Cantabile Tomorrow’s light, sentimental first teaser

The first teaser’s out for Cantabile Tomorrow, and I’m liking what I see. It’s not overtly funny, but has a light, sensitive touch (inasmuch as we can judge in thirty seconds), and the tone, cinematography, and use of music—Mendelssohn’s 4th—is really working for me.

In the trailer, Joo-won says in voice-over: “The moment he waved his baton, I knew. Just as classical music filled the air, in that place where the classical melody remained in my ear. And in that place, I met her.”

He means Shim Eun-kyung, of course, who plays the Nae-il (“tomorrow”) of the drama’s title. In the story, his character starts out primarily a pianist, although he harbors close-held dreams of conducting. But he’s also proficient at the violin as well (which should make his violinist buddy, played by Go Kyung-pyo, simultaneously annoyed and impressed, I’m pretty sure), and we can see Joo-won practicing with the instrument in the photos below.

(I’ll admit that it’s a huge pet peeve of mine when instruments are played completely wrongly onscreen, especially when the characters are supposedly virtuosos, but I know that there are obviously going to be limitations that you can’t get around. And acting talent trumps the ability to actually play in real life, for sure. I just hope the faking is done as well as possible, with seamless edits.)

In previous projects, production house Group 8 has displayed a tendency to go for comic-book-like moods, often characterized by a cute tone or broad comedy (see: Boys Over Flowers, Tamra the Island, Playful Kiss, and Pretty Man—though I found Goong to be an exception, being moodier in a nice way), but I think the feel displayed in the preview fits much better for this story.

Also, I’m relieved that they’re keeping the hero’s narration, since the voice-overs provided a window into his insights that were pretty important; he’s so taciturn on the outside that it was a really nice way to get inside his head, to hear his thought processes and realizations and moments of wonder. It also helps take us along on his journey of discovery, because despite appearances our perfect hero does quite a bit of maturing in the series. Fingers, commence crossing! Oh, let’s be real, they’ve been crossed for months.

Cantabile Tomorrow premieres on October 13 on KBS.

Ik trying not to get my hopes up I'm really trying but they are making this difficult ...... And question are they just going to film it in Korea and then the Paris to like the Jdrama ? Or no ?

I'm also asking the same thing. Hoping they would incorporate the things that happened in the Paris arc as there was more development between the main leads that the Jdrama didn't incorporated.

Well Japan was an island and Korea is a peninsula so connected to land.

But the only way to travel by land to another country from South Korea is.....through NORTH Korea!

In regards to actors playing instruments, I always wondered if it was done right in Secret Love Affair. Does anyone know?

Funny you should mention your pet peeve being instruments played wrongly by the actors:

In August my friend watched the Japanese version on my recommendation and I was curious about her reaction since she graduated from a musical school (she went there for years) playing piano. And the first thing she complained about was poor 'piano playing' acting of the Japanese Nodame. She told me she could tell when they cut to her double just by looking at the correct position of her (the double's) hands on the keyboard. She was appalled (I'm not exaggerating) at the posture of Nodame actress at the piano, because players are taught to sit with straight back, not hunched like that (it seemed weird to me too, to tell the truth). It was an interesting perspective on this drama.

In moments like these I'm happy I don't know anything about playing any instruments and don't have to fear that spotting some inaccuracy will spoil my viewing. But still, it would be nice if the actors actually trained a little with their instruments to make it more convincing (but I doubt they had enough prep time?).

Can't wait for this drama!

It's always a disadvantage to know too much about something being faked onscreen, you always know when the actors do it wrong.

I remember watching Black Swan and cringing at Natalie Portman's stiff postures and laboured closeup dancing (it's supposed to look effortless if you are a competent ballerina like her character was supposed to be). And then I winced some more at Mila Kunis doing ballet rehearsals with loose hair. And that film won Oscars for the acting......kdrama fans are not the only ones who can be fooled.

Required fields are marked *

I didn't know that about Black Swan, but then I'm no expert on ballet. Interesting to know.

Still it's difficult to demand from actors the level of experience that people learning certain skills acquire through many years of learning and training. Actors are hired to convey the emotional depth of their characters, not because of their skills most of the time (the only recent exception to this rule that comes to my mind is Wang Ji-won's ballerina character from Korean Fated to Love You - from what I've read the actress does ballet in real life). They only receive basic training as to fool the lay audience into believing that they know what they're doing and that's that. But it's nice to know that actors at least tried to learn something.

I'm reminded of Benedict Cumberbatch from BBC's Sherlock - he complained that he hadn't had enough time to learn to hold and play the violin properly, so he must look like he doesn't know what he's doing on screen. For me it makes not difference as I can't tell either way, but it's nice to know he cares so much about this - if I were a violin player I would regard this as mitigating circumstances in my judgement of his (or any other actor's) ineptness.

Yeah one can't expect too much, but they really hyped how much ballet training the actors did in preparation for the role so when they do that, I will judge, haha . The only bits where the ballet looked as it is supposed to were in full body shots with the dance double, who was a professional ballerina.

but I can forgive not being great at a skill if it is not central to the role like the ballet in Black Swan or the music in Nodame.

I get where you're coming from and I agree wholeheartedly :) I remember there was some controversy surrounding the whole ballet training hype that Portman was getting (as in she did not deserve it), even after her Oscar win, but can't quite recall what it was exactly...

actors can´t be supermen. well, unless they are playing Superman, but I don´t think Superman did ballet or played violin. even if he kind of wore a ballet costume... what I am saying is, only James Bond can do EVERYTHING. I remember when Behind the Scenes of Sweeney Todd we all found out Johnny Depp can´t even waltz and he is terrible at dancing in general, so they put him on this turning wheel to make it look like a waltz. that was the most hilarious thing I ever heard, but then, it might be some weird joke of Tim Burton. Maybe he fooled us. I dunno.
some of the hardest things to learn though: ballroom dancing postures, archery, AND THAT you dont need a steering wheel for modern ships, you have all those screens. yet we see a brave captain at the wheel...and captains did not even do that first mate is supposed to be at the wheel. sometimes it is the producers and directors that make the actor look amateur at what he is doing.

Yeah, I did 13 years of Ballet - I avoid dance movies, unless the actors are also dancers. You want to REALLY cringe? Watch Goong. OMG the pain. That is the worst display of onscreen ballet I've ever seen...her hands...her feet...her BACK...

Yes, I've seen somewhere that she is a ballerina in real-life. And even though I know nothing about ballet, after seeing her dance in episode 1 of Fated to Love You (when I didn't know anything about her background) I thought that she must be a professional, because her ballet dancing looked... well... professional.

0

Ugh yes I saw Goong. I tried not to judge since the ballerina part was not important to the drama the way musical ability is to Nodame so I forgave that, it's not like Black Swan where the heroine's ballerina status and ballet are the whole premise of the film.

If I'm not mistaken, as it's been a very long while since I read the manga, Nodame's posture at the piano was always (?) hunched. Maybe the actress was doing it on purpose? Cmiiw

Yes, my impression was that it was part of her character- she is suppossed to be a weird "improper" performer so the incorrect posture helped convey that visually.

0

Required fields are marked *

Nodame in all versions (anime, manga, and live action) hunches when she is playing. It could be because she never had proper training until she went to Paris. It could be because that is how Nodame has always played, in the zone and not minding anything but the music. Then again, I did find some of the playing in the drama as "half-believable" however I know nothing about playing instruments so I let it pass and it didn't affect my love for the series.

I do agree that they should have some training on how to play the instruments. I remember Park Shin Hye learned how to play the gayageum for her role in Heartstrings.

Anyway, best of luck to the cast and the production team! Fighting!! ^^

Required fields are marked *

well tbf re nodame's posture. she WASNT properly trained, that was kinda the point. she was a natural genius at it. which is why chiaki seeing a diamond in the very rough, took her under his wing. unless she means nodame still played like that post being trained and doing concert halls. its been so long since i watched that i dont remember if it changed but yeah at the beginning it was said again and again taht she played sloppily and sat wrong and was just a mess yet created such a beautiful pure sound besides. she just needed training to be truly great so to speak. its the charm of the drama. esp since nodame wasnt a homely girl next door who was poor but a non neurotypical eccentric with a childlike persona and also very KY haha.

I understand it's part of Nodame's story arc and an integral part of her character, I have no problem with that.

My friend on the other hand - I understand where she was coming from - everyone of us has a field/hobby they're obsessed about and will cringe very hard when it is misrepresented/distorted on screen no matter the context. It's like - you know it makes sense in the story, but it still annoys you to no end. For example - I'm a proper linguistic nutcase, I speak several languages and I'm obsessed with correct use of every aspect of the languages I know. When actors are supposed to speak a foreign language (that I know/am learning) well and come off terrible - I hit the roof (e. g. Lee Min Ho in "Heirs" - it was painful). Even when they're not supposed to be fluent - I hit the roof nonetheless. It is my little pet peeve, so I get when the "irrational" wrath comes from.

But just out of curiosity, id like to know from those of you who do play instruments...what does it seem like with Joo Won playing the violin in those few stills. . does he look convincing... I remember when Jang Nara played a virtuosos with the violin [though one with a mind of a six year old} and she trained for something like three month it could even have been six, and the best she could put out was what her trainer called genius..as in she never heard anyone make such a noise with a violin before ie it was so bad, so the best anyone could do in the short time is try to get the finger placement at lest looking real I think that all anyone could expect from an actor with nil experiance playing one.

Now that the teaser is out, I am glad that it looks like this Korean adaptation of Nodame Cantabile will not be copying the Japanese version blindly.
It would be boring if they try to copy it verbatim. Plus, some things are so uniquely Japanese. I didn't like the over the top wackiness and slapstick humor which was just too much in NC. It worked in manga or anime but taken so literally in live adaptation didn't work for me. Then there are scenes like the Kotatsu ones which were hilarious but I have no idea how the Koreans are going to duplicate it. I really hope they can.
I know fans are saying no to an emphasis on romance but I felt it was lacking in the Japanese version. Although Ueno and Tamaki looked good together, I never bought into how their feelings progressed and felt their love for one another. *spoiler ahead* When Chiaki finally hugged Nodame, I was like "huh?" In the aspect of romance, I find the Japanese too understated. The Koreans on the other hand can go over the top. But when they are good, they are really good.
My wish for this remake is that Cantabile Tomorrow can have a winning combination of both hilarious and quiet moments, both light and emotionally rich tones. The story has much potential. A live adaptation should overcome the limitations of a manga/anime and give us different but awesome experience.

Guys.... this drama wasn't made for the Nodame Cantabile fans of manga and it certainly wasn't made for the J-dorama fans. It's a adaption made for the mainstream audience. They are not targeting a niche market. No, KBS wants to target this drama towards the masses.

Sadly... the masses don't care how Nodame was portrayed in the Japanese version nor do they care if there are changes to the story. This is how you market a drama. As long it's entertaining and it's a good story than the masses don't care.
