Baby’s first award

girlfriday: Look, we got a shiny trophy!

javabeans: Dramabeans was chosen to receive a Dari Award this year, given out by the Korea Creative Content Agency (part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism), for their 10 Year Commemorative Dari Award. We were surprised and super honored to be the recipient, and happy to share the news with you.

girlfriday: “Dari” means “bridge,” and the award honors businesses that spread Korean culture, promote creative content in the US, and bridge the culture gap.

javabeans: It’s really cool, because we feel like our work is just us doing what we like to do, and now people are giving us awards for doing it, and that sort of feels like we hit the jackpot.

girlfriday: We attended the ceremony last night and got to meet a lot of really cool people who work in the industry on the creative side of things. Mostly we thanked our mothers for raising us to be drama addicts, and we thanked all of you guys, our readers, for being such an awesome community.

javabeans: You couldn’t hear us say it, but we were super complimentary about you and said really nice things, I swear!

girlfriday: You would have cried if you heard our acceptance speech.

javabeans: Which explains why I’m in LA right now, and also why maybe somebody is slacking on her Pinocchio recaps…

girlfriday: I AM NOT slacking! *hiccup*

javabeans: But we’ll be back at work soon, once we stop staring at the shiny trophy.

girlfriday: And drinking our celebratory wine.

javabeans: That might take a while. Will it happen sooner if we drink faster?

girlfriday: I dunno, let’s try.

javabeans: Is there an award for that too? ‘Cause I think we could win that one.

girlfriday: Not yet, but until someone invents that award and gives it to us, we’ll just have to keep pushing Korean dramas down everyone’s throats.

javabeans: Back to work, missy! Recaps don’t write themselves.

girlfriday: DON’T I KNOW IT.

Congratulations! That was a nice gesture. The invaluable work you've done for years finally got recognized and that's truly something to be proud of and feel so good about. I couldn't say thanks enough for this great website, that since I got addicted to korean dramas in 2012 (oh, I sure tried to stay away for years knowing this would be me now, but I got bored one night and watched Coffee Prince so I could fall asleep. Sure thing, I went to sleep coz my eyes are just about to fall out after 10 episodes of marathon viewing.) well, Dramabeans, was my go-to site for anything related to Korean dramas. For dramas that I don't have the time nor the patience to watch, I just read the recaps.
Anyway, I would send you guys a gift as a token of my appreciation coz words are cheap but I don't know what gift to give so I bought a digital copy of your book, hope that in my little way I could show my support. I would have love a physical book for my collection but I understand it is quite difficult to sell a printed copy.
There were a lot of kdramas this year that I understand you have to drop some shows but I still wish you could have recapped the popular ones.
Oh, but I am happy for you guys, you deserve a pat in the back and those wines. ;-)

Congrats! You guys deserve this award! I absolutely love this site! I've been loving korean dramas since 2009. I'm happy that I found this site to deconstruct korean dramas especially the parts/cultures that I don't understand. Love you guys! Keep up the good work! hwaiting! Lol

Well, congrats DB! I´d have loved to hear that acceptance speech as well. And of course your mums are great and us readers make DB a lively place, but we shouldn´t forget to mention all the other helpers that make DB as awesome as it is. I couldn´t imagine it anymore without the precious input from gummimochi, HeadsNo2, awcoconuts, odilettante, dramallama, Fanderay and LollyPip. You guys also deserve your fair share of the celebratory cake (and for jb and gf, the cake should also help with the hangover:-)). Cheers!

Thats awesome news and im glad for all the people work hard to make DB this good.

Dramabeans is also important outside American marketplace for the people who create Korean culture like dramas, films because us International fans outside US go from DB to licensed streaming sites.

P.S Now i can stop wondering where the usual fast Pinnochio recap is. Great excuse being out there busy getting awards ;)

I have been following Dramabeans since 2005, and never failed to open it everyday.

To see how this site is growing is really an accomplishment of dramabeans' consistency and passion of enjoying korean drama.

Being in non-US country, Dramabeans is not only bridging Korean culture with the US, it has serves as the bridge of Korean culture to the WORLD!
Wish you more success in the future!

Congratulations! You girls deserve it for all your hardwork and dedication! Kdramas will definitely NOT be so interesting and fun if not for Dramabeans. I often read your recaps first, before deciding if I should watch a drama and enjoy your recaps and the discussion that follows it.

I also want to say a BIG thank you to Dramabeans for bringing together a group of like-minded Kdrama cum Lee Seunggi friends! The 'Singapore Hearties' which came about as a result of The King 2 hearts via DB recaps is still going strong - we have a chat group in whatsapp and meet occasionally. Some of them have become my good friends too!

Congratulations on the award! It must feel very rewarding to have put in so much work over the years, and have so many people, including professionals in the creative arts fields, in business, people in Korea and the KCCA notice the contributions this blog makes to spread Korean culture. I am absolutely NOT surprised, and in fact for some reason, this week, I was thinking about how DB really does a lot to help spread Korean culture.

Thank you for the many recaps written here, but also for taking the time to explain those cultural and language details that might be lost on many of us, and that have often left me puzzled. I still remember an experience I had, when I was watching 7LCS. As I read the recap for ep.8, I was very glad to see this sentence, written by JB, "He asks why she took so long to come to him. As in, why’d she deny her feelings for so long?"

That sentence was very important to me (at the time), because when I had watched the ep. (with English subs), and I had read that comment (subtitled) made by GR , my very first thought had been, "what do you mean, why did she take so long to come to you? She is right now walking by your side." I had taken what GR had said literally, and I didn't understand what he meant, since they were both walking side by side, when he said it. After reading that sentence (in the recap), and thinking about it for a few minutes, the sentence totally made sense (then) to me. It (then) made sense to me that in opening one heart's to someone, and in confessing one's love to someone, one IS "going to the other person," since the person doing the confessing is not as (emotionally) distant or as far away as s/he might have been before (confessing).

My mind was opened that day, and I thought how interesting it was that even though expressing oneself in that way totally made sense in a Korean context, it would sound very weird (and would not work) in French, for example (if said literally). And that to me is one of the many beauties of languages: one has to know about the culture (where that language is spoken), and its peoples. It makes me ponder, it sends me back to the different languages I speak, it makes me analyze my mother tongue, and question at times why we say what we say, and how we say it. In so doing, I find myself learning more about other cultures, and about my own.

I have used that example of "why did it take you so long to come to me?" to explain to people why I love Kdramas, and why I invest the time I do watching them, and thinking about them. "It's because besides exposing me to another world (and another language), and taking me out of my reality (at times), they make me think, and they make me question things. They allow me to have conversations and discussions I would not be having otherwise. I have enjoyed communicating and connecting with people I wouldn't have if not for Kdramas, and Korean TV programming. They have made me curious about acting, about what happens BTS, about the entertainment world, and what it takes to be in it. They have exposed me to a different way of singing, and to different musical genres. This is going to sound cliche [however I don't know another way to say it], Kdramas, and other Korean TV programs have opened my mind and my heart to a part of the world I knew little about."

Thank you for being the bridge to the Korean culture, and to Korea! Thank you for paying attention to those details some of us are interested in (and mentioning them in your recaps, and in your threads). As a beanie said earlier, many more awards will be following this one. I would be very interested as well, to see a written version of both of your speeches, mostly out of curiosity.

It was worth taking the time to write it, wasn't it? we never know how what we do (professionally or otherwise), or how what we say might impact or affect others...
