Dramabeans Podcast #27: The Healer edition

Hello everybody! It’s been a fun, exhilarating ride with this drama, and now that it’s over girlfriday and I felt it was appropriate to send off Healer with a toast and lots of (blubbering, incoherent) love.

We know we’ve all said tons about this show already and maybe non-Healer fans are tired of hearing about it (which is why we separated this podcast out into its own thing, so as to be easily skippable) — but when the heart speaks, we’ve learned it’s best to let it get it all out. One of the perks of evolving past dinosaur-brain-hood! So grab a glass and join us, why don’t you?

Really enjoyed listening to this podcast ladies - so much fun!! Thank you for making the Healer experience a pleasurable one with your witty and insightful commentary!

And you're right, it's the one drama which brought to my attention a lot of actors I'd never come across before, including Yoo Ji Tae, and Ji Chang Wook - must go back and re-watch some of Yoo Ji Tae's earlier stuff, as well as his renowned films!

GOOD NEWS BEANIES - Reaction to Healer fan project teaser is up:

Seems like you guys enjoyed the Teaser video we made. What if I told you we sent the Teaser Video to writer-nim Song Ji Na on the airing of the last episode. And that she along with Ajhumma and a few other actors and fans saw it in the theater together before watching the finale ? Would you like to see their reactions ? Here you go then :)

Thanks so much namedx!!! Great job getting your work to the Production Team.

Of course it would be nice to know if they received everything else we sent, like the emails that we sent directly to the moebius email. It would have been really lovely if we could watch them trying to figure out the emails, fan fic, watching the videos etc. :)

I FINALLY get to listen to this superb and fun podcast!

You're raging about two awesome dramas that totally blew me away. Love it. Healer and Misaeng are different but equally great. Okay, wait maybe Healer is a little bit better because just the thought of it makes my heart jump. :D

What a great drama! Not since City Hunter have I been so obsessed with the characters and the story. Dare I say it ... but JCW is a much better actor than LMH. THAT statement was BIG!

Thanks for the recaps and podcast. I, too, look forward to the day when another kdrama makes me feel this happy.

Until that day, cheers!

OMFG! These days when I visit Dramabeans, I see Healer and Ji Chang-wook related banners, that make me wanna cry all over again over how much Healer captured my heart. I've seen many dramas that I've loved but none captured my heart like Healer, and I don't even know why. I don't know what it is about it that made that happen! But it's so bittersweet to let Healer go...as much as I love it, I feel that marathoning more than once in the months that follow would kinda ruin it for me. Cheers to the whole Healer fandom!!

Am a bit incoherent now. I don't know what to get out or how to get it out.

I will try though.

I always never fit in with people around me in RL, in a sense where my love for stories and entertainment gives me happiness and not just be a past time is something people don't understand.

And finding people who like the same thing as you is bit easier online. And finding people to spazz about what you love is also easy online. But know what is hard ???

Finding people who take happiness from same thing as you do, so you all can be happy together. Shared happiness is double happiness as the proverb says.

And that's the reason why Healer fandom was so nice in a way, people who got here together , had only one reason. This show made them happy in a way and happiness is never really marred.

Most of all, for YOU BOTH to have given your time to spreading happiness.

Blogging for love of dramas is usual, but blogging to share the happiness and magic? Its real. I have never found such a blog for any fandom ever. That may not be a acute praise.
But you know what I love some much about how you love ??

You love for the right things. You find happiness in the bright things. You find satisfaction that leaves you with a warm glow.

Rather than just a mindless love or for needing to fit in.

So thank you GF and JB, for loving and being happy for what you like without apology and for sharing it with us !!!

I probably am gonna send you a separate mail, cuz I feel like I need to let it out so much more !!!!

I was waiting for the next podcast to skip all the dramas till healer section, A Whole podcast just for this awesome drama? Amazing!
You are so right!, after watching so many dramas, I noticed I dropped many of them, I take some time to decide which drama should watch next then I watching it while playing with my phone till something interesting happen.
Healer taught me there are still dramas with magic that let me swooning with this warm feeling in my heart. Love this sensation.
Thank you for increase all the feelings by reading you, the recaps and the comments.
I guess is time to say good bye, I'm not ready yet.

"Healer is like the kid brother who grew up so HOT. And you're like, when did THAT happen?" Hahaha! Agreed. As someone who has been part of the Healer fandom even before the show even started, it was just so nice and heartwarming to unexpectedly see it grow into the relatively international hit that it is now. Never would've thought this would happen!

The show is like Jung Hoo himself! There's heaviness in the aura and it's awkward at times which lightens to a comic relief. Then as soon as it opens itself, there is so much love and warmth there beyond the intrigue and it just captures you, not knowing when and how it even happened.

Yes.. healer was really special and I wish it was a hit like "you from another star".
I also get what you mean with Lee Minho and City Hunter and then Faith. I was thinking LMH was amazing then was really disappointed with Faith that I couldn't finish it.
After watching kdramas for 10 years I too wish there will be another drama that is as captivating as healer was.

Just finished listening to it. Made me burst out laughing loudly while on the train and drew stares.

thank you jb and gf for doing this podcast! It's helping me get some closure on what has been the wildest ride of drama land I've ever had. everything you talked about made me remember the feels this drama brought.

As for the actors..i didn't know yoo ji Tae was the 1st to be cast but I'm glad he played moon ho. It's such a nuanced character it had to bE played to perfection, which he did. I remembered him from Old Boy which is 1 of the first korean movies I ever watched and was impressed. I'm glad he came back to kdramaland for Healer.

Healer introduced me to Ji Chang Wook and boy am I grateful! I still have not seen his other dramas as their premise don't grab my attention but imma keep my eye out for all his future ones.

Love you gals. JB once again thanks for the recaps. Both of you are so right, the combination of cast, writing and execution made Healer abracadabra Magic!

I enjoyed the recaps as much as I enjoyed watching the series. Suddenly I find myself bereft because it is Monday and there's nothing to anticipate.

I tried to watch a few of the ongoing k-dramas in hopes of picking my next watch but none of them seem compelling (much like flat champagne!). I started watching Healer from Episode 4 because I read JB's recap then I watched Ep 5 and was completely sold!

I guess I have to wait............

First off, you guys told me to grab a drink, but then I was just sitting there drinking the whole time you guys were talking! So not fair, LOL!

For these reasons, I didn't have the ability to write a comment at the time, but I had so much fun listening to this last night! This podcast is so great! I always love all the tangents you guys go off on in the podcasts so I listen to all of them completely, even for shows I don't like, but it's so wonderful to have one all about one of my new all-time favorite shows.

And this is seriously uncanny. What you said about Story of a Man and Healer : "Healer is the kid brother who grew up really hot and you're like, woah when did that happen?!" - Like. This is exactly how I feel. Only I never knew it, until you said it, but this is so true! I loved Story of a Man, which is probably why I was always just as excited about the caper plots as I was about the squeeworthy moments in the later eps. I would have loved to see more of that.

I agree the directing certainly wasn't amazing, especially when it came to the action scenes, but I did appreciate it during certain moments and I think it definitely did justice to the writing, even if it didn't do much to enhance it. But mostly what I love is hearing the kind of energy that everyone, the writer, the director, the actors, had towards each other and the show. It feels like they all shared a common idea of what kind of drama they wanted to create.

PFFFFFT. Your conversation on drinking- so much win. I happen to find you both to be wonderful influences :D

"Harbor it close to your bosoms", "The things that I really like I don't like to talk about too much, I just want to think about it when I'm going to bed at night"

- I honestly think these statements say it all perfectly. It's like my personal favorite OTP moment, when Young-shin found Jung-hoo in his lair for the first time and, without saying a thing, just held him close in her embrace. That's how I feel about this show and this OTP.

P.S. I totally loved Jong-soo and his actor! All he had to do was look at Dae-yong as she passed him (like a badass) in ep 17 and I totally started imagining a rom-com all about them. This is another testament to how well this show has done creating it's world because, even without any real interaction between these side characters, I'm totally picturing a whole life between them, LOL. (he's younger than me?!...wow)

Oooo, also.

Over our time together watching Healer, there have been many noting similarities to City Hunter and also little allusions to other superhero/undercover stories, and really, rather than pitting them against each other, I've taken a sort of pleasure in appreciating them for their differences. That's why I loved the distinctions you described between them.

What you said about Healer not being a conventional hero is what made me love it so much from the very beginning! I think, for a section of time, I did actually think he might follow in the footsteps of his father (like many classic heroes) once he learned of the past and that maybe he would go up against the Elders of the world, but when the drama instead chose to make him and Young-shin take on this whole attitude of "Fiiiiine, let's just get this over with so we can be free from these dudes and get on to facing the real problems- The Dad", I actually realized that I wasn't surprised at all. There was always a narrative integrity that made me feel like that this was the kind of drama Healer was trying to be. I love it to pieces for that.

I agree. I believe the contributions of the directors in Healer are undervalued. They did justice to the well crafted scripts by great pacing, good cinematography, fine acting and super cool artistic directions. The ending is one of the best I've seen in Korean drama.

Thanks for this Healer Edition podcast, JB & GF! Thoroughly enjoyed it. And kudos to you and your bean-nions(?) also for the fantastically quick and well written drama recaps on DB- Those recaps are the fix I need to keep abreast of my favourite shows.
That said, Healer is the only kdrama I watched every episode of... And it's the only drama I am excited enough to write a comment for. Otherwise, I am just another invisible DB fan. There's something magical about Healer and I hope someone in kdramaland can distill its essence and come up with another equally special show, if not better, to keep us drama-fans interested. And soon!

When you said grab a drink, I realised I was starving and decided to eat my bodyweight in carbs while listening. One hour and 18 minutes of awesomeness. I don't normally advocate for drinking, but if you produce such a great podcast about my all time fav drama, then go ahead and rise your glasses!~
It sounds just like the rambling we had in the Healer threads...only those thousands of comments contain more specific raging about Ji Chang-wook's eyes, hands, and every visible part of his body...?

I am grateful for Healer coming to my life for many things, I didn't know I needed a drama like it until it came along. -Yoo ji tae's comeback to dramaland! How great is that. -And before, I had no idea JCW was such a multi talented precious human being.
-I actually watched every drama PMY has starred in since SKKS. Didn't really love every show, but she was always all right. But as Young-shin she was perfect, the character was meant for her and no one else.
-Healer also introduced to us such a great writer! Sing Ji-na is so special and precious, her interviews are a hoot to read. And I can't wait to watch all of her dramas. I hope she continues writing, whether for TV or novels, she just can't retire now.

Love the drama, love the actors, love Dramabeans, fellow Beanies, and read you almost everyday. I find myself haunted (besides by our favorite OTP SERIOUSLY) by the scene when Young Shin's mother who has been gazing out the huge window at the city says something like, "Where are you democracy?" Then she answers, "Here." She is so beautiful, and those words so poignant.

Ladies, listening to this was so much more delightful than I could have imagined. I could have easily listened to another 78 minutes of (increasingly drunken) rambling!

I watch dramas on and off, but Healer was the first one to send me searching for recaps and analysis after each episode - and it seems like I wasn't alone :)

Favorite moment: When Jung Hoo is beating up those guys in the coffee shop while simultaneously introducing himself to Young Shin's dad and telling her when to close her eyes. It had all the best parts of the show: action, intimacy, and awkwardness!

But why oh why did Moon Ho insist on wearing turtlenecks over collared shirts?

Great work, GF and JB!

Well, I finally got to know what everyone has been talking about! Managed to marathon the drama during the lunar new year. I enjoyed it but never reached the crazy fan levels that a lot did.

HOWEVER, I did reach crazy fan level for Yoo Ji Tae. What a great job he did. What an imposing presence. I was much more interested in the backstory of that generation than the OTP's. Once the backstory was completely revealed, it felt like the writing became not so coherent. The timelines were a little confusing and the bad guys became too incompetent and impotent.

Now, I must try to check out some of his other works. Love his speech patterns and his expressions.

Thanks for the podcast, JB and GF.

Have you ladies ever thought of adding your podcasts to itunes? I wish I had time to read your blog everyday but sadly I can only squeeze in the occasional audio while working. I mean I guess I could watch less dramas but that would defeat the purpose. The point being I would love to get a little pop up on my phone saying when I have a new podcast available.

With all the news of possible castings for Ji Chang Wook, even for his first lead role in a movie... I can't help but think of your podcast where you talk about knowing an actor must keep acting, but you kind of want to "keep" them in your favorite role and NOT let them do another drama/movie for a while, or ever! Haha... Oh, how I still feel that way for JCW! Here's hoping he chooses a good one!

Holy flipping A, that "MacBeth" scene would have been AMAZING if Moon-shik were speaking to his younger self! What a beautiful visualization of his guilt it would have been, an externalization (exorcism?) of his younger, more idealistic self. Can I just pretend that happened?
Thanks for wild ride, ladies! This podcast was the perfect toast to a great series. Cheers!

I should've watched Healer first then Empress Ki. I really regret it. Because I really love Healer but I have a little 'grudge' of Ji Chang-wook in Empress Ki. Ugh .. I really don't like his character in that drama and it makes me don't really love he is in Healer. The stutter really reminds me of Empress Ki.
