Healer: Episode 10

It’s an emotionally charged episode on several fronts, so everybody brace your hearts for some pinching. There’s plenty of cuteness and crushing to go around, but now that we’re at the halfway point, feelings deepen and entangle and get more complicated—especially with more of the past surfacing to shed light on the present. We thought we had a pretty good idea what the deal was, but the show has made sure to peel back its layers smartly without revealing the whole shebang, which keeps the surprises in play.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

With the press conference about to begin, our stealth team prepares to infiltrate the heavily monitored hall to do some muckraking. Assemblyman Kim’s side is taking every precaution to control the event, so that the only thing viewers see is the politician’s polished image of integrity.

ABS has secured sole broadcasting rights to cover the event live, so they’ve got a vested interest in appeasing the assemblyman. In charge of the coverage is Min-jae, who directs from a broadcast van behind the hall, assuring her boss that her team has the event under control.

At the Someday office, Moon-ho takes a few cheesy promo pictures, and Editor Jang asks if he’s willing to take a hit to his hard-hitting journalist cred. Moon-ho recalls Min-jae calling him addicted to his popularity and gives the editor the green light to sell it all for the sake of their broadcast. Everyone will be watching in curiosity (or schadenfreude) to see what Moon-ho’s up to. So give ’em a show.

With that assurance, Editor Jang promises to do his job and create some trouble.

At the event hall, Moon-ho’s sidekick Jong-soo disguises himself as a service worker. Then Young-shin and Jung-hoo arrive, dressed to the nines and strutting in like they own the place. So when they’re stopped by the staff, Young-shin sniffs in her airiest heiress voice, “Why am I being restricted?”

Identifying themselves as guests of the engagement ceremony relaxes the guards a bit, but Jung-hoo’s large bag still draws a stare. Thinking quickly to distract the staffer from inspecting it, Young-shin lays her head on Jung-hoo’s shoulder and says pettishly, “Oppa. I’m about to be in bad mood. Do something.”

I love that we can see multiple layers to Jung-hoo’s act at the same time: He’s the Healer, acting as nervous Bong-soo, who’s acting as the authoritative boyfriend. He reaches for his phone to call his “secretary,” but Young-shin tells him to call the owner of this venue “before I explode.” The staffer hurriedly allows them through rather than risk his neck over offending some VVIPs.

Together with Jong-soo, the three gate-crashers hurry to the bathrooms to prep their equipment. HA, Young-shin charges into the ladies’ room fully expecting Jung-hoo to follow, and he does the same with the men’s room. He wins, and they throw on less attention-grabbing clothing and ready their cameras.

Moon-ho calls from the news desk to check their status, and reminds Young-shin that all she has to do is ask the question. Getting an answer isn’t important, since Moon-ho will be standing by to take over the report from there.

Jung-hoo steps aside to check in with Min-ja, who again pesters him to bow out before he finds himself in bigger trouble. She warns that he’s picked up a police tail—they’re sniffing around Young-shin, and he’s already been photographed. She’s got a bad feeling about this.

But Jung-hoo refuses to leave right now, even though there’s no legitimate Healer-related reason for him to stay. When she presses for an explanation, he replies that he received a job order. She knows nothing about it, and he replies, “It’s from myself. To stay next to Chae Young-shin.” Awwww. No excuses, just the truth.

Min-ja calls Teacher to inform him that Jung-hoo has “broken free of the reins.” Now what do they do?

Detective Yoon pulls the personnel files of all the Someday employees and orders them cross-checked against official documents, with particular emphasis on getting pictures of their faces.

Moon-shik joins the Elder at home just as the press conference is about to start, and they watch together as Assemblyman Kim takes the podium and begins his opening statements. Our trio sneaks into the hall by tagging along with a distracted official, acting like they’re part of his entourage.

Now it’s a matter of finding their opening. Assemblyman Kim begins taking questions, and Young-shin waits alertly for a chance to hijack the proceedings.

Moon-ho puts in a call to Min-jae, who’s busy monitoring the press conference. But he insists it’s important and sounds so urgent that she leaves her producer in charge and steps out of the van to take his call.

When the floor opens for another question, Jung-hoo shoots an urging look at Young-shin to take the moment, but she has last-minute cold feet and shakes her head no. Another reporter steps up to ask his preapproved question, and Young-jae wilts in chagrin, recalling Moon-ho’s reminder earlier to do whatever she had to do in order to ask her question.

So she bucks up the courage and sends Jung-ho a Let’s do this look. He starts recording as Young-shin steps up, interrupting before the other reporter has a chance to speak. She addresses the politician loudly: “You know Joo Yeon-hee, don’t you?”

Murmuring breaks out, but the assemblyman ignores her and the other reporter resumes his question. Young-shin is in danger of losing her opening, and searches for a way to salvage this. She recalls Moon-ho’s lessons, and how he’d told her to throw her shoe at him if it would hold his attention. So she whips off her trench coat and walks right into the aisle, eye-catching in her sleek red formalwear, and launches into her hard-hitting interrogation before anyone can react.

She lays out Assemblyman Kim’s association with President Hwang, connecting their shady backdoor dealings—Kim scratched Hwang’s back with construction deals, and Hwang returned the favor with women, including Yeon-hee.

While Young-shin is setting off this bomb, Moon-ho apologizes to Min-jae over the phone, admitting that he needed to draw her away for 30 seconds, and that he’s sorry it had to be her. It dawns on her belatedly that she’s missing something, and she runs back to the broadcast in horror.

Jung-hoo gets wrestled aside by security, but Young-shin is able to get out quite a lot of information before security gets to her. She turns to the wall of cameras to inform the viewers of Moon-ho’s upcoming report, then hurriedly signs off. Hilariously, she trips in her heels at the last moment, sending her face-planting right onto a camera lens.

Min-jae returns to her post and the ABS broadcast cuts to pre-recorded clips, but the damage is done. And while I have limited sympathy for Moon-shik in relation to him having sold his soul to the Elder, you have to admit it’s awkward for him to have to watch this with the old man, after working so hard to insist that his kid bro was harmless.

Moon-shik promises to take care of the meddling reporter, but the Elder points out that she committed no crime, the broadcast was live, and they can’t touch her without attracting notice. He concludes, “Kim Moon-ho has sent us a serious warning: Don’t touch her.

The Elder puts his staff in emergency damage-control mode, but they were unprepared for the internet onslaught and don’t have appropriate measures at the ready. The old man is so impressed with Moon-ho’s planning that he cackles out loud, although he must be fuming as well. Moon-shik kneels penitently and promises to find a solution, while the Elder decides they’ll have to cut Assemblyman Kim loose. Would Moon-shik be interested in taking his position?

Moon-ho carries the rest of the newscast, describing the room salon video they were given by a secret informant and showing Young-shin’s recorded interview with Yeon-hee. He closes with a vow that although Someday may only broadcast sporadically, they will not put forth “broadcasts that shouldn’t be made,” wherein people in power abuse their resources to cover the eyes of the powerless. He promises they’ll come back when there are more things needing to be said, bows his head to his audience, and signs off.

It’s moments like this that you understand why Moon-ho is as respected as he is. He’s so damn impressive in that moment that his staff gapes in awe, and Young-shin sighs with shining eyes.

In mere seconds, Moon-ho shoots to the top of the search engine lists and Someday’s phones start ringing off the hook. The team members are hit with simultaneous waves of joy and trepidation at what they’ve done, but take their cue from the pleased Moon-ho, who thanks them for their work.

Jung-hoo clocks the return of Young-shin’s hero worship, and she practically jumps to take Moon-ho’s call. (And, crushingly, she turns around to chat giddily with him, her back turned away from Jung-hoo.)

Jong-soo wonders whether this is a sunbae-hoobae relationship or a budding romantic one, half-joking that he might try pursuing her himself, while Jung-hoo’s face wears this… expression.

Young-shin is ecstatic with the day’s results, her mood bolstered further when Moon-ho praises her for a job well done. She returns the sentiment, saying, “You’re a better person than I had thought. I misunderstood you momentarily.” Ahhh, it’s uplifting to see how her words mean so much to him, even though his voice remains even-keel. He hangs up and murmurs, “Thank you, Ji-an-ah.”

As the three head to the car and load their gear, Jung-hoo clocks the plainclothes cops watching from a parked car. They look away every time he glances over, and he keeps his face averted while he talks to Young-shin, who’s stumbling in her heels. When he offers her her boots, she smiles appreciatively at his thoughtfulness.

The cops remain on their tail as they drive, so Jung-hoo takes advantage of the opportunity when a large truck gets between the two cars. Urging Jong-soo to drive off down a side street, they temporarily lose the cop car. Just to be safe, Jung-hoo pulls the car over and ushers a confused Young-shin out with him, sending Jong-soo off alone. Not a moment too soon, because as he and Young-shin dart into a building, he sees the cops’ car driving by outside.

At least they’re in the clear now, and to explain his behavior, Jung-hoo plays it off like he just wanted to go out for drinks together. Young-shin assumes that he meant to ditch Jong-soo and enthusiastically agrees, conceding that it’s nicer without the third wheel. She suggests a wine bar, but Jung-hoo has a place in mind and takes the lead.

As Moon-shik leaves his meeting with the Elder, he flashes back to the first time he’d been brought here. Against his will, it looks like, from the way he struggles against the burly guards who drag him in.

Sporting a bloodied face, Young Moon-shik glares as the Elder speaks of “growth” as the process of closing one’s eyes, then reopening them to see previously unseen things. Moon-shik spits out, “Lying to the world, giving false testimony, betraying friends—you call that growth?”

The Elder replies that this is how Moon-shik can survive—and also the woman he loves. She can get the best medical care and recover, and then Moon-shik can set out atoning or loving. Hm, so it looks like we’re in the direct aftermath of the mysterious accident…

Jong-soo returns to the office alone, grumbling about being ditched by his partners. He cheers up to hear that Moon-ho’s treating the staff to dinner, and as he leaves, the camera lingers meaningfully on the bags of Young-shin’s and Jung-hoo’s clothing.

On the way up to Jung-hoo’s secret spot, Young-shin pauses in front of the elevator, balking at the last minute. She makes up an excuse about the best bars being underground, but Jung-hoo keeps her from leaving and says that he likes high places, where he can watch people from above.

The wording sounds curious to her, and he explains, “I can see people, but they can’t see me.” So Young-shin musters the resolve and marches into the elevator, although once she’s inside she clenches her fist and screws her eyes shut.

Jung-hoo sees her reaction and slowly moves next to her, his hand reaching out toward hers. As soon as she feels his hand, she’s the one who grabs it tightly and holds on for dear life. While his eyes widen in surprise, she slowly starts to calm, breathing slowly. Ever so gradually, he moves closer and closer, leaning in to kiss her forehead.

But the elevator dings, her eyes open, and he jerks himself back. He leads the way to the roof door, but he doesn’t have time to pick the lock before she gets to his side. He stammers that the key is in his other coat, and Young-shin just steps right up, pulls a pin from her hair, and jimmies the lock herself. He’s taken aback, and she warns him not to speak a word of this to anybody.

There on the roof, Jung-hoo presents her with a makeshift tent, furnished with a couch, fire, and icebox. As they settle on the couch sharing a blanket, she asks Jung-hoo to talk about himself tonight, since he’s always listening to her talk.

But he asks about Young-shin anyway, and whether the person she’s waiting for has returned yet. She chides him to talk about himself, so he muses, “Then… will I do?”

Omg. Is he making a confession? He asks, “Instead of someone you’re waiting for who won’t come, how about me, who’s next to you?”

A pregnant moment, and then she laughs like it’s his bad attempt at a joke. But he continues, saying that if she wants, he can live the way she wants him to: “For a long time, carefully, by your side.”

She sees that he’s serious and asks if he really means it, and he smiles down at her, saying yes. He tells her to take her time thinking it over, but she says she can’t. Touching hand to heart, she tells him, “Right now, there’s no room in here.”

Oof, rejected. He accepts her answer readily—so readily that she’s surprised, though relieved. She comments that he seemed like a different person just a moment ago, and tells him not to be too hurt because his rival is formidable. Jung-hoo plays the part of disappointed suitor and tells her not to rub it in, and they clink cans and resume their camaraderie. (Then she pesters him for details on when he first started liking her, and why.)

At the police station, Detective Yoon’s subordinate finishes the background checks on the Someday staff. The discovery that Park Bong-soo’s real card bears a different face is prevented, for now, by the discovery of more pressing news: President Hwang committed suicide.

Yet more of Elder’s work, of course, engineered by Secretary Oh. A simple suicide note has been left behind, with no signs of forced entry. But Detective Yoon finds the case curious for how neatly everything lines up—the penitent suicide note, the list of crimes he’s left behind, the apologies to the women he abused, and the admission of killing Go Sung-chul.

Hwang describes accidentally killing Go on the train with medicine, slipped in his drink to help him sleep, and says he was haunted with guilt. That liquid conveniently turns up in Hwang’s desk, as does his train ticket from that day. How kind of the man to make this case so easy for him, Detective Yoon says sarcastically.

When Jung-hoo arrives at home that night, who should be waiting for him but his Teacher, all smiles. Jung-hoo looks at him incredulously, as we flash back to their first meeting.

Teenage Jung-hoo is let out of juvie and ignores the smiling stranger who introduces himself as his father’s friend. Teacher follows him and reminds him that he’s all alone now, his grandmother having passed away while he was in the detention center, his mother remarried. Teacher sold Grandma’s home and possesses the funds, dangling the bankbook before Jung-hoo tauntingly.

Jung-hoo calls him a thief and attacks repeatedly, but Teacher knocks him down and prods him to steal the book from him. So Jung-hoo chases Teacher all the way to the abandoned building he now calls home. He goes after that bankbook again and again, day and night, over time learning to fight better and smarter. The training is constant and relentless, growing in intensity and acrobatic prowess until teenage Jung-hoo turns into adult Jung-hoo, and focused rage turns to exhilaration.

But one day, Teacher packs up a bag and heads off for paradise, saying jovially that he won’t be back. He finally hands over Grandma’s bankbook and a phone number to ajumma, calling that his income stream from now on. He says that Jung-hoo becomes an adult today and wishes him well. Goddamn old man, that’s cold. You left him on his birthday?

Jung-hoo calls after him, still thinking it must be a joke, watching his mentor walk away without a backward glance.

So it’s no wonder that the air is charged now, as Jung-hoo faces his deserter with distrustful eyes. Didn’t Teacher say he’d never come back? Why did he never call once? “Did you not want to?” he asks. “Or did you forget? Entirely?”

Teacher says there’s a stone in his gut that twists in pain whenever he sees Jung-hoo. Jung-hoo asks, “Where are there so many people who hurt at the sight of me?”

Teacher holds out the old picture of his friends and offers to answer Jung-hoo’s questions about it. So Jung-hoo asks why his father killed himself, surprising Teacher, who’d thought he didn’t know.

Jung-hoo has known for years, though, having heard bits and pieces from adults who weren’t as careful about keeping him in the dark as they thought. So he’d asked around and sought out his mother, but couldn’t bring himself to ask because she burst into tears at the sight of him.

So he decided to keep it to himself, and that photo was a great consolation to him; he could see his father’s smiling face and tell himself that there’s no way such a man would kill himself. But his ability to believe that ended the day he saw the same photograph in the house of the man who framed him for murder. So he needs to know, because that might give him “a reason.”

Teacher asks, “A reason?” Jung-hoo replies, “Teacher, I have no reason for living.”

He gulps back tears and admits, “And that scares me. That one day I might just decide like my father, I should just end it. I can’t continue. I’m afraid I’ll do that.” Is that what his father did? “Did my father have no reason for living?”

So Teacher tells him what he knows: Dad was a reporter, and in the course of chasing a story, he came upon money. And because of that money, he killed somebody.

Jung-hoo reels. Teacher tells him he’d dug up every bit of news after he was released from prison, but he’d found the story suspicious. Jung-hoo’s quickly losing his composure, however, and declares bitterly, “So my father was a murderer, and I’m a thief.” He screams and kicks things, and even blames Teacher for answering his question.

Teacher faces him sternly and says, “Listen up, Seo Jung-hoo. Your father, Seo Joon-seok, wouldn’t have killed anybody. I know that. You might not, but I do. So if you’re going to get so crazed over it, find out properly. Who killed your father. I quit in the middle. What will you do?”

Over at Moon-ho’s apartment, Healer checks that nobody’s home and then breaks in. He’s been prompted here by Teacher’s comment about a sixth member of the group—the little boy who snapped the photo, who’d been like everybody’s kid brother.

Young-shin sits down to write the Healer an email contracting his services. She doesn’t know his procedure or his fee, but requests a meeting with him—that’s her job request.

Jung-hoo searches Moon-ho’s home until he finds the old briefcase hidden in that chest, inside which is the collection of cassette tapes. There’s also a tattered booklet bearing the title “HEALER” and marked as a first issue, dated May 1981. The cover page bears the line: The media exists to diagnose and heal this society’s pains. Aha. So Healer was an underground vigilante publication.

Moon-ho wraps up his work at Someday’s office, and on his way out he knocks over a bag—the clothing we’d lingered on earlier. Picking up the dropped clothing, he finds something in their midst: Young-shin’s broken cell phone.

COMMENTS

Omo. Oh no. He can’t find out before Young-shin! I’ve been so excited about the possibility of her putting together the clues about the Healer that I didn’t even think to suspect that Moon-ho would beat her to the discovery. It’s pretty great from a story point of view, but it totally puts me on edge—will he use this knowledge for good or evil, or if neither of those applies, at least for selfish gain? Will he let on that he knows, or will he keep this close to the vest and use it strategically? Of course, that assumes that he’s put together the whole story, because he may not be all the way there yet.

One of the reasons I love Moon-ho as a character is that I don’t actually know which way he’ll act. For everybody else, we can reasonably predict reactions or at least understand the direction of their emotions—but Moon-ho is smack-dab in the middle (not evil, but also not purely idealistic or naive either) and could swing either way.

For instance, he’s using the Healer as incentive for the police, and doesn’t seem conflicted at all about it—but then again, I don’t hold it against him, because he has no moral obligation to help out the Healer, just as the Healer’s appeal is his lack of moral interference in his clients’ lives. He has an interesting streak of idealism that seems at odds with his coldly pragmatic side. I suppose it makes sense when you think of him as Moon-shik and Myung-hee’s child, absorbing traits from both of them.

I did really love his execution of the internet broadcast, which recalled the freewheeling idealism that drove the original five friends in their pirate radio broadcasts. Moon-ho’s actions aren’t quite on the same level (he’s not doing illegal things or acting with their reckless vigor), but it’s in the same spirit, and it’s inspiring. I certainly felt he’d earned the awe from his team, because sincerity like that comes through. He eschewed the prestige and even his own reputation in order to present the truth, and although the process earned him some jeers, the end result proves the integrity of his motives.

It’s different from his brother, although the flashback to Moon-shik’s first encounter with the Elder sheds a more sympathetic light on his past. We still don’t know exactly when Moon-shik crossed over, but the timing suggests that Moon-shik had no hand in making the accident happen, and may have been injured in it too. No doubt he took advantage of the aftereffects, but even on that score he isn’t shown to be a scheming opportunist. He was backed into a corner, and if he was acting to save Myung-hee’s life first (and not motivated primarily by his desire to claim her for his own), then I can see how he started down his slippery slope. I like that it lends him a more pathetic air, rather than one that’s purely single-minded and selfishly motivated.

That rooftop scene was a classic case of Healer’s magic formula, because it’s simultaneously angsty while also taking the bite out of that angst. Jung-hoo’s being rejected, which sucks, but he’s totally being rejected in favor of his own damn self, which is hilarious, yet because he’s locked into his disguise, he’s not free to enjoy the flipside and has to feel the sting of not being the one she wants right now, and we’re back around to pain again.

Still, even as I’m watching through my fingertips thinking Ackkkfaksdlfjasdsalkdjf, it’s a kind of pain that’s enjoyable. Your heart feels bruised but you’re thinking, More please. It’s kind of masochistic.

But even though we know that the situation is ultimately “safe”—we’re getting our happy ending, right?—the reality is, in this form, Jung-hoo cannot be both Healer and Bong-soo at the same time. He hasn’t figured out how to be both men at the same time, and so, he can’t take Young-shin’s feelings for granted. The guise he is in currently isn’t the one she wants, and he can’t figure out a way for her to be with the guise she wants, so for the time being, he can’t be with her. Thus even though he knows she’s in love with (the other) him, his disappointment is real.

Which is why it was understandable (though surprising, to me) that he was entertaining ideas of putting his Healer life behind him. His confession was most touching to me for the way he was all set to give up that dashing hero side if Young-shin would accept him for his mundane half, because being that hero doesn’t really mean anything to him. Whose heart broke when he confessed that he had no reason to live? I see his falling in love as not only a cute romantic story but a way for him to find meaning in his life, an anchoring that he’s desperately wanted his entire life, without which he’s as lost at sea as that island he envisions as paradise.

Thank you so much for the recap, as always! OMG! OMG! OMG! KMH knows now who Healer is, or he will definitely find out very, very soon (unless we were trolled, and PBS will be able to explain away having CYS’s phone, though KMH is no dummy). I need to catch my breath… Healer is SOOOOOO good, what an ending, to the last ep. for the week. Now we have to wait until next week to find out what will happen. I am fearing for Healer for the next 10 epis. I don’t want KMH to send him to the wolves (or in this case, to the hyenas). I want him to protect Healer too. Writer-nim, please keep up the good work. You, and the PD, and the actors and all involved in this drama are on a good course. WOW!!!! If that was the mistake Healer made, it is a good one to make, for what it does for the narrative of the drama. This is a cleaver way to out Healer, and a smooth one as well. I SOOOO did not see that one coming. And I am in love with JCW’s acting!!!!! That man looks so good from the side *Sigh*

I love that this show has action scenes, and yet it manages to make me cry. This is the kind of show I want to live through, there is no better way to experience it. If I am to have an addiction, let it be Kdramas (and blogs). I think this is a good addiction to have, LOL! OK, I am going to calm down (@ Omomo, I TOTALLY understand how you feel now, and why you flail around. Let’s flail around together,  ). This ep. had everything: action, tender scenes, angst and anger (passion), cuteness, great writing (though I didn’t understand much of it, but I am going to trust that it did), and great acting. I am really digging the OST, both with lyrics and the instrumentals. Man this show is so good, can I just swim in it? I just want to live with those characters, and see them up close.

OK, so maybe I can talk (a little bit), about what I noticed and loved in this ep. I love it each time Healer attempts some skinship with CYS (elevator scene). As a beanie was saying in a past recap, Healer cannot control himself, all the feelings he bottled up inside are coming to the surface, and he is itching to express to CYS how he feels. That need to touch, to feel, to caress, to hold, to hug, to smell the other person, to express physical affection is a natural desire for people who are in love, and Healer is at that place. That must also be hard for him, since Healer is not out (yet), and CYS has no feelings for PBS (yet). I was hoping that he would be able to kiss her temple in the elevator though, so romantic. I loved their date, I loved that it was not a typical date at a fancy place, even though they were dressed up. I also love how comfortable CYS is with PBS.

WOW, back in the day, Teacher was good. Loved the sequence where Teacher was teaching him how to fight, that made me cry. Healer had someone in his life then (he had companionship), and he smiled. I just love that you can even sense that the actors are getting along, and enjoying what they are doing. There was just something about that scene, and that got to me. Why was Teacher in a hurry to leave? He couldn’t even have a last meal with Healer? Really? *SMH* Now I feel really sad and bad for Healer. Teacher left without even looking back, and Healer was begging him (how painful must that have been?) No wonder Healer chose to be closed off. Why does Teacher think that he can come and go (to Healer), as he pleases?

Also, I loved that CYS’s skills came into play, when she opened that door. This is why it is important to pay attention to what happens in every ep. We never know when a scene will be referred to later on. I loved how surprised Healer was about the fact that she opened the door, and that she knew how to do that. And her warning to him, after she did it, loved it. Healer/JCW has a boyish and sincere smile, so cute.

THAT! Your last paragraph! Couldn't you just hear Jung-hoo's heart trip & fall several heart beats?! LOL. He was like, "Wow! Dae-bak! She's totally my style!" hahaha.

Thanks JB for recap and place to spazz, and Ivoire: lady, I love how you eloquently type what I have in my head. Appreciate everyone's thoughtful and insightful comments.

I have been an ardent reader of this blog but it's ma 1st time posting here.
its nice to see other Africans(and also a fellow Nigerian)here too. I was thinking of making a request to Dstv to know if the shoe and other I-matedrama shows can be aired on a special channel(the same way telenovelas have theirs).

I love this show and my friends think I have gone nuts for it.can't sat I blame them anyway. This drama has been able to draw me in.its become an addiction.

Will it be selfish of me to say I wanted YS to find out who JH/BS was. Like she would find out 1st and keep quiet bout it till d right time...Lol I know,I'm selfish but. a girl's gat to dream.

JCW fighting.

To the Nigerians in the house: it looks like Healer is about to get into some serious wouahala sha :-) (my spelling is probably not good, sorry :-) ) But you get what I mean, right?!

@ mellina,
you see now, heh? :-) (That is as much Nigerian as I know how to speak. I know some young Nigerian-American children, and when I imitate their parents, the little boy [6] asks me, "why are you speaking Nigerian?" probably because of how I change my accent when I speak in that way :-) )

@ ivoire

awww, it's not so hard to learn though(heck,I'm still trying to learn korean *sigh*).

you know, this has been troubling me.
why on earth did JH leave YS's phone in the other jacket?what on earth was he thinking? I know it's a twist but I wanted CYS to find out first. arrgh!

For the record, teacher is a jerk. who leaves a 20 yr old who wanted a family and then just show up outta the blue just cuz he feels like it?that's just mean.I don't care wat his reasons are(although I would like to know). urgh!

I guess even if it was very sad i think Teacher wanted(i must think that)he was doing what mothers do with young cubs when they come to age to make them become independent and strong and for JungHoo was when he was of legal age...we clearly see he was attached to him as a cub and as his father figure when he didn't have his own blood...it is also tender and sad at the same time seeing Junghoo hit his adolecence phase now, experimenting first love and all the other emotions
..I must say i hope MoonHo will not use Healer as beit or someting after he knows he is the son Jung Seok,he might not have the love that eh holds for Young SHin but he was also from his past and part of the group and a victim...i think he will fight on the same side...curious if he will pretend not to now and keep an eye on him for the mom and use the card latter and use him for now till he knows more about his past and who he really is...lettting him know he has the upper hand while keeping eye on him...My guess from what we knwo till now from the past is that YS parents dig up back then a big scoop about the Elders doings(maybe one or to under his name undoings)and he sent to get rid of all of them, killed JH dad and made it seem like he was the killer like he did now in present day and gave Moon Shik to choose, die along with Moon Ho and Myung hee most likely or shut up and work for him and he will spare them all...Moon shik is indeed a tragic figure if so because i imagine his choice back then thinking the power a man like this old dude had and knew he would kill them...so it wasn't really a choice for him back then...

*physical contact (if by chance she ever gets to read through KMH's mail);

*thinking about a reason to meet again (not that she took him seriously because she just teased him about him thinking all together)

*i normally disguise but i do it myself (again...she wasn't hearing any of it)

now its *i like looking down at people cz dey cant see me*...plus she had to admit the guy was weird with his confession (dint even stutter)

anyway he's too dorky to be Healer.....she cant be blamed for not thinking there at all.

0

@ mellina
I don't believe YS has made the link yet and may not think of looking up to find Healer. But she may go to rooftops and cover her face and hope that he'll see her.... :)

Let's see what response, if any, she will get for her email.

Since Ahumma will intercept the message, she may reply
"Meet me ...." but send the girl, Dae Yong, instead, or she may not reply at all, or she may tell Healer and Healer ... what will he do...? What do you think? :)

This drama is seriously crack. I love Moon Ho because there's a real struggle there and I'd love it if he dip into the darker side in second half. Both brothers are complexed and wonderfully portrayed. And the OTP is all sorts of cute and wonderful chemistry. We must now count the days until Monday again. Sighs.

Ahh, you want to see the other side of Moon Ho? I actually want that for Moon Shik. After watching the scene of Moon Shik being introduced to the Elder, he definitely seems to have a conscience. As if he were fighting a losing battle between morality vs corruption in his head. Props to him for at least trying to stand up against the Elder in the beginning. The question is, will he do so now? I want to see both brothers bond and bring down that Elder.

+10 about brothers getting together against Elder. In fact I want brothers and Healer to bond too. They need all the power they can get.

If Moon Shik takes on the congressman position, but comes around to rebel against Elder, that would be a sweet 'in your face' action for all the subservience he's had to endure. Of course the comeuppance will be terrible too!

That'd be a high-stakes business.

Here's what I'm assuming about the world of the drama:
The Elder is viewed through the lens of his role as a "political boss". While he certainly has business interests that he's serving, this drama is focusing on how he achieves his business goals through being a political boss. The Elder controls who is appointed as head of the news agency and uses that position as a key part of his operation.

MS agreed to work as part of the Elder's operation. He is the Elder's chief "political fixer" / "political heeler." His role is to engineer news stories in a way that shapes public opinion, so public opinion serves the Elder's goals, and ensures election of the officials he 'owns.'

The central underlying conflict of the drama is about using journalism to reveal/'heal' corruption vs using journalism to further the political/financial interests of the entrenched elite. All the (non-romantic) conflicts relate in some way to it, and are battlefronts in the overarching war.

Required fields are marked *

I assume we're being told that the elder is one of the biggest players on the side of the entrenched elite. And the group of friends had gathered damaging information on him (recorded in their "Healer" booklet); and had become a serious threat to his operation.

In the real world, these people still do exist. And because of the power and money at stake, they can be unimaginably dirty and ruthless. For opponents who present a significant threat to their interests: They use intimidation and threats to make the weak subservient. And the ones who both present a critical threat and are either too principled or foolish to cower; well, they face the prospect of death.

I'm assuming that MS has been a particularly productive operative for the Elder. And the Elder is becoming concerned about his reliability and reluctant to lose his services. He had previously said MS 'knows his place but isn't subservient'. But now MS is succumbing to his one weakness by drawing a line in the sand telling the Elder to back off MH and YS. The Elder is appealing to MS' pride by offering him the political position. (In reality, he would have less power and opportunity for autonomy as a political figure than as head of a news agency.) Giving MS the political position would be a way to silence MH in his newly declared independence. Because - so far - MH has been unwilling to reveal the mis-deeds of his brother.

So if the assumptions above are right, and they do band together to take the Elder down, we are in for high stakes and a wild heart-in-your-throat ride.

0

I’m also curious about how Teacher is going to be brought to the forefront of the conflict along with MH/MS. I don’t think his role is only going to be about helping Healer find out who killed his parents. There are so many loose ends I’m curious about:

What is the Healer operation really about?
Was Teacher the original "Healer" night courier? What allowed for him to be the only one of the group of friends that wasn't compromised/killed? Sure, he was in prison. But that hardly insulates him from the long arm of the Elder.

And as soon as he got a new "Healer" courier in place he disappeared I'm not buying that it was all about chasing skirts. Ajumma asked if he had a new replacement for BS ready yet. That suggests he's still working to ensure that the Healer operation has continuity beyond any one individual

What is the Teacher’s real backstory and what are his motivations?
Teacher would/should be ideologically aligned with those trying to expose corruption. But the "Healer" operation is being used to facilitate it. So was he a mole among the group of friends? Or is the Healer operation actually a sting operation? Or is he just a morally ambivalent person who gathers whatever low hanging fruit that’s within his reach?

What exactly is the conflict underpinning between MH and Teacher?
Has MH made a connection between the Healer document and it‘s connection to Teacher? If so, they should be on the ‘same side’. But MH was unusually willing to help the Detective uncover the identity of the Healer. Is there something MH knows about Teacher (who he really works for - past and present) that either pits them against each other or helps MH take down the Elder? Or does MH have a misunderstanding of Teacher’s current aims?

Is Ivoire girlfriday? You always have long comment that was posted earlier than everyone else.

It's hard for me to decide which episode is the best because there are always moments that I want to rewatch in each episode. Most scenes are involved JCW. He is the soul of this drama!!!

I love how the story is told, step by step, and it connects everything together very well. The music background is awesome. I love all the OST so far, but I wonder if they will let JCW sing an OST for this drama. He is a singer, and in almost in each of his past dramas, he sang at least a song for it.

You're fast. I don't know how I am supposed to survive a week till the next episode airs without a teaser for the next episode. Bang on about that skinship part. So much cuteness, angst but its the kind of angst I enjoy. I don't think Moon-Ho is going to do something in a hurry. He doesn't trust Healer or care for him and logically speaking he shouldn't. To him, he is an errand boy who cares about money above all. He doesn't know the fact that he is one of those whose life his brother and his silence helped mess up. But he will the put the pieces together first. One conversation with Myun-Hee about the burglar and he will have necessary information to connect the dots. So far, the story has only focused on Moon-Ho and his relationship with his Noona out of the pirate radio gang. I want to know what was his relation like with the rest of the gang. With Jung-Ho's father and his teacher. So right now, Healer's fate is in his hand and a toss up in the air. And I squealed when Young-Shi grabbed Healer's hand. Would've danced around if no one was around me. I just hope there is no major misunderstanding between PBS and CYS. I can take separation but I don't want him to be abandoned again, poor guy has been through hell already withe everyone close to him just plain ditching him at their convenience. And that almost kiss, my heart nearly exploded. All in all, I am badly addicted to this show. Its the best new year gift from Kdrama land. And you're right, Kdrama is a great addiction to have.

When Jung-hoo finds out the broken cell phone has been discovered, all he has to do as Healer is to preemptively contact Moon-ho saying that he had recovered the cell phone and slipped it into the bag. He couldn't personally hand it to Young-shin due to Moon-ho's "no personal contact" instruction. Moon-ho might think this way anyway without any prompting from Healer.

Here is to hoping Moon-ho not finding more clues by thoroughly searching the bag and clothing.

@ Snickers,

That is so clever, and that TOTALLY makes sense. I had not thought of that. About this, "Here is to hoping Moon-ho not finding more clues by thoroughly searching the bag and clothing." I hope so too, b/c I think that it would be nice to have Healer being able to get away with a good explanation, and to have the reveal be pushed back an ep. or two. How they handle KMH finding the phone, will also be a testament to the writing.

To be fair though, it wasn't like he expected to have to get out of his clothes or not to have access to his clothes...or that someone would knock over the bag and the phone would slip out. I mean, what were the chances, seriously??! (Hence...the drama...)

Also, I do think as someone mentioned earlier, the Healer isn't used to having to maintain an undercover identity for so long - slip ups aren't surprisingly. In fact, I seriously think it's amazing he's gone so long undetected! I keep expecting someone to find out he's the Healer at any moment!! But for that person to be Moon Ho...AND possibly Moon Shik too. The Moon Shik connection scares me just as badly as Moon Ho, because Moon Shik KNOWS of their background and connection. Moon Ho, obviously, is a loose canon because he DOESN'T know. The irony in both situations...the writing, directing and acting in this show is superb and elevates both the story and the character development immensely.

0

@ Rainerust

Yes you nailed it! I didn't really think it through yet, but you did the hard work for me!!! :D

0

i am not sure he's sloppy, i think his priorities changed. maybe he grew up and is bored to stay 'healer' and live alone protecting his identity.
all those rooftop scenes scream - look at me!
and then he tells her straight - he would stay with her.

0

@ Snickers,

Yeah, I guess he is not immune to losing some IQ points when in love. I actually love that Healer might be getting sloppy, b/c that makes him human, and 2nd-him potentially being in danger, makes the drama more interesting, and ups the ante. I do care (deeply) about Healer, but him being safe (all the time), makes the drama a little predictable. That was the great thing about Gaksital/Bridal Mask, the fact that the hero experienced real danger and pain. It made the drama less predictable, and more poignant.

With RE: to being in love, I just think that SJH/Healer cannot think of EVERY possibility where he might be "attacked," and that is OK with me. Him being human (and therefore faillible) is what I can relate to, since I don't do parkour, and Martial Arts and such (I just watch him being awesome at it). I just want Healer/SJH, KMH and CYS to come on top at the end of the drama. I want things to end well for them. I am not too sure about how things will end for KMH, but I wish him well. I wish he would get with his girlfriend, and marry her, and have CYS and Healer/PBS over for dinner and a movie :-)
But then, for people like The Elder, KMS, etc... (the bad guys), well....

@ Ivorie

For me, KMH's ex is a person who parrots official lines and tries to control him like his brother. I don't feel KMH respects what she does. For now, not sure if he can be with someone he does not completely respect.

@ Rainerust

Jung-hoo being sloppy: His car's make/model/color not a big deal but same license plate! Healer handling Sang-soo's and Young-shin's phones bare-handed. Carrying Young-shin's cell phone around. Why? If he wants to give it back to her as Healer, he should keep it with his Healer outfit. Sloppiness making him more human (re. @ Ivorie and you), for future plot convenience, or both. Will events continue to unfold logically and gracefully?

If Moon-ho rationalizes that Healer slipped the cell phone into the bag, his will likely focus on why Healer again did something "nice" that was not asked of him. If he gives the cell phone to Detective Yoon, fingerprints could link Jung-hoo to Healer. To me it's logical that Jung-hoo's identity/background must be altered for him to be Healer. But, the writer may not think so.

Min-ja can intercept and alter the Yoon's email containing mismatching Park Bong-soo photos. But the hard copies are just waiting to be used for one of the Big Reveals.

0

@Snickers

Well it's a drama so plot convenience will always play a part but I think the intention was really to show how he got caught up in everything that happened. Originally he never intended to tangle with CYS, thinking only to use her as bait to clear his name...so why would he think of changing his car license plate or anything else for that matter, since he wasn't going to stick around long enough?...then after that, I think it just didn't occur to him to be all paranoid about how he handles his stuff. Re fingerprints it's not like they would know it's HEALER. They might figure out it's Jung Hoo but how would they have made the Healer connection? Only those in the know (Moon Ho, Moon Shik, Elder) could possibly make the link because they know parts of the story that no one else in the drama-verse is aware of. It might trip off the detective to start digging deeper and nosing around him though...which would be exciting.

0

After Healer grabbed Sang-soo’s phones without gloves on, and suppose fingerprints were recovered, the fingerprints not belonging to people expected to handle the phone should be Healer's. These may be eventually matched to Jung-hoo's. Same goes for Young-shin's phone. If Jung-hoo's fingerprints were found on her phone, who is this person, how did he get the phone, and how could he return it unnoticed?

One thing that I didn't consider was does Moon-ho know what Young-shin's phone looked like. If not, it is just a broken phone. A person having a broken phone is not too unusual. There are people who salvage electronics. Of course, drama universe is often complex when it should be simple, and vice versa.

Lets say Moon-ho does suspect something, puts it back and sees what happens. If Bong-soo is all "what is this and how did it end up here," all is well. If Bong-soo keeps it, trouble.

0

@Rainerust

Oops. Typed in the wrong field. 2.5.1.2.3 is for you, not from you. Sorry.

0

My worry is that Moon Ho will put 2 and 2 together and get 9 - he already thinks Healer is amoral and for some reason expects he will be working on this "case" for the Elder shortly. So is he going to think that Healer sabotaged the elevator? Maybe try and take him out in some way?

Another possibility would be that this incident leads to CYS discovering Healer's identity. Maybe Moon-ho confronts both of them with the mobile phone and CYS instinctively takes Jung-Hoo's side and says that she gave him the phone so he could try to repair it (as she knows from the cameras that he is technically skillful). And after that, she puts two and two together and knows that he is Healer.

I'd be disappointed in MH if he didn't put two and two together. PBS joined as a reported just a few days ago. He's always hanging around YS and now has the phone in his pocket. Healer got Hwang's recording for YS, but only the reporters really knew that there was such a recording.

It can be explained away, but MH would/should trust his guts.

I don't think healer would have thought much about that phone being in his pocket. No one knows about the phone being lost in the elevator except for YS and MH. Even if his enemies find it on him (on his PBS personality) they wouldn't think twice about it. And I think he was complacent because he trusts YS enough to keep his secret even if she does suspect. maybe he even wants to be caught by her.

The only think healer missed to think about was MH finding it.

I know there is less than 1% chance of this but I want moon ho and healer to join hands to find out the culprit :) and how to take care of the background check??? Real pbs is discovered.. Will ajhumma do something??? Totally hooked to this drama !!!!!

0

Actually, the probability of that happening is not too far fetched. My guess is that once Moon Ho connects the dots and does some extensive research about Healer, he will uncover his identity as Jung Hoo, or the child of one his hyungs back in the day. Let's just hope that Moon Ho holds a semblance of familial attachment to Jung Hoo, which will spur him to initiate cooperation in exposing the truth.

0

@ fantasy

That actually sounds like it could happen around the final 2 episodes. When both guys have resolved their issues with each other (after true intentions towards CYS are revealed, SJH's protective romantic to KMH's protective platonic) and settled differences etc, then can they work together towards ridding the baddies :3

If only there is a preview for next week.
I wonder if KMH would try to separate PBS and CYS by firing him D':

0

@Omomo ummm, I'm actually worried about the OTHER possibility - that he will now become guarded AGAINST PBS since he hasn't made the link to how JH is his dad's son...(and therefore possibly worthy of trust...and then he might end up feeling guilty towards HIM too if hints about his dad being murdered are right and KMH had some knowledge about that too...which I suspect he mayyyyy have..it's hard to tell).

0

@reinerust
exactly.... btw i posted this question in prev ep thread too, since u guys r good in explaining so m asking again, it really bothers me the happy reaction of meyung hee seeing JH.. she mistook him as his father but still his father was accused of killing Gil Han, moreover she was concerned about his family and insisted min sook to do a check... is not it unexpected?? should not she actually hate jung hoo's father???
any thoughts friends??? :)

0

@fantasy

Since you asked...Myung Hee's reaction just convinces me that there are more layers to unpeel regarding the alleged murder of Gil Han - what is this murder? After all, all we were shown was the aftermath of a (car?) accident that killed Gil Han (implied rather than made explicit I think) and crippled Myung Hee. So was it that JH's dad was framed for murder because he was good with machines (as another commenter had pointed out in one of these threads, I forget where) and that Myung Hee found THAT hard to believe and so she never did? Also you have to remember that she's been friends with him for really long, so perhaps for her, it's instinctively hard to hate him even if she did believe him responsible for the death of her first husband. She was actually quite agitated to see him, so much so that I think if she had had more time to process it, the hate might kicked in...or she might have started demanding answers if she didn't believe that he did it. She might have wanted to know why and where he was and what he had been doing. Seeing her old friend triggered her memories of his family which is why she wanted to get their contact I think. My sense is that Myung Hee has been growing more and more uneasy with the recent incidents and there's a burgeoning sense of panic within her. I don't know if the writer will use that to drive the discovery of Healer - the potential for so many others to discover his real identity is being driven on so many fronts that I am practically nail-less now because I've bitten all my fingernails to the quick!

0

@fantasy yeah, I hope in the next episodes KMH, Healer and CYS will join forces to bring down the baddies... They all have their own respective strengths and advantages. Together they will make awesome winning combo! :D

0

@rainerust
thanks for answering, and the nail bitting... well i sincerely think sometimes that i should not start to watch this drama while airing... it always gives me an anxious week, and jcw and his acting through his eyes !!!!!! i m kind of hypnotized by them :P :P

Another thing about Myung Hee and her surprised and warm reaction towards her old friend, 'Joon Seok'. .... There seem to be a lot that is kept hidden from different people (quite annoying this secret keeping to protect a person or something).

Since Myung Hee was in hospital for a long time after the accident, she could have been kept from all the news reports etc and only got to know what she's been told. She seems to be pretty isolated with body guards and maids in the home only.... no sign of friends. Therefore, I wonder if she ever knew that Gil Han's death was alleged to be a result of murder by her friend Joon Sook.

mmmmm..... well that i think a bit weird if it was a police case (Gil Han's murder) wont they interrogate her wife ???? is not that she was unconscious or in coma.. well I have another question in my mind :P does healer work in summer also??? I mean wearing that kind of costume!!!!! okay, plz don't be irritated ;) I was just asking :)

0

@ fantasy

LOL! His outfit could be a cotton and wool version of his black leathers maybe? Wool is supposed to be cool in Summer and warm in Winter??? There are lots of man-made textiles now that can be cool but still have the look of leather or wool.

And of course he will not have to layer so much, just the hoodie and cap would do, with gloves. :)

0

@glowing beautifully
I admit that was a ridiculous question indeed :-P well I found my answer by rewinding ep 1 ... He can camouflage himself not that he always wearing that particular costume like Spiderman or batman :D... Well thanks for the reply as I m new here I get extremely happy when I get a reply :-)

I know there is less than 1% chance of this but I want moon ho and healer to join hands to find out the culprit"

There could be more than a 1% chance because ultimately they have a common interest in protecting YS and finding that both are onto it, they might as well join forces. What we really want is a reveal to Moon Ho in such a way that he believes in Healer not only as a paid errand boy but as a person invested in YS's well being. Then we can have our 75% chance of them working together!!!

In fact, I would even have liked Moon Shik to be part of this working together group, you know... both brothers, having cleared the air between them and really on the same side. Moon Shik, who told Moon Ho that he is on his side, I believe, is actually sincere in caring for Moon Ho and may have served Elder in order to protect his brother as well as Myung Hee. Moon Ho needs to know this. But at the moment, he doesn't and the brothers working together seems to be unlikely.

0

@glowing beautifully
obviously at some point moon ho and JH will join hands at some point but what I meant by that the probability of that is rare in near future... Moon ho does not trust Healer a bit (of course he has reasons for that) so now if Moon ho get to know who the Healer is, it will be not good for JH......

Moreover, again it is less than 1% chance to me, but if luckily Moon ho meets Myung Hee meanwhile and get to khow the incident of seeing JH, (and resemblance with his father, dressed like Healer) then mayyyyyy be its a chance

I m not sure that how much Moon would care for JH... I mean if MH had an idea that SJS was framed for GH's murder, then he should feel somewhat guilty for JH too... Is not it???

0

@ glowing beautifully

another thing first I thought YS was abused by one of her adopters... but Moon Ho had the info of that, does that mean he knows the abuser too, I mean if the abuser is not an unknown person , then I really want YS to beat him to death, smack him hard leaving fingure prints on his both cheeks ....

what say ??? :)

0

@ fantasy

First off, I cannot recall where Moon Ho knows about her abuse except that he did a background check on her. In which case he may not know the abusers at all, whom I guess were the people she may have been fostered out to. Definitely if they can be found, I'd like to drag them into our Healer Support Group gutter and have them stomped upon in the drool!!!! LOLOL!

Second, I'm so amused that to you I'm 'glowing beautifully'. Actually thank you. I don't mind growing beautifully while glowing as well!!! :D

0

@ GB

mmmm.... better to use the initials this time :P :P, sorry i was mistaken with ur name , but hey WHAT TO DO?? YOUR COMMENTS ARE GLOWING SOOOOO BEAUTIFULLY NEXT TO MINE!!!! :D

and I thought that abot MH, because he provided the info of abusing to healer, it is okay for him to know her age and all but how would he know what happened to her after being adopted????

@ fantasy

Yes, initials are fine too ;) and thank you!

About abuse and adoption: I think I gathered that she had been moved from 1 foster home to another, and each time a child is moved, I believe the reason/justification must be reported to the orphanage. These should all be in the report on each child, and Moon Ho could have go his hands on YS's report (although it is supposed to be confidential usually).

Until wildfly confirms or replies to you, I'll just hazard a guess. 'Mary Sue-ish' is a description of a trope where a girl/weak person is 'idealised/unrealistically good and popular with or has romantic connection to' a sunbae or sunbaes.

I believe there is not just one way to interpret who a Mary Sue character is. Different people will have a different idea.

Maybe this refers to YS who is idol worshipping Moon Ho who cares about her. And also she is liked by BS/Healer.

Another part of 'Mary Sue' is that if the author of a story wants to be in the story, the character he creates for himself is also referred to as a Mary Sue.

And hai Beanies! First time commenter/long time lurker. This show has successfully pulled me out of my shell. :3!

I watched the episode with incomplete subs. Thankfully they sub all the good parts first ;);)

Scenes I love:

CYS and PBS's entrance at the start. What an eye-catching pair they make! The transformation was executed so beautifully and completely even Jong-soo's jaw dropped. Hahaha loooved it! They played the role of entitled chaebol brats so well. CYS's airy tone and petty socialite mannerisms were spot on.
I also love how PBS's mask slipped a bit when CYS rested her head on his shoulder and called him "Oppa" Boy can't help but be affected (his pulse probably skipped a few beats then XD!) Keeeeekeke

Healer disregarding Ahjumma's warning about the investigators. When he finally admits out loud what we've known for several episodes, that he's staying by CYS's side for himself and not because of some commission. Love > Money. Going forward he is risking so much and this might very well be the point of no return and he knows it. On the line is his Healer identity, his dream of solitude (island), his freedom (wanted by the police) and his life... *sad sigh*

Another scene I loved:

CYS has been leading PBS around by the wrist since they met. I don't know why but when he pulled his wrist free and grab hers instead, I just went KYYAAA. It felt so symbolic to me, so significant. It must be if the camera is actually focused on their hands.. right? Could this be the start of a change in CYS/PBS's relationship dynamic? Will PBS's meek and stammering persona fade away to be overtaken as smooth manly SJH?

In the later scene on the rooftop, I don't think she was unmoved by the seriousness and sincerity of PBS's confession (I actually felt that he was channeling the intensity of Healer ... and *swoon*).

@ SushiBug,

(See @ GB, another beanie who goes "KYAAAAA!!!!" :-) ), so good to hear from you. PBS pulled his wrist free and grabbed hers? I must have missed that. when? (what scene?)And I agree with you, if the cameras focused on it, then it must have some significance. And you are right that CYS has been leading PBS by her finger (or wrist), but at this point, does he even mind?

About this, "Could this be the start of a change in CYS/PBS’s relationship dynamic? Will PBS’s meek and stammering persona fade away to be overtaken as smooth manly SJH?"
I think that it would be good to have a shift in the CYS/PBS relationship, though I am not sure how that would happen, to be honest. We are entering the 2nd 1/2 of the drama, so it wouldn't be bad, if some things change.

I kind of don't want SJH to be totally smooth and in control when he is around CYS (well, not all the time). I still want his heart to flutter when he is around CYS, and I want it to show. So not totally PBS (though I LOVE PBS), but not totally Healer either. I hope that I am making sense.

Awww!!! And it is your 1st time to comment? Well, WELCOME!!!!!!! I am sure glad you did (delurk).

I think it's round the 24min mark, when she was going to take him to a restaurant/out for a drink(?). He decided they should go to his choice of location and lead her away.

As much as I loved dorky puppy Bongsoo, I think I'll tire of that pretty quickly if it was my BF. I'll settle for BS-like reactions during the more lovey-dovey scenes :3

0

@ Ivoire and SushiBug

Welcome on board SushiBug!!

And KYAAAAA ... KYAAAA (and drool) during all those OTP scenes, all those smiles.

Yes, I noticed that change in the dynamic. He suddenly pulls out of her grip and says can't they go to a place he chooses, so he takes the lead. It's a good healthy relationship. All couples should be able to pass the lead back and forth if necessary without feeling threatened.

I'm not sure if it will last, since she rejected Bong Soo, but again, at the end of it, it was he who initiated the toast with such a lovely smile and she reciprocated. KYAAAAAA!!!!

Thank you thank you.

I agree that couples should pass the lead back and forth. I dislike shows where one is very dominant/controlling and the other is submissive to the point of helpless.

I hoping when more of SJH's personality comes to the surface, we'll have some playful banter between PBS and CYS. We've gotten glimpses of that in this latest rooftop scene.

0

Shout out to Healer fans - just dropping by briefly to read comments and join in the drool/KYAAA fest! Seriously, such feels from this drama!!

That rooftop date was sooo sweet - it just killed me when he smilingly nodded his head during his confession, while never breaking eye contact with her. And his deep Healer voice - kyaaaa!

Love your comment about "passing the lead back and forth"! I love watching them being protective of each other (even if the story - inevitably - strays into Noble Idiocy territory). They're meant for each other in so many little ways. And that's even before they know/remember about growing up together!

0

@ Thursdaynexxt

Hey, great to have you with us!!! Love my comment? Thank you kindly.

And I love yours about never breaking eye contact and just softly smiling and nodding his head and saying 'Um'... Now THAT is romantic. *heart flutter flutter*

0

@ GB,

About this, "And I love yours about never breaking eye contact and just softly smiling and nodding his head and saying ‘Um’… Now THAT is romantic. *heart flutter flutter*"

You are so easy my dear, Hahahahaha!!!! You are such a romantic. However, I understand, b/c I am a romantic too :-) I have rewatched some parts of this drama (the early episodes), and I keep being glad that JCW was chosen for the role of Healer, and that he accepted. He is perfect for this role, and I actually love each actor and actress they cast for the characters, even the bad guys. They are all delivering, really. The bad guys make you want to swear and put their heads in the toilet (or do something violent). And I also love that many characters have shades of grey, instead of just being black and white. I am really hoping that the writing will stay this good till the very end. Healer, Fighting!!!!!!

0

"The bad guys make you want to swear and put their heads in the toilet (or do something violent). And I also love that many characters have shades of grey, instead of just being black and white."

Ah violence, violence, what just stop with the toilet? Well ok if you want toilet ... what our Support Group could subscribe to:

For the really black bad guy: a stint in our Emergency Room with any number of our instruments of torture, you know stuff to slap ourselves with so that we can bear the excruciating pain of waiting for Monday. And add on the 2 other procedures below.

For the dark grey bad guy: roll him in the stalest gutter drool and stomp on him plus the important procedure below.

For the lighter shade of grey bad guy: Feed him bad milk (credits to Misaeng and Chief Oh!) and leave him to stew in the loo! ROLOLOL!!!

@ Saema, Hello!

I think the most commented on drama on DB to date is The King2Hearts. I remember those days. Some threads reached more than 2,000 comments. I have not (yet) seen another drama (being recapped here) reach those numbers. You can see that here:

1--http://www.dramabeans.com/tag/the-king-2-hearts/

City Hunter also had a lot of comments, the last ep. of Big did as well, and I think YFAS had a lot of comments as well. TK2Hs, is the most commented on so far though (meaning the drama with the most comments for an ep. That would be ep. 20, 16, and I think at least a couple of ep. had around 1,500 or more comments).

Actually wasn't there some irony in his "I got a commission" statement? Did the writers forget? In fact he DOES have a commission - Moon Ho has said in the stairwell he will pay and pay handsomely . . . but that hasn't been run through Ahjumma but she'll see the money in the account presumably.

I think Moonho's instructions to Healer was to protect CYS, but not contact her. Ahjumma, too, urged him to stop hanging around her since the inspectors are sniffing around.
His decision to remain by her side came really more from his heart than his brain. He's perfectly capable of meeting the terms of his commission and staying out of sight, only he doesn't want to :3

Yeah right!!! if only JH followed his instructions to avoid physical contact during the elevator disaster...i wonder who would be buried six feet under the ground or cremated by now; and who will live his life blaming himself for it??

He just better thank his stars JH loves YS.

i might be taking this personal but im so not digging the KMH ship right now.... Big shame on him for contacting Detective Yoon. Big Shame!!!!

0

I think when KMH instructed Healer to cease contact with CYS, he meant the way SJH "reached out" in ep 7. That would've made KMH very uneasy as CYS was not meant to even know about Healer. SJH obtaining the harddisk and delivering it personally to CYS was definitely outside of his request. At this point he doesn't know/trust Healer's intentions (his line of work is pretty shady afterall).

Healer is expected to watch CYS from the shadows and swooping in to save her when needed, which is what SJH would have done if it was any other job where had no emotional attachment to the subject. SJH is taking unnecessary risk posing as PBS. But yay for viewers because we love PBS :3

Wait a bit, if Young Shin knows and remembers her real birthday, then it's going to be another birthday memorial day??? Can't be, right? As that would mean a whole year has passed. The story began with a memorial day on Ji An's birthday. It's only been a few weeks on the drama timeline, I should think. Anyone know how long?

So might the birthday YS is celebrating in a month be her adoption day instead? :)

0

the one secret i don't mind staying in the shadow is the "my-dad-killed-your-dad" one...
surely Healer is not one to take the noble idiocy's road, right?? RIGHT????
please... don't use that trope show!

0

@maythida

noble idiocy road...kdramas favorite lane. im patiently waiting for it and building a wall around myself to avoid getting upset with Healer and just accept the idiocy as it comes.

Please disappoint me writers and PD-nim!!

0

@ deezle

As wonderfull as this show has been developing, I'm fully prepared for it to go down that tropey road.

SJH is already angsting enough over the fact that his father might be a murderer. Add CYS's father to be the victim is just cherry on top for every kdrama writer.

0

@ Growingbeautifully

Perhaps Ji An's memorial day that started this show was not to commemorate her birthday, but her supposed death. The timeline will make sense then.

0

@maythida @ deezle

I take comfort in Teacher Healer's confidence that JH's father is the sort that's incapable of killing his friend to keep the "my dad killed your dad" trope away from this show.

Teacher ceased his investigations because he was unable to find Moon Ho, then. Not so now as this ep has shown, Moon Ho is being now being investigated by JH. He will surely discover the Elder's hand in the deaths of both Joo Seok and Gil Han.

As for Moon Shik, there are hints that he may not have any part in their deaths after all. He's not as bad as we had thought previously, at least not in the beginning.

0

@patinalee

i concur with the death memorial...birthday will be a flaw to the script (newaiz a flaw im willing to overlook)

0

@patinalee

its only normal that he'l freak out and withdraw for some time before the truth is discovered.

lets just hope that the idiocy wont last for that long or in the case of pinocchio wont last at all.

*those pinocchio guys need a serious tutorial on what a tearful break up is all about...it sure doesnt include adjusting hoodies nor putting pieces of paper back together (except ur classroom teacher forces you to)*

0

@Growingbeautifully

if i remember correctly, the story began with a memorial for ji an's death, not her birthday. so nope, a year hasn't passed. :)

0

Thanks Everyone! OK if that memorial celebration was for her death anniversary then it makes sense on this timeline!! :)

0

@ SushiBug: "SJH is already angsting enough over the fact that his father might be a murderer."

Ikr? He hasn't even found out about Young Shin yet and he's in existential crisis mode! I keep wishing they'd both find out in a way that allows them to support each other ... but then it wouldn't be a drama, I guess!

I WISH that was how HWJ ruined me, because then he would have seen me naked, and so I would have seen him naked too. Because one's nakedness should prelude another's, amirite? AMIRITE???

(Omg imsosorry this comment sounded so dirty right now even my skin is crawling, i just cant really resist, it demands to be said hahaha this is not how i am normally i swear!)

Re: nipple clippings, haha I just mentioned that for comparison because the wait will truly be excruciating. No one in their right mind would clip their nipples with nailcutter just for kicks.

That said, I should probably say that I am not in the right mind right now in light of all this Healer craziness, so stay tuned for recent developments, I guess?

I can't wait for the subbed episode to come out. Why does Viki have a restriction?? Wae?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Viki has the restriction for North America because of Dramafever which has "exclusive" rights to Healer. Unfortunately, DF releases subtitles a day after Healer airs and the subs are passable but not as good as Viki. I actually use hola so I can view Healer on Viki.

Required fields are marked *

Viki's license is for North America but with that 2 week hold back thing = Viki gets the episodes on the day they air but the licensed region (in this case NA) can only watch them 2 weeks later.
Qualified contributors have immediate access and they are doing the subs.

It's stupid and I feel for all the people who can't watch the eps immediately on viki!

Required fields are marked *

I’m from the Philippines, so Viki and Dramafever are practically nonexistent here. What I usually do to get my Healer fix the soonest is to just download the raw video file via torrent (torrent links are up lightning fast and are made available just RIGHT AFTER the episode airs in Korea, I think) and just wait for Subscene to release the English subtitles. That way, I can watch the epi raw since I can understand some Korean, and just tune in here in Dramabeans to pick up on some parts I did not understand.

0

Well this week (since it's been the first week for me to be on track w/ Healer since I had to catch up last week^^) I watched the broadcast via (crappy) live stream :D

And I'm lucky to be a QC on viki so I have access. But dramfever is unavailable for me as well since I live in Europe.

My problem with DramaBay is sometimes the translation is off or not complete. I was using DramaBay and Myasiantv, but I stopped once I decided to use hola to access Viki. Also, both Dramabay and Myasiantv were seriously slowing down my internet which in turn affected my ability to work and surf the internet while watching... I'm a multi-tasker.

0

I agree with @xine that Dramabay (and Myasiantv) is faster than Dramacool. Dramacool used to be much faster, but I noticed in the last several months, especially the last few weeks, that Dramacool is taking very long to upload even the raw for Healer and other shows.

I really hope that the whole cast (especially JCW), the producers, and the writers will get to read Javabeans' fantastic recaps and all the meaningful comments here (as well as a lot of unintelligible sounds and/or drooling but they are all meaningful). I wish someone could let them know about a beautiful collective puddle of goo albeit a large one formerly known as "us".

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Nope. Hence the whistling. :)

Well, usually Korean fanclubs are almost like companies in their own right, and have a lot of established cred - not sure how true this is, but I've even heard that fans usually "pursue" or support only ONE celebrity at a time, although that seems a bit intense / hard core to me - so that goes a long way in getting people to hand over money to send the food trucks. Also the fanclubs benefit from people who usually know Korean heading the fanclubs and are thus able to contact (in Korean) food truck companies (I'm sure there MUST be companies or people who do these things, just that we can't find them using English search terms) and get everything organised and delivered. It will just be like organising a massive catering event that's all. LOL I think the only people on DB who could pull this off would be the team of recappers (especially if people need to fork over money) but then our recaps would be delayed and I'm not sure that THAT would be what we want.... LOL

In RM, he looks about 18. As Healer, JH n BS, he looks about his own age of 28. But towards the end of this ep, when talking to his Master in anguish, he looks like he aged 10 years.

JCW is one of very few actors that can play any character convincingly as evidenced in Healer and his other dramas.
He's so good at portraying those characters with high difficulty! He added layers and his own touch to make the character totally irreplaceable. I'm always amazed at the way he acts and this is coming from someone who watched almost all his projects.

Dear Healer Beanie Fans,

I am reposting this here in the hopes that more of us will read this ....

(Comment 218.4.1.2)
We now aim for at lest 2364 comments by the start of Episode 11 on Monday night.

That means we need have Beanies commenting at a rate of 14 comments per hour in the next 76 hours. :D

Let’s go people! Jump in into our (jet)boat for a wild ride !!! :D

76 hours was then, NOW our countdown is 58 hours until Episode 11 starts, and we need 12 -13 comments an hour to reach 2,364.

Yea! Yea! We are at 1964 comments now!!! If we take the original target of 2,000 ... there are only 36 more comments to go. We're going to exceed that target easily. SO HAPPY

*jumping around with curlers bopping on head*

If we still aim for 2,364, we'll need a whopping 364 more comments within these last 43 hours, ie 9 - 10 comments an hour. Let's see how it goes. But we 'Yea' people are going to keep working at it!!! Oh Yes!

Did u notice that the jr detective in the police station had found the real Park Bong Soo's driver's licence w picture? That'll cause some problem. won't it?

Can ajumma fix that? Or is his cover blown good?

0

Required fields are marked *

He didn't notice. Neither did the officer doing the digging point it out to him. So, I guess Ajumma still can fix that bit if she is aware of the Healer's PBS cover. Its too soon for everyone to find out. There are still 10 more episodes to go. Moon-Ho might figure it out but I really have no clue as to how much will he figure out. Will he figure out PBS is healer or PBS is healer and is also Jung-Ho. And how he will react to it. So far, his only priority is to do right by CYS. How much of that will change when he finds out PBS/Healer's real identity is a big question. But whatever he does, he won't be reckless or impulsive about it. He will do a lot of digging before he finally makes his decision.

I was surprised that they let her have such a big oversight...especially when she knew detectives were digging around. But I guess since it IS episode 10...

Well, Healer was not supposed to stick around for so long. If it's just for the original 3 days, the fake identity is sufficient. The longer he stays, the greater the possibility of him behind discovered.

The jr detective had no idea what he was doing or seeing--just following instruction. He was about to hand it over to Yoon when the phone call came in. Healer saved by the phone call, for now. And we r left to worry about him.

Required fields are marked *

I don't think BS's cover will be blown just yet.

Before the photo can be shown, the junior was asked to email it to Det Yoon, the call about Trash Hwang's suicide having come in just before that. Once emailed, Hacker Ahjumma WILL be notified of it and can than take care of it. We have previously seen her getting such notifications before allowing the Healer team to stay steps ahead of the police.

Having the threat of exposure hanging over BS' head will however keep us viewers, on edge. Especially for the JCW shippers amongst us. :-)

Confession touched me too
I like that he said to the effect that as long as she wants he will try simply to stay by her side.
I interpret it the way JB did that he doesn't mind leaving healer behind and live as PBS. May I say he himself was a little inspired by their team reporting the news.
That bit was filmed really well. I felt the pride and awe they felt for KMH.
Story telling is great in this drama I hope they keep it up and the standard doesn't fall.

I dont think he was inspired by the reporter job... mind the reaction after the news broadcast, cys and jong soo were swept away by that but pbs was like.. Huh!!! what's so great about that??? I actually like it... a man who even did not watch news, totally isolated from social affairs, is not expected to move much by that, he is kind of incapable of realizing what is good or bad in a social platform but i think he will start to enjoy it, may b the bcause of KMH, CYS influence joined by his repoter father's memory :) :)

Its JCW's fault that I m cheering for a thief and hoping police to not to catch him!!!! oh evil me :P :P

Love the ending, the symmetrical discoveries that JH and MH made of each other:
One knows the other is the Healer thru YS's broken phone in his coat pocket;
The other knows the other knows a great deal about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy that befell the group of 5, esp. JH's family.
Beautiful symmetry!

I had wondered that also, if he felt YS was in any danger, would he bring her to his home? :)
Ajumma said, when she found Healer's teacher in his home, that Jung-hoo never brings anyone there; even she doesn't dare enter. So it would be the most prudent and ideal spot to hide out. (my cheshire grin cannot be contained! Commence fan-girl spazzing!)

On a side note: Have to wonder what YS would think of that nice, big, fluffy bed...*snicker*

@Healeraddict I totally agree with you on her knowing who Healer is first before hiding out in his pad! Now, I wouldn't be against her just finding out Park Bong-sook is Healer, really named Jung-hoo, and staying there to sort out their thoughts, emotions, and feelings...

I just had a thought...Healer's lair is like Superman's fortress of solitude! It's where Superman learned all about his abilities, his lineage, and grew to become Superman. Similarly, Jung-hoo grew up and learned from his teacher skills to make him become Healer in that abandoned warehouse. Plus, Superman eventually brought Lois Lane to the fortress. So if the writer is making a similar story line, how exciting it would be to see out OTP in Healer's Lair of Love! Lol.

0

@ thetofurkey and Jafstar

I was thinking that somehow Healer's pad might be the last place he'd bring YS because it is all wired up and open to Ahjumma. Totally no privacy. She even knows when he eats (he suspects a hidden camera). Safe place, .... maybe. Cosy couple corner ... Nope!!! :)

0

@Jafstar

I also suspect she would have a difficult time leaving his place. NO DOORS. A beautiful thing.

They can just stay in and watch cheetah documentaries. I could happily watch an hour-long episode of that.

@Growingbeautifully

I had completely forgotten about Ahjumma's inopportune house calls, ha! It's been a while since we've had one of those scenes. With reporter work during the day, and Healer work at night, I don't know when Jung-hoo finds the time to sleep. That may also explain some of the slip ups he's had this episode.

@thetofurkey Lol! No doors! Yes! Lock her in Healer! ?
Sit on that awesomesauce couch and watch hours of cheetah documaries with YS. Sounds good to me!
On a side thought, that rooftop couch was dae-bak too; sitting under blankets under the stars, hands almost touching, drinking beer next to a majorly hot stud muffin. (How could she keep her hands off PBS?! Lol. I know, but come on!) sigh. It's only Thursday....

Did you notice that both YS and JH spoke of "no snow" tonight; wonder if they both were contemplating their kiss...I was! ?

@Growingbeautifully Healer's teacher mentioned that Ahjumma had impeccable timing in calling him too....poor "food" deprived men. ? That cray cray Ahjumma! I do believe she knows exactly what goes on, and probably crackles in delight of her mirth! ?

0

@ Jafstar: agree re the "no snow" comment.

On my subs, I definitely think Jung-hoo said "there's no snow *today*" (so no kissies!) - and I was totally squeeing for Young Shin to pick up on what special significance snow has for him! That Snow Kiss is one of my fave kiss scenes!

0

"No snow"

I sort of had a flicker of thought on that but yes, you're right. That looking up for snow was the two of them remembering that kiss between the 2 of them, and both not able to mention it!!! IRONY! The frustration about this sort of thing is killing me!!! :D

Well basically Healer is a thief, he takes any kind of order: stealing document, etc, and of course STEALING NAILS and KISSES :)

When he takes order, he doesn't regard the moral or ethical issue, he just doing the jobs for the sake of fat pay cheques. But one thing that makes healers different with the Double S guard Goon who also in the same field, he's not taking any order to hurt or kill no body.

I agree! He is a VERY talented actor. I have honestly been impressed with the entire cast thus far. I want Kim Moon-ho and Kim Moon-shik to join forces against the Elder, a throwback to their late night Healer reporting days riding in that van. They both care deeply for the ones they love and apparently will do anything necessary to keep them safe. In this way, I think these brothers are more alike than they are different.

More beautiful words from @dreamingsnowflake2013 [Tumblr]:

"There are five certain things in the life of a Kdramaland male lead - first love, Samsung/LG smartphone, time jump, tears and a makeover. Not even Healer himself can escape the famous kdrama makeover. Especially when he is cornered by three salon ladies who are feisty and extremely enthusiastic about their job. And who can blame them?! Oggling, touching, measuring those rippled biceps, triceps, 50cm broad shoulders,… Some people have luck! How I envy them! He stood no chance against them. I believe the final count is Healer vs Salon ladies - 0 : 7. But to be fair, they had the superior numbers.

All that hilarity that ensues! JH and YS are really two peas in the same plot, such two cute oddballs. I’m utterly astonished how great JCW is at comedy, though. I knew he was good and his PBS act was funny but this, this is a competely different level! The facial expressions and the body language are pitch perfect! I particularly love the one with the neck tie - it’s as if he’s just seen his worst nightmare, LOL (no doubt a meta on JCW’s KBS Drama Award appearance where he was sporting one) and then the last one!

How uneasy JH is while being surrounded by so many people and how flustered at being the centre of the attention. Nor is he used to being touched and most certainly not by so many people at once. I believe this is the first time we see Healer truly scared because I don’t think that he is barely mantaining his PBS cover. If you think about it the only one with whom he’s been having regular personal contact is DY and even with her he barely speaks. He’s never met Ahjumma and he does most of his commissions by himself during night without getting in contact with anyone - he must remain unnoticable, basically invisible. Therefore it’s no wonder he is freaking out. I remember his Teacher mentioning his autistic behaviour before and JH really does show very moderate symptoms of Asperger, though I’d say that it’s more the consequence of all the trauma and misery he’s experienced rather than an actual disorder."

I LOVE this show!!
Definitely one of the best in 2014 (along with YWCFTS and Liar Game, but there was no romance in it) and quite possibly the best in 2015!
I HATED Heirs (it was horrible, let’s be honest) and couldn’t get into You’re All Surrounded (despise Puppy being it it!) because of a lack in the story outside the cute team thing going on...

I loved You Who Came from the Stars for its romance and comedy, but I couldn’t really buy into the purely evil psychotic villain in it... however, in Healer, I like how most of the “bad" people so far are just being painted dark grey instead of pure black. This way, it holds more truth and makes the story deeper. Instead of watching myself watching a villain copied and pasted straight out of a marvel comics, there seems to be a little more effort being put in here.

red (dress)
....juxtaposed with all shades of grey

AH, and also: the easy comparison would be to compare Healer to City Hunter - I mean, a few elements are shared here (outside of Park Min-young, obviously): the double personality hero and the naive pure hearted girl who isn’t too smart (had trouble making it for her public function exams in City Hunter and having failed them in Healer) Still, so far I’ve found healer a lot more compelling to watch, perhaps because the characters are a lot more credible... or the story thicker. But hey, we might have to wait until the last episode to see if they will make a rushed ending the way it was done with City Hunter.

I agreed, all the characters even the baddies seems mmore complex. They have a lot of layers to them!

Yeah, I launched into a huge spiel on ep 8 about why I find the characters here just a little bit more compelling/credible than City Hunter. Completely agree!

I have been comparing it to City Hunter as well. Likewise, Healer is thus far, in terms of storyline and flow, stronger and more exciting than City Hunter. Bravo PD-Nim and Writer-Nim. And all the cast and crew! Job well done!

Imo, healer has a way more interesting story especially what about what happened all those years ago . I'm extremely curious about what happened back then. City Hunter had an un interesting story concerning the previous generation.

City Hunter had the stronger fight scenes (or at least in my impression it did) but I agree that Healer is totally owning it in terms of story complexity and character development...as well as in the chemistry between the leads! I mean I love LMH as much as the next noona, BUT JCW is totally blowing him out of the water with Healer!

I agree with you that City Hunter had the better fight scenes. The Healer's action looks very unrealistic in comparison. This drama is far superior chemistry between the main lead, better romance and feel good moments. I never cared for Park Min Young's and Lee Min Ho's romance in City Hunter even though it developed into a real romance off-screen.

Partly cos Nana was a harder character to root for in CH I think. She wasn't as layered as CYS is in Healer, so sometimes I felt the story became a bit one dimensional. The evil parts were also one dimensional. Heck, even LMH's character (as freaking awesome at fighting as he was) had not as much character development as Healer is having here. But I really did enjoy the fights in CH. There I kept replaying the fights. In Healer I find myself replaying CYS's phone calls to PBS (cos I LOVE those moments of vulnerability) so they each carry different merits. I do love the chemistry in Healer though.

I agree that city hunter had better fight scenes (the spoon fight? Like wow) and guys, refresh ur memory of a HOT lee min no ( delete that memory of the embarrassing HEIRS)
But I felt the romance in city hunter got sidelined in the second half, nana was not a fully developed character unlike young shin here. All 3 leads in healer play a pivotal part in the story telling and character development have been equal to date. If it stays this well, I'd say the show is fundamentally different from City hunter whose main arc was daddy Issues.

0

It makes sense that City Hunter's characters weren't as likable because they were undeveloped and less layered compared to Healer. For me, Healer has been more interesting lately because of it has had less action scenes and focused more on the romance between the main leads.

0

That's why I'm holding my breath HOPING that it won't end the way CH did...or Ima hurt somebody!!! (more likely myself...or at least my pillow) Please give me my happy endinggggg, you hear that Writer Nim??!!!!!!

'Whose heart broke when he confessed that he had no reason to live? I see his falling in love as not only a cute romantic story but a way for him to find meaning in his life, an anchoring that he’s desperately wanted his entire life, without which he’s as lost at sea as that island he envisions as paradise."

*******************

My heart broke, JB.

My heart.

My poor broken heart *sniffles* *sniffles*

I cannot even articulate HOW broken my heart was throughout the whole scene in which Healer was essentially pouring his heart out, baring his soul, tearing at my heartstrings so hard, I literally had to stop watching and listening to the LIVE stream for a minute to catch my breath because I literally could not breathe!! *heart aching*

Credit to Ji Chang Wook for his pitch-perfect acting.

His every facial muscle twitch, trembling lips, furrowed brows but most of all his EYES - all say so much, express so much EMOTION, words fail me!

Javabeans, I cannot recall the last time I was as affected by your words as I am with those last words in your comment for this thread!

I can't even...think right now...*sniffles*

That and this “Where are there so many people who hurt at the sight of me?” just broke my heart into pieces.

Thank you JB for your wonderful and fast recap!

No wonder he wanted to live in such a beautiful paradise by himself when: 1 - His mother left him at such a young age just because he reminds him of his dead husband, 2- his grandmother died while he was in detention so he wasn't able to properly say goodbye, 3- his Teacher left him by himself with no warning whatsoever on his birthday!

Now, after meeting/knowing YS, for the first time he wanted to protect somebody and willing to leave his dangerous life just to be with her for a long time...wow! heart melting! Where can I meet a guy like him? Guess I'll have my own paradise too all by myself! LOL ^_^

@Whisper

Yes, I totally agree with your choice! You are so right!

In fact, the WHOLE scene was totally heartbreaking, every single word Healer said in his trembling, choking-with-tears voice and eyes brimming with tears, that I cannot choose just one particular moment that is more heartbreaking than the rest. *tears flowing*

How deeply can a heart be hurt for anyone to say such soul-shattering, heart-breaking words :

"I have no reason to live"

“And that scares me. That one day I might just decide like my father, I should just end it. I can’t continue. I’m afraid I’ll do that.”

"Did my father have no reason for living?”

“So my father was a murderer, and I’m a thief.”

******************

HOW does one continue living with such words in one's head? How does one WANT to continue living?

Words that kill oneself, spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, slowly, excruciatingly...

*tears flowing*

HEART. BREAK.

@koreandramalover/kay

"HOW does one continue living with such words in one’s head? How does one WANT to continue living?"

I knew someone very close to me who tried to commit suicide. I didn't know that she was having a hard time, she's a quiet type of person but she tries to make everyone around her happy. When I asked her what was the reason she did it, she said that she had enough and that she doesn't have a reason for living. Her first words when she opened her eyes the next day was: "God I'm still alive".
So yours and JB words, and this drama hit straight to my heart. I'm really thankful that my friend is still alive up to this day and so does she.
So for those people out there...never lose hope, because all your worries/problems right now are just temporary, just be patient and lean on God for He will take care of you. (~Matthew 11:28).

Glad your friend made it through her dark days. She's lucky to have you for a friend.

0

@Whisper

Thank you @Whisper dear for being there for your friend when she needed you most. A friend in need is a friend indeed. God Bless you for being that kind of a friend! ;)

As for your sharing about your friend, thank you so much for sharing because I know it must not have been easy because it has happened to me too.

A good friend of mine has been on many occasions been on the brink of giving it all up. However, with God's Grace, Love, Help, Guidance and Mercy, and with love and care of her family and friends, she managed to pull herself together and thank God she is fine now. But that period of time when she was in that state, words fail me on how difficult life was for her that I was afraid whenever I don't get to see or hear from her it may be my last time to see her alive.

So I totally empathise with your feelings of being struck in the heart watching that scene and listening to the words being spoken out loud. It is like a case of art imitating life and how heart-rending life's trials and tribulations can be for some of us.

And I totally agree with you that no matter how hard life can be, we have to tell ourselves that we cannot give up.

Our life is not our own. It belongs to God and God Alone has the right to take it back. When the time is right and only God Knows when that is.

So before that time comes, we all need to treasure the life and time that we still have to be a better servant of God and a better human being, so that we can leave this world a better place than when we entered it. God Willing. ;)

Thank you so much once again, @Whisper, for your kind and touching sharing! Take care and God Bless you and your loved ones always! Let's continue enjoying the awesomeness that is the drama called Healer, shall we? ;)

0

@Whisper

Thank you for your kind words but I credit everything that is good that I do or say to God for God Alone Deserves all the praise. I am only what God Has Given me. And all that I am is a servant of God who tries with my every breath to become His grateful and worthy servant.

Thank you also for your kind wishes! ;)

So glad to meet wonderful souls such as yourself over here in this wonderful place called DB! ;)

Gosh this drama is definitely bringing back memories. Just like what @siesta said that JH's dad killed himself leaving him and his mom by themselves and a picture showing how his dad looks like having lots of fun with his friends.
I felt so bad back then because I didn't have an idea that she was having a hard time...I was supposed to be her friend and should know that she's having a tough time! And that made me mad too that she didn't even bother to ask for my help, but it's all in the past and that made us closer to each other.
Who ever this writer is really knows her stuff. This is like another TK2H in the making. Hoping this drama becomes successful coz that's what they deserve.

re: "His mother left him at such a young age just because he reminds him of his dead husband"

THIS. I was holding off on commenting on this bit because it was too early to jump to conclusions when this info was presented in ep.4, but in light of our SJH's heartbreaking revelation, I am just going to come right out and say it:

With all due respect, FU VERY MUCH SJH'S MOTHER. What kind of mother are you to leave your young son behind and just after his father's death no less? I dont care about your effin' reasons, and even if they're valid, I dont give a sh*t! Get over yourself, because you have a son to freaking raise and take care of!

Now this is just me venting out, and I may eat my words later on in the drama once they dole out more information. But not that we know how lonely and heartbreaking the kind of life SJH has lead until now, and how this breaks our hearts too, I think we're warranted with a little bit bitchin', right?

My sincerest apologies for not remembering you immediately. I remember now how crazy in love we were with SKKS that we were commenting into record-breaking numbers, right? :)

I have always used the same alias/post-name. So have you? ;)

So, how are you, @pastmidnite? It's so goood to see you again after sooo long!!! ;)

And now we meet again at another drama thread that is close to breaking the comment record!! ;)

Are you following any other dramas? I am also following Pinocchio, which is on tonight and tomorrow!! ;)

I have not commented in any dramas for some time because of, well, you know, life...hehehe...

It's so good to meet you here, @pastmidnite!! ;)

We can continue sharing the love for Healer and commenting till the cows come home!! ;)

I have also been enjoying my time reading your comments (and the other beanies here) and especially sharing the love for JCW/Healer!! ;)

@kay

So it IS you! If I'm not mistaken, back then you used to use the abbrev kdl instead of kay, so for a while I was hesitant to greet you, afraid that you're somebody else LOL

I followed Pinocchio till episode 14, I think, and haven't continued watching because you know...life ;-) I think I'll marathon it when I have the time. Well, I actually don't know how I managed to fit this Healer madness in the little spare time that I have LOL

So happy to "see" you again here after alll these times! Yes, I've been using the same name since the first time I set foot on DB :-D I just haven't commented a lot because, you know again...life hehe. Somehow, Healer managed to push me back to the commenting world LOL

Jung Hoo's loneliness and desolation I felt from that scene (especially in that wide shot of him left alone just as Teacher departed, looking lost and scared and helpless). My heart crumpled into a tiny ball. Teacher, you cold-hearted old fogey. Okay, I may be overreacting, he ain't that bad... but how could he?! How could he just leave him alone like that? Gaaah. That scene. Damn you, you stupid Teacher! What's even more heartbreaking about that scene is that that may have been the very last time SJH had been childlike with and dependent on someone. That may have been the last straw before he finally gave up on human connection altogether, and decided to not just give a sh*t about anyone and anything anymore. Because it is easier and less hurtful for him to be on his own and not expect anything from anybody anymore. Aaagh. My heart.

And as for Moon Ho, judging from comments, I must be the only one who never felt that much for him.
I just didn't like him much at all and didn't understand his actions. He always came off as pompous to me.
This was the first episode where I actually felt for him, I could see and believe him as reporter with integrity who lost his way.

And he found the cell phone !!! Am getting a feeling that there won't be good terms between both. And him not being in good terms with healer, would easily drive Moon Ho to out healer.

I'm with you. The thing that bothers me about him is how self-focused and manipulative he is. He does have some noble intentions and concern for others. But it equally seems it doesn't bother him to knowingly hurt or use those people, if that's what it takes to get what he wants.

Required fields are marked *

I too am at a loss for Moon Ho's actions. If it were as simple as Noona having seizures whenever discussing her daughter, then I would understand his reluctance. However, I feel there is something else that keeps him from being a completely honorable person in all this madness and I have yet to decipher what that is. Is it because it is his brother and there is loyalty to him somewhere deep inside? Is he afraid of the fallout and how it will affect Noona when she learns her husband has some serious moral issues? But what I don't understand is that when he learned via video that KMS gave a command to murder that guy along with healer, it's hard to see what's holding him back from telling everyone what he knows.

Regarding the cell phone... For a while I thought Moon Ho finding out might be the next step in the plot. Because somehow in the next 10 episodes, we have to win a war against the Elder and all he stands for and all the secrets that are being kept and to best way to get to that is Moon Ho and Healer learning about each other and teaming up (of sorts). I mean, Healer has to learn about the elder from someone, plus it gives the writers a chance to show more backstory and how it all came about. My guess is that Moon Ho will put that phone back in the pocket but keep a watchful eye on PBS. Then, Healer will fix the phone and give it back to CYS, which will confirm it to KMH. That's my guess anyways. There's always the theory that he'll call PBS into his office and just hand PBS the phone letting him know without saying anything that "I know who you really are."

0

Required fields are marked *

@ BlueDragonfly

That's a very good conjecture about the next move of Moon Ho and that he and Healer could team up.

We will also need to add to the mix, the complication that Moon Shik may end up running for mayor, so that exposing Elder, will definitely mean exposing his brother for Moon Ho.

"it’s hard to see what’s holding him back from telling everyone what he knows"

For me it goes back to the story he told Myung Hee. There isn't much he can do so he's biding his time so he can deal it a blow it can't recover from and in the meantime the only one that is invested in all this but not already involved is Noona. We've been shown that she is too delicate to know the truth just yet before there's a resolution. -Inspite of the seizure i have a feeling she might be stronger than we've seen.- He knows the organization would just provide a sacrificial lamb and keep on conspiratating *it's a word now~ i made it one. You can ask my spellchecker if you don't believe me ; p* and I think he has an idea of how far the scope of the Elder's reach is (and may even be aware of part of the reason Moon Shik became his minion but I don't think he really understands that it looks like Moon Shik did it mostly to protect Myung Hee noona and Moon Ho- I think MH believes it was to coopt noona for himself, but I think Moon Shik felt he didn't have an option except to go along with the elder to save everyone and that might be true except instead of trying to subversively fight, like Moon Ho has, his Hyung appears to have begun to agree with the Elder that the end justifies the means. [I say appears because I'm not sure if the series will throw us a twist as all these characters are so deep I don't know if we've seen all their motivations yet. Maybe Hyung IS a rebel- but I doubt it because his guilty conscience ghostly apparitions are still accusing him and if he was working on a rebellion then I don't think his conscience would be bothering( oh good lord that just came out as bathing him! Good thing I caught it... cursed spellcheck! What am I going to do with you! ) him too much. Not to mention the wrong done to Ji Ahn by MS was pure selfishness with no altruistic motive behind it.... Anyway, did that make any sense at all? Just my thoughts as you can tell by all the 'I thinks' thrown in.:)

This is my first time commenting because I'm generally more of a sideline stalker of this website (heheh), but this drama has got me so incredibly hooked I couldn't help myself. It's everything I wanted City Hunter to be-it has the revenge plot, the twisted villains who were once good guys, the plucky heroine with her own emotional and traumatic baggage to deal with, the guy who you just can't quite figure out (Kim Moon Ho), and the tortured, broken, damn near Brontean hero, who has become powerful and commanding in his secret life and believes himself to be an island, when the reality is-he was never made to be.

The story uses this information and each episode begins to open our besotted Healer's eyes to this fact.

He is most definitely NOT an island-he's just lived as excess baggage the majority of his life, which could leave anyone feeling like a useless hunk of rock. Rocks don't need anyone, after all.

Ji Chang Wook has captured this splendidly. With every sidelong glance, casual brush of the hand, and yearning, soulful gaze, he becomes (to me) similar to a Victorian romance hero. It's got to be all those stolen glances and kisses-hushed conversations and seemingly (to the hero, at least) insurmountable problems that leave me feeling this way.

Keep up the fabulous work, Dramabeans, and stay vibrantly wonderful, Healer-ya.

I've been getting the Victorian-romance hero vibes lately, too. In fact, for a moment in this episode (while he was in his fancy threads with his hair slicked back), my mind automatically pictured him in Victorian era riding clothes (and he looked awesome, natch). I totally love "every sidelong glance, casual brush of the hand, and yearning, soulful gaze".

Yes, to the Victorian romance hero - it's all very romantic and swoon-worthy.

I've yet to watch E10 subbed - one of the advantages watching an episode unsubbed is that it allows us to watch every flicker of emotion crossing the actors' faces. The elevator scene I just couldn't breathe... I was light-headed and giddy with glee. Ji Chang-wook makes every flicker of emotion believable.

I did precisely the same thing. Watching unsubbed really does allow one to delve deeper into the emotions the actors are portraying because you are so open to their every move and tonal change. And that jawline... *hem hem* oh sweet biscuits does that man have a jaw!

Beautiful comment. You have your way with words!

"...the tortured, broken, damn near Brontean hero, who has become powerful and commanding in his secret life and believes himself to be an island, when the reality is-he was never made to be."

"He is most definitely NOT an island-he’s just lived as excess baggage the majority of his life, which could leave anyone feeling like a useless hunk of rock."

Captured JH perfectly. Bravo!

Thank you @omomo! I've enjoyed reading your comments on postings as well. There is just something about the way JCW portrays Healer. He's not just Jung Hoo (the abandoned boy with a shattered psyche and a hole the size of Russia in his heart), he's the mystical Healer (a powerful and self efficient man whose physical and mental prowess are so incredible that it seems he needs no one), and the mystified Bong Soo (a nervous, fidgety, newbie intern whose just trying to figure it all out, much like us all). And all three of these vastly different personalities are really all just various facets of himself. He's a little lost boy with the powers of a human superman but no real experience with human relationships, and that's what makes him such a fabulous character. To simultaneously be Superman and little orphan Annie; strong yet fragile, powerful yet weak.

One thing we can say about Jung Hoo with certainty: he isn't whole. But who knows? Maybe Young Shin can guide him through, up, and around the potholes in his bullet riddled soul and together they can shore up the cracks.

They need one another in a satisfying, unusual way. It isn't the male lead saving the female lead constantly: this is a two way street and we got ourselves a couple of Clark Kents.

Yes, yes, and yes. I keep nodding my head while reading your post. Your description of Jung Hoo so far is pitch-perfect!

And another big YES for your last sentence. I love how they're 'give and take', and not one person is dominating the other. They both affect each other in a way that the balance scale doesn't tip in only one direction.

"...an anchoring that he’s desperately wanted his entire life, without which he’s as lost at sea as that island he envisions as paradise"
CLEVERLY WRITTEN!! I couldn't have picked a sentence so perfect!

I agree, it's not just a simple cute romance on his behalf, he's drawn to her on so many levels and CYS's character is surprisingly drawn to him (an unexplainable crush).

*Sigh* one whole week before the next update!!!

Omg I loved this episode (though the save from the falling elevator/snow kiss epi will forever reign supreme) what IS it about this show!? So adorable! So fun! Everything is working so right!

I squeed when Jung-hoo told Ajumma that he'd received a job commission... from himself, to stay by CYS's side. I imagine I wasn't the only one, right?

Squeeing right here with ya!

For once he's doing something that HE himself feels compelled to do so. Love that he's not just merely an 'errand boy' now; he has become a protector.

Just a thought, the way the Elder plotted the death of Hwang is also the same (i guessed) what happen in 1992.
Healer's dad committing suicide and being framed of killing CYS dad.

I wish KMH will confront Healer and Healer will say who his father is and then they will work together. And Healer will go to his mom again and will see the picture when they where young.

Can't wait for the next episode.

Hmm interesting theory, I thought I was the only thinking that. You may be right since that is the easiest way to get the murder blamed on someone else and before police could suspect a different murderer, they had the person framed and killed.

Something about the way he moves around whether he's fumbling, walking, running or jumping, it's so pleasing to the eyes. Maybe it's his physic, something about his 'gangster shoulder'.

Thanks for the recap.

"Gangster shoulders"? I take it you must mean his 50cm shoulders :D although agreed the way he moves is so natural and smooth it doesn't look like he's acting at all.

JAVABEANS!! a quick question on teacher's confrontation with junghoo. isnt it 'find out who killed your father' and not 'find out who your father killed'? the sentence I heard was '누가 니 아버지를 죽였는지' and those two statements are entirely different.

Oh hm, you may be right, thanks! (I thought he was referring to the connection with Young-shin's father, but that makes less sense.)

Yeah I also think the latter would make more sense in the context of the episode. But as I don't understand Korean, I hope someone can clarify this for me :) Much appreciated!!

Also, when Jung-hoo tells Young-shin his reasoning for loving high places bc "I can see people, but they can’t see me.” I feel like this is going to be a clue to outting him to Young-shin later, bc she'll realize where the Healer is, always guarding her but not letting her see him.

I can't WAIT for Young-shin to find out who Healer is, and I wonder what the dynamic will be like when she wants to be close to him but he chooses to distance himself when he realizes his father "supposedly" killed hers. UGH 10 MORE EPISODES MEANS 9.75 MORE OF ANGST =.=

@ foreverwonderlust

What I really appreciate in the interactions between Bong Soo/Healer and Young Shin is that wherever he can be, he is honest. As in saying that he was thinking of excuses to use to meet again and this one about liking high places. So he is giving her the clues, she just has to let the penny drop, eventually.

I'm actually ready for her to know or catch on that he's dual identity Bong Soo by day and Healer at night. And would love it if she knows but pretend she's none the wiser for some time - she's more than capable. Put some of the 6th sense of hers to work quick time!

@ namedx,
I really love your idea about CYS finding out (somehow) who Healer/PBS is, and pretending not to know (for a while), while trying to (also) protect him, at the same time.

0

Aww thank you Miss Ivoire, now that's a nice thought, he can sure do with some protection himself, and who better than CYS. It's nice that he's got that feeling of being able to depend on someone after so many years of loneliness, even if it is as PBS. But I'm sure he's reeling in the fact that she's willing to protect him even as the Healer - now that's love right there.

And as an aside note, I've always wanted to respond to some of your questions that you sincerely post for each ep. Seems so much fun, but I'm always late for discussions due to work. One day. Lol

@Ivoire

that is most definitely what is gonna happen...how else can the story go?

@Growingbeautifully

his honesty is shady :) He sometimes looks like he is dying for her to know the truth about him but just cant tell her face to face. he looks like "come on!! im saying so much, y cant u catch on!!!"
