Bae Soo-bin, Sohn Eun-seo the latest potential additions to Twinkle Twinkle

Jang Shin-young, Bae Soo-bin, Sohn Eun-seo

Hm, SBS is going through a lot of shuffling for its upcoming weekend drama Twinkle Twinkle My Heart, which has already changed its title (from Goddess of Sales) and gained and lost some stars, most recently Kim Jung-eun and Kim Su-ro. Jang Shin-young (My Spring Days) has been floated as a possible replacement for Kim Jung-eun, and now Bae Soo-bin (Greatest Marriage, Secret) is up to replace Kim Su-ro, with Sohn Eun-seo (Her Legend, Love Rain) also in the mix to join.

Sohn Eun-seo would play the younger sister to Bae Soo-bin and falls into a love triangle with Oh Chang-seok and Lee Tae-im. The drama sounds like a lighthearted family show that centers around a success story involving two families connected by fried chicken. I know, that’s a weird way to describe a drama, but that’s what we’ve got. I can guess from the writer’s credits (Goddess of Marriage, Sons of Sol Pharmacy) that it’ll probably have a large cast and smallish stories, and if SBS continues to pursue its makjang-free policy, Twinkle Twinkle My Heart ought to be light on the angst. And while there are a lot of actors in the cast, it appears that the main lead will be played by Nam Bo-ra.

(The makjang-free stance hasn’t been netting very high ratings for SBS, with Birth of a Beauty, Modern Farmer, Feel-Good Day, Angel Eyes, and Endless Love all pulling in mostly single-digit ratings. Even so, I hope SBS doesn’t give up on the idea, because I’m enjoying the lighter, happier weekend offerings after spending a long stretch watching long makjang-fests whose primary function seemed to be raising one’s blood pressure.)

Interestingly, though, the producers seem to be so upset with Kim Jung-eun and Kim Su-ro for leaving the show that they have gone so far as to consider legal action against them. Castings fall through all the time so this feels like a pretty strong response; a rep from production house Samhwa Networks (which also produced Wonderful Season, What’s With This Family, Gu Family Book, and Thrice Married Woman) stated that the actors’ sudden departures and unilateral announcements to the public had a detrimental effect on the production.

The rep added that both actors (independently of each other) cited dissatisfaction with the the roles being too small and the other castings as their grounds for leaving the show. This particularly rankled, because the title change from Goddess of Sales allegedly came at Kim Jung-eun’s request, but producers drew the line at also changing the characters. Stating that they could not go so far as to change the writer’s narrative intent in altering the scope of the roles, “we could no longer find a point of negotiation.”

The rep also pointed a finger at the Kims for contributing to the negative rumors circling the show’s production environment… which okay, even if that were true, I’d think actively suing them for it just digs that hole deeper, no? In any case, the producers have enough solid family dramas on their credits that I’m sure they can find a way to make this work, but maybe that’ll be a more successful endeavor if they nix this whole lawsuit idea and just focus on making fried chicken funny.

Twinkle Twinkle My Heart is being planned for a January premiere, in the slot following Birth of a Beauty (which I totally love — let’s hope the fun spirit continues from one show to the next).

Bae Soo-bin, yes! I really want him to take this role! I would love to finally see him in a drama playing a character I can like and root for.

It may just be me, but Kim Jung-eun requesting a name change for the drama and then quitting because the producers wouldn't meet her other demands concerning her character, shows a lack of professionalism. The same could be said for Kim Su-ro, who I've liked since A Gentleman's Dignity, if it's true. They should have just done the drama without, y'know, the drama. But if Kim Su-ro leaving means Bae Soo-bin is in, then I'm a happy camper. I hope the lawsuit is dropped though. It's just adding bad press.

What sorry wait how is birth of a beauty not makjang-ish? Though I am completely enjoying it because it does dwell too much on the angst I think it does have some makjang elements to it no?

I was thinking the same thing! Definitely less angst and blood-boiling that traditional makjangs, but I remember thinking during ep 4, "Did that just happen? This show has gone to crazy town! I didn't realize it was a makjang!" But once I accepted the crazy, it's been mostly enjoyable. It's all about perspective. ?

Birth of a Beauty has so much delicious humor and warmth to balance out the angst.

Having hateful characters or dramatic setups doesn't automatically make something makjang. It's often a tonal quality, a soapiness or hysteria or exaggerated emotional affect. Birth of a Beauty has some elements of makjang, but I wouldn't put it in the same class of shows like King's Family or Hundred Year Inheritance or Wife's Temptation. I find Beauty really light and zippy, which isn't tonally what you'd see in makjangs, whose bread and butter are angst and melodrama.

Endless love is definitely not makjang free! There's rape & birth secrets & lots of revenge plotting far from being a "light" drama...

I'm happy about Bae Soo Bin getting another big role though!

I'm pretty sure "Endless Love" is a makjang drama disguised as a political thriller.

Okay, Endless Love may in fact be makjang. I haven't seen it myself, but it sounds like it qualifies. (It does join the others in the low ratings pile, though.)

Anything for Bae Soo Bin in public broadcast means that I can watch on my TV. :)

Wah, Samhwa Networks got back-to-back projects with KBS for weekend drama. Means that they got it for a whole year.

AFAIK the males who have been cast so far are Bae Soo Bin, Oh Chang Suk, and Lee Pil Mo. I initially thought that Oh Chang Suk was the main lead pairing up with the youngest sister but according to this article he's meant for Lee Tae Im's character. I saw Lee Pil Mo being mentioned a few times on DCInside as the pairing for Nam Bo Ra so I'm choosing to believe that until I hear otherwise.

I like this replacement cast better actually.

Like others have mentioned, how are those dramas makjang free because there's plenty of birth secrets to go around. It may not be as crazy as Jang Bori, but it's still pretty out there.

Interesting, though, MBC had its 50 episode Twinkle Twinkle, which I enjoyed solely because of Kim Seok-hoon. That hottie is the main chemistry generator via. real expressive eyes.

I am terribly interested in this Twinkle Twinkle, because it's Bae Soo-bin for goodness' sake! This guy is too underrated, that piece of reality saddens me. And Jang Shin-young, loved her in My Spring Day! (And heckyeah, I LOVE My Spring Day to the moon and back! How could an awesome drama gem be possible in dramaland?)

I love that Twinkle Twinkle because of its male and female leads. Totally hate the second female lead but after awhile (seeing how birth secret/switch babies are treated in other dramas) I think I become in love with Twinkle Twinkle more.

And like JB I totally love Birth of Beauty. How could you not love it?. Joo Sang Wook forever!

Lastly, I'm one of those who is rooting for Bae Soo Bin as a male lead.
