Healer: Episode 8
by javabeans
It’s a good thing I write these recaps as I watch the episode and not after already watching it through, because otherwise today’s recap would just be pictures and unintelligible vowel sounds. Like urrrrrrr and eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. I’m sure that would’ve been entertaining for all of two seconds before you needed to know exactly what happened to asplode my lingual skills. So without further ado…

EPISODE 8 RECAP
Myung-hee’s unexpected run-in with Jung-hoo occupies her thoughts afterward, and we see the encounter play out from her perspective. This time when the Healer steps out of the study, he actually bears her friend Joon-seok’s face and she calls out his name in surprise. But her vision of Joon-seok’s face is replaced with Jung-hoo’s actual one, and she drops his sleeve at the realization. Similar, but different.
Still, she tries to follow when he hurries away, although Moon-shik holds her back. As her knee-jerk reaction fades, she remembers that her friend has been dead twenty years and can’t be the person she saw, assuming that her mind was playing tricks on her. Moon-shik, however, carefully files away this information about the uncanny resemblance.
Moon-shik calls the Healer a burglar and Myung-hee decides that her confusion was her mistake, since she didn’t get a good look at the face after all. But the reminder of Joon-seok spurs the desire to get in touch with his widow, and she asks her husband to look into it. Moon-shik cautions that she might not want the reminder, but Myung-hee persists.
Moon-shik casually-but-not-casually mentions their son, and Myung-hee supplies him with the name and age (28, a month older than Ji-an), and another piece seems to click into place in his brain. It is a scary-smart brain.
The grounds crawl with security guards who completely miss the shadowy Healer perched up in a tree. I know the Healer’s the best in the industry, but the SS goons hardly make that look like an accomplishment. Jung-hoo is too intrigued to leave, watching Myung-hee at her window as he puts in a call to Min-ja.
Jung-hoo guesses that the reason Min-ja and Teacher wanted him out of the country was because of this connection between Myung-hee and his father. He gives Min-ja a long moment to explain why, and when the line remains silent, he says that he’ll have to find out for himself then.
But just as he’s about to head back, his Teacher’s voice comes over the line, stopping him short. He provides just enough information about Myung-hee’s identity to prevent him from going off like a hothead, and directs Jung-hoo to a meeting spot.
Jung-hoo drives furiously and arrives at the riverbank, where he thinks back to being eight: “After my mother left, I’ve never cried because of a person. I didn’t hope for anything from another person either. What I hate most in this world is a person’s understanding and interest.”
This flashes him back to his schoolboy years, when he’s punished at school for fighting with other boys. His teacher clucks over his constant troublemaking but asks the counselor for her understanding and interest, since Jung-hoo has no parents. He sits there enduring his teacher’s pity and his classmates’ ridicule as it’s explained that his father killed himself and his mother left.
When Jung-hoo returns to class, word has spread. Worse than ridicule is pity, and when a classmate tells the others to go easy on Jung-hoo, it only sparks more rage.
His phone rings with a call from Young-shin, who pelts him with questions and concern: Was he tracking down bars all night? Did he sleep? Why isn’t he picking up his calls? She picks up on his down mood, then asks him to pick either east or west. She received information yesterday that she ought to report to Moon-ho, but isn’t sure how much to reveal, so she’ll decide randomly. Hence: east or west?
She doesn’t leave room for Jung-hoo to protest, so he arbitrarily picks east and tries to get in a few words—difficult, when he’s not supposed to know what her info’s about. But she just tells him to eat breakfast and come in late if he needs to.
He thinks again, “What I hate most in the world is understanding and interest. Or, I used to.”
While Young-shin waits for Moon-ho to arrive at work, she mulls over her dilemma. She remembers advice she’d once been told about trusting other people, and how you shouldn’t automatically mistrust the 49 people out of 50 who are trustworthy, just because one isn’t. And yet… there’s the Healer’s warning to be wary of people who approach her with nice gestures.
She’s there when Moon-ho’s broadcast hoobae, Jong-soo, arrives to play out his role of spy. He presents himself as a close associate of Moon-ho’s, so Young-shin asks what kind of person Moon-ho is. Jong-soo agrees to tell her, if she’ll tell him all about this Chae Young-shin person, who may be the reason for Moon-ho’s move to Someday.
Young-shin’s face goes through a hilarious series of reactions to Jong-soo’s questions, which have less to do with her character and much more to do with whether she’s fresh-faced or sweet or stacked. Just then Moon-ho arrives and calls her name (Jong-soo starts in embarrassment), steering her aside for a report on her latest findings.
Young-shin plays President Hwang’s room-salon footage for Moon-ho and Editor Jang, which contains over 200 hours of video of various important men being drunk and sleazy with Hwang’s stable of actresses. But naturally they want to know where she got her hands on this evidence, and she fumbles for an answer before settling on the truth.
She reveals that her informant is someone she’s been researching for a very long time, and that it took a lot of effort to manage a rendezvous. However, she’s frank about her misgivings in trusting Moon-ho with this, since she’s not sure he won’t claim her work. Therefore, she asks that he entrust her with handling contact with the source.
Moon-ho promises readily, and asks who it is. She asks if he knows what a night courier is, and names one such messenger called the Healer. Moon-ho confirms that he’s heard of the guy.
Jung-hoo comes rushing into the office to report to the boss, but Jong-soo blocks him and insists there’s a meeting going on. Jung-hoo pulls a feint—again, mixing Bong-soo-like clumsiness with Healer’s slick moves to whirl around Jong-soo and barge in anyway.
He announces that he’s found Hwang’s favorite room salon, Luna Moon, acting like he spent all night pounding the pavement instead of just beating the info out of Hwang.
As he’s talking, Young-shin sees the pop-up notification on Moon-ho’s computer: email from the Healer. She looks at him in shock, and Moon-ho asks the others to leave them to some privacy. Jung-hoo purposely drops papers that give him an excuse to plant a bug underneath the table, then is ushered out by the editor.
Young-shin eyes Moon-shin with a fresh wave of distrust: Why would Healer be emailing Moon-ho? Via the bug, Jung-hoo listens in on the conversation as Young-shin asks Moon-ho whether he hired the Healer, and what he requested. He’s got Min-ja on the other line, who sent the email at his instructions, since he wanted clarification about why Moon-ho wanted Young-shin protected.
Moon-ho admits that he hired the Healer but declines to answer why, turning the conversation into an interviewing critique—she’s approaching him all wrong. She asks if he asked the Healer to save her from gangsters, and to take her DNA sample. She can’t understand his reasons, neither can she just drop it and accept non-answers.
Despite picking at her interviewing flaws, Moon-ho decides to answer her initial question about why he came to Someday. He says he wanted to set up his own outlet and ran background checks on every employee, not just her. After all, she’ll be a journalistic “human shield” for him, so he has to make sure she’s in good shape.
Stated like that it sounds so simple, and it gets him off the hook for every question minus the one he can’t answer about her DNA, which he baldly denies. Young-shin is hit with a wave of disappointment and embarrassment, and says that her exchange with the Healer yesterday now “makes me want to die.”
At that, we split-screen to show Jung-hoo’s face reacting to her mortification (agh, so good) as she thinks of his warning not to trust too readily. She cuts herself off before admitting that much to Moon-ho, though he’s more interested in the tidbit about her meeting the Healer yesterday. Did she see his face?
She replies, “If I’d seen it, I would know just how pitifully he regarded me.”
Moon-shik receives confirmation that Young-shin was found at the age of five and bounced from family to family for a while, and was finally adopted at eight. She was found behind a trash can in a Seoul alleyway, and was thought to have a speech disability because she refused to talk.
The report badly shakes Moon-shik’s composure, and he thinks back to the aftermath of that accident. Badly injured and lying in a hospital bed, Myung-hee begs him to find Ji-an for her. He inquires at the police station, where a report confirms that a child was found hiding behind a trash can, and that takes him to the orphanage.
Sobbing Ji-an runs to hug him, and Moon-shik comforts her wearing a heavy expression. You can see the wheels already turning in his head….
As Moon-shik recalls this, he starts breathing heavily and then hears a voice asking, “Why did you do it?” He sees his old friend Joon-seok in the room, chiding him: “If you were gonna be torn up about it forever, you should’ve just brought her home.” Ooh, is he turning all Macbeth on us now?
He tries to ignore his conscience-specter, but Joon-seok persists, asking if he thought Ji-an’s survival would keep Myung-hee bound to her dead husband. He looks like he wants to defend himself, but every time he tries to speak up, Joon-seok disappears.
And then another voice asks, “Why did you do it?” This time it’s Gil-han, Myung-hee’s first husband, reminding him, “We were friends.” He advances on Moon-shik with that look of betrayal on his face, and Moon-shik shrinks back in fear. “Friends shouldn’t do that,” Gil-han says.
And upping the creep factor even more, we see the secretary watching intently from the doorway, noting Moon-shik’s erratic behavior and reporting it straightaway to the Elder. He explains about the brothers being interested in the child lost in 1992, and that Moon-ho appears to have already approached her.
The Elder calls Moon-shik “top class” among all the people he’s developed, knowing his place without being servile, and when to advance and when to retreat. “But you see,” he adds, “Moon-shik has exactly one weakness. That daughter.” She has the capability to turn him into a balloon doll—one of those dancing balloons you put in front of stores. One needle is all it takes to pop it: “And we can’t let that happen to Moon-shik.”
The secretary understands what he means, and agrees to send Moon-ho a clear warning without Moon-shik knowing.
Moon-ho replies to the Healer’s request for information, advising him to be particularly wary of Secretary Oh. He also adds the order for the Healer to not contact Young-shin personally.
Then he assigns Young-shin and Jung-hoo (dude, couple sweaters!) to interview Yeon-hee and asks for a detective to whom they can submit the evidence, so as to prevent the other side from obstructing the case. Young-shin knows of one such character, having run into Investigator Yoon while staking out Hwang.
Then Moon-ho introduces his buddy to the team, and Editor Jang is still unable to understand why these elites would choose to come here. Moon-ho prods Jong-soo to tell them what he’d confessed earlier: that he came to spy for Moon-shik. Aw, so he couldn’t backstab his sunbae after all! I wanted to be able to keep liking him, and now I’m glad I can.
Young-shin gripes about Moon-ho on the car ride over to the interview, asking if it’s so hard for him to praise her a little for staying up all night researching. All that work catches up to her and she nods off in her seat, and as her head starts to fall, Jung-hoo carefully reaches over to prop it up with his hand.
He drives like that all the way to Young-shin’s house, where he finds weird gangster-looking ajusshis hanging about. He’s just about to back away before they’re seen, but Young-shin awakes and lights up, darting out to greet her ex-con ajusshi uncles. The mood is adorably energetic as they fawn over her, until grumpy Dad shoos them away for scaring off his customers. Jung-hoo watches this all with bemusement that gradually turns to amusement.
Over at the SS office, Sang-soo assures Secretary Oh that he and his team are up to the task. Then he gives his guys an hour to accomplish their goal, and they get to work manipulating a voice clip taken from Moon-ho’s news broadcast.
Dad again asks Yeon-hee if she’s okay to go through with the interview, even if her face will be pixelated onscreen. He knows how the other side’s attorney will attack, and giving an interview could have adverse effects on her. But Yeon-hee remains firm, reminding him that she isn’t concerned with preserving her reputation; all she wants is to take them down.
Dad asks for some time to discuss things with Yeon-hee before giving the interview, and they step aside. Young-shin asks Jung-hoo if he can handle the camera equipment, and he meekly just says he’s sure it’ll work out. Ha. He surreptitiously links in to Min-ja, who adds that his father was reportedly a whiz with machines too.
She reads him Moon-ho’s reply email, including that addendum about not making personal contact with Young-shin. I think we all know Healer well enough by now to see that this is exactly the kind of thing to spur his rebellious streak, and he just scoffs.
Young-shin leans over to examine the camera setup, and as she looks at the equipment, he looks over at her. He reaches out with a finger, and she looks at him in puzzlement as he lightly touches her forehead. “What are you doing?” she asks. “Contact,” he replies. “Personal contact.” LOL. He is such a teenager sometimes.
Min-ja practically rolls her eyes, then mentions the Teacher asking a strange question earlier about whether he preferred fruit or chocolate. Is it some kind of a code? But Jung-hoo has no clue.
Young-shin puts on a record and starts mugging for the camera, which confuses Jung-hoo. She tells him to let it go because she’s in a heavy mood, all while sending funny faces at the camera. Then she assumes a serious journalist’s mien as she runs through a mic test, mock-reporting: “Hello everyone. You are looking at a woman who has been rejected by her Crushes 1 and 2 simultaneously, who is here with clear mind to report all the same.”
Jung-hoo’s expression sharpens as he registers this. She continues: “Number 1 called this woman a human shield, and Number 2 thinks of her as a delusional attention seeker. However, let us forget this readily. Like a sad dream conjured in the middle of the night, which goes like darkness at the light of dawn. Let us forget. Let us pretend it never happen—”
She stumbles before finishing. Jung-hoo looks up at her with those eyes (those eyes), and she blinks back tears and chatters quickly about the weather.
The interview begins, and Yeon-hee names names and tells her story frankly. Young-shin starts light and increases the pressure, asking if she went along to entertain the assemblyman because she thought she’d be rewarded with favors later. It’s a little strong, so she backs off and moves on, but Yeon-hee answers anyway, saying that Young-shin doesn’t know the fear so she can talk about it so easily. She says that those people are capable of doing anything to protect their interests.
Secretary Oh confirms that whatever scheme he’s put the SS team on, it’s ready to go.
Meanwhile, Jung-hoo finally gets a call from his Teacher, who asks if he prefers chocolate or sweet potatoes. He tells him to go home immediately if he wants to meet, because Teacher’s only waiting five minutes. Jung-hoo’s exit is stopped by ajusshi, who tells him to take lunch with him, and a glimpse at the pastry case jars Jung-hoo’s memory—it’s his birthday. So that’s what Old Fogey Teacher was rattling on about?
Moon-ho calls Young-shin to the office, because an informant has surfaced. She heads out immediately, following his directions to a particular location… and we see that this is the SS tech team’s doing. Gack, they’ve doctored Moon-ho’s voice using his broadcasts, and she’s none the wiser. Fake Moon-ho directs her to turn off her phone as well, to evade potential tracking, and she complies.
Then the real Moon-ho gets a call from an unknown number. It’s a random schoolboy, who reads a note provided by Secretary Oh warning him not to forget that he owes the family who raised him, and that he cannot throw it away over one bad woman, and that his family is awaiting his return.
Alarmed, Moon-ho tries calling Young-shin and gets no reply. So he sends Healer an email outlining the details, and Jung-hoo screeches the car to a halt and orders ajumma to locate Young-shin via the tracker in her bag. He hears the direction and zooms off in a hurry. So does Moon-ho.
Secretary Oh prepares the next phase of his eeeevil plan by entering a building dressed as a construction worker, and starts to tamper with some kind of machinery. That’s the building Young-shin arrives at, although the front doors are locked. That forces her to go around to find an open door, and she enters cautiously, looking for Moon-ho.
She finds the one elevator that will work—the one that Secretary Oh has just messed with. She steps inside, and the elevator begins its ascent. Once it’s in motion, Secretary Oh opens the cable box and snips a wire.
Suddenly, the elevator jolts and clangs to a stop, while the lights flicker off. Then, it starts to free-fall—with nine stories between her and death. The elevator stops after a short drop, but it doesn’t look like it’ll hold for long.
Driving like a maniac, Jung-hoo arrives at the building and heads inside the same way. He hears the elevator gears as it begins a second fall, running in that direction as it catches a second time. He bangs on the doors at the bottom and she hears it, screaming out for help.
Jung-hoo starts running up the staircase, and Secretary Oh, who’s heading down, hears the approach with enough time to duck aside.
Young-shin fights to tamp down her mounting panic, but she can feel the precarious hold on the elevator and starts to hyperventilate. Jung-hoo arrives on the rooftop and quickly clips emergency cords in place, wearing one end as a harness, and runs to the elevator shaft.
Opening the doors manually, he sees the car stuck halfway down and leaps into the shaft, guided by the cables, and lands atop the car with a thud that makes Young-shin scream.
He opens the door and drops into the elevator next to her, just as the last of the cables give way and start snapping. He quickly pulls her cap down over her eyes and belts her into the harness, then grabs hold of her with one arm and the cable with the other.
The elevator begins its final plummet, literally falling away around them as they are pulled upward.
Jung-hoo assists Young-shin onto the rooftop, but once they’re there she flings off his arm angrily. Aw, she’s still embarrassed.
She yells at him for risking his life, and then says in a wavering voice that she’s grateful for his help, “But if we fell together, we would have both died!” More to the point, he would have died, and just because of her.
Her eyes still covered, she asks if he’s still here and reaches out a hand just as she did the other day. He steps back before she makes contact but she figures he’s still around and says that even though Moon-ho paid him for his work, she doesn’t have the money to pay him back for saving her life. “I’m sorry,” she says quietly. “Thank you.”
Without saying anything, he drops her bag at her feet and starts walking away. But he stops after a few steps, registering the snow that’s started to fall.
His voiceover repeats earlier sentiments: “After becoming alone, up till now, I haven’t wished for anything from another person. And so, I was fine.”
Below, Moon-ho arrives outside the building and heads inside. Jung-hoo continues: “I didn’t care at all whether anyone understood or misunderstood me. I was like that.”
But past tense is past tense, and he suddenly whirls around, walking purposely toward Young-shin. He pulls off his gloves and folds up her hat, just enough to see the bottom half of her face. He stops short of her eyes… and leans in… and kisses her.
COMMENTS
I’m sorry, am I supposed to write comments and make sense after that? Surely you don’t expect me to be useful at this point, do you? Not when all I want to do is rewind the last ten minutes and watch it fifty times?
Okay, fine, let’s be professional and all that. Pull it together, ‘beans.
Let’s start with the older generation, whose layers continue to be peeled back one by one—yet again, deft handling by the writing here. It’s difficult to maintain mystery without being too cryptic on one hand, or revealing too much and flattening out the tension on the other. So I’m content to see each character introduced in stages, so that we get to see how they fit into the larger picture by degrees. Obviously Jung-hoo’s father was a victim and not the aggressor, but I’m still curious to know exactly how the betrayal went, and in what order.
Despite Moon-shik being a pretty clear villain, I like that he doesn’t seem to be a black-and-white sort of guy. Yes, he’s guilty as sin: If he didn’t outright kill his friends, he still bore responsibility for their demises, not to mention the present-day hits he’s ordering as a part of his clean-up job. His hands are unclean and bloodstained, and he doesn’t seem all too torn up about killing Go Sung-chul, for instance. But I don’t want him to be this flat mastermind whose life was consumed by an obsessive love for a woman he had to have. That’s too simple and I don’t buy it, and I don’t think the show means to take that route either.
I’d rather see Moon-shik as a tragic figure—the guy who had every capacity to be a hero, but made every bad choice. I don’t think redemption has to be in his cards, but his complexity is what I find fascinating about him—I don’t care when he’s smug and in perfect control, but I do feel sucked in when he hallucinates his friends and actually seems afraid. I want to see him come to an understanding that he was completely wrong, and I want to have him wish for his soul, only to realize he’s already sold it.
As for the romance, I’m trying to pinpoint what about Jung-hoo and Young-shin make it so exciting and giddy-making, because its parts alone don’t explain it—we’ve seen these elements time and time again, and in some dramas I find them trite and unmoving, while in others I’m squealing at my screen and hugging myself.
I always love when the romantic journey plays off other elements of the story, and Healer gives us that. This isn’t to say a pure romantic storyline wouldn’t work well, but things are always more fun when you add layers and faces and dimension. (A single light may shine, but there’s something extra satisfying about holding up a gem to the light and finding unexpected glints coming through from other facets.)
Both Jung-hoo and Young-shin have some growing up to do on their own, and their connection is more like a collective group of smaller connections. They’re friends, colleagues, fellow survivors of abandonment—and then there’s the extra connection they don’t even know about, with regard to their childhoods. Jung-hoo has voiced the same sentiment a few times now, that he used to feel a certain way, and is starting to change his mind about them.
I don’t get the sense that it’s as simple as “I like her so I feel differently,” but that the things he can’t abide in other people don’t apply to her, because she’s a kindred spirit. When somebody comes at him from a certain perspective, he has a tendency to dig in his heels and rebel, as we see with Min-ja and Teacher. But when that person is seeing things through your own eyes, whether you mean for them to see that or not, you can’t have the same response, because now their view is your view. Sometimes that’s all it takes.

Thank you once again for the recap! As I watched this ep., I kept thinking, “Oh my feels!!!!!!” It’s not something I say often, however with drama episodes like ep.8, I understand why people say that (at times). At times, this drama keeps me on the edge of my seat, like when PBS and KMH were rushing to save CYS, even though I knew that she would be safe by the end of the ep. I just loved how that scene was executed and shot. I will also add that I LOVE the instrumental pieces in this show (and the other songs [with lyrics] are good as well). Besides the one we have been asking about, the drama has added some instrumental songs that are really good, and played at appropriate times.
I have a confession to make: when I went to a website to watch this ep. raw, I couldn’t miss the comments about the kiss. So I did what a romantic and curious woman would do, I dragged the needle to the last 10mns of the ep., and I watched the ending 1st (twice), then I watched the ep. from the beginning. I am hoping that we will see more of the kiss in the beginning of ep.9. B/c of scenes like the kiss scene, it is (very) good to be a part of a community of Kdrama lovers, b/c being able to squee about said kisses and other romantic or skinship scenes enhances the experience of the ep. imho. And this is one of the many reasons why I (really) do not mind dissecting dramas :-)
Last time I saw JCW kissing his co-star, it was in SD, so quite a while ago for me (and I don’t remember those kisses well). One of the many things I really LOVE about watching Kdramas, is that usually, the kisses are few and between (compared to say US and French series), and so the anticipation of kisses NEVER gets old for me. It’s not only the kiss that I anticipate, it is HOW the 1st kiss STARTS, aka, the leading up to it, AND the 1st few secs of the kiss. So I was very curious about how JCW was going to start his kiss. I loved that SJH (and his aliases) managed to save CYS on time. I loved how he confidently strode away from her, not caring about clearing up the misunderstanding. I loved how, after feeling the snow, he stopped, turned around, and walked BACK confidently to CYS (I love watching JCW and Park Sang-won walk. JCW can strut his stuff). I LOVED how when SJH/Healer came back to CYS, everything he did was (then) slow, gentle, and deliberate (Kyaa!). He took his time, and there was a softness and sensuality (RE: the kiss), that just emanated from his actions. I don’t know if JCW was acting (maybe he was), but I LOVED the whole scene. The gifs are even better, b/c we can better see the kiss. Man! As someone said during the MLFAS days, this is one of the reasons why Kdramas can get some of us in trouble, LOL! I am soooo glad I don’t have to squee about this kiss alone.

This might be a small detail, however I loved that Healer hesitated before kissing CYS (lingering on that moment), deciding that he didn’t want her to forget about him, after all. And JCW went for the lower lip 1st! I have noticed that some K. actors start their kisses in dramas that way, going for the lower lip 1st. This kiss scene reminded me of the kiss in Pinocchio, (b/c of the snow), and it reminded me of the kiss in SKKS, b/c of how slow and deliberate that kiss started as well (in ep.17, I think). I have run out of space, so I will have to talk about the other things that happened in the ep. later. I also have to confess that I thought we would be trolled, RE: this kiss, when I watched the preview. I didn’t think it would really happen.

Hi GB,
I am glad that you agree that dissecting the kiss is fun, b/c it actually is, and as I said earlier, one can learn so much about the characters AND about the actors and actresses when watching kiss scenes and the BTS of kiss scenes. You can often see the comfort levels of the actor and actress doing the kiss scene, you can see (sometimes) who is into the kiss more (and vice versa, who is into it less), etc... It has also been interesting to me to read interviews actors and actresses have given, when it comes to that topic.
I also personally believe that many (or maybe some) actors and actresses have a "style" or an approach to kissing (even if it is just on camera). That can also depend on who their acting partner is, however, I have found that I can also tell when an actor/actress is being mindful of the person s/he is kissing, and of his/her reactions. Also, when the kiss did not go as expected, I have seen (a few times) one of the parties have a questioning look. It is interesting, and you can actually see it. So, this whole kissing as part of an acting role can be quite telling.
So that being said, I did focus on other things besides the kiss in this ep., I just wanted to put my thoughts about the kiss out there 1st, and I have never written at such length about a kiss before, at least not on a blog. I did think that the rescue scene before the rooftop scene was awesome, even though I got lost as to how things actually really happened (I didn't fully understand how Healer managed to get into the elevator and saved CYS), so I was not going to discuss it 1st. I was glad that JB understood, and that she could write about it. I do have some questions, however:
1-How did KMS figure out that CYS must be/might be Ji-han? What tipped him off about her? I was not too sure about that, b/c KMH never gave her name, he just said that she might still be alive. Was it the fact that she wrote that interview? And was it the fact that KMH chose to work at SDN (Someday News), of all places? I can see why KMS asked to dig into CYS's past, however I want to understand better his thought process about her.
2-Why does CYS feel embarrassed RE: Healer? I read that Healer probably kissed her to clear up the misunderstanding (so I wrote that), however I am still not really sure what the misunderstanding is. I think that her questions about whether he was her dad or her brother made sense (in ep.7), from her POV. What did she assume Healer saw her as, after she found out that KMH knew Healer and had hired him? She mentioned feeling pitiful.
3-Why doesn't KMH want Healer to contact CYS? He just helped her (and SDN) by getting and giving them the evidence of predt Hwang's activities (of his girls, with some very powerful men). Can someone explain KMH's reasoning to me, please?
4-Any speculations as to why CYS would be KMS's "weakness?" I mean besides the fact that it would destroy his relationship with his wife. Elder sounded...

@ GB, end of my post:
4-Any speculations as to why CYS would be KMS's "weakness?" I mean besides the fact that it would destroy his relationship with his wife. Elder sounded like CYS was his Achille's heel.

Hi Ivoire
I can maybe answer only some of your questions.
1-"How did KMS figure out that CYS must be/might be Ji-han?"
I admit I'm not sure about this. There was a convergence of incidents starting with the question of Ji An's empty grave. Healer had shaken MS up with his threat and Myung Hee had awakened the memory of Joon Seok and those associated with the past including Jung Hoo and Ji An. He has been keeping tabs on Moon Ho too and knows that he has done something unprecedented in buying Someday and has been taking an interest in Young Shin. Putting 2 and 2 together, he decides to find out and gets the confirmation.
2-"Why does CYS feel embarrassed RE: Healer?"
The answer is given very nicely by yuppie in comment 17 below and I also mentioned about the same thing in
comment 60.1.1. She felt pitiful because she thought he had been saving her because he cared for her as family but when Moon Ho admitted to hiring Healer, her hopes were dashed, thinking that Healer was only doing his job. She had spoken to him the day before and felt embarrassed by her questions to him about him being family. Also Moon Ho made it seem that what Healer did was just a routine background check and nothing special, in fact Moon Ho claimed that he did the check because she was a bullet proof vest to him. So she felt pathetic and was even more embarrassed. (Poor kid)
3- "Why doesn’t KMH want Healer to contact CYS?"
My guess is that he has just found out that Healer made contact with YS, that it is raising a lot of questions, that she is upset that he hired Healer and that she was regretting asking Healer questions. To Moon Ho it could also be to keep Young Shin from finding out more and he may have felt that Healer had exceeded instructions by meeting her and passing on the hard drive. To avoid more of this, he instructs Healer not to make contact.
4-"Any speculations as to why CYS would be KMS’s “weakness?” "
Any person who might make a 'faithful dog' decide not to obey the master is anathema to people like the Elder. Elder seems to know about Moon Shik's overwhelming guilt and how it is tied to Ji An. Having her around would affect MS's judgement and make him maybe a loose canon. We see already that the info on her brought up the 'ghosts' of Joon Seok and Gil Han and shook him up plenty. So in that sense, having her around would make him an unstable ally. Weakness here means he has a weakness for her ie would change his behaviour because of his emotional baggage attached to her.
Happy New Year! It's 1 Jan 2015 over at my side!!!

As an addendum to what was posted by GB: -
3- “Why doesn’t KMH want Healer to contact CYS?”
2 different reasons which may not be exclusive. KMH could see that CYS was deeply affected by her meeting with Healer - she felt dirty, humiliated, pitiful, embarrassed even, but that was only after being told Healer was paid to do what he did. Before, she thought Healer acted as he did for her own sake. There's a real possibility that CYS may develop feelings for Healer, guy with a dangerous, secretive, shadowy job. Anybody closely connected to such a person will also be in danger. To protect CYS, remove the possibility of emotional attachments by prohibiting contact - protect, but stay out of sight. That's the protective 'uncle' in him.
The other reason is removal of a perceived competition - KMH himself may be harbouring feelings for CYS. KMH adores, if not loves Myung-hee, so much so that he can't bring himself to call her other than Noona. He was there at CYS' birth, when as a new born, she grabbed his fingers and he kissed her hands. Even if there was no transfer of his adoration/love of MH to CYS, his feelings for CYS could have started then. Removing the competition would be the 'man' in him. Creepy maybe, but KMH is so layered that his feelings towards CYS has always been ambiguous.

Just wanted to reply to 1 since the rest have been dissected so carefully.
He figured out CYS was Ji Han because of their background (in being adopted). CYS was found at the age of 5 (the same age Ji Han was lost) in a garbage truck dump and could not speak (which was how he had 'left' Ji Han). Given that their ages are the same, and that Moon Ho had earlier tipped his hand by paying an inordinate amount of attention to her AND had kept talking about Ji Han, I don't think it's too far of a stretch to say he made the connection quite quickly and accurately.

Great exposition patinalee! I was struggling with a smidgeon of that idea but just could not develop it...and gave it up... I felt that there was a protective aspect (protect her, protect himself) to that "Do not make contact" order. You've put it properly into words.
Good to have 'teamwork' to flesh out this idea. :)

About how YS feels RE: Healer
I just got to watch with different subs. YS was doing the camera test and said her 2nd one-sided crush saw her as a delusional attention seeker. So that's what she thought Healer thought of her. She had asked him if he had saved her for her own sake and had asked if they were related....in that way sort of confessing that she hoped for more of a relationship.
He had responded with the warning not to trust/follow people who came close to her. From with Moon Ho she discovers that she must have sounded daft to Healer since it was only a commission to keep her safe. She has revealed too much to Healer and is embarrassed.
Sorry for the long-windedness. Just thought of that to add on after seeing more subs on Tiveee.

Hello, Ivoire! It's so nice to read your comments again. Also, I am sorry, I just realized that I hadn't been able to respond to your last post in our previous exchange.
Agreed. I thought the kiss they shared is special because of 1. the events that led to it (holy schmoly epic elevator Superman action scene), 2. the meaning behind it (Jung Hoo wanting to clear up the misunderstanding between the two of them) and 3. Jung Hoo finally giving in to his pent-up feelings.

Hellooooo Omomo~ Sorry for the late response. Better late than sorry, I say :-) PART1:
It is wonderful to connect with you again. I know I did not comment on the epis. 5 &6 recaps, b/c I was so busy, and the internet was down at her house the Monday that ep.5 was shown. So I couldn’t watch the ep., and I could not get online to comment You know, about this, “Also, I am sorry, I just realized that I hadn’t been able to respond to your last post in our previous exchange, I totally understand, so you don’t need to worry. If you were ever itching to respond to those comments however, please feel free to do so, and just let me know that you have responded (and please copy and paste the info of said post in a current recap, so I would know where to look for it, ie your screen name, the # of the post, and the date). That way, I could go back to that recap, and look for your post, and comment, if needed. That is what I do, when I respond to an old post. I really don’t mind going back to read or respond to old posts, to be honest, just so you know. I just need to know that new posts have been added, really.
I like the reasons you list to explain the importance of that kiss scene, though I would add to that list (if I may): 1-I agree with you that the elevator scene was epic and so well done, though I will admit to have wanted to understand that scene better. So, Healer got into the elevator from the top, right? He opened the elevator box from the top, and he let himself down (and he was sliding down all the floors [of the box]) with the help of the many emergency cords he gathered at the top of the building, right? That rescue scene is the kind of scenes I would like to watch in slow motion, so I can really see what happened. OK, so then Healer got close to CYS, I think he either put a cord on her, or he only had the one on himself, but he managed to pull her into his arms (and close to his body), so he could hold her tight, so they could leave together (I rewatched the ep., I think Healer put the cord on CYS, and then he held on to her, and lifted both of them up in the air). What I didn’t understand, was how they left. Did Healer pull on the cords, and the cords just lifted him (if so, how?) That was confusing to me, can you please explain? (If you understood better than I did).
1-So yes, the rescue scene was awesome, and I loved how quickly Healer reacted and responded. 2-You know, as I watched the ep. with subs (finally!), I came to realize that to me, the kiss in this ep. was quite significant, b/c of everything that lead up to it, not only in this ep. but more so since the 1st ep. Hindsight, as they say, is 20/20 and remembering some of what I watched and heard since the 1st ep., I was able to see that Healer actually craves and longs for “intimacy” with someone, and she happens to be CYS. That became quite clear in this ep.

@ Omomo, PART 2:
At 1st, I thought I didn’t understand Healer, that I read him wrong, but that was not correct. I actually read him right from the beginning. I went and reread my 1st comment on the ep.4 recap, and it was interesting to me that I was questioning whether I was reading too much into Healer’s behavior or not (I now don’t think I was). I also mentioned how lonely Healer felt (to me) at the time. I hesitated, about Healer being lonely (in the early episodes), b/c he spoke as if that had been a choice he had made, and to a great extent, he had. That decision also helped greatly in his line of work, so at 1st I bought into his “I don’t need anyone” reasoning.
The more I watched the drama, the more I realized that Healer had buried his feelings really deeply, and he believed that he was OK. I also realized that he would actually enjoy the company of (a few, [maybe well chosen]) others. His reaction to Teacher, wanting to celebrate his birthday, showed us that. So to me, the kiss has come to be about more than simply clearing up the misunderstanding. It is also, as you aptly put it, about Healer giving in to how he actually feels about CYS (and yes, about him letting her know that as well). And as we know, “Yes!” he cares (deeply) for CYS, however he is also falling (deeply) in love with her, as we have been witnessing. I look forward to seeing the beginning of ep.9, and seeing what happens after the kiss (I am very curious about that).
I also feel that JH giving in to his feelings must have been liberating to him. Those feelings were bottled up inside, and they would weigh on the person carrying them. Now, we know that the kiss doesn’t solve everything between JH and CYS (not at this point in the drama, at least), however it must have felt good (to both) to experience it.

Hi Ivoire
About that rescue, a few of us were commenting on it. We feel that he had the makeshift harness with him which he put around YS. He also wrapped part of the line around himself and held on so that his weight was included in that harness. Then when the lift dropped, he grabbed the right cable which was attached to the falling lift but through a pulley above, so that it would pull him up while the lift crashed. :)

Again, sorry for responding a bit late. I was too preoccupied with laughing at the hilarious comments on the third page of this thread, that I forgot to go back to the first page. Ehehe.
Actually, the elevator scene went by so FAST, I had to watch it several times so my brain could process it. Still, I think it defied all logic because there was just no way Jung Hoo could have predicted what cord (it was too dark!) to pull on unless he has night-vision. The only explanation I can think of as to why he managed to somehow carry his weight along with Young Shin is that his arms have superhuman strength (the cord was tied around YS and not on him, I think, so really in a normal situation, JH should have been helplessly hanging on her body).
Ah yes. Most definitely. That kiss was a great defining moment for Jung Hoo. Character development wise, I think of it as a milestone for him, for finally deciding to do something for himself and for taking the first giant leap in caring for another person deeply in a long time.

Hello guys! (I should probably say gals and guys, maybe?)
Thank you so much for your responses, which I truly appreciate. I wondered if I would come across as a pervert, with my post (since I wrote mostly about the kiss, so far). It turns out that I am not the only one interested in kisses in Kdramas, and in film in general (who knew? :-) )
The truth is for me, kisses tell me so much, not only about the characters, and where they are at in the story, but also about the actors/actresses portraying those characters. If you don't believe me, read some of their interviews about kissing scenes, and you will find out that for some (both males or females), kiss scenes can be intimidating, and challenging. They might have to act, yet that "acting" is done by a real person, who needs to also project certain emotions (such as crying while kissing, passion, desire, hate, longing, etc...) So while we (the audience) might focus on the kiss, I have come to realize that at times, the actor/actress has to think about, and perform more than that. So finding out about what even doing a kissing scene takes (at times), has been interesting, and eye-opening to me.
I will be back later to respond and comment. I have been having the worst computer problems in the past few weeks, and it is a miracle that I have not thrown my computer on the floor yet, and broken it. Some of you responded to my comments on ep.7 recap (KDaddict, GB for example), and I will get back to those, as well as respond to the comments here. I usually read the comments until a new recap is up (so until Monday evening for Healer), and even after that, and I comment until then as well. Please feel free to do the same, that is if you are (still) interested in what I have to say (and write :-) ) If there are no posts from me, it means that my computer got the best of me (stopped working), or that work swallowed me up, or both. Fingers crossed that doesn't happen :-)
I will leave you with a MV of SKKS which, like many Kdramas, have made me appreciate what skinship is, what it can mean, and how and why "being slow and deliberate," can look so appealing. Amazing how we can convey a lot, without being all "in your face" about it. Enjoy! Interestingly, PMY was in SKKS :-) That actress has had some good male actors to act with. And may I just say (I just realized it, watching the MV), PYC has some really nice lips. OK, I will stop there... :-) (though he does... :-) )
Also, the song to the MV is one of my ALL time favorite songs, by IU and SSK.

I think I marvel at kisses in Kdramas in part b/c of how creative the writers and directors (and actors at times) can be with such kisses. Some of the kisses (or almost kisses) in Kdramas, I haven't seen in US (or French) series, or movies. And the viewers (or is it the people in the dramas?) name the kinds kisses that take place, sth I was unfamiliar with, until I started watching kdramas, and looking at BTS footage, and reading comments on blogs and on YT (the Sofa Kiss, the Game Over Kiss, the Refrigerator Kiss, The Bread Kiss, the Chewing Gum Kiss, etc…). The importance given to emotions (and their portrayal) in kiss scenes and in acting in general in Korea, never fails to impress me. It is b/c of that importance, that I can partly understand what happens in epis. of Kdramas that I watch raw, like this one.

Hello GB, and Happy Belated New Year to you!!!!!
I have a few more questions I will post here, with the hope that you will see them. Here they are:
1-Healer pretended to have brought the sheets (from his investigation) with him, right? (when he went into the office).
2-When Healer sent the email (via Min-Ja), it said, “this isn’t it?” What was the “it?”
3-Why does CYS need to be KMH's bulletproof shield (or person)? What did he mean by that?
4-Min-ja said: “why don’t you take a dump?” to Healer, when he made physical contact with CYS (when he touched her). I loved the way he smiled at her, and looked at her, as he did that. Do you know what MJ meant by that, please?
5-When Healer was by the river bank, what brought about his sadness? He looked sad, down and depressed. He said that he didn’t want attention and understanding from others, but at that time, CYS had not called yet (Maybe that was to let the viewers know how Healer felt, about being pitied by people?) Was he there (at the river bank) b/c of what Teacher told him about MH noona? (Healer finding out that she knew his dad, before he passed away). I am safe to assume that the experience with MH noona rattled him, right? Or did that just left him intrigued?
6-Why does Healer sometimes speak formally or informally to CYS (going back and forth), instead of sticking to one form of speaking. Does that mean anything?
Also, CYS asked him why he was using honorifics, and he said, “I can’t do that?” Was he trying to distance himself from her, by doing that (at that moment)?

Hi Ivoire
I caught a glimpse of your post even before I saw your email. OK, let's see...
1) Yes, Healer just grabbed the papers that happened to be on the desk outside the office and barged into the office, pretending that he had his notes with him.
2)The "This isn't it" was not part of the email. The subs are showing us what Healer was saying in the background, although what we are shown is the laptop screen. He was referring to the papers he brought in... that he did not know that those were the wrong papers. The email that popped up only showed the sender and not the message.
3) Moon Ho was giving an excuse/reason for why he had YS protected by Healer. He said that he needed her to front the stories instead of him (he said he wanted another news outlet and so bought Someday News which was not associated with him), to take the bullets/be the shield when the stories raised protests. He had to keep her safe so that she could be his shield. This hurt/upset her.
4) LOL! I do not know for sure .... maybe toilet humor? Min Ja was saying you're talking crap/acting like crap which she put into words literally? LOL! Yes I love that look in his eyes and that smile.
5) Yes realizing that Myung Hee knew his dad and Teacher's reveal that Myung Hee was the girl in the photo brought back memories of when he was abandoned. Also it may have made it clear that much was hidden from him by Teacher who had also abandoned him. The trauma of being a child of a father who had committed suicide and of a mother who had left him and remarried made him want to disappear from public view so that he would not have to face pity, taunts etc. He was definitely rattled/upset and it was shown in his depressed low voice.
6) I have to check back... but I believe when Bong Soo first met YS, she was the one who told him to just relax as her hoobae, and I think that meant they could just use panmal (informal speech) instead of chundemal (standard polite) forms of speaking.
In his upset state of mind, he might have been distancing himself or just that he felt distanced from her emotionally, and so used chundemal instead, probably by accident. YS noted this and brought it up so he realised that he was sounding too stiff all of a sudden and went back to panmal.
Hope that makes sense! :) Catch you when you can post again!

Hi Ivoire
About 6) ... I have to correct myself!!!
I was checking backwards...took me so long... In Ep 3, Bong Soo starts working with YS and it's the other way around, she tells him to treat her as a sunbae with respect. In later episodes, he forgets and speaks to her in panmal and she asks him at different times, "Did you just speak to me in informal speech?"...one of those times he denied it but he did. So she was used to him speaking panmal and in Ep 8 when he suddenly became formal, she noticed it. :)

Hi back GB~
And thank you for your prompt response, and for double checking on that. You are simply one of the best, when it comes to digging info and explaining things that happen in dramas.
Yeah, so I was a little surprised, when he asked her if he couldn't do that (speak formally to her). And it wasn't as much that he had said that, as much as it was what he looked like when he said it (his face, and the tone of his voice). JCW is doing a really good job at constantly showing the viewer where Healer might be at emotionally, at any given time, and I love that about his performance in this drama. What I want to make sure of is that I know or understand where Healer is at emotionally, at any given time, so I can follow the drama along better.
I also agree with your explanation (this time around), it totally makes sense. Thank you again! Did you go back and rewatch parts of ep.3 (to explain and correct yourself), or did you just go back and reread ep.3 recap? (I am just curious).

Hey again, GB~
I am responding to this (your response to my 2nd batch of questions): 1.5.1 Growingbeautifully January 3rd, 2015 at 7:41 PM
1-OK!
2-WOW! I am glad you understood that (that lost me). Great job explaining, btw! I love that this drama pays attention to the details it introduces us to, b/c some of us do pay attention to as many things happening in one ep. as we possibly can. Sometimes, writers in dramas introduce us to things or side plots they don't bother to explain, or drop at some point (as you know, I am sure). And when they do that, it feels as though they think we (the audience), were not paying attention, or that we don't care. So far, PBS has been very consistent in the way he has been written (and JCW just nails him), and so have been all the other characters (been written in a consistent manner). I LOVE that PBS is fleshed out with so many details (and so are the other characters).
3-OK! Now I understand better.
4-See, this is why I love your explanations, GB! You make sense of things. Have you noticed how Healer looks at CYS? He has that longing in his eyes (often), when he looks at her. And there is also tenderness and gentleness (when Healer looks at CYS), which I want to believe JCW has, as a person. I could be wrong, but he seems to have those qualities himself (in real life).
5-Great explanation again, GB! And about this, " He was definitely rattled/upset and it was shown in his depressed low voice," I TOTALLY agree. His voice sounded totally depressed and low, I am glad you caught on, on that. Do you watch the drama with headphones on? I do, always (unless I am watching on KBS World TV). Healer started on KBS World, and it has been interesting to rewatch the early epis. I see things I had not seen before, and that is great. I love that (though I wish I had noticed those things the 1st time around).
6-I liked this, "In his upset state of mind, he might have been distancing himself or just that he felt distanced from her emotionally, and so used chundemal instead, probably by accident," which made sense to me. I also think that Healer might have wanted to distance himself from the (whole) world, after what he had just found out. He looked very upset, driving fast on his way to the riverbank. And when he explained why he didn't want attention and understanding, him being upset made sense. And when she called, he became formal with her.

"Have you noticed how Healer looks at CYS? He has that longing in his eyes (often), when he looks at her. And there is also tenderness and gentleness (when Healer looks at CYS), which I want to believe JCW has, as a person."
Tenderness/gentleness - As far as I can see from his interviews, he does seem like that. We have not seen him in a bad mood or when angry or with a girl whom he admits liking etc :D so don't know about the longing looks ... as far as we can tell from times when he is more himself and not acting, he seems like a regular nice guy.
"Do you watch the drama with headphones on?"
Yes I do... which is the reason why when I lol in the relative silence, people (read family) think I'm mad.
For 6 - I think your explanation is better than mine LOL! He was hurting... he had driven off to be by himself and get away from the world.... he was not ready to answer the phone actually as he probably still wanted to be alone and so was not quite his Bong Soo self when he answered the phone. Yup, I think that's it!!! :)

Javabeans,
Thank you, sincerely, for introducing me to this drama. If not for your recaps, I would have never given this drama genre a chance. And HOT DAMN, THE FEELS.
There were so many amazing moments in this episode, and not just between our main pairing (though I must say those are my favorite). That seen between Young-shin and her father's rehabilitated clients was adorable. Monday and Tuesday I am completely engrossed in this show. Wednesday through Sunday I'm re-watching episodes, re-reading recaps, and consuming anything else I can get my desperate little hands on. It's mayhem over here.
I hope the actors have even an inkling of how happy they have made me. GOD BLESS YOU, HEALER. Halle-fucking-lujah, Ji Chang-wook.

Because just thinking about that beautiful and romantic kiss (not to mention, the badass saving right before *swoon*) literally sends me into fits of happy spazzing. 'Cause you guys started talking about resemblances, i had one which was just under my tongue, and couldn't just keep it any longer:
Am I the only one who thinks Ji Chang Wook looks like Lee Min Ho? And his role in this drama is so much like LMH's City Hunter?
Though JCW doesn't look like LMH in city hunter but anyway I see a blowing away resemblance.
Could this be one of the reasons that PMY chose to play in this drama, 'cause it remembered of Kim Nana? A, and don't forget to mention that it was after City Hunter when LMH and PMY announced they were together.
Just saying, don't missunderstand. I am a fan PMY and I like her with JCW, though it's the first time when I see him. He's doing great btw.

I loved how, as someone who could not verbally speak to or show his face to her, the only thing he could do... or rather.. he did the very one thing which answered all her questions (which Healer and Moon Ho both did not answer her on when she asked about the taking of her DNA) AND also dispelled her misunderstanding of his actions towards her, through that one tender kiss alone:
- that he was not her biological father;
- that he was not her biological brother; and
- that he did not do all these things for her merely on the instruction of his client (Moon Ho).
And this is why I loved how Healer's running narrative throughout the show was also beautifully intertwined with the rooftop scene. That for someone who did not care if anyone else misunderstood him, this is someone whom, for the first time, he does not want to misunderstand him, nor does he want her to forget him.
The writing of the show is so intricate and well-thought, it is just beautiful <3

I totally 100% agree with your comments, it is so true that he doesn't want her to misunderstand him nor forget, because her caring and concern for him means soo much to him, he can't go back to the aloft don't need anyone person. He needs Young Shin and her love for him. He was saving and protecting her long before he was requested to do it, but she has no idea. Everything he does for her, is him being a man doing what he can for the woman he cares for,
I'm a big time fan now of Ji Chang Wook, swooning and squeeing and all giddy cozof the hot onscreen chemistry, just wow, awesome drama, fantastically amazingly gripping and makes me so emotionally invested in these characters. happy and smiling like a crazy person. :)

My thoughts exactly. She would have had to have her eyes closed or she'd be able to see him clearly enough. We will be able to tell from her reactions to Bong Sook in the next episode, whether or not she had her eyes opened or closed, after all hers is the most unmasked, open, natural character of the lot and her eyes will tell all.

I noticed that YS started to take her hat off, but when PBS/Healer quickly turned away to hide his face, she stopped and pulled the hat back down over her face. Did she simply sense him moving away, or do you think she saw him and stopped to keep him from running away?

I'd guess that to begin with her eyes were open and she naturally wanted to see properly so she was going to pull the hat off. She could probably have seen the silhouette of him turning away quickly and realised that if she took the hat off, he would disappear. :)

@ Merce and @ GB~
I rewatched that scene, and I agree with @ Merce. She did start to take her hat off, and then, it looked like she realized something (like some of you said, that he turned around), or she thought of something (like, Healer would want to keep his privacy), and she then stopped, and left her hat over her eyes.
As @ Jomo said below, it made it more romantic then, that her behavior and her trust in him were rewarded in a kiss, leaving no doubt as to how he really felt about her. I SO LOVE that he hesitated, before kissing her. That whole scene was seriously my "Kyaa" moment.

What does 'Kyaa' mean?
I feel that it was the decisive turn around, confident stride, slow turning up of the cap and the pause all together in that scene that gets me.
I think it's my kyaa moment too. *Sigh*
Ivoire
January 4, 2015 at 10:11 PM
Hello GB~ You are still around :-) PART 1:
RE: "Kyaa!" I don't know if you know who Oprah Winfrey is, and maybe you do. She used to have a show called The Oprah Show, in the US. She would talk about having a "light bulb" moment, when she would make a big realization. It was like when the light comes on the light bulb, and you have that moment, that second when things click for you, and you finally get it. Her viewers would always know what she meant, when she would use that expression.
So, I didn't watch all of Secret Garden, just some episodes. In it, I remember HJW (the actress) at least once, being excited and going "Kyaa!" I took it to mean that moment when you are so happy, so excited, so elated, you can't hold it inside. So you go, "Kyaa!" I now always say that I am super, duper happy or elated, or excited about something. Saying "Kyaa!" always brings me back to that moment when I saw HJW say that (aka her character), and how excited she looked (I really liked the way she said it then, and the pitch of her voice went up, when she said it).
So, "light bulb moment"and "Kyaa" are not related per se, except that for me, whenever I hear those expressions, I always KNOW what they mean for me, and how they feel for me, and when that moment happened, and why. I might not be able to explain them well, but I do know what I mean, and the feeling that comes over me, that leads me to say those expressions.
So that kiss scene, what happened before then (the rescue and how tense that was), Healer's narration (from the beginning of the ep.), which actually showed how much he had changed emotionally since ep.1, the fact that he hesitated for a few secs, as if he was wondering if it was OK for him to kiss her, if he had her permission, and then (maybe), him remembering how down she was, and how embarrassed she was (to the point of wanting to die, as she said), and him longing to touch her, kiss her (we saw him look at her lips in ep.7), be emotionally close to her, and reassure her that he does indeed truly care about her, he is falling for her, and he "sees her as a woman," (and he wants her to know that) was my "Kyaa" moment. As I said earlier, it was not just the kiss itself for me, it was how it was done, how it happened, and what it meant, for both. The journey that led them to that kiss (which started in ep.1).
I have tried to imagine what must have been going on in his head. The fact that he walked with assurance and confidence when he was leaving her, and the same confidence when he came back, AND the fact that once he was in front of her, he would become different, tender, reduced to someone who actually hesitates (he doesn't do that with his work), is not totally sure of what he is about to do, in front of the woman he is falling in love with, THAT just did me in. It could have been the 1st kiss for him, and for her.
Ivoire
January 4, 2015 at 10:25 PM
@ GB, PART 2:
I had asked in another recap if beanies thought he had dated before, considering that he loved staying away from people, and I don't think he would taken a woman to his place (dangerous for him, and his place is not very tidy and clean). He seemed to be very work oriented, and into sports (and he has to keep those martial arts skills sharp, so he must train a lot, for his parkours, etc...)
So following this logic, this could (also) be the 1st kiss for both, in this dramaverse (drama-universe), and remember that they are fated to be together? They knew each other and seemed to have liked each other (as playmates), when they were younger. Fate is (as we know), a strong Kdrama theme. And if it is Healer's 1st kiss, it would make sense (also) that he hesitated, before deciding to do it. I am being long-winded again, however do you now see why I call it my "Kyaa moment?" I could write a whole chapter about that scene :-) I hope my explanations helped.
I would also like to add that some beanies have made some comments or asked some questions, saying that those things were small details, that they probably did not matter. I don't see it that way. If we (the viewers) notice them, and think about them to the point that we are now (here) discussing them, means to me that they DO matter, as they are an integral part of the drama. If we can see it, and hear it, then it matters. Otherwise, it is acting as if the audience does not care or is not paying attention, that some in the audience do not want to be engaged with the drama. In theater, and in plays, they pay attention to everything, b/c my friends who do plays told me that they never know what we (the audience) will catch (with our eyes, and ears). So, if it is important on the stage, why shouldn't it be important on film?
That was why I LOVED the conversation you guys had about the rescue scene and its execution. I LOLed (thank you for that), but I also agree with some of what you guys said, and your discussion actually made think a lot, realizing that there were things I had not thought about.
So, RE: the kiss scene and its execution, I don't know if it was the result of SJN (the writer), and of the PD, and of JCW and of PMY, or the result of SJN and the PD's decisions (only) to have things done that way, but it worked, didn't it? We are still talking about it, and spazzing about it :-) So yeah, for me at least, details matter. I also see those nuances and details in the acting of everyone involved. I am rewatching ep.8 right now, and realizing that PMY is really nailing her character. I didn't find her to be as strong in CH, the last drama I saw her in (from beginning to end).

Yes I'm still around!!! It's been a slow nothing to do work day so I might as well read and comment as sleep ..... *grunt*
Thanks so much for explaining 'Kyaa" and the rationale behind why that was a kyaa moment. Yes I know about Oprah but I only watched a couple of her shows.
First kiss? Yes very likely.
On the 4th page of this thread, 156.2.1 (Growingbeautifully January 4th, 2015 at 11:46 PM) I was thinking about the fact that as you mentioned before, Jung Hoo is lonely and isolated... so the first kiss thing is extremely probable.
The little details - we are such meticulous people LOL, you more than me, actually. I tend to run through the show so fast to catch the story I don't pause for the details. That's why I have to re-watch so much (really, that's the reason, it's not because I'm totally addicted or anything like that!!! :) )
There are details that are important as a hint or clue or foreshadowing of what may come. It is hard for us to know which details are meant as hints and which aren't. So,... it is natural that we will dissect all details that catch our attention LOL!
The 'trouble' taken to do this can be rewarding it is true. Which explorer will not want to make a first discovery in their treks? So we trek through our dramas, exploring nooks and crannies in the hope of making our discoveries too ... best of all if we can be the first to make that discovery, of course :) and get to share it with everyone.
I hope your computer does not give up or rather that you do not give up on it... hang in there and I'll catch you later! :)

If I were her, I would have kept my eyes tight shut.
I woudn't want to see him, it would be too much too soon.
Since she has decided to trust him implicitly, she has to go along to his desire to hide his face from her.
It is even more romantic, then, that she is rewarded by this trust with a soft kiss. *sigh*

I almost fainted watching the last scene, and then just repeated the scene, then realize that I have to wait for the whole week for the next episode :(. Fan girl mode is so on :D
By the way, I have been wondering this since the last episode. If Jung-hoo takes after his dad to the point that Myung-hee recognizes his dad/him immediately with one look, how can Moon-ho not recognize/realize him or at least think that Jung-hoo/Bong-soo looks so similar to that someone?

@ Smile134
The difference between Myung Hee and Moon Ho recognizing Joon Seok or not is probably because for her, JS was her long time friend of adulthood whereas for Moon Ho, he was one of the ahjusshis whom he may not have spent much time with.
Myung Hee remembers JS as a young man (as he was at the time he died) but Moon Ho might have considered him as someone of his parents' generation and not associate him with the young and simpleton-like Bong Soo.

Oh, I think I know why.
The answer may be in that 1st screen cap, w Joon Seok wearing Healer gear. With a hood, a cap, and glasses on, Joon Seok and Jung Ho look very much alike.
But what Moon Ho sees is a nerdy Boon Soo being clumsy and thick, which bears no resemblance to his brother's friend in the prime of his intellectual life.
You think?

December 31, 2014 at 9:09 AM
Ooh good point! and I remember Moon-ho also has a copy of the five-friends-pic so if he glanced at it once in a while, something in his brain might catch the similarities.....but I think....
---if you think about how Moon-ho has been motivated, he was always 'in love' with Myung-hee as a kind of mother/big sister figure who took care of him. So his attention has always been on the desire for her & baby Ji-an(non sexual) and perhaps guilt, and not focused on his brother's group of friends. ...?
But these characters are all so smart - to correctly infer the right conclusions from what they find out...but maybe this is a plot point that will be relevant later on....

I watched the whole ep and then sat in silence for a while, w a blank mind. Ji Chang Wook as the Healer has taken my breath away and blown my mind!
I decided it'd be better if I go do other things n make myself useful. A good few hours later, I still have no idea how to Squee over this Squeefes.
I know ppl are over the moon about that kiss, but I'm fangirling over that repelling he did down the elevator shaft. That was fancy stunt work and blood pumping stuff! Now if action stars look like him, I'd be watching action flicks and drooling all day long.
Park Min Young's acting sure has improved a great deal, and this char YS is loveable in itself. While she is blabbering away in front of the camera about her two crushes evaporating into thin air overnight, and doing a credible, competent job at it, all I can do is stare at BS's face and feel his pain, of being misunderstood and not being able to explain himself. Why is Ji Chang Wook sooooo expressive, so capable of communicating inner turmoil w/o saying a word? Or is it that Inner Turmoil is in the eye of the beholder?
It occurs to me that it must be hard being a young actress in K-ent. Some female fans are mad or jealous of u for kissing their oppa, if not that, at least the predominantly female audience is just going gaga over oppa w/o paying equal attn to u. Well, there is an upside: the likes of PMY and PSH get to kiss the likes of Lee Min Ho, LJS, JCW, etc.
I’m sure MS has sthg to do with the tragedy that has befallen the lot of his friends, but he may not be the sole cause, given the Old Bartender’s looming presence.
Who killed the other friend and pinned it on Seo Jung Ho's father? The same person then killed him or had him killed and made it look like a suicide. Why was that other friend killed in the first place? Did he, as a journalist, stumble upon a secret that (the Elder didn't want) couldn't be revealed?
MS’s one-sided obsession for MH must have been one motivation for his actions, but I hope it is not the only one, or else this story would be too simple, too pathetic.
As the writer has a resume of scripts w political backgd, I’m confident there is more to the story than meets the eye so far.
Next Monday is a long time away! And this thread will go inactive in a D or 2. Where to go to commiserate over the painful wait?

Why was that other friend killed in the first place? Did he, as a journalist, stumble upon a secret that (the Elder didn’t want) couldn’t be revealed?"
My take on it is he and the Elder had common goals.
In the flashback last week, MS said he had no interest in pursuing a career in journalism. And he wasn't passionate about changing the political landscape, like the others were. His primary concern was to stay close to MH and he wondered whether he would be attractive to her if he ran his family's junkyard, as he'd planned.
The Teacher commented about leaving prison to find two friends had died and the lone survivor having had a meteoric rise to wealth and power. (Odd trajectory for a timid and bitter sidekick guy.)
Fast forward: We see the Elder is a political fixer. MS was groomed to be his 'Heeler.'
They've fleshed out MS with nuance. My guess is that he betrayed his friends to the Elder in order to elevate himself, not knowing how hardball the Elder would play.
However, I suspect he now sees himself as a noble figure. He rationalizes that the position he was rewarded with gives him the means to nobly protect and provide for MH. And it also enables him to keep greedy bug-like politicians in check (thereby - in his mind - nobly fulfilling his friends' dreams of political reform). I think in his mind, he's a really good man who's been forced by circumstances to do some really bad things. But they're ok, since everything he does is for the greater good of others. This is noble idiocy at its finest.
To preserve his delusion, he turns a blind eye to the reality that the greediest egg-guarding bug has always been none other than himself. MH now lives virtually imprisoned as a tragic princess in his castle. And politically, he's become very thing his friends were fighting against.

One thing I thought was interesting in this episode was the scene when MH was sitting next to the open window in her room. When MS closed the window my thought was 'how suffocating and annoying that would be.' Then she dodged his questions. I thought 'innnnteresting. She has a look of a woman who's questioning things'. Then when he left MH defiantly threw the window back open. Yea!
I'll be so happy if this is saying (metaphorically) that she's ready to expand her horizons and start 'breathing' again. I cant tell if her problem is more Stockholm Syndrome or Stepford Wife. But she needs to get her old resilient inquisitive and feisty personality back!

My take on that scene: -
1. Myung-hee's not totally subservient to her husband. She hid the fact that she totally saw JH's face, his glasses turned dark only after she has had a good look at his face;
2. She has her own mind, even if she doesn't show it - throwing open the window as soon as MS leaves the room. She'll do as she damn well please.
Another thing - Myung-hee was quiet pleased when she bumped into "Joon Seok", not the reaction you'd expect from someone who met her husband's supposed killer. Highly unlikely that she doesn't know the supposed story behind her first husband's death, as Teacher Healer had said that JH need only read reports of the time to know how JH's dad committed suicide after killing his friend over money. So, what gives? Myung-hee doesn't believe the story?

December 31, 2014 at 9:25 AM
Maybe, due to trauma she never saw the story - she was hospitalized in the aftermath of the thing (the violent thing - accident? trauma?) and probably avoided revisiting old news/broadcasts when she was better.
So to her, she's just like "oh college friend, good times (before the horrible thing)!" while the media put out that story to frame/blame it on the dad. It's a M.O. we've seen yet again - when the Healer was framed for the murder of that first client guy.

December 31, 2014 at 9:21 AM
Your background setup of Moon-shik is brilliant. He had rationalized it as 'for the greater good' (for whom?) and hadn't accept the guilt or what friendship means (like take care of friend's wife, whom he loved anyways, vs. taking care of friend's family - including the traumatized 5 year old!?!!). I can follow it the direction where the characterization is going, but as I was watching, I kind of didn't want Moon-shik to be 'relatable' or pitiable... but it fits in with his more quieter younger self; he himself wasn't greatly ambitious for power, he just wanted one thing - the girl to be by his side.... oh well....
And for Myung-hee too. It's like she's his doll - to keep a pretty house with elegant hobbies....they ask about each others' day, but other than that and calling each other 'dear/dang-shin'.... what is he to her other than a good caretaker? Is he satisfied with keeping her mildly entertained, physically comfortable and memorializing her daughter??

The only thing I’ve seen in the flashback scenes is that – in his world – all roads did lead to MH. To me that’s not strange since he was a very young man when he made those pivotal choices. And it was in context; they haven’t shown him to be a person who was entirely healthy from a psychological standpoint.
I thought they’ve told us he was a bitter, loner, jealous sidekick guy, who was oddly fitted into a well-adjusted group of friends. The friends kept trying to draw him in, but he held them at arm’s length. The only connection he wanted was with the object of his obsessive one-sided love.
From the standpoint of family support, his parents seem to be missing. He was responsible for raising his very young brother. And the scene where we learned that he told is brother never to cry, suggests that his way of coping with pain was to internalize it.
What I’d be interested in seeing is how he got THAT way. What was the source of the pain that made him so angry, insecure and detached? How did he come to feel so victimized that he thought (personal) justice would be served by betraying his friends? There must be a backstory.
From a writing standpoint, I like the way this setup would juxtapose JH, MS and YS. They all had tragic backgrounds. MS shows what happens when you let your tragic background consume your life in distrust. Living life in an insecure isolated way, and cynically protecting yourself from the 1 in 50 who will hurt you. YS shows the results of overcoming your tragic background and having the courage to love and trust again. Living life confidently, and open to the 49 in 50 who will treat you well. JH stands at the crossroads of those choices.

I'm going to have to go buy myself a medal tomorrow... actually coming back to follow up. LOL. Sorry I'm so bad about this.
I can relate to your computer problems. I started out using a Mac back in the dark ages and had to switch to a 'PC' for business. Wanted to roof test the darn thing every time I used it. I've been back to using Macs for a while and thought I'd buy another 'PC' so I can run some business programs not made for a Mac. The thing is lucky it's still alive. Absolutely can't stand using it. Moral of the story: buy a Mac and you'll never go back. :-)
Things have been going great. Really busy lately, so haven't had much time to post. Well, that and the fact that there hasn't been a drama that's really caught my interest until Healer. I'm in a funny phase. Ever since YFAS I've started to go down a decidedly geeked-out path. I'm falling far more in love with a drama's for it's structure or an innovative artistic style than for the actual characters. It's pretty darn wonkish. *I think my brain is telling me I need to start working again...*
Thanks for your patience in taking the time to read through my cathartic posts. Good to see you're back and have a drama you love! I'll catch up on the next thread. :-)

I'm guessing that the Elder found a young, frustrated Moon-shik and asked him what he desired most in the world. He answered Myung-hee (possibly in a hopeless, "it'll never happen old man" way), a deal of some sort was made for Moon-shik to act as the Elder's person in exchange for the Elder fulfilling his dream, and then the accident happened.
I think the Elder created a circumstance where Moon-shik's shortsighted wish was granted in the worst possible way, so even though Moon-shik never meant anyone to get hurt, the Elder points out this a case of ends justifying means. Moon-shik can never get out from under the Elder's thumb without admitting he played a large part in the deaths that led to his marriage, and the Elder gets an indebted lapdog. Interesting that the last time Moon-shik gave any cause to worry was when Original Healer was out of jail ten years ago, eh?
Hard to imagine anyone abandoning a child who knew and trusted them, but if he's just coming to the realization that his actions caused his entire friend group to be destroyed, then maybe it was pointed out to him that Jian was the absolute last thing holding him back. And he didn't kill her, he abandoned her - after killing her father and uncle and paralyzing her mother, maybe abandonment felt benign?

Good conjecture. I'd almost agree with you if it were not for the very dark expressions that the young MS had around MH. They communicated more than sadness. I could see shadows of malice on that face, esp. when:
1. he had that talk w MH about inheriting the junk yard not being good enough for him;
2. he was with the happy couple in the hosp for Jian's birth.
Could it be that the actor overacted and gave off more than was intended? Or did I read more on his face than was there?
Another pt:
MS is perfectly comfortable w killing the man who was the messenger for that tape (in ep 1), and pinning it on an innocent Healer. That suggests to me he is not an innocuous sort.
Did he sell his soul to the devil w/out knowing what would ensue? Possible.
Would he have sold his soul even IF he knew what would happen to his friends? Also possible. Call me cynical, I believe it's the latter. It'd make the show darker.

Yeah, I'd agree that even if MS was innocent of any ill-wishing at the start (not likely, given the flashbacks) he very, very quickly started rationalizing away moral discomfort. But I don't think he was trapped by the Elder being sneaky - I think his own intentions were clear enough (get rid of Myung-hee's husband) on their own. The Elder probably just leveraged it, and it's possible MH interrupted something resulting in escalation and more death.
I don't think MH directly witnessed MS tracking down Jian, since the pivot for MH's recent actions seem to be finding out that Jian's grave is empty. But if his dream is any indication, he came back to find Jian's apartment trashed, which may mean he got suspicious of something and ran back and nearly interrupted something in the works. Though even then, everyone keeps talking about an "accident" when Jian's memory is closer to a home invasion, which isn't what I'd term an accident. So I'm curious as to what's gone on there.
It's also pretty telling that Myung-hee reacts to spotting what she thinks is Jung Hoo's dad in a way that looked like delighted surprise, which is pretty damn unusual if the backstory is that Jung Hoo's dad killed himself after being suspected killing Jian's dad. She clearly adored her husband at the time, so wouldn't the sudden appearance of your husband's killer prompt a horrified reaction? Basically, no one's reactions are what I'd expect given the "accident" and murder/suicide histories.

@ Miranda
I'm super curious.
I thought the home invasion scene was one of those times Ji An was abused as a child by her then foster father or something. Did Moon Ho come rushing in? I did not catch that.
And the accident, I thought was a different thing that happened way before that. What we need to know is, besides Myung Hee, was Ji An in that accident? (I think she was and for some reason was taken away or ran away and hid) But why did Ji An go missing then?
Yes good point about Myung Hee looking glad to see who she thinks is Joon Seok. Not likely she'd greet her husband's killer that way. So something does not add up. What has Myung Hee been told happened to Joon Seok and can she just accept everything as gospel truth? I want her to find our sooner rather than later!!!
Maybe Moon Shik will have another bout of madness at home and she gets to see or hear stuff that will get her to question more. She is already starting to thhink again about the past and wonder about that 'burglar'. I hope she continues.

I think I'm conflating MH's dream (when he rushes in and sees a ransacked house) and the child abuse pipe dream. I can't remember if they used the same little girl in both scenes?
I'd guess you're right about Ji An being in the accident and running (or hyperventilating and going into shock and being overlooked). It's possible that Ji An saw something that would've tipped off police to MS as the orchestrator, and that's why MS leaves her behind - because even though she's mute and doesn't understand what she saw, if a police officer heard her say it he'd connect some dots.
ywcnois
December 31, 2014 at 5:10 AM
Well it's possible that Myung Hee didn't know that Joon Seok "killed her husband."
I'm really starting to wonder what kind of accident it was and who was/were involved. I don't think you can count killing as an accident, unless it was accidental murder. So if that's not the case, Gil Han wasn't involved in the "accident". Then what? Did he die before the accident or after? And who were involved in the accident? Myung Hee and Ji An?
And I wonder what the secret radio broadcast thing had to do with all of this. I guess the teacher ended up in jail because of this, so did the others stop as a result to that? And then they were never discovered? Or were they?
Besides that I wonder how much Moon Ho knows about Healer to trust him enough to ask him to protect Young Shin.
Thanks for the recap!

From how it's been referenced, I figured Joon Seok was a known suspect at least - but honestly, Myung Hee has been pretty isolated by Moon Shik ever since, so it's conceivable that he would tell her Joon Seok has died without elaborating. It looks like she had some sort of mental breakdown when she heard Ji An was dead, it's possible she's being willfully ignorant like Original Healer and Ahjumma.
As for protecting Young Shin, I'm not sure Moon Ho knows much more than advertised - doesn't kill people, is efficient, no connections. His other option in town appears to be Doble (ha) S Guard or gangsters (who are already on Lawyer Dad's side).
The secret broadcasts might have tripped Elder's radar. Maybe they broadcast something he didn't like, and he rained hell down on them and found a convenient malleable Moon Shik in their midst?

God, love this show! I've watched most of it raw first and then read the recaps here to get the details, and I think it's a credit to the show that I really do need the recap to fully understand everything. A lot of shows I can watch raw and get almost everything that's going on just with my limited Korean vocabulary. And, admittedly I understood the broad strokes of everything in this episode, but there's a whole other layer of emotion and subtext going on that I completely missed without subs.
Great moments in this ep:
1. The madness scene. I loved when Young-shin's dad kept throwing that word "friend" at Moon-shik, "Chingu, chingu, chingu!" Like a bullet. It just perfectly implies all the trust and betrayal and outrage. Also, the more we see of Noona, Moon-shik, and even somewhat Moon-ho, the more I realize how twisted and psychologically unhealthy they all are. This family is CraaaaayZee.
2. The elevator scene. Talk about tense! I allllmost thought Young-shin would actually die, before I remembered that of course she can't, at least not yet. (Woops! Unjinx, unjinx! *sign of the cross*).
3. THAT KISS. Thankfully I wasn't spoiled for it and for a second when Jung-hoo hesitated I thought he would show Young-shin his face, which would be a major game changer. But then, it was EVEN BETTER! Sigh~~ It was just a perfect way to end this episode and the perfect way for Jung-hoo to eliminate all the doubts and embarrassment Young-shin was feeling, and he was suffering through too, all episode. I agree with JB, there's so many things attracting Jung-hoo to her on so many levels and they are just unbelievably lovely together. I can't wait for things to heat up and for their connection to be tested- God knows there's A LOT of stuff that will test it in the near future! *biting my fingernails*

Yep! MS's calm, loving, caring exterior in front of his wife and brother is covering up a rotten, dangerous, volcanic core underneath. Talk about a Double life!
The actress playing MH is not only elegant and beautiful, she is a wonderful actress too. So far, she doesn't have much to do but sit there and look placid. But I hope n think she'll have more to act on. Will she find out about Jian being still alive soon? Or what made her believe Jian was dead? That placidity will get blown out of the water, won't it? And it'll be directed at MS for sure. She'll bring him down, I believe, when she finds out the part he played in separating her from Jian, and in destroying her friends' lives, even if he was a pawn in the Elder's bigger game. That destruction to their little circle couldn't have happened w/o him, could it?

Oh, I think it's very clear that MH has in no way moved past the tragedy from 20 years ago and that it is eating her up inside. We've seen what happens when her carefully constructed calm surface is rippled- complete breakdown. I agree the actress is very good, she keeps tension in the character even when she's not doing much, making me wonder if/when she'll shatter. Now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder if she has any subconscious or repressed suspicions about her husband? That would help explain why she is so emotionally messed up and has never been able to heal.

What happened to her 22 years ago must have been very traumatic: She lost her husband, she got maimed, and (far as she knows), her daughter died! I don't know how one can heal from sthg that tragic.
On top of that she feels guilty that she has lived while her daughter died. It's like she was a bad mother (in her guilt complex). And we don't even know what happened to take her husband's life.
It was 22 years ago, becos that was how long the Sec (Sec Oh?) has been with Moon Shik; that was when he was sent by the Elder to serve n spy on MShik for him!

hehehe... the actress has to play elegant and beautiful most of the time. Minus that part where her grief enrages her to the point of convulsions.
I'm not mocking her at all! The part may look simple with a description of 'gentle and beautiful lady' but she's doing a great job and infusing the mannerly grown-up with the feisty younger self she was before.

To me she's always seemed eerily bland and complacent, when contrasted with her formerly firey self. I thought it's either that she's either been forcing herself not to think, is over-medicated (or maybe even manipulatively medicated?) or that there was some sort of brain injury from the accident. But the scene at the window suggests more is going on inside her head than we've been shown so far. Now we see that she's also maintaining a facade in front of her husband.

After this episode I am sure she somehow knows that there's more to their history than what her husband is wanting for her to understand. A brain injury is in place but she is starting to get a grasp of things. She is definitely suspicious of Moon-shik. After she saw Jung-hoo, she said to MS that she mistook him for Jung-suk because of her medication...obviously a lie.
In the end Moon-shik is going to have to step up and protect his family from the barman Elder, but how far will he go? Can't wait for the story to unravel.
Thank you all for the thorough analyses, makes the drama so much more thrilling!

Thanks so much JB! I've finally read the recap and things have fallen into place.
The thoughts that came to me...
Many, many of our characters need a healer or healing.
Teacher needs to get back there to see his friends and assuage his guilt for not doing anything about his suspicions.
Moon Ho too has guilt issues and has to decide what to do about his brother and his first love, Myung Hee.
Myung Hee needs to know the truth and have her daughter back.
Healer needs to develop more healthy relationships and be part of a family with his mum and Teacher and of course Young Shin and her family and even with Ahjumma.
Young Shin needs to overcome her traumas.
Moon Shik needs to break away from Elder and be truly remorseful or lose everything of value to him.
My favourite scene: Healer repelling into the lift and getting both himself and YS safe in that most awesome way. Need to watch it again... and continue on to that rooftop scene... you know, you know. :)

Ah right. For some reason my brain thought there was a big time jump between JH at the riverbank and him showing up at the office. But of course there isn't, because YS called him, got delayed a little while talking to JS, then went into the meeting with MH and the editor. That makes sense.
But you'd think meeting and talking to Teacher is important too, because he did abandon him for two years and suddenly showed up when JH discovered some old, intriguing connections. I guess to JH, YS will always be first. ;)

I think it's also rebelling too, but I do have to agree with Jackeline, meeting the teacher is also important too. Wouldn't he want to find out the truth? But then again, the teacher may not even answer his questions directly. I do also think he misses people too. Like when he realised the teacher wanted to meet him because it's his birthday, he had a smile on his face. I fears abandonment so no wonder he would prefer to be alone. Being alone and living by yourself would mean you won't have to worry about people abandoning you. But deep down inside he wants people to love him..

Now I remember at first thinking that place is the Healer's hideout/home. It kind of looks like it, as I remember it from the scene where the delivery boy dropped off JH's food and he came to pick it up, going through a passage way and secret door. Where Teacher was looked like the outside part, where it still appears as an abandoned factory building to other people's eyes. It would make sense, since Teacher told JH to meet him at home.

Hey, if my Teacher, person who raised me, just upped and left me, w no word, then called at an inconvenient time to say meet me in 5 mins, while on the other hand, the only girl I've ever been interested in called, which one to choose to meet would be a no-brainer. If I recall, it was like this?: The phone call with Min-ja-sshi - if the Teacher wants him to go to Australia/lay low/don't meet Moon-shik, then he needs to meet with the Healer by sunset. Otherwise, he'll take that as the answer and find out stuff on his own.
Teacher and Min-ja meets at sunset, dressed up all fine - she saying "the sky is beautiful, that means the sun will set soon" "if the sunsets soon, then Healer will be at that house about now" and they talk about fate, happiness, truth that may lead to unhappiness etc etc.
Healer goes to Moon-shik's house & that was the end of ep 7. He runs away and is chilling all good-looking and thoughtful at the riverbank, reminiscing about not wanting people's concerns, but not minding when Young-shin calls nagging him about getting enough sleep, eating breakfast, calling in, all that. Then he rushes into to work when she ends the phone call with the "east or west, let me tell Moon-ho how I got this info" yea....

Another really understated, small, yet memorable moment for me in this episode was when MJ called JH to let him know YS could be in danger and in the middle of the conversation JH asked "Who? Why?" in a shaky voice.
I watched the episode without subs and haven't watched it with subs yet so I don't know exactly what MJ said, but I know enough Korean to understand those two words. About that making personal contact thing and how comfortable our OTP are with skinship.
I am re-watching Ep 7 where she is hyperventilating in the office and Bong Soo gives her, her medicine. She holds on to his arm and he almost touches her face before she recovers. Interesting that holding on to him helps her recover so fast.
A throwback memory to the time they slept holding hands - being comfortable in a special way with that one person.
I love the way she is so herself as to make those camera test poses in front of Bong Soo, and how his poking her forehead did not faze her at all. As a sunbae she could have taken issue with that.
I guess it started because she felt like a protective mentor/sunbae towards hapless Bong Soo from the beginning and started pulling him along by the arm at the get go. Now, it's just going to have to escalate!!! Yay!

At some point she's going to connect those dots - that she calms down while touching Bong Soo and she calms down while touching Healer. They're still in wildly different context right now, but at some point it's going to catch.
People smell the same, no matter what clothing they put on, and she's putting her nose right up against him - it's only a matter of time before her subconscious makes the link.

I know :-) Please check it away (though to be honest, I had forgotten that you check everything or almost everything that is mentioned to you :-) ) I think I am right though, in what I saw. Please, let me know what your findings show :-)
