Hyde, Jekyll, Me: Episode 1

SBS’s new Wednesday-Thursday series Hyde, Jekyll, Me got off to a good start today, with solid character introductions, a mystery, and a touch of whimsy. As expected, it’s the Hyun Bin Show, but he doesn’t disappoint, managing to be funny, grumpy, assy, and swoony all in one episode.

I’m pretty happy with this drama’s presentation of the split-personality premise because it’s rooted in an interesting lead character, and more importantly because it flip-flops the Hyde-Jekyll expectations that the dormant personality is the monster inside. This drama asks, What if the Hyde that Jekyll wants to keep desperately hidden is in fact every nice, wonderful, amazing thing about him?

EPISODE 1 RECAP

An overhead shot takes us through Wonderland, an amusement park where children laugh and play, with every corner decorated in colorful lights. A child runs with a red heart balloon in hand and runs smack dab into a stone-faced man, who coldly knocks the balloon out of his face and sends it flying up into the rafters.

The child cries, while the man watches the balloon and suddenly notices the giant mirror ball fixture overhead begin to shake. He looks down in alarm to see a woman walking right into its path, and at the last second, he grabs her out of the way and they go sliding on the ice rink below, as the giant mirror ball crashes behind them.

He wakes up with a start. It was a dream… or was it?

This is our hero, GU SEO-JIN (Hyun Bin), who looks rattled as he sits up in bed and scrambles for his glasses. They’re super hi-tech glasses that give him a digital reading of his pulse, along with other biometrics. His rapid heartbeat seems to freak him out more than the dream itself.

He gets out of bed (omg, what are those crazy pants, and why do you look better in them than I would?) and walks through his palatial house to go meditate in his greenhouse garden. He chants, he breathes, he clutches the necklace he’s wearing (which appears to be in the shape of the Big Dipper), but he doesn’t seem satisfied with how fast his heart is still beating. Something tells me stressing about meditation is not an effective strategy, but what do I know.

Seo-jin’s secretary rushes to find him while chatting on the phone with Seo-jin’s doctor. Clearly other people are hooked up to his biometric alerts as well, because Chief Secretary Kwon approaches with trepidation to ask if he’s okay.

Seo-jin remains calm as he finishes his morning yoga, gets Secretary Kwon to confirm that his heart rate is back to normal, and then yanks his monitor off. After showering (thanks for wasting no time with the requisite army abs!), he’s quick to put the monitor back on, and worries that it’s the first time in five years that his numbers have been this high.

Secretary Kwon says that as long as they stay under 150, they’re safe. But Seo-jin says he did go over 150… in his dream. He looks into the mirror and adds, “It wasn’t me.”

His chauffeur arrives, so Secretary Kwon whispers as they head out, wondering if he saw Robin in his dream. Seo-jin snaps, “Don’t talk about that bastard.”

At the airport, a woman arrives and spends her time on the moving walkway showing a little girl a magic trick. This is our heroine JANG HANA (Han Ji-min), and she lights up when she passes by a sign advertising Wonderland.

It turns out that Seo-jin is the boss at the theme park, and he makes his morning rounds with a team of security guards scurrying behind him. He stops in his tracks at the sight of a stray balloon flying towards him, reminiscent of his bad dream. He catches it and refuses to give it back to the little girl, making her erupt in tears.

He barks at Secretary Kwon that balloons are banned for the day, and bans everything even remotely balloonish—the inflatable dancing clown, the spinny hot air balloon ride—with no concern for lost revenue.

A group of children holding the red heart balloons grabs his attention, and Seo-jin smirks at the man who’s with them. This is some sort of publicity stunt for Wonder Group, the chaebol conglomerate that owns the theme park, and Seo-jin faces off with the man, speaking to him in banmal.

His name is RYU SEUNG-YEON (Han Sang-jin), and all we know for now is that his managing director title is equal to Seo-jin’s, and they dislike each other immensely. Seo-jin asks if he got a permit for this event, and kicks them out of the park, confiscating all the balloons.

Seung-yeon gapes, “You banned balloons? At an amusement park?” Seo-jin just snipes back that this is HIS amusement park, and the balloons give him a bad feeling. Seo-jin calls this stunt ridiculous and says he feels bad for the children who are being used, and notes sarcastically, “You know I have a weak heart.” Hur.

When they leave, Seo-jin decides to invite ten thousand children to the park for charity. Secretary Kwon guesses exactly what his intent is—to show up Seung-yeon in their never-ending pissing contest.

As the tram takes Seung-yeon away, one stray red balloon flies up into the sky. Uh-oh, it’s the bad omen that Seo-jin was dreading. And on cue, someone starts screaming in the distance.

Seo-jin whips around and his eyes widen to see the crowd behind him part… as a giant gorilla (seriously?) stomps down the main causeway. Everyone runs screaming, and a woman runs up to Seo-jin to grab his arm and scream her head off for him to do something.

But he just stands frozen in place. He’s so terrified that he can’t move, and looks over at the woman like she’s crazy. He tries to pry her off his arm, and when she won’t let go, he bites down on HER arm to wriggle free.

HA—and then he pushes her to the ground right in King Kong’s path, giving him time to run away like a coward. His security team surrounds him while he scrambles up to the roof of a street stall, and Secretary Kwon hurries up there to give him headphones.

Seo-jin races against his racing heart to put the headphones on and meditate, and it’s pretty hilarious to watch King Kong run around and scare people while the mediation track plays.

Hana is stuck in traffic just a block away from Wonderland, and she perks up to hear the park mentioned in a radio broadcast. At the same time, Seung-yeon gets a call from one of the workers at the park, who reports with a satisfied smirk that Seo-jin is seconds away from passing out.

Seo-jin manages to get his heart rate down and braces himself to face King Kong. Now that he’s calmed down, he asks for the walkie-talkie and makes sure that the security and animal control teams are on the way.

They arrive looking pretty scared, and one guy fires a tranquilizer dart with perfect precision… only it bounces right off of King Kong’s chest. Um, what? That just pisses off the gorilla, and he starts charging right at Seo-jin.

Suddenly a voice calls out, “Bing Bing!” The gorilla skids to a halt and the crowd parts to reveal Hana, waving and calling for Bing Bing like they’re friends. The gorilla turns around and starts running at full speed for Hana, and Seo-jin notices that his heart rate suddenly shoots up into the danger zone.

He asks what’s happening, and starts convulsing and choking. The gorilla goes for Hana and takes a flying leap right at her, and Seo-jin’s heart rate spikes, nearly at 150.

But then he hears laughter, and looks up to see the gorilla dancing in circles around Hana, who’s smiling and dancing too. Immediately Seo-jin’s pulse slows, and he wonders what is going on with him.

He goes to his office and yanks his heart rate monitor off and tells Secretary Kwon to have it fixed, because it must be broken. When he says he neared 150 just now, Secretary Kwon takes a step back and asks suspiciously, “Robin?”

Seo-jin snarls and tells him not to overreact, but Secretary Kwon sneaks a taser out of his pocket and asks what they had for lunch yesterday. Seo-jin rolls his eyes but says they had bibimbap, and Secretary Kwon lunges with the taser, only to be reminded that he’s the one who’s misremembering.

It’s extra amusing because Secretary Kwon speaks to Robin in banmal, and hurriedly switches back to jondae the second he realizes his mistake.

Secretary Kwon guesses that Seo-jin’s heart rate spiked because he was scared, but Seo-jin says that’s the confusing part—he only went up to the 130s when he was in immediate danger, but it wasn’t until the gorilla was lunging at the mystery woman that he went up 148. He decides that this is about her, and asks for her to be brought to him.

Outside, a reporter interviews Hana about the gorilla scare, and introduces her as the daughter of the late circus troupe leader of one of the country’s last few remaining circuses. She asks the reporter to please include the fact that Wonderland failed to reconstruct the cages after multiple requests from the circus to do so.

Secretary Kwon arrives to interrupt and take her to see Seo-jin, and since she’s just arrived, she has to be informed that he’s the boss. Seo-jin straps his monitor back on just as Hana arrives in his office, and she introduces herself as the new Wonder Circus leader.

He just stares at her without a word, and then all of a sudden yanks her close. Really close, like kissing distance, without so much as a word of explanation. She squirms and asks what the hell he’s doing, but he just holds on and looks right into her eyes.

What he’s really looking at is his heart rate, of course, and smirks that lopsided grin of his, satisfied that it must’ve been a fluke. She’s not making his heart race anymore, and he just rattles off his current physical state aloud to himself, as if she’s not even there.

Hana grows increasingly agitated, especially when he just dismisses her. She wants to talk about the gorilla, which he sort of remembers as an afterthought and just cuts her off with, “The circus is fired.”

She argues that he can’t fire them when they have a contract, but he counters that the circus brings in no money anyway, so paying them the fee to break contract is better business in the long run.

But Hana refuses to be kicked out so easily, and tells Seo-jin that the Wonder Circus is part of this park’s history—it was there at the start in 1975, and her father played a big part in making Wonderland what it is today.

She demands that he take back everything he said about the circus sucking, and it’s infuriating the way he takes it all back just like she asked, but with zero sincerity behind his words. Hana says that she came from Cirque du Soleil and has all sorts of plans to update the circus act and make it better, and Seo-jin encourages her to do just that… anywhere but here.

Hana asks how a person can just decide something so monumental at the drop of a hat, and Seo-jin says matter-of-factly that he’s someone who can. She leaves his office fuming mad. Secretary Kwon brings back the first heart rate monitor and reports that nothing’s wrong with it, and Seo-jin is left wondering if maybe it was just the gorilla after all.

Hana trudges back to the circus with her shoulders slumped and overhears her troupe members worrying about whether they’ll be out on the street. The eldest of them sighs that his kid’s got some new tutoring thing to pay for, and another of them says that if Seo-jin fires them, she’ll get her revenge by releasing that super embarrassing video of him during the gorilla incident.

That gives Hana an idea and she asks for the video. Moments later Seo-jin is watching said video with a look of horror on his face. It’s him pushing a woman into the gorilla’s path like a giant wimp, and he stammers, “I-I didn’t know it was this bad… that I looked this… pathetic.”

He looks near tears as he trembles and watches the video on repeat, and Hana goes from smug to sorry pretty quickly. She says that she didn’t want to go this far, and that it’s a natural reaction to have when you’re afraid. All she wants is a new contract and the video will disappear, and Seo-jin calls for a new contract to be drafted immediately.

He asks her for a moment alone, still looking distraught, and she tries to pry the phone out of his hands. But he’s just so upset and fixated on the thing that she decides to tiptoe out and gives him a moment.

Secretary Kwon shows her the new contract that he’ll bring over soon, and Hana returns to her troupe with the good news. They’re all skeptical though, because they’ve dealt with Seo-jin directly for a while now, and he’s not exactly the type to cave so easily. The cutie pie maknae (named Eun-chang) argues that Seo-jin is a sociopath who doesn’t have an ounce of sympathy or compassion.

The unni who took the video sits down with Hana to discuss Seo-jin, not having gathered much about him other than the roundness of his ass. Lol. Hana found him to be surprisingly remorseful for being such a jerk, while the unni says that’s the appealing thing about bad boys—to the right girl, they become the nicest guy in the world. Hana scoffs that that’s ridiculous.

In Seo-jin’s office, Secretary Kwon gets another dressing down for missing the fact that it was all an act, and he has no plans to sign a new contract. Seo-jin just wanted to keep the phone so he could erase the video, and Secretary Kwon cringes as he watches it, sighing in relief that it isn’t all over the internet.

Seo-jin asks defensively why it would matter. He counters that this isn’t about chivalry—it’s because it’s a woman that he had to bite her to get her off his arm. He asks Secretary Kwon if he’s forgotten why it is that he lives like a zombie (“with a body like this!”), and reminds him of the rules: No women, no skinship, no arousal, no lust, otherwise his heartbeat goes out of control.

OH. Oh, you mean you can’t… get excited. Suddenly finding it in my heart to feel sympathy for you. Seo-jin finally says the thing he hasn’t been saying outright: When his heart rate goes above 150, “that bastard Robin appears.”

Secretary Kwon’s reaction tells us that this would be a terrifying development. He cries that that can’t happen, especially after all the effort Seo-jin has been putting into maintaining control, practically living like a saint.

Seo-jin slams his fist into the table, “LIKE a saint?! You mean totally, completely a saint!” He’s not talking about good deeds either, and sighs that he’s a man too. Poor, frustrated buddy.

Hana shares all her ideas with the troupe about revamping the circus act to be a big musical performance stage, and they’re all eager to get started, grateful that she’s come back at a time when they really need her. But they hear commotion in their theater and find people tearing it apart, with the order to vacate. The phone gets returned to them sans embarrassing video, and Hana realizes that she’s been played. Behind her, the maknae Eun-chang mutters that Seo-jin is two-faced.

Of course they have no idea how close to the truth that is, and we cut to Dr. KANG HEE-AE (Shin Eun-jung) giving a lecture on split personalities with an example from Primal Fear and the real-life case of Billy Milligan. Dr. Kang explains how early trauma can lead to the creation of alternate personas in the mind, leading to dissociative identity disorder, where it’s possible for one personality to have no memory of the others’ actions, even in the same body.

After the lecture, Dr. Kang checks her voicemail and is alarmed to hear an emergency message from Seo-jin. He finally relaxes when she calls him back, and she tells him to listen up because she has good news: She’s found a treatment method that’s safe for him. He asks if it could be dangerous like the time they tried five years ago, but she assures him that it’ll be different: “You’ll be free, Gu Seo-jin.” He lights up, genuinely moved, and rushes off to go see her in person.

Hana shows up just in time to try and stand in his way when he’s in a big hurry to see Dr. Kang, so Seo-jin tells her to get in and then tells his driver to take off without her. That just makes her more determined to ruin his day though, and she follows him in a taxi.

Dr. Kang records her notes on Seo-jin’s case, which conveniently gives us the exposition we need. He’s a patient with dissociative identity disorder, with an alternate personality named Robin. Robin first appeared 15 years ago, and she says that while most patients have a violent Hyde to their rational Jekyll, Gu Seo-jin and Robin are the opposite of that.

A mysterious visitor in a long black coat visits Dr. Kang unannounced, and when he enters her office, she quickly closes Seo-jin’s case file. We never get to see Long Black Coat’s face.

Hana follows Seo-jin all the way to the hospital, where he just waves his chauffeur at her to keep her away from him. She challenges him that this isn’t his land and she can step foot wherever she wants, but the driver points out that actually, Seo-jin owns the hospital too.

It’s clearly a big deal that Dr. Kang has found a treatment method that she’s sure will work this time, but Seo-jin douses his face with water in the bathroom and tells himself not to get his hopes up again.

He walks down the corridor towards Dr. Kang’s office, when a crazy sight catches his eye: It’s Hana, crossing from one building to the other in midair on a zip line. This is your way of not setting foot on the grounds? Appropriately, he calls her crazy.

She climbs her way into an open window with an apology for the intrusion… but when she looks around, she finds Dr. Kang dead (or just unconscious?) and bleeding on the ground, surrounded by broken glass. Eep.

Worse yet, her attacker is still in the room. Ack, ruuuun! That’s exactly what Hana does, and Seo-jin rounds the corner to see her running for her life from a masked man in black (and it appears that this is a different man in black, not Long Black Coat).

Seo-jin immediately turns and runs and reaches the elevator just ahead. His heart rate rises dangerously high as he looks back out to Hana, but even when she reaches the elevator before the doors close, he purposely pushes her out. Dang.

He’s struggling to breathe and clutching his heart the whole time, but even when he’s out of immediate danger, his heart rate only goes higher when the attacker goes after her. Just like the gorilla moment.

The elevator doors close, and soon Seo-jin is overtaken by his pounding heart. He falls to his knees and clutches at his throat in pain, gasping for air. His last thought is, “No!” as his head falls limp.

The hitman takes Hana to the rooftop ledge, where he holds her over the edge, choking her. Her last thought: “Save me, somebody…”

Back in the elevator, Seo-jin’s fingers twitch and he suddenly stands up tall. He ditches the jacket, the tie, the heart monitor, and the glasses. The camera slowly pans up from his feet, revealing a totally different man—this is Robin, who notably wears his collar open, showing the Big Dipper necklace that Seo-jin otherwise keeps hidden under his clothes.

He walks down the hall and looks out the window to see Hana being strangled out on the ledge, and runs to her. Though he manages to pull the hitman away with a swift move, it also sends Hana flying off the ledge.

She falls in slow motion, and he takes off in a big hero run. Suddenly so very hot.

I’m fully expecting him to catch her, but she’s already too far out of reach, and he doesn’t hesitate a beat, launching himself over the edge after her. It almost looks like they’re flying, and they fall slowly enough for me to wonder if he’s crazy.

He grabs her into an embrace midair, and they land with a splash, ohthankgoodness, into the lake below. He cradles her gently in his arms, and Hana opens her eyes and looks up to see him before passing out.

She wakes up in the hospital some hours later, with her circus members fretting overhead. She’s fine but doesn’t remember how she got here, and slowly recalls the hazy memory of coming here and discovering Dr. Kang’s body.

Her friends ask how she got into the lake, and she’s surprised to find out that it wasn’t a dream.

Seo-jin shakes in his hospital bed, as Secretary Kwon nervously tells him it’s been six hours since he left for the hospital. His last memory is of the elevator doors closing after he pushes Hana away, and his heart rate reaching 150. After that, he has no idea what happened, and that thought terrifies him.

He gnaws on his finger and asks, “Could it be… Robin?” Secretary Kwon jumps to say that nothing’s been confirmed yet, but then Hana enters the room and looks at him curiously. She asks carefully, “Was it… you? Did you really jump into the water and save me?” His eyes grow wide with fear.

As we see Robin open his eyes underwater and hold Hana close, we rewind to the rest of Dr. Kang’s notes, where she describes Robin as a personality born out of Seo-jin’s guilt. She says a phrase that can be taken two ways: That Robin saves and protects others, or that her intention is to save and protect Robin when she cures Seo-jin.

Back in the present, Seo-jin asks in disbelief, “I… saved you?” He looks over to his reflection in the window and thinks to himself, “Robin has appeared.”

The closing caption asks, Have you ever come face to face with another you?

COMMENTS

Pwahaha, okay, that gorilla was ridonkulous. Unintentional CG hilarity aside, I actually really liked everything else about this first episode, which is a nice surprise given that the premise made me really wary. But the setup is rooted in a believable character—Gu Seo-jin—who makes it abundantly clear that he’s spent most of his life in a desperate attempt to control everything because his worst fear is losing control of his own body. The yoga, the heart monitoring, the insistence on his rules—everything about his control-freaky nature is driven quite believably by his condition, and though he appears to be your standard-issue assy chaebol type, there’s a nice complexity to the character that makes me sympathetic, even if I think he’s being a rude and selfish prick most of the time.

But turning the Jekyll-Hyde setup on its head is a great twist from the start, because it makes us want to meet Robin and draw him out. It’s basically taking the general metaphor of a cold Darcy hero who hides his mushy marshmallow heart behind walls to a fantasy-driven extreme, where instead of a walled-up heart he’s actually created a second personality to lock away completely. And I totally buy that when you do that in an effort to protect yourself, the other personality finds a way of coming out. I’m pleased that the explanation for his condition doesn’t make my mind jump through too many logic hoops, and that it sets us up for a potentially heart-tugging romance with an alter-ego who seems (so far) to be pretty awesome.

It’s funny that the mean one is so terrified of the nice one coming forth, but that sets us firmly on the rom-com side of things, which I like. The tone is a happy medium—not too broad, not too serious—and the slick production value sure does make it easy on the eyes. Or was that just Hyun Bin and Han Ji-min? A strong case could be made for them looking this sparkly on any camera, but it’s always nice when the show is as pretty. They were pretty cursory about many of the introductions in this episode with a lot of lazy exposition, so I’m looking forward to more character interaction that doesn’t need to go through as much obvious setup dialogue. I already like the leads together, and Wimpy Seo-jin makes me laugh out loud (the gorilla WAS good for that one thing).

The most clever device is the heart rate monitor, which is reminiscent of Best Love and Dokko Jin’s obtuse inability to connect heart to love. Here it serves as a constant gauge for Seo-jin’s control over his own body, because we get a clear trigger for Robin: cross the magic heart rate threshold and he appears. So it makes sense that Seo-jin runs from the first sign of fear or stress, but the poor guy also deprives himself of any pleasure, excitement, or joy in life, essentially keeping both personalities locked away from the world. But of course Hana is the anomaly, otherwise we’d never have a story. What is their connection, and why does seeing her in danger raise his heart rate into the danger zone? Does he subconsciously remember her somehow? And is Robin just a hero, or is he saving Hana because it’s her? I see a lot of potential, and I’d say curious about two Hyun Bins is a good place to be for a start.

Despite the bad reactions from Netizens and those who watch "KMHM", I actually enjoy this drama. There were alot of fun and hilarious moments. I didn't find any parts boring and I am looking forward to episode 2.

Listen, Its just the first episode and Its binnie, so it will come around. The first episode was a bit slow at parts but I enjoyed it thoroughly. About KMHM, Ji Sung is such a versatile actor, he has set a ridiculously high standard for acting by acing all his part in the show. I personally as an international viewer get to enjoy both without having to chose one over the other. Well, that's my personal views anyway. I hope both the shows can do well despite the comparisons and same time-slot and all.

I enjoy Ji Sung but I can't stand Hwang Jung Min at all. Her face and voice annoy me. Her face looks like there is too much botox/ps going on that it's distracting. I don't hate her but I just cant watch anything she is in. She was the main reason why I dropped out of "Secret". I couldn't even go past the first episode.

I actually think the story here more convincing than KMHM. Been trying to follow up some episode in KMHM but it is so exaggerated(funny didn't do the tricks on me) and I didn't really find Ji Sung pitiful. Hwang Jung Min's voice...is so loud until my hand need to be always standby to tone down the volume when watching.

@wonderlandgirl
Ji Sung, pitiful, he plays lot more than just that, I am guessing you didn't go past episode 1?? Well, I guess we won't like the same thing. I'm enjoying both shows for now.

Her name is Hwang Jung EUM, at least get that much right.

I for one like everything about KMHM - the zany, the serious, the creepy, the mysterious, all except corporate logic, dramas could do without that. I walso enjoy the character setup, how he was hurt so bad that he indeed crumbled into little pieces and bytes of memory of himself. The main character is not a typical cold chaebol Hyun Bin is playing, but a nice and kind guy. even though he is slowly gaining back other bits from Se Gi and others, and becoming more diverse, more balanced, but also....more unpredictable. cause human mind is not simple and nice, it is complex.

I for one really enjoy all elements in KMHM, keep watching. The campy feel reminds me of my childhood movies, which were fantastical, yes, but they were icons. Think Tim Burtons´Batman, Pee Wee, or think Back to the future. this kind of feel, seriousness veiled in zany. if you can see how much heart is inside the crazy, then you´ll enjoy.

also, I feel like Hyun Bins´job seems a bit easier. Ji Sung is doing a damn great job in switching from one character to another - even inside one take - but still staying IN that specific character throughout the episodes.

actually dont skip the office too. they might drop a useful piece of information.

I want to see Hyde and Jekyll too, but I was too tired yesterday.

You said KMHM is exaggerated but this ridiculous gorilla scene is not? And the fact that the male lead (who's the boss of that park) just shoved a woman at the animal and bears no consequences of his irresponsibility is totally convincing? lmao

0

I came home after a long day. Began to watch KMHM ep 5 to unwind. Hwang Jung Eum kept shutting for the first 10 mins or so, and then sporadically thru out. It gave me such a headache that I stopped half way thru.

Why would the director think it's a good idea to have her Shut and Scream? So hard on the nerves. Her char is a psychiatrist. Can she be so high strung? Isn't that BAD for her patients?

0

it is called reflection - responding how you think the "patint" expects. I have no problem w it, I find it superfunny
monty python is as absurd butyou can´t say unintelligent

0

The characters of Hwang Min Jung is bipolar she sream to express the emotions in the second episode when Se Gi undressed the coworkers use the her scream to see her emotional state, she herself is not the innocent and weak lead girl like you see everytime cause herserlf have her own demon from her past.
The story of KMHM is more deeper than it's looked everyone have her own scares in this shows. If you only look at the surface you can't get it.
In Jekkyl it's seem to be a bit weak cause the Jekkyl come when the lady is in danger but the reason of why he had th trouble personnality and the mood of the show is lighter and the title don't match the characters cause robin is good not bad so we can't even find why the change or the real story of Jekkyl is someone good who goes bad but here we have someone who is not really bad but got really good when he change so it's doesn't makes senses for me

0

I share the exact sentiment with you:) I just can't watch any of her show, especially after watching her on variety shows!

Even as a Binnie fan, I've to say that right out the gate, this show doesn't compare favourably to KMHM. That doesn't mean it compares unfavourably, just that it doesn't have any obvious competitive advantage from day 1, aside from HB.

It is at a disadvantage to be 4 eps behind KMHM in the same time slot. Don't know why they plan it this way. 4 eps is a good head start, allowing audience to know and care about KMHM's various chars and personalities.

Ji Sung is a wonderful actor. HB is not any less of an actor. But HB's cold control freak chaebol is such an old hat. That he'd actually push women (2) into mortal danger really makes it difficult for his Gu char to score pts w us viewers.

To me, HB's look has changed a lot from his pre-MS days. He has lost that cute, mischievous young man look, and has acquired an ajhussi, mature man vibe. Not that there is anything wrong w it. It seems that he has graduated into another category, to join older actors like Jang Hyuk, Kwan Sang Woo, etc. He is only 30, 31!

@redfox,
Wow, why so nasty?
4 words + a Smily Face is "nag"?
I honestly don't know what you wrote in your reply. But never mind.

0

sorry, I dont find myself nasty, how am I supposed to write then. maybe I misunderstood. yeah, the text is so and so, sorry.

I meant that the main character of Ji Sung grows more layers all the time, he kind of adopts some of other characters´ identity the more they are connected through something - like Ri Jin. He becomes more of a person gradually.
and the humor helps deliver the serious message with more power. However it is sometimes an absurd humor that is not easy to grasp. It takes intelligence and an open mind. Like Monty Python humor or something.

did I make it a little bit more clear this time, I am sort of tired and just had a flood at my house so I still don´t know what I am writing.

I think binnie looks better post military....but i'm not 100% sold on his drama right now...still i'll give it 4 episodes to grow on me :)

To be honest I really struggled to get up the excitement for this show because I am so in love with KMHM right now that I figured I would marathon this show after KMHM ... i might still do that. I know girlfriday likes the tone atm, but you just can't beat Perry Park scenes and that saturi accent in KMHM... to be fair it always takes me a little longer to get into Hyun Bin dramas, but I never regret it ... I guess I just prefere the barmy comedy and frequent laughs mixed in with the serious and the romantic tension. On mental health dramas, at the moment I am 1. KMHM 2. H2H (just beacuse of ep 4) 3.H,J,M

I was curious about this drama because the similarities with KMHM, however when watching the first episode I got bored :/, the king kong scene made me scratch my head quite a bit.
I can't help comparing this first episode with KMHM first episode which got me hooked immediately, the second just made the show addictive with all the different personalities portrayed (Perry Park and his weird accent LMAO), Shin Se Gi and his extreme intensity, and poor Cha Do H. With his pained and complicated existence ( He's a dear ?).

All that said, I'm planning on giving this show an try.

I like both KMHM and HJM, and although they're both a story about a man with D.I.D, I think the dramas won't be too similar.

I started to think that these dramas could be quite different when I read that the original peronality in this drama was the mean guy. In Kill Me, Heal Me, Se Gi is kind of mysterious. He knows more than Do Hyun and the viewer can't be sure of what he's capable of.

In this drama, the mean guy won't do things that can ruin his reputation, which I can't say about Se Gi and Do Hyun's other alters.

So I think that KMHM will be more about the lead getting rid of his other personalities, to be "healed" (maybe learn some things from them first), while HJM will be more about Seo Jin becoming a better person because of love and his other personality.

A lot of the time, actors are chosen to play a character that seems similar to their previous, or most popular character; because the director/makers saw their previous work and thought, the actor played that character extremely well, they'll play theirs just as good, cause they're so alike. It happens to a lot of starting actors everywhere. It's better to try not to compare them, because personally I do see the differences in how HB acts and expresses these characters better and I think it'll be seen more, the deeper we get into the actual story.

Well, DID is this year's trend. They travel inside human minds. Past travels are old fashion.
But the shows are so distinct in tone and in composition. I can enjoy them both, but I rather they chose someone else for the leading lady in KMHM. She was good in serious tone, but she thinks overreacting is comic, but for me is a huge turn off. I think the pair in HJM is much more viable and pleasant.

Hyun Bin, yes! Han Ji Min, eh. I've never been wowed by her acting, and she's a bit lackluster here too. And overall the pilot was okay. I know it's only been one episode, so I'll give it a couple more. I love the guys (Hyun Bin and Sung Joon), but can not stand Hyeri, so I hope her role will be small here.

I personally think Han Ji min is better as a femme fatale than as a run-of-the-mill cute spunky nice girl/doormat that she usually plays. Detective K: Secret of Virtuous Widow and I suspect Fatal Encounter/The King's Wrath are examples. Not that femme fatales aren't just as common, but she fades out less in those roles surprisingly.

Thanks for the fast recap girlfriday!

I'm a big fan of KMHM, but quite frankly I was really looking forward to this drama as well. Why choose sides and fight over which one is better when we could possibly have 4 great hours of both Hyun Bin and Ji Sung in one week? I feel like I'm being spoiled.

I thought this first episode actually did a great job of introducing characters and the main setup without being too complicated and hard to follow. I think Hyun Bin and Han Ji Min have great chemistry together (but this will probably differ for others depending on how much you like the actors). I can't wait for the next episode!

P.S. Did anyone else feel like Robin's first appearance was like something out of a superhero movie? In a good way of course. Man is he smoking hot or what.

I'm all for enjoying both shows!!

I think it's easy to fall for the alternate personalities because they have limited time and clearly both live it to the fullest. But the main personality is the one who has to deal with the realities of the situation and the mundane aspects of life so they can be a little less intriguing.

0

Required fields are marked *

It was an exposition episode (so much PPL!) but I'm still reassured to see some depth underneath and a real potential for a compelling rom-com. I think the show will get more interesting as Robin awakes and we start exploring Goo Seo Jin's subconscious.

So far, I like the interactions bewteen Han Ji Min and Hyun Bin. The chemistry is one of the selling point in a rom-com and it works. Han Ji Min isn't the best actress out of there, but she has a natural charm and charisma that makes it work. Seriously, SHE'S SO PRETTY!

I'll tune E02 hoping to see a little more meat now that they laid down the foundations.

I think I have D.I.D..

Why do these drama come almost always in three or four.. come on be more creative and give us something different instead of following the trend...

Out of these three dramas kill me , Heal me is the best one so far..

I saw Hyde Jekyll me today and I must say I was not impressed .. The scene with King Kong was just ridicules in a very unfunny way.. Overall the execution/directing of the first ep was really bad in my opinion...

Is it just me or Hyun Bin is playing the same character as he did in Secret Garden ( I love that drama)..
So far the only strong point for this drama has been the appeal of it's main characters.. The story so far has been ahhh

For now I will stick with my first personality ( Kill me, Heal me) and if the other personality (Hyde Jekyll me) suddenly took over me then it is out of my control.. ahahh

Ps.. Some webtoon writer has already accuse them of Plagiarizing his Ideas..

All the characters of binnie have some common points they are rich, selfish, egomaniac and they are a kind of crazy and foolish. Look carefully from My lovely Sam Soon to Hyde Jekkyl and Me, the reason of the success some of them is the screenwriter and the storyline. It's ot he is bad actor it's just he always picking the same keep of play. He should change a bit the gender of the characters he playing.

Please see Ireland, Snow Queen, Worlds Within, Friend Our Legend and nearly all of his films for non-crazy/egomaniacal, etc characters. He's done lots.

I don't think first episode ratings mean much in terms of quality since the viewers don't know what the writing or tone is like for the first episode. However seeing viewership increases or decreases over the next few episodes will matter a lot more.

@Samui
The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was written by Robert Louis Stevenson. The webtoon writer is not the first person to have used the theme to write about DID, it is not very original idea to begin with to go around accusing people of plagiarism. It looks especially bad because the whole world knew about both the dramas for months and he chose to react in such a wrong tone only now even badmouthing Ji Sung in the process for doing his job. It will do no good for him or Binnie's show. SBS really needs to sort this shit before it is too late.

Hyun Bin is still the most delicious of eye treats. How in the world is it possible that he doesn't look to have aged at all in the five years since SG?

I'm glad I don't have to choose between watching KMHM, and JH&M, because I'm loving every minute of the former, aided also by an equally muscular appreciation of the aesthetics of Ji Sung. Both HB and JS are gifted actors, and both dramas intrigue. I have no complaints.

This episode requires all suspension of disbelief. The escaped gorilla: Instead of running for their lives, park patrons including children gathered around the gorilla to watch it, and the circus troupe made no real effort to save the unconscious woman. The killer: Not one person in the hospital heard Hana's screams and attempted to save her. Was the entire floor empty?

I really like it despite of some negative feedbacks. Since the first moment of this ep, i was like "WTF is this....LOL", i couldn't stop laughing during that gorilla scene. It's ridiculous, but in a good way because somehow it helps to portray Seo Jin's character. Also i love how this ep is going at a steady pace with no filler scenes, giving us full looks of these characters.
The only thing i don't feel about this episode is Han Ji Min & Hyun Bin's chemistry. Even when he hugged her in the pool, i just don't feel it, it seemed forced to me. But this drama is based on a popular webtoon and the storyline is very interesting, so i believe it will definitely get better.

However, compare to Kill Me, Heal Me, where the personalities is are more interesting it does makes my expectation towards H,J,M higher. Ji Sung really set the bar high for Kill Me Heal Me where the character dynamic are faster compare to Hyun Bin character.

Not to bashed one show but I am still waiting for Hyde, Jekyll and Me to bring things up. The setup is okay but the circus part may really bring the thing slower than its original rhythm. And writer really have to play with it's setup of romantic comedy, because so far the comedy element is the GORILLA!! Ji Min character have way more to explore than the typical candy and heroine.

I don't think that's possible since our heroine ran from the killer and straight towards Hyun Bin.

I actually think it's a more interesting question to ask why the personalities are a bad thing to have when the personalities themselves are good. The viewers are obviously not going to like his main personality right now, but should we really root for a personality that's not actually him and is just a defense mechanism? Shouldn't we want a healed person regardless of who that person is?

I've known several people with bipolar disorder, and none of them have come close to acting like that. But this rom-com is lacking one thing so far that I always need for this genre to work: chemistry between the leads. So far, at least. I'm actually really happy with a lot of different pairings in dramaland lately (Healer, KMHM, Heart-to-Heart) so if the romantic aspect of this drama doesn't get me feeling invested, I'll most likely set it aside.

Be honest, I don't find this episode funny but instead a man obsessing about his heart rate and do anything to run away from being harm. Looking forward to see the character growth though!
Still I am not sure about HJM as it is too early to say anything but will keep watching it with HMKM. I personally found HMKM's 1st episode fun to watch.

ps it would be great if recaps for HMKM are published next day after it airs like this recap for HJM because both are interesting dramas!

Is that possible though? From what I've gathered, javabeans and girlfriday's jobs are dramabeans. While I'm guessing that the other recappers are doing this as a hobby/on the side.

I understand being impatient when a show is really good and you want to run here and talk about it.
Yeah, recapping takes a LOT of time.
JB and GF make they do look easy because you can't see what's behind the curtain. Watching, rewatching, writing, screen-capping, formatting, editing, proofing, etc.

They get them posted as quickly as humanly possible. Sometimes I think there are some superhuman elements involved!

I actually like that it's up later because the subs take a while. I don't even bother with healer posts anymore because by the time I can actually watch the episode there are like 5-600 comments and often people have said their piece and don't come back to read comments.

That's kind of what I was getting at. I wouldn't want to put any pressure on the minions (who are generally the ones recapping the shows I'm interested in) and I've often wondered if JB and GF wished they could have a little more time to mull over an episode before writing their comments.

My kdrama life has been revived. Officially!!!

From Snow Queen to Late Autumn, from film fest entry "Come Rain Come Shine" to the masterpiece that is "Friend, Our Legend", from Secret Garden to that chilly morning of Dec 2012....I held on to you. Been a long haitus, been a long drought, been a really tiring wait. And now, here we are, a HyunBin tv drama, finally!

Your brilliance as an actor, is my topmost reason. Even that nape can play the part. Even your toes perhaps can cry. Even those lashes can shout! What did you eat as a baby?

Second reason: er..ahh...er...ah...hmmnn...oh, sure, everybody with a beating heart can relate! Need I say more?

I have seen Hbin in many roles. I trust enough in his motivation & interests as an artist. So, I do not worrt much about what is in store in the drama. I only worry 20 eps may not even be enough. I already miss him. Waaaaaaaaa!

Thanks dramabeans for the recap. More power to you!

I liked Hyde, Jekyll & Me's first episode much better than I did KMHM's first episode. (I'd rather take a couple of minutes of horrible CGI gorilla over time in America anytime...) But that said I am liking KMHM a lot better since i know more about the plot and characters.

Lol. I think I am yet to see an America scene in a kdrama that I buy. I'm just going to pretend that both the football and gorilla cgi didn't happen.

Why everybody dont like that gorilla? It was the same gorilla that appeared in MR. GO...

Just watched ep 1. Looks interesting. Not that I'm being bias became of Hyun Bin abs scene. Lol. ?
Cracked me up when Seo Jin bite the lady arm and push her towards the gorilla. (Not cool behaviour in real life though).
Swooning over Robin already.

As much as I've been waiting eagerly for this show, Hyde Jekyll Me hasn't really drawn me in yet. I don't see much chemistry between the two leads and - I hate to say this, but I feel like Hyun Bin hasn't convinced me of his cold-hearted side. It seems a bit neither here nor there. Not grumpy enough, and not cold enough. I mean, it was comical how he bit that woman so that he can run away from the gorilla but the impact is not quite there yet for me.

I was quite irritated by Hana when she just yelled out Bing Bing without taking into consideration the wall of people between her and the gorilla. It seems more daft than a genuine attempt to diffuse the situation - or is she just obtuse?

On the bright side, with this whole vital stats monitoring thing going on, I guess we can look forward to lots of fan service from Binnie d=

Looks interesting but what is this heart syndrome, recent Korean dramas have found new cliché “heart problems, difficult to breath, low pressure. I think those are worst than amnesia. :(

I wonder if the writer knows (Lee) Seojin... I find Seojin's character similar to real-life actor Lee Seojin. Maybe it's meant to be an inside joke...

just curious why is his normal heart rate already so high anyway, i was told by a doctor a normal heart rate should be below 70 and here we see him being calm at arnd 100. i would've been ready to pass out at that stage

when I think J&H, it sounds more like the standard drama with some extra star power.
but KMHM has character, kinda its own identity (pun) like old movies -back to the future or tv series like Buffy or Ally McBeal. both very fantasticl but unique and memorable. like instantly recognizable.
I hope Jekyll & Hyde finds its own character as well, cause I do like Hyun Bin but just the premise is not perhaps that original.
so far enjoing KMHM o much I watch every ep twice and see no need to watch anything else. I guess it fits my mindset and taste, 1980ies kid as I am

........... sigh.... Big, drawn out sigh. I'm not even sure what I expected with this drama but it sure wasn't this. I kept laughing incredulously, pausing the episode to grasp what exactly was going on. Goodness, that gorilla scene was painful to watch. And the "heroic" moment when Robin leaps off the roof to catch Hana. Yikes. I could almost see the invisible line holding him as he swept in to catch her. Had me rolling on the floor and I had to watch it three times to make sure what I saw was what I saw. Or the heroine's zipline scene... I wonder how she got those ropes tied there and conveniently in Dr. Kang's office. Hmmm. I'm already wary of the looming coincidences that will be conveniently set up to get these two together...
Besides the painful action parts, Hyun Bin seems like he's in his comfort zone here, playing the rude and uncaring chaebol type. I'm curious about his family though and I'll tune in for that, the family dynamics. His relationship with Hana, I'll not quite sure about their chemistry right now. But it's too early to tell.
The disadvantage of watching this on Viki is how many commented on HB's physique in the shirtless scene. It's annoying. In Secret Garden, many said he was "anorexic" and here he's "clearly not working out?" Come on... can this guy be left alone? I agree he's lost his baby face but I'm partial to this matured look. Especially the combover and glasses, phew! His voice certainly hasn't changed, for the better.
Since it's just the first episode, I'll reserve my opinion and comparison to KMHM for later.

I still think he looks anorexic here too, he looked his best in "worlds within" perfect body mass and muscles. His skinny face, although deathly handsome, can cut glass with its sharp angles!

One thing I totally cannot fathom is the judgmental nature of Korean ppl, they seem to love to point fingers at everything under the sun, which makes me feel so sad for all ppl in the entertainment industry having to walk on eggshells all the time just to appease these ungrateful souls!

They should be thankful film actors are willing to stoop and do tv so as to keep their fans engrossed...This will never happen in Hollywood or at least not so easily! Ugh, I hate judgemental ppl!!

Pfft. As if Korean people are the only judgemental ones in the world. America and Hollywood is as bad, if not, worse than South Korea in criticizing celebrities. It's like this in the entertaintment world so don't generalize ALL Korean people as judgemental. Netizens do not represent the entire nation's opinion.

I can argue that I've never seen this "phenomenon" practiced with so much vigor anywhere else in the world, I've been an avid Hollywood film watcher, and celeb news follower for years, never seen this much investment in what celebs do or say as is the case with the Korean entertainment industry! #FACT

Let alone all the "scandal" business lol Oh God what are ppl in elementary school? When two stars are dating it's deemed a sandal? WHY?!! All the obsession about internet fodder and what netizens say or feel is absolutely absurd to me...I can never understand that mentality nor do I ever want to!

It's super easy to turn the comments off on Viki. I think this show is more designed like a comic book feel. here is definitely a sense of the ridiculous and a....um, yeah like that could happen! moments...but no more than if you were reading a comic book.

The fact that k-drama fans easily jump to hate a woman with a screaming tendency while pouring love for a man who is a total jerk and treats women like sh*t continues to baffle me. All the hate here for HJE and her character just because she screams (like won't you scream in such situations?) but barely anyone gets outraged at Hyun Bin's character shoved a girl into danger and doesn't even show any remorse for that action afterwards (because oppa is HOTTT!!!). I hope Robin will become the main personality because this Seo Jin dude is already insufferable (anotehr Joo Won with a mental illness).

No, I think most people wouldn't scream as loud in those situations and it does seem a bit odd coming from a psychiatrist. I do like her character though, just saying maybe people complain because they want her to be more realistic and not because of some gender issue.
