News bites: January 24, 2015

- Jo Yoon-hee (King’s Face) will join Yoo Seung-ho (I Miss You) in his army comeback project Joseon Magician. Yoo stars as a young and gifted magician who falls in love with a Joseon princess (Go Ara) and becomes mired in a conspiracy, while Jo will play his blind sister, a beautiful and talented gisaeng. [Xports News]
- Jung Woo-sung will play a hero in the action sageuk Jakseoeui Byeon–Attack of the Spirit. Jakseoeui Byeon is difficult to translate, but loosely means “change effected by a burning mouse,” and refers to a historical event that occurred in the era the movie is set in. The plot is based on the bizarre true story of Jungjong, the eleventh king of Joseon, who was plagued by a spirit (there isn’t an exact translation for the word in English; a more descriptive term would be “mononoke” or “strange being”) in the palace in the 22nd year of his reign, and who actually moved palaces to escape the supernatural presence. As if that weren’t enough, Jungjong was also plagued by political forces who coveted his position. Jung Woo-sung will play Jungjong’s faithful subject, a man who tries to get to the bottom of the strange happenings in the palace, and who punishes those attempting to revolt against the king. The role is being likened to that of Maximus in Gladiator, and Jung is said to be training in martial arts in preparation for the film. Jakseoeui Byeon begins filming at the end of February. [TV Report]
- Kim Young-kwang (Pinocchio) will collaborate with Sandara Park (of 2NE1) in the joint Chinese-Korean web drama Doctor Mo’s Clinic. Kim has been cast as Dr. Mo, a psychiatrist who specializes in hypnosis therapy. Once a firm believer in love, the doc was burned badly in a previous relationship; all he’s left with are painful memories, which he suppresses as he treats his patients. Park (in her first real acting gig) plays a quirky, 4-D office girl, who typically hides her face when caught in sticky situations. She becomes Dr. Mo’s patient, and as he counsels her, he slowly begins to heal his own hurts. The web drama comes will be helmed by director Kwon Hyuk-chan (A Gentleman’s Dignity, Secret Garden) and launches in mid-March on Naver TVCast and Youku. [TV Report, E News]
- It sure feels like Sung Dong-il (It’s Okay It’s Love, Gap-dong) has been playing detective a lot lately. The upcoming movie Joy takes place ten years after a murder, and will focus on the lead detective on the case (Sung) and his daughter, who will be played by Kim Yoo-jung (Secret Door). Sung’s investigator is a sage man who loves his daughter, and Sohn Ho-joon (Trot Lovers) has been cast as the suspect who reappears in front of the daddy-daughter duo and exposes a decade-old secret. (Another Answer Me 1994 reunion! But terrorizing your old father figure? That’s just wrong!) Joy begins filming at the end of this month. [Osen]
- Lee Sang-yub has just wrapped filming Transformation of a Flower Boy in China and will return to dramaland with the upcoming weekend show Bluebird’s House. We mentioned his casting before, but now we’ve learned that he’ll play the lead bad boy; a guy who looks like a gentleman, but is full of mischief. Bluebird’s House premieres February 21 on KBS. [Joy News]
- Joo-won (Cantabile Tomorrow) and veteran film actor Yoo Hae-jin are positively considering the thriller movie That’s Him, which will be about a man pursuing the killer of his younger sibling. Once casting is complete, which should be soon, cameras will begin rolling.[Osen]
- Oh Yoon-ah (You’re All Surrounded) is close to accepting an offer to appear as the friend and former high school classmate of Kim Hee-sun (Wonderful Season) in MBC’s upcoming Wednesday–Thursday drama Angry Mom. She’ll serve as the personal assistant to Chairman Hong and his secret mistress. A chameleon who changes personalities depending on whom she speaks with, Oh’s character will face an internal struggle as she wavers between friendship and honor. Angry Mom follows Kill Me, Heal Me in March. [Osen]

It's funny, in motion they don't look alike at all but I'm always mistaking Lee Sang-yub for Lee Je-hoon in pictures!
Joy sounds interesting (and Answer Me reunion! I loved it when Trot Lovers had the 1997/1994 mini-crossover with the casting of Jung Eun-ji and Son Ho-joon, haha)`

Lee Sang-yub looks like across b/t Lee Je-hoon and Lee Soo-hyuk. I had to pause for a second too.

For some reason I really wanted Lee Sang-yub to play the lead in the Korean version of In Time With You. But this role sounds fun and I'll be happy to see him in it.

I dunno if this counts, but Sandara Park played the lead in some movies and dramas after winning a star search show in the Philippines. Dr Mo's clinic isn't exactly her first "real acting gig". (This was years before she moved back to SK and debuted as a member of 2NE1) :D
PS Why can't Dr Mo's clinic be about a martial arts master who treats people by hitting certain pressure points??? Whyyyyyy???

Her first Korean acting gig was in The Return of Iljimae, minor role I think.
And she did have a kiss scene with Jung Il Woo... Lucky Dara ^^

she had leading roles in several movies in the philippines, so i don't think this can be considered her first role of any real significance. unless you mean in korea.

Attack of the Spirit reminds me of hearing of people who abandon a house because of poltergeist. Cannot imagine what a combo Gladiator/Poltergeist story will be like.

I developed a crush on Jo Yoonhee after The King's Face. I also really like Yoo Seungho after watching I Miss You (Team Harry--sorry wrong site) and even though I Miss You was a fairly weak drama he did very well portraying the tortured villain ;w; I really can't wait to see their chemistry!!

I'm most intrigued by Jung Woo Sung's upcoming movie.. Wonder what exactly the spirit and how the story would (re)interpret the history records? I'm also curious who will be Jungjong :D

Those first two movies sound interesting, although Korean movies tend to be underwhelming for me. But what does a burning mouse have to do with anything?

I'm guessing it's an idiomatic expression, not to be taken literally-- like "it's raining cats and dogs". It does sound funny, though.

I'm also quite excited that Dara gets to act again after so many years. Her acting in the 2NE1 videos was always so perfect. It's interesting though that she gets to act with KYK^^ who starred in the Park Bom MV. To be honest, I would've wanted to see her again with Jung Ilwoo, Lee Minho, or Lee Soo Hyuk--all of whom she had fantastic chemistry with. But I'm sure she'll have loads of chemistry with Kim Young Kwang too. Super excited about this, and I hope this is the start of more acting jobs for her! I always thought it was such a loss to the K-drama world that she wasn't able to express her acting talent.

Too bad Jo Yoon-Hee joined The Joseon Magician. She is a mediocre actress. Never felt she brought anything to the plate in any production she was in.

Ok... I haven't been paying any attention. But she's sort of the kind of face that looks different to me depending on her makeup and outfit. Like, I just googled her, and in some pics I couldn't recognize her. A'way... I really miss her from Hotelier. Thought her chemistry with BYJ was pretty heated.
