Na PD whips up cooking variety program with Lee Seo-jin, Taecyeon
by javabeans
This is hilarious. When it was first announced that Na PD (Na Young-seok of Grandpas, Noonas, and Youths Over Flowers) was planning a new variety program with everyone’s favorite reluctant luggage boy, Lee Seo-jin, we joked that he should just make it a cooking show. After all, he poked so much fun of Seo-jin’s cooking during Grandpas Over Flowers and even stuck a whole joke “King of Cooking” segment into an episode, just to mock him.
Well, that’s exactly what he’s done: The new Na PD–Seo-jin collaboration will be a cooking program called Three Meals a Day. I’ll give us all a moment to howl in laughter. (The photos below come from Grandpas, where Seo-jin struggled to cook Korean meals for the halbaes in hotel rooms, using ingredients scrounged from European markets and cooked via hot pots and tiny stoves.)
Three Meals a Day has also cast idol-turned-actor Taecyeon, who at first glance seems like a really strange pick, but then I recall that Taec played Seo-jin’s younger brother in the weekend series Wonderful Season. I don’t actually feel like they had much chemistry as actors, but maybe that’s because they were playing two characters with a lot of resentment and emotional baggage between them (okay, most of it was one-sided, with Taec burning with old grudges toward his hyung). I’ll remain hopeful that Taec and Seo-jin have cuter chemistry on variety as themselves, since I can see it being a fun dynamic to give Seo-jin a maknae upon whom to dump all the annoying tasks he doesn’t want to do.
As an outdoor variety show, this new program purportedly takes Na PD away from the travel concept, though not entirely: The cast will get taken to rural locales, “away from the city where it’s easy to figure out a meal, to the remote countryside where it’s the most difficult to do.” And we know it wouldn’t be a Na PD show without suffering! Furthermore, it’ll highlight sustainable and organic living along the way.
Seo-jin reportedly signed on to the show without even hearing the concept, as he did with Grandpas. Ha. Then I guess he can’t really complain when Na PD makes his life difficult in the name of entertainment. And yet, something tells me he’ll find ways to grumble anyway.
Three Meals a Day will follow Youths Over Flowers as tvN’s next Friday-night variety program. It premieres on October 17.

Right! in one of his shows you know you're going to get good ratings. And since NaPD always does a bait-and-switch, why bother getting a description.

I can't stop laughing long enough to comment.
Is he going to climb trees looking for mushrooms? Chase a goat to get some milk? Go fishing and fall into a stream?
I mean... I've seen some of the real life docu on Korean TV. I know I am just going to die laughing watching it.

YES! TEARS OF JOY!
I would love to see seo jinnie chase goats for milk / collecting eggs at a chicken house / fishing with bare hands etc. and maybe even make him do some super hard tasks or just pure luck games to "earn" his ingredients.
NA PD I LOVE UUUUUUU! haha I am definitely looking forward to the vid of kidnapping seo jinnie to his new program. He must have told Seo jinnie that he is doing a new program with a top star in JYP, *implying Suzy* but actually taecyeong :p

I gotta believe he was told that's what his maknae is for. ...But then NaPD will change the rules.
Would love to see a one person catches, the other cleans/milks/etc rule. *With SeoJinnie always getting the worse end of the bargain.*

Taecyeon is great in his singing and his acting is improving a little. Maybe Seo Jin's acting skills can rub off on him.
The concept sounds very entertaining. I love food programs, so I'm definitely going to watch. I don't know how to cook Korean dishes so it will be fun to watch.

Agreed! I'm a fan of 2PM, and I have to admit that Taecyeon's acting was pretty squirm-worthy in some of the things I've watched (ahem, Who Are You, ahem). However, he's been pretty reliable in variety shows, and he's a great host who knows how to keep the show moving along. The 2PM boys seem like a riot to be around in real life/variety shows, so maybe some of the other members will appear on the show!

Ooh, it would be great if he could travel around and scrounge for his own ingredients, like Thomasina Miers and Guy Grieve did in "The Wild Gourmets"!
Nothing like testing your survival skills (Bear Grylls style) at the same time as your cooking skills!
I'd settle for him milking some cows in exchange for some butter, or something. He's a city slicker, after all, so there's bound to be plenty of entertainment.
Best news of the day, and even better: not that long to wait - thanks jb!

But I don't like his real life personality (based on interviews, other variety shows he's been on). He strikes me as a little arrogant and craving for attention.
If not for his good looks I would have written him off long ago hah

It's easier to avoid his real-life stuff than his acting though, acting is likely to stick his horrible wooden self into a drama with other actors whom I love and want to watch, and therefore I have to put up with him by default.
I'm not exactly pleased about him being on a Na PD show either, it's not as if those need an idol for popularity but maybe he'll be tolerable?

I love taecyeon on variety shows. I guess he can come off as arrogant, but after watching so many shows with him i think he is just this giant dorky nerd that works really hard.
He likes to troll people, but also know how to make fun of himself for the sake of variety (I like to delete some FO2 scenes from my memory). Hope he can change your mind after watching the show

Hope that Taecyeon can show his real self. Taecyeon is actually a dork and hilarious to people who close to him, but sometimes he is kinda hard to approach for some people.
Yeah, sometimes he's like an arrogant person, but he's just like that to make that shows more lively and fun. In real life, he's just a modest person. Last year, he asked his fans to donate to people who need instead of giving him gifts on his birthday, he likes going around with his bike and bus, he treated 2pm's fans bread and coffee bc 2pm's fan said they're hungry (at that time they had to support 2pm in music show until midnight bc 2pm had some problems with the properties), he likes travelling like ordinary people (he bought his own ticket in economy class, going around japan with shinkansen, etc)

http://ggotbodachungchoon.wordpress.com/ -- so far they've only translated Ep 7 and 8 is in the process. Don't worry about the missing 1-6... they start with a whole new group at Ep 7. The other thing that's cool about these series is that they can add to your knowledge of actors.
Congratulations on your introduction to Kdramas! And so sorry. As anyone here can tell you, it's an addiction! I've only been watching for one and 1/2 yrs, and it's a daily habit. But, oh, but sooo enjoyable!

So far I've completed 49 dramas. Started at least a dozen more I realized weren't my cup of tea and stopped. Currently watching 13. I had to create a speadsheet to keep track. Have also seen 95 Korean movies.
These numbers don't include drama specials or variety/ reality shows. I'm a sick puppy, but a happy one!

Just a suggestion but you can use the mydramalist website to organize your dramas. It's a very handy way to keep what you've seen, what you're watching, or what you want to see in order and rate everything. And you can share the list with other people.
The site also has JDrama/Movie, CDrama/Movie, and TWDrama/Movie listings if you're interested in dramas/movies that aren't Korean too.
If you're curious, my profile name on there is "ravensnest"

49, wow! I think I'm probably close to 20. Haven't started any movies yet. There is no way I could watch 13 at the same time! Right now I'm watching Discovery of Romance, Secret Hotel, The Night Watchman, Blade Man, Surplus Princess, High School Love On and She's So Lovable. Omo, listing all that out actually shows me I'm an addict.
The ones that I actually like watching? Secret Hotel, Blade Man, High School Love On, She's So Lovable. The other 3 I am struggling through because they are almost done.

Thanks theravennest! I hadn't heard of mydramalist before. Whoa! Your stats are insane! LOL. I will definitely look at your recommendations.
I just signed up. It doesn't seem to have the 2 main things my spreadsheet helps me with: 1) What sources have Eng subs of a series, so I don't hunt every time; and 2) what episode I'm on and how many total are in the series. But I haven't looked around much on mydramalist, so maybe that's there.
I've been keeping myself away from Jdramas, etc. for now. I also kept myself away from Kpop and other Korean music for a long time... didn't need another addiction. That ship has sailed.
I didn't include other Asian movies in my list. I've been watching Japanese movies (and from other countries) since I was a kid. Literally. I saw Seven Samurai and Rashomon when I was 9. In college when I'd want to pump myself up for a test I'd try to think of myself as Toshirô Mifune or Tatsuya Nakadai. :-D
I know what you mean Pinkington. Too many times I've continued grinding through a Kdrama just 'cause I've invested X number of episodes. Only a few turn themselves around at the end. I'm trying to get better about letting them loose. There are a few current ones I should.

Ha, besides the awesomeness that is Na PD and Seo Jinnie's re-teaming, I love the idea of an organic and sustainable concept. It just goes to show how important a concept is and with the right casting because two people can make for a highly entertaining show. I've seen interviews with Seo Jinnie and Taec, and they're adorably fun together. And it was cute when they were on 'I Live Alone' with Ryu Seung Soo and Kim Kwang Kyu. I sorta wished Ryu Seung Soo was on this new show because he's variety gold, but yay for a muscular maknae for Seo Jinnie! I'm sure those muscles will come to use when they scour the land for food. :)
