Happy Friday Beanies!! It’s been a rough week with lots of bad things happening to those around me as well at what seems a more dark and melodramatic week in kdramas. Happy holidays? My mother will be visiting next week so I am actually excited but I have a feeling I will be quite behind on my drama watching…unless I can talk her into watching random episodes.
Drama thoughts:
Healer – I’ve watched all four episodes this week and I have to say that I had no idea what to expect and I’m not entirely sure I understand the tone but I’m really enjoying this. The leads are excellent and I get a kick out of several side characters. I do hope that they continue with this balance of fun and melodrama and don’t suddenly get bogged down with the sadder aspects of the story. I really want more Bong Soo even though I know he can’t last forever.
Modern Farmer – With so many serious storylines going on now I actually felt like the lighter moments (like the whole meteor plotline) felt a bit forced and out of place. I’m still upset about Bul Ja. I know it will work out (I had actually been hoping that she’d somehow found her way to his parents’ shop), but I thought maybe one storyline could become happy before the very last episode. It’s kind of killing me that the show isn’t ending next weekend since they’ll only be airing one episode. I need resolutions!! I’m increasingly frustrated by Yoona. I always thought hse was rather void of character but now she seems more like a plot device by suddenly showing signs of jealousy when she really didn’t show much signs of even liking Min Ki.
Running Man – Finally some levity in my viewing schedule. WOO BIN!!! This is the most comfortable I’ve ever seen him on this show. He’s been on so many times that it only makes sense that he can start to joke around with the cast members…and even learn from Kwang Soo. So enjoyable I was smiling the whole time. However making him one of the spies meant the episode really focused on him and I felt a bit bad for Hyun Woo who didn’t get that much focus (and I seem to remember the same thing happening last time).
Let’s Eat – About halfway through this now and I’m LOVING it. It just shows that there doesn’t need to be a fancy plot to be good or hold the audience’s interest. I love the food scenes and I love the characters. I have yet to find myself getting bored and I’m always looking forward to the next episode. Many thanks to the Beanies who recommended this in the end of the year threads…and also sad it wasn’t in the voting polls.

And for fun what show that’s been announced are you looking forward to the most in 2015? (Reasons are not required but are appreciated)

Jekyll and the one with vampires. :) I don't think they will be good though because it's always like that, the underdog shows are the ones that surprise me like Let's Eat, IOIL, Misaeng, Healer and VL and the shows I was anticipating to be fun are those that disappoint me like Cantabile, YAS or Pinocchio. That vamp thing has trainwreck written all over it. :)

Interesting that you're disappointed in Pinocchio - I almost only see unrestrained love for that show. I'm liking it but I think it's got some issues. It's got some really great moments and good acting though (for me).
And yes, I agree, the vampire one sounds like a trainwreck...but sometimes that's something you just can't turn away from lol.

I think Pinocchio is the sort of show that goes for your heart. :) It doesn't care about anything as long as it manages to keep everyone emotionally attached. Kudos do to the writer that once again managed to get so many people to like it.
I had a complete different reaction than IHYV though, if in this it was love at first sight and I forgave it's flaws, in Pinocchio I hated the setup so much but I thought logic would come back in the rest of the show. However it didn't, on the contrary, every single episode there is something big that I find absolutely ridiculous, as a consequence I never get invested in the conflicts and in powerful scenes like in ep 12 I'm caught up thinking nonsense, like how beautiful PSH hair looks, the only character capable of eliciting any emotion in me in the entire story is Grandpa because he is the only one believable.
I don't talk much about this because I know people love the show a lot and it's a very different love than Misaeng for instance, so I don't think there will be many people eager to want to know just how much Pinocchio can be absurd to others. Maybe I underestimate their curiosity?:)

I think that's a fair analysis of Pinocchio. I haven't seen IHYV so I didn't really have an expectations going into this. I do think there are a lot of great moments and acting...and some great emotional notes. I haven't seen 12 yet (I'm all the way up to it though) and I definitely wish there was more discussion on the plot just because some things do bother me. I like the show more than you do though....although I really think another 8 episodes is going to end up being perhaps too melo for me and I won't even have a particular plot I'm interested in to excuse it for me. I have a limited melo/angst tolerance.
But I'm always curious! I like hearing different reactions to shows an episodes so long as they're respectful. I think that's what's great about shows - the same scene/plot/actor can elicit such different reactions or memories in people.

Shows I look forward in 2015:
1. Let's Eat Season 2: well because I love the season 1 so much! Food porn and all! I always prepare myself with some foods while watching to keep me from being hungry. It would be good if they can cast the same actors. Love Doo Joon as foodie insurance worker.
2. Descendants of Sun: Kim Eun Sook. I'm curious if she can write melodrama well. Also curious of the leads from this so-called blockbuster. It can't be as bad as her previous drama, right?
Running Man: Yay for some Kim Woo Bin!! The episode is really funny because KWB and LKS is just gold! Really miss KWB on my screen. Movies need too long time before released. I have to resort re-watching Heirs *yawn*, Friends 2 or any project he's in.

You know I never cared much for Doo Joon before. I've seen him in B2ST stuff and he's always been the one who least caught my attention. He was honestly just kind of boring to me. But he's great in Let's Eat - probably my favorite right now - and I'm going to be very disappointed if Season 2 is a whole new cast. The cast is 70% of the charm of this show. 25% is obviously the food. I'm starving just thinking about it!
I miss KWB on my screen too. I understand movie sets are a little less strenuous and pay more but....is one drama so much to ask?! *aegyo eyes*

For you, too? ::hugs::
Let's talk about something fun instead!
what show that’s been announced are you looking forward to the most in 2015?
Blood: Because evil vampire-boxer Kwon Hyun Sang, that's why! :) I'm sure it will be delicious vampire-doctor cheeeese. Also, boxer= muscles glistening with sweat. Mmmm, manly.
I'm also looking forward to the Sageuk vampire show later in the year, because: Vampires in period costume = gold.

*hugs back* Yes, this week ha been killer, but I agree that it's preferable to focus on something fun like kdramas!!
I'm always a sucker for vampire things and have been since I read Anne Rice as a child. There does seem to be a lack of actual *quality* vampire things though....but I'm so on board anyway even if it turns out just like it sounds.
I'm really curious about the vampire saguek. There are so many possibilities with it and I hope it turns out well. (Also, was there maybe a rumor of Park Hae Jin being in it? I'm on a Hae Jin kick right now...)

I prefer scary vampire stuff (ever read Robin McKinley's book "Sunshine"? ::shiver::), but as long as the vampires don't sparkle, it's all good with me.
I don't mind cheesy vampire flicks as long as they know they're cheese - sometimes you just want mindless entertainment. :)

I like Healer too. Like you said, I am unsure of the tone as well...but it seems like a very pleasant watch. Plus, after disliking Park Min Young in A New Leaf, I am happy to find myself liking her here a lot. The role fits her like a glove. As an aside, it it me or lately there are a lot of crazy-dancing heroines in dramaland lately? It's like a whole batch of them sprung up since YFAS.
The show I am looking forward to is Ji Sung and Hwang Jung Eum's upcoming multiple personality disorder drama. I looooved Secret and these two did a fantastic job with their characters and chemistry.

I've actually only seen Park Min Young in S.Scandal but she seems much more interesting in this. (Yes, I know, I'm lacking in my kdrama education....I can't even relate to all the City Hunter references people make in the comments for Healer). I take it I should skip A New Leaf then? Ha.
I think there's a crazy-dance heroine in all of us and the writers are finally understand that. I love it when the characters can show their light-hearted and goofy sides. There's been far too much "cool" happening.

Well, I only ever did see PMY in A New Leaf and it wasn't so much as the actress as it was the way her character was written. The drama itself isn't bad at all (even though I went on a hiatus watching it and never got back to finishing it). Dropped City Hunter after the first episode so I am a bit surprised to see so many references to that drama considering I like this much more.

I want to watch Blood because it really seems like a somewhat bloody mess, but who knows, it might be good?
Scholar Who Walks The Night (that vampire sageuk), and Cheese in the Trap (which is a beautiful psych/romance manhwa that is atypical) because both are unlikely to be a mess because they have existing storylines that are interesting, and for superficial reasons...because they have Park Hae Jin's name rumored around it, and I am determined to watch whatever he has in 2015 after he impressed me in Bad Guys. He may turn down both given how wanted he is but a girl can hope right? /crosses fingers
Ji Sung vs Hyun Bin's dramas, because it's Ji Sung vs Hyun Bin.

Oh and here it my Park Hae Jin confirmation I was looking for! Yes, he was fantastic in Bad Guys!! I also have a Korean friend (in Korea) who worked on set with him a while ago and had nothing but good things to say about him. Impressive actor and a good person? I'm in!! I'm voting for vampire saguek....mostl because I am not familiar with the manhwa and I can completely see him both in Josean garb as well as being an enthralling vamp.
Yeah I feel like everyone is not expecting much from Blood but is secretly hoping it will surprise them....or be so bad it's good. Cult hits are OK too.
And yes to Ji Sung & Hyun Bin. I'm not that intrigued by the plot descriptions tbh, but when they attract such talent well...I'm thinking there's probably more to it and that I'll just have to watch and find out what.

why thank you for validating my comments on Hae Jin! I've only really jumped on the kdrama ship at the end of the year so I've only watched him in Bad Guys, but apparently his performances in YFAS and DS, as well as previously in MDSY were not too shabby either even if they don't get much love. I personally hope that he takes CITT because I'm familiar with that, and the main character's role is one in which I only see him playing due to the two-faced nature of the character that is still likable if slightly unsettling. tbh I just need him in kdramaland 2015 headlining one drama, and I'll be very happy. he's a great actor with a good heart, what's there not to love? :)

hi how are you
contiued watching Mr Back and it is hilarious. I remember thinking when I first saw the title that it must be about someone with back problems or a really weird superpower... the actor looked like Grinch at first, but he has a way of charming you with his antiques. now I find this Grinch SO cute!
talking about misleading titles I thought Marriage No Dating was about a married couple and it would not interest me. but the Beaie Polls and the praise convinced me to check out and it is a lot more about personal growth and a balanced life. it is good. have you ever put aside adrma bc of misleading title or expected something totally different? When posters and trailer are weirdly misleadin too, it is possible to miss a little gem.

I can think specifically of a show I put aside because of a misleading title or premise....but I have definitely been hesitant because I couldn't figure out what a show was supposed to be like. One if things I do love about kdramas is their willingness to mash up different genres, however, it also leaves me a but baffled about the tine or direction of a lot of new shows. I really can only figure it out after watching a few episodes.

Show with misleading title/different expectations:
49 Days: at first I thought the premise is ridiculous to make someone in coma to wake up and live in another person's body in numbered days. I scoffed at my younger sis who watched that.. Happy OT everyone :)
It's been weeks that I managed to be on time or an OT and then I can't really contribute much bc I'm so drained (mostly emotionally^^) from Pinocchio :P Finished ep 12 just half an hour ago and damn this week was a tear fest :P I think I have none left^^ I can't wait for next week though with that cameo that awaits us =)
Otherwise I'm still immensly enjoying Misaeng! It is so good and I'm actually thinking of buying the OST bc it's awesome.
Mr Back is also still one of my faves and I love it that Joon is playing a normal role for once :D Though it breaks my heart that apparently he managed his schedule for the past two months alone despite still being signed under JTune... If what I read is right the company didn't bother to do anything for him after he revealed he wouldn't renew his contract -.- I'm actually really glad he dumped them even if it means no more MBLAQ as OT 5 T_T
King's Face is also on my watch list though I'm not on the OTP train there^^
Dr Frost is also fun to watch and Bad Guys final... I KNEW IT! All I wanted to do was hug Jung Moon all the time xD
Variety wise: 1 Night 2 Days has been so great with the specials (grandmas in the countryside + high school juniors), WGM RimKim couple is awesome as ever, sad that Tablo and Haru'll leave Superman Returns (but yay for Uhm Tae Woong taking over) and Running Man was also great those past weeks!
All that is left to say is that I wish all of you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS :)

Also I thought it was 16 episodes and therefore it wouldn't be too angst-y but then I read in the Punicchio thread that it's 20 episides. Where is it going to go for another 8 episodes?!? Oh dear... I go with the KBS World videos on youtube and they don't have numbers... It's the 3 countryside diary episodes and the game fo chance field trip (part one of that was half of the third countryside ep).
It's the 5 episodes before last week's (on KBS world).
If I count only S3 eps its eps 43-47.

BAD GUYS
Yes, I'm making a whole post about one show....spoilers abound. I realize there's a BG thread but I only finished last night and wanted to share my thoughts.
Wow! I can't believe this show is over, and it's definitely felt like more than 11 episodes. For me I ended up finding the plot to be a bit disappointing in the end, but the incredible acting really carried this show for me and I am so happy I jumped on board this show.
So disappointing plot: In a show that emphasizing the grey moral boundaries of every person and what makes someone good or bad...well, I thought prosecutor Oh was a bit 2D. Sure he has a background story but his actions were a bit stereotypically villain to me and not that believable. I think he also clearly was a suspect character from the minute he showed on screen and I would have preferred him to be there all along and for the audience to really wrestle with who was behind what. The back story of the serial murders was weak to me. How could the police have missed such a HUGE link between victims? The were all the loved one of jailed criminals? Hello giant flag! I also really don't see why he needed a psychopath to try and pin it on. And when Jung Moon didn't actually kill they decided to just keep drugging him so he'd be in the area? I also thought it odd that it was taking so long for Jung-Moon to be released. The real murderer confessed and the guy who bribed his gf and helped frame him also confessed and was in jail. Also, I just don't think Jung Moon is a psychopath. While he clearly did not have full emotions he certainly felt something and his resistance to actually murdering even in hypnosis makes him seem more like sociopath and psychopath. I think once again someone wanted to use psych terms but didn't do their research.
Amazingness: Oh those leads!!! I think they must be my favorite ensemble of the year. I do wish there was more bromance! However, I know that really wasn't the plot. I loved each and every actor and fully believed in their moments and backstories (although wtf Tae-Soo killed that woman's husband because he developed feelings for her? I thought it was going to be a job. And then he suddenly felt remorseful? That was too last minute). But those main four were just....wow, yeah. Lots of feels and I was captivated every moment they were on screen. So so good. I'm going to miss this show.

I loved this show for the acting but I also found the plot lacking ... quick question. I was watching it at my asian TV but the malware on that site scared even my usually impervious MacAir -- someone (Joanne I think) suggested Dark Smurf and I was wondering if she or anybody had had any issues with that site or is it pretty safe security-wise -- I haven't seen the last episode yet and it's killing me. But my drama computer is also my work computer and I'm a little leery after the experience with myasiantv.
My 2¢ -- I think it would have made a lot more sense for Tae-soo to have messed up a contract and killed the woman's husband by mistake. But that's just me.

I agree with the leads doing an excellent job. There were some holes in the plot, and this was more obvious in the last episode. Maybe the writers and the "Bad Guys" team deliberately left some detail for Season 2?
But nonetheless, it was a drama that I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.

They may have left some detail for a possible season 2 but some of it just felt rushed and not thought out....which was a little odd because I feel like the two episodes before felt a bit drawn out. I think they lost control of the pacing a bit.
I still really enjoyed it as well! I have some critiques but I was still sucked into the show the whole time. It did a lot for only having 11 episodes and a non-major network budget. The acting was just so impressive. I love them all. I really think I'll make a point of seeing whatever work they choose next because I enjoyed them all enormously.

Hello everyone!! Happy holiday to you all!
Dramas:
Pride and Prejudice: Is anyone still watching this and not find it boring? I dunno, for now I stop at ep 12 because the plot becomes too murky and not really interest me. What's the deal actually? It becomes very hard to follow the story. I still want to finish it for CJH and BJH though.
Pinocchio: Too many coincidences and noble idiocy in past 2 eps. I want to smack Dal Po because that's not how you should repay Choi's family kindness and understanding! Poor Grandpa, even though he already accepts Dal Po as his adopted son from long time ago. And the revenge on In Ha's Mom is a bit ridiculous for me. Geez, I really hope he and hyung can finally find peace for themselves and not seeking revenge. Writer-nim, please give us some happiness too!!
Healer: Another reporter drama, but with completely different tone and story. I LOVE this drama!! And not just because Ji Chang Wook in it. Yes, JCW plays major part for me loving this drama as Healer Seo Jung Hoo. His action scenes are really cool!! But other characters are nicely-written and well-acted. I'm really curious on Kim Moon Ho and his past with his evil hyung. (Is having evil hyung/mom some kind of requirement for reporter? At least in Pinocchio/Healer). And PMY and her antics... LOL... I can't stop laughing, girl knows to create funny scenes. So far all 3 leads are likeable. Whether or not they're interconnected, they're already awesome on their own. I can't wait to see them (and maybe working together) unveil the past mystery. Hope this drama won't disappoint me till the end!

I'm still loving the show though.
And Healer is great!

Yeah, I tend to not focus in a drama I watching if it's not interesting. Like you said, I miss some nuances because I don't understand several things. Like the one with Kim Jae Shik guy, who else has connections with him? I'm a bit lost at this one. And it's a bit too convenient when suddenly an old recording from several years ago popping as evidence just now.

I think some overarching person has been watching these things unfold and sees that a prosecutor is finally willing to go after this case and so is giving him the information he'll need to take down some major players.

I'm still watching too, but this week I realised that it had really become a show I have to give my full attention to in order to properly follow all of what's going on, especially the unspoken nuances in some of the conversations. (And when I finish an episode, I go over and read Odessa's uncaps to confirm that I've got the right idea about the various plot developments.) It's not one of those shows I can watch absent-mindedly while doing chores or something. For that reason I haven't watched episode 15 yet, because I haven't had to time to sit down and do so properly. Definitely not finding it boring though. And I think the plot is complex/tangled, especially the web of connections, but I wouldn't call it murky.

Agree with this. I'm actually enjoying the show more and more now because I'm realizing there's a lot more going on beneath the surface than I originally expected there to be and it's all being unveiled in a satisfying way for me. But it definitely takes me longer to digest and understand it. I actually think I like that it's challenging me in ways I didn't expect.

Oh I should find those recaps....it would be helpful!
I completely agree though about having to pay attention. I do like a show that makes me think though. And while there were a few rough episodes where I was bothered by all the "coincidences", it's gotten back on it's feet. I made the mistake of trying to watch one episode at work and I will never try to do that again. I will only watch at home with 100% of my focus. It's worth the effort though.

I don't find Pride and Prejudice boring at all! Yes it is not an easy watch and they didn't really allow the OTP to build up, but the mystery of murder and kidnapping is bringing me back to this show. More than OTP, I care about scenes between CJH and the chief prosecutor... they set the screen on fire! I hope CJH's star shines brightly after this show!
Pinocchio: I jumped on to this show quite recently. I had a hard time accepting a fake psychological condition. And the central conflict is very unbelievable. But the OTP looks good and the OST is amazing! LJS has done an excellent job, but I am still having a hard time suspending disbelief.
Healer: Too much of City Hunter deja vu. They even got the same actress! Every time I see PMY, I expect to see LMH! And I think the chemistry in city hunter was much better... here they feel more like besties. And the star reporter looks and feels a lot like LJW from Nine. In isolation the show is good. but I can't watch shows when they remind me of other shows. But again, excellent soundtrack!
Punch: Impressive opening! But is it going to be a melodrama? I run far far away from those!

P&P: Yeah I think the OTP is really just a small side plot. This show isn't really about them and I feel like it's mostly there because they think kdrama fans require it. I mean, it's fine, it's just kind of pointless to me right now.the
Pinocchio: I don't think I'd have as much trouble accepting the condition if it had been consistently defined. It's also the name of the show so you think it would remain the focal point but now it only pops up when convenient. It's more like "Truth & Lies". I like the acting in this show but I agree with the trouble suspending disbelief. There's too much in this show (beyond the Pinocchio) that doesn't feel real.
Healer: I didn't see City Hunter so I'm in the safe zone on that. Yeah, I can see the besties thing but it's early episodes yet. I lot of relationships have to build on things first. While I like them, I'm mostly just loving the characters individually right now. They all bring a smile to my face and I get excited when they're on screen.
I think my relative newbie-ness may be an asset.

Another person to add to the list still watching Pride & Prejudice. Its definitely one of the shows that I look forward to each week. In total agreement that it requires one to pay close attention or else you'll end up missing important plot connections & reveals.
What a great role for Choi Jin-Hyuk to end on before starting his military service.

I'm watching Pride and Prejudice for all the wrong(?) reasons: the omg so cute Channie, hot new noona killah (well, at least to me) Lee Tae Hwan, sexy Choi Jin Hyuk, the bromance and the cute secondary loveline. Choi Min Soo was good for the first couple of episodes, but I find his character too cryptic at times and my tired brain watching dramas late night just refuses to follow.

Lee Tae Hwan is definitely a noona killer. I was so embarrassed when I looked up his age after the first episodes (I'm 30)....but, um, yeah. Definitely noon killer. There are worse reason to like a show than the eye candy. At least you're admitting when you're watching it lol.
However, I do actually like the show for non eye candy reasons. I just recognize that the two man guys definitely add to it.

Hi all:
Been refreshing and refreshing this page because Iso want to share my current crack video. So...yeah... for those of us who totally love Lee Jun Ki -- here is Mr Man in all his thug-sexiness. I swear I must've watched this video nine times yesterday. So...enjoy: http://youtu.be/qoA4YX07UfM
As for dramas:
Misaeng: I'm totally jonesing for Geu-Rae and Exec Director to have a baduk game. That would be so intense...as Exec Director realizes who he's playing with. The stuff that makes us drama-lovers happy, right? As for kindergarten teacher, now that she knows where Geu Rae lives I bet she's buttering up Eomma. The girl is persistent.
Valid Love: I'm trying to figure out our adulteress. Am not sure what the writer is giving us. Is she supposed to be an aegyo queen, overworked, oppressed Candy, immature eternal chidlie artist, or imperfect girl with a short attention span and bad time management skills? So farshe's forgotten her paralyzed sis-in-law twice and has dropped someone else's laptop in the middle of a kiss and also mislaid it.
What's With This Family?: Yay, Kang Jae knows!!!! I'm totally riding this redemption arc. This promises to be a drama that will touch my heart forever...especially if Dad dies.
Punch: Oh my! Talk about another redemption arc I'll be anticipating. The question now is whether or not he'll start his redemption sooner rather than later.
We Got Married: So love Song JaeRim. I can lust after Mary's ICB a bit, can i? Cause I'm actually in lovewith Lee Soo Hyuk. So a tiny little side-crush doesn't matter.
Waiting for Modern Farmer to wind up now that it loks as if my second lead ship is sunk. That's one of the reasons I drop shows unfortuneately. Well, I never said I was mature.
Thanks to all the recappers.
Have a great weekend, all.

I think you are also trying to like her maybe? I don't think you need to in order to enjoy this show. Anyway, my take on her is different than yours, I can't really say I like her a lot but I feel she is different from our kdrama ladies and interesting and real. I don't feel any aegyo going on or Candiness. :) Overworked? Yes of course. Immature, yes a little. Imperfect, of course, perfect people don't exist. :)

I often hear Candy defined as an optimistic, cheerful heroine overcoming hard times who deserves her good fortune.
If you go with this definition, Valid Love's Il Ri certainly fits the definition of Candy.

I think there is much more to a Candy then just that though I'm no expert on them. :) For instance they work a lot because they are poor or have to pay some debt. Il Ri does it because she likes it and also to get away from the family and for not taking care of unni full time. Which Candy would admit to that?
If we go by the optimistic definition that alone I still don't think it fits because I think Il Ri's cheerfulness is often fake. It's just her way of dealing with the hardships but she doesn't really lie to herself about it.

December 19, 2014 at 7:44 AM
I agree with you Lixie, on all counts. I don't see Il Ri as a candy either, and I haven't seen much aegyo, if any, from her either. She does appear to be a bit absent-minded/careless, and I'm not sure if that is meant to be an intrinsic part of her character, or if it's supposed to show us the extent to which Carpenter Kim is turning her life and her head topsy-turvy. I think it's the latter, but I'm not certain.
CaroleMcDonnell
December 19, 2014 at 10:18 AM
And let's forget that EVERY Candy has her breaking point. The definition allows for that. The optimism goes on and on and on until the poor Candy breaks and weeps copious tears or becomes bitter.
Our heroine was totally a bit eccentric in the beginning. Which I liked. But I didn't like the "isn't she just cute?" aegyoisms going on. And I didn't like the cluelessness she had towards how her actions affected or might affect people. Teach is surrounded by rumors because of her, but does she care? And does the writer care? (Which was my big question) We were supposed to just accept all that as childlike quirkiness.
So now, X years after her marriage, she has been under the strain of guilt because Sis-in-law fainted and became a paralytic on the day after the honeymoon. She is stuck with taking care of her sick SIL also. She has no children. I'll accept that she has a lot going on in her life.
BUT!!!!! She obsesses over a guy to her paralyzed sister-in-law? Are we supposed to accept that she and her sister-in-law are so tight that her sister-in-law will forgive her for cheating on her? I will even accept that her sister-in-law is accepting of the adultery. But really??? Even if someone is accepting of that, should one really speak of one's moral adulerous treachery to one's husband's sister?
Again, she drops someone else's computer. She forgets her sister-in-law in the rain. TWICE. This is a very immature self-involved character.
And why? Because she has asthma and is therefore weak and needs to be taken care of? Because she is quirky and eccentric? Because she never had a chance to have sex with other guys...in order for her to truly grow up and not be emotionally stalled?
Who knows? Am waiting to see what the writer is doing. Cause right now it's like.... Whaaaaaaaaaat?
CaroleMcDonnell
December 19, 2014 at 9:54 AM
You're right. I'm tryng to like her. But even if I dislike her, it'll be good to study what the writer is up to. Heroine (?) did have a bad case of aegyo/artist eccentric free-spiritedness put into her personality. So I think there is aegyo. Even when she's an adult.
I think the issue of her being imperfect is probably it. Because Carpenter Hottie did ask her if she wanted to believe she was perfect. And i think he is the mouthpiece of the writer with that question. Will we excuse a perfect adultererss? Or an arty adulteress who is just too free-spirited to be tied down? Or an emotionally-wonky adulteress? I'm accepting of all these types...UNLESS the writer wants us to go with aegyo sweet souled adulteress. Because I don't want to have to deal with the ramifications of that premise. And I am not sure if the writer is giving us the character he thinks he is giving us. I just think there might be a disconnect. After all, there were several moments of cute music and I thought, "Dangit! This writer, this director, thinks adultery is cute! Oeteke!!!!!???"

I really have to disagree on the aegyo. My understanding of aegyo is that it's a certain kind of exaggerated juvenilising cuteness, baby voices, giggles and fluttering eyelashes and coquette-ishness; it's not just being cute or quirky, it's being cutesy, with a kind of performance of girly femininity. I don't think either high school or grown-up Il Ri shows a great deal of aegyo. Is it because we're understanding the term differently, do you think?

Thanks. :) That was my exact idea of aegyo and that is why I can't find it in Il Ri either. I guess the only character I find it lately is Yu rae in Pinocchio but she is really more comical than cute so not even her is a perfect example.
CaroleMcDonnell
December 20, 2014 at 8:18 AM
But from the moment we were introduced to her she has been given this "eccentric" aegyo "free-spirited" personality. She is presented as kind of a pure being who is "refreshing" and a bit of a stranger to the world. All her classmates comment on this. So then years pass and her marriage is perfect but the heroine "falls" in love with someone new and young. Notwithstanding that she seems to have ADD issues. Nottwithstanding that she has little impulse control who is led by her emotions...she is presented to us as a noble victim. She has a sick sister in law she takes care of. Her life is therefore "hard" (Candy territory for some reason) and up comes hottie carpenter to free this free spirit who is tied town by life. This is the thing that is so over-the-top for me as a viewer and a writer! Talk about manipulative front-loading reasons for us to pity her and excuse her. BUT if the writer is aware that she has created a character who is responsible for her own actions, I'll be okay with it. I just do not want to be pushed into seeing this character as a pure sweet free-spirited victim. Writer, show me some layers here! And don't ecuse your character...even if you're not judging her.
Because of Reasons
December 20, 2014 at 12:47 PM
With respect to aegyo, my main point was that aegyo and "free-spirited" don't mean the same thing. Aegyo doesn't mean "free-spirited" or "eccentric" or "refreshing" or "a stranger to the world" or "quirky". It doesn't even mean "sweet" exactly. I can agree that Il Ri is presented as eccentric and free-spirited and all that, but that doesn't constitute aegyo. I think I get the overall gist of what you're saying, but I believe you're mis-using the term aegyo to describe it.
I really enjoy reading your commentary on dramas, so it feels kind of strange to be in such strong disagreement with you on this one. What's been intriguing me about this drama so far is that, more than any other drama I've seen, I can't get a clear idea of how the writer wants me to feel about the characters; I really dig that ambiguity and I'm hoping it's intentional. But my worst fear about where it goes from here is that it turns out, as you describe, to be a very conventional story with a trite plot and cliched characterizations, that it turns out to be just... basic. I haven't seen any clear signs of that yet though, and I think the writer is better than that, so my fingers are crossed that it doesn't go that road. However, if it does, feel free to tell me "I told you so!"
Lixie
December 20, 2014 at 4:32 PM
I agree again with BoR, aegyo is something else, but she really is a bit eccentric and free spirited.
Her marriage is not presented as perfect, far from it, it's clear they still love each other but have many problems.
>Notwithstanding that she seems to have ADD issues.
I don't think she's that far yet. :) She did forget the notebook twice but that's not a big deal.
>she is presented to us as a noble victim
How? Just because of the sick sister? I think one of the strenghts of this show so far is exactly that they avoid that. She is overworked but she is also careless and selfish many times, I don't think she has ever been presented as a victim. If something bad happens to any bad character would you think the writer is trying to make us feel sorry for him or her? To make way for redemption? I don't. I feel no pity for her, only curiosity.
I really feel you're being stubborn about her Carole. :) She has asked to take care of unni, she thinks of her as hers and yet she is selfish enough to forget about her and to tell her about the affair, just like she were first and foremost her sister instead of the husband's. She is very complex for me. She has felt very little guilt about being interested in this guy. The writer doesn't need to show us this is wrong, I would hate a preachy tone, we are adults, we know how it goes. :)
Lixie
December 19, 2014 at 2:47 PM
I don't understand the question very well, why would we need to excuse her? Did she ask me to excuse her? Did the story? I don't think so, not until ep 5 at least. I think the reasons that led to her being interested in him are so many. None of this matter as far as any forgiveness is in question though so I can't really make this link.
I don't think she thinks herself perfect, she doesn't have enough pride, if anything she thinks less of herself than she probably should, at least until the affair. :) I do think she thinks herself stronger and more capable than she really is and that led her to take more responsability than she should have, the way she treats those inlaws like children for instance.
I'll pay attention to the music in ep 6 to see how it goes.

I'm okay with imperfect character. I'd like to think the writer is making her imperfect. I'm just not okay with writer thinking certain imperfections are perfections...or cute. An imperfection means the character has some issues and conflicts to work through or to acknowledge. So I'm ready for that. An imperfection doesn't mean, "look, this selfishness of hers is the cutest thing ever!" Who focuses on cleaning their cellphone and forgets their sick Unni? Who loses then breaks their friend's computer? Who doesn't care that the Teacher she has a crush on might get in trouble for having a "seeming" relationship with her? If she is really really like this, I can deal with her. But if the writer forgets that he has given her these issues...or if he excuses her selfishness...or if he praises her for it.... then I'll be worried.
And if he is saying ADD or ADHD is the cause of her problems and her adultery...he better be prepared to do that well.

How is this writer excusing or praising her faults? We can't say just because any bad character doesn't get punished that the writer is rewarding them or trying to send any kind of message. Like I said I'll try to find any way in the next ep the director or writer are showing her faults as something endearing.

@Lixie: I didn't say I was sure of anything yet. I said I was confused by this character. So far I am looking at the heroine neither fully judging nor fully praising her because I don't know where the writer is going. I'm waiting to see how the writer handles sick unni left in the rain, and how the writer deals with the llittle memory lapses our heroine keeps having toward other people's llives or property. Hey, if heroine has a brain tumor or has some issue, I'll be okay with it.
If the writer is a woman, then it's possible the writer will A) excuse the character in a bid to write "a heartfelt women's story" or B) lacerate the character judgmentally. I await whatever outcome with baited breath and much disconnect to the character right now.
But I WILL say that the cute music chosen for adultery is a bit too "easy" and too "let's make the viewer root for this heroine's soul-freeing adulterous love" so there better be a twist in this story somewhere.
Because of Reasons
December 19, 2014 at 4:27 PM
Hey, if heroine has a brain tumor or has some issue, I’ll be okay with it.
For some reason, this made me laugh. I still think that what we're supposed to take away from it all is that she's totally discombobulated by Carpenter Kim, but hypothetically speaking: suppose the heroine is just careless, forgetful and irresponsible, with neither a particular explanation given nor any attempt to excuse the behaviour? How would you feel about that? (I would hate a brain tumour, by the way. So melo!)
If the writer is a woman, then it’s possible the writer will A) excuse the character in a bid to write “a heartfelt women’s story” or B) lacerate the character judgmentally.
This puzzles me a bit. Why pinpoint these specific options? Aren't there any others? And why pinpoint them as possibilities available to a woman writer specifically? What would be the different options if the writer were a man?
You say that you're waiting to see what the writer is doing, but your comments read like you have certain expectations, or that you're kind of second-guessing where she's going to take the characters and whether or not you'll like it... And when you say that you are "looking at the heroine neither fully judging nor fully praising her because I don’t know where the writer is going", does that mean that you expect that by the end of the drama, the writer should have made it clear whether Il Ri is to be fully judged or fully praised? If that doesn't happen, would you be unsatisfied? It seems like a somewhat black-and-white approach to the material.
Based on what I've seen and read of the writer's previous work (My Name is Kim Sam Soon, What's Up Fox?, Me Too, Flower) I don't think she's likely to go for either "a heartfelt women's story" or a judgemental laceration of the character. I'm not getting a feel just yet of what she is going to go for, but that's one of the things that's gripping me about this drama, that and the fact that I don't know how the writer wants me to think and feel about the characters. So far I feel, if anything, like she's just letting us come to our own (varying, because I know plenty of people who love Carpenter Kim and think everything he does is wildly romantic) opinions and draw our own conclusions. I don't know how long she'll keep doing that, but for now, I'm really liking it.
(I haven't paid that much attention to the music so far, but I certainly will when I watch the next episode.)

The other characters have really had character arcs but he's pretty much been the same. This week has been awful - my husband had to go in for eye surgery (which turned out to be much more complicated, as they discovered he also had a retinal tear.) The day after his surgery, the youngest came down with a fever. Did I mention our holiday shopping isn't done? And the house is a wreck?
::sigh::
Have I had time to watch dramas? Not much. The only two I've watched this week are:
Misaeng: Wow. What a sketchy project that is. Honestly, I'd probably lay out all my concerns in an interoffice memo, and request that the Executive Director sign his approval for proceeding with the project. (That's a well-known CYA procedure, so if it blows up, you won't take the blame. CYA= Cover Your Ass.)
I laughed at Baek-Gi trying to wheedle his way onto Team 3, when he'd be just as ill-suited for Chief Oh's style. And I really felt for poor Young-yi, who is stuck between a rock and a hard place with her crappy Dad. What she needs is a good friend who can run interference for her and who doesn't have any desire to please Deadbeat Dad.
Bad Guys: I've only watched about half an hour of the finale (don't spoil me!) because my 9 year old is home sick, so I haven't had time. Tomorrow night I'll be able to stay up late & finish it. But what I have seen...oh, my gosh. I ::heart:: this show. I still wish I could have had another ten episodes of mystery-solving with our Scrappy Team of Misfits before it all blew up, but still.
Looking forward to:
Jekyll, Hyde, and Me: Looks like a great cast, and hopefully it'll be (mostly) light and funny.
Punch: I'm hoping to get caught up on this series soon.
K-drama moment:
I realized that I can now hear the difference between Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Thai - before, they all kind of sounded much the same, but now I'm finding myself being able to tell immediately (I still only know about two words in Chinese, maybe six in Japanese, and absolutely none in Thai, but it's neat that I can at least recognize the languages now!)

The girlchild appears to be much better, thank goodness. She is once again vibrating with the realization that presents are only a few days away!!!! OMG!
Hubby is better, though he is on an enormous regimen of eye drops and has to sleep sitting up.
On the other hand, I am freaking out because I don't have everything done & the other adult can't help out (I need to go grocery shopping, and I don't have gifts ready, and two packages haven't arrived and...::breathes::)
I'm hoping that my oldest (who's 21) can help out this weekend - I think she has off from work.
Hopefully, things are less hectic at your house. :)

Yes, deep breathing in between sips of wine and nibbles of ham!
We've got a pretty lax policy with Christmas, luckily - "anytime between Christmas Eve and New Years' Day" is our margin! But I do know the feeling of panic when the online prezzies haven't arrived!! And I have been known to *shhh* skip the wrapping altogether when time's tight (I keep a few pretty gift bags on hand, just in case)! Some supermarkets also cater for online shopping and delivery to your door, which is a blessing when you can't be in 10 places at once!
Hope it all works out, and have a great Christmas!

Well, we've got enough that the kids won't feel slighted, and that's the important part. The grownups can all deal; but Santa can't be late. :)
Today I have to buy groceries and stocking stuffers, and my husband's present, and my pseudo-daughter-in-law's present (they're not married, but they've been seriously dating for 2 or 3 years, so she might as well be our DIL.) Oh, and champagne for Christmas Eve. ::girds loins for the last-minute shopping::

I finally finished Bad Guys: Wow, that was a ride. While it didn't have the guts to go my (admittedly grim) route, it was still pretty grim.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
A few things stood out as stupid (wait, Nam calls Gu Tak and doesn't tell him who the murderer is? Better yet, he doesn't call the emergency line and finger his murderer? ::wtf face::
I was expecting Prosecutor Oh to admit that he falsified JM's personality inventory as part of the frame-up, but he didn't, so I guess that's just my personal head canon.
I sincerely hope there's a S2, with the Scrappy Team kicking butt and taking names. :)

Happy Friday!
Well, I'm back home and officially graduated (and yes, missing Japan quite terribly). But the extra time has allowed me to catch up on dramas...
Bad Guys: *anxiously waiting until I can watch episode 11* Aauggh poor, poor Psycho. :( *praying for the whole team to be back together by the end.*
Pinocchio: just hurts so good. The goodbyes, the hugs, the decisions, Grandpa and even Dad asking Dal Po to stay (and everyone crying), and more than anything the way the brothers look at each other with tears in their eyes. I get why Dal Po thinks he can't be happy while Hyung is suffering. He's wrong, but I understand why he feels that way, and I hope he realizes soon that it's not doing anyone any good. Things that did not make me cry: the quite satisfying (but yet unfinished) takedown of Mom, and Beom Jo being cute and sweet.
Healer: ooh, I like it. Thrilling, cool, poignant, fun, intriguing, and man, Ji Chang Wook is beautiful.
Running Man: I always realize just how much I miss this show when I come back from having been away from it for awhile. This was such a fun episode! And Kim Woo Bin's hero (or is it triumphant villain?) walk at the end was so, so cool.

Of course, saying goodbye to Japan meant saying goodbye to all of the flower boys on campus as well. (Not to mention everyone else.) there aren't many particular incidents that stand out in my memory from the last few days we were there, except for when I thanked my interpreter from Japanese Culture class for all his help, and he tried to say he hadn't really helped much. I did not let him make that claim--aside from interpreting every important piece of information and helping me communicate with my classmates, he probably did at least 1/3 of the work on my three-person (not including him) group's presentation. And he wasn't even getting any credit for the class.
On our last Saturday we went to Tokyo once more, and, wouldn't you know, we had a few flower boy encounters there, too! In Shin-Okubo (aka Koreatown) there's a Coffee Prince Cafe -- yes, named for the drama, and based on the same concept of flower boy workers (about which they were not lying). The guys working there were very nice too, and the one who took our order was so nervous about speaking English, his voice was shaking.
We had dinner at a restaurant there, and waited a long time, ineffectively trying to make eye contact, before we finally saw the button to call the servers over. Just when we were about finished, though, one server came over and tried to tell us something through gestures and a lot of words in Japanese. When that failed he ran off, probably to try to find someone who spoke a little more English, but we were finished by that point anyway, and we're fairly convinced he was trying to say that they needed our four-person table, so we decided to just go ahead and pay and leave. I just hope he didn't think he ran us off...
Then we had a not-so-welcome encounter with this guy who said hello to us in an upstairs kpop store and then proceeded to follow us very obviously around the store. And downstairs. And outside. And down the street. We lost him by dashing across a crosswalk right before the signal changed and ducking inside a another store.
All things considered, though, this semester was an incredible experience in so many ways. It cemented a love for Japan deep in my heart, and I really hope I can go back, sooner rather than later. I honestly think there's a good chance I could end up there for good someday (or at least for a very lengthy amount of time), but I guess we never know, do we?
Anyway. I'll stop rambling now. Have a great weekend everyone!

Watched this week:
Secret Door - I missed an episode this week, so I kind of have to catch up. ...... But I did watch the episode after the one I missed. Heh.
Cantabile Tomorrow - Down to just watching minutes of each episode. I'm thinking that when I have time I'll have to go back and watch complete episodes.
My Spring Days - Finally finished this one! ...... One of the few dramas where I wouldn't change a single thing. ...... Everything just worked.
That's it for now. ...... Everyone take care and have a great Friday and weekend!

I just went back to old DB posts to familiarize myself with the plot synopses of both and based on the synpopses alone, I'd probably choose, Hyde, Jekyll and Me. It sounds a bit quirkier--the amusement park, the circus troupe--and I like that there are just two personalities (or maybe three, the "Me" being the real one somewhere between super-nice and super-nasty). It sounds like it would be more playful and fun than Kill Me, Heal Me. Nothing about the plot of Kill Me, Heal Me really appeals to me. If I were to watch it, it would be mainly because of Ji Sung and Park Seo Joon.

I'm more attached to the cast of Kiss Me Heal Me but I'll probably fast forward through the potential mellow. Jekyll, Hide, and Me I just wanna see how the circus troupe and amusement park are handled. I might be disappointed though because a lot of rom-coms often forget that their characters are employed at some point. In a perfect world, both shows would go all out and be black comedies, that be the perfect way to both use and subvert the ethical boundaries and then it'd be a good WTF

It's a hard question,,,,...To be bluntly honest, though I watch Korean dramas, I do not have a particular actor whom I really love. Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy was just way too perfect. The director really wanted to cast him and took time to persuade him to take the part. The director was right, he did a brilliant job. Though there are some skilled Korean actors, no one can replace Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy in my opinion.

Season Greetings to Everyone!
Currently watching: Misaeng, Modern Farmer, Pride & Prejudice, Pinocchio, & Valid Love
Hope to check out Punch soon.
I certainly didn't think this would be the case, but I feel compelled to speak up on behalf of Joseon Gunman (aka The Chosun Shooter).
Considering what we know and how things turned/played out...I'm of the opinion that Lee Jun-Ki made the right decision in choosing Joseon Gunman as his 2014 kdrama project over the other "known" alternatives.
☑ Joseon Gunman
☒ Age of Feeling (aka Inspiring Generation)
☒ Angel Eyes
Context & in the (grand) scheme of things...
Is it as exciting, suspenseful, thrilling, and nail-biting in action like Two Weeks or Arang & The Magistrate? No! But, overall I still enjoyed it and appreciate the subject matter touched upon in the drama. To a certain extent it tried to shed light on and tackle slavery, indentured servitude, the never-ending quest freedom, a chance for/access to upward mobility, entrepreneurship, gender equality & inequality, idealism vs. reality of politics & governing, pros/cons of starting & participating in a Revolution, etc.]
JG was certainly not perfect; could border on being repetitive; and at times lacked intensity. In spite of that, overall its strengths (cinematography, nuanced villains, interweaving of history and the era with the drama’s characters & narrative, and strong performances by the actors) far outweigh its weaknesses (plodding and assured excitement week in and week out).
Joseon Gunman was Good Enough in my book and better than some of the other kdramas that aired this year.
Booyah! I am dropping the mic now. :)

Honestly, I thought he was great in Joseon Gunman, but I couldn't take all the crying. It needed more sexy-if-improbable rifle shots and fewer tears.
I'd have loved to have seen him in Bad Guys; he'd have been great as...well...just about any of the characters (except Woong Chul, because he is a skinny little reed instead of a mighty bull.)
I want him in another nail-biting thriller, myself. He was fantastic in Two Weeks, and I'm dying to see him in another similar project.

I'm a big fan of Lee Jun-ki, think he's a very good actor, and was looking forward to Joseon Gunman a lot. But I ended up dropping it after 10 or 11 episodes. I finally figured out the problem was with Lee Jun-ki himself. He was good in the role but he is now just too old, in his thirties, to play these kinds of these juvenile lead parts. I'd like to see him in a sophisticated and adult romantic comedy involving real heat and sexual tension along the lines of The City Hall or Couple or Trouble. Face it, he looks fantastic in a tuxedo!

Arang and the Magistrate and Two Weeks are my fave LJK dramas. I have yet to finish his Iljimae. He was gorgeous in the King and the Clown.
I think he would've been great in Night Watchman and Faith. I would've watched him in Triangle if he'd been in that, i think. Anything where we need to see a manly athletic guy. I'd like to see him in a comedy too. He might've been really good in You From Another Star.

When I'm alone at home I like to walk around saying insane things like, apples eat people.
Pride and Prejudice- I haven't seen episode 15 yet so maybe I'm missing the answer but I'm still confused about Moon Hee-man. They do a lot of work to make him seem evil, or perhaps it's more appropriate to say ambitious in a morally deficient way, and half the time I believe them but the other half I'm not so sure. I've seen comments where people think one of our tragic heroes will die but I personally think if anyone dies it will be Moon Hee-man.
Healer- so much fun
Punch- I loved the first week and can't wait for the second, even if Jung-hwan has a long, long way to go before I think he deserves to be redeemed or even can be.

I'm willing to say that Moon He Man protects those who need protecting the most. The critical cliff hanger where prosecutor arrests prosecutor, both who are very good at what they do, is a fabulous example of how evaluating hard evidence can sometimes lead to the wrong conclusion just as easily as the right one. Because I am sure that is not the right conclusion. I love all the characters and how the actors portray them in this kdrama.

I agree with Owl. Right now, I'm of the opinion that Moon He Man is probably not evil. Oh how I wish he really was one of the evil villains with sinister motives and not just someone keeping his cards close to the vest/chest.
If this was the case, it would really add another dimension to the drama.

Hey everybody...happy OT!!
I usually don't get the chance to post here early (~11am here)...but still surprising to see so many posts already!
Finally finished with final exams...so my first semester as a grad student has come to a close :) I'm just kicking myself for holding myself off of continuing my education...but at least I'm doing it now.
Now I can watch kdramas whenever I want, and post comments on time...for the next month! ;P
Pinocchio: Oof, yesterday's ep was a punch in the gut and I didn't think I'd be tearing up nearly half the time! Dal-po and Hyung moments, I figured I would...but poor Grampa :*( His sorrowful sobs were really gut-wrenching, and even In-ha's dad's gruff way of saying "don't leave" was tear-inducing :(( I understand why he's cutting ties, saying things he don't mean so that it'll make it "easier" - but he's only punishing himself for being able to live with and have a family that loved him back - unlike Hyung. I just wish he didn't have to break poor haraboji's heart in the process..what if this causes him to have more health probs, DP?! -.- But I do believe he's forcing himself away from the Choi family so that his resolve is hardened and he won't falter in pursuing his (and Hyung's) quest for revenge against Cha-ok. There should be someone there for DP to be the voice of reason (maybe Cap?) who should point out that getting bok-su may seem logical and may feel like doing so will right the wrongs, but you f*ck up yourself in the process by going into the dark side <- what I've seen in revenge dramas. I wholeheartedly agree that CO needs to be taken down, I just worry for DP.
Bad Guys: Well, damn. A whole lot of answers thrown into the mix in the finale, and I do hope there is a season 2. (And season 3 of Vampire Prosecutor too, pretty please?!) Although the story dragged a bit going into the finale, the finale didn't disappoint. Finally got the answer as to what Jung-moon was responsible for (nothing) and the evildoings of Prosecutor Oh coming to light. I knew the second he was introduced that he was up to no good, with his sniveling ways. What I absolutely loved from this was the bromance of Team Crazy Dogs - yeah, they absolutely had their moments of distrust and coming to blows but the teamwork and kickass-ness of the group made it worthwhile. Loved the quartet of actors for sure.
I'm definitely catching up on Healer, I'm halfway done with ep3. Also gonna marathon 1 Night 2 Days.
Have a great weekend and Merry Christmas yall :)

Seems life likes to get dicey around the holidys for me. Between hospital visits and funerals I'm beat. Hope everyone else's holidays are successful.
I'm only caught up on Valid Love right now, which is almost at cracktastic levels considering how I anticipate it and how episodes fly by.
@Carole (I was gonna put this on your thread but its too long and I wanted to talk about it anyway).
I'm actually having a harder time understanding our interloping sea anemone (aka LSH's Joon). First I will say two things: a)I keep forgetting he can act now usually people only mention his hotness but I find myself surprised at how well he's doing b) between now having a modicum of respect for him beyond his alien beauty and the rougher look about him I'm finally feeling the attraction beyond just getting why everyone else feeling him.It will probably be fleeting so I stake no claims.
Character wise though I'm still tryna see inside his head. I get the isolated, emotionally stunted man is intrigued by the effervescent whirlwind Il Ri, but then...If he's also going to be the man who sees she's tired and hurting and offer a shoulder to lean on, in both her moments of pain and desperation he merely looms over her.
The first time in shock and Idon'tknowwhattodoconfusion the second time he told her it was okay to cry and she did but he didn't reach out to her and hold her. He kinda smirked. If he was just being painted as the sexy I'm just playing around guy or artful gigolo, then that would have made sense or some other indication his heart is not fully engaged yet but it will be, then I would get it. But so far this show isn't giving slapdash cheater tropes to our characters so I'm not sure what to think.
So either we're seeing foreshadowing (that he won't be there to catch her from her highest fall) or the limits of LSH's talent or I'm missing something. In conclusion while I kinda like Joon he also makes me uncomfortable because
A)no please don't put potential weapons near sensitive areas, that's not hot. Because it might be s&m now but it won't be all fun and games when someone gets mad and uses it how they were(n't) intended to be wielded in the first place. B) If their intent is to make it look like he cares, her vulnerable moments should make him vulnerable too, why must he withholding-ly loom above her? Being playfully smirky in a less serious moment is normal (for a kdrama) but it stinks of a power imbalance otherwise, which I assumed her affair would subvert since she already has the much older husband she still calls teacher on the other hand (though to be fair she had the upper hand in flashback). Whew ok I'm done.

You're making me want to run to watch ep 6 which I haven't yet because I save eps of series I love to watch after the ones I hate but am determined to finish anyway. Is that crazy or is that crazy?
Since I have only watched until 5 I can only say I think LSH is doing a great job so far at portraying this isolated, emotionally stunted man like you said.

I am not certain about how the writer wants us to read and react to Carpenter Kim, and I feel like I am by far in the minority with this, but I dislike him intensely. I think he's a bad guy, and that he will be bad for Il Ri.
[SPOILERS AHEAD!!!]
I kind of got bad vibes from him from the moment he appeared on screen, but it was the hammer thing that put up a huge red flag for me. And then the "you can cry in front of me" scene positively enraged me. This is how I saw it: he says that she can cry in front of him, she doesn't want to, so he says some very cruel things to make her cry, and then kind of looks down at her and smirks and says, "See, you're crying. You can cry in front of me." I hated him so much at the moment, I was almost shaking with rage.
Also I've been thinking about what he said about the moment that he started to feel alive and hot and fluttery and whatever it was. It was the moment when Il Ri was, as a result of his intimidating behaviour, traumatized and vulnerable, possibly about to die, her life in his hands. That makes me extremely ill at ease, because it feels like what he's deeply drawn to about her is that element of weakness and powerlessness (and therefore his ability to exert power over her), which sounds like a recipe for an unhealthy relationship.
Other viewers have said that the things he said to her at the end of episode 6 were necessary, tough love, a way to get her to face up to how unhappy she is. The way I see it, he doesn't know her and her life well enough to be saying those kinds of things, and he didn't say them in anything at all like a loving way. As you said, he was very cold and withholding in that moment. I think that he is doing it, not because he loves her, but because he wants to possess and control her, and causing a rift between her and her family, making her feel like he's the only one who gets her and really cares for her. It feels like very dangerous behaviour to me.
I do like the way the writer is working with the idea that Il Ri has never loved or been with any other man apart from her husband, whom she fell in love with as a teenager. In a sense, even though she's a 30 year old woman, it's like what she's experiencing with Carpenter Kim is all the fluster and fantasy and turmoil of a teenaged crush. And, I think, the (sometimes) associated bad judgement.
Overall, I find Carpenter Kim to be a very unsympathetic character. But I can't pin down if that's what the writer was going for or not, and I'm waiting for future episodes to give me clarity on that.

You raise some very good points. I was also bothered by Kim Joon's words in those scenes, they definitely sound like something that would come out of an abuser's mouth.
He wants to win her over by making her think that she doesn't really have anyone out there who she should genuinely care about other than him. He wants to "sell" her happiness, as if the problems in her life cannot be resolved in any way other than to have him enter the picture.

I think you're on to something with the sinister aspects of Carpenter Kim's character. It's a pattern I've noticed with LSH's dramas this year; his characters are lonely and isolated, but it doesn't make them sympathetic. The dark aspect suits his hipster-Dracula looks. That said, the husband bores me to tears. I think Carpenter Kim's scenes with Il Ri--even the troubling ones--are what make this drama so addicting.

I think he was just content to see that she finally let it out. and I liked that he didn't held her or anything but only looking upon her, because his intention firstmost is for her to admit it herself of her suffering. If he had lent her his shoulder, people would say he took advantage of her weak moments anyway. When he told her she could cry in front of him, you could see sincerity and care in his expression, very subtle but still there. then he kept looking at her crying, without judgment or anything, he let her be because it's her moment of weakness, she has to overcome it herself. He'll always be there by her side. This is what kind of guy Joon is, not the usual nice or gentil second lead guy, he'd rather die alone than living deceiving himself. If you're unhappy you're unhappy, if you're tired, say it. People might judge and don't understand because you have everything that's supposed to make you happy but then only yourself know what actually makes your happiness. I'm not always aright with Joon ways of dealing things, but what made me like his character is when he's forced to put down his acts and reveal his true intentions. I like it when my characters have depth you know ^^,

I knew someone like Il Ri in high school: lively, pretty, talented, from a poor family with way too much responsibility at an early age, mothered everyone...and then married one of our (much older) teachers right out of high school in a move that shocked everyone, partly because she really wanted to get out of her family's house, but could not afford to go to college. She kept up the hyper-responsible act when she had kids and kept working, but she was also filled with barely disguised rage because she asserted that all of this was her choice when, in fact, her family and husband took advantage of her in many ways. Only many years later did she admit that she might have made a mistake, marrying her teacher to escape from unhappiness. In hindsight, I think she was probably suffering from pretty severe depression, yet, like Il Ri, she kept up a steady stream of chatter and activity to deflect anyone's attention from that. Maybe because of my experience with this friend,
I see Il Ri as someone like her. She had to assume adult responsibilities too early, she sacrificed for her sister and gave up (didn't even admit) her dream of being an artist by asserting that she REALLY wanted to be a house-painter (self-deception); she courted her teacher by exaggerated mothering; the marriage seemed like a happy alternative, but she immediately got saddled with almost impossible demands. She may try to do everything willingly, but we get to see how selfish and hurtful her family can be. Sure, she is enabling their selfishness through her own self-deception, although I like the fact that she talks back to them and tries to get her brother-in-law to be more responsible, but one of the reasons she keeps coming back to Kim Joon's place is because he just says right out loud what she FEELS when she is crouched in front of the washing machine with her secret bottle of soju. She has been building up to her finally outburst for a while now, and when she finally cries, she doesn't just weep tears, she screams with rage and frustration. It's one of the most honest utterances we've had from her since we met her (the others were when she described her embarrassment at her spells and when she said she didn't cry in front of anyone else). Instead of trying to judge her, I feel compassion for her because she is trying to do the right thing and it is killing her.

I saw the hammer scene as a couple of things:
2) He didn't trust himself to actually touch her.
3) He was intending to appear menacing and frighten her so she wouldn't return.
At the time of this scene he was already feeling attraction towards her and jealousy at the sight of her with her husband (even though he knew she was married). He'd made up his mind to send her packing any way possible to alleviate the burden of his desires. He knew she wasn't going to listen to his requests to stay away and if she continued coming to him, sooner or later, he'd cross the line.
There is a sexy factor to this scene in his controlled rage and barely contained desire for her, even if it is tempered by her terror of the situation.

I felt about this scene in the exact same way. The only inconsistency for me were the tears. Someone else would be fine but she had been painted as being almost fearless before so I didn't buy that she would be scared so quickly or believe for a second that he meant any real harm. Apart from that it was a very good scene for me.

Jumping in here because I saw that scene something like that, too. It wasn't supposed to be pretty - not sexy, not alluring, not twisted pleasure at all.
It was a desperate last ditch effort on his part to get the HELL out of his life.
If he had felt an inkling of attraction for her, since she came on so strong from the git-go, he wanted to stop it.
She came at him relentlessly - without realizing her impact on him - he didn't understand what she wanted from him.
Why did she keep coming back? Was she interested or not?
Why would a woman care so much about what he thought?
The thing is, he knew she was married and that she was as confused as he was about her why she was behaving like that.
Grabbing the hammer to threaten her was saying, "Yeah, I'm this kind of asshole, so stay away, Lady."
It would have worked, too, I think. He frightened her, and made her think twice about her motivations. Suddenly, you can see her ask and answer herself "I don't want him sexually, right? I am happily married, right? That wasn't what all this craziness on my part was about, right?"
So she panics and hyperventilates and shows even more vulnerability than Kim was ready to see. He didn't want to feel sympathetic towards her. He wanted this attention wanting, bored ahjumma, with her eye on him as a new plaything/torture victim to leave and never come back.
Instead, her situation moved him. Why did he affect her that strongly? How could something he did on a whim - grabbing the hammer going at her - be that dangerous?
It was both an "Ut-oh!" and "Hmmmm?!" moment.
I didn't know at that moment if he was going to be someone who was good for her or bad for her. I am still not sure.

I got the weirdest feeling when Carpenter Kim talked about his past fatherless life with his adoptive Grandfather. Maybe I'm watching too many dramas but all I could think is that Hubby's philandering dad is the father of both heroine's lovers. Probably not true but...wow! Wouldn't it be weird if he arrived in town because he wants to connect to his dad/bro?
Right now, hubby keeps saying horrible things about Carpenter Kim. I'm tempted to see it as cuckold anger...but is it possible that what hubby keeps saying is true? I think our hottie carpenter is a good guy and he is used to not caring for family because he had none. The only one he loved or who loved him was adoptive Grandfather. He's capable of understanding love. But...Question is: IS he capable of understanding family? Is he willing to drag heroine into his isolated life? IS heroine willing to drag him into family life?
I also have a feeling that LSH will get better at acting as the drama goes on. I can't see him as a bad guy right now. He did try to stop his attraction to her...out of respect for marriage, i guess. But then... now he doesn't care about that.
It looks as if we'll be dealing with love/family versus isolation. And what is family? And what should we give up for it? Will they heal each other...and at what cost? That orphan thing is gonna come back to haunt us, i think.

Ohhhh…what an interesting insight!! But yes, carpenter Kim does make me feel ill at ease. I didn't understand not hugging her either after ep 6. Especially after the words that Il Ri said, on how tired she really is. I even want to reach through my screen and hug her. I also couldn't understand Carp Kim's words as tough love. I think he was more bothered by the fact she will be leaving him again and taking care of her husband's family. I think his words had more selfish intention than about Il Ri.
That being said, one of my favorite scenes of this drama was when Il Ri hyperventilated into Carpenter Kim's hands. How her eyes looked and changes on her face from strained to soft was just really beautifully acted.

It was a good scene the hypervntilation scene but all I could think is..."uhm...so this is the adulterer as rescuer motif?" I do like rescuing males and our carpenter definitely got pulled in by the damsel's distress. But it made me a bit uncomfortable. I am so hoping we won't be manipulated into pitying the heroine therefore accepting her adultery. Pity is such an easy and manipulative emotion in fiction. It excuses most things.

Ooh. What a great thought!
Does the writer really want us to accept her adultery? To rationalize it? To forgive her?
I like that the questions get asked because it really is all about how WE view our own feelings on this subject not what the show says. We think we are talking about the characters in the story, but we are really only thinking about ourselves in her shoes.
Is she an adulteress? Yes. (Imma guess that she will be.)
Is adultery wrong? Yes, there are few societies that accept it.
Is it understandable that she broke her marriage vows?
Yes, sure, she is a human and humans are weak. The statistics show that infidelity happens some crazy high percentage in marriages.
Is adultery wrong anyway? Still, yes.
Do her family, in-laws, husband have to forgive her?
Only if they want to. I can't make anyone want to forgive anyone.
Do we (viewers) have to forgive her? THIS seems to be completely dependent on the question - Would we be willing to forgive ourselves?
I don't think that the writer will try to convince us it is right ever, because it isn't.

Finally watched ep 6 but it's not Friday anymore so I don't know if anyone will come back here. :)
@Because of Reasons and @museofmanymasks I guess we had a different way to understand that scene and C.Kim behavior.
He did smirk but it was because he got a confession out of her, it was a bonding moment, not because he was feeling superior or anything. When she did begin to yell and cry it was a breakdown moment and there is all that sexual tension and guilt it between them. He could not comfort her with a hug, at least if I was her I would not want a hug, not then, the most he could or should do was to stay there and not turn away allowing her to cry in front of someone else and acknowledge her frustration.

Yes, so many children. I don't understand how they can devote themselves to a life of destruction like that. And for what ultimate aim? If they slaughter everyone, there's no-one left to 'conquer', no-one left to build roads and buildings, heal the sick, run the economy - everything you need to build a peaceful and thriving country and culture. They don't care about their country or anyone but themselves.

Hey everyone! I haven't done an open thread in a while, so I thought I'd do it now.
I'm obsessed with Pinocchio! I think it's my favorite drama this year after Liar Game. I haven't followed many dramas this year, only getting into them in the last two or three months. Bad Guys was also good, but it's number three for me.
The last couple of days I've gone back to watching The Return of Superman. I love the parents, I love the kids, I love everything about this show. But, why does Jang Hyun-sung leave the show later on? I love him and his kids.

Hello everyone! I'm done with school and practicum for the first semester. Yay! I still do have work but no school means more time for dramas!
Sweden Laundry-Went in there knowing nothing but the premise. I don't know any of the actors so wasn't really expecting much. It is superrr cute though! Learning about life through laundry? Count me in! Too bad it's just one episode per week. :(
Also, I'm watching My name is Kim Sam Soon. I know. I've seen it on tv a few times before but never actually watched the whole thing. It's so awkward seeing Hyun Bin so young. Still handsome though! I just had to say that I like Kim Sun Ah's looks as Sam Soon compared to her skinny self now. It could just be me but she looks so much beautiful when she was doing Sam Soon.
My sister and I also marathoned Liar Game and finally understood the hype on Ha Woo Jin. I've read a few chapters of the manga before but stopped around the 3rd round coz the lead girl is annoyingly stupid. I felt the same way for the drama at first but eventually came to like it. The lead girl wasn;t so bad. Maybe I was just biased coz she's Song Jae Rim's wife. HAHAHA. I did enjoy it though.
I wanted to get into Maids but with all the accident and stuff, I don't want to get attached to the drama then they would decide to stop it all together. Too bad that those things happened. It seems like a very promising drama. RIP to the writer staff who died.
Anyway, Christmas is just a few days away. Enjoy the holidays~~!

I'm so pleasantly surprised by this drama. "Nice" heroines usually come with principles, etc intact. They just need a makeover and a Chaebol In Shining Armor™ to be "complete".
But here she wasn't nice from the start. Yes, she was a "doormat" to her family, but she wasn't perfect either. Hahaha.

Fortunately I started Sweden Laundry from almost the end. Watched Ep 4 then 5 and then backwards 3 to 1 and realised that if I had not done that, I would have hated the family too much to continue watching past Ep 2.
It is definitely easier to watch, knowing that family aren't as bad as appeared at first and that there's more than one suitable candidate for heroine's affections. I'm a sucker for noona romances... Team Illustrator for me!

Hi OT,
Watched this week: Secret Love Affair
Now watching (for a 2nd, but probably not the last, time): Secret Love Affair.
I might have skipped this because of the subject matter--and who hasn't watched the typical spiral downwards of this genre: adulterers meet, fall hard for each other, get discovered, fall harder, wring hands in guilt, repent while cringing in shame, and so forth--but choosing to watch it was one of the best accidental decisions I've made.
It's serious, thought-provoking material, yet fresh and oh-so-beautiful in its execution. If serious isn't your cup of tea, okay, leave it for when you're in the mood. But, well, don't leave it for too long!

second OT post. as for me and my drama watching plate...
Bad Guys: it's kind of like eating something really spicy? started off full of fire, then it went into a slow but satisfying burn, but it lingers for ages! one kickass show with acting that is through the roof, only brought down by some undercooked plot - but so satisfying.
Misaeng: Eating buckets of ice cream in different flavors because you just can't get enough...then regretting it because you just over ate without knowing it. that's how I feel about ep lengths right now, and the 90min finale. it is so good you don't really notice the length only after watching it, by which you are already in a puddle of feels.
Healer: This is like being served a dish that seems familiar yet new, and looks and tastes so goooooood. Because the leads are all yummy, the OTP is to die for, and experience shows in the writing and the acting. Yes, slightly tropey but who cares if it's good!
Dr Frost: Need to catch ep4, but it's still really breezy for me. I loved the webtoon though, and am sad that some of the aspects aren't carried over when they could be.

Did anyone see Seonam Girls' High School Investigators (aka Detectives of Seonam Girls’ High School)? It's wacko enough to be interesting, and so far I like the acting. Did creep me out much more than I anticipated, not so sure about that. But I do think it has potential.
I appreciate people's comments about Punch. I haven't started it yet.

Totally agree on the creepy. I told my husband about that aspect (the lollipop, ugh) and he was creeped out just hearing about it. That lollipop "motif" also plays into The Walking Dead this season.

Season's Greetings in advance, dear fellow Beanies!
It's been a tense and emotional week with the hostage crisis in Sydney. The cafe is less than 15 mins' walk from my place, I go to that cafe all the time. Several of my friends got caught in the same building or in nearby buildings during the siege - they were in lockdown and couldn't leave for hours. It ended with the brave sacrifice of the manager who stood up to the gunman, and a lawyer who died protecting her pregnant friend. It may not have been a terrorist attack, or made headlines around the world, but for a city with hardly any gun crime to speak of, it's been a big shock, and a tragedy that's hit close to home.
Right now, I'm just so thankful that my family and friends are well, and I sincerely wish all the Beanies a safe and festive holiday season with their loved ones! Hope 2015 is a happier year for everyone!

It may not have made headlines around the world but I can assure you that in the UK it most definitely was the main headline. Lots of analysis and live feeds. Tragic that there were deaths. Two heroes and one scumbag.

Thanks, guys! The city has really come together in a beautiful display of sympathy and solidarity since the events of the past week, including Pakistan.
It gives me faith that people really are wonderful - they just aren't given a chance to show it very often!

It did make headlines around the world. I'm in the U.S. and I heard about it. It is tragic for anyone to hear about it, but I am sure it is much worse for those who are living close.

Happy Holidays OT'ers!
As always, late to the OT, but still grateful to have like-minded Kdrama addicts to share with. My kdrama viewing has been limited to one-drama-at-a-time due to the demands of work and life. Therefore, it has been very helpful to read your comments about current dramas, sparing me the pain of wasting my time on the undeserving (aka God's Gift). Coming off of Yoona's Street a month ago, I was a bit at loose ends, and had one of those moments where an angel sits on one shoulder whispering "finish painting the house" and the devil on the other saying "No, watch Kdrama; You know you want to." So, of course I finally gave in, and started Misaeng, and oh, am I glad that I did. Not only does it have my favorite actor from Miss Korea, but the writing is sooo good, and so different from any other drama I've seen. I'm only on ep.12, but am grateful it hasn't fallen into any of the standard tropes, and doesn't look like it will. Thanks Beanies for the recommendations, and thanks Dramabeans for recapping it.

Hi newgirl! Glad to hear you've joined the Misaeng circle. If you had to pick one Kdrama now, this is it. You may want to get in line with the many of us here who want to marry Chief Oh, played by your fav Lee Sung-Min. Seriously, I want to marry that man.

Yes. Misaeng is the best drama for this year in my opinion, and I watched really a lot of other dramas this year before coming to this conclusion.
Just finished watching episode 19 and I feel so spent crying and now really wishing that this won't end soon, but alas there's only 1 episode left. I'm gonna miss Sales Team 3 a lot.. and all the newbies.. This drama has so much hearts that I think I'll remember for a very long time.

I have only watched 3 episodes of Misaeng so far. To be honest, I am struggling with it. The first 2 episodes were so unrelentingly depressing that I almost abandoned it. However, following all the positive reviews, I decided to watch episode 3. That was a bit better, but it is still not grabbing me. I am not sure if it is for me. Korean dramas are my escape from my mundane day to day life, and Misaeng feels a little too close to my work life to be an enjoyable watch. I will give it another episode, but unless I see an improvement, I'm out.

I think I would feel the same way if I worked in a similar situation. I work in a hospital, and cannot stand to watch medical based dramas. Either I find so much wrong with the script that it's unbelievable, or it's too realistic and makes me feel like I'm right back at work.
At my job, people pretend to be kind, caring individuals, but are really the opposite, whereas in Misaeng, many characters are really good hearted people pretending to be badasses. So Misaeng is an escape for me. Stick with it if you can!

I've just finished watching Misaeng ep 20 just now and ... oh dear, how much I cried and laughed in 1 episode. This drama is no doubt the best drama of the year, and an instant favorite of all time for me (the only one, after Shut Up Flower Boyband).
Can't wait for season 2!
