So Ji-sub, Kim Ji-won

  • So Ji-sub (Master’s Sun) and Kim Ji-won (Gap-dong) are collaborating on a web drama titled Good Day. Filming has begun, and the production company is being very secretive about the experimental project. All we know so far is that it will be about a man who finds Jeju Island, and scenes will be filmed there for a couple of weeks (cue rabid So Ji-sub fans descending upon the tourist destination) before moving to Seoul. [Osen]
  • Rain’s next project is the Chinese drama Diamond Lover (a working title), and he’s scored one of the biggest guarantees ever for an Asian star, roughly $545,000 USD. He’ll play the representative of the world’s largest diamond company, an elite business professional who is a consummate gentleman but also cold and guarded. His character is a man who carefully weighs the pros and cons of every decision he makes, but through the discovery of true love, his walls will break down and he’ll be revealed as a romantic at heart. Tiffany Tang will play his costar, and the show will be directed by Zhang Chen Ming, who directed the original Fated To Love You. [Osen]

  • Confirmations are in for the weekend drama My Heart Twinkle Twinkle (previously called Goddess of Sales). While previous descriptions of the show indicated a poor-versus-rich storyline, the latest articles seem to indicate a shift in focus to… chicken? The show will still be about a revenge-seeking heroine, but will now use chicken as a theme to tie two households together, and will focus on the growth and victories of the two families. Kim Jung-eun (Oohlala Spouses) is the eldest daughter of a family who owns a chicken restaurant. Kim Su-ro (A Gentleman’s Dignity) is her husband, the cold-hearted owner of a rival chicken shop (ooh, drama!). Lee Tae-im (Jang Gook Becomes Dallae) is the second sister, a pretty and talented girl who sinks into despair when her first love fizzles. Nam Bora (I Only Want To Love) is the youngest sis, a girl who’s proud of her modest chicken restaurant heritage. She uncovers a secret upon her father’s death and struggles to avenge him. She shares a loveline with Oh Chang-seok (Jang Bori Is Here), who will play a second-generation chaebol who can’t resist helping those in need. My Heart Twinkle Twinkle airs after Legendary Witch on SBS in January. [My Daily]

  • Kim Jung-eun, Kim Su-ro, Nam Bora, Lee Tae-im

  • The popular tvN fusion sageuk drama Queen In-hyun’s Man is being remade for China, and will air on one of China’s biggest broadcast channels, Hunan TV. Called simply The Queen’s Man, Boran Jing and Zheng Shuang are in talks to play the leads. In an unusual move, the producers of The Queen’s Man are planning a live-shoot, even though Chinese TV shows are usually shot well in advance. [TV Report]
  • The cast of Punch attended a script reading a couple of weeks ago, and here’s a plot tidbit we previously didn’t know about: Kim Rae-won (Thousand Day Promise) and Kim Ah-joong (Sign) play ex-spouses and parents to a young daughter. Oomph, that already adds depth and sadness to the plot, which revolves around Kim Rae-won as a section chief prosecutor with a terminal illness. He’s intent on fighting corruption in the workplace, and it sounds like he and his ex-wife are willing to put aside their differences to join efforts for his last stand. In addition to the confirmations we’d previously heard about, Ohn Joo-wan (Surplus Princess and Seo Ji-hye (49 Days) have confirmed and will be rounding out the cast. Punch will air after Secret Door on SBS in mid-December. [Dong A]

  • Punch

  • Famed director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) has signed up to take on his second Hollywood project, a sci-fi thriller being produced by Rumble Films called Second Born. Based on a script by David Jagernauth, the plot revolves around the ability to store an individual’s consciousness on a microchip, and the existence of a black market where body-swapping takes place. [Osen]
  • Beginning next January, KBS will begin airing a primetime miniseries on Friday nights. A KBS source said the station was still deliberating between airing two episodes back-to-back on Fridays, from 10PM to 12AM, or a single episode during the 11PM hour. The source wouldn’t release further details, but said that the show had already been selected and that casting had begun. [Joongang]
  • Pride and Prejudice will not air next Tuesday as a result of the live broadcast of the Korean national team’s international friendly soccer (or for those outside of the States, football) match. No word yet on whether the show will conclude with an odd number of episodes or be extended or cut by an episode. [Star News]

A chinese version of Queen In-hyun's Man would be cool. But, it will be hard to match Yoo In Na's brand of bubbly. I fear someone else might make that type of role over-sweet; probably annoying. BUT, I guess I'll find out later. :D

Zheng Shuang will DEFINITELY go there to annoyingly cutesy. I feel like that's her thing.

Yoo In Na was adorably bubbly as Choi Hee Jin.

What's with these web dramas lately??? It's always so short I don't even understand and when I begin to care about the characters it's almost over! Beside it's hard to find subs! I want a SJS drama and I'll have to settle for web drama!

Tiffany Tang is pretty adorable in The Perfect Couple even though it was just too many episodes for me to keep going with ... she could be very cute with Rain.

Not liking the pairing of So Ji Sub with Kim Ji-won... not a fan of Kim Ji-won and don't think she's a mature enough actress to match up with Ji Sub (in both age and acting skills).

Yeah, with actors of So Ji Sub's caliber, you have to get someone comparable in acting skills or else all their imperfections get magnified exponentially.

Thank you. His acting is hyped up, but's average at best. I think the Master's Sun tricked us into thinking he was good, but even there he was outshined by Gong Hyo Jin.
But don't get me wrong, he's my acting bias for a reason

I think he's ridiculously overrated much in the levels of other many 87ers I won't name. His acting is mediocre and so are his projects before Master's Sun. I'd say Kim Ji-won is in the same level - maybe not in experience but surely in acting talent.

I do not agree with you. So ji sub is a very talented and versatile actor. His acting was perfect in all his dramas especially in Cain & Abel, Road number 1, I'm sorry I love you, Master's Sun and in his movie Rough cut. He can express different emotions with his eyes. In Master's sun which was different from his other projects he really did a good job in his portrayal of the CEO. He was funny and at the same time very deep and charismatic. I love Gong Hyo Jin in Master's Sun and I love her in Thank You with Jang Hyuk but not really fan of her in Greatest Love (when I compare her to Kim Sun Ah who played with Cha Seung Won in City Hall) or Pasta. I keep rewatching Master's Sun for So ji sub and I find the dialogues between him and Gong hyo jin very subtle and well written.

0

@Rose - Fair enough, you don't have to agree. Acting assessment is based on the individual watching because the actor has to convince a viewer of the character being portrayed. He's mediocre if I'm being nice because mostly, I find him aloof and out of zone in most of his roles.

But that's my personal opinion, just like I think Jang Geun-suk is a fantastic actor - he needs to pick a watchable drama! - but some may not agree.

Kim Ji Won is easily one of the most versatile and talented actresses if her generation.....have you even seen her in any projects besides Gapdongi? She was even praised for her role in the much hated Heirs, it's nonsense to diss a girl who can play characters as different as what she played in Heirs, What's Up and Anticipate Love. She always makes more out if her characters than what is there in the script, and that is acting talent all right.

0

@pigsnout - Okay seriously? Either you aren't reading right or you like to put things in people's mouths.

First: I never dissed her. I said she was the same level of SJS which I still believe is true. Where you think that view is nonsense or not is quite irrelevant because its an opinion I can very well have and express whenever I want.

Second: I did see Heirs - so yes, I've watched her in something other than Gapdong. I never said I didn't.

Third: Even if she were praised to the world's end, I could care less as it wouldn't change my opinion that she isn't yet the acting talent some are making her seem to be. I don't go by what others see, I go by what I see.

I feel the same way. I look forward to every sis drama and then am so disappointed that his magnetism and hotness never transmit to the screen. I find him boring as an actor. Can look at him forever though.

You can not see his hotness on the screen!! Boring as an actor!! I don't think so! As someone said before in Master's Sun review:
"In fact, I’d be a happy one if someone decided to do a one-man show with SJS. (Please! Please! Please!) If there was a planet where only one man could live, say like in The Little Prince, then SJS would be it for me. Forget his chemistry with GHJ, this man has the most amazing chemistry with himself. All I can do is stare, with my jaw sticking out in awe"

I find it funny that there are people here who scramble to make excuses for fourth-rate idol actresses and no-talent rookie actresses' total lack of acting skill, but that the girls who actually have some talent and show it through performances, get dissed like this. Kim Ji Won may be young but she can act....if the script gives her even the smallest chance to show her ability, she will show it.

I'll pull a really petty one here and say Rain is actually receiving around 6 Million bucks for the Chinese drama instead of 500k. At least from all the reports I've read in english. Anyway, I just know he's swimming in moolah although dubbed Rain is so not ideal. But I do love Tang Yan and she always has amazing chemistry with her co-stars so I expect a lot from them together. The story is meh but its Rain. Nuff said.

As for the QIHM remake... I hope they can capture the heart-stopping, epic and sweeping romance that was so prominent in the Korean one. Besides a well told story, the romance was really the heart of QIHM along with the chemistry. I'll stay positive although I don't expect much.

The $545,000 US dollars is the price that my hubby and I paid for our three bedroom small house. I hope Rain uses that money wisely.

This may be irrelevant to this news bite article but it is still a news bite.
I read in an article that Kim Ok Ja, passed away on the morning of Nov.16 after losing battling lung cancer.
I suddenly realized that the veteran actress name is kinda famiar in my ears, and it turn out that I am correct. She is one of the noonas in Noonas Over Flowers that Dramabeans used to recap. And I still kinda remember, how she talks about her life and her illness during interviews in the series..

I can feel that the cast and crew, and ofcourse, Na PD of NOF will be shock and sad by her passing.

May she rest in peace. Eternal peace grant unto her oh Lord

This is terribly sad and totally caught me off guard. I did not even know she was sick so it feels like a sucker punch to read here that she passed away. I loved her in so many dramas--esp her in two of my all time favs especially -- Coffee Prince & My Name is Kim Sam Soon.

KJO was the mother in the very 1st K-drama I watched, as well as being Han-kyul's mother in "Coffee Prince" - so she will always be what I picture when I think of the protypical K-drama mother (she was great at playing the understanding mother since she had such a warm smile).

She passed away too young (damn you cancer!).

Rain and big price tag, will bring out the chinese netzines with attacks on coming to china just for the money, taking away acting jobs from chinese and so on, hope they handle it carefully. And speaking on working in China, isnt RM's Ace also heading there to make a drama or film? Wonder if that mean she going to take a break from RM..makes me think on the bad ratings for the show..a break leading to leaving..and the show ending..

@Mandy- If for you Jang geun suk (or other many 87ers) is a fantastic actor, it's okay it's your opinion but you don't need to mention So ji sub acting mediocre or ridiculously overrated... unless you want to gain some points by this comparison for your fantastic actor!

So Jib Sub's acting is overrated. Call me bias, but in my opinion only two korean actors are very versatile. Jo In Sung and Eric Mun. Forget about the ratings (since it can't judge the quality of drama itself), but both guys already acted in different genre of dramas and always take challenging roles from melodrama, actions, romcom, saeguk or historical dramato comedy. Other than this two...they all play safe and take similar character and genres.

C'mon now.

Eric's acting only recently got a lot better and all the aforementioned don't even compare to the best Korean actors like Han Seok-kyu , Kim Gap-soo, Lee Beom-soo, Ryu Seung-ryong, etc.

And if we are going to go younger - Lee Je-hoon, Gong-yoo, Song Joong-ki, etc.

Eric is new to me since I know him after watching Discovery of Love. I think he has very wide range of emotions. And after hearing here and there, I watched Super Rookie and Que Sera Sera, which make me thing he is really good actor and kind of very versatile. Wondering why he just has very few drama list.

Don't believe what people say before you see and judge by yourself. Some people like to underestimate someone's ability. Eric's acting always good from the beginning. I watched all of his dramas from Phoenix era. I admit he was a bit awkward at the beginning of episodes in Phoenix. Even so, he could balance Lee Seo Jin considering he was a newbie. He shined in Super Rookie and carried the storyline nicely since his costars Han Ga In and Oh Ji Ho were a bit limited in emotions LOL. Again, in Korea Secret Agency, he did pretty well. Comedy drama isn't easy to carried out and Eric did well in both series. The next was Que Sera Sera. I think he was really perfect as Kang Tae Joo. Then in saeguk drama, Chill Woo, the story was strange, but the acting for all casts were okay. The last one is Spy Myung Wol, everyone knows how mess the story line but people admit the casts did good job till the end especially Eric. And the current drama Discovery of Romance. His character Kang Tae Ha is a mix between dorky character in Super Rookie and Jung Min character in Phoenix, so it's easy for him to carried out. So, as you said, he's very versatile. And I believe if he isn't really busy to divide his schedule with his group band Shinhwa, he'll be more shines in k-drama and the unique thing is he has Hollywood vibe that I couldn't see in other actors.

Wow, So Ji Sub is back - and with Kim Ji Won! Can't wait to watch this web drama.

So Ji Sub is a good actor - and it means that while he still can improve, he's actually already a good actor. Or the other way round - whichever one prefers. It's just that I think he often choose roles that emphasize the cooler side of him. He's a very expressive actor and that I think is what make him a great actor. Sadly, that kind of persona also almost always pigeonholed him into tragic roles in order for his acting skills to be noted artistically. Like, I'm Sorry I Love You and What Happened In Bali. I was so affected by ISILY that it took me almost five years to even click the link on its fan mv clips in youtube. It's ten years since the drama was released and I still haven't re-watch it. The same with WHIB. He's that good to leave such a seemingly lasting impression actually. Granted, all actors have their fair share of lousy roles pick so it'd be great to give them a pass once in a while. Anyway, I'm not really looking forward to watching SJS in a tragic role again, but I'm all for him taking a different roles with a script that showcases his abilities well.

As for Kim Ji Won, I've watched her in Horror Stories 1 & 2, To The Beautiful You and The Heirs. I think while her list is not that long yet, she actually has potentials - maybe not spectacularly so, but enough to jumpstart her strongly. Whether they will be polished good or fall flat though, like all actors/actresses, she must pick good roles.

These two people really seem to be polar opposite to me. I'm curious at how the drama will pan out. Keeping my fingers crossed!
