Korean remake of Liar Game lines up its cast of liars and swindlers
by javabeans
Here’s an interesting possible lineup: Lee Sang-yoon (Goddess of Fire Jung-yi), Kim So-eun (Horse Healer), and Shin Sung-rok (You From Another Star) are all currently in talks to star in tvN’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday drama Liar Game.
Liar Game is a remake of a Japanese drama of the same name, itself an adaptation of a manga, and is set around a literal game based on lying: The heroine is sent a mysterious note inviting her to join the Liar Game and given a huge amount of money, and she is instructed to somehow trick the other player out of their sum. When she falls victim to the other player instead, her former teacher, she loses her money and, in desperation, asks a consummate swindler to help her win the game. The series comes from PD Kim Hong-sun (of Warrior Baek Dong-soo and OCN’s Hero) and writer Yoo Yong-jae (Time Between Dog and Wolf), all of which seem like good credits to have when prepping a psychological thriller drama.
Kim So-eun sounds like the perfect choice to play a young woman whose honesty makes her an easy mark (with a spine underneath the niceness, I hope?). Lee Sang-yoon’s character is a former psychology professor at Seoul National University (which is Lee’s own alma mater, by the way, which he graduated from with a physics degree), but he’s also an ex-con swindler. The psychology degree must be one of his assets in reading the other people, as the show-within-the-show’s format is described as a “psychological survival game”—so, lots of persuasion, deception, and mindfuckery.
Shin Sung-rok will play the Liar Game’s inscrutable host and analyst who comes into conflict with hero Lee Sang-yoon, and if we know anything about Shin Sung-rok, it’s that he gives good villain. It’s also gratifying to see his career finally picking up steam in the wake of You From Another Star, because he’s flown under the radar for so long.
Liar Game will be the Monday-Tuesday drama to follow My Secret Hotel, which means that the drama initially slotted there (Uhm Tae-woong’s Valid Love, from the My Name Is Kim Sam-soon scriptwriter) will be pushed back to later in the year. Liar Game premieres in October.

I hope they stick close to the original formula and don't put romance in there. I only saw the Liar Game Reborn film, which was okay – mostly because I think it's the sort of thing that works much better as a multi-episode drama rather than a two hour film.
The cast of the original is really good, Matsuda Shota and (in the dorama) Toda Erika. I hope they don't make Kim So-eun's character honest by ... ummm 'aegyo naivety'. Matsuda Shota was genius and dark, which might be right up Shin Sung-rok's alley, given the dark that he was channeling in You From Another Star.

dont think this drama will add romance in its plot, since it only has 10 eps ( instead of 16)

Wow... liar game. One of my fave doramas. The cast here are perfect. Shota playing a very dark character and Toda was naive but you can see how her character started to become a bit more wiser because of shota.
I remember there was a little hint of romance in one of the season, been so long since I watched it so I forgot what eps it was. But it was there.
I hope they stick to the original plot though.

They had nice chemistry so even when she acts so dumb you wanna shoot her head out you enjoy how he will clean up her mess and even use her naivety to their advantage. She shows some spine in the 2nd season though. The dorama did hint to some romance but never confirmed. The main attraction of the show were the games though and she was at the heart of it. Its just that after a while you realize that the games wouldnt have been what they were without her character. I woulsn't mind the romance as a side story like very light. Anyways i don't usually watch remakes but since its 10 episodes only i wonder how it'll be. I'm curious!

being a person who read the manga, watch the drama, and watched the movie, I'd say she has to be the ever-so-naive kinda girl or it would break the whole show. I mean, she's the character that keeps pushing "there's hope in humanity" "we can trust people" and all that horseshit, and it end she won. She stick to her true trusting-self and she totally owns it. The dude won't even bat an eye to help if only she's like every other liar:lying.
We can't hope the character to be less-stupid (by our own standard, yunno being tainted with lies and experience lying ourselves. Sorry, House said "Everybody lies".Soo, yeah, we all lie. lol)
Wanting her to "less naive" is like asking Candy to be less-Candylike

Yeah, except SSR isn't playing Akiyama, the other dude is. I'd be more interested if it was SSK playing him.
Plus, it looks like they are white-washing Akiyama's character. In the manga/jdrama, Nao catches up with him AS HE'S BEING RELEASED FROM JAIL. While it does say he's an ex-con, it makes it sound like that's a thing of the distant past. Plus, a professor??? I don't remember him being anything that respectable....
Yeah, I think I'll just re-watch Liar Game. No one beats Mastuda Shota, anyways. That's the reason why I couldn't get on the Kim Bum train until way after BOF - Kim Bum might've been popular for his BOF character, but Shota did it better :D

Yeah, got confused about the actors, but would prefer SSK in the Akiyama role too.
I wish Matsuda Shota would make better drama/film choices though. When he picks good stuff, he's amazing, but he's done too many detective serials (or doctor serials). I mean, he's got those roles down, but he's capable of so much more.
Ryuhei's project choices are much better, although I think both have heaps of talent (runs in the family, obviously). I would like them both in something together. In something seriously dark.

my favorite part about his character (who happens to be one of my favorite characters EVER - I adore my geniuses) was how dark he was. The way he had been raised to believe in people like nao but had his hope in humanity crushed was awesome and THE WAY HE LAUGHED QUIETLY EVERY TIME HE WON- I loved that show.

Honestly, early liar game was fantastic. The variety show The Genius was based on it so I'm not surprised tvn picked it up. Shota and Erika Toda were perfect for their roles but I cant see this cast working with the exception of maybe So Eun. Hopefully they stick to the dorama because the changes don't look that promising (can't see any of the dealers having too big a role without changing the game).

Ok this is funny. The first episode gave me a suspicion of what is its exactly about and true enough i was right. I have went to one of the pitches made by the money-sucking companies because the teacher in me was so curious. True enough, they couldnt answer my questions and I knew for sure its a fraud. Heck, i am watching this for Akiyama's sexy smirks too as he kicks those guys' asses.

I hope they mainly stick with the original formula, except make the girl less stupid and naive. I hated Nao so much! She would get conned over and over again, sometimes by the same person, in every single episode. I seriously wanted to smack her.
I hope they give this girl in the new drama some common sense, and make her smarter.

Sorry. It's just that Japanese Liar Game was one of my favorites.
I don't understand. Can't they create their own Original dramas? There was Nodame and now this... I am not concerned whether it will be a good remake or not. I am disappointed with this copying "fashion" as a whole.

well, there was also City Hunter, which was based on the manga but was still great. And the Japanese adaptations of kdramas like The Devil and You're Beautiful weren't great either.
But yeah, I wish they picked more original concepts, I like some recent kdramas that are more experimental with stories like 3 Musketeers etc. Though I'm happy that Kim So-eun can get a lead role.

Not sure bout Lee Sang Yoon though cuz I haven't see him in anything. But Kim So Eun and Shin Sung Rok are just great. Besides its in TvN, so maybe they’ll be able to push boundaries a little. I'm..... not too happy about this? Liar Game is one of my top favorite dramas of all time and the manga is great as well, so when I heard about this I was really skeptical. I'm ok with kim so-eun because she's adorable and I know she can pull of Nao's character but Lee Sang yoon as Akiyama? And the fact that they're making him older because Akiyama was never a professor..... I just...
I'm worried tbh. I'll still watch it when it airs to give my final opinion but as of now I'm not thrilled.

In Liar Game: Reborn he was a professor. But a young one. Though this had to do with the fact that they changed the female actress... at least that's what I found out when I researched the film when I reviewed it (http://alualuna.wordpress.com/2012/08/08/review-raia-gemu-saisei/).

yea he was a professor in Reborn, but they are already making him a former professor before he even gets into the liar game. In liar game, he was a student that became a swindler and then it's about 3 years later, that ends up helping nao when she's entangled in liar game. Liar Game takes place before reborn so the fact from the get go they are making him older, is not a fact I'm liking.

Well, it's kinda haunting that he's that young, but so smart and SO cynical. It's like he has NO trust in anyone, and that's one of the reasons he does so well in Liar Game - but also one of the reasons he and Nao end up being a good match. He's makes her think, not just trust, and she makes him consider that some people do have a good side...
In a way, having them the same age really helps show how different they are - it's not just that "oh, she's young" or "He's older, he knows better" ...and I'm really sorry that this show is losing that dynamic.

I had a hard time stomaching Liar Game: Reborn because I refuse to believe there is another girl on this planet as naive and trusting in humanity as much as Nao. What I hate in all the Liar Games is how Nao and Yu relentlessly question Akiyama's strategies to the point where they turn against him and do their own thing, only to fail. He has a proven track record that his strategies are foolproof, so why are you questioning genius? That and I can't accept Tabe Mikako starring opposite of Shota. If Erika was unavailable, then they should have nixed the second movie.

Is this going to be based on the manga or the jdrama? Because the manga is one of my all-time favorites, but I was disappointed in the jdrama. It could be awesome if done right, but the Liar Game host is the antagonist? That's different from the manga, so it has me worried. On the other hand, the manga isn't actually finished, so I guess they have to change some things in order to provide resolution... I don't know whether to be happy about this news or not!
By the way, for those who are curious about the heroine, at the beginning she is described as "foolishly honest," sort of a innocent, naive type who is in way above her head, but she goes through a lot of character development and is able to hold her own later on. She retains her belief in humanity and desire to help others while learning how to be a bit more canny and play the game. I see the message of her character in the manga being that you don't have to be stupid to be a good person. Unfortunately, this is totally absent in the jdrama where her "purity" (read "naivety to the point of idiocy") is lauded as a virtue, and she never moves past it. So... she could be either awesome or terrible depending on which direction they choose to take with her.

Cool. more psychological thriller! I haven't actually watched the jdrama but the manga is a good read. The games are well thought through and the tricks are usually very clever.
Nao (Kim So-Eun's character) is naive and overly trusting but a lot more perceptive than she lets on. She becomes stronger without abandoning her philosophies and is a necessary foil to Akiyama and the rest of them. I hope that she won't be written off as the cutesy dumb type in this adaptation.
Anyway. I like the cast, so far. Haven't really seen Lee Sang-Yoon in anything but I like Kim So-Eun and Shin Sung-Rok. I hope all goes well.

Kim So Eun would make a great Nao. Feel like Lee Sang-yoon is too old for Akiyama's role though. And when was he ever a university prof?
I'm really hoping they stick closer to the manga than the j-dorama. Less camp, more mind games and game theory. Though sadly, there's like zero chance they'll keep Fukanaga trans like the manga, even if this is cable.

I don't think this will be a hindrance since most participants (Nam Goong Min, Hong Jong Hyun, and Park Se Young who's in Glory Days during the majority of her stint on the show) in WGM are currently starring in dramas too. Even Song Jae Rim himself is currently cast in a drama. If I'm not mistaken, this drama will have only 10 episodes? So I guess she'll have a lot of time on her hands once it wraps up.

Can't they just recast Shota as Akiyama in the Korean remake and have subs for his lines in Korean? I love Kim So Eun, but Jo Bo Ah would make a more believable Nao-chan. Bright-eyed innocence. Which character is Shin Sung Rok supposed to play? The host as in the dealer Leronira?

My fondest memory of Liar Game is that it basically taught me everything I would ever need to know about counting Japanese Yen.
Although if I watched too many episodes in a row, all the zeroes from the huuuuge amounts of money they were flinging around would start getting mixed up in my head.
Also, I would lose track of who's winning and losing about 10 times an episode. The complexity of the games was exciting :D

please let this lineup be finalized... please let this lineup be finalized... please let this lineup be finalized... please let this lineup be finalized...
Believe it or not, I actually miss seeing Shin Sung Rok be all creepy and spine-tinglingly evil; I miss Kim So Eun's cuteness and bubbly personality on my screen; And---- DANG!!!!----- I just miss seeing Lee Sang Yoon (and his dimples <3 ) on my screen, period <3 *swoooooooon*

I'm not familiar with the Liar Game manga or Jdrama, so I'll go into this with zero knowledge. It sounds intriguing and, given that I'm not all that familiar with any of the actors, with no illusions (good or bad) about their acting. Looking forward to more information!

I loved Japanese Liar Game. So different and so dark, it really helped me discover my own tastes. I also loved that there was barely any focus on romance. Reading this, I don't have a good feeling inside...please don't let it focus on romance, or let romance be the focus, and please no love triangles either...but yeah, I'll stick to original unless they can do as well as the Japanese drama.

Say whatttt!?!?!?
Liar Game was one of my FAV jdramas!! So amazingly awesome, clever and well thought out - can't believe even this one is going under the kdrama copy ringer...geesesh.
No one does Nao and Shinichi's characters better than Erika Toda and Matsuda Shoda - like no one. I can't even.

Hmm, they tweaked the story a little. The host has a central part? Now I need to see this
I like the j-drama version (even if it has many flaws) and planned to read the manga since a long time ago, it's perfect time to read and compare the k-drama :D

Would have preferred Shin Sung Rok in Akiyama's role but his casting as a dark game creator is good, too. Can't argue with that one at all. Not seeing it with Lee Sang Yoon but that's only because he only seems to play the nice guy types. Who knows how he'll be in this but I don't see it right now.
I don't think I've ever seen Kim So Eun in anything but everyone seems to be excited for her. Looks alone she seems like a good fit. Nao was really naive but even she got pretty slick later on while not being completely jaded. I don't want the character to change.
I loved Liar Game. The two seasons and the concluding movie (I didn't see Reborn) -- I breezed through them all. It'd be cool to see how they do it up in Korea.

I hope they didn't put any unnecessary romance to the plot. Other than that, this looks promising enough~^^

Don't see how this story can fit into a kdrama. The whacky premise and all-too-naïve Nao-chan, are common in anime/manga-adaptions for jdramas and worked well as a jdrama. Kdramas? Can't see it...

ANOTHER GEM-IN-THE-MAKING BY TVN!!!
Attention Big 3 (KBS, SBS, MBC) I was waiting for u guys to make LIAR GAME into your adaptation. I'm a big fan of this J-dorama. TVN is doing a pretty nice job nowadays, and I'm not surprised if this pulls off! :-)
Gosh, and the cast, I have no problems! Bring it on!

I tried to watch the Jdrama, but it didn't appeal to me.
Since this remake is from tvN, I have big hopes that it'll turn out good. Maybe this will be the rare event where I didn't like the original but ended up liking the remake.

Liar Game Jdorama was one of the few first Jdorama I watched and nothing can beat Matsuda Shota and Erika Toda together. It's definitely not appealing to the whole spectrum of audience but the way the drama was filmed made us concentrate a lot more on plots and twists. I personally love those smartass kind of drama so Liar Game clicked for me.
Korean remake of Nodame Cantabile, Fated to Love You and now Liar Game...all these news are quite shocking (although FTLY was really good). And I support Shin Sung Rok as Akiyama more than Lee Sang Yoon really. That vibe just screams Akiyama to me. Lee Sang Yoon looks like a good boy; he enrolled in the wrong drama.

These Pro-JDrama people who glorify everything while conveniently ignoring the blatant flaws in their beloved J-Dramas are really getting annoying. If remakes bother you that much, then simply don't watch. Complaining about it and putting the originals on an unreachable pedestal is not only extremely annoying, but won't stop the K-Drama producers from making them.

IKR? They act like everything that is their favorite a masterpiece made by God that no one should touch. But hey, the show hasn't even started yet, at least throw your negativity once you see what you are worried about people. Though I hope that the show proves all the worries wrong. There is nothing wrong with giving the PD, Scriptwriter, and the crew of this drama a chance. Common!

K-drama producers remaking so many j-dramas is equally annoying, not to mention their track record in this area is kinda abysmal.

YES PLEASE to Kim So Eun!!!
But the other two......... sigh. IDK I suppose nothing is going to beat matsuda shota in the role for me. Hope they come up with a better lead. Not dark and mysterious enough to me.
I don't really get why people r against the remake and "hope they don't ruin it". Even if they do a bad job, how are they going to RUIN the original? The original is still there... just forget about the bad remake and move on. I don't mind other places giving a shot at trying to remake it... Whether they fail or succeed is okay. Liar Game is a good production, that's why people want to even try bringing a version to their country.

omg can't believe there is so much love for liar game and shota <3 I enjoyed the drama when I watched it but I wasn't sure how it fared with other people
I'm a bit ambivalent about the remake. I don't want to get too excited b/c so far IMO there hasn't been a kdrama version that is better than its jdrama counterpart but I'll give it a chance. I kinda wish that SSR was akiyami though, he can play dark well. and I feel his age/look matches shota's more
