Healer: Episode 8
by javabeans
It’s a good thing I write these recaps as I watch the episode and not after already watching it through, because otherwise today’s recap would just be pictures and unintelligible vowel sounds. Like urrrrrrr and eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. I’m sure that would’ve been entertaining for all of two seconds before you needed to know exactly what happened to asplode my lingual skills. So without further ado…

EPISODE 8 RECAP
Myung-hee’s unexpected run-in with Jung-hoo occupies her thoughts afterward, and we see the encounter play out from her perspective. This time when the Healer steps out of the study, he actually bears her friend Joon-seok’s face and she calls out his name in surprise. But her vision of Joon-seok’s face is replaced with Jung-hoo’s actual one, and she drops his sleeve at the realization. Similar, but different.
Still, she tries to follow when he hurries away, although Moon-shik holds her back. As her knee-jerk reaction fades, she remembers that her friend has been dead twenty years and can’t be the person she saw, assuming that her mind was playing tricks on her. Moon-shik, however, carefully files away this information about the uncanny resemblance.
Moon-shik calls the Healer a burglar and Myung-hee decides that her confusion was her mistake, since she didn’t get a good look at the face after all. But the reminder of Joon-seok spurs the desire to get in touch with his widow, and she asks her husband to look into it. Moon-shik cautions that she might not want the reminder, but Myung-hee persists.
Moon-shik casually-but-not-casually mentions their son, and Myung-hee supplies him with the name and age (28, a month older than Ji-an), and another piece seems to click into place in his brain. It is a scary-smart brain.
The grounds crawl with security guards who completely miss the shadowy Healer perched up in a tree. I know the Healer’s the best in the industry, but the SS goons hardly make that look like an accomplishment. Jung-hoo is too intrigued to leave, watching Myung-hee at her window as he puts in a call to Min-ja.
Jung-hoo guesses that the reason Min-ja and Teacher wanted him out of the country was because of this connection between Myung-hee and his father. He gives Min-ja a long moment to explain why, and when the line remains silent, he says that he’ll have to find out for himself then.
But just as he’s about to head back, his Teacher’s voice comes over the line, stopping him short. He provides just enough information about Myung-hee’s identity to prevent him from going off like a hothead, and directs Jung-hoo to a meeting spot.
Jung-hoo drives furiously and arrives at the riverbank, where he thinks back to being eight: “After my mother left, I’ve never cried because of a person. I didn’t hope for anything from another person either. What I hate most in this world is a person’s understanding and interest.”
This flashes him back to his schoolboy years, when he’s punished at school for fighting with other boys. His teacher clucks over his constant troublemaking but asks the counselor for her understanding and interest, since Jung-hoo has no parents. He sits there enduring his teacher’s pity and his classmates’ ridicule as it’s explained that his father killed himself and his mother left.
When Jung-hoo returns to class, word has spread. Worse than ridicule is pity, and when a classmate tells the others to go easy on Jung-hoo, it only sparks more rage.
His phone rings with a call from Young-shin, who pelts him with questions and concern: Was he tracking down bars all night? Did he sleep? Why isn’t he picking up his calls? She picks up on his down mood, then asks him to pick either east or west. She received information yesterday that she ought to report to Moon-ho, but isn’t sure how much to reveal, so she’ll decide randomly. Hence: east or west?
She doesn’t leave room for Jung-hoo to protest, so he arbitrarily picks east and tries to get in a few words—difficult, when he’s not supposed to know what her info’s about. But she just tells him to eat breakfast and come in late if he needs to.
He thinks again, “What I hate most in the world is understanding and interest. Or, I used to.”
While Young-shin waits for Moon-ho to arrive at work, she mulls over her dilemma. She remembers advice she’d once been told about trusting other people, and how you shouldn’t automatically mistrust the 49 people out of 50 who are trustworthy, just because one isn’t. And yet… there’s the Healer’s warning to be wary of people who approach her with nice gestures.
She’s there when Moon-ho’s broadcast hoobae, Jong-soo, arrives to play out his role of spy. He presents himself as a close associate of Moon-ho’s, so Young-shin asks what kind of person Moon-ho is. Jong-soo agrees to tell her, if she’ll tell him all about this Chae Young-shin person, who may be the reason for Moon-ho’s move to Someday.
Young-shin’s face goes through a hilarious series of reactions to Jong-soo’s questions, which have less to do with her character and much more to do with whether she’s fresh-faced or sweet or stacked. Just then Moon-ho arrives and calls her name (Jong-soo starts in embarrassment), steering her aside for a report on her latest findings.
Young-shin plays President Hwang’s room-salon footage for Moon-ho and Editor Jang, which contains over 200 hours of video of various important men being drunk and sleazy with Hwang’s stable of actresses. But naturally they want to know where she got her hands on this evidence, and she fumbles for an answer before settling on the truth.
She reveals that her informant is someone she’s been researching for a very long time, and that it took a lot of effort to manage a rendezvous. However, she’s frank about her misgivings in trusting Moon-ho with this, since she’s not sure he won’t claim her work. Therefore, she asks that he entrust her with handling contact with the source.
Moon-ho promises readily, and asks who it is. She asks if he knows what a night courier is, and names one such messenger called the Healer. Moon-ho confirms that he’s heard of the guy.
Jung-hoo comes rushing into the office to report to the boss, but Jong-soo blocks him and insists there’s a meeting going on. Jung-hoo pulls a feint—again, mixing Bong-soo-like clumsiness with Healer’s slick moves to whirl around Jong-soo and barge in anyway.
He announces that he’s found Hwang’s favorite room salon, Luna Moon, acting like he spent all night pounding the pavement instead of just beating the info out of Hwang.
As he’s talking, Young-shin sees the pop-up notification on Moon-ho’s computer: email from the Healer. She looks at him in shock, and Moon-ho asks the others to leave them to some privacy. Jung-hoo purposely drops papers that give him an excuse to plant a bug underneath the table, then is ushered out by the editor.
Young-shin eyes Moon-shin with a fresh wave of distrust: Why would Healer be emailing Moon-ho? Via the bug, Jung-hoo listens in on the conversation as Young-shin asks Moon-ho whether he hired the Healer, and what he requested. He’s got Min-ja on the other line, who sent the email at his instructions, since he wanted clarification about why Moon-ho wanted Young-shin protected.
Moon-ho admits that he hired the Healer but declines to answer why, turning the conversation into an interviewing critique—she’s approaching him all wrong. She asks if he asked the Healer to save her from gangsters, and to take her DNA sample. She can’t understand his reasons, neither can she just drop it and accept non-answers.
Despite picking at her interviewing flaws, Moon-ho decides to answer her initial question about why he came to Someday. He says he wanted to set up his own outlet and ran background checks on every employee, not just her. After all, she’ll be a journalistic “human shield” for him, so he has to make sure she’s in good shape.
Stated like that it sounds so simple, and it gets him off the hook for every question minus the one he can’t answer about her DNA, which he baldly denies. Young-shin is hit with a wave of disappointment and embarrassment, and says that her exchange with the Healer yesterday now “makes me want to die.”
At that, we split-screen to show Jung-hoo’s face reacting to her mortification (agh, so good) as she thinks of his warning not to trust too readily. She cuts herself off before admitting that much to Moon-ho, though he’s more interested in the tidbit about her meeting the Healer yesterday. Did she see his face?
She replies, “If I’d seen it, I would know just how pitifully he regarded me.”
Moon-shik receives confirmation that Young-shin was found at the age of five and bounced from family to family for a while, and was finally adopted at eight. She was found behind a trash can in a Seoul alleyway, and was thought to have a speech disability because she refused to talk.
The report badly shakes Moon-shik’s composure, and he thinks back to the aftermath of that accident. Badly injured and lying in a hospital bed, Myung-hee begs him to find Ji-an for her. He inquires at the police station, where a report confirms that a child was found hiding behind a trash can, and that takes him to the orphanage.
Sobbing Ji-an runs to hug him, and Moon-shik comforts her wearing a heavy expression. You can see the wheels already turning in his head….
As Moon-shik recalls this, he starts breathing heavily and then hears a voice asking, “Why did you do it?” He sees his old friend Joon-seok in the room, chiding him: “If you were gonna be torn up about it forever, you should’ve just brought her home.” Ooh, is he turning all Macbeth on us now?
He tries to ignore his conscience-specter, but Joon-seok persists, asking if he thought Ji-an’s survival would keep Myung-hee bound to her dead husband. He looks like he wants to defend himself, but every time he tries to speak up, Joon-seok disappears.
And then another voice asks, “Why did you do it?” This time it’s Gil-han, Myung-hee’s first husband, reminding him, “We were friends.” He advances on Moon-shik with that look of betrayal on his face, and Moon-shik shrinks back in fear. “Friends shouldn’t do that,” Gil-han says.
And upping the creep factor even more, we see the secretary watching intently from the doorway, noting Moon-shik’s erratic behavior and reporting it straightaway to the Elder. He explains about the brothers being interested in the child lost in 1992, and that Moon-ho appears to have already approached her.
The Elder calls Moon-shik “top class” among all the people he’s developed, knowing his place without being servile, and when to advance and when to retreat. “But you see,” he adds, “Moon-shik has exactly one weakness. That daughter.” She has the capability to turn him into a balloon doll—one of those dancing balloons you put in front of stores. One needle is all it takes to pop it: “And we can’t let that happen to Moon-shik.”
The secretary understands what he means, and agrees to send Moon-ho a clear warning without Moon-shik knowing.
Moon-ho replies to the Healer’s request for information, advising him to be particularly wary of Secretary Oh. He also adds the order for the Healer to not contact Young-shin personally.
Then he assigns Young-shin and Jung-hoo (dude, couple sweaters!) to interview Yeon-hee and asks for a detective to whom they can submit the evidence, so as to prevent the other side from obstructing the case. Young-shin knows of one such character, having run into Investigator Yoon while staking out Hwang.
Then Moon-ho introduces his buddy to the team, and Editor Jang is still unable to understand why these elites would choose to come here. Moon-ho prods Jong-soo to tell them what he’d confessed earlier: that he came to spy for Moon-shik. Aw, so he couldn’t backstab his sunbae after all! I wanted to be able to keep liking him, and now I’m glad I can.
Young-shin gripes about Moon-ho on the car ride over to the interview, asking if it’s so hard for him to praise her a little for staying up all night researching. All that work catches up to her and she nods off in her seat, and as her head starts to fall, Jung-hoo carefully reaches over to prop it up with his hand.
He drives like that all the way to Young-shin’s house, where he finds weird gangster-looking ajusshis hanging about. He’s just about to back away before they’re seen, but Young-shin awakes and lights up, darting out to greet her ex-con ajusshi uncles. The mood is adorably energetic as they fawn over her, until grumpy Dad shoos them away for scaring off his customers. Jung-hoo watches this all with bemusement that gradually turns to amusement.
Over at the SS office, Sang-soo assures Secretary Oh that he and his team are up to the task. Then he gives his guys an hour to accomplish their goal, and they get to work manipulating a voice clip taken from Moon-ho’s news broadcast.
Dad again asks Yeon-hee if she’s okay to go through with the interview, even if her face will be pixelated onscreen. He knows how the other side’s attorney will attack, and giving an interview could have adverse effects on her. But Yeon-hee remains firm, reminding him that she isn’t concerned with preserving her reputation; all she wants is to take them down.
Dad asks for some time to discuss things with Yeon-hee before giving the interview, and they step aside. Young-shin asks Jung-hoo if he can handle the camera equipment, and he meekly just says he’s sure it’ll work out. Ha. He surreptitiously links in to Min-ja, who adds that his father was reportedly a whiz with machines too.
She reads him Moon-ho’s reply email, including that addendum about not making personal contact with Young-shin. I think we all know Healer well enough by now to see that this is exactly the kind of thing to spur his rebellious streak, and he just scoffs.
Young-shin leans over to examine the camera setup, and as she looks at the equipment, he looks over at her. He reaches out with a finger, and she looks at him in puzzlement as he lightly touches her forehead. “What are you doing?” she asks. “Contact,” he replies. “Personal contact.” LOL. He is such a teenager sometimes.
Min-ja practically rolls her eyes, then mentions the Teacher asking a strange question earlier about whether he preferred fruit or chocolate. Is it some kind of a code? But Jung-hoo has no clue.
Young-shin puts on a record and starts mugging for the camera, which confuses Jung-hoo. She tells him to let it go because she’s in a heavy mood, all while sending funny faces at the camera. Then she assumes a serious journalist’s mien as she runs through a mic test, mock-reporting: “Hello everyone. You are looking at a woman who has been rejected by her Crushes 1 and 2 simultaneously, who is here with clear mind to report all the same.”
Jung-hoo’s expression sharpens as he registers this. She continues: “Number 1 called this woman a human shield, and Number 2 thinks of her as a delusional attention seeker. However, let us forget this readily. Like a sad dream conjured in the middle of the night, which goes like darkness at the light of dawn. Let us forget. Let us pretend it never happen—”
She stumbles before finishing. Jung-hoo looks up at her with those eyes (those eyes), and she blinks back tears and chatters quickly about the weather.
The interview begins, and Yeon-hee names names and tells her story frankly. Young-shin starts light and increases the pressure, asking if she went along to entertain the assemblyman because she thought she’d be rewarded with favors later. It’s a little strong, so she backs off and moves on, but Yeon-hee answers anyway, saying that Young-shin doesn’t know the fear so she can talk about it so easily. She says that those people are capable of doing anything to protect their interests.
Secretary Oh confirms that whatever scheme he’s put the SS team on, it’s ready to go.
Meanwhile, Jung-hoo finally gets a call from his Teacher, who asks if he prefers chocolate or sweet potatoes. He tells him to go home immediately if he wants to meet, because Teacher’s only waiting five minutes. Jung-hoo’s exit is stopped by ajusshi, who tells him to take lunch with him, and a glimpse at the pastry case jars Jung-hoo’s memory—it’s his birthday. So that’s what Old Fogey Teacher was rattling on about?
Moon-ho calls Young-shin to the office, because an informant has surfaced. She heads out immediately, following his directions to a particular location… and we see that this is the SS tech team’s doing. Gack, they’ve doctored Moon-ho’s voice using his broadcasts, and she’s none the wiser. Fake Moon-ho directs her to turn off her phone as well, to evade potential tracking, and she complies.
Then the real Moon-ho gets a call from an unknown number. It’s a random schoolboy, who reads a note provided by Secretary Oh warning him not to forget that he owes the family who raised him, and that he cannot throw it away over one bad woman, and that his family is awaiting his return.
Alarmed, Moon-ho tries calling Young-shin and gets no reply. So he sends Healer an email outlining the details, and Jung-hoo screeches the car to a halt and orders ajumma to locate Young-shin via the tracker in her bag. He hears the direction and zooms off in a hurry. So does Moon-ho.
Secretary Oh prepares the next phase of his eeeevil plan by entering a building dressed as a construction worker, and starts to tamper with some kind of machinery. That’s the building Young-shin arrives at, although the front doors are locked. That forces her to go around to find an open door, and she enters cautiously, looking for Moon-ho.
She finds the one elevator that will work—the one that Secretary Oh has just messed with. She steps inside, and the elevator begins its ascent. Once it’s in motion, Secretary Oh opens the cable box and snips a wire.
Suddenly, the elevator jolts and clangs to a stop, while the lights flicker off. Then, it starts to free-fall—with nine stories between her and death. The elevator stops after a short drop, but it doesn’t look like it’ll hold for long.
Driving like a maniac, Jung-hoo arrives at the building and heads inside the same way. He hears the elevator gears as it begins a second fall, running in that direction as it catches a second time. He bangs on the doors at the bottom and she hears it, screaming out for help.
Jung-hoo starts running up the staircase, and Secretary Oh, who’s heading down, hears the approach with enough time to duck aside.
Young-shin fights to tamp down her mounting panic, but she can feel the precarious hold on the elevator and starts to hyperventilate. Jung-hoo arrives on the rooftop and quickly clips emergency cords in place, wearing one end as a harness, and runs to the elevator shaft.
Opening the doors manually, he sees the car stuck halfway down and leaps into the shaft, guided by the cables, and lands atop the car with a thud that makes Young-shin scream.
He opens the door and drops into the elevator next to her, just as the last of the cables give way and start snapping. He quickly pulls her cap down over her eyes and belts her into the harness, then grabs hold of her with one arm and the cable with the other.
The elevator begins its final plummet, literally falling away around them as they are pulled upward.
Jung-hoo assists Young-shin onto the rooftop, but once they’re there she flings off his arm angrily. Aw, she’s still embarrassed.
She yells at him for risking his life, and then says in a wavering voice that she’s grateful for his help, “But if we fell together, we would have both died!” More to the point, he would have died, and just because of her.
Her eyes still covered, she asks if he’s still here and reaches out a hand just as she did the other day. He steps back before she makes contact but she figures he’s still around and says that even though Moon-ho paid him for his work, she doesn’t have the money to pay him back for saving her life. “I’m sorry,” she says quietly. “Thank you.”
Without saying anything, he drops her bag at her feet and starts walking away. But he stops after a few steps, registering the snow that’s started to fall.
His voiceover repeats earlier sentiments: “After becoming alone, up till now, I haven’t wished for anything from another person. And so, I was fine.”
Below, Moon-ho arrives outside the building and heads inside. Jung-hoo continues: “I didn’t care at all whether anyone understood or misunderstood me. I was like that.”
But past tense is past tense, and he suddenly whirls around, walking purposely toward Young-shin. He pulls off his gloves and folds up her hat, just enough to see the bottom half of her face. He stops short of her eyes… and leans in… and kisses her.
COMMENTS
I’m sorry, am I supposed to write comments and make sense after that? Surely you don’t expect me to be useful at this point, do you? Not when all I want to do is rewind the last ten minutes and watch it fifty times?
Okay, fine, let’s be professional and all that. Pull it together, ‘beans.
Let’s start with the older generation, whose layers continue to be peeled back one by one—yet again, deft handling by the writing here. It’s difficult to maintain mystery without being too cryptic on one hand, or revealing too much and flattening out the tension on the other. So I’m content to see each character introduced in stages, so that we get to see how they fit into the larger picture by degrees. Obviously Jung-hoo’s father was a victim and not the aggressor, but I’m still curious to know exactly how the betrayal went, and in what order.
Despite Moon-shik being a pretty clear villain, I like that he doesn’t seem to be a black-and-white sort of guy. Yes, he’s guilty as sin: If he didn’t outright kill his friends, he still bore responsibility for their demises, not to mention the present-day hits he’s ordering as a part of his clean-up job. His hands are unclean and bloodstained, and he doesn’t seem all too torn up about killing Go Sung-chul, for instance. But I don’t want him to be this flat mastermind whose life was consumed by an obsessive love for a woman he had to have. That’s too simple and I don’t buy it, and I don’t think the show means to take that route either.
I’d rather see Moon-shik as a tragic figure—the guy who had every capacity to be a hero, but made every bad choice. I don’t think redemption has to be in his cards, but his complexity is what I find fascinating about him—I don’t care when he’s smug and in perfect control, but I do feel sucked in when he hallucinates his friends and actually seems afraid. I want to see him come to an understanding that he was completely wrong, and I want to have him wish for his soul, only to realize he’s already sold it.
As for the romance, I’m trying to pinpoint what about Jung-hoo and Young-shin make it so exciting and giddy-making, because its parts alone don’t explain it—we’ve seen these elements time and time again, and in some dramas I find them trite and unmoving, while in others I’m squealing at my screen and hugging myself.
I always love when the romantic journey plays off other elements of the story, and Healer gives us that. This isn’t to say a pure romantic storyline wouldn’t work well, but things are always more fun when you add layers and faces and dimension. (A single light may shine, but there’s something extra satisfying about holding up a gem to the light and finding unexpected glints coming through from other facets.)
Both Jung-hoo and Young-shin have some growing up to do on their own, and their connection is more like a collective group of smaller connections. They’re friends, colleagues, fellow survivors of abandonment—and then there’s the extra connection they don’t even know about, with regard to their childhoods. Jung-hoo has voiced the same sentiment a few times now, that he used to feel a certain way, and is starting to change his mind about them.
I don’t get the sense that it’s as simple as “I like her so I feel differently,” but that the things he can’t abide in other people don’t apply to her, because she’s a kindred spirit. When somebody comes at him from a certain perspective, he has a tendency to dig in his heels and rebel, as we see with Min-ja and Teacher. But when that person is seeing things through your own eyes, whether you mean for them to see that or not, you can’t have the same response, because now their view is your view. Sometimes that’s all it takes.

Ji Chang Wook is such a treat to the eyes (well, at least to my eyes)!
By the way, does anyone think that he is the perfect mix between lee minho and jyj jae jong? Like in some angles he resembles lee minho and in others he looks like jae jong. I feel like lee minho looks too masculine (in comparision too chang wook and jae jong) and jae jong looks too feminine while ji jang wook is the perfect balance between both looks. He's like the lee minho without the weird nose and the jae jong without the cartoonish face (but in my opinion all both are gorgeous too).
Anyway did anyone else notice how it says 'doble s guard' infront of the double s guard building? Ha. I wonder if that was done intentionally to show how stupid sang soon was (although the voice manipulating thing was really smart, but then wasn't that the secretary's idea, anyway to do that would probably require pretty high tecs, but don't they have a team full of high tecs engineer from china?)

Thanks so much for the recap javabeans!!! Fell in love with this drama after the first few episodes and probably because of Jung hoo. I loved that kiss and the conflict that led up to it but I do have to admit that I am not liking how long its taking Yong shin to find out who he is... I dont know I feel like the romance would be meatier if she knew but played along to protect him. Also, as amazing as Healer is I find myself doubting her investment in the romance. She barely knows this guy except that he saved her and protected her and gives lots of hugs. She does owe him her life but I dont know how I feel about the romance being based on her daydreams about a guy constantly saving her even though she anything about him and has barely talked to him.

Hmmm... at the stage, before the kiss, I guess she was in 'crush' mode and did not need to know much about her crush, and therefore did not need to make any investment in the relationship as yet.
But a gesture like a kiss takes the crush to another level. So yeah, I'd say by rights Healer has to make a decision. Trust her and reveal who he is and have an open relationship (the kind that Dal Po and In Ha have in Pinocchio is so nice because of this) or choose to hide behind the persona and maybe stagnate in the romance.
Of course for the proper development of the romance, she ought to know her guy before deciding to commit.
However, the risk to Healer is very high. YS being as open and talkative as she is might accidentally spill the beans and open him up to being arrested and to the revenge of Sang Soo. ;)

Well, here's the thing. I get what you mean. BUT I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. In fact, I think I'm kind of enjoying the dynamic of her having this crush on this mysterious, cool guy, and that mysterious, cool guy now finding that he really really doesn't want that crush to end. I think even Young-shin acknowledges that her crush isn't based on much yet, but I like that she's the type of person who let's herself get caught-up in some exciting, unknown romance. She stated herself in episode 7 that unrequited loves often happen because you don't know the person, you just get a "feeling" about them. So it's not like she's clueless to the fact that her love isn't fully based on anything concrete yet.
Also, I don't think the show will gloss over the stage when she actually begins to know and fall for him for real. And this is exactly why I think this drama won't really ever get boring for me because there are a lot of stages in their romance to look forward to. Really this kiss is more about them starting something and letting that interest grow. There's no rule that they have to be completely and totally in love when they kiss for the first time after all :)
Also I could argue that beginning to love someone because he jumped down an elevator shaft (thus risking his life) to save me is a better reason than most people have for liking someone.

Ooh I definitely love that dynamic and the steps of progression in romance in dramas. I know that if this part is not well developed, no matter how great the rest of the story is, I'll be bummed.
Just in the context of real life, I guess as an adult advising a young one, I'd be that cautious. I'd be worried if a kid tells me she has a crush on someone whose face needs to be hidden and whose job is dangerous and secret.
If it was me, although I personally would be crushing on someone like the Healer, I'd have that voice in my head full of dire warnings and telling me that I need to find out more about this person before going in too deep.
But if we are speaking about the beginnings of love, and if the kiss is understood as that, it's understandable. Yes, anything can trigger off interest and it's usually much more mundane or 'worthy' of leading to love than having one's life saved.
So now we await developments on all fronts. I was doing a broad estimate countdown... 55 hours more and counting? :)

Ahhh, okay so I caved and watched the show! SO GOOD, I can't deal!!!
Everyone is doing such a fantastic job in their roles (even PMY--which I was side-eyeing initially, but she thankfully proved me wrong)!
Of course, I'm loving the chemistry and romantic development between our healer and Young Shin (*kiss*)! Classic how YS is falling for the bad-ass super hero and relegates meek BS as only a "sister" when they're actually the same person! Wonder how long it'll take before JH starts getting jealous at himself!
Absolutely love how JH is a tortured hero in a sense but he also has a really warm heart! I totally teared up during the flashback of his last meal with his mom before she left. So sad, and how he has managed to forgive his mom and wants the best for her broke my heart! That's why he needs and deserves someone who won't abandon him first! *tear*
I'm also really digging Moon Ho's protective and mentor-like relationship with YS. Hope it'll just stay in that protective "oppa"/"uncle" zone and not anywhere romantic...
With regards to this episode, I'm curious to know if evil-secretary guy just left after ducking out of JH's way or did he stay to find out that our meek reporter is actually THE healer? Really hope not! I'm constantly worried about JH's identity being blown (which was why I also freaked out in episode 6 when JH approached the SS head with that band-aid on his hand visible....)!
Also, did anyone else notice how curious Myung-hee was acting after telling MS about wanting to reach out to JH's mom? Her demeanor changed after MS left the room, as if out of contempt(?), and she automatically opened the door again, even wider as if to spite him? Maybe Myung-hee knows more than she lets on and she too is maintaining a facade?

@ dramapenchant
About Healer's identity being blown. Yes that is a risk he takes continually by protecting Young Shin but he himself said in Ep 7 that although he felt he was stepping into danger, he remembered his telephone conversation with Young Shin and to spite his Teacher so he decided to continue.
But maybe in Ep 9 we will see if Secretary Oh spies on him and finds out who he is.
About Myung Hee... Yes, a few of us noticed that she might have been subtly reacting to being reminded of Joon Seok, that she is not really as placid as she appears.
That she threw the window open wide as opposed to being closed up and hidden could symbolise a few things:
* a bit of rebellion against Moon Shik who is overly doting (and I find suffocating)
* a show of her independence and that she can decide and think for herself, and a suspicion about what happened to her old friends
* a desire to leave that confinement/a feeling that she was being smothered
Your suggestion that she might have negative feelings about Moon Shik is interesting. Besides this one time, there has been no other indication that her feeling might be contempt. It is of course possible that as so many characters are doing in this show, she too is wearing a mask of sorts and only showing Moon Shik the side that he wants to see. :)

I'm watching this episode right this minute, something I never done before. Sigh. What is this drama (or JCW) doing to me? Usually, I only follow recaps of a drama till the end, and then watch it in my spare time, which could be months and months after it aired. But this Healer thing! I have a deadline! Sigh. Oh well, might as well finish this episode, only 30 min to go, then I'll start working...that is if I could fight the urge to replay the last 10 minutes or so. Sigh.

Hello everyone!!
This should be my 2nd time commenting a drama here at dramabeans. My 1st was IHYV and Healer is sooooo good that i need an outlet for these overflowing feelings. So here i am..
Thank you for the fast recaps, as the subs were quite slow, the recaps are the first thing i look in the morning.. Thank you.
Just wanna say something, we all know, SJH said that he didn't need anyone in his life but he was happy when realised that Teacher remembered his birthday. In the car when he was on the way home to meet the Teacher, he was in a good mood smiling answering the call from Ahjumma.
Deep in his heart he doesnt want to be alone.. he doesnt want to be forgotten.. Thank god he met CYS..
Monday!! Please come faster!!

Well, welcome back to commenting!
That's a good point that you noticed. Jung Hoo would probably really like to have closer and caring relationships but he is afraid of being hurt again, therefore convincing himself that he is happy alone is his shield.
He was definitely happy to see his mum again too, he found Young Shin's reunion with the ahjusshis a hoot and yes he was ran out to meet Teacher, pleased that someone remembered his birthday. Oh my heart aches for the poor lonely boy.
We need Young Shin to continue to pierce it bit by bit. ;)

I mean pierce his shield and reach his heart LOL!
I've finally seen this episode with most of it subbed (but not all :( ) and yes, definitely what he said about how it used to be that he never needed anyone before, that it never mattered to him if people misunderstood him, but that was in the past tense... not anymore.
Since Young Shin misunderstood that Healer was only there to save her because he was paid, he returned to dispel that misunderstanding and like yuppie said at comment 17, to answer her questions...about him not being part of her biological family, the most perfect answer he could give was that kiss.

Thanks for replying.. Anyway, would reply earlier but facing some difficulties in typing. Urrggh!! It kept force closing on me..
Yes.. Please young shin, pierce his armor/heart more and faster. Can't wait for them to advance to next level of romance. Actually, this drama has managed to surprise me on the romance. Usually i can see/have an idea where it would go, but so far this drama managed to make me on my toes wondering what would the otp do. Love it..
Ahjumma said before that everybody abandon jung hoo but he has never abandon anyone in his life. Thus, him leaving young shin doesn't feel right in his heart. Young ahin misunderstand his motivation for staying protecting and saving her, doesn't feel right also. Like when he came back to hwang's place and beat the crap out of him, afterward he said now he feels refreshed. In his heart, for hwang terrorizing young shin even make her having nightmare doesn't feel right to him. So he needed to do something to make it right. For her and for him.

First time commenting here, but then again this show had me going back to my old habits, including losing my cool and reverting back to my teenage days.
This is just a question I've been thinking about. Park Bong Soo left his car in front of the building. Couldn't the reporter have seen it?
I know I'm over-thinking this, and I shouldn't be cause it's K-drama where minor details aren't that important, but suppose they see the car as they're leaving the building, will YC start doubting Bong Soo because Healer warned her about trusting somebody who is close and nice. I mean, Bong Soo left suspiciously after receiving that call from his master and before YC left.
or will she start suspecting that he's got some connection to Healer?
yeah, definitely over-thinking this. It doesn't seem likely since she's still talking to Bong Soo after the incident in the preview.

That was the same thing I wondered too: that she could be suspicious that Bong-soo was the person she needs to be wary of. The whole 'suddenly coming into the office and being near her all the time.' But Bong-soo isn't particularly nice to her - he's just the weak, cowardly, over-protected mama's boy type that needs help and advice from his sunbae. He follows Young-shin because she orders him to, he's not like overtly trying to curry her friendship unlike Moon-ho who is (out of nowhere in her pov) training her & calling her for private talks.
So I don't think he'd be the person she'll suspect over Moon ho. Her mind/heart is on Healer and Moon-ho, not on the helpless intern who tell her 'I'm scared, please help me.'

Me thinks YS will never be wary of BS, because they connect on a subconscious level.
She doesn't know why, she finds it weird, but she calms down and is comfortable cradling BS' arm. He's like her security blanket. She slept on the sofa on BS' arm the first time he slept over her place and she calmed down from an anxiety attack, again on his arms, in the office pantry. Wary of someone you're comfortable with? Not likely.

She also dropped off to sleep in the car while he was driving.
BS will be one of the last persons she'd suspect, so how bummed will she be when she finds out his character is so NOT like BS and that he has been deceiving her all this time? I trust that they can have a heart-to-heart talk through about that and not a unable-to-explain episode which leads to a get-angry-and-disappear idiocy.

Well, on a related note, I've been thinking about this:
In that elevator scene, YS had her arms around his neck. He had one arm around her waist. He only had one arm to grab onto the elevator wire when it dropped away fr them. He must be around 150 lbs; Let's say she is 100. So his one arm supports 250 lbs?
I love him so much as the Superman-like too cool for school Healer. So maybe better not to over think such inconsequential details rooted in realism. Escapism is more entertaining often times.

Suspension of disbelief:
I watched that rescue scene a few times and deliberately refused to think about how difficult, maybe impossible it was for him to hold on to that cable without both of them being harnessed. LOL!
The other thing that struck me was knowing which cable to hold on to. He had to hold on to the one that would go up on the pulley while the lift went down. Is it easy to tell the right cable in the dark?
On top of that, the bad Sec Oh must be a whiz at elevator systems to know what to cut and that empty building was questionably totally lacking in security.
But its a drama, so I will now hold my peace over unbelievable technical feats.

Hi phenomenal jumps across buildings and graceful leaps upwards to haul himself on to ledges or up walls is definitely fly-able stuff. And his totally silent landings right in open spaces without anyone noticing is remarkable.
Then again in an interview he did say it was painful to be suspended for a couple of days for some scenes. And they do not show the times he probably had help in reaching those high up places or landing on something soft.
So all the more I commend those behind-the-scenes people who make all that athleticism so artistically pleasing and technically impressive, and I commend JCW for his gracefulness and agility. Oh, and thanks to the editing team as well for the seamless action scenes!! :)

he put the yellow harness around her, belted it up, then it looked liked he grabbed another part of the harness and wrapped it around himself before clipping himself to her harness. of course doing all that in the dark elevator and managing as you mentioned grabbing onto the correct wire/cord to pull them up is amazing, well it has to happen that way otherwise how is our hero gonna save the lady!
That building was like a ghost town, no one about, very scary, she was brave to venture inside!

Since he put the harness around her, I think he was holding onto her+harness & the harness will pull the 250llbs of them.
And I suppose he could have grabbed any of the cables because as the elevator drops, all of the holding cables would have broken/torn.
But it is remarkable how he lined up exactly through the ceiling opening ^^;;

I don't think YS will mistake Moon Ho for Healer, because he doesn't make her heart race, nor that 'feeling' as she puts it.
Healer makes her heart race, Bong Sook-ah is her kindred spirit, her comfort zone, her all time easy to spill ones beans about secrets and feelings sisterly figure.
she doesn't trust Moon Ho like she trust Bong Sook and Healer.
From extended preview, could it be that she would realize that Bong Sook makes her feel that 'feeling' when he dresses up in that tux?
This is off topic here,
but after Sec Oh had that convo with the Elder he picked up a cigarette but off the grass, I have a feeling that Old Pervy Teacher was lurking about there and heard about getting rid of that child that reappeared 22 yrs later.
Also why was Healer screaming his head off in preview.
Also what Teacher and Ajummha are afraid that he would find out that his dad committed suicide, but actually he has always known that since when his mother left him at 8.
Coincidence or what at 8 both their lives change,
at 8 Jung Hoo for the worst, Jian for the better.
his mum left him, so then he grow distance and as a self protection mechanism, he stops believing in people, nor did he care for their thoughts, concern or understanding, because he rather not have anyone than to suffer losing them, he essentially became an orphan. she got adopted into a loving family to be able to heal her abusive lonely 3 yrs as an orphan.
In answer to another beanies question of who is Jung Hoo, I'd say he is a sensitive, caring, playful, intelligent, gentlemanly, understanding, thoughtful, sometimes rebellious, ultimately loyal, inquisitive and very sexy man.

@Minihaha @64.2.1.1.1
Nice catch that you picked up on the cigarette-butt pick-up scene. I did briefly wonder about it, but did not pursue it further. It seemed odd then, incongruous to the scene preceding it - that of Oh reporting to Elder. Now I'll be keeping that in mind, wondering if anything will turn on that.
As to the OTP's age, I think YS was 5 when she disappeared and JH was 6 (although only a month separated their birth). YS was shunted to different homes until adopted by Chae Chi Soo at 8. Disappearing at 5 to reappear after 22 years, tallies with her current age of 27. This also tallies with Moon Ho's narrative that his life is tied also to the events of '92.
I also think YS disappeared after her father died. At the hospital scene where Myung Hee was wearing the neck brace, she begged MS to find YS, imploring that she won't be able to meet Gil Han without having YS with her. My take from the subbed dialogue is her husband had already died by then.
JH is also aware his father supposedly committed suicide, apparent from his school scene. He may not know why though, which may account for his wailing in the preview. We'll see...
I tend to agree with you on our OTP's growing arc post their traumatic experiences. Nice touch. :-)

The kiss was so swoonworthy, I literally, out loud, squealed as I watching (I'm sorry, neighbors, for being such a weird viewer). But I couldn't help to think though that it wasn't too romantic in that world - that is, the Healer could have been an old guy! Someone like 80 years old or even her dad's age (she thought that he could maybe be her biological dad). As comforting as this person may be to Young-shin, he's still a stranger! You don't know the guy, Young-shin, you've only heard rumors and he may have rescued you once or twice...nuuuuuu don't fantasize about this stranger!!! hahaha

Technically - Healer's voice is deeper while PBS's (in person) pitch is higher coupled w/ the stammer and pauses between words. She wrote: "The report badly shakes Moon-shik’s composure, and he thinks back to the aftermath of that accident. Badly injured and lying in a hospital bed, Myung-hee begs him.."
the question is about 'that accident' Did I miss something or did they reveal something about the accident to Myunghee.
With the wording of 'that accident' it seems that I missed something somewhere. I'm not trying to pick apart the recap, love it as always, but with skipping around various sites trying to find this subbed ASAP, I could have missed it.

1. just a thought, possibly Bong Sook-ah may receive a surprise birthday party thrown for him by Young Shin and lawyer dad along with pick-pocket adjusshi, because he mentioned it's his bday before rushing out to meet Teacher (it wil be another cause to pause about how much he is so loney and in need of human concern and their unconditional love for him)
2. Secretary Oh is very odd, in all the previous episodes he looks almost afraid of Moon Shik, then at other times it's almost a sneering look he gives him (maybe I'm over analysing his character's facial portrayal (hymm!)) I wouldn't put it pass this guy being the killer of both Gil Ah and Seo Joon seok 22 yrs ago and the one to poision and push off the delivery guy in Epi 1. this guy resent serving Moon Shik, he'd much rather be serving the Elder.
3. Bong Sook will pretend that he followed Young Shin to help her, but got lost in the empty building, that could explain why his car is parked outside,,.

1) A birthday party for BS will be great! He may be so surprised that his stutter and discomposure will be real! Yes, and then he will have to re-examine again his ideal of not needing anyone to care about him. He did say it was a thought he had in the past tense, but a gathering of friends around him will seal that thought.
2) Secretary Oh is only interested in doing what the Elder wants. He can put on a show of being subservient but he is actually acting for the Elder and probably feels that he is above Moon Shik in some ways/trusted more by the Elder than Moon Shik is, since the Elder has placed him there to report on Moon Shik.
Definitely if the Elder gives instructions to kill, Oh will be the man to do the job. If Gil Han's and Joon Seok's deaths were murder, we have to find out what made them dangerous.
3) It is a possible way for BS to explain his presence. :)

This episode was so freaking awesome. I love good smitten he is with her and how he fell in love with her. He is falling so hard and its so hard for him. The pick pocket ajusshi is totally catching on and noticing how pbs keeps looking at cys. It's just so amazing. That beautiful rescue and kiss at the end was just superb. Breathtaking. Ahhhh!!!!!!! I fangirled throughout the whole episode. Hehe. So cute. This drama is the perfect balance of everything.

Yea, ahahaha he kept eyeing them the whole time through with camera/test shots/talking thing.
And the subtle inclusion of foreshadowing: he was dusting a chocolate cake with powdered sugar and kept on dusting it until after Healer left and there were peaks of sugar on that cake. It was kind of reflexive of the birthday cake, snowing references, sweetness, black & white dualities, ..... (am i reading too much into this? blame english lit classes for too many symbolism-hunting.....)

@CZ haha not at all. While watching I kept seeing a lot of foreshadowing and symbolisms too! Just like how everyone who JH cared for abandoned him [even he doesn't even know who the real Minja is], he doesn't live in an apartment or house but an ABANDONED building. Don't you find that sadly symbolic of his character too? As in he's always alone, and the big abandoned building somehow makes him look even more alone.
I love how the writer draws connections and uses metaphor in her writing. Like how JH says that when humans look at animals (chimpanzees and tigers) all they see is just chimps and tigers. Which is exactly how he see humans, they're all just the same for him. However, CYS is different - she's like an injured leopard bravely fighting an hyena, to which he gets teary thinking about it. That scene just reflects JH inner character at that moment, how it's the first time out of all the similar humans that was able to evoke emotion in him. She's able to just melt his cold exterior one at a time.
Another foreshadow I think someone mentioned is when MS closed the window that MH was staring out of. But as soon as MS goes away, she opens the window straight away and much wider. It could possibly foreshadow her breaking out of her confinements in this future and how she is not just allowing MS to coddle her inside all the time. It's her act of rebellion..
I also miss Literature class since I finished high school 5 years ago. It's always nice to go back to thinking about lit once in awhile :D

Wow so far I've noticed there's at least 3 superhero references: first the dark knight (batman) when he's the hero in the night while getting blamed for murder; second, superman reference since he's a hero while working as a reporter in disguise; and now spiderman due to the reverse uncovering of face kiss. Healers is awesome!! Anyone else can think of another superhero reference?

Hi Teru.
Did someone specifically say Healer is the "hero in the night"? Also, when did Batman get blamed for murder? I'm not sure if the kiss is a spiderman reference. In the Spiderman movies, spiderman's face mask was pulled down and not MJ's.
Healer is also like Superman because he falls for a female reporter and his PBS alter-ego is similar to Clark Kent.

In the second of the Nolan's Batman - Two-Face is killed by the Joker (pushed out of a building or something?) and Batman is blamed for that. I think that's how the movie ended....
So Healer being framed for the first guy's murder + all the night-work that he does kind of fits in pretty well.
Those are just sketches of homages included - I don't think fitting in exact incidence or images would help the story or us the audience~~

Speaking of Healer being framed...I'm sure we can likely expect some development on that front soon. The detectives were completely absent from this episode, but I'm sure it isn't too long before they begin to uncover more about Jung-hoo, what with him getting so preoccupied with Chae Young-shin. His first aim in going undercover was to find Go Sung-chul's real murderers so hopefully he'll start making more headway on that soon. The drama really has done a great job of setting up so many different sources of conflict and I can only hope it'll have the time to deal with them all in a satisfying way.

Hiya red!
I finally have time to go back to my comments to reply. Seems like I wasn't clear when I pointed out those references - my apologies. But I'm more than happy to explain so here goes my long explanation...
Like what @CZ mentioned with Batman, I was referring to Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy. It's the second movie (The Dark Knight) that I was referring to. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the plotline, but as someone who love Batman stories myself I'll first explain the synopsis: Basically, Harvey Dent (as CZ referred to as Two-face) in the movie was seen as a man of justice so when the Joker threatened to kill off innocent citizens one-by-one unless Batman reveals his identity, Dent names himself as Batman so that Bruce (Batman) can protect his secret. So in the process Dent and his fiancé (Rachel) was targeted and kidnapped by the Joker. Batman saves Dent's life and Rachel dies in the process. [I forgot to mention that Rachel was first in love with Batman/Bruce but in the end chose to marry Dent to have a future, and the reason Batman ended up saving Dent was because the Joker tricked him by giving the wrong location]. Dent was so heartbroken and in his moment of weakness the Joker manages to convince him to take revenge on those who could've prevented her death - and so that is what he did. If the public finds out that Dent has turned evil and is murdering people, they would lose hope in the justice system. Near the end when Dent is about to shoot Lieutenant Gordon's sons, Batman saves them by pushing Dent off the building to his death. Batman then convinces Gordon to frame him for all the murders than Dent committed (including killing Dent) so that Dent will remain a symbol of hope for the city. At the end of the movie, we see Gordon destroying the Bat-signal and launches police officers on a manhunt for Batman. Gordon narrates that Batman is "a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight" - basically a true hero because he is willing turn his image into a dark one so that people would not lose faith (since in the eyes of the people of Gothem, Dent was the representation of the justice system - a white knight). Batman doesn't need people to believe that he is a hero but what is more important their hope/faith - he is a selfless hero. So...with that brief synopsis, let me answer your questions...

Re: Did someone specifically say Healer is the “hero in the night”? Also, when did Batman get blamed for murder?
Well to be precise, I'm just drawing on intertextual references from one work to another and how there are just enough elements to allow audiences to find a connection. Intertextuality doesn't have to be exactly precise in details for audiences to find a connection. It's something you learn in Literature class. To explain this, I'll use two examples from literature: Boccaccio's "The Decameron" and Marguerite de Navarre's "Heptameron". Boccaccio writes a collection of stories starting with the Black Plague, and the 10 characters being forced to spend time in the countryside trying to get away from the plague. They tell tales of love and morality. In Heptameron, the plague is replaced by a flood and the 7 women 3 men in Boccaccio's case get replaced by a 5-5 ratio. However, there are several stories that mirror each other in lesson, or are handling similar cases with different outcomes and interpretations - but what is more important is that every story has an intertextual reference from previous works. There is always something to which we can relate to or draw upon one way or another. In this way, it works the same as the references I gave above, so going back to your questions... there are certain interconnections which can be drawn from the character of Batman and Healer. In the same way that the people of Gothem have faith in Batman as a hero (before he framed himself), Healer's clients have faith that he works with integrity and follows a strict code of ethics to his work (which includes no killing, bodily harm, or stealing client's data). So when Healer was framed for murder, this will affect his future business and more people would be wary/scared to hire him unless he clears up his name by finding out the truth. And from that point onwards, he went against his code of ethics as seen by stealing MS's video (to find the truth) and even beating up Hwang/stealing his hard drive out of personal reasons. As for Healer being “the hero in the night”, I think I should’ve worded it properly – I meant to say Healer is like a dark knight himself. He runs all his errands at night but even at this I wouldn’t consider him as a hero yet. Unlike Batman, he has no selfless reasons for becoming a night errand boy (it’s nothing like a blood debt, world peace, or even for greater good) but rather it’s a mean for an end for himself. Meaning he wants to be alone since everyone in his life abandoned him. And I’m not surprised nor blame him for wanting to spare himself all the pain by dreaming of living alone on a deserted Island. What makes him similar to Batman was at the end of the day he was alone, just like how Batman becomes alone to let the police hunt him down at the end of the movie. Healer starts to become a hero when CYS came into his life, so he went out of his way to save her many time without her knowing who he is. So...

[Cont..]
So he’s her “knight”.
Basically a TL;DR answer of your Batman questions: Healer runs errands at night, he’s alone in his life, and he’s CYS’s hero – that’s in a way similar to Batman.
Re: I’m not sure if the kiss is a spiderman reference. In the Spiderman movies, spiderman’s face mask was pulled down and not MJ’s.
As explained above, intertextuality doesn’t need the scene/details to be exactly the same for audiences to draw connections to previous works. As long as there is just enough elements people can make interconnections of certain scenes/characters too. Besides me, a lot of others have picked up on this too. You can have a look at comments 109.1.1 (@Chandler) and 117 (@meanseok) to see my point. The lifting up of CYS’s hat/kiss is what makes it different to the original Spiderman movie. It wouldn’t be original if they did the exact same thing now would it? I would call this the Korean version of Spiderman kiss ;)
Also, this may not be relevant to your questions, but Healer also has a lot of City Hunter vibes. And it’s another superhero reference I would like to mention. A lot of viewers would associate certain similarities from Healer to City Hunter. Someone mentioned this from Tumbler that one of the most distinct similarities, besides the vigilante aspect, is the interconnection between the male characters. Here we see a man (JH’s Teacher) taking care of his friend’s son (JH), whose father (JS) was betrayed by a person he trusted (MS), while the traitor’s close relative (MH) feels guilt and responsibility and he’s been trying to make amends. The question is if MH will become JH’s very own Prosecutor in all regards and if so, then whether we should prepare ourselves a Kleenex box for the end of episode 19.
Anyway, it’s a very detailed reply but I hope it answers your questions! If there’s something else you don’t get with my previous comment, feel free to ask. :D

Hi guys, there's another reference I thought would be an interesting read from Soompi thread...
According to Wikipedia, the radio station name is called 'Pirate Broadcast' (Literal Translation from 海盜廣播). But I just had a light bulb moment, maybe that book is a book that the guys & Myung Hee have been working on to publish. The cover is a cross (the kind that First Aid box uses - indicating to heal something), and then a pen - so we are maybe on the right track about 'Healer' means 'the people in Pirate Broadcast' who 'use words to heal' people? Either that, or it's a booklet that recorded what they talked about whenever they did a broadcasting.
Early 1980s was ruled by a dictator president named Chun Doo Hwan. I happened to watch the movie The Attorney not long ago, and it's based on the Burim Case happened back then. People's lives must be extremely tough then without freedom of thoughts/speech, that's why Jung Hoo & Young Shin's parents were rebelling against the government. Writer Song Ji Na did her history homework.

@ Justdroppingby, Hello!
You said this, "rooftop kiss” (a reference to Rooftop Prince)." When I read that (on the site JCW's kitchen, or something like that), I thought that it was called "Rooftop Kiss" because the kiss happened on a rooftop. You think it has to do with RTP? I watched that drama, and I do remember 2 rooftop kisses: the 1st kiss between the leads (was that a rooftop?), and the one at the end of their "wedding" ceremony (which was on the same surface/place the 1st kiss happened).
I was just curious, do you think this kiss reminds people of some of the kisses in RTP, the drama? If so, how? I was just curious, by the way...

It certainly makes a difference whether the recapper likes/loves the show or not. When she doesn't, all the nay-sayers come out to say negative things about it, many of them unfair/uncalled for.
It got to be so bad that liking a show on its own recap thread became a minority opinion and an offence. That's why I think it's fairer for the person who hates a show Not to recap it and pass it on to sb who is at least neutral.

He didn't even try or forced himself to act, but everything about his acting is just to natural as if he is living in his character. When all the main characters realize their past relationship and connection, it will be VERY interesting. Kim Moon Sik is not the ultimate villain but the Elder. That's why he warned the Healer no personal contact, right? I'm not going crazy and seeing stuff that aren't there, right? Can anyone tell me? Why do I feel that KMH will fall for CYS? Hi,
I don't think that M Ho has feelings for CYS that way. He loved her with she was a baby and then a wee kid, up to 5 years old. He has always loved her as her uncle. He feels guilty and responsible for what happened to her mom and to her that fateful day/night, the details of which haven't yet been revealed. He wants to make things up to her, so he wants to help her realise her dream of being a top reporter. He doesn't see her as a woman to take home n spend the rest of his life w.
He warns Healer not to go near her cos he knows that there is danger surrounding Healer. Unseen, unrevealed, the guy can protect his clients. But there are ppl out to frame him as a murderer n probably try to kill him. So it's safer for CYS if he doesn't have any 'personal contact' w her.

True, true, what you said above about Moon Ho, My thoughts are exactly that, Moon Ho is a caring and protective uncle to Jian/Young Shin.
He can't tell Young Shin why he has hired healer (initially to find her, then discover her background and then her dreams, and now to protect her), for him to do so he will have to reveal what happened 22 yrs ago, who her mum is, her mum being married to the man that ensured that she was abandon child and his gilt because of his silence all these years.
Because healer is the best and it has been known that he never makes his work personal in any way so the clients can be assured that he gets the job done but he never makes personal contacts, nor does he interferes once he he completes his errands that's it, job done, but it seems not so in this case with Young shin.
He is a little alarmed that Healer made himself known to Young Shin, and that being an uncle he wants to ensure her safety but doesn't want her to be involved with the 'Secret Badass Errand Boy' So a warning to save and protect Young Shin without any personal contact, as in Young Shin should not be aware of his presence (which is very difficult to do as we have witness with the lift rescue). Jung Soo is already to involved and invested in Young Shin life to be told to 'back off'. He made sure to maake personal contact with her with forehead finger contact (hehe).

Continuing....
Moon Ho only cares for Young Shin with an uncles love.
Albeit that love is very deep, but it is still an uncles love.
Jung Hoo doesn't know this and not trusting Moon Ho's intentions towards Young Shin, he finds himself jealous of Moon Ho who happens to be Young Shin's first crush.
Jung Hoo needs to ensure that she understand 'The Healer' that she means more to the Healer than just an assignment.
With that kiss he has conveyed that he cares for her too, like she has a crush on him, he as a man likes her as a woman. and he, regardless of Moon Ho
instruction will always be there to save and protect her, because of herself, that's is why he disregarded the danger to his life in rescuing her from the lift.
The thought of his possible death if it failed, never even crossed his mind because her life and her living was more important to him not because he was being paid to do the job, but because she was someone who's concerned and care for him meant so much to him, because she made him care for her thoughts about him. (not sure if i'm making sense, very long winded explanation!!!)

The flashbacks to when Moon-ho met baby Ji-an for the first time, and Myung-hee was like "they say a baby never forgets her first kiss"(something like that) and the child actor & camera puts such a solemn focus on it made me groan to think like "ugghhh it's like Sleeping Beauty/Twilight thing - where the 'fate' is being inferred from some kid and a just-born infant."
And the love triangle of the present is given strength of the depth of their connections from 20 years ago.
Amidst all the history and love for Myung-hee, all mixed up with ideations of family, mother, woman, love, guilt, tragedy, power - Moon-ho is on that very path of caring for Young-shin and then caring-loving-wanting.

All the spazzing here forced me out of self-enforced lurker-dom 2 years after my last comment. Sigh, Healer is just that good. Here's to really, really x1000 hoping that the writing keeps being sensational. And having JB spazzing as head fan girl is just awesomesauce. Thank you so much JB and I will faithfully refresh my browser on Tuesdays and Wednesdays around 12pm local time for the next 12 weeks (there goes my lunch time) to read your recaps.
A minor nitpick for me is the OST from MLTR. Despite being a fan of MLTR during me younger, naive years (ehem, ehem), I cringe whenever the song is used in the drama and I felt its lyrics and melody so out of place. The other OSTs in Korean felt melodically more fitting to the scenes even when I don't even understand the lyrics. I'm still trying to figure out why.
Also I am wondering when CYS asked if KMH requested Healer to get Hwang's video stash, he said Healer has interpreted his request rather broadly. KMH did ask Healer to protect CYS from bad guys including Hwang but I think this is not the request he alluded to. I have a sneaky feeling KMH may have his suspicions on PBS being Healer or rather testing out his suspicions by getting him to find out the bar frequented by Hwang. Thus when Healer also provided the video, that can be seen as interpreting his instruction broadly. But I may just be over-analyzing things but I can't wait to find out who will unmask PBS as Healer first between CYS and KMH, it will be great dramatic reveal.

And I love, love, love that JH can stare at CYS through the camera's display through her crushing disappointment of seemingly being rejected by her 2 crushes. When staring straight at her eyes is just too much. Huhuhu, love such details...

I don't think KMH is suspicious of PBS yet even though PBS has been acting weird lately in the office. KMH doesn't have any good reason to do so. He definitely seems suspicious of Healer though because of he's been doing things differently from his request.

Yeah, I'm actually not a huge fan of the OST from MLTR. I don't know, it's not really bad and there are even moments of the song that I really like, BUT there are other parts of the song where the melody and lyrics definitely feel 'off', especially in the way it's paired with scenes.
Love the song that played at the end of this ep though!

I was pretty surprised by the kiss. I know that he was trying to clear a misunderstanding that YS had and he has feelings for her, but the Healer is someone who doesn't like being around people. Of course, YS is the exception, but kissing her didn't seem like something he was capable of doing.

Chandler
January 1, 2015 at 11:01 AM
Ya know, I think that's why I like the kiss so much. Because I didn't think he was capable of taking that step yet...but he just DID anyway (I'm a sucker for when characters just follow their instincts). I really like the fact that he knows what he wants enough to just do it. He, in that moment, just really didn't want her to stop having a crush on him, and, like he said, he hasn't wanted anything from anyone in a long time. Sure, he might not love being around people, but now that he has someone he wants to understand and care about him, he can't just go and let her think that he's been saving her for money, when he's clearly falling for her.
That said, I still think we're definitely in for him regretting the kiss and, probably, drawing back more. It's usually right when you first let your desires get the best of you that you begin wanting to stifle them.

Good call, with your thoughts, my thoughts mirror your thoughts, but I do hope he doesn't pull back, if he does, Young Shin will propel him forward with her secret love for him (she thinks it's secret from the Healer).
From preview it seems like he is still watching over her from his usual perch, not out of curiosity anymore, but because he is so drawed to her, he can't keep away. He can't reveal himself as Healer, he can't approach her as Jung Hoo, nor can he be around her as Himself while pretending to be Bong Soo, because she wouldn't behave as the young shin in love with the healer (poor guy).
Now she needs to chat to Bong Sook, but because she lost her phone in the lift murder attempt, and she needs to talk to her Sister Bong Sook-ah about her experience with Healer earlier on in the day and the possibility of what that kiss meant for their future relationship with each other. and her assumption that if she waited for him at night time he would make a secret appearance.
(like normal good girlfriends, we talk and discuss all our thoughts and feelings about the boy we crush on or whom we are in love with to a sympathetic and understanding ear of a good friend , I think its so sweet that Young Shin is confiding in Bong Sook-ah about her thoghts and feelings about Healer).
Can't help but think she would be utterly mortified to find out that Healer is none other than Clumsy struttering sister like Bong sook-ah (hehe).

Okay, as much as I love this extended preview for showing us PBS and CYS all dressed up together...is anyone else more worried about the clip of what looks like Healer wailing in despair? I'm holding out hope that it could be one of the 5 friends (from the past), but if it is, in fact, Jung Hoo, I'm worried that it might mean he found out about his father "killing" Young-shin's father. I'm not sure how he would have found that out (perhaps from Teacher?...but Teacher probably knows his father didn't actually do it so I wonder...), but I can't think of anything else that could drive him to that point. I don't if I'm ready to see Healer cry yet!!!

Yes, I saw that and worried for his sake. He sure found out sthg very nasty. As ajumma said to Teach, he could found out that his father didn't die in an accident like his mother told him, just by reading the newspapers of that time. What makes him scream like that is likely to be that his father 'killed' her father n then 'committed suicide'.
I believe we r headed for serious angst.

it is stated on 'Jichangwookkitchen.com' fan blog site that Healer wailed in frustration because he couldn't appear before Young Shin as either Healer or as Jung Hoo, while she is staying with Moon Ho, as Moon Ho doesn't trust the Healer with regards to her safety anymore.
I so want to really know what caused this emotional outburst, is it to do with Young Shin, or his persona restricting him being able to have a normal love relationship, or his dad past!

I've been watching and re-watching this drama for the past week, because I have nothing better to do with my life and because this drama is just amazing. I have never obsessed over a drama this badly before... except maybe Iris because I was fangirling over TOP. I am just in love with the way JCW plays his role as the healer and Bongsoo. I'm really curious about what Junghoo is really like though. I don't know if I'm the only one missing it, but I feel like Junghoo is still a mystery to me. Like we all know Bongsoo is a wimp, and Healer is a dangerous but hot guy. Junghoo on the other hand we know nothing about really, I realized that watching this episode. I'm also curious about the past, and how everything will tie in together at the end.
But thanks for the re-cap, I love your reactions to the drama because mine is the same as yours!

More than the ratings (I hope they hit double-digits) I'm concerned about the fact that the drama is currently live-shooting. JCW updated his IG w/ a picture of E10 script yday!! :S Considering that there's a bit of action and the show's supposed to be all slick I am nervous on many fronts. It is a bit worrisome in that the drama had started shooting in September/October and yet in the fifth week of its airing they don't have banked episodes. Hope the cast and crew rest well and take the safety precautions that are needed.

Safety of cast and crew is Paramount.
Action scenes are punishing and dangerous to shoot in the best of weathers. They (he) work so hard, in such cold weather. And therefore I wish they'd be safe, and would also get more recognition for their troubles.

Since JCW is a part of the most action scenes amongst the main cast it makes me anxious that he has another biggish commitment besides this show. I remember reading that YJT was involved in an accident involving a tile (prop?!) and after he wrapped up his scene he had to rush to the hospital. While the scenes themselves are dangerous to film the set poses quite a risk. Anyhooo, I hope they take the safety precautions that are needed for the cast and crew!

I know that fan site, n do visit it, but find it hard to navigate, in terms of finding specific things that I'm looking for, mainly becos it's hard to tell what fits under various headings n categories. For example:
1. Where to spazz on Healer eps? Viewers r going nuts here n Soompi; surely his own ardent fans would too. Are there posts for each ep?
2. I watched his RM eps when they were aired, but now I want to see what ppl have said about them, but can't find those.
3. I want to watch all his interviews n past appearances on other variety shows if any. There doesn't seem to be a straight-forward way to get them there.
4. It'd be nice if there is a listing of all his works (dramas, specials, films) with links n torrents.
Wish cherkell was reading these, n can give some pointers on the way to make best use of her fan site, but she doesn't seem v active on this thread.

Hi, I'm the other admin of the Kitchen and I'll just reply on cherkell's behalf for now...
We just set up this site less than half a year ago, so we are still trying to straighten things out. I'm aware that the site navigation isn't very intuitive, and we are still trying to see how we can improve it without doing away with the kitchen menu concept.
To answer your questions:
1. We currently do not have a discussion page for Healer. We originally wanted to write weekly reviews but unfortunately, that hasn't seen the light of day since we found ourselves too busy.
2. You can use the search bar or the running man tag at the sidebar to find the relevant posts. I also understand our site doesn't work well on mobile devices, so might be better to use your desktop.
3. There are many interviews and variety shows that we haven't managed to sub or translate. But we do have a handful that can be found under "Main Course".
4. We do have a list (http://wp.me/P4DDSf-P8) but we do not post torrent links as we are trying to toe the line so that our site doesn't get shut down.
Hope this helps. And thanks for your keen interest in JCW and our site! :)

Hi @KDaddict! I just returned home from Seoul yesterday and am trying to catch up with all that happened whilst away. But @Daegorr pretty much summed up how I would have also responded. :D
As to 'The Kitchen,' the two of us are doing our best to keep it fresh and up-to-date while working full-time-plus jobs. That means not being able to write up Healer recaps, since there are several other sites doing that just fine without us adding to all the noise. But we need to remind folks that we are not a 'Healer' Fan Site -- we do not have the bandwidth available to provide a thread for discussion of each episode as it airs. We prefer to concentrate on Ji Chang Wook the actor, and not put a specific emphasis on any of his individual projects.
And as I am a copyright paralegal by profession, we cannot legally post any links to torrents because we will be shut down in a heartbeat by our ISP for violation of their terms of service.
Hope this helps, and look forward to lots more juicy Ji Chang Wook news in the coming months!
새해 복 많이 받으세요! Happy New Year!!!

Hi cherkell n daegorr,
How wonderful to have a Ji Chang Wook fan site in English. Of course you've jobs and lives n are doing your best; it's a labor of love after all. W his star on a meteoric rise, I reckon you'll be even more busy with posts n traffic from now on.
You r right, no one can post torrents or links; what was I thinking. My bad.
I wasn't looking for recaps, just wanting to check the level of excitement among his ardent fans.
The kitchen concept is warm n homey; If you can make searches intuitive w/in that framework, it'd be great.
Happy NY to you too!

If I remember well, Koreans say that "when the first snow comes, everything you do (lying/deceiving/fooling included) is forgiven"... I think that's what Healer thought when it started snowing on that rooftop. ;-)

On that specific day, he was free to do as he felt like doing, to go with his gut feelings. :-)

I meant to comment on that show, but had forgotten:
First snow is esp. impt for love stories becos Koreans believe that if lovers meet or kiss at the first snow of the year, then they'll always be together.
So it's extremely telling on Healer's intention when he turns back to kiss her the minute he sees the snow n extends his hand to catch it.

Wow thanks so much for explaining the meaning behind Healer's action. I've been wondering about what is it with snow that Koreans always tend to comment on. Like I always see celebs I follow on Twitter/Instagram posting pictures of the first snow and why on dramas I always see couples kissing at first snow (for example Pinocchio ep 8). Thanks so much I finally understand now :D
