Han Ji-min courted to romance Hyun Bin(s) in Hyde, Jekyll, Me
by girlfriday
I guess the reunion wave is still going strong, because we have another potential costar reunion in the works, this time from film to television: Han Ji-min (Rooftop Prince) is being courted to star alongside Hyun Bin (Secret Garden) in his new SBS split-personality romantic comedy, called Hyde, Jekyll, Me. It’s a 20-episode drama from the PD of 49 Days and Yawang and the writer of Alice in Cheongdam-dong, based on the webtoon Dr. Jekyll Is Mr. Hyde.
The drama stars Hyun Bin as a third-generation chaebol who runs an amusement park called Wonderland. He suffers from a trauma in his childhood that left him with multiple-personality disorder, so there are two totally opposite personalities inside of him — one sweet, kind, and innocent, and the other cold, prickly, and bad. All we know about the heroine so far is that she’ll love both men, and she’ll find herself in a love triangle with his split personalities. I’m still confused as to how that’s supposed to be romantic (it just sounds dysfunctional to me), but then, it’s not like it would be the first time a drama couple blurred the line between romance and dysfunction. Y…ay?
The two actors costarred in the fusion historical film The King’s Wrath (Fatal Encounter) as political rivals — he played King Jeongjo and she was his grandfather Yeongjo’s queen consort, Jeongsun. They actually had great antagonistic chemistry together, so even though it’s a pretty big leap from step-grandmother and enemy to rom-com love interests, I think they’ll make a good romantic pairing.
I don’t know how likely it is that Han Ji-min will sign on; she was courted for a rom-com earlier this year opposite Uhm Tae-woong (his upcoming tvN show Valid Love) but ultimately declined. A project opposite Hyun Bin on SBS is a different story though, so she might be looking at a return to dramaland by early next year.
Hyde, Jekyll, Me will air on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in January.

I WISH! HJW would've been perfect for this, plus it could possibly be a chance to see her playing a sweet and caring character rather than the kick-ass (or pretend kick-ass at least) heroine she's constantly playing these days - SG, K2H, Empress Ki.
Really, I just need a reason to her awesomeness again on small screen. If its with Hyun Bin, that would make my year!

IDK what to think about this pairing; I'm just happy enough about the fact that Hyun Bin is back!
Shallow comment: er, her plastic surgeon did an awful job on her nose; the small and up-turned tip looks even more obviously unnatural and egregious on Koreans/East Asians. Also see: Lee Jong Suk and Park Si Yeon (though they're both still pretty), you'd think with their expertise SK doctors would know better.

Unproven? Yes. Obvious? Yes. IDK who Han Ji Min even is, forget about bias.
A close relative of mine is a plastic surgeon in Singapore and he specializes in rhinoplasty and blepharoplasty for Chinese people and other people of East Asian descent, through him I'm pretty familiar with targeted ideals and the variable outcomes of rhinoplasty. Jobs like HJM's are easy to spot and regarded as a mark of a (usually Western-educated) sub-par surgeon who is so intent on following universal beauty ideals that he forgets to adapt them to the local population, leading to an unnatural appearance for the patient's ethnicity. Special care is taken to avoid that from happening.
I didn't mean to disparage her, only her surgeon. She's still very pretty, of course. Sorry for not making that clear.

I feel like I need to back up my comment (internet comments are serious business, yo!), so here's sketch representing the average nasal and facial profile of Korean women: http://imgur.com/364cHxp (on the right; the middle is a sketch of Korean women rated most attractive; the left is of an average Caucasian woman). HJM's nasal profile resemble the Caucasian's which makes it an obvious suspect (and pretty shoddy work), hence my comment.
Here are the studies the which the image is from: http://archfaci.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=480245 and http://archfaci.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=481010

Seriously? HJM may be a Korean woman, but she is an individual with individual features. Some Koreans may be born with noses that look more "Caucasian" than Eastern Asian. You're basing your whole comment about she suffered at the hands of a bad plastic surgeon because her nose does not conform to the average nasal profile of Korean women (I'm Korean and have seen a million different Korean faces in my life, but I don't even know what that is, by the way) and not real obvious difference from her previous nose?
You know all about plastic surgery and rhinoplasty because your relative is a plastic surgeon?
I would like to recommend that you find better things to occupy your thoughts with for your own mental health. I am not a psychologist but my cousin is.

lol, calm down. It's not that serious. Questioning my mental health because I took out 2 mins to write 3 comments? Seriously?
"Some Koreans may be born with noses that look more “Caucasian” than Eastern Asian."
How does that refute the concept of population averages? I concede it could be HJM is simply aberrant, but I just assumed the likelier explanation given Korean celeb environment.
Who the hell knew Korean plastic surgery (or Han Jin Min) was such a hot-button issue, huh? Perhaps I'm just used to an irreverent, flippant, more American (?) style of discourse, I honestly did not expect this sort of response. Celeb-worship and fan-wars do not appeal to me. Sorry if I caused any hurt feelings. Peace out.
PPasun
October 15, 2014 at 12:52 PM
Celeb-worship? Fan war? Now, I am a HJM fan girl?
Let's just say what I felt reading your comments based on your East Asian nose profile, whatever the hell that is, was exactly the same as what you felt reading my comment about your mental health based on the 3 comments you spent a couple of minutes writing. Whether it was about HJM, some other Korean actress, Chinese actress, a Caucasian or black woman, a latino man, it doesn't matter.
And don't apologize for any hurt feelings. I was just being irreverent and flippant as well, a la the American style.

October 15, 2014 at 2:45 PM
I don't know nor do I care if Han Ji Min has had plastic surgery, but you're generalizing. You can't confine people to a pattern and expect the whole population of a country to look more or less like what's said to be the average face of said country. If you'll look at Han Ji Min's whole face you'll see that her face does not resemble that of the average Korean woman, not just her nose.
And serious question, by your logic, does it mean that Caucasians who have bigger noses got nose jobs to get their nose like that since the average Caucasian has a different kind of nose?

HJM, looks the same to me. My observation in general though, sometimes when people have different hair color, hair style, beautiful attire and added weight loss it does makes a difference. Also looking at younger self to mature self is different as well. Our facial features changes.
I would love HB to be paired up again with HJW (highly doubt it since she's always busy) Son Ye Jin and Song Hye Kyo and Yoon Eun Ye would be a good choice as well. IHO :)

Yup...Han Ji Min looks the same to me. There are quite a few Korean actresses and singers who are well known for their natural beauty with little to no enhancements except for makeup and styling. If I'm not mistaken, I think Han Ji Min is one of them.
Let me find the link. Ah, here it is http://www.soompi.com/2012/03/26/han-ji-mins-past-photos-revealed/
I know that having plastic surgery seems to be considered quite normal in Korea but it's a bit much when we think that they all must go through it in order to look good.

Reunions are never ending in dramaland whereas last year or so, it would've been close to impossible. It's a crazy year in K-ent for sure!
I haven't seen King's Wrath yet, but it all depends on the chemistry. I was secretly hoping for Lee Na-young to be courted. She hasn't done a drama in like 4 years! And I think she'd look good with Hyun Bin. But if this goes through, I'll still be as excited as I was. Hmmmm her drama characters are usually doormats or otherwise disappointing. I think I'd need to hear more about her character before I got excited for her in this role. cause I swear if she's a "cheery meddlesome woman who changes him into a human" I will throw something. Though I can't say anyone else comes to mind that I'd rather have. Mostly because I really don't see this being a rom-com. (My choice for actress would change based on that). I think it would work better as a thriller or fantasy, not necessarily in plot but in tone. Well that's if they flesh out the split personality thing well. This could very well be our usual prickly hero with the heart of gold with a new description, in which case its in line with almost every other rom-com ever. Or...Anyone else see Do No Harm? It be cool if it was a little like that.

But come to think of it, Kim Sam-soon was good because of Kim Suna unni and Hyun Bin. To state honestly, Hyun Bin was the perfect lead for Kim Sam Soon okay (and Kim Suna the perfect KSS), no other could have portrayed that character as well as he did!!!

I really liked RTP and her character was ok but her performance almost seemed superficial and leaking depth. I know the role wasn't super intense but like someone stated it was just off. Maybe she'll be better here, who knows.

I didn't watch it, but listened to the entire movie from start to finish and my assessment is that he's a pretty good actor. Hearing an actor act in a second language with which he's not completely fluent is a good way to evaluate a person's talent, if I may say so!

I've watch a few Hyun Bin movies and dramas but only watched Han Ji-min in Padam Padam--needless to say, she was my least favorite character. Her persistence in that drama was annoying and made her seem so selfish to want to be with Jung Woo Sung even if his family would end up in danger... the strength of the father-son, father-grandmother scenes were so good to the point in contrast whenever she'd come up on the screen, I would need to skip her parts altogether.
So... is she better (less cringe-worthy) in her other roles?

Aside from Padam Padam I've only seen her in a few episodes of Rooftop Prince, so I can't really comment on her acting in that one, but from the little I saw the romance seemed to work better in Rooftop Prince.
Padam Padam was the only drama I saw in which I didn't care about the romance, it just didn't compare to the awesomeness that was the makeshift family and like you I was annoyed when she took him from his family, but that may have to do with the writing.

The best chemistry Hyun Bin had was in the movie Late Autumn with the Chinese actress Tang Wei filmed in Seattle. It was a beautiful movie. The love scenes were so passionate and loviing. She is sn adorable, syt. Actually I thought they were dating. So sad she is already married. Now I am hoping Hyun Bin would pair with YOON EUN HYE. I hope HJM would decline. I really dn not like her. She"s not my cup of tea.

Count me in. Ha Ji Mim is absolutely not my favorite. I think she is only good for Park Yoo Chun.......

Reject please, Hyun Bin deserves a far better actress ....... I vote Yoon Eun Hye. I can feel their chemistry. Sorry just my preference.
