SBS cuts Feel-Good Day, accelerates Modern Farmer
by girlfriday
Aw, it’s sad news for those (admittedly few) of us who are watching the SBS weekend family drama Feel-Good Day; the drama is being cut down from its originally planned 50 episodes to 44 in total. The broadcaster claims that the cut is due to scheduling conflicts during the Asia Games, which are preempting many weekend variety shows and dramas alike. But that feels like only half the story, since we all know full well that if the show were bringing in stellar ratings, the network would find a way to make room for the extra weeks.
Shows — especially those that underperform in the ratings — get slashed all the time, but it’s a harsher blow for Feel-Good Day, which was the first drama that SBS touted as an example of its makjang-free policy. It’s a delightfully angst-free family drama starring Lee Sang-woo and Park Se-young, about a strong single mom who raises her three daughters and even finds romance for herself in middle age. It is, as the title suggests, a feel-good show that often feels more like a warm happy sitcom because of its focus on the everyday mishaps of two households.
But the show premiered to meager 8.8% ratings, and has since dipped down to the 4-5% range (whereas its competitor Jang Bori Is Here over at MBC is steadily topping 30%, for instance). For numbers alone, it’s not hard to see why SBS doesn’t want to keep it on the air for more weeks than planned. And to be fair, it’s much better treatment than a show like JTBC’s Wild Chives and Soybean Soup (aka Jang Gook Becomes Dallae) got when it was slashed in half for failing to reach 1% ratings on cable. But as the first marquee makjang-free drama for SBS, it’s more of a letdown in a larger sense for the future of programming, because already the rumblings are afoot: Why do makjang dramas get extensions while “nice” dramas get the axe? Is this the end of makjang-free dramas?
I suppose the conundrum of popular curse-at-your-screen soapy makjang dramas is an ongoing problem SBS will have to unravel if it’s going to stick to its guns on the matter. On the upside, SBS’s next weekend drama is Modern Farmer, which will be more upbeat, feel-good fare. The 20-episode miniseries stars Lee Hong-ki, Park Min-woo, Lee Shi-un, and Kim Jae-hyun as members of a rock band that get transplanted to the sticks, for fish-out-of-water hijinks.
The show’s first teaser is more like a meta commercial, in which idol rocker Lee Hong-ki is presented with the script for Modern Farmer. He pitches a diva hissy fit that he’s a Big Star and can’t be shooting crappy old-fashioned homestead dramas in the boonies, and then the PDs are all, “Eh, forget him! What, is he the only band leader around? Let’s get Rose Motel!” LOL. If he’s willing to make fun of himself from the get-go, I think I’m going to like him in this drama.
Feel-Good Day now ends October 5 (and we’d BETTER get satisfactory resolutions, or ELSE), and that moves Modern Farmer’s premiere up to October 11.

I'm watching and liking FGD. But I'm not sad to see it cut by 6 eps. In its final stretch, the show is dealing w the romance of the mom and the hotel owner. Nice as that arc is, it doesn't make me care, bcos it has never made known why of all women available to him, he just loves this one.
Wild Chives truly deserved to be cut in half. It got extremely boring, not to mention the adult parts didn't match the childhood ones.
Excited about Modern Farmers--it definitely sounds makjang free.

You guys speak the truth. I too was a fan of Feel-Good Day, and even went around praising it, several times. But, I noticed that I haven't really been watching the recent episodes.
Yes, it's good to have makjang free dramas, but it in this case, I think the mistake was making it 50 episodes. At most it should have been 36 or even 24 episodes. There just isn't enough story to tell about these two families.
The two leads got together really quickly, and for the last 20+ episodes, there isn't enough tension to carry the story. The other family members stories aren't captivating enough.
Lee Sang Woo is sure having some bad luck choosing successful projects. So many of his recent dramas have been mostly misses.
Regarding Wild Chives, well that drama is a great example for how casting can make or break a drama. Once, the drama switched to the adult actors, it just became a really bad drama. Nam Goong Min was miscast in the role, and for that matter, so was the lead. It just didn't have the same feel, and it was no surprise that viewers abandoned the drama in droves.

I am very sad about the cut of Feel Good Day/Glorious Day because I really like the families but more because I loved the concept. I think the show has been slow at times for unknown reasons. By that I mean there is plenty of story (or stories) that could be told, but the pacing of those stories do not work as well as they could. I also think it isn't really as "feel good" as the title suggests; I am often in tears because of the grandmother's story line, for example. However, my real concern is whether or not the network will allow more shows like this to give writers more experience with developing plot arcs without makjang elements.

FGD/GD was good in the beginning, when it was in the process of introducing all the chars. But once LSW & PSY's chars got married, things slow down.
There are certain main plot pts that don't make the most sense, e.g. why grandma has to live apart.
Kim Mi Sook is a beautiful woman, even at her age. When a young man pursued her in A Good Day for the Wind to Blow (2010), I didn't question it. Perhaps it's the big loose tops and messy hair style that she is wearing thru out, she seems to have lesser allure than 4 years ago. I wish they'd give us reason to believe in the hotel owner's determined pursuit. Also, I can't see why a woman of that calibre could have been married to that weasel of a husband and had 3 daughters w him! IMO 44 eps are enough.

And this is what I mean by pacing and stories left untold. They have the basis for really interesting plot and character development, but leave a bunch of that on the table. It would make an interesting story to understand who she was all those years ago that made her fall for and have three children with that low-life and fairly stupid ex-husband but turn into this very smart and determined woman who raised three very kind and capable daughters on her own. If we really got to know her, we would probably also understand better why the uncle falls so hard for her. Another story line that they could have really worked with is the storyline with the step brother. They started going down that road at the first wedding, but then really did not do much or anything with that. I find it frustrating because there is a lot of groundwork for potentially really interesting development that is left hanging in the air.

Well, this not good news for Feel Good Day or the future of makjang-free shows. I have been steadily watching it and like the characters and the two story lines regarding Parkinson's and Dyslexia. Sorry to see that everyday stuff does not seem to be popular. Back to chaebol and candy/cinderella and melo-craziness.

Big disappointment... we loved "Feel Good Day", thought it was the BEST ever drama on this planet. No real evil people except for the annoying 50-ish daughter, and all the other characters are soooo likable. Guess we don't have the same taste as others. Were sooo disappointed when they cut "Wild Chives and Soybean Soup", granted the adults-version weren't as interesting to watch. But Feel Good Day never had a dull moment... always entertaining and always enjoyable to watch and very realistic, except for the annoying 50-ish daughter, is she for real?

Excited to see Lee Hong-Ki in another drama again. Big fan of Bride of the Century.
This year, I'm 2/2 with the premature cancellation (reduced episode count) of weekend dramas JTBC's Wild Chives and Soybean Soup (aka Jang Gook Becomes Dallae) and SBS's Feel-Good Day.
For the most part I've enjoyed Feel-Good Day. Minus the mother Kim Shin-Ae and the writer Moon Hee-Jung's dogged determination to pair Seo In-Woo with the fiancée.
Not surprised after watching episode 40 this past week. I delayed watching episode 41.
Hopefully this isn't the end of makjang-free dramas because there is room for them in kdramaland.

I haven't been watching Feel Good Day, but have been watching Jang Bori Is Here. For weeks upon end I have been entertained by the sociopath Yeon Min-jung (lie, threaten, act the victim, repeat) as she uses and abuses everyone around her, including the titular heroine (who has finally gotten up the nerve to not take it any more, along with her new husband).
And maybe that's one aspect of the appeal of that show...unlike other villains who are just evil, or tortured, or angry/seeking revenge, Min-jung is clearly a sociopath.
But the drama is clearly showing signs of age; the plot is wearing really thin, the scenes mostly look obviously staged, etc.

Min-Jung, or Cruella de MinJung as I like to call her, is one of the best female villains I have seen in years. And her clothes are to die for. I hate her because she is so horrible, but there are times that I admire her because she is so good at being bad. I mean this character has taken lying and deception to new heights and she truly believes that she is justified in everything she does. I hope they keep her mean through the end and do not try some "Two Sisters"-type redemption for her. And this is not just because I think she deserves a LOT of punishment but because I think it would be a cop out for such a great character.

This drama is such an enjoyable watch and Park Se Young and Lee Sang Woo are so adorable together. I've been faithfully watching Glorious Day and, honestly, I'm actually fine with it being cut down. It's at a point where there's really only 1 big reveal left and that can be handled easily in 1 episode. For makjang-free series, it did tend to drag on a little much, IMO. Some scenarios could have been handled better to improve the storytelling.
Jan Bori is actually - FINALLY - good! I love, love, LOVE Mr. Moon Ji Sang. Whenever he interacts with his psychotic ex-girlfriend, it's drama gold! I hope to see him as lead in other dramas soon.

There at least should be a mix of feel good makjang free dramas and the usual formula we see. I hope SBS doesn't give up. Please give us variety!
Anyway I'll definitely be checking out Feel Good Day and maybe Modern Farmer. I really like Lee-Hong Ki after seeing his instagram. A little shallow I know but I like how carefree, fun and open he is with his fans. He doesn't focus on looking as cool and good looking as possible all the time.

Yeah, the makjang-free policy's on shaky ground. In July, they started a new morning drama ("Cheongdamdong Scandal") that still seems to brim with makjang to the max. And it's currently topping the daytime ratings, with 13-15%.
Although, there's a thin sliver of hope in the evening daily "I Only Want to Love," because it's currently beating MBC's "Make a Wish" (MBC is Makjang Broadcasting Channel) in the ratings by a small margin. But, again, both are dumped by KBS2's 20% hit, "Cuckoo Nest," although to be fair, it's not a direct competitor (SBS/MBC soaps air at 7:20-8:00; KBS2 at 7:50-8:30).
As for "Modern Farmer":
"The show’s first teaser is more like a meta commercial, in which idol rocker Lee Hong-ki is presented with the script for Modern Farmer. He pitches a diva hissy fit that he’s a Big Star and can’t be shooting crappy old-fashioned homestead dramas in the boonies..."
I almost thought this meant LHK's character will be doing a drama-within-the-drama that's a parody of KBS's "Hometown Over the Hill." Haha.

This drama started out beautifully, without the makjang. It was warm, sane truly depicting the struggle of a single mother.
However, whether it was due to ratings or whatever, the story had gotten bogged down with the character of Sin Ae. Every episodes was revolving around this unappealing, whiny, bratty character that was supposed to be an adult daughter, wife and mother.
At this point, a cut in episodes will just mean we have to see less of that character. Hurray!
I had such great expectations for this drama. It was a welcome and refreshing change.

I am sad to read this. They had me with Park Se-Young and then I learn that Jung Man-sik gets a romantic role, I'm completely sold. Plus, Kim Hyung-kyu (Inwoo) has been a real discovery to me, one to look out for.
Since I'm able, I watch both Jang Bori and Glorious Day and for me, they are a perfect compliments: eye-rolling, entertaining makjang and pleasant, almost soothing comedy-drama.
On the other hand, if it really were about preemptions, better they do this and wrap up tightly than plod along like dear, sweet High School Love On, which at this rate will finally wrap up sometime in 2016.

I can live with the drama being cut but that's a little soon, given the games this week that means they will wrap the show up in 3 episodes.
A lt of the week end drama's would fare better with less episodes. So when doing this type maybe making it 32 episodes would allow it to do better in the ratings.

After watching Feel Good Day for 43 weeks, SBS did it a disservice by cutting the episodes down and condensing the story. I watch Korean programming because I respect the stories and the culture. Don't allow programming to become too much like "America" - disrespectful of their elders, or of each other for that matter.
Does anyone know where I can get the entire series (with english subtitles) so I can get the entire series the way it was meant to be presented? Thank you.
