Is anyone here a fan of Rurouni Kenshin? I saw the last part of the live-action trilogy. Covers the 2nd half of Shishio arc. Sad to say it did not move me at all. Its as if they were simply covering checkpoints in the story.

I know it is difficult to condense a material as vast as the Kenshin-verse into 3 movies, but the film failed miserably at showing Kenshin's inner struggle and his true conflict with Shishio. His meeting Hiko was turned into a Kdrama coincidence. Hiko's motivation to teach him the final technique was not addressed at all. Sano had precious little to do than to run around uselessly. The sword fights were beautifully choreographed, but after a while it became repetitive. There can be such a thing as too many sword fights.

The final fight was 4 vs 1 fight and Shishio came off looking as the cool one. Sano was unintentionally hilarious there. They did give us a final showdown between Shishio and Kenshin, but to those not familiar with the original story, it might appear as a confusing fight. For example, why did Shishio spontaneously combust? What was the significance of that extra step taken. At the end of it all Sano was looking the worst of them all.. coughing blood and what not while Kenshin stood strong. Yet while escaping from that place, Kenshin was the one being supported by Sano. In the grand scheme of things its a minor thing, but its indicative of the problems in the movie. Where to jump back to the original story if you have diverged from it before.

Saitoh was the only "cool-dude". Wish he had more screen time. But on the whole I am glad these films were made.

ah I forgot one thing. I usually never eat pasta or macaroni or ramyun but lately there has been so much work, no time to shop and I have no appetite too....so I thought well what the heck I will buy instant ramyun and eat that but they all have dried peices of some sort of meat in them, I saw stuff I have seen colleagues eating andthey have it inside the ramuyn, the ones in our shops. no vegetarian version. not even simply with cheese. that made me angry. I mean I understand if it is the little package of flavour but why do you put it inbetween the ramyun why? do I just have to pick out the pieces of dried meat or what, with my fingers? not even seafood ramuyn.

ah I dont care really. it was just one of those evenings and it could have come handy.

I'm a vegetarian and I agree -- it is impossible to find vegetarian ramen. Even if you think it is, check the flavor packets. Not! Maybe if I lived where there's a health food store or a Whole Foods? But I live in the boonies with one grocery store, so nothing like it.

However since falling into Kdrama-Land, I am eating more rice than I ever had! Always keep some made. :-D

thats just it, I looked at all the grains and also rice in my pantry, and just didnt lust after any of them. I probably would have just gone without eating, but I finally found some rye crackers. just no appetite at all and ramen seemed like something agreeable

why cant they make it, with, say, dried parsnip or celery or something. or what would be a good vegetarian / vegan option?

And ramen would be a convenient, quick meal. (How many times do we see that in Kdramas?)

Sorry to hear about your appetite. Not sure if I missed some other comment of yours, but if you are dealing with nausea as well, anything with ginger helps. Ginger ale, ginger snaps, ginger tea... anything. (I knew this already, when I later accompanied a friend undergoing cancer treatment at world re-known center. They taught this in their nutrition classes for patients dealing with nausea.)

Hope you can find something more to eat than rye crackers!

Can I just say how much I am enjoying Valid Love?!!!!!

I have become a fan of Lee Si Young. That lady has won me over as Kim Il Ri. Her emotional, funny, romantic and high school scenes are simply awesome.

Uhm Tae Woong is my first love of Korean dramas. As Jang Hee Tae my heart is with him. I do wish he and Il Ri gets back together.

Lee Soo Hyuk has improved a lot and it is marvelous to see his simple devotion and love to carpentry and Il Ri. Well he is an eye candy but I hope to see some more acting projects of him soon.

And the lighting, music, scenes of nature are an eye porn. Loving this series with its simple and yet so profound heart endearing dialogues. Even the actress as Hee Soo is moving. We shouldn't take people and their inhibitions at face value.

More love for Valid Love!

I want Lee Soo Hyuk to TALK a little more cause my favorite part is his voice. kinda another reason why this drama reminds me of Shut Up Fbb - LSH´s voice is similarly deep as Sung Joons´.

it is the whole vibe and atmosphere in this drama that I like. pretty cinematogrpahy, eye for detail, all these 4 dimensional characters with their torn up souls.
I just want more Unni daydream scenes where she gets up and flounces around like an invisible fairy among everyone. and her mind talk at Carpenter Kim is so funny

Anyone watching Heart to Heart? I went in expecting to hate it and am loving it more and more with each episode. I love it when a show makes you laugh unexpectedly, I spent the last two episodes giggling like an idiot. Awesome.

I guess expectations are everything, since I was totally prepared to love Spy, as it's a genre I generally adore... But something is missing with that show. The acting is spot on, so I think the PD is to blame. I had to force myself to get through episode 3 and when I realized I wasn't even looking forward to the 4th one, I quit ten minutes in. Why is that?? Anyone else having the same issue?

Also watching Healer, which I don't need to talk about since everyone else has that covered. Yes, I love it too :-)

Kill me Heal me started off REALLY iffy for me, but now that they've settled into a campy action/comedy/romance, I am totally in. There have been a ton of hilarious moments and I am enjoying the ride.

Hi Aqf,

I'm watching Heart to Heart and so far loving it.

Spy is picking up for me.

Kill Me Heal Me started off iffy for me as well. Still not sure. I like it, but it's also kind of a Frankestein patchwork of other shows.

Call me a heretic. Healer just doesn't grab me. I'm watching it, but find myself watching the clock as well waiting for it to end.

:-) I always respect heresy!
Tbh I'm not sure I get the whole Ji Chang Wook obsession, I'm watching Healer more for Yoo Ji Tae, who's just such a great actor. But I get how the show might not appeal to some.

I felt the same way with Gaksital (yeah, I was too afraid to voice it while it aired lol) . I never finished that show, actually

LOL! Thanks Aqf.

When I first started watching Healer I thought "I know this guy. Who is he?" Looked up Yoo Ji Tae. Oh my god... Oldboy. :: shudder :: Was he ever good in that. Still get a visceral reaction to his bad guy. Which reminds me I haven't seen Sympathy for Lady Vengeance yet, which he is in. (I have seen the other in the revenge trilogy Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, which he isn't in.) A heads up to the faint of heart: you may want to pass on these, especially Oldboy.

I'd also seen him in Hwang Jin-Yi. That's all up until Healer, but he did make a big impression on me.

I didn't see Gaksital.

Ooh I looooved that trilogy. They showed all three last year at the art house cinema in Miami and I dragged a friend along for the first...she was so mad at me she didn't talk to me for the rest if the evening lol

LOL!!! I can see that. :-)

Reminds me of Night of the Living Dead. I was a teenager when the very first one, in black and white, came out. I saw it with my older sister and her boyfriend in a drive-in theater, which kind of added to the creepiness. Later I accompanied her boyfriend when he dragged a bunch of his friends to a movie theater to see it. I remember several of them punching, hitting and slapping him -- with fists, hands and/or purses -- yelling at him "Why in the world did you bring me to this??!! What were you thinking?".... all while the movie was going on! They were genuinely angry. I think a few of them didn't speak to him for some time after that.

I've warned people off Oldboy. Even people who like dark movies, but I know won't be able to handle it. There is dark, and then there's daaaarrk. It's one of those movies I'm glad I saw, is important and well done. A classic. But I can't imagine seeing it again.

Me, either. I watched the first episode & really didn't like it. In fact, nothing airing right now appeals to me. Oh, well. It'll be February soon enough.

I don't know why either. For me, maybe from the fact that not too much has happened?

Like for a 'spy thriller', so far they've had an interrogation, a car crash, a mini fight scene, and a bunch of talking. Mostly all the action has been centered around the mom.

Maybe they should've shown some full-scale spy missions first? Right now, i dont get any sense that Jaejoong is any sort of a special spy. I usually hate it when dramas make their MCs look like special snowflakes, but I think they needed to do it here just to establish why he's so valuable as a 'top agent'

Yeah, you're right, it seems oddly slow for a thriller. And I totally agree about needing to see why exactly JJ is special. I mean, he's hot and all, but he isn't particularly interesting as a character.

I found a new Korean cop show today - it's called "H.I.T." (me: What? Why is that an acronym? What? Turns out there's English on their team sign: Homicide Investigation Unit.)

I guess it's from a few years ago, based on the phones - features a woman Detective Inspector running a serial killer investigation team & bumping heads with a jerkface (of course) rookie Prosecutor. Really enjoying it, so far. :)
