawned a new drama for OCN. Writer Yoo Sung-yeol of the noir crime thriller Heartless City is penning a new drama called My Beautiful Bride over at crime thriller headquarters, otherwise known as cable network OCN. The PD of Emergency Couple is onboard, and Lee Shi-young (Valid Love, Golden Cross) and Kim Mu-yeol (War of Dogs, Eungyo) are currently being courted to headline.
Lee Shi-young just completed her last drama Valid Love in February, while Kim Mu-yeol hasn’t been on television in over five years (The Wife Is Back, Iljimae). He’s primarily a musical actor (Kinky Boots, The Promise) who does the occasional movie. He’s also about to marry actress Yoon Seung-ah (I Need Romance 3, Empire of Gold) in April.
The new suspense thriller will be about a husband whose wife goes missing one day. He sets out to find her himself, and that’s as much as the basic premise tells us. Kim Mu-yeol is up for the leading husband role, while Lee Shi-young has been offered the part of a detective. I totally expected her to play the wife, but perhaps the missing wife is more like a secondary character who drives the plot but doesn’t get much screen time?
In any case, I love it when Lee Shi-young gets to put her real-life badassery to use onscreen in action-packed roles. It’d be nice to have Kim Mu-yeol play an everyman, all raw emotion and brash actions, while Lee Shi-young plays the tough detective. Though perhaps from the writer of Heartless City, nothing is what it seems on the surface?
My Beautiful Bride will follow Missing Noir M on Saturday nights beginning in June.

omg I didn't expect to see LSY back on screen so soon! though I felt bad for her after getting eliminated to be in national boxer team, but glad to see her get back on acting quickly. Gotta love this woman's energy. I loved her Il ri in VL, even though that drama could have been muchhh better if they dared a little, but well, overall the acting, the directing were superb. I'm not complaining if she keeps getting offer from cable tv ^^ finally sth to look forwards to!

So very looking forward to this! I hope the reports of her being the detective are right, since that sounds like much more central a role.
It is OCN after all. It won't be a flashback drama, so the wife will probably just be a plot device and an ultimate goal, rather than a main character. Husband + cops looking for her sounds more like OCN stuff.
I hope Lee accepts.

Cruel City was my favorite drama of 2013. So happy to hear that this is writer Yoo Sung-yeol's new project. I approved of the the two leads. It's wonderful to see Kim Mu-yeol back in dramaland and I really like Lee Shi-young.

I honestly didn't know who Kim Mu-yeol was until this article, but dang he is fineeeee.
The drama sounds good from what little info was released. Since it's on OCN, I hope it keeps up with the thrills and mystery.

I absolutely loved Cruel City, which is saying something since my tolerance for dark shows is relatively low. I've been wondering recently when we would see something new from this writer, so this news makes me pretty excited.

Really, really hope this turns out as good as Cruel City. I can count on one hand the dramas I've fallen in love with over the last couple of years and Cruel City tops the list. I did my first semester psych presentation on it. :P
I think more and more dramas are becoming slick, packaged, marketing products with little substance. Attractive at first glance but hollow inside. I can't bring myself to get excited about the host of new dramas this year, so the ones that do stir my interest are like fireflies on the horizon.

Some serious Gone Girl flashbacks from this line

lol maybe it'll be a Gone Girl rip off the way Heartless City is an Internal Affairs/The Departed rip off.

I wish they'd bring more OCN/JTBC thrillers to Dramafever and Viki. I still check every now and then for Gapdong and Bad Guys but they aren't on :-(

I love Heartless City to pieces, so I'm looking forward to this. But, I'm not too sure about the PD ? I hope it's gonna be as gritty as Heartless City.

She was so so so amaziiiiing in Valid Love. I hope she takes this since I've been wanting to see her again. She really is a fave and she picks great characters. This sounds really awesome but also like Gone Girl? Except not a dead wife? I think...lol. I should read that book, I only know what I've seen from commercials.
I remember watching the actor in Eungyo and I think he is engaging as well. He was an everyman there. He was a writer, I think...an apprentice writer? It's been a while since I've seen that movie. I think this would make a compelling career.
