Kolorful Palette: Red wedding [Shine or Go Crazy]
by Fanderay
It’s amazing what a difference a title can make. If I hadn’t specifically been looking at historical dramas for the sake of drawing I don’t think I ever would have given this drama a second glance or even realized who was starring in it. Based on the title alone I think I would have assumed it was an extra low-budget weekend drama or a rom-com with a terrible premise. I can’t say it’s got the making of a favorite drama for me, but Shine or Go Crazy is actually pretty decent, although I still have no idea what the title has to do with the show itself. Perhaps something is lost in translation?
In a nutshell, this drama follows the story of a supposedly cursed Prince Wang So (played by Jang Hyuk) who can change his unlucky fate through a relationship with one of two women. I’ve only watched the first two episodes, but the first time he meets Shin Yool (played by Oh Yeon-Seo) she coerces him into a fake marriage to avoid marrying someone else (I’m hoping it becomes a permanent marriage eventually!). This drawing comes from shortly after that wedding.
Although their “wedding night” has lots of nice moments I primarily drew this because it’s not every day that I get to draw wedding clothes silhouetted in pretty light. Plus it’s always nice to see a pleasant red wedding (any Game of Thrones fans out there?). I also think this night was the most important part of the episode in terms of character development. After being told his whole life that he is bad luck, Wang So realizes for the first time that he can actually do some good in another person’s life (that seems like a pretty key revelation when it comes to making life choices). This specific shot is right before he leaves, when he kisses Shin Yool on the forehead. It’s not really a romantic kiss, but more of a thank you to Shin Yool for showing him his own value and changing his perspective. Of course he doesn’t even know what she looks like so it will be difficult for them to reunite, but she seems rather precocious and bold so I’m sure she’ll make it happen.
It’s sort of funny that they both went through with this fake marriage not knowing that the other was actually royalty. It hasn’t been revealed in the show yet, but according to descriptions Shin Yool is actually the last Princess of Balhae. Balhae is apparently a mixed Korean-Manchurian empire, but I know very little about it so I’m not sure what the implications are politically. This is a historical drama though, so I’m sure it’ll be dramatic!
In all honesty though, the tone so far hasn’t been all that typical. I find that historical dramas are primarily melo and action (even with humor mixed in) or fall firmly into the fusion category, but Shine or Go Crazy seems to fall in the middle. It’s quite light-feeling despite some pretty serious subject matter, but isn’t quite a rom-com either. That’s just fine with me since I tend to get tired of the endless wailing and crying that some sageuks feature, and tend to enjoy the fusion-y variety more if they feature a young cast (think Sungkyunkwan Scandal). I do think the danger of a middle ground is that it has the potential to be less memorable, but so far I’m digging the vibe and find it an easy drama to watch (sometimes when I start a sageuk I feel like I have to detangle all the knots in my brain to sort out all the history and characters). I wasn’t bored though.
It’s still too early to say how enticing I’ll end up finding the overall story, but so far there have certainly been some fantastic looking scenes and great instrumentals (both of which are large contributors to my enjoyment). Another thing I like in particular is that Wang So’s fate can be viewed as a curse or a self-fulfilling prophecy (and I like to think the writers did it on purpose). It was foretold that he would cause bloodshed, and as a result his own mother tried to poison him, but her plan went awry and instead Wang So’s brother was killed along with numerous staff. Is that really a curse, or would it all have been avoided if his mom didn’t believe in the curse and thus didn’t try to murder him? Does he actually need a woman to change his fate, or will his fate only change because he believes it?
Since last week’s attempt at digital watercolor didn’t go so smoothly, that’s what I decided to use again, and I think I almost have my settings back where I want them, at least for this one medium. Unfortunately I reset everything last week in a futile troubleshooting attempt, so every week should be an adventure for a while! I’m sort of liking it though, since fiddling around is helping me to discover some new things. I guess change is ultimately a good thing, whether it’s the result of software failure or forced fake marriage. I think the whole fake marriage thing looks like a little more fun though.

They did explain in the latest episode why the title is "Shine or Go Crazy". It has something to do with Wang So's fate, either he'll shine or go crazy. Wang So's story line is a bit crazy (lots of going ons in his life, ha) so I can't really guess how this story is going to end. Nevertheless, the story is interesting enough for me to get hooked.

Well, in my point of view, Wang So will Shine and Go Crazy. The King of Goryeo who Wang So is based of, was a King of revolution in the laws involving his kingdom, that's his Shine. But I don't remenber that he goes nuts like other member said here, he dies because of sudden ilness. The Go Crazy reference (I'm only comparing to the real story), is because to the point of view of the nobles, he was indeed crazy because of his reform on the government. I think he also killed some nobles if I recall the true facts. So he indeed went Crazy in that aspect. "Bloodshed" is a word Wang So says that's necessary to rule a kindgom, so it is a connection to what he will do in the future as King.
I don't know how close they will follow the real story. I would love to believe that those 3 kids at the begining were Wang So and Shin Yool children, and that Shin Yool became a Queen because she was actually the "first" wife. BUT...the real story tells us that Queen Daemok (Wang So's wife) had five children with him and the drama's synopsis says its Lee Honey character who is Queen Daemok. Sadly though, I love Shin Yool and hate the other wife princess. But historical dramaland doesn't always gives us a great ending on the romantic pair (unless is The Moon That Embraces The Sun). And this one he based on real facts, which is more disappointing. Those 3 kids at the begining might be Lee Honey's ones. And Shin Yool might've died because she is always sick. It's just my opinion, and I HOPE I'm wrong.

*some spoiler mentioned*
Well, I think the drama really emphasizes that it's only based on true history, but it won't follow the true events. I'm hoping it's more like empress ki kind, where it just loosely basing the characters from history, but tells its own story however the writer likes it. Cause I really really like Shin Yool, and wouldn't mind a completely unbelievable event happening to her where she's completely cured...and would hate this drama to have a sad ending. That being said, yeah...sageuk tends to not give us happy ending for romantic pairing...I'm still left bitter from Jang Hyuk's sageuk drama where he ended up killed AND not be with his girl (too lazy to google and can't remember the title).
Anywhooo...awesome drawing, Fanderay...and I hope you keep watching. I've enjoyed this drama so far.

Chuno right? I remenber he died on that one. Great Drama but bad ending.
Let's hope they change a bit from the real facts like you said. Shin Yook deserves a great ending with Wang So. The other princess (I always forget Lee Honey's character because I dislike her) is kinda mean, manipulating and boring. Shin Yool is more bright girl, funny and kind-hearted. BUT also very inteligent as well.
I wished this drama would be more popular, it's been a while since I enjoy such a show, I even can't wait for new episodes and I thing I'm becoming obsessed with it. The last episode had bigger ratings, I hope it will cling more, this drama deserves more attention.

aigoo. Princess Yeowon is so so so well acted. First you hate her, then you love her and then you're not sure to feel. Honey Lee did such a good job in being a villain without being a villain.

Jang Hyuk’s character died in two sageuk epics – Chuno and Tree with Deep Roots. But in the first one, he didn’t even get the girl when he looked for her in the entire gooddamn drama. I’m still bitter about that ending too.
I think this drama will be different though. Because its categorized as rom com and is very light compared to the usual sageuk melo-tragedies. The first scene had the two butterflies hung on a wedding gown that looks like the one they wore in the first episodes. I’ll take that as a hint that Wang So and Shin Yool are now the King and Queen alive and happy together. There’s a disclaimer before every episode that they are not going by accurate history so I think that's a possibility. Plus the novel where the drama is based off had a happy ending too.

What novel? I want to know about that.
Shin Yool is based on his second wife right? Gwangjong of Goryeo second wife Lady Gyeonghwagung, although Princess of Balhae is just for the drama story, because she was a nice of Wang So.
But I'm happy they are not going accurate with the real history, so that gives me hope to dream for a happy ending for Wang So and Shin Yool.
If they are willing to take this further, it would be awesome for her, as the "real first" wife to become queen. But then again, wiki d addicts says Lee Honey will be Queen Daemok. Ahhhhh so irrating!

The drama is based off a Korean novel of the same name. I don't quite know enough about it but from whatever I've read, the drama is closely following most of the major plot lines but improving on the weaknesses. I think the writer is doing a fantastic job in that dept.
Shin Yool is not based off a real life figure. She's a completely fictional character because Lady Gyeonghwagung is the daughter of the second King (and Wang So's niece) who gets married to him after he becomes king. I doubt they'd introduce her in the drama at all because this is a fictionalized tale. Honey Lee plays Queen Daemok who was Wang So's half sister in real life and introduced early on as that even in the drama. So she's definitely going to be Queen at some point although I suspect Shin Yool would be the 'real' Queen in the end after their first marriage is revealed to Goryeo.
I suppose this can be wishful thinking, but the writer knows how popular the OTP is, so I'm very hopeful they'll give us the ending we want!

Tree with Deep Roots is a very smart drama. One of the smartest shows I've watched. The writing is definitely better than Chuno. But Jang Hyuk had a lot to work with in terms of his character in Chuno so he really shined in that role, his performance was amazing.
If you enjoyed watching Punch then Tree With Deep Roots is another brilliantly written drama that you would enjoy.

I'm not sure how far ahead you are in the show - I'm guessing you didn't reach episode 4? - because most of the questions asked are already answered =) Shin Yool was revealed to be the Princess of Balhae in the backstory with her mother throwing her in a river. The drama is called Shine or Go Crazy because it's related to Wang-so's fate when he becomes the King.
Also, I highly doubt the Queen tried to poison Wang So. It was most likely the uncle but the drama is yet to reveal the true culprit. I saw it more as a plan to get the cursed prince banished from the capital in an attempt to take him out of crown contention or possibly mess with the King. This was hinted when the King said he knew it wasn't Wang So's fault but he had no choice but to send him away.
Anyway, I haven't been following this drama on a weekly basis because I've been extremely busy. But now that I'm caught up, I think it's most definitely amongst the best currently airing shows. The chemistry between the leads is really great and there's a fairytale feel with all the prince, princess, curses, stars and fate references. It's nothing new but very exciting and well-acted none the less. I watched 4 episodes in a row last week and time really flew.
Hopefully the pace is kept at the same level with some real romance to follow. I loved the scene you drew and would call it the most romantic and dreamy yet. The leads are extremely likable and layered and I'm actually quite invested in their lives.

I also think its the evil uncle who poisoned Wang So's older brother. But Wang So thought the food was sent by his mother because thats what he told his brother and the palace servants before they ate the food. The Queen is shown as naive and somewhat less intelligent with the way she believes in everything evil uncle says. She even believed Wang So was the reason her oldest son died when it was very obviously poison.

The Queen is extremely unintelligent and unfit to be a mother. What kind of parent abandons her nine year old son, then meets him years later only to tell her husband she'd kill herself if he was let in the Palace again?

Wouldn't that be better? But that's his real mother alright. She's the curse in his life rather than his birth stars. She even told Wang So she regrets the day he was born. It must be heartbreaking for an abandoned child to hear that.

She's a horrible mother. Thankfully she isn't given enough screen space to aggravate me unlike in Moon Embraces Sun where the Dowager Queen was batshit insane. Unfortunately, Wang Wook makes up in the low on IQ department.

The title is indeed off-putting, but I read somewhere that the reign of this king was Shining in the beginning, w lots of good laws, and went down in shame at the end, as he went nuts. There seems to be a lot of Korean kings who went that way, judging from the way they are portrayed in many sageuks.
I'm loving the actress, Oh Yeon Seo. I like Jang Hyuk too, so I like the OTP. I rarely watch a drama for an actress, but this is one of those times.
Honey Lee was very likeable in Modern Farmers, but her char in this drama is so different, quite boring. Evil 2nd leads are rarely likeable. I FF thru all scenes w no OTP.

This is beautifully done--you captured the look on Wang So's face perfectly. Jang Hyuk can make me buy the most ridiculous narratives as long as he pines properly.
The title was weird to me too, until they finally explained in the most recent episode.

This drama actually has me on the edge of my seat. The acting is excellent. There is a great mix of romance, palace intrigue and fighting. I enjoy watching Jang Hyuk in fight scenes. His experience makes them more realistic.
I will say I wish they had given the Prince Wang Wook(?) character some flattering hair. It is homely to the point of distraction because it looks thin, unmanly and fake.

Me Too! I agree with you, AmerHousewife! I really like this show. And wait (im)patiently for each week's 2 episodes.
However, one reason I love K-Dramas so much is that I get lost in them. But every stinkin' time Wang Wook comes into shot I think, "what a crappy wig" and that thought yanks me back into the reality that I am watching a show--and not in it.
(Did I explain what I meant? I hope so.)

You explained it real well since I LOL. Im Joo-hwan really got the short end both with the character he's playing and his costume and styling. He looks like he's the one cross dressing and the little gold hairpin blings in the end of his curls just make it worse. Wang Wook looked decent in the Princes Competition. Not sure why his stylists insist on the ugly wig.

Jang Hyuk is doing an excellent job of jumping between So So and Wang So. He’s half intense, half hilarious and extremely engaging in both. I’d usually buy into anything he does no matter how horrifying the plot is (hello IRIS II anyone?) but SOGC is a winner. It feels rom-com like Moon Embraces Sun but with a lot more interesting plot and characters. The comedy feels natural and the chemistry between the OTP is a killer.

Based on a couple of comments I'd read, I wasn't expecting to like Shine or Go Crazy, but I needed something to at least partially fill the void left by Healer, so I decided to give it a go. I guess it worked, 'cause I ended up marathoning 8 episodes. I wouldn't say it's great, but I do find it to be a very enjoyable, easy watch.
Wang-so reminds me (to some extent) of FTLY's Gun-- a character I enjoyed a lot-- which I think helped to prime the pump for my liking SoGC.
I'm very partial to Im Joo Hwan, but I don't think his role in this is a great fit for him. (Nor is the hairstyle.) Honey Lee is freaking gorgeous in this.
Thanks, Fanderay!

me too, I watched SOGC because I need something refreshing after the third time rewatching Healer (still tempting for the fourth time *0*). SOGC is a fun and interesting drama to watch, I feel like the plot is thickening in the last 3 eps when all the misunderstandings are resolved and our characters start to know what they want to do next. I adore the main leads (not sure when is the last time I laughed this crazy). The role of Honey Lee is very intriguing, I would love to see how she manipulates people around her to achieve her goal (which becomes more ambiguous now).

One complain is Honey lee acting. She is a bit underwhelming with her constantly smirking everytime she speaks.
Im joohwan hair is such a mockery . He looks girlier than the two woman.

Love the picture! I agree it's one of the most romantic moment in Shine or Go Crazy. The title actually fits the drama perfectly as some of the characters have the potential to be crazy, e.g the paranoid king and prince wang wook who is so obsess with the female lead.
this is th first time i feel that the female lead is really smart, calm, and wise. It's such a breath of fresh air wathing her character. Not overly spunky or loud but just calm, beauitful, and warm.

Contrary to what others think, I appreciate Honey Lee's acting here. It's just my first time seeing a drama she's in, and I thought before she was just a pretty face. Her deep voice and simple (yet striking) facial expressions are top notch. I gotta say she's got some acting chops. So.... I never thought in a million years that I would like Shine or go crazy. The posters and description were just not my cup of tea. And then I clicked on your post a few hours ago, got curious enough about how everyone were talking about the chemistry of the two leads and started at ep 3 (or was it 4?) to check it out. I have to admit, I can't resist the lure of good chemistry, so I just wanted to be able to see it, just, you know, for a sample.
And I ended up MARATHONING THE WHOLE FREAKING THING UNTIL EP 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What the HECK. I'm so shocked at how much I actually like this drama, I'm still not recovered. The main couple is seriously making this drama. I'm not a huge fan of Jang Hyuk, but I actually love him in Shine. And I have a weakness for this whole disguisement trope where the male lead pretends to be useless but isn't, and the girl lead is also fooling the guy. I'm thinking that's why I kept watching regardless of life, and obligations, just to be able to watch all the misunderstandings, and their faces when they finally discover the truth. I think that might be the explanation of why I suddenly went crazy, and watched all of those episodes in one go. I don't know. I'm still incoherent and reeling from the shock.

I'm so glad more people are giving this show a chance. I've been keeping up with it even though it seemed like only two other people were watching it at the beginning.
I think the show is so hard to describe. It doesn't quite fall into most categories, and the plot isn't that original but somehow everything feels different. It's really it's own unique tone and flavor. I'm desperately hoping it doesn't have a tragic ending.

This is one of the best saeguk for me, the underdog drama with decent ratings. I'm in love with this drama and all the casts. The lead couple is amazing. I just hate the eveil siblings who will try to hurt the otp.
This drama has so much feeels!!!

What can i say.... This drama only gets better and better. I'm in love with the female lead character ShinYool/gaebong and her fated prince WangSo.
They are one of the best drama couple i've ever watched.
SOGC has all the elements of intensity , epic romance, royal disputes, comedy, bromance, fantasy which make it a really good drama.

As OYS fan, i'm glad that she took this drama. Saeguk really suits her. I'm loving every second of the otp moments. This is such a cute and beautiful drama

It's hilarious the difference of the Red Wedding in Shine or Go Crazy and Game of Thrones. Maybe it's just me lol.
Anyway, I am freakin' addicted to that drama. Of course, it has political conflicts, love triangle/square and blablabla but y'know, the romantic scenes with the OTP are just so damn cute, the side characters like her adoptive family are hilarious and there are a lot of hot princes/ninja assassins/guards so yeap', it's the perfect KDrama for Mon/Tues timeslot for me.

Contrary to all other commenters, I don't really like this drama; and I definitely like Lee Honey better here.
LOL~ Although I have to agree that Oh Yeon Seo looks gorgeous here.

Just to add, his official king's name is 광종 (Gwang Jong). The "Gwang" in Hanja can be written as 光(guang1 "light" also means "shine") or 狂 (kuang2 "mad"), hence the title.

My mon-tue is now complete with this drama and wed-thurs with KMHM.
Honey lee is stunning but she never shines in any drama for me. Im joo hwan role is too pathetic and his hair is too curly for me to take him seriously.
The otp romance is cute and adorable. Can't wait to see their story develops more.

I was really glad to see Shine or Go Crazy get some attention on Dramabeans, since there hasn't been much mention at all. I started watching for Jang Hyuk (whom I love) and have ended up being pleasantly surprised. The first 4 episodes were really slow...I kept wanting the plot to move along more quickly, but starting episode 5 and the last few weeks, it's been so much better and more addictive. I look forward to Monday/Tuesday every week now!
It seems like it took Jang Hyuk awhile to settle into the role of Wang So. In the beginning he felt a bit stilted to me, and his laugh kept reminding me of Lee Gun. But the past few weeks, with the sword fighting, horseback riding, stunts, etc, have been awesome. I've loved Oh Yeon So's character from the get go -- she's such an intelligent, cultured, and savvy lady. I love how she has the business smarts, knows all the languages, and is even knowledgeable about medicine too. She's one of the more appealing female leads in k-drama that I've come across in awhile.
The side characters are okay -- Im Ju Hwan needs a new hair stylist for sure, and Honey Lee is okay. She's gotten more interesting in the past few weeks as she's show jealousy and even possessiveness towards Wang So.
All in all, a great drama! It's only my second sageuk (my first was Chuno). :)

The two leads really shines in their roles. I always love fusion saeguk and this totally cured my heartbreak due to the cancellation of TTM.
I cas say that i love this drama so much! Even the OST is perfect. Just adore Oh Yeon Seo's character here, she is so witty, brave , beautiful, and calm but a total cuty when she is dressing up as GaeBong. Her scenes with Wang So always make me squeal.
I know i'm gonna go crazy when Honey lee and im joo hwan characters start doing petty things. They annoyed me so muuuuch

Marathon this drama for 2 days and i like it so far. The chemistry is amazing and the two leads are very likable. The prince competition was perfectly shot, i was in awe by JangHyuk actions on the horse. Of course Oh yeon seo is a very delightful actress to watch as well

It's shine or go crazy because it's related to the fate of the male lead. The word that describes his fate is 光 which can be read as fire over man, meaning he could shine- have a bright future, or go crazy (being unable to control the excessive fire)
