Kill Me, Heal Me: Episode 3

This show keeps getting better and better! We get a healthy dose of action and humor this time around, with help from another of Do-hyun’s alter egos. More of the general picture is revealed, but the secrets of the past are still hidden from us, as they are from Do-hyun. Hints of Do-hyun’s true strength of character shine through, however, proving that some people do grow stronger in proportion to the burdens they carry.

EPISODE 3 RECAP

Cha Do-hyun’s ajusshi alter ego Perry Park has arrived, which is bad news for Do-hyun, Chief Ahn, and especially Ri-jin, who’s still tied up in a warehouse somewhere. Perry finds his old clothes in storage, while Chief Ahn tries to convince him to make an appearance at the company meeting. Perry only wants to enjoy his freedom while it lasts, but when Chief Ahn offers to buy him a boat his face lights up.

Unfortunately for Chief Ahn, that’s when Ri-jin’s kidnapper calls back. He repeats his demand for the leather jacket, while Ri-jin tries to shout through the duct tape over her mouth that she has the damn jacket, not him.

Perry doesn’t like that someone is threatening a woman to get to him, and demands to know where the kidnapper is. Chief Ahn reminds Perry of his promise to go to the meeting, but apparently not even a boat can convince him to turn his back on a damsel in distress.

The board meeting is about to begin, with no sign of Do-hyun. His grandmother, the chairwoman, waits at the head of the table. Ki-joon’s father smirks maliciously when he sees that Do-hyun has yet to arrive.

Meanwhile Ri-jin’s kidnapper prepares for the arrival of Shin Se-gi. He directs his men to attack him for practice, simulating how they will attack Se-gi. “Slowly!” he chides them. “Why so fast? Do you have an appointment or something?” The mock brawl comes to an abrupt halt when they realize they have an intruder in their midst. Perry Park has arrived, and he’s carrying what look like a pair of bombs.

Chief Ahn informs Grandma Seo that Do-hyun may not be able to attend the meeting. She lies to the company executives that her grandson was in a car accident, so his introduction will have to wait.

Since Perry Park brought bombs to a fist fight, the thugs hesitate to attack him. He tells them how he was famous for making bombs back on Jeju Island, and they should have let him enjoy his freedom instead of provoking him.

While most of the thugs are cowering, however, one bad guy creeps up from behind. Ri-jin’s muffled screams alert Perry to his danger. He dodges the first blow, but one of the bombs goes flying from his hand.

Bad guys scatter, the boss dives headfirst into a laundry basket, and the timer reaches zero… ding! A cheerful recorded voice informs those gathered in the warehouse that their rice is fully cooked. With the threat of explosion removed, the thugs begin beating the living daylights out of poor Perry Park.

A tracking device slips out of Perry’s jacket, and we see that Chief Ahn has been on the trail the whole time. He and Do-hyun arranged this beforehand, as a way to keep tabs on Do-hyun even after his other personalities took control. The kidnapper guesses that “Shin Se-gi” faked a saturi accent and brought dud bombs to buy time for the police to arrive.

Secure in a new location, an underling complains to the boss about having to go to all this trouble for the stupid jacket. Why can’t they just pay back the cost of the drugs inside? But it turns out to be the jacket that matters, since it was made by a master leather craftsman in Italy, who is no longer alive to make another one. HA! Who does that remind us of?

A text arrives on Ri-jin’s phone—it’s a picture of Ri-on wearing the elusive leather jacket! The boss screams at Ri-jin to identify the guy in the picture, forgetting the duct tape over her mouth. Once the underling takes off the tape, Ri-jin tears into the bumbling bad guys for going to all this unnecessary trouble when she could have brought them the jacket ages ago.

The thugs put Ri-jin on speakerphone, so they can hear what she says. Ri-on is at the family restaurant, partying with some friends who helped him with his latest mystery novel.

That seems to spark an idea, and Ri-jin says oh-so-casually that since they’re talking about his novel, Chapter Three really struck a chord with her. Since Ri-jin so rarely compliments him, Ri-on is taken aback and wonders what’s wrong. There’s a long pause, after which Ri-on accuses her of trying to get out of repaying the money she borrowed from him. So close, and yet so far…

Once Ri-jin finds out that Ri-on will be staying with his friends all night, the kidnapper cuts the call short. He takes most of his boys to retrieve the jacket, leaving one man to keep an eye on Ri-jin and Perry Park.

Ri-jin and Perry are now on their own, tied up in the storage room. She remembers all of their encounters, each time with a different tone, personality, and look in his eyes. Perry starts convulsing in the way that signals his transformations.

Outside the locked storage room, the thug on guard duty sees the bombs left by Perry Park. He hefts one, chuckling at the failed ruse, and tosses it carelessly on the ground. The timer begins counting down from thirty minutes—and this one probably didn’t come from a rice cooker.

Do-hyun, now back in control of his mind and body, looks up and sees Ri-jin. A weary, wonderful smile lights up his face when he realizes she is unharmed. He lies that he sometimes passes out if he gets angry or drinks too much, and Ri-jin doesn’t bother to voice her suspicions. She calmly assures him that she’s fine, and that the thugs went to collect the leather jacket.

Do-hyun wonders why Ri-jin seems so unconcerned about the bruisers about to beat up her brother, but Ri-jin says everything will be fine. Do-hyun stops pestering her when he remembers that Ri-jin is supposedly a psychiatric patient.

With surprising ease, Do-hyun frees himself from his ropes and goes to untie Ri-jin. He explains that he’s found himself in some tight spots over the years, so he’s had to learn things like this. Ri-jin repeats Se-gi’s words from the night at the club, confirming that Do-hyun indeed doesn’t remember what he said.

“What is your name?” she asks. Instead of answering, Do-hyun responds with a question of his own: Does Ri-jin want to escape?

The sole remaining guard hears Ri-jin scream and rushes into the storage room. Distracted by Ri-jin feigning unconsciousness on the floor, the guard notices Do-hyun too late and is easily subdued. When Do-hyun goes to search for the exit, however, the guard takes Ri-jin hostage and holds a knife to her throat.

“She’s a megalomaniac!” Do-hyun warns the guard, prompting a hilarious Who, me?! from Ri-jin. “Don’t get her worked up!” Ri-jin is more worried about Do-hyun, and tells him to stay calm and breathe.

That’s when the bomb on the floor announces that the countdown has begun—there’s only a minute left. Do-hyun says that he didn’t disable the safety mode last time, asking whether the guard wants to wager his life on the chance that he’s lying. The guard shoves Ri-jin away and runs for the exit, while Do-hyun rushes Ri-jin into the hallway mere seconds before the bomb explodes. Looks like Perry Park knew what he was doing after all!

The kidnapper arrives at the restaurant with his thugs and demands to know where Ri-on is. The assembled men don’t even bother to respond, ignoring the show of force. Then Ri-on appears with the jacket and spills the hidden drugs all over the floor. His guests identify themselves as police officers—because who else would be better able to consult on a murder mystery, right?—and put the thugs in cuffs. All traces of his buffoon personality gone, Ri-on demands to know where they are keeping his sister.

Still injured from his previous beating, Do-hyun nevertheless manages to carry Ri-jin away from the source of the explosion. As fire rages all around them, Ri-jin nears the edge of consciousness. Looking around, Do-hyun spies a motorcycle a short distance away. He ties Ri-jin securely to the back seat and tears away, while the warehouse goes up in flames behind him.

Fading in and out of consciousness in a hospital bed, Ri-jin sees Do-hyun standing over her. He apologizes sincerely for putting her in danger, and for not being able to tell her why she was in danger. “I hope you never again have the misfortune of meeting me.”

Ri-on finds his sister recovering in the hospital. Ri-jin is glad he understood her coded message after all—the chapter she mentioned featured a kidnapping and drugs hidden inside clothing, which was enough for Ri-on to figure out the rest. Brother and sister break out an adorable secret handshake to celebrate their victory.

Meanwhile Do-hyun, bloodied and exhausted, asks Chief Ahn to take him to the company meeting. In the boardroom, Ki-joon’s father muses that Do-hyun must be gravely injured to miss such an important introduction, and urges the chairwoman not to keep people waiting any longer. Just then the doors fly open and Do-hyun enters, looking pretty darn snazzy in his suit.

Do-hyun addresses the assembled executives, apologizing for his tardiness. He says that his accident was an uncontrollable variable, much like his own promotion or the unpredictable vagaries of the future.

“But I will face the ever-changing world with something unchangeable inside of me,” he promises. “With determination, spirit, effort… and identity.” Ki-joon, watching Do-hyun like a hawk, sees blood dripping from Do-hyun’s sleeve.

After the meeting, Grandma Seo brings Do-hyun to her office to chew him out for being late in front of so many people who wish to see him fail. She says that if he knows what his father did for him, how he sacrificed himself so Do-hyun could be part of the Seungjin Group family, he shouldn’t be so careless. “Until my son can sit in that chair,” Grandma screams, “you must do everything you can to protect this company.” Damn… Grandma Seo is scary.

In a medical facility somewhere, Do-hyun’s mother stops outside of a door with CHA JOON-PYO on the nameplate. She thanks her hired tracker for finding her husband, then goes inside to sit beside his bed.

Ri-jin calls her mother to reassure her. Her parents have whipped up enough food to feed an army, and want to send it with Ri-on so Ri-jin can regain her strength.

Ri-jin’s father asks for the leather jacket Ri-on took from him. He wants to lose weight so he can wear it, since he still thinks it was a gift from Ri-jin. Ri-on snaps at his father to move on, then has to react quickly to keep from getting hit by the ladle his mother throws at him for being rude. I love this family.

Do-hyun consults with Chief Ahn while stitching up his own wound. Apparently his experiences over the years have given him a basic knowledge of field-dressing injuries, along with his rope-escaping abilities and high tolerance for pain. Still under the impression that Ri-jin has a mental illness, Do-hyun asks Chief Ahn to pay for her treatment and look out for her until she is discharged.

A little while later, Ri-jin enters her hospital room to find balloons, gifts, and a note wishing her well. She flashes back to the storage room, when Do-hyun was so considerate of her. “Could it be… Gentleman?” she muses. I love that she’s started giving nicknames to his personalities.

Ri-on arrives to share the food from their parents, along with some contraband beer. They discuss the mysterious stranger who rescued her, and his multiple personalities. Ri-jin thinks that he might cultivate these personalities as defense mechanisms against a cruel world, just like how Ri-on is both himself and Omega-3, the mystery writer swathed in mystery.

“But what if it isn’t a defense mechanism, but a trap?” she asks, growing pensive. How difficult it would be, she thinks, if he couldn’t control the personalities within his mind. How terrifying, and how lonely… Ri-on asks if she likes this man, but Ri-jin closes that line of questioning by saying that they aren’t likely to meet again anyway.

Do-hyun sleeps poorly that night, troubled by dreams of his childhood trauma. His younger self pleads for forgiveness, huddling back against the wall of a dark basement. A shadowy figure advances upon him, which is when Do-hyun bolts awake, gasping.

The next day, Ki-joon directs an employee to search all the hospitals in Seoul for a record of Do-hyun checking in. He wants to follow up on Do-hyun’s car accident story, no doubt to gain leverage for his dastardly schemes.

Do-hyun takes a tour through the ID Entertainment division, where they make sets for use in dramas and films. Chae-yeon sees him and calls out a greeting, but Do-hyun pretends not to hear.

That won’t fly for Chae-yeon, however, who gets Do-hyun alone for a nice lunch. She reminds him of what he said to her—that she should ignore him if he acts unlike himself, calls her late at night, or otherwise crosses a line.

“Try it,” she tells him. “Cross that line that can’t be crossed. I’m curious to see whether I’ll beat you up… or cross over with you.” Do-hyun replies that she can’t handle someone like him, and leaves after promising to forget what she just said. Somehow, though, I don’t think challenging this girl is going to scare her away…

At the hospital, Chief Ahn talks with Dr. Seok about how the multiple personalities are getting more dangerous. Chief Ahn hopes that they can find someone to be Do-hyun’s secret physician, so he can receive treatment without betraying his weakness to his family.

Ri-jin enters, and Chief Ahn finally finds out that she is a doctor, not a patient. You can practically see the lightbulb turn on over his head. He leaves the two of them alone.

Ri-jin asks Dr. Seok if she can return to work, denying any lingering symptoms after the trauma of her kidnapping. She turns back a moment later, though, and asks about the patient in America with dissociative identity disorder that she remembers Dr. Seok talking about once. Hmm… sounds familiar.

Multiple misunderstandings are cleared up at once, as Chief Ahn reports to Do-hyun about Ri-jin being a doctor and Ri-jin learns that her savior and Dr. Seok’s D.I.D. patient are one and the same. Do-hyun leaves immediately to meet with Ri-jin face-to-face.

At the hospital, Dr. Seok relates how he met Do-hyun in America and came to believe his story. Seven years of treatment allowed the doctor to get to know all of Do-hyun’s personalities, but it wasn’t enough for him to help Do-hyun recover the traumatic childhood memories that he has suppressed.

Ri-jin understands that Do-hyun must have compartmentalized his psyche as a defensive measure, which has indeed become a trap. She and Dr. Seok both feel for Do-hyun, trapped in a never-ending war against himself, and unable to tell the very people he should be able to rely on for help and support.

While wandering aimlessly through the hospital, thinking about Do-hyun’s predicament, Ri-jin runs into our favorite club-rat Heo Suk-hee. She chases Suk-hee outside the hospital, just as a car pulls up in front. Ri-jin saves Suk-hee by tackling her out of the way.

Do-hyun hastily exits the car to check on them, and recognizes Suk-hee from Club Paradise. “It’s that doctor…” he says, just as orderlies rush out to frog-march Suk-hee back inside. She reminds him of what she said before, of the feeling of having many selves locked inside of you. “I think we’ll be good friends!” Suk-hee yells as she is dragged into the hospital. “Let’s meet again, Club Paradise’s Prince! Let’s meet again!

Do-hyun muses that Ri-jin really is a doctor. He asks if she saw the moment when he changed, and when she replies that she did, he wonders why she isn’t scared of him.

“Because I still don’t know who you are,” Ri-jin replies. “Excuse me, but… who are you? By any chance, do you have a bomb?” Do-hyun shakes his head. “Then do you have a leather jacket?” Ri-jin asks. Smiling now, Do-hyun shakes his head once more. “Then… what is your name?”

Do-hyun meets her gaze steadily. “I—with this face and this look in my eyes—am Cha Do-hyun.”

COMMENTS

I absolutely loved this episode! It had a little bit of everything, ranging from action to boardroom thriller to romance without missing a beat. Even better, the show manages all of these styles without losing sight of the humor that keeps some of the more dramatic elements from feeling overwrought.

As has been mentioned in the comments, Ri-jin sure does scream a lot. It doesn’t bother me yet—in fact, I love that her instinctive reaction to cheesy pick-up lines is to shriek—but it will get old fast if that’s her go-to reaction any time she’s startled or in a situation spinning out of control. I don’t think the show will make that mistake though, especially not after the hilarious moment with the duct tape in the opening scene, which I think showed an awareness of Ri-jin’s tendency to, uh, speak her mind. Those gangsters could have saved themselves so much trouble if they’d just let a girl talk once in a while.

The tension within the family is heating up nicely, and we’ve discovered something very important: Grandma Seo is nutso. After seeing her flip out at Do-hyun after the meeting, I’m starting to think severe personality swings might just be a hereditary thing in their family.

It’s good to get a little more background on this family, but I hope the secrets and the in-fighting don’t outshine the growing relationships between the characters of the younger generation.

Speaking of whom, I find myself really liking Chae-yeon so far, without actually wanting her to succeed. It seems she’s attracted to power, or at least to someone who’s willing to paint outside the lines, so Do-hyun’s uncharacteristic changes naturally intrigue her.

It’s interesting to see her playing with fire, not realizing that she ought to be careful what she wishes for. I would dearly love to see her arrange a date with Do-hyun, only for Perry Park to arrive with his Hawaiian shirt and a few homemade bombs. Chae-yeon might think she wants to “cross a few lines” with Do-hyun (and really, can you blame her?), but she still has no idea what that entails. Call me a sadist, but I can’t wait to see what happens when she finally figures it out.

I’ve read a few comments saying they prefer Shin Se-gi to Cha Do-hyun, and some people have even said that Do-hyun has no personality at all. Now, I understand the attraction to the bad guy with the leather jacket and the mean right hook, but I still find Do-hyun by far the most interesting of the personalities. For Do-hyun, self-control is the one thing he values most—not to mention the most dearly bought—even if self-control isn’t always the most expressive of emotions onscreen.

That’s not to say that Do-hyun is bland or uninteresting. His anguish is real, as we saw in an earlier episode when he looks in his car mirror and promises Se-gi that if he gets stronger, Do-hyun will as well. And one of the clear highlights of this episode (which I thought was exceptional all around) was when Do-hyun made his appearance at the meeting, mere hours after nearly being blown up.

Do-hyun isn’t a blank slate at all—he has an identity of his own, as he announces to the board members at the meeting. It’s just that he doesn’t know quite what it is yet, when he isn’t fighting to assert control over the other selves lurking inside him. He may have promised to stand strong in the face of the ever-changing world, but we know he was also talking about holding fast against his ever-changing self. To do that, he needs to discover and protect that unchanging core of his selfhood, the part of his identity separate from the unwanted house-guests in his psyche.

I thought the show addressed this issue in an interesting way at the end of the episode, when Ri-jin finally learns Do-hyun’s real name. “Do you have a bomb?” she asks. “Do you have a leather jacket?”

As viewers we often have to rely on clumsy visual aids to tell personalities apart, like Perry Park’s bombs and silly shirts, or Se-gi with his violet eyes (framed with guyliner, of course!) and leather jacket. Do-hyun is the only personality so far whom we don’t associate with some signifying feature, some essential symbol inextricably linked to who and what he is. But that lack is not absence so much as it is Do-hyun’s unexplored potential, his inability to be reduced to a few representative quirks. Ri-jin is about to begin discovering Do-hyun’s identity on a deeper level than bombs or leather jackets or even, dare I say it, smoldering eyes—and we’ll be along for the ride.

Without the exuberant excess of his multiple personalities, who is Cha Do-hyun? I can’t wait to find out!

Yay! First to comment!!

Thanks for the awesome update, purplecow!!

This episode was so so awesome! Like mentioned previously, even I thought that Cha Do-hyun had no personality whatsoever. But the moment he realized that someone(oh Ri-jin) was depending on him to be saved, the change he went through was actually good. That rescue was so badass (with the awesome OST, I might add)

I am loving Ji-sung's acting here. The despair in his eyes really gets to me, and that last scene in which he has that kind of self-mocking look every time he says no to Ri-jin was touching.

I know a lot of people seemed to think he had no personality but I think he's just holding back because he can't open himself to anyone. I think the "gentleman" is just fine as is personality wise....but he obviously needs to deal with some things in the past. I think he's responsible and caring and intelligent.

And yes, Ji Sung's acting is really fantastic. I'm honestly not familiar with his other work (I've only seen him on Running Man...) but I'm impressed.

I was one of those people but now it indeed seems Do Hyun has found some determination and is wavering especially in his decision not to make any friends or let anyone get close to him. actually it is like a self-made trap cause the more people know, the less easy it is for Se Gi or any other of them to mess with anyone or confuse them. but those need to be loyal people. it is like the buddhist principle that giving in is being strong. if this course doesnt take you anywhere for 11 years, you need to change the flow of your thoughts.

I thought from watching that Cha Do-hyun's personality was being the Good Student, a punctual perfectionist type that is always very humble.

Well that's certainly what everyone else sees him as, and it seems like a lot of viewers think he's boring. But I think he's more than that...but he's worked very hard to keep that image so nobody gets any glimpse of what's going on with him.

But also can I just add that (American) football is not really the smartest idea for someone who can be triggered by violence?

I thought his Multiple Personality Disorder only came out after he was beaten by his friend's step dad? No?

Cause, technically... DH that we know was the one before MPD not after he has MPD. All those good students personality was him before the disorder.

So... who know who he is right now? He might be the same prior to the disorder or a changed man. Cause from what I had observed, it seems like he was different from when he was beaten.

He's clearly had it since he was young, thus the flashbacks. I'm not saying the football created it, I'm saying that the other personalities come out when triggered, and he's already mentioned here that one of the ways is if he's hurt or there's an act of violence.

I totally agree with you andromeda!!! You have said everything that I wanted to say! Ji Sung's and Hwang Jung Eum's acting is spectacular. They bring out the nuances in their characters and the potential in how far the script can go with such a setting. I love all of their interactions in this episode (and every other episode :D) because they never break character: Ri Jin's chemistry is palpable with Shin Se Gi, Cha Do Hyun, and even Perry Park which is an incredible feat considering how different they are. This in a nutshell is why I love Kill Me Heal Me: the characters all seem real thanks to the spectacular acting!

I'm with you, I can't wait to see more of Cha Do Hyun. He's such a good guy, and not at all boring. He was a bit unassuming in the first two episodes, to be fair, but this episode showed that he is a strong personality in his own right. I love SeGi because he's entertaining and hot but Do Hyun is the guy that I want to go home with.

true, I have to admit Do Hyun was very much THE hero in this episode. with determination. but I want to see him grow into his OWn personality even more.

the thing with the speculations alst time that se Gi might be he real one, I think differently now. cause then it doesnt add up. he wants Do hyun to never gain back his memories. why, if it would put things back in place, restore the original state? that doesnt match with the theory.

I wonder

it is a good thing the show keeps us curious and guessing

I think the original has to be Do Hyun because the original personality isn't aware of the other personalities. I mean he'll know he has blackouts and other people will tell him about his other personalities but other personalities can be aware of the others. Like when Se Gi mentions the other version with suicidal tendencies...he says he'll give it to him. It implies that both he and that other personality can intract i.e. they can know the actions of the others. Like Se Gi May leave the knife in a specific place for the other personality and that one will know.

That and Se Gi talks about putting DH to sleep indicates to me that even Se Gi knows that DH is the original.

Maybe this was already discussed, but I think Do Hyun is the real one and all his other personalities are also him to varying degrees. I wonder if it's a matter of Do Hyun coming to terms with his traumatic experience in order to bring all his personalities into one consciousness. It seems they're all fighting for space (through Do Hyun as the vessel) in order to voice/respond/assert/act on their feelings about what happened.

Interestingly, this drama made me watch other shows containing "multiple personality disorder". Like Shutter Island, Sybil (1975), Black Swan, Fight Club, and Do No Harm (American TV Series)

Any other recommendations?

The United States of Tara might work for you. That's kind of like a black comedy show that could be super funny at points, but also did a good job of displaying the darker consequences of having a personality disorder. I never really watched it to completion myself, but I enjoyed what I watched of it with my sister.

Check out Eyes of Laura Mars, a 1978 film starring Faye Dunaway and Tommy Lee Jones, which is set in the 1970's New York City high fashion world. I caught this on a late show a few years ago and thought it was an interesting thriller. Plus Tommy Lee Jones was a real babe in his youth. This would actually make a good K-drama remake.

I officially love this drama. And, with that wonderful scene at the end, I officially especially love our OTP. And all our lead actors and how they're acting their characters. I'm honestly just really surprised by how much I'm enjoying it so far and hope it continues to be this fun throughout.

Thanks so much for the recap.

P.S. I agree with you about Do-hyun! Honestly I love all his personalities equally, but I'm the most invested in him! Also similarly intrigued by Chae-yeon, although I wouldn't say I like her just yet.

I feel like there are so much to cover in this story (like it's a giant messed-up knot and I really wonder if they can manage to untangle it...)

Ji Sung and Hwang Jung Eun have a wonderful, winning formula. Their chemistry is electrifying, even with all the different personalities. It also helps that the soundtrack enhances their scenes together, here and with Secret too. And I'm just blown away by Ji Sung's performances thus far because he's able to give us (fun!) distinctive characters with varying emotions and personalities. For me, Perry Park is the winner so far, lol.

And Park Seo Joon can do no wrong. I love him. I can do without the potential fauxcest storyline though...

Park Seo Joon is doing wonderfully here!

I was surprised when I realized the drama was actually going to have a fauxcest storyline because that had never been in the descriptions I read leading up to it, but I have to say, if they're going to do it, thank god they picked Park Seo Joon because he's probably the only one who can make me not hate it (completely). That said, it would still be so great if he were actually her twin brother and just got his own love line...because I like their relationship the way it is now.

I don't think the fauxcest angle will happen, it just they are dangling it in the air to mislead on purpose. I could be wrong though. But about Park Seo Joon, I agree. If it wasn't him, I wouldn't be able to digest this part of the story-line. It would be too creepy for me. He has great and easy chemistry with HJE but I like them as siblings, don't want the family dynamic to change.

I would be surprised and love it if this drama avoided the fauxcest-love triangle and allow it to come from all Ji Sungs. Park Seo Joon is so winning that I wouldn't mind but he deserves better. There are hints of it so far and especially when Kim Seul Gi's character made the comment that the way he looked at her while she was sleeping wasn't very oppa-esque, while other co-workers said it was her oppa. But sorry, I think that's it ep 4 and this should just be ep 3 discussions. Nevertheless, everything is working out and coming together quite entertainingly, so I'll just enjoy the ride. :)

I can't wait to spend more time with the other personalities, especially Perry Park, lol. I call dibs on him and his Hawaiian shirts and bombs. :)

LOL Teletubbies Hahahaha so funny of you to mention that Redfox!

Ella, Perry Park is like a ticking time bomb, he is one of those guys that is laid back until you piss him off and then you are in big trouble.

Isn't all DH alter-ego personalities just different aspect of his own character/persona, but with each characteristic/personality they are more exaggerated when they appear?

Because DH is strong kickass bad like Ser gi but quick to think on his feet like perry park and his bomb. basically he is all these different sides to him.

Why is the twin brother acting like he has more than brotherly feeling for his sister?

I believe that all the personalities will fall in love with our Dr, but it seems that ser gi is the most affected by the Dr. He seems to recall her as his first love, mentioning that she called him out a long time ago so she should play with him. I wonder if when the realDH was younger, did our Dr mistakenly called out Ser Gi to play and that it was was so memoorable to ser gi that now in the present future, his alter self remembers her?

Can't stand all the women in this show when they are shouting, it really hurts the ears. Why does Grandma shout, why does DH mom always screech, it is not good, i tend to put volume on silent and read the sub instead.

interesting show, wasn't sure if I would like it, but so far so good, hope it can continue.

its always a KDrama staple to have yor immediate cousin, wanting to steal the company from the leading hero of the story. so both the cousin and his father are rotten fake phoney people who would stab DH in the back if they knew of his DID disorder.

I don't think CY would even be able to handle one man let alone all his other personalities. she seems so obvious and shallow in other aspects, she has a cold personality, she is compatible with the rotten cousin!

I know, right? Even when their characters were still strangers with each other (DH-RJ), their interactions were still so delicious to watched. A while ago some ppl in viki who don't watch Secret expressed concern that they can't imagine DH-RJ will be matched and shippable like SG-RJ hot interactions. Well now they know. Never underestimated JS-HJE's chemistry. They can just stand beside each other without talking and you still like to see it. I don't know why but those two just clicked as onscreen pair

I don't think DH is bland at all, in fact he's the most fascinating because he's got so much layers that it's hard to figure him out. All his other personalities are generally quite one dimensional, and all of those personalities merge together in DH.

Love love love the dynamic between DH and RJ and frankly I can't wait for more DH/RJ moments as they start to trust each other.

I don't think DH is bland either and also find him to be the most fascinating of all the personalities inhabiting the same body. He never knows what situation he's going to find himself in due to the actions, over which he has no control, of his alter-egos. He might be tied to a chair in a building which is going to blow up or suspended head first over a large vat of water. He might be wounded so he's learned basic military style field dressing. He's a master of escaping from tricky situations. And not only has he learned to cope with all this but he's also trying to protect the people who might be hurt when one of his personalities chooses to make an appearance.

I agree with you guys. I mean how strong do you have to be, mentally and physically to be able to survive waking up in strange places, cleaning up after your own other self and just try to get yourself together every single second of your life. Always have to dread whether the next minute or hour you can disappear and someone else takes over your body.

I definitely am not strong enough. It shows how able and smart and cool-headed he is to be able to still keep it a secret and still exist in the world as a functioning human being.

Props to you Dohyun!

I can't wait to see how this will drama progress as he battle it out with himself and his other personalities so in the end, they can become one.

I dont think she is unaware of the danger, and I am sure there'll be many scenes when instead of CDY one of the black gang will show up. Its just that she isnt scared of them. They may be dangerous, but none tried to hurt her, and I think SG made quite an impression on her. As her colleagues said 'from her screams its not that she hates it', lol

I really like Cha Do Hyun. And Perry Park was pretty funny. Especially his accent.

I was kind of surprised when DH said that his identity was something unchangeable.

I think I'm one of the few people who likes CDH more than SSG, but I just think that he's really nice, responsible, doesn't want to hurt others, can also act really cute (beginning of episode 4 XD) and yeah.. he's having a hard time but still tries to make the best out of it.

"Kill Me, Heal Me" - Heal CDH by killing his alters? But I don't think he really has to get rid of them. They're somehow a part of him. Rather than "killing" his other personalities, I think he can learn something from and use the good part of them (although I'm not sure yet what he can learn from Yo Sub..).

I was one of those who wasn't too enthused about Cha Do Hyun in the beginning but Ji Sung won me over to that particular personality in this episode. He played it with just the right touch of pathos for me to begin to empathize. (Ji Sung is such amazingly gifted actor that I knew I'd enjoy this show but (and I know it's only ep. 3) my jaw drops at his ability to pull off the personalities so convincingly! I thought surely KMHM would be a disaster in the making, but after Healer this is the show I'm most excited to catch up with every week).

on the point.

I just didnt understand, why, when the goons moves perry and Ri Jin to a different location, why did they bring the bombs along?

the part between the women of the Cha family is still without subs so I didnt really get it but it seemed very tense

I've watched that women scene with subs---it will add more mystery for us.

Watching Ep 3 I realize how much power the Secretary has over DH and his personas.

- The personalities can't communicate with each other, which makes him the messenger. And he is obviously very partial. (As we see in him instructing Perry to go to the meeting instead of saving the girl like DH wanted.)

- And even if the personalities would leave each other messages, the Secretary could always intercept them.

In a way DH must depend on a man who he does not realize he shouldn't trust. Since the Secretary knows all perosnalities, they are at his mercy - and he can choose how to use them. It's quite scary.

I think you are on to something.
Ahn could change the flow of everything, and may have already, if he wanted to.

Also, he must have been VERY quick thinking/fast moving to find and plant the GPS on Perry who has on a new and different outfit from DH. Maybe there are several of them that he activates as needed?

It IS DH's idea, but how does he get SK to cooperate unless Ahn helps?

0

Required fields are marked *

You know, it's weird. I feel like the show itself hasn't given that many reasons to be distrustful of the secretary...and yet I just get these weird 'vibes' from him, like he doesn't have Do-hyun's best interest at heart. So that's why I totally got the same fear as you guys when I saw how much power he has! I want him to be good though. Do-Hyun seems like a character most in need of that 'trusted secretary' that every male lead in every drama ever has.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Hmmm... you are right, but I have gotten zero signals from the show or the character that we should be wary of him or not trust him. I think he could totally influence things just like you said, but I would guess not intentionally or with malicious intent- more like a dad who thinks he knows what's best for Do-hyun. Honestly it would take a special kind of commitment to stick with such a crazy and difficult boss for so long, and I honestly think he loves and cares about him. But we'll see how the relationship develops as the personalities are going to go even more out of control from now on. What will poor secretary Ahn do??

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Hopefully nothing bad.

He may be loyal, but I'm still not sure whom his loyalty is directed towards.
The fact that he wanted Perry to go to the meeting makes me wonder if Grandma has something to do with it.
Ahn did help SG/DH to get over to Korea, so he is interested in DH being a big ass CEO.
Just... why???

Michael - my theory - but a total guess!
All of DH's characters must know people independent of the DH persona. Michael may be a Perry supporter who had access to DH's things, too. Someone who worked in the apartment building?

Maybe not all of them - but at the very least SG and Perry (and maybe the suicidal one), because none of them were surprised to see Ahn around.

0

Required fields are marked *

I could be wrong (mostly because I confuse this shows depiction of the disorder with others) but I think the other personalities may be able to communicate somewhat with each other, just not the main personality. But I haven't seen episode 4 or anything so maybe not.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I was wondering about that too.

When DH speaks into a mirror, will the other personalities see and hear it? I think not, because every time a new personality surfaces, it doesn't know what happened in the meantime.

So, everytime the eyes change, the personality behind the eyes changes. They don't share the eyes!

Secretary Ahn is very interesting to me! He seems nice enough on the one hand, but on the other hand - he went against CDH's express wishes by trying to get PP to go to the meeting and that's ... pretty bad, in my books. YMMV, of course.

And ... is it just cut for humour, or did CDH actually black out in the middle of their conversation, in episode one, and not regain consciousness until he was on the plane? Because if it's not the cut, are we supposed to believe that Secretary Ahn didn't notice CDH being switched outfor SSG while they were talking?

But I had the impression that they can somehow.

If Secretary Ahn is the messenger amongst the personalities, how come he is unaware of the the clothes prepared for Perry Park?

Thank you for the recap! I find this show oddly entertaining. It´s like I don´t expect much, so it exceeds my expectations each and every time. Ji Sung is really good and pulls off all the different characters with ease, I just wish they wouldn´t have the changing of the eye color and what-not to ensure that the audience understands who´s at work in CDH body at the moment. Ji Sung makes it very clear with his acting already, so it really takes off the edge.
My favorite scene was the ending between Oh Ri-jin and Cha Do-hyun, when she asked his name (awww!). The actors really have a good rapport, warm and comfortable. I´m starting to expect more from now on, so be careful, show!

I am really looking forward to finding out what happened during Dohyun's childhood. And episode four hints at other connections.

Like purplecow, I do think that Dohyun's core self may be a lot more interesting and mysterious than his alters.

Does anyone here think that there might be more TO Kijoon's character than meets the eye? Again, I'm also thinking about some things that occur in the fourth episode, so maybe I should ask that question later. But what if he is not such a clear-cut enemy of Dohyun?

Now, is it just me or do I detect a certain weird vibe between the siblings. You know that scene in the hospital where they were talking about the multiple personalities...and Ri On stares at Ji Rin and then when he asked. "do you like him?". It doesn't sound or look like a sibling asking it.

Don't read this kindly if you have not seen episode 4 kindly..........

You're not alone. I get the Luke and Leia misleading kiss from Star Wars episode V from them. They are not biologically related that much has been established if not stated out loud. Even if they don't go that way but still they are doing this intentionally, the hints that Ri-On has more than brotherly feelings for Ri-Jin. He won't ever act on it but they are hinting at that. Lets see where that leads. Plus who here thinks, Miss Husky is an important asset and absolutely adorable. I am loving her, her insights as crazy as they are add layers to this already crazy drama.

I was planning to watch just one episode of this show and leave it there, but it has me hooked and waiting for the next week for another two hours of fun and entertainment!

Do Hyun is the most sensible character and while people might 'like' badass Se Gi more, but he is scary and dangerous and I'm damn sure he is gonna wreak havoc in the show in the next few epis. Perry Park was fun, looking forward to meeting his other personalities which going by the past two weeks are sure to be fun and interesting.

Ri jin screams her lungs out lol I find that funny for the time being but I hope they don't repeat it too much. As to Ri on, I felt his behavior kind of odd. They are twins, yet his reaction was confusing, or, was the acting off?

What a beautifully written recap! You have all the pertinent facts woven into a nicely moving piece. I envy those that do that well. It isn't easy and I appreciate the work/time put in.

I agree that it keeps getting better.

Of course hats off to JS, who not only looks good in a suit, oomph! but can convey so much in little tiny changes in his eyes and mouth. That smile when RJ teases about the bomb and leather jacket, omo omo omo! It means so much so quickly:
"Oh, so you DO know I am several people inside, and you AREN'T angry with me for almost blowing you up as it was totally my fault because Seki was the one who stole the jacket in the first place and somehow I left it with you thus the thugs went after you, kidnapped you and, well, I have to face the fact that you now have in your possession an extremely sensitive piece of information that not that many people know so I am kinda at your mercy and it's a little tricky for you to even talk to me at all but here I am now more exposed to you than I have been to anyone besides Ahn and my doctor..."
Eeek!

HJE has all my respect, again, in this ep. She holds nothing back, doesn't care at all how silly or bad she looks no matter how unflattering the shots are for her most of the time. Her screaming is fine with me, and as long as she is there to protect the Do-hyuns, I am happy!

Since this was not mentioned in the recaps, I wonder about what Ri Jin said when she was unconscious, when she muttered out "I'm sorry...I did wrong". Is she had a bad past experience with fire?

And also her monologue on the bike. It seemed like it resemble what Se Gi said to her. Something like, "Stay here with me..let's play." This kind of make it related to Do Hyun childhood mystery?

im getting the distinct feeling that do hyun met or knew ri jin as a child but its just a hunch so far. its possible also that the warm call do hyun got on christmas was actually not chae yeon. but maybe ri jin? (idk how tho, so take with grain of salt) and se gi was the one to get the call. we've seen how information can get distorted or manipulated when do hyun isnt the one present, so that it could easily have come out that it was chae yeon and she went along with it? who knows. i can def see do hyun retaining the warm feeling he got from the call and attributing it to chae yeon who he's had a crush on for so long. we'll see? either that or childhood connections. its obv se gi knows a bit more about do hyun's past than do hyun will allow HIMSELF to know. hard to say. i'm def intrigued tho!

I have the same feeling, too, that CDH and RJ were childhood friends. At the moment, it seems it's Se Gi who remembers and even referred to her as his first love.

Re the twins, one possibility is that Ri On is the biological child and RJ the adopted, assuming that RJ was a child close to the circles in which CDH moved. Maybe, the twins' parents are connected to CDH's family?

Why Ri On's fixation on CDH and family? Seems his interest is not just for a writing project, I think. There's something there.

Do you mean that she might have caused part of the bad stuff that happened back when they were kids?
I did not think of that, but it could make some sense from her words.

No no, I think maybe both of them were involved in the fire, and also, RJ might be abused too. Since it trigger Do Hyun memories later.

I will put most of my thoughts down in response to other people's comments but I mostly just want to say that this show is so incredibly fun and I hope it stays that way. I also am happy that Ji Sung ended up with this role because he is owning it. I can't picture anyone else doing it now.

Yes!

So far...

as Do Hyun - Refined, self controlled.
as Se Gi - Intense, unpredictable, uncontrollable.
as Perry Park (Ferry Park) - Fun, Funny, Free spirited.

I believe these different characteristics exist in all of us ;-)

i CAN´T WAIT for the others to appear. cmon, cmon!!!! especially teenage girl...oh jesus. I, seriously...

if Do Hyun got along nicely and could change into any of them by will, then they´d make a great team. not necessarily useful, but fun...

I am really like this show when I wasn't expecting to at all. As for Do-hyun vs Se-gi, I've always liked Do-hyun (because really Se-gi's bad boy act, while amusing, isn't really a turn on for me, too typical) and I felt vindicated by the show of mettle he displayed this episode. Bland he is not.

On one hand, I wish they'd let the personality switches breath. Ji-sung is fully capable without the eye colors, tattoos, and the choking and sputtering of one being possessed, but on the other hand, I like the campiness so I'll let it go.

The screams were aggravating at first but in some cases I didn't mind. By the next episode I was sold on her so its a non-issue now.

Thank you for the recap Purplecow.

So far so good...loving it. In it for the long haul without reservation - hook, line, and sinker thanks to Ji Sung, Hwang Jung-Eum, and Park Seo-Joon.

Who knew the comedy, romance, & action in Kill Me, Heal Me would be so entertaining.

I suspect maybe other family members may have or have had a history of battling mental illness such as Grandmother Seo Tae-Im, Cousin Cha Ki-Joon, his father, or either one of the relatives that died in the car accidents as reported in the news articles.

I believe Cha Do Hyun is not the real son of the chaebol family. I think Ri-On/ Omega is the real son so he is obsessed about his past and his impersonator and trying to figure our who tried to kill him in the past and replace him with another.

I am completely loving this show! I had no expectations of it initially but now I can't wait to see what happens every week! Ji Sung looks really nice is all his personas esp as se gi (guy liner ftw)!!! And his chemistry with the resident screaming doc is perfect!!!! You really do feel for cdh its quite a burden to carry but hopefully he will over come it and get the girl and live a sane life.... hope that's not asking for too much

idg people who saw this episode and still think do hyun is boring? i mean he's def the most complex. shin se gi is a pretty bog standard bad boy archetype. thats why ri jin's reaction to him was so funny, she totally thought he was ridiculous like "is this dude forreal???" when he came at her with his rip off gackt persona. i do enjoy shin se gi as a character tho, and no question ji sung rocks that eyeliner. but if all he was, was shin se gi. i'd tire of him quickly. do hyun is interesting cuz he clearly DOES have a little bit of all these personalities inside him present in his real self just pushed down because of his self control and also repression. the suicidal side, the scared child, the angry bad guy, the goofy ahjusshi and apparently also a sassy teen girl. tbf not sure how those last 2 figure into his real self uh hopefully they have a purpose beyond being comic relief.

do hyun is really capable, ethical, kind, courageous, self aware and smart. which is far more attractive than se gi punching ppl who annoy him left and right. (i'm glad also that it seems ri jin is clearly more attracted to do hyun out of the gate than se gi. tho i suspect se gi might also grow on her in time. we shall see.)

also re chae yeon, she def has a thrill seeking character (or as ki joon called her a "fox"). i'm suspecting if she runs into se gi persona (not knowing its another personality entirely. as opposed to do hyun pulling a gackt cosplay lol)
she'll be SUPER into him and fall in love (lust?) with him, esp since se gi will prob act super cold/disinterested in her (which i can see making her want him EVEN MORE). Poor do hyun XD his fave girl will never love the real him. im excited for the hijinks sure to ensue when she sees her crush se gi hitting on ri jin. i hope this drama keeps being awesome!

hmmm. i think fatal attraction in this sense simply means like someone who is overly obsessed/infatuated with someone to the point where it can be crazy/dangerous.

that is compared to when someone truly LOVES someone in a a healthy way.

this is according to the korean description, fatal attraction is however a pretty close translation.

**Preview SPOILER**
It seems like SG threatens DH with hurting CY if his woman is hurt as a payback. So I imagine he's going to make sure CY is within his reach a lot. Hopefully that could start with ep 5 even though I didn't really notice her in the preview.

I think after this week's episodes, Cha Do Hyun's character shines! I feel really sorry for him more... the ending scene plus the way he says 'the misfortune for meeting me' were really good. His attitude to the people affected by his alter egos was really touching.

So, yes, Se Gi is interesting, but Do Hyun is that guy who's earnest and heartfelt... I can't wait to see Do Hyun's who's all his personalities in one.

I thought this was going to be ridiculous drama that won't make any sense but it has heart and I think I'll enjoy this show until it decides to go off rails.

I'm so happy because after a strong start to 2014 I found myself struggling to get through most of the year until the end. In other words the last few months the end of 2014 and beginning of 2015 have been strong, let's hope it doesn't lose steam in the middle again.

I, and I'm sure other fans of Secret know that the chemistry between Hwang Jung-eum and Ji Sung can be sizzling, perhaps that's where the attraction to Shin Se-gi comes from. We also know that Hwang Jung-eum doesn't have to be so, screechy I hope it gets turned down some more as the drama rolls along.

So they have been saying megalomaniac, I was hoping that was a mistranslation. Do Koreans not know what a megalomaniac is? I do and my reaction when someone tells me someone is a megalomaniac is ok, so what.

Drama please, please make at least one of Do-hyun's personalities female. Preferably either an ajumma or a teenage sasaeng. It would bring me so much pleasure and joy come on you can do it. Sure it might not be realistic but you're a drama, since when have you cared about realism?

There are supposed to be at least two female personas. The suicidal teenager Yo Sub's twin Yo something or other and a little girl.

Yup. This was the descriptions of his personalities:

Shin Se-gi (a bad guy and playboy), Perry Park (40 years-old man), Ahn Yo-sub (suicidal teenage boy), Ahn Yo-na (an extrovert and sassy teen girl), Nana (7 years-old girl), and Mysterious X (a mysterious guy).

So we still have Yo Sub, Yo Na, and Mr X to look forward to. We learned of Nana's existence but haven't met with her yet either.

As interesting (and physically attractive) as Shin Se Gi is I was waiting to learn more about Do Hyun who seemed weak, scared, ineffectual ın the first couple of episodes. After week two I’m in for him. I sympathize with him exactly as Ri Jin does and feel sorry for how lonely he must be. Poor guy had to learn to escape from dangerous and lıfe threatening situations, stitch himself up when necessary, hide all these from the people around him and apologize for all the troubles his other personalities created for the last 10 years. The expression on his face while he was apologizing to Ri Jin at the hospital killed me. What kind of life is that? He has an internal enemy who is trying to kill him!

I felt really sorry for him when he had to turn down the woman he loves to protect her (even though she is so far from deserving that love) and asking Ri Jin isn’t she afraid of him, knowing the truth? This poor guy resigned himself to the fact that he will livea lonely life. Thank God he has Secretary Ahn. I don’t know what a Chaebol hero in a Kdrama would do without his secretary.

Epizode 3 showed us that Do Hyun isn’t the ineffectual weakling he seemed to be. He was resourceful and decisive in action and I was pleased that it was him and not Se Gi who saved Ri Jin in the end. He is lot stronger than I initially gave him credit for.

I am also glad that we will see him in suits rather than his earlier unnecessarily dorky clothes. He is a genuinely nice but definitely not boring guy with a lot of very serious problems.

Huh, just had a thought. Se gi had implied that they've met when they were little, so do you think that NaNa, Dohyun's personality of a 7 year old girl is actually Dohyun's memory of Ji Rin? 'Cause that would be a twist.

And I do think we have to pay attention to what Miss Husky says in the few seconds she appears, she could be giving us clues.

I do think like that too! Especially Nana is suddenly appeared after he met Ri Jin with all those bombing scene (with fire and whatnot), it might be a trigger. And I think I saw girl's toys too in his dream. Maybe it was a manifestation of Ri Jin that he witnessed--and might be with the abusing happened too.

What I like about this drama is that it gives us almost all genres (action, comedy, drama, romance, psychological) without making us bored with the transition of scenes and instead, it makes us crave for more.

The actors HJE and JS are superb! They could act so well in comedy and drama that even if they only stare at each other, you could feel the electrifying chemistry between them..yay!

Now, I'm off to watch Episode 4 :)
