Pride and Prejudice’s preemptions and extensions
by girlfriday
Do you want the good news or the bad news? Okay, bad news first: MBC will be preempting both episodes of its Monday-Tuesday drama Pride and Prejudice next week for the station’s two big awards ceremonies. The Entertainment Awards will air on Monday December 29 (for variety programs, comedians and MCs) and the Drama Awards will air the following night on Tuesday December 30. But never fear, because there’s good news too: The network is in talks with producers to extend Pride and Prejudice by an episode, which will make up for the earlier preemption that set the episode count off by one.
It’s reportedly not a finalized deal yet, but the extension doesn’t come as a huge surprise given that the show has been consistently pulling in first-place ratings. MBC has done pretty well in that timeslot all year from Empress Ki all the way to Pride and Prejudice, though the current ratings battle is a sad one that often remains in single digits. (It ranges from 9% to 12.8% in any given week.)
I still haven’t caught the show (I’m so behind on new shows… that I guess this one doesn’t even count as new anymore. Sad.) but I hear good things about Choi Jin-hyuk and Baek Jin-hee as bickering prosecutors. Hopefully one more episode won’t derail the story, though we can never underestimate the damage of a badly handled extension, can we?
Tentative plans put the episode count at 21, with Episode 18 resuming in the new year on January 5. If the extension goes through, the series will end on January 13, to be followed by fantasy historical drama Shine or Go Crazy. What say ye, is More Pride and More Prejudice a good thing?

Seriously... This drama is good at 16 eps in my opnion.
I love Choi Jin Hyuk to death and he is super charming in this drama. I was rooting the otp in the drama too but it has gotten super boring with just talk talk talk .
The romance that should have started weeks ago has died down too. Too bad because with how this drama started out so good, i found myself not caring for the cases anymore.
Even baek jin hee bores me so so muuuch
I wish CJH can do one more awesome drama or movie before enlisting ( which wont happen =/ )

i dunno.. for me this show is so intense with their cases that sometimes i just forget about the romance..
and as for the romance, YM said she cant accept DC's love (yet) because of the lingering "sorry" feelings towards her brother case, so he just give her a space.. i dont think the romance die though.. my 2 cents..

I lost interest in byul or so whatever cases that intrigues me for the firts 12 eps
I wish this drama keep having fast paced like 16 eps but 21 eps will just ruin the drama.

I somewhat agree with you both. What I miss is the strong bromance with CJH & LTH's characters. Now we only get glimmers of it. I felt Taehwan has really become a young actor to look forward to, but this is a pretty big cast and that could also be wearing down on the storylines.
Then I think, this might come to a satisfying end, especially given the amount of episodes left.

Good news: I can catch up the remaining eps, as I still stuck at ep 13. More Choi Jin Hyuk and Lee Tae Hwan never hurts too.
Bad news: any extension is worrisome.

How is an extension "good news"? I may only have seen 100 or so Dramas, but in the list there isn't a single one that benefitted from an extension.
For a unremarkable Drama as passably ok as "Choi And Prejudice" an extension is VERY bad news. Unless, of course, story, plot, characterisation are all irrelevant and the only criterion for calling it good news is"more of my Oppa's face on screen". Which does seem to the case with basically EVERY extension, ever.

GF and JB are usually against extensions. I think the main reason GF considers this one as potentially good news is that rather than extending the original run, this one is making up for the episode that was preempted, thus preserving the integrity of the script/original plan.

Sorry, but that makes no sense. It's an EXTENSION, by definition an EXTRA episode. It's not "making up" for n episode, it's just scratching the networks insane OCD itch which sees them terrified of not airing two episodes in a finale week. To quote your words it is very definitely "extending the original run". an EXTENSION is all about EXTENDING. Which is probably why they call it an extension.
The 1 episode that was pre-empted was part of the initial set of 20. Without an extension, we would have had 20 episodes, with an extension, we'll have 21.
That episode is not a replacement for a "missing" episode, it's an ADDITION. It does not preserve the original story/plan, it alters it, by making the total runtime not less than 5% longer. And now that I've seen 17, I am even more certain that 21 is a very bad idea.

This story had so many twists and turns, that I do not think it can get damaged by one extra episode. You never know what can happen next, so... I imagine they can do a final contortion.

I've been watching this drama, but honestly, it's not one of my favorites. I think I got stuck on episode 12 or 13, and have been too busy with the new dramas to pick it up again. Not sure why it's leading in the ratings - the romance is slow, the story mediocre, and the characters are nothing to write home about. Maybe it's finally getting better though...

I find that Pride and Prejudice is one drama for which non-Korean viewers really needs good subs or recaps to help us along. So much of what is spoken esp by Moon Hee Man is obscure. If the extension helps to clear up the ambiguities then that's good. If it is just going to drag out the obscure sayings of Chief Moon and add more question marks, then it's pointless. :)

You said what I was thinking. I'm enjoying this drama, but I am having difficulty in following the story line. Maybe it's because so many names are involved. Korean names baffle me. There are so many players in this mystery that I never know exactly they are talking about. That and Moon's mumbling have me stratching my head.

I do wish there were recaps here to confirm what I think certain scenes are inferring. There's a lot of "double talk". I do really like this show and I or one never cared about the romance. At least the extension is only one episode. I do think they're goig I need to shift gears a bit now though because it really has been mostly verbal posturing lately. On the other hand I think the show has been fairly good about subtly shifting focus each week. I want more bromance personally.

The constant inuendo in Moon Hee Man talks is a bit baffling to say the least so I hope we'll have a clear explanation of what is actually going on
I do love that it is all about the "pride" of the prosecutors against the politics of the institution though.
As for the romance, i could'nt care less, i'm really not impressed by the female lead. At first i thought that the dead-fish look was part of the "i'm so prejudiced about this all world and i fell guilty about my brother's death", but it's been too long and i just think that this actress has the emotional payoff af a brick wall.
But yeah to more bromance !!

I agree that this show is a particularly hard one to follow for those of us who aren't fluent in Korean. I don't find it draggy so far (however, I'm only on ep 14 and I'm taking it slowly), but I do feel that I've missed some pieces of the puzzle because a lot gets lost in translation.
Thanks to someone's reference in the last OT, I did find some excellent commentary on the show at kdrama.today~ but the author isn't a Korean speaker and has a lot of questions herself.

This is my favorite drama right now. There isn't anything that CJH can do wrong these days in my eyes. He is the shit. The supporting cast is great and the chemistry between the leads is good. Even if the added episode is just some silly rap up it's better than no extra episode at all. I think CJH has yet to serve in the military so I'd be willing to bet we are going to lose him soon for a couple of years.

I knew this would happen :(
I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with this show - the directing is good, the cast is fine. I do find the writing of the ~mystery~ kind of convoluted though. It makes sense (sort of), but the reveals lack dramatic oomph. It's not like nothing is going on, but recently I've found the episodes tedious and I wish the show would just end already. I think it only really needs 3 episodes to wrap up, not 6. Miniseries keep getting longer these days (more series that are 20 episodes rather than 16), and I think they're suffering because of it. This show could have been 16 episodes easily imo.

I'm enjoying this drama a great deal. I'll admit that initially it was Choi Jin Hyuk that drew me in, but it was the story that made me stay. I expected it to be a show I watched just the first few episodes of, mainly to look at CJH, but it's definitely much more than that. I find it gripping, the building of the moments of tension is excellent, and the web of connections and corruption intriguing. However, I don't think it needs even a one episode extension. Although if you think of it, I guess it's not an extension; it's just bringing the show back to its original episode count... We'll see how it goes.

To add: one reason I'm sceptical about an agenda is that something that's been missing from P&P a little is a sense of urgency about the central case. There have been things that happened that maybe were meant to create that urgency (talk about the statute of limitations, the threat of Dong Chi's transfer, etc.), but none of them were really followed through. It's been a slow burn, and I worry that an extension would slow things down even more, when they could do with being ramped up a little bit at this point.

everything is connected - it's like an onion - the main story line was just one layer of the big thing, which is comming up
love this show, very well written, not just some other usual korean melodrama :-) = it doesn't need any silly love story, anyway they work so hard, that there is no time for it, maybe Prosecutor Gu won't be murdered and maybe his boss is protecting him, let's see...

Yes, there is too much inter-connectedness. The level has gone beyond absurdity but I'm willing to overlook it just to get to the bottom of the reveal.
Questions I want answered: Was there someone behind the bringing together of most of these connected characters? Was the forming of the welfare team of prosecutors half coincidence and half manipulated? If it was manipulated, was it intended to bring down the Big guys behind the sex ring? Or did those big guys manipulate it to protect themselves and it is now backfiring?

I completely agree. That's actually why I don't want the extension. Because I feel like everything has been plotted so intentionally so far that an extension could throw everything off. It's interesting that some people are finding the drama to be more boring...when I'm actually finding it to be more interesting.

There is much more going on then I can understand but still this is my favorite show right now. (Pinocchio is on hold pending my daughter's participation and Healer is not fully rolling yet)
The extra episode will probably be shoe-horned in and ruin the pacing but as Stuart said "more oppa facetime!" (okay I paraphrased. sue me)

I honestly really like this show. I'm used to kind of paying half attention and then reading a recap when I get lost, but it's hard to do that when NO ONE is recapping o.o I don't think I've ever payed this much attention to a drama.

Love this show! As most of the earlier comments indicated, this is one show that a non-korean speaker will find challenging to watch even with subs and that is mostly due to Prosecution Moon's rambling. There's a lot of double talk amongst the attorneys that I find hard to follow. I find I have to rewatch it on Viki after initially watching it on Dramafever or Soompi because Viki has the most comprehensible subs.
Notwithstanding, I enjoy the drama a great deal, a large part because it is not the traditional romcom instead it includes a lot of mystery, investigation and suspense, but at the same time it's not too intense. Kind of like watching Bones or Elementary as opposed to Criminal Minds or CSI. In my opinion, it doesn't need a romance plot between the leads, and I kind of wished the drama didn't introduce one to begin with. The romance between the minor characters more than makes up for it. This show is pretty good at ambiguity, you're not sure who's good or bad and there are surprise twists in it. An extension of just one episode cannot hurt the drama, because it brings it back to its original number (20).

That one episode extension is probably to develop the romance between the two leads which seems like a force. I could care less if they end up together because the relationships apart from theirs is so riveting. I'm not liking this extension except if it is to further explain Chief Prosecutor Moon's involvement with the kidnapping, or mend the heartwrenching rift between Ahjussi Lawyer Jeong and Puppy Kang Soo. That's all that matters to me. That stilting romance is only cute to watch when CJH is being cheeky and petty.

Pride and Prejudice started off really great, but the last few episodes have been really boring. Most of the clues and points for the main murder case have been revealed so the show seems to have shifted more towards office politics and the darker side of lawyers. It's a lot of talking and any romance or relationship building has been set aside. An episode extension may not be a great thing, but if they solve the case and devote the last episode to the OTP and friends I'd be okay with that!

Yup, totally agree. I don't think the murder/kidnapping was ever intended to be the "main" case, it was a lead in to the wider exploration of corruption in the justice system. And since opinion surveys in South Korea show that Koreans think that the Prosecution Service is among the most corrupt institutions in the country, I think that probably has something to do with the show being a consistent ratings leader.

I'm repeating what many have said above. I loved this series when it started. At some point I started having a hard time understanding it. I find with this kdrama I have to wait for the viki subs. A bit more coherent, though I'm still confused.
One question I've always had when I see Moon: "Will someone please get this guy a pair of eyeglasses that fit?!"
Somehow I still find P&P interesting, and as TJ said above CJH can do wrong in my book.

It started well, interesting mystery/cases and good chemistry from both leads, but it's like they forget that Dong Chi and Yeol Moo are even supposed to have a love line. I'd like an extension if it means the author can finish what they started instead of losing an episode. I did wonder last week if the show would have worked better at 16 or 18 episodes. Last week the plot was circling, though it still delivered some good moments for the characters. Ep 16 has some cool developments, though.
The show is definitely not about Han Byul's murder per se, but about the Korean justice system. It's not delivering a tidy procedural with quick answers, or a standard K-drama romance.
But that's what's really interesting about it. We thought the answers would be easy--because they're always easy on TV shows--and then the writer says, actually, because of the justice system, it might be impossible. Even for a great Choi Jin Hyuk character.
The side romance between Prosecutor Lee and Yoo Gwang-Mi is a typical K-drama romance, with a lot of cute silliness. They aren't quite parodying K-drama, but they're close to it. Whenever the camera goes into their office, I feel like we've left reality. Especially last week when he was talking to the high school kids. He even managed to get a case that's like a K-drama case! I enjoy those two characters, but only because they are comic relief.
Then we have Dong Chi and Yeol Moo, who have real stuff to worry about. I don't mind that the flirting is on hold while they figure out if they'll have jobs tomorrow.
I wish Girlfriday or Javabeans were commenting on this show! Since the beginning, I know that a lot is getting lost in translation. Even when I watch two different sets of subtitles (thank goodness that's possible!), it's tough. I have the impression characters are choosing their words carefully, to obscure as much as they reveal. But Korean and English offer totally different ways to be ambiguous. And rambling Chief Moon appears to have lost all faith in words as a form of communication.
Still, it's cool to watch a K-drama where the words actually matter. And where the OTP may or may not work out. And where I don't even know if the case can be solved. The fact that they keep finding clues like characters in a Nancy Drew novel--yet the clues are actually no help--just reinforces the idea that justice isn't straightforward. I enjoy the suspense and surprises.

It started out really promisingly - good leads/great chemistry, interesting mystery - but it's sort of rambling about corruption among the prosecutors now, and much as I love Choi Min-soo it's starting to drag. Also, this has to be the first drama I've ever seen when a secondary pairing gets more 'moments' than the leads of the drama.
They did have a few really good moments from the mystery angle, with some reveals, but not so many in recent eps.

this is probably one of the best korean/legal drama I ever watched. all of the tensions is very well-paced. high quality writing at best. the romance subplot is ok but I din't think it is the focus of the story.
the ending could have been better though, I think it was kinda rushed. they could have added more tensions when the true culprit was revealed, but I guess they were running out of time.
