Sea Fog to stir box office waters this week

After a year of waiting, Sea Fog, Yoochun’s big screen debut alongside veteran Kim Yoon-seok, is finally being released next week. Produced by hit director Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, The Host) and directed by first-timer Shim Sung-bo, the movie has generated a lot of buzz, not only because it is based on a popular 2007 theatrical production of the same name, but because the play itself was based on a real-life event that occurred near the coastal city of Yeosu in 2001.

A crew of six set off on their commercial vessel hoping to bring back a bounty of fish, but when they are disappointed by their catch, they attempt to make up for lost profits by taking on a group of Korean-Chinese stowaways seeking to illegally immigrate to Korea. When they’re hit with an intense fog, things don’t go as planned, and soon the crew members must evade the maritime police while fighting to keep those onboard alive.

Kim Yoon-seok (Hwayi, The Thieves) plays the captain with questionable morals. The boat is his home and his life, and in the trailer we get to see a glimpse of how effectively Kim pulled off the character, whose speech and every mannerism is reflective of a life at sea.

In addition, the transformation of flower boy Yoochun (Three Days, I Miss You) into a shabby shipmate is so effective, he is hardly detectable among the crew. Although there had been doubts that his performance would stand up to that of his veteran counterpart’s, from what we see in the clip, he seems to have pulled off the Yeosu accent and his easygoing seafarer role convincingly.

Of Sea Fog’s scenes, 70–80% of were shot in the ocean, and the real-life effects of rain, wind and powerful waves add an additional air of authenticity to the film. All signs point to an emotionally gripping two hours; get ready to hold on to the edges of your seats. Sea Fog hits theaters August 13.

This isn't the sort of movie I normally see, but I really like Kim Sang-ho's acting...I might have to keep an eye out for it. :)

I hope we'll get this for the London Film Festival – not sure what the chance is for that, only counting on Hong Sang-soo's latest – but if not there, I'm sure the London Korean Film festival will screen since they like to being the big films that have been creating a buzz (unless they can't get screening rights).

It's not my usual sort of film, but the buzz about it has been interesting enough for me to want to check it out.

Hi Aula, when is the London Korean Film Festival? I didn't even know it existed? It would be amazing if all the great Korean films are shown.

I think the festival it's in 6th year now? It's normally just right after the London Film Festival – late October / early November.... the autumn is (happy) hell for us film festival goers! :-)

Last year they screened about 15 films I would guess? Usually a good mix of some blockbusters, some indies, some kids' films. Mostly recent stuff.

Are you aware of the Korean Film Nights at the Korean Cultural Centre? Those are fortnightly and actually free.

There's also the Asian Movies Meetup, which occasionally will have a Korean film (more often Japanese or Hong Kong though). They mostly do "surprise films" – i.e. films that haven't yet been released and that they can only screen if they don't announce the name publicly.

Yoochun's not bad, I've never seen his idol group but he's good enough to legitimately be called an actor based on what I saw of him in I Miss You/Three Days (he improved a lot since SKKS).

And he's definitely good enough that I don't cringe when I hear he's cast in something, this looks good.

And I have to wait 3 to 4 months to see Sea Fog. So frustrating.

The wait sucks. I really want to see Roaring Currents, which apparently is breaking all kinds of records in Korea, but I don't live in a major city that is showing it in theaters. Le sigh.

"Roaring Currents" release date in the US is August 15th. Here is a list of theatres from Han Cinema.

I'm very fortunate to live close to one (about 8mins away).
This is one of my most anticipating K-movie of the year so I can not wait till Friday.

I'm a big fan of Korean history and I wont miss this for the world. They couldn't have picked a more perfect actor like Choi Min-sik to play Korea's legendary hero Admiral Lee Soon-Shin. Ryu Seung-ryong is always a treat especially when playing the foreign villain.

I'm not surprise that "RC" is tearing up Korea's box-office records. I'm not Korean but Admiral Lee earned his place in the history books as one of the best admirals in the world.

Looking forward to watching Sea Fog too. I'll watch anything with Kim Yoon-seok.

I am a JYJ fangirl and I am anxiously waiting for this movie WITH english subs. However, when I first saw Yoochun in this get up I actually got a mini heart attack. I was like, "dang he looks like a......fisherman...but thats okay I guess he is playing one.....but still my flower ahjushi Yooch!" Oh my heart. He looks absolutely like a troll in this haircut ? He better payback with some sort of rom com where he looks like the man candy he is ? oh wait.......MS ? we are stuck with fisherman Yooch image for 2 years.

Hahaha sorry for my inner monologue guys, Yoochun makes me weak at the knees ?

I hope this movie does well both at the box office and critically. I am not too worried as it does have a stellar cast!

All the best to Sea fog's team! Fighting!

As a fan I actually love that he did not care about his image. That way he can actually become the character.

I don't have much respect for those fangirls who were complaining that he was looking chubby for this movie.

Chubby or not, we can't deny the fact that Yoochun is one talented actor.

I knew he'd go a long way when I predicted in 2006 (when I first saw their Banjun Dramas) that among the five of them, he'd be the most successful when it comes to acting.

I'm so proud of Yoochun, and I hope the movie does well in the box office. It's the best gift he could receive before entering the military.

“Park Yuchun went through the biggest physical transformation. Kim Yunseok sunbaenim and myself look like seaman once we put on dirty clothes. He (Yuchun) had to put in a lot of effort and I was surprised he even gained weight on purpose. After that, I watched Three Days and was shocked, ‘Is that Park Yuchun?’ He is really good at acting. Different from his peers. Everyone is full of praise for his quiet and calm acting Even when shooting in the cold and his feet are freezing, he would not ask for heater.” – Actor Yoo Seungmok [Ahjunews]

Oh, so he gained weight on purpose..wow! Gotta love this CHUNFACE no matter how round his face or how ahjussi his style

And for me Yoo Seung Mok did an unbelievable transformation too…He looks soooo different in Sea Fog!
Way to go Sea Fog team..Good luck!

Hi,
Why is it rated 19+? Is it because of the violence? (I am assuming...) Or because of the themes explored? This movie doesn't have graphic (very suggestive) sensual scenes, does it? It does not seem to be the direction the movie was headed... (I was just wondering...).

In addition to the violence, there is some nudity and sex, thus the 19+ rating.

Against Roaring Currents Sea Fog probably won't be breaking any box office records but I hope it's received well critically. It would be great for him to leave with a good image as an actor before enlisting.

Good year for CJeS I would say. Choi Min Sik is probably raking in the money for Roaring Currents, and JYJ will be touring. Oh and Dracula must have brought in a lot too.

Yoochun left the flower boy image behind a long time ago. Only knew him when I watched SKKS in 2012 and subsequently reading about TVQX and JYJ.

Personally I prefer his low voice, especially in singing ballads. Have a listen at his rendition of this Japanese song, Greatest Love :

Enjoy !

I just saw "The Admiral: Roaring Currents" and it was pretty good. You can really tell all these sea movies took a looot of hard work. I'm really excited for this one too, and I hope all their super hard work pays off.
I'm so happy for Yoochun, I think this is an excellent start to his acting career in the movie industry. His seniors in the movie are all great, so I'm looking forward to it.

It's wonderful that Sea Fog (a.k.a. Haemu) is also going to have a North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. It's in the Gala Presentations section, which means that the director and some of the cast will probably attend and/or participate in a Q&A after the initial screening. I saw "The Thieves" in a similar TIFF premiere a few years ago and it was quite an experience!
