Kim Seul-gi, Yoon Hyun-min
- Those who mourned the conclusion of Discovery of Romance this past week and who have already started missing the adorkable second leads, Kim Seul-gi (Sol) and Yoon Hyun-min (Joon-ho), need not fret. Both have been offered roles in drama specials during MBC’s Drama Festival, which brings together young directors and new and established writers, and each director/writer duo will collaborate to create a compelling single-episode story. The only sad part about Kim Seul-gi and Yoon Hyun-min being offered lead parts is that they’re not for the same episode. Kim has been offered the leading role in Won-nyeo’s Diary, and should she take it, filming could begin as early as next week. Meanwhile Yoon has confirmed his casting in House, Mate (a working title), which will likely be broadcast in mid-November. Awww, would it be that hard to do one-episode reuniting the two cuties? [Joongang, Herald]
- Park Ha-sun (Temptation) has been cast as the lead in a Chinese film titled Chumong. The upcoming blockbuster, which has a budget of 10 billion won, or just over $9 million USD, will portray the love between a man and a woman in China 2,500 years ago, and between a couple in the present day. While it’s unknown if the stories will merely be told in parallel or if time travel will be involved, Park will play a princess from the past, and Yishan Zhang will play her partner. The actress is currently in China and will continue filming in Beijing and Ningbo until December. [DongA]
- In a surprising move, TV Chosun has changed the broadcast schedule for Park Shi-yeon’s Greatest Marriage, cutting an episode a week and pushing back the time slot in an effort to appeal to younger audiences. It formerly aired on Saturdays and Sundays at 8:30PM, but beginning October 11, Greatest Marriage will air once a week on Saturdays, in the prime 11PM slot. The show was envisioned to be a 16-episode drama concluding in November, but with the change in scheduling (and barring any cutbacks), the show will extend into December. [TV Report]
- Park Hae-jin is set to reunite with director Jin Hyuk and the crew of Doctor Stranger on the sequel to a popular 2011 Chinese drama, FHM 2 (English title: Men). Known as a Sex and the City-type show for men, Park Hae-jin will play one of the leads, along with Chinese actors Zhang Liang and Xinbo Fu. FHM 2 will be a joint venture between a Chinese production company and Korean media conglomerate CJ E&M, and filming will begin in mid-November for a release next year. [MBN]
- KBS’s daily show Cuckoo’s Nest (also known as Two Mothers) has been extended. Originally intended to be a 100-episode show, it got preempted for a few weeks due to the Asian Games, and when it wasn’t able to air its 100th episode last week, those involved held out hope for an extension. They got more than what they had bargained for: A KBS source confirmed the show would be extended, but the network wasn’t sure how many more episodes the show would be allotted, meaning that there’s currently no end date in sight. That’s good news for lovers of crazy melodramatic antics, of which there are a fair number; last week’s episodes garnered over 20% viewership. [Osen]
- Yeon Jung-hoon (I Summon You, Gold) has been cast in Jackie Chan’s upcoming Hollywood film, Skiptrace. He’ll work with director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, The Long Kiss Goodnight) and will play a villain in the movie — the right-hand man of the boss of a notorious criminal organization. Jackie Chan will play a Hong Kong detective who partners with an American professional gambler, portrayed by Johnny Knoxville, to take down the bad guys, and Fan Bing Bing will play Chan’s niece, who gets tangled up in the villains’ plot. (The synopsis sounds suspiciously like Chan’s other Hollywood movies, but who needs ingenuity when you’ve got a formula that works?) Yeon has headed to China already to begin filming, and is expected to be on locale in Beijing, Nanning, Hong Kong and Macau until mid-December. [XSports News]

Yoon Hyun-min is one of those odd actors who has chemistry with literally any cast member, male or female. Sol and Joon-ho were easily the most watchable part of DOR for me.
And I've adored Kim Seul-gi since she played the panda-eyed editor in Flower Boy Next Door, I can't believe she's so young! (turned 23 yesterday, from what wiki says)
I would kill to see her reunite with Go Kyung-pyo, sadly k-Nodame has claimed him for now.

Am so happy to hear about Kim Seul-gi, and yes... blew me away when I read she is so young. When I read up on her I saw she was also a cast member on Seasons 1-4 of Saturday Night Live Korea, and apparently created many notable characters herself. A Korean Gilda Radner?
I read someone's comments elsewhere where they compared her to Gong Hyo-jin. I can see it. I sure hope she gets some meaty leading roles.
BTW, does anyone know a good source for subbed Saturday Night Live Korea? I've only seen a few clips here and there on Youtube.

Renny Harlin still gets work? He hasn't been a very popular news subject in Finland for a while (a Finn here)
Why, Kim Seul Gi and Yoon Hyun were adorklable. She's such a great actress and I love her in Surplus princess (comedy gold)

But that's the only good news here, what's up with PHJ and YJH going for foreign shows.

Right, WHYYYYY?! It's bad enough to watch The Three Musketeers and High School, Love On once a week, but a twice/week drama cut back to one episode/week? That's just cruel. Now they're messing with my kdrama schedule big time - !Yah! You wanna die?

The rating for Episode 5 rose to 0.807% so hopefully the move to change the time slot is working. Let's hope that the rating continues to rise so that we can get to enjoy 16 full episodes of PSY, BSB, NMW & Co :)

Awwww! I was so excited to see Yoon Hyun Min's picture! But I wish he was a lead in a longer drama. A big one with a good story too.
I first fell for him in Heartless City and then fell for him again in Witch's Romance. Two very different roles yet he nailed them.

I thought his role in WR even outshone his role in DOR. He was really good in DOR but holy cow, WR! The bromance with Park Seo Jun! The cuuuuuutest.

awww Yoon Hyun-min and Kim Seul-gi aren't on the same episodes!
I think the return of the Drama Specials is a good thing, maybe MBC will start giving young actresses a shot at lead in full series again after seeing how they do in specials, instead of running after idols like the networks have been doing for the last few years.

Hi. I'm relatively new to Korean drama, came across it last month and have watched about 4 so far. Could anyone suggest a few good romcoms to watch? I don't follow Korean, so i can watch on if subtitles are available.

hi Ambond, this could be not a good time to start watching korean dramas with subs, as you will need to dig dig deep in some websites to find any k-drama with good (English) subs.
*everyone's here talking about this issue in the other post (see "odds and ends")*
but well, rom com would be a good idea to watch, since you might find it is so frustrating to get access to the drama (prepare some hair-pulling actions while you're searching frustratingly through the internet..after that immerse yourself in the romantic comedy, good healing ;)
ok, the reommended rom com?
well, i watch mostly melo these days, so my rom com recent favourites will be limited to 'Let's Eat' (aside from actors, this drama cast many delicious food too :D it comes from 2013, i guess), and have you watched Master Sun? depend on your definition of romantic comedy though, since Master Sun is a drama with lots of ghost but i still find it as a rom com :p this one is also produced last year.
this site, dramabeans, has the recap list of many korean dramas, old and new ones, so looking around the recap is a good place to start too, just to get some ideas on which drama worth your time (and energy, to pull your hair out, haha)..
happy watching!

Hi Azkiya! Thank you for replying :)
I'm from India and without subs I'll not understand a thing :( I managed to watch You are beautiful on youtube with eng subs, I really liked it. So far I've watched You are beautiful, Heartstrings, Playful Kiss, Boys over Flower, Personal Taste. I'm trying to watch Fated to love you but youtube has the taiwanese version instead of the korean one!
i'm literally pulling my hair!I'll check out the thread odds ans ends.
I've come across Master's Sun while hunting for what to watch next. Will give it a try, thank you.:)

Hi ambond,
I agree with azkiya, Master's Sun is one of my all time favorites.
Other rom coms in my top list are:
* Answer Me 1997 (aka Reply 1997)
* Fated to Love You (hope you can find the Korean version soon)
* The Greatest Love
* King of High School (aka High School King of Savvy, or King of High School Life Conduct)
* My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (aka My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox)
* Pasta
Like azkiya said about Master's Sun, these probably aren't considered typical rom coms, but I like their quirkiness.
You also might want to try the recent hit My Love From the Star (aka My Love From Another Star, You Who Came from the Stars -- I count 7 alternate names, so I'll leave it at that.)
There are so many others that I loved, but these are just my personal favorites.
There also are many wonderful Korean movie rom coms... too many to list. (I've seen 96 K movies so far.) The 1st Korean movie I saw was Penny Pinchers, and that got me hooked. Quirky and delightful.
Just went through my list of movies. Here are a few more rom coms I'd recommend. Keep in mind they are also not typical rom coms -- at least from what I see in the US.
* Castaway on the Moon -- other people may not consider this a rom com. Definitely out of the norm. But I think it has a romantic element to it. Very inventive and just a great movie.
* Whatcha Wearin'? -- I saw this recently. It's R" rated, but truly romantic with a sense of humor.
* Windstruck -- This is a must-see! One of the most moving movies I've ever seen. Again, people may not consider this a rom com. But like many Kramas and movies, I am truly amazed how they manage to balance comedy and drama.
I hope you are able to find sources for subs soon. What sites have you tried so far? I have a good list, but let me find out first what you've tried.
Also, a few people mentioned the browser plugin called Hola, which allows you access to sites that aren't available in your location. I just installed it and am trying it out.
Happy viewing!

Also definitely the 2001 movie My Sassy Girl. This blockbuster hit is credited with helping to start the Korean wave. And without a doubt is a rom com.

Hi Revlow! Thank you so much for the list and the time you've given me. Hope to l return the favor some day.
I love Korean movies too. Watched just the one, it was about music and was good. Will have to google the names you've given me. Looks like I'm going to busy for a long time If i manage to get working videos :) Thank you.
Thank you for the Hola tip will check that out too. In india some of the videos on Viki, drama fever are blocked!
Its the balance of drama and comedy that attracted me Koren dramas. I usually watchon youtube, Viki, dramafever.
Thank you once again :)

You're welcome! Glad to share.
I'm now kind of cautious to list names of sites -- a few people just pointed out in another post that if they are mentioned it adds to the possibility that those sites will get closed down. That said, if you read through a lot of comments (particularly in the Odds and Ends post azkiya mentioned above) you'll find these alternative sites mentioned.
I also like Korean sports movies based on true stories -- I think they do them so well. Even if you're not into sports, which I'm not very much, I still recommend them. Very inspiring. Some I particularly liked:
As One (2012) — I saw this a couple weeks ago and couldn't wipe away the tears fast enough. Very moving story that you couldn't make up if you tried.
GLove (2011)
Lifting King Kong (2009)
Marathon (2005)
YMCA Baseball Team (2002)
Besides Hola, I've seen a few people mention Super VPN, VPN Cyberghost, and Anonymox. I haven't tried them so I don't know how they work. Also some people mention trying a different browser might help, but I don't know about that either. Hopefully something will work for you -- too much good stuff to miss!
Best wishes!

One site I think is okay to mention is SoompiTV at:
tv.soompi.com
You might still see people here refer to it as Kdrama.com -- the change just happened in the last week. They are a 100% legal site, like Viki or DramaFever.
Since they are fairly new, they don't have a large catalog of Kdramas or movies. However, I can sometimes find current shows there that I can't at Viki or DramaFever.
The two movies I saw recently that I really liked -- As One and Whatcha Wearin’? -- are there. Hopefully you have access to this site in India. :-)
