Blushes and belly laughs in Heart to Heart

Here we go with the official poster and teasers for tvN’s quirky romantic comedy Heart to Heart, which stars a heroine who suffers from uncontrollable blushing, and a hero who apparently suffers from uncontrollable ego. A match made in heaven, somehow?

This drama marks the anticipated reteaming of the writer and director pair who brought us Coffee Prince back in 2007, and tvN seems like the ideal station for their breezy, romantic style. However, we know by now that past credits in no way guarantee future success (and PD Lee Yoon-jung did disappoint with Triple), so I’m still hesitant to get excited about Heart to Heart yet—although the teasers do look cute, what little we can glean from them.

Choi Kang-hee plays the heroine who explains in the teaser that she can hardly date with her condition—not that blushing makes her undateable, but the fact that she’s so shy she can’t even say the word “dating” without stuttering and blushing furiously. Since we love opposites in dramaland, Chun Jung-myung is the psychiatrist “who needs attention to live” (ha), which seems like a weird but funny mix.

I’m less fond of the whole setup where she seeks treatment and he’s the therapist, even if they end up healing each other (because he’s suffering a trauma of his own). I just… can we have therapists in dramaland who don’t date their patients, please? Why should that be a difficult request to meet?

The pairing of these two actors is one I have to see in action before I can draw conclusions about it, though I have to say it’s nice to see Chun Jung-myung back in rom-coms. Choi Kang-hee has done a fair amount of comedy so I know more what to expect of her, but it’s been such a long time since I’ve seen Chun smiling so broadly, and it’s such a relief. (And he has such an adorable smile, not that we’ve gotten to see it much in the roles he’s taken in recent years, which have been either thrillers or melos or sageuks.)

Heart to Heart will launch on January 9 as tvN’s next Friday-Saturday drama.

I swear... dating your psychiatrist is such a turn-off for me for dramas.

Same! It's such an ethical no-no it makes me cringe that this is becoming a thing. It's really not romantic - it crosses too many boundaries.

What an unnecessary comment. 37 is old? You must think the male lead is old too because he's only 3 years younger than her.

Well, some 37s are old looking and I agree somewhat that this female lead is too but she is NOT UGLY but certainly not a stunner either. haha...I guess pairing up w/30+ are still consider OK b/c when I see the posters w/her and JO WOO was it? The bridal mask guy, MAN that was certainly a crazy miscast because next to him she really looks like a older sister or aunt. No offense but Korean is really trending w/paring up w/older females and younger men huh? I mean, sometimes it still works if the guy looks older than their age but some do look really much older the women. In this case, pics look OK compares to bridal mask guy.

@ Kiki there is absolutely nothing wrong with a woman looking older than her partner. Some of these scenarios have brought us the best love stories e.g My name is Kim Sam Soon ( Kim Suna & Hyun Bin) , What's Up Fox (Chun Jung-myung & Go Hyun-jung) , Secret Love Affair ( Yoo Ah-in & Kim Hee-ae) , Big Bang's Top photo shoot with Lee Mi-sook etc....... All these women looked much older than their partners (some even less attractive) but at the same time they gave us the best love stories. So many things go into making a drama right :- the chemistry, the writing, great acting etc...........

Wow, that is so mean. and your day to be "old" will come too. (37 is nothing, a baby)

Being stuck with a noisy extrovert... As a shy person myself, i'd say a match made in hell, lol. Apparently the female lead is supposed to have a crush on another guy so maybe the leads won't end up together but only become friends & confidents? I would like that.

Can we have therapists in dramaland who don’t date their patients, please?
For the sake of "entertainment", scripts do not go by the book. The same can be said of legal or medical dramas, such as Prosecutor Princess or Dr Stranger, which has infuriated many viewers working in such fields. I guess that the whole concept of deontology is not popular.
I wish to add that I would also very much like to be spared the sight of therapists in need of healing/therapy, blabbering about their patients' confession to colleagues or other patients. Even though dramas are fictional, they leave an impression on minds, molding them into believing that the people with such positions are not to be trusted.

I agree that this doesn't help the field of psychotherapy win many fans in Korea. Everyone has doctors, so we know from experience that all doctors aren't inept and unethical. Sadly, most of us also have had lawyers - and probably had a good experience. But not many people have had psychiatrists in real life (esp in Asia), so there is no frame of reference. Like, I don't know any chaebols but based on those I see in Kdrama I have to assume they all are rude and obnoxious :)
Ethically it's completely unacceptable for a shrink to date a patient.

Interesting how they are premiering 2 weeks after Misaeng has already ended. In a way props to TvN for not rushing the product just to sustain the lead in of sorts.

As for the drama, after watching SLA, High School King of Savvy and now Valid Love I think I've finally reached my limit on questionable relationships. (Though I love all those show so call me a sucker two months from now)

Looks like Ahn So Hee is in for the second female lead. Good for her! Nice to see her land a significant role with some good company on her first outing since leaving WG. She was pretty good in 'I like it hot' but has been out of the loop for a while. So, I'm looking forward to seeing her step up to the plate here. Good luck!

The teasers are funny.. Choi Kang Hee looks so cute here! CJM is also still have the babyface :)

The main problem: psychiatrist and patient
Where in dramaland I don't meet psychiatrist who date his/her patient?
Even if maybe that's possible in real life, the moral ethics and the professionalism would be questioned. I can't even support IOIL OTP even though it's JIS and GHJ.

Yes the OTP's relationship in IOIL is disconcerting but technically though they are not in a doctor/patient relationship. She's a psychiatrist. And he happened to be suffering from a disorder. While he was confined and receiving treatments, he had another doctor. So no, he was not dating his doctor but he was dating a doctor.

It looks really cute! I'm as shy person who does better around extroverts- they tend to do all the talking-- so I kind of get it. But is there any chance he's just A psychiatrist instead of HER psychiatrist? I am also not keen on the psychiatrist dating their patient thing

If Chun Jung-Myung's in, I'm in. So excited. :D

I don't think I've ever seen him as the conceited, loud type of hero, so I'm really looking forward to it. And some of my favorite recent dramas have been from tvN. It doesn't hurt that the second lead male is super hot, despite his hair.

Oh, 2015 drama gods, PLEASE be good to Megan in the new year! She's been doing so well on her diet, staying away from chocolate and white food and junk food! Allow her to satisfy her sweet tooth with extra sweet and delicious (but gloriously calorie-free) K-dramas, especially ones starring her favorite Korean actor. Amen.

I'm just waiting for a new trend to come along because this doctor-patient romantic relationship is getting tiring. I get it that people have no new ideas popping up in their heads, but can they please use more morally correct ones if they're recycling anyway? There has to be a breaking point somewhere like there was for time travelling. I just wonder how long we have to wait for that to come.

My question was and is, why and how come there is any trend ie taking place at about the same time?

If that basis for a story proved successful, then I'd expect that when 1 drama was about to end or ended, the next with a similar trend would pick it up and cash in on it, but they all happen at the same time!!! How would they know if that trend was great with viewers before starting a similar one?

Do producers from different networks get together and say, let's all do ex-spouses get-together stories for Summer and Time Travel stories in Winter??? LOL?

I'm pretty sure one drama starts it off. For this trend, it's the success of IOIL, for time traveling, it's something in 2012 that I don't even remember. Most likely QIHM. The point is, whenever a slightly 'unique' concept comes out as a drama's synopsis, before it even airs, other writers are jumping all over it with a twist of their own.

Its the lack of ideas, really. Which is fine but then immoral relationships start trending and then it's not fine. Every drama coming out next year either has a psycho lead with different personalities or a doctor lead who romances their patient. In worse cases, both. Like, can we get a move on dramaland? I'd love some sweet romances without any sort of patern!

Thanks Mandy, I guess that is what happens.

I am amazed though at the speed at which they pick it up. Was there time to know that the show/trend was going to be a success before going the same way?

Master's Sun aired on 7 Aug just a week after Who Are You 2013 which started on 29 July 2013, which means that the different writers had decided to pen stories about women who see ghosts which leads them to delve into some mystery or crime a few weeks before the airing of both shows. Some coincidence!!

Another eg. Rooftop Prince started on 21 March 2012 and Queen In Huyn's Man started on 18 April 2012, about a month apart.

Emergency Couple began on 24 January 2014 and Cunning Single Lady/Sly and Single Again aired on 27 February 2014, again a month apart.

Never failed to amaze me, how quickly they write to jump on the same/similar bandwagon.

Fake blushing making our heroine's life difficult?

Sounds a lot like Crush & Blush to me, and Gong Hyo-jin OWNED that movie, ugly red-cheeks makeup, hideous styling and all.

That was my initial reaction as well. Seems more like a Gong Hyo Jin drama/movie mashup copy.....blushing AND a psychiatrist. If they throw in a pasta restaurant, a has-been idol, a teacher, a ghost.....or Seo Woo.... I'm done.......
