Dramabeans Podcast #27: The Healer edition

Hello everybody! It’s been a fun, exhilarating ride with this drama, and now that it’s over girlfriday and I felt it was appropriate to send off Healer with a toast and lots of (blubbering, incoherent) love.

We know we’ve all said tons about this show already and maybe non-Healer fans are tired of hearing about it (which is why we separated this podcast out into its own thing, so as to be easily skippable) — but when the heart speaks, we’ve learned it’s best to let it get it all out. One of the perks of evolving past dinosaur-brain-hood! So grab a glass and join us, why don’t you?

Podcast #27

*smile* look at the rooftop date photo...It's actually their first date right? Do you recall how he confessed to her? The way he tried up hide his "disappointment/excitement"...What do you think about it?

Required fields are marked *

Well, to be honest I can't say I was thinking very much of anything haha! I was too busy feeling. The Lion King popped into my head and I wanted to start singing 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight' for no apparent reason, except I could feel the loooooove.:)

0

actually that rooftop confession after the press conference, when JH said "i can live in the image you want, as long as possible, carefully, by your side.." is one of my favourite part in the drama... nothings beat the willingness of a man, to give up Himself to change and become someone that you pleases, as long as "that someone" he peaceable with. greatness in not just willing to die for loving u, but to live for you, live in life style you want, live in characters that you likes... for someone that never felt anything for a girl.. just like Teacher said,he was never interested in women, yet he is willing to give up a luminous grand persona , and become the not so outstanding Bongsookie, its a direct opposite. when he said, he need to find the "real Me"... actually Bongsookie is not completely the real me. what is real in Bongsookie, is mainly when he was Bongsookie,he can be naked with his emotion, and get into meaningful conversation with the woman he loved and have ability to comfort or advise her, or just be the listening ears... who exactly in his past history really bothered to listen to what he said or trust him enough to share deep secrets with him? with Bongsookie persona, he finally had a taste in knowing and be known, Bongsookie is only a part of the"real me" in Jung Hoo... the emotional part... and for Young Shin sake, he is willing to transform, or say stay within this "form", lesser glory form.
cannot image how can a woman not touched, when a guy said that to her, to be willing to live in the image she wanted.... what a sacrifice. ... its beyond my ability to fathom.
young shin, young shin, do you know, actually at that moment, to say that you have a crush on Healer, but unknowingly, you have fallen for Bongsookie already at that rooftop... else why were you so hurt when you found out Bongsookie is Healer. if Healer is greater than all, who he is doesn't hurt much.
to say that he is hurt or disappointed at her rejection, i guess it is more of touched by the depth of her persistent and unwavering devotion.... he should be thinking: "well, i will wait and enjoy one day that moment when you realize "he is me"...then i shall continue to watch over you at your side quietly, like your shadow....

YEEESSS! I was hoping Javabeans and Girlfriday would dedicate an entire podcast to Healer and my prayers were heard! And with a running time of (1:18:57), I think I'm in heaven! ^^

Required fields are marked *

I also stood up when our captains JB and GF practically ordered us to drink with then, and went to get a glass of wine for myself. And then I remembered I actually have a bottle of soju! (that I opened, took a few sips and re-capped. Yes, the taste takes getting used to.) how appropriate!

I am a few sips left to a dry bottle so I better type this now while my buzzing head is still (somewhat) functioning.

This is my first time to listen to a podcast from beginning to end. And I lloooovveee it!!! I never knew Javabeans and Girlfriday are so like us! LOL, I would have laughed just as hard every other word when speaking about Healer. It is such a blessing to see your friendship work so well together. You feed off each other and the result is this truly remarkable blog that binds people of kindred interest together.

And you called us Healer fans - "nice"... awww. Thank you.

@ wits and all

In one particular scene, Healer/SJH was queried by mom for ordering icebeans each time they meet when he doesn't even like beans. SJH replied that it's because mom liked it.

It's especially thoughtful of him that he orders two sets, one for himself so he can give all the beans to his mom. Seems like that's what love is all about. Giving the other person what they love. I dunno why that Healer scene appears to be made-for-Dramabeans. So let's dedicate Healer-beans to Dramabeans. More beans more love!
Cheers!

Re: Heirs killing our love for its actors -----> Totally true!!! I LOVED Lee Minho to an insanely and alarmingly high degree, but then in came Heirs and poof goes my affection just like that. It defied my usually sound logic (after all, he was just PLAYING a character), but awful writing does that to you.

Required fields are marked *

I still like Lee Min Ho and I fell in love with him in Faith and then followed with every other one of his dramas. Loved City Hunter. It wasn't really Heirs itself that dampened my enthusiasm, it was reading an interview with him after Heirs where he said he felt so wrong playing a teenager when he was 27 and he was sick of it. OK. I still liked him a lot - but then a few months ago I saw a video of several dozen photos strung together of Min Ho constantly checking himself out in the mirror, followed by an interview where he just seemed a bit ....smug and slick. So I still like him but not in love as I was in the beginning. BUT he will totally redeem himself if his acting is amazing in Gangnam Blues. I'm hoping it's so. But here's the deal for me: Ji Chang Wook is so humble and adorable and shy and goofy and multi-talented and open with his fans and thinks himself ordinary that I think he's way ahead of Lee Min Ho now as an actor AND a basically good guy. It's just a feeling...just an instinct - and I would LOVE to be wrong. Prove it to me, LMH. Please!

I love everything you said about JCW! He is the *one* to cheer for. Though I don't have much of an opinion about LMH, to me he is just another actor. JCW is the only one I follow crazily. <3

oh my God!You took the words out of my mouth, @lunatic4KD!i was a LMH fan, but then come the heir, and then also a series photo of him checkin out his face on that tiny-pinky-victorian mirror, and i just couldn't.erm..

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

@Lunatic4KD in my case i always have a crush on LMH everytime i watch any of his dramas, but couldn't care less about him outside of them lol. strangely i have no desire to follow him outside his works. i guess that goes to show how well he played his characters? he certainly is a camera magnet

he's still one of my fave kdrama actors and i do wish he'd act in a quality drama this year

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Me too, I use to like LMH but it kinda turned me off when i found he was so vain.. When it comes to acting I've never seen him so immersed with his character like JCW.. I was so impressed watching his controlled emotions in this drama.. And yes, his humble and simple personality adds to his appeal.. Very talented guy.. Looking forward to more of his projects.. ?

Yes. There was a huge disconnect for me with Heirs too. I really tried to relate to it because I love LMH. It was just sad watching him in Heirs.

Required fields are marked *

I like LMH. yeah,I used d word "like" cuz I loved him but after his role in heirs.. I just went from love to bleh.
LMH can act BUT JCW acts better, wayyyyyyy better.
I practically drool, stalk,ff every news or article bout him.
LMH has to get my first love for him back in a good show.

0

Required fields are marked *

Granted Heirs is not everyone's cup of tea. Yet nevertheless, I liked the fact that I didn't have to like nor was I required to automatically swoon for Lee Min-Ho's & Kim Woo-Bin's characters. Instead, I could just focus on appreciating their performances and the character journeys/arcs for Kim Tan & Choi Young-Do. It's good to see actors challenge themselves by stepping outside of their comfort zones and try their hand at tackling something different. In this case unlikable characters you love to hate. Both leads were utterly compelling and possessed an intangible charisma.

The writer and cast were amazing and I think all the actors were perfect for their role. I dont think the drama would have been the same without JCW and PMY, they had a good connection and were able to project their characters well.

Such an awesome gift, thank you. Can I just say, SQuuueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! As much as I love this show, can I point something out without offending anyone. I found the finale underwhelming and rushed. As awesome as the entire show was, the rushed mother daughter reunion was the biggest let down for me. I also feel Yoo Ji-Tae had a great track going that got sidelined down the line and he wasn't utilized properly. Also as much as I love the fact that this show avoided all the cliches really well, the story and writing became a bit too predictable by the end, I can now see that after the show has ended. Nevertheless, I love Ji Chang Wook and am extremely happy he did healer before leaving for Military(I really couldn't stand his character in Empress Ki). Also, loved Park Min-Young as Young-Shin, she is now at the top of my favorite Korean drama heroines now. And I am definitely gonna miss the fan frenzy here in dramabeans comment section, that was just so much fun.

Info on Yoo Ji tae is highly appreciated, didn't know him before Healer and after this podcast, I like him more. This was a funny podcast with the giggles and forgetting your train of thought. Lol.
This is the only podcast that will never get deleted after listening. Hope I get over healer because I'm kind of exhausted with myself checking out all and everything about Ji Chang wook, it doesn't help that he has the most beautiful smile I've seen or noticed on anyone ever, amazing laugh and too cute for words.damn him.I'm getting incoherent, it's 9am and I haven't been to bed yet. 8hours after declaring this i hilariously failed.I don't know why, but the moment I declare I won't do something, the more I do it. I found myself making a Ji Chang wook meme, tweeting, instagraming all things wookie as I like to call him, playing healer on my Dvd.but atleast I did 8 hours and I feel I'm not as hyper for him as I was before. Right now I'm re-watching (Empress ki for the millionth time) but not for Ji Chang wook specifically , I just like the show.
I have not played Ji Chang wook 's latest instagram video,I just scrolled past it,and that my friends is progress in my book.
Though I failed, I will find that something "heirish " to get me off you.if it worked for Lee min ho addiction, it will work for you.

Just finished listening to the broadcast and let me say, thank you for sharing the Healer feels with the whole Healer fandom.

In many recap threads, several of us would say "What is it about Healer that makes us this giddy and passionate?" We attempted to dissect, to de-construct, to examine every aspect and little detail of the drama, but were not entirely satisfied we found the answer.

But here, yes, JB and GF have hit the nail on the head. Every reason we gave can be summed up in that one word: MAGIC.
Healer gave us the magic.

I am one of those who have not heard of Yoo Ji Tae before Healer. I really really am glad that I got introduced to this awesome actor.

In another site, someone implied that Healer (though it was just starting then, that YJT might be wasted in the show. On the contrary, as you've pointed out, Moon-ho is a central character, the one standing smack in the middle, and he was played excellently by YJT. Indeed, the actor's gravitas made the character very credible.

It may be true that Moon-ho was a gray and mysterious character at the start and some actually disliked him in the early episodes recap discussions. But somehow, from the moment he showed up (in that scene where there was a protest rally), he had me. Though I didn't know YJT from Adam at that time, I intuitively felt that he was a character I would be rooting for all the way. Now, since there was very little in the plot to point which way that character was going, my reaction might actually have been influenced by the actor's presence and demeanour.

The Healer recap comment threads were so much fun. And like jb and gf said, extremely pleasant. Enough to ignore the occasional angry drunk guy Haha
I have seen so many blogs and other places where people left comments like: We met on the dramabeans Kim Sam soon thread. Or another show's comment thread and have been friends ever since.
I've made such friends because of the Healer recaps. I met them each week and I've grown attached to them. We have talked and discussed everything we could talk about. ( the important stuff and the not so important Haha. The armpit conversation - I sent it to all my friends) There's Growingbeautifully , Turkish rose Teru, omomo, Sumee and many others. Thankyou for the amazing experience, girls. It was so much fun. :D
Thank you dramabeans, for creating a place for us to meet and jb, for your recaps. Your recaps introduced me to one of the best shows of all time.

We feel your love and you certainly felt ours. I could kick back with you two - without a doubt. ...and you said "bosoms"...... Heee heeee! So funny! What a ride it's been. Healer and DramaBeans have brightened up my already over-the-top bright life and I thank you, thank you, thank you. ETA: Here I am back again, and although this is off topic since this is about healer and I'm not part of the healer craze but I've listened to 6 minutes of the podcast where you were deeming Heirs as that terrible drama and continue to praise that inflated to high heaven POS MLFTS deeming it oh the novel concept of the century!

Well I may have not watched 800 dramas but a novel concept that has the most wooden male lead, the most irritating female lead, useless second leads, a brother that did nothing, a jealous friend that was as interesting as uncooked white rice, two bookstore morons, a mother who did a repeat of her role in "the queen of the game" and a pathetic villain does NOT win at life, not by a fat chance...In fact the only interesting character in that whole mess of a show was the adorable attorney/father figure...But then again he's always that adorable in all his roles. So that drama had Absolutely NO draw for me.

While you go on to crap on the Heirs as being the drama that turned you off of everyone in it, and I don't even want to ask why, or go searching in old recap threads and comments. All I know is that, even if the concept was done a million times, the execution and the performances were the heart of this little show...It had everything going for it, a gold hearted hero with so much crap going on in his psyche that almost broke him towards the end (something anyone can relate to without ever thinking of tagging him as a coward or a wuss, he can only handle so much shit and that's quite alright that he almost gave up ...Many of us can only think of giving up when the pressure is that strong!) a heroine that is tough as nails even with her intolerable reality, she was charming, kind, never switched to the evil camp when the tough got going when in reality many ppl just say fuck it I'm going to bail out on all my values and become the most evil bitch ever. She stayed her ground and won back the love of everyone, rightfully! Amazing support cast, and I can honestly say that EVERY SINGLE ONE of them had a fantastic role and went on to portray it superbly except for that dead fish of a father he was just plain UGH! I cared about everyone in the show, their problems and conflicts were real (though fictional yet they made them very real) they played fantastically off of each other and they meshed beautifully. I enjoyed their friendship and their enmity and was rooting for them to sort all this crap out...I seriously only wanted the dad to go away...Everyone else was a riot and a joy to watch!

I don't know about the "typical" rating methods on DB, nor am i aware of all the parallels and similarities in drama stories...The candy characters, the cinderella stories or whatnot...All I know and go by when I see something that I like and enjoy is the performances and chemistry between the cast...That's what draws me in, if an amazing performance (that pulls at my heartstrings) was given in a drama that was absolutely...

Continue...

That’s what draws me in, if an amazing performance (that pulls at my heartstrings) was given in a drama that was absolutely absurd I'd still love and adore that performance and go back to watch it time and time again, because that's why we watch shows...Not because the lighting was perfect, or the lines were amazing (Although the heirs had some amazing lines that lingered on and a good hearted message that is valuable) or the scenes were flawless, or that there is nothing to critique...But because characters draw us to them and their issues, they hypnotize us and pull us into their world, performances that touch us and stay with us, longing looks and lingering moments ...I thoroughly enjoyed the heirs I don't care who deems it a flop, terrible or a flue...While I cringed throughout that overhyped OTHER drama ...No thank you, again I'll make my own call when it comes to which dramas are worth my time and those that don't deserve a single minute of it!

Looks like we've similar taste in men, at least in the form of K actors. I loved Hyun Bin for 4 years, and am very fond of LMH too, up to and including Heirs. But come Healer, JCW tops my list now.

OMG, me too.it's these three for me,Jcw is fighting for top spot but Hyun bin's dimples darn confused. But it's pretty much smile vs dimples.

Required fields are marked *

I adore JCW too he's super amazing, I just didn't love healer...I am not sure if it was the unbelievable "hacking aka ajuma typing gibberish on a keyboard thing" or the fact that it reminded me much of the many American crime solving tv shows, you know CSI/NCIS/etc, or my dislike of the female lead...I really wanted to watch this for JCW but I just couldn't go past those elements. As for LMH, man I wrote a whole thing regarding him, and his performance in Heirs but DB insists on not posting my comment so I desisted..

To me these men are not just their looks, though they are all beautiful, it's their soul and their heart that they put in each scene and how they capture my attention and hold it till the last second, they are simply fantastic actors ...Any actor that has the ability to fall in love with him and his character gets my vote...I won't hold anything against them even if they star in lousy dramas, as long as they remain solid, then they have my loyalty for life!

It's all right luv, as the saying goes, to each their own...What bothers me more than the wishy washy preferences is the overhyping of certain other actors or dramas when they are much more inferior to those being put down and ridiculed...Then again all that is according to my personal taste so I won't fault ppl for loving what they love...I'll simply love what "I" love :)

Required fields are marked *

I like Lee Min-ho too, a lot. And I believe my love grew exponentially while watching Heirs, the drama that tested my affection was Personal Taste. Heirs was my favourite one of his performances even though I didn't like his character all the time.
But I saw Ji Chang-wook in Empress Ki, and I immediately knocked Kim Soo-hyun off my forever bias pedestal and installed Ji Chang-wook on it. Ta-hwan isn't the greatest character, he was see a wimp who was driven insane by his obsessive Love for a woman, but Ji Chang-wook's performance made me cry, in fact I cried so much I had to stop watching the show at episode 46, I couldn't keep on dealing with the heartache. So now on my list of actors I would watch anything for is Ji Chang-wook, Kim Soo-hyun and Lee Min-ho, in that order.

Lee Min Ho's performance in the Heirs was heart-wrenching..He gave it every cell of his being, he portrayed a flawed character with flawed circumstance with so much heart and honesty all I wanted to do was hug him all the time...In the end I totally got his frustration, his despair and his lack of will to go on..Anyone subjected to those circumstance whether they are anywhere near real or totally fictional can simply break never to get up again...He kept fighting till the very end and even if there was no particular closure the ride itself was completely satisfying IMO...As for JCW and Empress KI, the boy was just beyond adorable, yes he was a jerk at times and a wuss, and a whiner but hey this all proves how wonderful of an actor he truly is, he was able to make us love him, detest him, vouch for him and against him and feel heartbroken for him all at the same time...I knew I was watching a winner when I saw him (it was my first JCW drama) in Empress Ki! :D

I agree Kim Tan's helplessness was so palpable, in fact I remember while watching the scene where he breaks down and asks Won to send him back to America because he couldn't keep living like this since Eun-sang was gone, I kept thinking, "wow, I've never seen Lee Min-ho portray a character's pain like this, I've never seen him cry like this". I usually feel like he isn't fully invested in the character, like there was a little bit of him he was holding back while acting, but in Heirs it was different, so different. I wanted to reach into my computer screen and hug him and remove him from all the toxic situations in his life. I usually end up hating a lot of the dramas recommended by people on this site(no offense), they always seem to be missing something for me. I'm an emotional drama-watcher, if a drama doesn't make me want to cry or scream or make me connect with the character's pain, I can't enjoy it even if it is the best drama of the year.

Hi5! I'm with you all the way, I hate hype...I'm all about heart, if ANYTHING I'm watching is without heart then I ditch it. I don't care who thinks it's the best thing ever...I need to feel to be able to enjoy what I'm watching, if it doesn't transcend me then it's pointless to even bother wasting my time...No matter how sharp, well done, or "perfect" it may be. I guess I've always been an underdog supporter, If things are not flawed they don't attract me :D

Actually in terms of OTP chemistry and the overall storyline & plot, I liked Faith (aka The Great Doctor) and My Love From the Stars (aka You Who Came From the Stars) way more than Healer. Beyond just watching the shows live and commenting in the recaps/threads, I found both Faith & MLFTS to be just a way better experience in general.

The villians in Healer (Elder, Kim Moon-Sik, & Chul-Min) lacked the gravitas of Kim Sang-Joong’s Lee Jin-Pyo in City Hunter. They never really could match the emotional connection of his character nor measure up & surpass his aura within the context of the storyline.

Heirs — granted it's not everyone's cup of tea. Yet nevertheless what I liked about it was the fact that I didn't have to like nor was I required to automatically swoon for Lee Min-Ho's & Kim Woo-Bin's characters.

Dearest Javabeans and Girlfriday,

Thank you, a thousand time for dedicating a whole podcast (and getting drunk, LOL you crazy girls!) just for Healer! I've just finished listening and reading all comments and I've not stopped smiling throughout.

Thank you too for mentioning us, the crazy fandom! (21:11 minutes and following) LOL! For saying that you're "amazed and impressed" that this fandom has been "so respectful". For accepting the scary state of your mail box, Heheheh!. For seeing how we've grown as a "family" and accepting us. For laughing at how we received trolls with aplomb and incredulity but without anger ... "Huh! What are you doing here?" :) For all this, thank you and we really appreciate you too!

I've actually never really been swept away in so many feels, joys and love in any fandom before. This has been one of the happiest and most memorable experiences of my life. Something I feel so privileged to have experienced and that I would never want to give up or forget, for all the world! It is with a little lump in the throat and a small tear in the eye, that I slowly let go. This podcast helps a great deal in giving us this closure and helps me (us?) move on.

I'm so glad that you, JB and GF, and all of us at DB who love Healer, had a fun ride together and that our joy in sharing this enjoyment with each other knew no boundaries. We are all the happier because you have been with us and because all of us have been together in this, in a special way. Lots of love and blessings to all! :)

If you'd like to have a clue about where to meet up so to speak, why not we hang out at Episode 20 around Comment 451 onwards? (It's at Comment 435 now.) So that will be from Page 10 onwards, I believe? Let's see how it goes, this is just experimental we me coming up with all kinds of suggestions, not all of which may be feasible.

Like I said, as long as I did not put in spoilers, I commented on the Ep 1-3 threads but when I wanted to do a comparison with future episodes, I wrote in Ep 20. I hope to see you before too long. It's Sunday night for me now, which might make it Sunday morning for you. See you! :)

Woah! Hold on! It's my first time to download your podcast because most of the time I just listen to it to waste time.

Personally, I wouldn't want to compare this to City Hunter because yeah~ it was totally different! I won't even mind wasting my time arguing with CH fans *runs away*

JB and GF as drunkards are really funny hahahaha! I don't drink alcoholic beverages and I'm totally blown away at their comments HAHAHAHAHA ~OUCH! I'm 22 though xD
I can't believe how I'm listening to drunkards while typing some serious workpapers lmao xD You are both correct, I really feel like if you've been so fond to watching dramas then you'll probably think that some fresh concepts are indeed needed. I actually thought that Healer may not caught my attention at first, but once I devoted myself into watching it, it kind of took me out of my world and sucked me into HEALER and CYS' world. I'm totally hooked that I even downloaded their OST song which I'm not usually doing (last time I did this was during Secret Garden)

If you have actually watched Empress Ki, you'll already expect how good JCW is at doing two personalities at the same time. But with this role, he basically surprises me every time that I don't know when will I be prepared for him!

This podcast gave me a partial closure for my withdrawal symptoms, PARTIAL because I will never close my heart for this drama. I'm still waiting for this drama to be broadcasted in our country so that I can once again scream and giggle while my whole family is watching with me too.

"THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER ONE, CAUSE I'M ETERNALLY YOURS"~ BYE HEALER! SEE YOU AGAIN NEXT TIME JI CHANG WOOK!

Thanks Javabeans and Girlfriday! Been a fan of DB since You're Beautiful!
