Changmin makes sageuk debut in Scholar Who Walks the Night

girlfriday: Ummm… I don’t know how to tell you this, but Changmin is going to star in Scholar Who Walks the Night.

javabeans:

girlfriday: Hello… hello…?

javabeans: I… have too many feelings inside of me and they’re all screaming. Do you mean the Changmin I’m thinking of, or has there been the birth of an overnight sensation and acting god also named Changmin?

girlfriday: Sadly no. Yes, it’s that Changmin, of Paradise Ranch and Mimi. I’m… sorry?

javabeans: *silent screaming*

girlfriday: I hate to make it worse, but does this mean that he’s replacing Lee Jun-ki? Because, uh, the math does not work out on that.

javabeans: I may have just had a rage attack.

girlfriday: Wait, wait! Don’t have an aneurysm yet! There might be hope that he’s just an addition, not a replacement. He’s playing a prince, and I’m pretty sure the prince is not the scholar. I think.

javabeans: Oh god, please let that be true. Also, if that’s true, I’m going to beat you up for doing this to me. I almost had a heart attack!

girlfriday: The casting articles don’t say anything clearly (surprise, surprise), but the manhwa summaries say that the story takes place during Yeongjo’s reign, seven years after he killed Crown Prince Sado, which makes Jeongjo a prince at the time. If the drama follows that, then Changmin has been cast to play Jeongjo.

javabeans: I remember hearing that there was a second vampire in the palace when serial murders arise, so I presume either that the prince is the vamp, or the prince needs protection from the second vamp. Probably the latter.

girlfriday: Okay, a vampy Jeongjo would definitely be new. Also crazy. But new.

javabeans: You know, if Changmin only is in a supporting role, I think I can deal with it. Just don’t take my Jun-ki away from me, please!

girlfriday: See, now you feel good about the casting!

javabeans: I think that’s an optimistic reading of my reaction. Also, c’mere. I have a noogie with your name on it.

girlfriday: *runs away cackling*

I Though tvxq fans said he will enlist with yunho and if we talk about yunho age he is already 30 and he is younger then jaejoong just a few days, I quess he should enlist at last next mont, so this is means changmin didn't go with yunho?

Yunho, Yoochun, and Junsu have until the end of the year to enlist. Changmin can enlist anytime he wants, really. But he still has 2 years to enlist.

So many rumor changmin will enlist with yunho but anyway all the best for him, for sure if he accept this role it's mean tvxq members will enlist separately too like jyj, long years waiting for tvxq Comeback then.

They probably will enlist separately.. Lets them develop solo careers and the likes. However I agree that it would be much better for them to enlist together: gives us only 2 years of waiting instead of 4 :p

0

I hope they enlist together or within months of each other.

Jaejoong, Yunho, Yoochun and Junsu need to enlist this year since all of them are 86's. Changmin has 2 more years before he needs to enlist.

I don't want to wait 4 years before they make a comeback.

But if they come back as 5, I will be over the moon!

She seriously sucks. It literally made me rage when I saw articles saying that Hong Ah Reum, a beautiful and talented young actress that I've followed for a few years now, was confirmed as the female lead for a tVN daily drama. A freaking daily drama. And people like Hye Ri get to waltz into dramas like the Reply series and provide further fuel for the people who say that rookie actresses suck? Sadface.

Omg so disappointed.. Even though it's not confirmed the fact they considered her already is upsetting! Of course she's not bad bad but I thought they'd cast a rookie or an idol with actual acting potential not one that needs improvements even after starring in other dramas.. Good examples Eunji & Dohee... Sigh

See, the thing is that the production says that she's just one of the candidates and her side says that she's positively reviewing an offer. I don't think her company would be crazy enough to just pretend that the offer is pretty much in Hye Ri's court. I'm gonna go with her on this one.

"She's not bad bad" ... I think it is pitiful how we have to drum up excuses and stuff our poor impressions under a cushion when it comes to idols.
Frankly, I will always be bitter and annoyed that the quality of a drama is constantly held hostage to the superior loyalty and buying power of fans whose only concern is to see the face of their current obsession.
I find I end up watching shows purely for their lack of idols, unless the casted idol has already shocked everyone with some actual acting chops, which seems to happen about 20% of the time.

you're 100% right, but Eunji is an idol and she really impressed me in Reply 1999 and made me fall for the series. i'm not defending hyeri's acting bc it's honestly not good to hold up for a series like Reply. there are like 4 idols that i can name as actual good SERIOUS actors (Choi Seunghyun, Do Kyungsoo, Lee Joon and Eunji) but you're right. acting in dramas should not be a monopoly that idols/entertainment companies should own. there's a difference btwn an idol doing a bunch of supporting or minor roles and becoming better and Hyeri's case of two-three tiny roles that are 2 dimensional

can't believe you're forgetting Im Shiwan and Jaejoong, but then again they do less idoling than most idols

0

Oh wow. They're going for Hyeri? Did they not bother giving HJM a shot even for just a scene? She was just there so its not like I could hope she got lessons or something. I'm not even against idols getting cast in the Reply series because they've given us Jung Eun-ji, Hoya and Dohee. But if someone is as terrible as Hyeri, there's no writer or PD that can elevate that.

But then we've also seen what Go Ara transformed to. There might be hope yet...?

You guys need to watch the beggining of epi 7! It'll be ok, it doesn't have any spoilers. It's totally unrelated to the show, but it's funny because she is talking exactly about people saying she isn't a good actress.

If they had to cast an idol from Girls' Day at least they could have chose Minah, who can act.

On the Hyeri thing let's not panic yet. I'd like to point out no one knew what to expect from Jung Eun-ji before Answer Me 1997 and Go Ara's casting in Answer Me 1994 elicited similar panic but they both did wonderfully. So perhaps the casting director saw something in Hyeri we haven't yet and she'll surprise us.

Eunji won her role in an audition, Go Ara had ten years of experience and at least one or two ok performances early in her career before she sat back and became just a pretty face.

Hyeri? Has no acting ability in tje dramas we have already seen. And the PD is already willing to ditch her by saying she's not confirmed and he is looking at several others, so maybe he doesn't really have that much confidence in her acting.

Before all the bad comment or disregard and mocking changmin comes, i better say this first.

I'm excited. I saw a potential from him (maybe he can pull a yunho ala NWJ XD) since MIMI, so i hope for a further improvement. Though i dunno how good is he with saeguk, but i'm willing to try. Yoochun made a surprising impression on his first saeguk,so why not him?

Besides,i like han groo so i'm gonna watch this.

@blueb and rory

I'm aware that Yunho got positive reviews from Korean netizens. They support and praise him for his acting improvement in Night Watchman. From my objective point of view, Yunho's acting was adequate and very decent, not bad at all. His crying scenes were so natural and see emotion from his eye expression.

3. [+890, -313] Goosebumps over Yunho's acting;; he really improved and he's good now ㅜㅜㅜㅜ When he had his hair down, it reminded me of Reverse Theater from a few years ago. So much time has passed and he only gets more handsome. Jung Yunho, just take everything will you ㅡㅡ

4. [+468, -59] Did today's episode have the scene with Moosuk and his sword?

5. [+198, -29] When Inhwa died, he really cried like an oppa who lost his sisterㅠㅠ..

6. [+195, -43] He did let his image go but I liked that he was so focused on his acting that he didn't care about how he looked... And his hair makes him look handsome.

7. [+200, -49] I don't like idols so I avoid dramas with them in it but Yunho's acting was good

@Haren

That is your generic assumption, but I've already met a whole bunch of NON-fans on Night Watchman Forum Soompi who actually praised that acting scene. They are not even fans of Yunho but they still cheer him on.

0

Actually, I saw potential in Changmin in Mimi too. I quite liked that minidrama.

Yunho on the other hand... he's a lost cause to me. I really like him as an idol but acting is not his thing.

I have hopes for Changmin though. Maybe not a lead, but I think he could pull off a seconday character.

Perhaps you are Changmin biased...LOL....I'm not even a fan of Yunho, but seriously I think his acting in Night Watchman was decent and watchable, especially for his First historical drama. I'm starting to see potential in this guy. Therefore, I would Not say he's a lost cause. As for Changmin, he improved too but he's Not better than Yunho. I'm not a fan of either guy so I'm more objective. I cannot imagine Changmin in a sageuk, but we'll see.

I had exactly the same reaction to those news, and Changmin is my ultimate Korean bias so... yeah.

I haven't seen 'Fly with the Gold' yet which, as far as I remember, gave him an award by critics there in Japan, but I couldn't watch Paradise Ranch (I only saw the first couple of episodes) and it took me some months to finish Mimi (which is only 4 episodes :S).

Well, I guess it won't be ~that~ bad if he's not the main character? ^^U

As for the casting, I thought my luck had to run out someday. In the weight scale, the number of exciting casting was seriously outdoing the bad. This was bound to happen although why in Han Groo's drama?! Now I have to stick around to see Changmin and his awkwardness.

I'm also a DB5K fan (although admittedly, Changmin has always been my last favorite), and I also hope that he's a second lead. He's totally adorable, but I don't see him with the leading man spark just yet and he could definitely use some more practice. I think he could be a potentially cute coupling with Han Groo and his looks definitely match that of a prince. Yunho's enlistment is coming up this year, so there will be no more duo promotions for a while, so it looks like SM will be transitioning him into solo projects. I would not be surprised if we see a lot more of Changmin in the next 2 years while Yunho is away--though I do think he'd do better as a solo singer (he's so talented!) than as an actor, where he still needs to grow.

I never finished Paradise Ranch simply because the storyline was too awful. I watched Mimi and felt Changmin had improved but it was Fly with the Gold that had me routing for him as a potential actor. He did an outstanding job as Korean spy in Japan, and Japanese isn't even his first language.

i am hoping that lee jun ki will get the lead part. seriously, when i mentioned about him doing this drama, even my aunt said he's perfect for the role. i have no idea who this changmin is but in all fairness, we should give the guy another chance. not as the lead but maybe second lead or a smaller part. who knows, he might do better.

i would prefer for idol actors to start small..to learn the trade better and with various small parts, they could pick up some pointers from more experienced actors. and if they still fail to impress, well, forget it then. just stick to singing! like some idol actors/actresses who started with small roles and as they gained more experiences, they end up doing lead roles with much confidence.

so, changmin and the likes of him, take a leaf out of your fellow idol actors who did it right.. hwang jung geum, ji hyun woo, im siwan, that d.o. kid, lee joon, just to name a few.

I'm sorry to say this, but it seems he is the lead. Miles away from Lee Jun Ki's acting skill, I'll pray for a surprise.

I saw his latest project in MiMi. My god, did it ever suck. It's like he was going for a contemplative character with depth, and he ended up having a one dimensional, dead pan expression the entire time.

I don't know, maybe if CM's role is written as a shallow expressionless character like with Yunho's character in night watchman, he may be alright. but please do not be leading role.

LOL -->the stuff we kdramalovers just read without even blinking an eye : I remember hearing that there was a second vampire in the palace when serial murders arise, so I presume either that the prince is the vamp, or the prince needs protection from the second vamp.

I like Changmin...i really do.... uhm...but...

Hoping he's improved.

lol....as expected, anti-tvxq fans coming out to bash Changmin and dragging Yunho into it even tho this drama has nothing to do with him....if you backtrack to any drama related to TVXQ, the so called "I'm a TVXQ fan but..." ppl come out.

Yunho's acting improved alot in NWJ...he's the only reason I was able to watch the drama to the end...plus, the last 2 dramas he was in had good ratings too, but of course no acknowledgement whatsoever....I know it irks some antis when their dramas do well, but at least don't waste time to post comments that just bash them...what's the point?

I remember in the SPY thread, there were a few Jaejoong bashers but that immediately got stopped and everyone was saying if you don't like just don't comment and don't watch so it doesn't ruin it for those that actually are excited...but where are those defenders now? double standards really.

nah I bet the fans who defense jaejoong most is his only fans and maybe just jyj fans, and why whould you ask them to care with changmin. I think this is not about double standard.

don’t try to drag Jaejoong here..don’t even try to compare actor Jaejoong with Yunho or Changmin because you will fail miserably.
if you want to defend your oppas..use other methods because other people aren’t responsible that Yunho and Changmin are bad at acting. Don’t tell me that girlfriday and javabeans are jealous haters too.

@lala: no, it was several ppl that just wanted to enjoy the show without all the complaints and bashing....and so ppl stopped...hence the double standard....if they were just dellusional JJ fans then ppl probably wouldn't have bothered to listen and see their point.

@uohgo: read my comment clearly...never compared their acting....just how people respond in threads....one is monitered to be kept civil and allowing fans that are supportive to be able to do so in a thread without all the hate..the other doesn't have the same haven. This is GF and JB's place...hence they can do whatever they want...and no, they aren't like the haters I'm talking about who come in here just to say stuff like "he's ugly" -_-

by the way, I'm surprised that I only brought jaejoong up to prove a good point while many here dragged Yunho in with no reason whatsoever except to hate on them both and you're totally okay with that...if you want to be taken seriously, then try to be at least a bit more objective.

that is called an "example" as in, an example in an argument. people are entitled to speak. I really can´t see how using an example of another actor hurts anyones´ interests. . don´t play police.

@redfox: aren't you playing police towards me? lol...aren't I entitled to speak too? or just bashers? You don't even know who he is and yet you side with the haters..shows your true personality really.

I never really hid my personality tho.

yes you are entitled to speak. why ask my permission?

you missed my point tho

@redfox: nope...didn't miss your point...just saying that it's wrong....I'd rather be "policing" and be a defender then be "bashing" and be a hater XD

OMG.... I hope he is not the lead..Acting wise, hope he and yunho stay away and concentrated on singing what they are good at. Improvement, a little bit but that does not mean they are good actors.
