Odds and Ends: Hero in a box

girlfriday: Remember that thing we said when we were drunk?

javabeans: (1) You’re going to have to be more specific, and (2) odds are no.

girlfriday: In the drunk podcast, where we were talking about City Hunter and Healer and wanting to lock those actors in a box, so that they don’t ruin their careers (or taint our memories) with subsequent crap?

javabeans: Ah, where actor love and protectiveness manifest as kidnapping and imprisonment? Yes. I remember that. It’s for their own good!

girlfriday: It just made me think that there were so many others we’d want to lock up, because this happens so often, where someone busts out with an amazing performance in an amazing character, and then you kind of want them never to do another role again. Selfish, yes. But you know we all think it.

javabeans: I mean, to be less criminal about it, it mostly happens when we love the perfect melding of an actor and their role so much that it’s hard to think of them moving on and taking on new (sometimes lesser) characters. It can be most obvious in retrospect, where you see a great actor take bad role after bad role (won’t somebody save Yoon Eun-hye from herself?), but it can also happen when you just love what they’re doing so much right now that you don’t want to see them leave it. Choi Woo-shik in Ho-gu’s Love might be a good example.

girlfriday: I do so love Choi Woo-shik in that role. Like Yoon Shi-yoon as Enrique! I never thought twice about him until he was so bubbly and cute.

javabeans: …and you never thought twice about him when he was then sad and dour in Prime Minister and I, I’m sure.

girlfriday: Yes, see, this is why with the locking up. My prime example will always be Jung Il-woo as Iljimae.

javabeans: Ohhh. Sigh. He was so perfect, and that drama was so perfect, that the Jung Il-woo we see after that, even when he’s great (like in 49 Days and Ramyun Shop), seems like a different person than the Jung Il-woo who was Iljimae.

girlfriday: It ruined him with its perfection, is what it did. Or me. Maybe it just ruined me.

javabeans: That’s what I want with Sung Joon in Shut Up: Flower Boy Band, even though I think he’s totally got it in him to do good things in the future. I just loved him so much as the hurty, angsty, lonely teen rocker boy.

girlfriday: I always secretly hope he’ll bust out a guitar and join a band, no matter what boring character he’s playing.

javabeans: I always see him being all clean-cut afterward, even when he’s adorable like in I Need Romance 3, and I just think, “You sellout. What about the rock and roll, man?”

girlfriday: I’m pretty sure I’ll never stop seeing Yoo Yeon-seok as Chilbongie. Ever. Or Jung Woo as Oppa. I want them to just be those two characters FOREVA.

javabeans: But they have to exist forever in separate dramas. I can’t go through that again.

girlfriday: Don’t you think Shin Mina would be happier going through life as Gu Mi-ho forever?

javabeans: She might eat us all out of cow, but on the upside, that’s good for global warming, right? Then there are people like Lee Je-hoon, who was so amazingly amazing in Bleak Night that I just want to preserve him in that, even though that means he’d have to live his misery in an infinite loop.

girlfriday: Aaaaaaah, I just want to lock him up in that box so that Bleak Night is the only performance that stays with me. It’s that good.

javabeans: Ackkkk! You can’t SAY THAT about Lee Je-hoon!

girlfriday: The box is a metaphor, NOT literal!

javabeans: Too soon, man, too soon. Although, ironically, that might prevent him from the literal box in Secret Door, so…..

girlfriday: See, it’s a win-win!

javabeans: MOVING ON, I say Choi Jin-hyuk in It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl, which is strange because it’s probably the worst drama he’s done, but it’s the one I liked him the most in. He was so, so sweet and earnest and good and reliable all those things were really hot.

girlfriday: Even more than Gumiho Daddy? I dunno…

javabeans: Okay, somebody may have a bad boy thing more than somebody else. Me, I liked him being devoted and responsible.

girlfriday: BORING.

javabeans: He was like Se-jong in Persevere, Gu Hae-ra, but less angsty! Goddamn, if only Daddy’s Girl weren’t so G-rated. He got maybe one good piggyback ride and that was it, but at least it was with Moon Chae-won. And then he had to go ruin it with Heirs and Emergency Couple.

girlfriday: I guess I do have a bad boy thing, because I found Lee Sang-yoon so dull until he was Ha Woo-jin in Liar Game.

javabeans: He should never do anything else. Because I’m not so sure he has it in him to pull a repeat in something else.

girlfriday: I sort of think that about Jung Eun-ji, even though I still really really like her. It’s just that nothing she’s done since Answer Me 1997 is even remotely close to the awesomeness of her debut.

javabeans: This just highlights how choosing the right project is as important as doing a good job in it, because no matter how great you are, do I really want to see Yoochun being a cop three times in a row? And I say that out of love! Even if I let him out of his sageuk princey box, I’d want a different kind of role for him, regardless of how good Sensory Couple may/may not be.

girlfriday: But… but… I love that sageuk princey box, especially for Yoochun! I loved his nerdy scholar in Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

javabeans: Nooooo, I meant Rooftop Prince, obviously, because what are you smoking? He was so awesome and hilarious as the haughty tracksuit-wearing prince/chaebol/hobo!

girlfriday: What. You’re the one who’s smoking something. How can you prefer the goofy, clueless, childish, not-quite-all-there guy with troll hair to the adorable perfect scholar boy?

javabeans: I think you just answered your own question. How is this not obvious? Well, I guess on the upside, at least we’ll never fight over men?

girlfriday: Okay, it’s a tough job, but I’ll take all the bad boys, rebels, vampires, and misfits out of your hair. Since you clearly don’t want to be bothered by hotness. You can have all the dim, sweet nerds.

javabeans: Yes, please. Thank you.

girlfriday: One more friendship preserved.

Agreed... Thats exactly what I was telling the 16 year old niece of one of my friends! The bad boys with a heard of gold are like Dramaland people, it is pure fiction!

In real life the less volatile second lead is probably a better choice. One who wont be wrist grabbing or force kissing you. HAHA

YES. Lee Sang-yoon should just be Ha Woo-jin forever. I tried watching him in Angel Eyes and I was like “who the eff are you?” If not HWJ, then he should just play perpetually scowling, grumpy-pants, genius characters from now on. He has found his niche.

I approach every Lee Minho drama with lots of caution because I loved him as Yoonsung in City Hunter. Perfect role for him that showed the acting chops that he does have. I'm hoping he gets pickier with roles and get the more mature ones. It's past time he does so. He never should've done Heirs.

I don't want Heirs to be the last memory of LMH's acting

Granted Heirs is not everyone’s cup of tea. Yet nevertheless, I liked the fact that I didn’t have to like nor was I required to automatically swoon for Lee Min-Ho’s & Kim Woo-Bin’s characters. Instead, I could just focus on appreciating their performances and the character journeys/arcs for Kim Tan & Choi Young-Do. In this case both men played unlikable and utterly compelling characters you love to hate. But be that as it may, both Kim Tan & Choi Young-Do possessed an intangible charisma.

It’s good to see actors challenging themselves by stepping outside of their comfort zones and trying their hand at tackling something different in order to grow as an actor/artist.

Hey August, thanks for the links below :) I'll go there and respond...I just want to say something regarding Kim Tan and Choi YD, I don't think they played unlikable characters, I personally loved how pained and tortured they both were and even in their worst lows they still possessed some integrity to stand up to "wrongs doings" against their friends. They fought with their inner devils and came out winning in the end, something most of us do on a daily basis, granted not on such a grand scale yet...We all still do. I loved this drama, I loved all the black in it, I loved all the despair, the lack of resolution, and I especially enjoyed the performances (minus the botched makeup wounds job).

They were supposedly teenagers/High schoolers but they played their roles with such maturity and integrity that I'm still baffled at all the hate this drama is getting...Eh, at the end of all things we say, to each their own! The Heirs gets my vote and I'll keep tooting its horn till the last post on DB lol :D

List of actors I wanna lock up:
1. Ji Chang Wook as Ta Hwan (Empress Ki): he won't ever play a character as complex as this. As much as his character is really heartbreaking, I really love him so much in this role.

2. Kim Woo Bin as Young Do (Heirs): maybe with the continuation of his redemption.. haha

3. Park Shin Hye as In Ha (Pinocchio): improving leaps and bounds from Heirs.. and I think this is her most comfortable role to date.

4. Jo Hyun Jae as Han Kang (49 Days) Kang ah..... 'nuff said

5. Ji Sung in Kill Me Heal Me... he can play all characters he wants from now on, whether badass guy, suicidal guy, nice guy or even crossdressing guy! LOL

Okay, I obviously have more actors than this small list, but now can't think anyone else.

@kanz

T____T But I'm NOT used to feeling this way about actors. Yes, I crush on them, swoon, find it hard to breathe, etc. etc. But I'm fairly rational. It's almost as if I can control or turn a switch off if I want to.
but jcw just makes me happy and confused, and fuzzy, unsettled, and back to being happy, and just batshit insane. I don't think it's healthy. This is not normal for me, and I don't know what to do with myself. lol.

0

oh yes, so ji sub as joo gun !!! He and gong hyo jin in master's sun are my OTP!

0

I cant even with JCW!! So different from other actors like he is relatable and feels real.

0

Hi Platae,

Sorry for being too curious..but i have a clue on why this is happening to you...by any chance did you have a crush on someone who behaved similar to JCW ? like say he smoked but you still liked him ? and you relate the behavior of JCW to your past memories due to this ?
I asked this bcoz i have a similar problem when i see a picture of JCW i get similar problems that i cant stare at him and then i think back to what must be going on in his head when he posted the picture..its like i can enter his mind and see whats happening..but that is bcoz i had someone like him whom i used to crush like crazy and observe everything about him..so i know what is the source of my obsession with JCW :)

0

Hi Trinity,

No worries. Curiosity rarely ever kills the cat. ;)

Butto answer your question, I've NEVER had a crush like the one I'm having with jcw. For one, smoking is a deal breaker for me, in the same level that being rude jerk, or a compulsive cheater would be. That's why I'm so puzzled why it doesn't matter with him. Well, I guess that the fact that I will never get to kiss him or smell him perhaps factors in it. XDD

I'm fairly rational, regarding my feelings. If anything, I sometimes think I'm a bit emotionless and cold. I don't often get infatuated about men, and even if I do, it gets abated really quickly, oftentimes by a turn-off. I even find it hard to relate to declarations of love/perverseness/hunger/obsessiveness, even if it's just fangirling. In fact, I'm fairly sure jcw's case is a first for me. It's both fascinating, and utterly disarming, in a scary way.

And if I feel so little for celebrities, who are basically packaged men for our fantasies, I feel even less for "real" men.

So I can't even dream about how I would react if I met a real-life jcw-like man. You're a lucky girl to have experienced it. <3

I think it's hard for me with jcw because there's so much of what I like about him in his characters, that I find it hard to separate the two, which I don't have a problem doing usually. And maybe the combination of both worlds is irresistible? I don't know. I feel like losing my mind. My thoughts aren't very clear right now.

0

@platae oh boy...I thought I was going insane but your situation is worse.
in Nigeria,we ve a saying that explains ur feelings. We call it, "This one has passed 'be careful' o"-meaning,u 've gone to point of no return lol.

Twill help if u stay away from Topics, articles or threads that has his name mentioned. :)

Thank you for the reply Platae. I used to be the way you described ( infact its so scary that you are describing yourself but i m feeling that its about me :O) until i met this guy. Its totally one-sided but i suddenly started to crush on him even though i saw him many times before. This happened when he was in a play acting /singing as someone else ( so this is comparable to JCW acting onscreen) but here's the thing...i liked his voice and eyes so then on i kept following his every move in college. I slowly realized all the habits he had (smoking etc) but still the crush never went away but the funny thing is i never spoke to him about it...in JCW case its the same thing again for me..his eyes and voice have some special effect on me ( i thought this would never repeat ;) but yeah i can understand every word you said since i used to so emotionless until i knew this guy and now JCW and as for other real men i m not comfortable at all in discussing my inner feelings with them.
I really want to help you here since i used to feel so lost during that phase and i didnt have anybody to share what i feel...its like i like this guy and i dont even think he is exactly like how i think he is and infact nobody would even believe ( coz everybody thought i m so cold person) even i tried the trick that he might be gay/has girlfriend/ i m not his type to convince myself but it didnt work...but i finally gave up and thought in this way - do not overthink.. just accept that you like this guy no matter how he is , and then give yourself sometime to analyze , since you are quite practical i m sure your brain will decide on things and come to a logical conclusion. This helped me and i was able to figure out that this crush would not let me follow my path , it takes time but it works if you accept it as it is. So hope this technique works for you as well :)

Thank you for the support! Don't be offended, but I'm quite surprised your words actually helped me settle my mind a bit. Haha.

So thank you for sharing your story with me. I think many people share the same experience of feeling more or less that way at one point in their lives. A simple crush, which never started into anything, and probably never will. It's just that I've lived for so long without feeling that way, that I almost believed I would never feel that way, so it comes as a shock.

Although as you said, with the jcw's expressive eyes, it probably should be more of a shock that I'm shocked.

But as many are not as emotionally stunted as I do, they probably have experienced this kind of crazy earlier than I have, and are now used to it enough to know how to cope with it. You never start knowing how to walk after all, you learn to.
So I'm quite behind everyone else in the lesson, and panicking at how epically I'm failing to cope.

In fact, at my first realisation that I was starting to be infatuated and losing control, my immediate reaction was to search for proofs of him smoking. Because I knew that if he did, that would be a surefire to douse any power he would have on my feelings/hormones, and whatnot. It's my emergency protocol if you will. And when I found out that he did, I was never more relieved, until I realised that it did not make my attraction change an ounce. That's when I really started to panic. The emergency protocol that has worked 100% of the time so far in my life has let me down. Then I tried the gay trick, which usually I don't even have to use, but had an effect before, and this time... no effect. And on went the scenarios, and on, they were trampled. I stopped short at making him an utter villain in my mind though. I feel like he deserve more than my undeserved unjustified and self-serving character assassination of his person, just for the sake of soothing my ruffled feathers.

I'm so used to being able to feel in control of this one aspect of my life, my attraction to the other sex, that losing that is like losing my sense of understanding of who I am, almost my sense of identity?

I'm the kind of person who likes to make sense of things. So to me, it doesn't make sense that I'm feeling that way about a complete stranger, whom I don't even know, have never interacted with, don't know a single personal thing about that I can verify, and is all wrong for me. And I don't like not being able to make sense of anything, and especially of myself. I'm not unfamiliar with hormones working its chemistry, but usually, my brain can quickly overcome that, and even erase their effect with reasoning. Seems like my brain is not working properly. I'm guessing that's where the expression brain turns to mush comes from.

And like you did to, I'm pretty sure that he's not exactly what I think he is. I think more than any thing, I'm scared of the feeling of disappoint that comes after...

0

....after this infatuation is over. Disappointment over him, for whatever he will do to make me stop liking him, and disappointment that this feeling didn't last. Because in my mind, I can't help but thinking that this will be over after all, as it had been for all the previous ones. It's never pleasant when you stop liking someone, and even more so when you liked that someone strongly. So why not make it over as soon as possible before it gets too far? Well, thing is, I realised that I can't. Even if I wanted to. lol.

I know for sure that this feeling will end eventually. It's just simply not sustainable. But it doesn't help me to know that. I want it to end. Now.
I almost feel like throwing a tantrum that things are not working my way. lol. It's not a pleasant feeling. But you helped ease it somehow, so thank you. ^^

Same here. Plenty of korean actors smoke, so I don't necessarily despise them because of their culture, but as I said. Turn off. Still find them attractive in the aesthetic sense, and charming, but I cannot go crazy over someone who smokes. At least, I thought I couldn't. Until now.

It's like with him, things don't apply anymore. He smokes? Doesn't matter. (I pretend that) he's gay, he has one girlfriend, 2 girlfriends, secretly married and has a baby, got his whole face redone, etc. and it still doesn't matter. He still make my heart flutter.

I can't even go on his intagram. That's how crazy he made me.

Usually, when I like and/or crush on actor, I basically stalk them by google their pictures, etc. etc. and swoon at the pretty and handsome.

With him, it's the reverse. I run away from it as if the hounds of the devil are chasing after me. I almost had a panic attack when I goggled his picture. The first time I tried, it was ok. I actually stayed there for about 1 minute. But it got worse and worse over time. Now, I can't even stay there for more than 2 seconds.

And I just tried a video on his ig, and started closing it after less than 1 second, and started hyperventilating, and fangirling, and pulling my hair out and stomping all at the same time. Overreaction much? lol. You would think the video gave me a burn or something looking at the panic with which I closed it.

I. Have. A. Problem. Big time.

I know I sound insane. I probably am.

I agree that a lot of Korean actors/actresses smoke and it is a major turn-off. But hey, maybe that's the signal for us to stop obsessing over them and get a life (HA! As if!)...

Poor platae,

0

It's mental, but I'm like both of you! My heart palpitates madly when I look at him.
I even watched his drama episode with KARA Gyuri because of him. And despite the atrocious acting from almost everyone but him, and massively juvenile script, I fancied him even more after it. His acting was really perfect as the disdainful angel, and he's lovely to look at.

Yes, he smokes.
You would think from how fit he is, and how he likes to work out that he doesn't, but many Korean men do.
I could tell right away from his lips, like I could tell from Lee Min Ho's lips and complexion (not so much with JCW's). There was a certain chaff dryness and blueish tinge.
In any case, I googled it to satisfy my curiosity, and he doesn't hide the fact that he smokes at all, which is in his favor. There's an instagram picture of him with a pack of cigarette on a table dining with friends, he talks about being unable to smoke and drink publicly when his role as wholesome Donghae got so famous, and also about how he didn't know how to connect with Ha Ji Won at first because she didn't smoke (there's also pictures of him on set of Empress smoking with his co-stars Joo Jin Moo), etc. I don't know if he still smokes, but from his lips, I would say yes.

okay.. I need to admit that I kind of love characters in disguise or have dual characters.. like Healer (my current favs which beats all my other superheroes in disguise).. City Hunter, Bridal Mask, Joseon Gunman, Two Weeks (fugitive in disguise) (wait, does Hanjo fugitive in disguise too ??), Time Between Dog and Wolf. haa, enough Lee Joonki there.

I love those dramas where I always waiting for the moment their disguise to be reveal. u know, my heart goes thump.. thump.. *Chae Youngshin style*

but yup, we always love their previous character more than the recent ones. where we wish to lock them a box. but they need to move on.. (while I can't) I always end up watching their previous dramas with my fav character and say.. "I never imagine City Hunter and Kim Tan are the same guy."

The moment I started reading the article I automatically thought of YEH. I really like her when she did Goong and all the more when she did Coffee Prince. Because I really do like her I have watched almost all of the dramas she did afterwards but gahhhhhh... It would end in: I finish the drama while losing some of my hair or I stop watching in the middle or I don't start it at all.

There are really a lot of actors and actresses that I would prefer if they stayed in a particular character if only they chose follow up projects better from the previous ones they did. Or I could just pretend they never did any projects that ruined it for me and keep the those that I love on an endless loop of replay.

I am about to commit sacrilege here, but yoon Eun hye is really not a good actress. Maybe she would get better roles offers if she was a better actress.

I think YEH is actually a pretty good actress, she just doesn't have much luck in choosing the best dramas or roles. And tbh, I don't fault her much for that or any other actor as well. They sort of take a risk with drama productions, they read a few scripts and hope for the best. You'll never know what direction that drama will take, you notice that a lot of dramas go downhill in later episodes, right?

PSH hasn't done a lot of high school roles, it's just the image that's stuck with her. She did say in her one of her recent interviews, that she'll not take up a student role as her next project. I think Pinocchio showed her worth and I hope she'll choose better roles and projects too.

Even Takuya Kimura in "Long Vacation," which to me was another example of near-perfection, lost to you, in terms of how slowly he got around to recognizing his feelings for Minami, and doing something about them.

Honestly, as much as I'd like my faves to be in only quality productions, the reality is much far from that. Most actors have their wins and losses. And that will happen naturally, there's failure and success in everyone's life.

When you find characters that are endearing (like Hogu, I mean who's not in love?) and are portrayed by your faves or likable actors, you'll want to keep them there forever. Too bad if they stay in that position, they'll not really grow as actors. When they do various roles, good or bad, it's a chance for growth. And it's so important to see my faves develop and improve their skill.

Also, there's this thing I don't really understand. If an actor chooses a bad role, does it change your perception of that actor, so much so, that you'll not want to see them in anything else? I get that a character may tarnish the image of the actor for you but some people may be prejudiced against them and their future works, which seems a bit unwarranted. Like to hold their bad roles against them seems a bit much to me.

Then again, it's natural for some to be fickle-minded. Opinions change and develop all the time, I guess.

After listening to your Healer podcast, I spent my Lunar New Year break re-watching City Hunter and dreaming up scenarios where Healer and CH bro it out.

I'm also enjoying Hogu's Love as well. I'm quite surprised at myself for liking Uee in her role. Hogu is adorbs.

Weirdly enough, I started liking Lee Je Hoon in the disaster that was Fashion King!

Aside from the characters mentioned above, I want to lock up:

1) Jung Kyung Ho in Smile, You (and his character in a little movie called My Lovely Week)

2) Hyun Bin in My Lovely Sam Soon

3) Joo Won in Ojakyo Brothers

4) Gong Yoo in Coffee Prince

5) Jang Geun Seuk in Doremifasolatido

I'm sure there's more but I can't remember who else!

@DD first I like that you go against the norm, second, I'm curious about your favorite shows.
I checked out the links @August shared and wow,do people have negative things to say about it and the leads.to say I'm surprised by the comments would be an understatement. But I guess my reaction is because I absolutely loved it, it's the drama I have most rewatched and I never leave the country without it.it's my feel good drama but the next time I watch it, I'll look for the faults.

0

I'm smiling ear to ear cuz I've just had a discussion with both revlow and alua the other day lol and to think they're both culprits in the MNIKSS hate :P Can I say yay?!!

I agree with all matters discussed in those comments, mostly for me it was the obnoxious female character and the most boring male character (Though HB is one of my very faves, I totally couldn't stand his character in that drama, I stopped watching after epi 2). I enjoy subtle performances, I enjoy deep conflicts that aren't garnished with psychotic behavior, or the "I'm so pathetic you must save me from myself" type of character (Just watched king of high school and OMG I wanted to commit hypothetical suicide from the hate I had for that moronic noona character! Dear lord save me from such pathetic-ness!!).

I guess this is for Klava's question, I can't name many names yet but anything that is not totally bogus, obnoxious, ridiculous, over the top, unrealistic, too loud, too boring, too repetitious, too cliched (I don't mind the triangles and jealousy as long as they're not absolutely boring and done to death before...Something new and exciting is always welcome) I hate vicious female characters, I hate loud screeching banshees, I hate the King of high school noona type, I hate women who are either evil or spineless...I love women who can be confused/conflicted/even on the verge of tipping to the dark side, but who always manage to weigh the good vs the bad and who always mange to save their soul in the end. I don't know why I'm concentrating on female characters, but seemingly they're the ones I usually have an issue with in KD world...Most male characters are by the book, either too charming or too weird/whiney/boring so yeah I don't have much to say about them.

I'll come back to you with a list maybe in a few months but for now I am going about this by loving individual performances rather than the entire package...If you ask me why, I'll tell you because I'm watching recs and most of the recs I've watched I didn't completely love, but I did love certain actors and performances within them and so I keep searching, enjoying and compiling faves...Right now I'm in the "discovery" phase lol...Soon enough I'll reach the "expert" phase and I'll be able to discuss such things with a much stronger footing. For now I'll just say cheers :)

Off topic but I am now scared of post military service dramas :P , for eg. Rain, Ji Hyun Woo and now the mighty Hyun Bin !!!! I am worried for two reasons mostly, 1. SJK will be back :) but I don't know what will he choose for his next project
2. Many good actors (specially '87 born) may enlist this year 1st obviously JCW , Healer was a break through but after 2yrs he will need a break through again, then seo in guk, lee sung GI, though I am not much worried for LMH, he has an incomparable Fan base!!! After Gangnam 1970 , I don't think 2 years gap can even scratch his worldwide popularity!!!!!

Seems to me, statistically, there are more misses than hits for a lead actor/actress. Combination of natural talent, great work ethics, picking excellent/suitable projects, and rising above mediocre roles is hard to come by.

Supporting actor/actress tends to be under less scrutiny when they or project don't do well. But also "shine more" when they do well.

LMH is not enlisting this year. He's promised his fans two projects before leaving (probably) next year, a drama later on in the year and a film, possibly in the next couple of months. He's a fabulous actor to recon, he'll be here for many many years and he'll have so many great works under his belt. Mark my words!

If you guys are going to think this way, sorry to break it to you, you'll never be a fan of any actor for long. Actors seek to become different characters and play different roles, good bad or ugly...I've been a fan of Ryan Gosling for so long I can't remember. Along great movies like Blue Valentine he's done shitty crap like drive, gangster squad etc...I still think he's a brilliant actor and will watch all his films, even if I don't think they're brilliant or he's had a great role I still believe in him and the fact that he's a GREAT actor (notwithstanding looks) will remain a FACT...I may like or dislike some of his works but I'll always be a fan, I don't understand the wishy washy mentality at all!! Great actors may play inferior roles/characters but even in those they always manage to engage and entertain, that's what they're aim is, to entertain. And I can vouch that all my biases always entertain. It may not always be an oscar-worthy story but they're performance will always have layers and nuances that other "lesser" performers will never capture.

their performance*

Required fields are marked *

I think there are two different issues here: admiration for an actor, and love for one of their characters as an independent fictional being. When you love a particular character, a little (or a lot) of that will transfer to the actor, and you will follow their work eagerly afterwards. If later characters are less appealing/rounded, or just plain boring, it makes you miss the one you loved a little more intensely. And if the pattern of disappointment is repeated, you may lose your interest in the actor altogether.

So, the point that was being made, I think, is not necessarily that if a good performance (say Yoon Eun Hye in Coffee Prince) is followed by less appealing ones, the actor suddenly becomes a terrible one, but that you feel for them and wish they could show again what they are capable of, and give you another character to love. "Boxing" actors into a particular character I'd say is not so much about protecting a fangirl crush, as about nostalgia; a bit like a part of you wishes your baby would never grow up...

Required fields are marked *

You make sense of course, but my point was that as a fan of an actor, to write them off just because they played a couple of bad roles is unfathomable to me. I guess since I'm always the fan of the actor first before the character, by this I mean I am a fan of their ability to interpret a character into life and the performance they give rather than think of a character as an individual being/entity. The character could have never existed had it not been for this actor to begin with, my admiration of them goes beyond a fluke or two and I hardly ever blame them for a bad character, becz even when they play a boring or lifeless role they're still EXTREMELY GOOD at doing so. So what I'm trying to say is, I love and cherish the factory not the product. As in each production line there can always be rejects.

I suppose it may depend on the actor and the character. Sometimes the actor becomes larger than their characters (say Robert de Niro), and their screen presence is powerful enough to draw you in, regardless of the quality of the product. Other times, love for the character may come first (say Mr Darcy), and although the actor must be given a lot of credit, it ought to be shared with the writer and director.

I think both are possible; I'll admit I have to be won over by a character before I take interest in an actor, but after that, I tend to be quite loyal, if not always equally intense :-) . That, I suppose, is a tribute to the actor's true quality rather than my own loyalty, so ultimately I have to agree with you on that. :-)

Perhaps it is a matter of a sense vs. sensibility approach to fandom; sometimes admiration is deep and steady, other times it is intense and superficial :-) . But I do not think they are mutually exclusive; just different kinds of enjoyment at different times.

This is probably why I never blame or praise writers/directors for my admiration of a certain actor that convinces me to become their fan. Yes those 3 are responsible for the final product that is the character/story/film I enjoy and cherish, but if the first two are to be solely responsible then just about anyone can become a brilliant performer no?

While the writer/director are responsible for content and execution the actor is ultimately responsible for the soul of the performance! A great actor can make the shitiest lines sound amazing and the most mediocre direction come to life, at least that's how I see it. Nonetheless, I do understand that when ppl marathon dramas (that are available with great abundance and that address just about any topic under the sun, at times having the most ridiculous purpose) they tend to do much more "mental spring cleaning" than the normal folks who watch a select few just because they were moved by them or they told stories that hit close to home.

I fall under the latter category so my brain has less clutter to get rid of. Therefore I tend to hold on to my faves for a LONG LONG time, unless they commit a murder or turn into human vegetables or menaces to society, then they remain my faves.

0

No apology necessary, I am no one's anti-fan :-) . It is not that I dislike him either; I am interested in his career, will consider watching everything he does (within reason; Heirs never stood a chance), but he doesn't quite bring out the fangirl in me. Perhaps I wish his characters had a little bit more sense of humour, but not everyone will need that.

Final note for me too: what awards show was that? I have no idea what he is like outside of his characters. I am really curious now to see that look...

0

Oh hey I didn't catch your reply since it was under my other post...No it's absolutely fine I just discovered him and have been devouring all his news. If you haven't seen him interact outside of his characters your missing out!! I've spent days watching all his dramas BTS videos, interviews and some of his fan meets... lol the boy is hilarious and adorable to boot!!

The award show was 2013 SBS drama awards. Oddly enough I was watching it for So Ji Sub, but what grabbed my attention was LMH (whose name I didn't even know at the time) it was a gesture and an exchange of looks between him and KWB and I was like who is this guy?? I must check him out. To me he's very handsome, but that wasn't the draw. Something about him just spiked my interest, but then it's always like that with me, I see something in an actor/actress and I'm almost always on point and they never disappoint :)

0

Answering your post below :-)

Sure, I would never take credit away from an actor; all I am saying is that a good character is a collective effort, but when a character is truly memorable, credit is never to the actor alone. Of course good actors can rise above a bad script and salvage it, and there is no doubt that the soul of the character is due to them.

But about the difference between marathon and selective watchers, I am not so sure; I see it working the opposite way. The more dramas you watch, the more difficult you become to impress, and finally it is only those that truly stand out (for you as a viewer, of course) that you will remember.

Conversely, I have read comments around here, with which I would agree, that you tend to keep a soft spot for your first dramas, regardless of their objective quality, perhaps because you are less aware of the clichés and curiosity is still stronger. Mine was Personal Taste (and yet, not a fan of LMH).

Sadly, how can you know whether a drama will move you, or make you lose the will to live, until you watch it? :-) The cast or plot summary alone don't really help. Which is why I lurk around here, weighing recommendations carefully before investing my time :-)

Oddly enough, I'm one of those who if I love an actor/actress I watch all their works lol I guess that's my method of selection. As for dramas in particular, I'm a newbie so I do admit that I started with some recs, loved some hated some, fell back on my old and tested method of selection (listed above) becoming a bigger fan of some and moving on from others.

I am a huge LMH fan lol (sorry pal) and it started with something (believe it or not it wasn't even a drama or role I've watched and enjoyed) as silly as the way he looked at someone at an award show. I knew just by looking at that tiny interaction that I was looking at someone who's undeniably great! This is what I meant when I said a great actor can make the most trite of performances look so fabulous and so much more enjoyable (not discrediting the team effort but stressing the importance of the pawn or in this case the tool aka the actor)

First dramas, well no not really, in my case that doesn't hold true but I do realize it is probably the case for many drama watchers so good for them if that's something they feel good about and it satisfies their acting taste buds :)

I'm going to end on a final note, that as long as my interest is captured by an actor regardless of the role's charm, or lack thereof, I'll continue to be a fan.

0

@randomdelurker

Well expressed.

Being a fan often seems to be quite time and energy consuming. For some fans, there must be subconscious accounting of "return on investment."

"love for one of their characters as an independent fictional being" is pretty much as far as I go for any performer. Upside is very little anger or disappointment.

I know LBY first from IHYV, then her husband from Good Friends and Running Man, so KMHM is my first encounter with him in drama world. They're both awesome and they truly love each other. I remember LBY said JS would quit acting if she asked to, and JS said LBY changes her sleep pattern to match with his shooting schedule (boy I envy them!!!). And now a child is on the way and they have pretty much everything. They just need one more Daesang trophy to decorate their home (they have one from LBY) and I really really hope they can add it by the end of this year.

P.S: now I know how hard it is to be bias towards a married man. Like KMHM thread in soompi, I need to remind myself frequently like a spell, "Ji Sung is happily married.... Ji Sung is happily married.... Ji Sung is happily married..."

Couldn't have express it better!

There's just that awesome classic role of our fave actors and actresses that'll stay forever in our hearts no matter how melo or makjang they become on their succeeding roles. Couldn't agree more that the more dramas we've seen, the harder we gets to please. It's easy to be popular in a good drama but what lies ahead is the question of staying power.

Yes! Lee Min Ho and Ji Chang Wook indeed will be forever our badass City Hunter and Healer while Lee Sang Yoon will always be the genius human lie detector Ha Woo Jin. Jeon Ji Hyun is just remarkable as Cheon Song Yi. I wish to lock up Yoon Sang Yoon as the quirky Oska with Lee Jong Hyuk on his epic matchmaking skills in Dating Agency Cyrano. Lee Jong Suk is still Park Soo Ha in my eyes and I actually still see Joo Ji Hoon as our Prince Lee Shin. Jang Geun Seuk as Hwang Tae Kyung and Ji Hyun Woo as Kim Bong Doo.

I'm torn though w/ Kim Sun Ah cause she have such strong personality that she carries on her every role. While mostly want to lock her up as Kim Sam Soon, I really like her too as Hwang Ji An in I Do I Do. I really like Kim Soo Hyun both in TMETS and YWCFAS more than in Dream High while Lee Seung Gi both in Brilliant Legacy and in King 2 hearts but not exactly to lock them up on those roles.
