Kim Soo-hyun eyes new drama role in Dr. Frankenstein
by javabeans
Is it the year of the split personality or what? Kim Soo-hyun (You From Another Star) is reportedly considering a drama titled Dr. Frankenstein as his next project, where the lead character is a brilliant doctor with multiple personality disorder. Does… he also create a monster that goes on the rampage that he must destroy?
The character is cold and doesn’t show his emotions easily, but starts to change gradually upon falling in love with a woman. That’s all well and good, but I wanna know more about the Frankenstein part of this. I can see where you might extrapolate this character out of the classic mad scientist figure, but is the show going to have any genre elements at all, or is this purely a metaphor?
According to Kim’s reps at Keyeast, he has received the synopsis for the drama as well as scripts for the first two episode. While he is considering the role, he hasn’t decided anything yet and is also considering a few other potential projects.
I don’t know how I feel about this show without knowing what the actual plot ends up being, but we can find some encouragement in the writing credits; Kim Tae-hee previously wrote the sageuk drama King Sejong the Great and the charming fusion rom-com-historical show Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Dr. Frankenstein has not yet secured a broadcaster or a timeslot, though you can bet that if Kim Soo-hyun signed on, those would fall in line in a hurry. The man is ratings gold, and he’s on fi-yah.

I agree but... not really :)) IF the character has split personalities... it will be a much more demanding role than DMJ. Do Min Joon was cold but a loving human being in the inside. He doesn't really have split personalities. He is just reserved. This to me sounds more like a medical/ psychological drama like It's Okay It's Love.
I JUST CAN'T WAIT FOR HIS RETURNS. HAVEN'T WATCHED ANYTHING SINCE MLFTS...I'M STILL IN WITHDRAWAL.

What's up with leads with multiple personalties. It's like 2014's time traveling dramas, remember how we were showered with time travelers in 2012-13. Have the writers lost all their creativity that they jump on one idea that's forwarded.
Granted the time travelers had quite different stories and were entertaining but it was kind of redundant.
Anyways let's see how both Hyun Bin and Kim Soo Hyun act out all their multiple personalties, I am personally rooting for Hyun Bin more.

I kind of think it is deliberate. don´t know HOW the producers benefit, but there must be something we miss.
anyway, it is about time to return!
I liked My Love From The Star, but his acting wasn´t really THE stand-out there for me. kinda too easy...
hopefully this will bring out more sides of him.

it doesn't rain but it pours in dramaland.
maybe instead of taking the risk of having a genre spread they tend to all squeeze their offerings together to even out their shares of the ratings pie? Following the same logic in economics where shops selling similar wares tend to all crowd together in one place rather than spread out.

I'm beginning to think its not a lack of creativity, but a competition: something in the vein of "Anything you can do I can do better." Plus it sometimes benefits us since when casting rolls around we get to see our favorites (and sometimes our banes) making it their own...or not.
Anyway I think all actors should play split personality/body-swap at least once. It gives you a really good idea as to their range. I fell in love with Yoon Kye-sang after Who Are You, after which I decided that such a role is a gold standard. Of course its not the only way and it could get old, but it helps not having to watch a ton of project with an actor/actress you're not sure about, you can just skip to something definitive like this to see the extent of their ability. This is one thing in dramaland I see as glass-half-full. Plus I love watching psychological disorders play out on screen (done right).

I think it could also follow the old Marketing 101 behavior-based adoption cycle:
Innovators - Unique vision plus a willingness to take risks.
Early Adopters - Opinion leaders that recognize trends early.
Early Majority - Adopt trends after they're proven.
Late Majority - Cautious about change or adopting trends.
Laggards - Prefer repeating what worked in the past.

Why you bother to comments in his article if you don't want to watch his drama and just pretend to know everything. I don't think you watch all his dramas to judge him just being "pretty". For me, i have watch many dramas and i love japanese dramas more but korean actors that really attract my interested are lee jun ki and kim soo hyun only because of their acting.

You can voice your opinion once the drama already air. What your intention to bad mouth right now if the dramas still looking for the it cast?. For me different people have different preferences. I watch secretly greatly first and i am really loving it because it has everything what i want and Kim Soo Hyun acting very outstanding. Then i read some COMMENTS saying The man from nowhere (Won bin film) much more better. So i very excited to watch it but after i watch it i don't really liking it as much i loving secretly greatly. You cannot judge and talk like you know by just reading the recap or people opinion.

If Kim Soo Hyun's acting is so so, no one would have bought the love in MLFAS. Don't tell me it's just Jeon Ji Huyn because the whole entire story is banking on the desires of two people wanting to be together. He looks much younger than her and it could have gone bad. How about with Han Ga In, there was no chemistry but still he managed to pull it off. If that many people watched the show, it wasn't because they are all his fans. Why does Dream High stand out? Because it's the only one he got to act his age with believable love interest. Many other actors stand there and be pretty but he's not one of them.

Totally agreed with your comments. In my opinion, he is overrated. He acted to be the king in TMBTS. In You from the Star, he acted to be a professor who looked like a high school kid in front of those collage students. I could not stop laughing at those scenes. I think the female lead lighted up the screen instead of him. I even think the second male lead acted much better than him in You from the Star.

But doesn't being a "Hater" go beyond just offering a divergent opinion? Hate attack's a person's identity, not just their preferences.
To me the comment isn't so much hateful as it is unsubstantiated. For instance, one thing we can really appreciate about his acting was called to our attention here on DB. It's that when he cries, he has a unique talent for making it seem like he's desperately trying to hold it back. But failing. His talent at doing that really does seem better than most. I was more objectively interested in how the YFAS story was being told than in any of the individual characters. But the scenes where he was breaking down emotionally...they really hit me in the heart.

I can't understand haters seriously. If you do not like an actor and you happen to pass by an article about him then just pass by it. That's what normal people do. If you don't like the actor then why should you care about him or his dramas. Why do you bother clicking his articles, reading it and then commenting hate comments and then even reply to other commenters spreading hate. What the hell do you get from that?! Or are you just that obsess with them even more than their own fans that after seeing their name, you just click the article and started hating and replying to comments. This is not just for Kim Soo Hyun but even for other actors and actress too. I noticed haters always do that. Is it jealousy? Insecurity? I seriously wanna know why you do that because for me when I do not like someone I just pass by their article and don't even bother reading or commenting at all since I do not care about them. They are just not relevant to me.

Personally I express my point of view because I want the channels to see I'd rather have a talented actor/actress instead of one I think is bad. Once the artist is cast & the drama starts, it's to late to express my opinion & eventually influence the choice of the Producer.

I think you're giving Kdrama production companies too much credit if you think they monitor what non-Korean (and non-Chinese) viewers are saying online. I never said it was wrong to voice one's opinion. Since ThoseWhoKnowMe answered that the reason he/she leaves even what may be perceived by others as "negative" remarks about an actor he/she does not find talented is that he/she can influence the producers that way, I asked whether he/she really believes that.
There are things over which I would voice my opinions even if nothing comes from that because I consider them that important. Whether I like an actor or not, whether this drama sucks compared to another version etc. are not that important to me that I have to say over and over again.

Someone saying that they don't think he's a great actor isn't hate, though. It's just an opinion, and people have the right to have those opinions and to voice them. Plus it's a perfectly adequate way of avoiding group-think, or a hive mentality. Rather than a narrow view of an actor/actress/station/show, you get a well-rounded look, plus your own two cents. And everyone is at perfect liberty to express those two cents. That's why we love Dramabeans.

Some people are of the mentality that all criticism of their favourites, even criticism of their performance and public behaviour, comes from "trolls". I don't think those people know the meaning of the word troll.
I've seen everything, from the site's writers being attacked to commenters being stalked across sites with accusations of "hater" by some people who appear unhealthily invested in defending a celebrity who they will probably never meet. The notion that the only opinions that should be expressed are positive ones, is childish tbqh.

Sorry, but this isn't a fansite, you can't police people's opinions (and yes, people have a right to express negative opinions too)
Most of us are adults here so we should be capable of hearing criticism about our biases' abilities without the knee-jerk reaction that whoever is saying it is a hater. I manage to do that for the actors I like, and I expect that other actors' fans should show other commenters that courtesy as well.
And considering that no one here has criticised Kim Soo-hyun's looks, personality or private life, only his professional ability, it's a little juvenile to call it "hate".

Well, how can you be sure that some of these comments are not based on hate? I'm sure there are people here who are voicing their honest opinions but let's be realistic. There are definitely trolls out there who are simply spreading hate. This is my honest opinion and I don't expect everyone to agree with me.

Something being your "opinion" re: negative commenters being trolls, does not make it a fact.
Sometimes people genuinely have a low opinion of an actor's abilities, it's not "spreading hate" to say so. Actors I like get criticised too, but I'm not childish enough to dismiss the critics under the excuse of "there are trolls out there!". Dramabeans, if anything, is good at sniffing out the trolls because they make it that obvious (still remembering the one who hated everyone except Lee Min Ho, lol)

@Krys11, its part of the fun babe, so deal with it. I am a fan of KSH but I really don't mind all the negative comments about him. Of course there are some are haters, trollers, antis and whatever, but it also happen with any other actors as well.
Like, I really dislike Kardashians but I still click on their articles and read the LOL comments.

what's wrong with Korean drama world?!!! why they suddenly decide to do the same concept all together?! I find it interesting how different writers write about a same concept all at once!!!
I have no idea how this gonna be, sure if KSH accepts, it is worth to watch, plus as long as he do the project there is no worry about other actors!!;)

What's all these new dramas that have main leads with "multiple personality disorders"? Is this the new trend in dramas, like adultery was a few months ago, and time travel was in 2012?
Geesh.... now for a more original concept!

Here's a way of keeping the conflict fresh for the next variation of this formula (which I'd like to point out that not only dramaland does this): instead of cold prickly heroes becoming better by love, whether they're prickly because they're a human porcupine, or split personality, or mommy/daddy never loved them/died early/ dead first love, etc, instead of becoming a better person from the love of a woman, why not a dog, or a child, or a monster (in this case), an alien, an inspiring book, a love of food, caring for the elderly, a sport...something. anything. Not to say they can't fall in love, but it be nice to show that romance is not the only impetus for change in the entire universe a little more often.
Anyway more to the point: too soon to tell. I will remain safe on the fence until further information is revealed.

I had to google to understand what Cassiopeia was in k-ent...
But if you're trying to shade Kim Jaejoong and Park Yoochun for their latest acting efforts and trying to say they're way inferior to Kim Soo-hyun, you're wrong.
Kim Soo-hyun got his breakout by being better than a lot of his truly horrible idol costars in a very well written drama, but he is not even close to as good as Jung So-min (yes, a girl), or his other male contemporaries Seo In-gook, Kang Haneul and Lee Joon. He just has more star power, is all.

"The character is cold and doesn’t show his emotions easily, but starts to change gradually upon falling in love with a woman."
God so hard to read this without feeling uncomfortable...
it's pretty much the summary of most popular kdramas.
But I end up enjoying those the mots anyway(guilty*)
Still hard to read :S

Oohhh I like KSH, but haven't watched many of his dramas so I'd like to see more of his acting.
The whole split persona thing just reminded me of Hyun Bin's Hyde, Jekyll, Me drama though.

I really hope they give a talented young rookie actress the lead role here, if the script calls for a younger heroine. Because with Kim Soo-hyun as a leading man, they don't need the leading lady to be an idol to pull in ratings, but she should be a good actress!
It's high time the likes of Kim Ji-won, Lee Yubi and Han Groo started getting their big breaks, anyway - no more Jin Se-yeons and Go Sung-hees, chaebal...

Honestly, I like Kim Soo-hyun well enough, but he's not really someone that makes me want to actively seek out or keep up with his projects. And the premise for some reason, I don't know, I just feel like I'd rather watch something else? I'll wait until more info comes out first though. Who knows, it could be really interesting and I do like the writer :)

I love Kim Soo Hyun!!!! Can't wait to see him in any sort of new project! There will always be haters no matter how good you are... I've learned to accept that. He's so popular this year that it's easy to attract hate and criticisms. It's hard for fans from other fandoms to not be jealous. It's definitely hard to read some of these nasty comments but it won't change my views on him. I'll support him in whatever drama or movie he chooses. If it bombs, that's ok too. He's still young and he's already so successful. Fighting Kim Soo Hyun!!!!!

This is getting ridiculous. So all it takes is for one drama to come up with a relatively fresh concept and soon enough it's gonna get beaten to death until they get it out of their systems and the next trend comes along. So let me get this straight, this is the third split personality drama that has been announced so far (Kill Me Heal Me and Hyde, Jekyll, Me being the other two). At this rate I'll probably not watch any of them. This blatant, boring repetition of concept simply sucks out any form of excitement I might have.

Am I the only one who is wary of this? I mean, I love KSH to death and I have seen all his dramas but every doctor related show I have seen has been a flop (well not Dae Jang Geum, but I'm not sure that counts.) Maybe I am just a bit wary of the genre all together but I have a feeling that this show is just going to be a ball of weird. I guess I'm the only one hoping he will pick a different project...

err..no, just no. This complex role is better with actors like shin ha kyung, jang hyuk or lee beom soo. And their facial, phsyical fit the Frankenstein too..I mean, since when frankenstein is a flower boy? doesn't make sense..and I can't totally imagine kim soo hyun acts in multiple personality..because his acting sorry to say, just average.

I could see why this has caught KSH's notice... with the "multiple personality" going on with the story.. i love him in everything that he does but I was hoping that he'd take a role that's a bit more cheerful.. but i'd still watch this if this goes through.

I like KSH but not as much as his fangirls are. His acting is okay but not to the point I would go rabid. And what multiple personality? Again? Can we have a diverse kdrama plots in 2015 please? I guess I have to go to cable again (assuming this'll be in one of the big 3) like tvN, OCN etc. they can still prove me wrong but I'm pretty sure I won't be live watching those dramas with almost the same story.

@cassiopeia + pogo: I tried to find some justice in your comments but failed. SayingKsh acting is as bad as idols or he is not even as close to jung so min just show me that your stupidity is no joke ! about acting of other guys mentioned, only knowing that their names have never been put on the same scale with ksh in term of acting and fame in korea and overseas. You guys should have worked in korean media industry to write about that differently.

I watched My Love From the Stars and became a KSH fan, but not because of his looks really, just his acting and chemistry with Jun Ji Hyun really caught my attention. I even watched Moon Embrace the Sun but it didn't strike me as anything special, the main leads lacked chemistry. I'm just hope KSH stars in more drama/movies with JJH in the future, they are so cute together!
