Kolorful Palette: Open and shut [Healer]

Well who knew that a drama about a night courier getting caught up in a world of news and political intrigue would be so squee-worthy? I’m not sure I would quite label Healer as a romantic comedy, and yet it has me swooning and giggling more than I have in months. It just goes to show that we don’t have be beaten over the head with fan service to experience a great romance.

It’s probably no mystery why I chose to draw a shot from the rooftop kiss scene (if you didn’t love it you’re probably watching the wrong show) but I did specifically choose to draw Jung-hoo studying Young-shin’s face because I felt like that’s what really added the magic. The way that he looked at her was filled with a tenderness that belies his other personas, but the fact that the looked at her for so long (before and after) was telling too. This wasn’t some impetuous wrist-grab kiss, and it also wasn’t a kiss planned to be the first of many. It was a single moment to be treasured, and it felt like Jung-hoo was trying to memorize every second of it.

Jung-hoo knew exactly what he was doing, and didn’t act out of weakness or broken resolve. Of course this was something he wanted, but it also wasn’t his first rooftop meeting where he wanted to kiss her. The difference this time was that he saw how much it hurt Young-shin to think that Healer kept helping her for money, and that wasn’t something he could abide, so it gave him the push he needed. It’s bittersweet for both of them though: for Jung-hoo because he doesn’t think it can happen again, and for Young-shin because she doesn’t understand why it can’t.

Although I was pretty freaking giddy when I first watched this scene, all that bittersweetness primarily makes me sad when I look at this image. Jung-hoo deserves this moment without having to hide his identity and leave it behind him. I’m glad he hasn’t turned into a pile of mush and just thrown his life aside, but a part of me wants to berate him for not just giving up his courier job, confessing, and living a normal life. I don’t think that would be the right thing to do with everything he’s currently caught up in, but I don’t think that’s his problem. I think he’s afraid to live, and afraid to be left.

I think what makes this romance work particularly well is that Jung-hoo is essentially competing with himself (instead of the typical love triangle) and that gives us a lot of OTP screen time while also allowing the relationship(s) to develop slowly and not get stale. Unfortunately neither version of Jung-hoo is quite the real him, so matter what he does he’ll feel like he’s lost, at least until he comes clean. Initially I thought that dorky Bong-soo was nothing other than a disguise, but the more I watch Jung-hoo the more I realize he’s not just badass Healer, and he’s actually adorably awkward in a lot of situations (even when he’s not putting on a show). Bong-soo also represents Jung-hoo’s emotional side, and since he can tell himself he’s just acting, he’s free to speak and feel in ways that would normally be too scary for him. As a result I think he’s starting to recognize how much healthier Bong-soo is than Healer. When he asks Young-shin out as Bong-soo it doesn’t just feel like a desperate Plan B since Healer can’t be in a relationship. It feels like Healer is someone he no longer wants to be.

A lot of the time it actually feels less like we’re discovering who Jung-hoo is, and more like we’re watching him be born. Up until now he’s never really existed in the real world since Healer is someone who lives in the shadows, separate from society. What makes this “birth” even more enjoyable is that he’s discovering the real world through Young-shin’s eyes. In Healer’s world Jung-hoo is the absolute expert, but Young-shin’s world is a mystery to him. He looks completely stunned by his co-workers’ reactions to their first live broadcast, as if he’d never thought of an achievement beyond completing a courier job before. He seems equally mystified by friendships, doting family, and Young-shin’s hilarious dancing. It’s tragic that his life has been so sheltered, but that just makes such scenes even more uplifting to watch.

What also helps this romance work is that there are none of the typical misunderstandings or convenient obstacles to make every episode feel like an agonizing drag. Both characters fully acknowledge their feelings, so there is no pining for second leads or obtuse denial of attraction. Instead of hitting our heads against the wall we understand why they’re not together (yet) and we can just enjoy watching their relationship progress alongside the plot. It’s perfection.

Anyways, back to the drawing! My goal was to make it feel wintery and soft, so I kept the colors pastelly and didn’t try anything dramatic. It’s such a sweet moment that I didn’t want the image to feel harsh or contrasty, and I think I mostly succeeded. I tried out a new medium in Corel Painter (one of the wet gouache brushes) and I think I’ll have to add it to my arsenal (although I still have a lot of experimenting to do). I kinda just want to draw Healer exclusively from now on (not that I will) since it has such great material and so much variety (if they could just shoot a few scenes wearing hanbok I’d be set).

In retrospect I’m a little embarrassed that I just gushed about romance for this entire post, but blame the drama, not the viewer! I won’t have a new drawing for you for the next two weeks, but I’ll be squealing with the rest of you in the meantime. Happy Healer watching!

That's a beautiful picture Fanderay!I loved that scene just as much as you do.Great analysis of the scene as well. Ji Chang-wook acts out all these character nuances in a way that makes Healer truly winning for me. I totally agree that Jung-hoo is neither 100% Healer nor Bong-soo. He is definitely suave, cool and composed like Healer is, but his Bong-soo side allows him to show his loving, playful and communicative side. I don't mind if you draw healer for the rest of the shows run, because each episode is filled with at least one awesome scene of the OTP.

When I saw the stills and teasers for Healer a few months ago, I scoffed. How dare this show have the audacity to copy and try and be like the great City Hunter. How dare PMY kill all hopes of doing a CH season 2 by playing a role similar to Nana.

And then halfway through this drama, and as profusely take back every harsh word I have said about this drama. This drama has exceeded everyone's expectations, I'm sure. Before, only 4 kdrama scenes had left me hyperventilating, gasping for air and stating into space for a long time - end of CH ep 4 when Yoonsung rescued Nana from a bullet, ep 7 when Nana shoots him in the back, ep 10 when Yoon sung is reached from the clutches of Youngju, and when Yoon sung realises that she knows he is the CH, and ep 11 when Nana takes a bullet for him.

Now add the last 10 or so mins of Healer ep 8, perhaps the scene(s) in a kdrama and the best possible ending to a kdrama ep. The elevator rescuing, the kiss, the preciously unmovable and cold Healer feeling attraction... Beautiful.

This drama is crack and I hope Koreans will realise that they are missing out. The ratings should be on YFAS level.

I agree with you that Healer is an excellent drama!!! Their rating should have gone much higher than what it is now!!

However, I have to say that over all "Healer" has a better story line than "City Hunter". The first half of CH is better, but the ending of CH is rather disappointing. I was so sad and angry for what happened to the prosecutor. It's just too dark for me. On the contrary, Healer hasn't let me down.

Well .... I am an avid PMY supporter. I hope she won't take part in CH season 2 if LMH is in the picture. I doubt she will anyway because LMH just broke her heart into million pieces.

Thanks, Fanderay!!! Now cover your ears: SQUEEEEEE!!!!

I think Healer/JCW is making us all gush... (okay, I'll stop there, since things turn R-rated very quickly where the Healer thread is concerned!)

Love the texture of his hair and her knit beanie!

I agree about him being "reborn" through Young Shin's eyes, and living a half-existence in the shadows until now. I mentioned (on the Healer Ep 10 thread) that both "Healer" and "Bong Soo" are just a small part of the real Jung Hoo, and that the "Healer" publication was a group effort, so he can't be the "Healer" by himself!

It's beautiful that Young Shin has been such a catalyst for him - he was the guy that hated people paying attention to him and showing a personal interest. Now he's confessing that he would live the way she wants him to live, as the person she wants him to be! And they haven't even realised that they're childhood "sweethearts" yet! Now, that's the kind of destined connection that makes my heart melt!

Let's all just agree on the fact that Healer could not be played by any other person than Ji Chang Wook, ok? Because he's perfect in every sense of the word and never have I wanted to be Park Min Young more. I hope she knows how fortunate she is and treasures every moment of his perfectness. (Can you tell I love him? Because I do.)

Also, LOVE the artwork, as always!

I love the picture. Also, I love the detail you gave to the knit hat. It looks wonderful.

This show caught me completely off guard. I wasn't even going to watch it originally! Once I saw the City Hunter-esque teasers, I thought I'd at least check it out. But the show has been SO AMAZING. I didn't think I'd love a drama so much so soon especially just coming off of Misaeng. Healer is filling the void or Misaeng but in such a different way.

Is it blasphemy to say that I'm loving this more than City Hunter? Jung Soo has just had such a terrible life and it's beautiful how he is experiencing these things all for the first time.

This show caught me completely off guard too! Though lots of people compared Healer with City Hunter, I personally think they're very different.
Confession time: I don't like City Hunter (don't throw stones at me). Though it wasn't bad, it was not exactly fantastic too. To put it simply, it didn't excite me.

On the other hand, Healer, is a different story. I can't wait to see how the story evolves and the OTP are so worth cheering for.

It has been pure enjoyment reading your every word. ;)

Thank you so much for articulating what has been on my mind (and I bet also on the minds of many others)! ;)

Healer may well be on its way to becoming THE drama (unless the writer stumbles from here on out) -
THE drama that we will be talking and fangirling about for a long time to come,
for all the layers and nuances it has to offer us,
there does not seem to be an end
to the peeling off
and unraveling
of its awesomeness.

We are JUST getting started on this EPIC journey. ;)

Fanderay, your drawing is so beautiful, as always...but you drew Healer for the THIRD time! I don't know if you ever did that with other dramas. And I don't blame you if you want to draw Healer exclusively. If I could draw, I have no idea how many drawings I would make of Healer only. JCW's has like so many different expressions in only one scene. His eyes, mouth, jaws.. moves..if ever so slightly, but we kinda know how he feels just by looking at his FACE. And don't let me start with his lips...*beep--Rated R* LOL

And your comment! It's amazingly beautiful! Your words are so beautiful. It's like I'm watching the drama all over again, but with you as the narator, and it's a beautiful experience. How many times am I going to write the word beautiful, oh my, I should stop LOL

For me, I really love the wardrobe for our OTP in this scene. It's so perfect for them and the scene. JCW's sweater really brings out his beautiful jawline (and handsome face, offcourse, squeee!) And his jacket highlights his broad 50 cm-shoulders (squeee again). And what did I want to say about PMY again? *lost in thought*

Wow beautifully written and amazingly drawn. I felt you analyzed the scene so incredibly that it makes me want to go back and savor the moment again by rewatching it. It was indeed so bittersweet and he needed to treasure that moment because in all of his life he had never had that feeling of someone loving him. His mother, teacher, father, etc all have abandoned him. So in his loneliness..in that darkness..he sees her as a glimmer of hope and light.

So addicted to this show, and I just started it two days ago. I'm in love with ji chang wook and all the characters he is displaying. Can't wait for the next episode to air.

Thank you for that beautiful drawing and insightful comment.

Love the drawing. Like most fans of this drama, I went into it not expecting anything because I was conned into thinking that Pinocchio was the biggest thing since slice cheese. I mean, come on, we remembered people sneering that healer was just a carbon copy of Pinocchio, right? You remember that, right?
I had a week before starting a new job so I clicked on healer and watched the first episode before the holidays began. Then paused it because I was bored then rewatched it again then paused it then rewatched again until it was Saturday and I had to work Monday and I was running out of time so I finally finished the first episode. Wasn’t too impressed about it to be honest. It was the second episode that got to me. I love that impromptu dance in front of the geeky jung-ho. It said something about a character I find so lacking in Pinocchio.
I like that most of the characters in this drama has a backstory that not only held up any loose ends but tied the whole thing together so we can pinpoint from a to z and still find that they connect at some level of the story. And I love that most characters seem to hold on to some memory of pain they can’t let go of. The brothers, the hacker, the teacher, the sister-in-law, even young-shin seem to circle around that pain that closely connects them.
What I’m really glad about is that healer has finally surpassed the drama it has been unfairly compared to in the beginning. Pinocchio stars two of the biggest actors in k-dramaland but even their charm and magnetic presence cannot bail out a sinking ship since a wailing mess of an iceberg struck at the heart of it. The drama looks good though production wise and the production design is near to perfection. But it is the little things in life that makes a colorful palette well, colorful. And a story drama more compelling and watchable.
I don’t know who the writer is of healer but pat yourself on the back, dude. You’ve done a really good job with this one. A really good job.

I started to watch pinocchio too before healer. Liked both of them, then something started to change in my interest for these 2 dramas: I dropped completely pinocchio after 10 eps, and I got obsessed by healer, like majorly. Its writer does an amazing job with the characters, fleshing them out gradually with each episode. I think one of the problems I had with pinocchio were the characters' motivations and their weak and stale structure/presentation, almost clicheic. It had started so well though.

Thank you, Fanderay, you've captured this glorious moment amazingly! The rooftop kiss scene was an absolute "KYAAAA" moment for me and this pic just reminds me just why!!

What makes this moment so meaningful and surreal is that Jung-hoo finally let go of his defenses of his own accord, and acknowledged that he needs Young-shin's understanding and trust..! Young-shin was embarrassed 'cos she has been so transparent wrt. her feelings in front of him, but he realized he wanted just that! He wanted her love, it was his one redeeming quality... His ray of hope when he felt that he had no reason to carry on.. So, he decided to bare his feelings, tell her that his feelings were the same, possibly even stronger.. just so she does not misunderstand or forget him.... He does not know if he deserves her or not, but he knows that he needs her... No words were needed to explain how he felt at the moment, just one tender kiss to tell her that her feelings, her trust meant the world to him!

AHHHHHHH, are you trying to kill us all over again?!

This painting is lovely :) And you're analysis, I mean, you completely nailed it. The bittersweetness of the single moment that may never occur again, how Bong-soo is becoming an emotional outlet for Jung-hoo, how he's opening himself up to the world for the first time.

All of this, just makes this romance more affecting than any other one I've experienced in recent years. AND when you add the fact that it gets to develop gradually alongside an interesting, exciting plot, thus managing to stay completely fresh throughout the course of the drama...well, let's just say, you have me addicted.

Beautiful drawing. Amazing drama.
Actors are great, story is great, backstory is really interesting, music is also really nice. At first I thought the timing for the ost eternal love was a bit strange (during an action scene - several times), but later I thought it made sense, since they don't want to give the viewers the feeling that the actions scenes are just plainly action. For example the scene in ep 4/5 when Jung Hoo saves Young Shin. It wasn't just plainly Jung Hoo showing off his skills, but it was like a turning point. Saving her might bring him in danger, but he still did it. I think the music helps to show a different side of these scenes.

And I really like that the episodes seems to get better and better. I think many people decided not to watch this at first after reading the synopsis, since it doesn't really explain the story well. But that's one of the cool things about this drama. You don't know what to expect at first and they don't just tell the entire backstory in episode 1 and then show the viewer what happens next. No, slowly, every episode just enough, they give us more details and a different view on the story.

I really like it~~

And I hope the ratings will improve. I know that some dramas got less episodes because of low ratings and I don't want Healer to have a last minute script change..

Healer totally deserves higher ratings than it is currently getting. I know people say ratings aren't everything, and in no way does it affect my ability to love a drama, but in the cutthroat environment of the entertainment industry, it kind of is.

Also, I just want this great to show and the amazing actors to get the kind of acknowledgement that they deserve. I want them to know that this kind of high quality show is greatly appreciated and that we want more of these kind of dramas with this level of acting.

Even though the ratings aren't reflective of the quality, I hope the online buzz is helping to offset any feelings of disappointment on the part of the cast and crew!

Healer, hwaiting!!

I've been promoting my family and friends around me to watch it, but we are not Korean! :-o
I love this drama almost every part of it. Many of you have described how good Healer is, so I am not gonna repeat again.
