You’re All Surrounded: Episode 16

It’s almost a hug! That’s practically a hug, right? The things a girl’s gotta do to keep the bromance alive around here. We make some big strides today—we finally get a few key reveals in the overarching story, but as usual the more enjoyable parts of the episode are the small moments between our crabby Papa Bear and his grumpiest little cub. At some point, shouldn’t you just give in to the fact that the universe wants you to love each other? Don’t fight the universe, man.

EPISODE 16: “Things that can’t be hidden”

Pan-seok and Dae-gu present the one-of-a-kind pendant to Madam Yoo and confront her with the accusation head-on: She dropped it eleven years ago at a crime scene in Masan, which makes her the prime suspect in Mom’s murder.

She can’t hide her shock, but recovers quickly and tells them it isn’t hers. But they’ve done their homework and already know that it was custom-made for her alone. She scoffs, and then returns with a pendant—an identical one. Well, so much for one-of-a-kind.

She renders them speechless and accuses them of shoving a cheap imitation at her. Dae-gu stares at the two pendants side by side, completely floored by the unexpected turn. Pan-seok asks her to come down to the station with the second pendant for examination, which she naturally denies. The boys leave the house more confused than ever.

As he looks at their pendant again, Dae-gu puts his photographic memory to use and discovers that there are slight variations between the two—small, but enough to convince him that they aren’t perfectly identical. It means one of them is a fake for sure.

Madam Yoo’s husband comes home and wonders why she’s in such a panic. She just snaps at him, wondering when he started caring about her, and continues to call (Daddy, I’m guessing) repeatedly.

Pan-seok and Dae-gu share what they’ve found with the rest of the team, and they’re all shocked to hear that Birkin Bitch might actually have killed Dae-gu’s mom. The only thing they know for sure is that this is the pendant from the crime scene eleven years ago because Soo-sun has had it all this time.

It leaves open the possibility that Madam Yoo had a replica made to serve as an alibi once she realized she lost it, though it can’t be proven until they can examine the two pendants together.

Pan-seok says it’ll be faster to approach the case differently at this point, and decides that they’ll focus their energy on whether or not Madam Yoo could have been at the crime scene and if she actually has a clear motive for murder. Without that, the pendant is useless anyway.

He and Dae-gu will head to Masan tomorrow to look into the day of the murder and Madam Yoo’s whereabouts, while Eung-do takes Gook and Soo-sun to look into past relationships. Tae-il will focus on where the replica pendant might have been made. Pan-seok encourages the team and says the case could’ve remained unsolved, but this pendant has changed things, and they should approach the case believing they’ll find all the answers.

Soo-sun spends the whole meeting sneaking glances at Dae-gu sheepishly, feeling terrible about keeping such an important piece of evidence hidden in a drawer for so many years. Back at their desks, she cautiously scooches over to his side, but he coldly sticks his safe-distance ruler out and tells her to talk from there.

She asks if he’s having a hard time, and he answers curtly that she already knows, so why is she asking? She apologizes for being such a dummy about the pendant, and he only confirms that she’s as dumb as he said she was. Aw, Dae-gu Dae-gu, why have you returned to your cold fish ways? She hangs her head, not knowing what else to say.

Assemblyman Yoo comes home to the unfortunate news that the pendant that went missing eleven years ago has now resurfaced. He’s even more flabbergasted when Madam Yoo shows him the replica she had made, which he apparently never knew about.

She’s feeling smug about being prepared with an alibi, but he points out the idiocy of making a replica of a one-of-a-kind necklace, which is basically like acknowledging your guilt.

She’s utterly confident that no one could tell the difference between the two; Daddy’s not so sure. In any case, he tells her he’ll take care of it, and then calls to check in on Combat Boots.

Meanwhile, Chief Kang gets to her desk that day and finds a mystery envelope waiting for her. She opens it to find a picture of the pendant dated recently, and a typed message reading: “I have the pendant that you hid.” It instructs her to come to the Han River for a meeting, and for once, she looks panicked.

As soon as Tae-il wakes up the next morning, Pan-seok is waiting at the kitchen table and demands breakfast. Tae-il puts cereal down, which displeases him: “What are these, cookie crumbs for breakfast?”

Tae-il scowls but goes to start making breakfast anyway. He notices Pan-seok’s phone ringing with a call from Sa-kyung (named kka-kkoongie, a term of endearment like she’s a tiny baby) and it stings doubly that she’s calling Pan-seok, and he’s too absorbed in his work to even hear his phone ring.

He retaliates by asking Pan-seok’s permission to get Sa-kyung’s help on the jewelry angle. Pan-seok tries to play it cool by giving him permission, but then starts taking his petty jealousy out on inanimate objects on the table.

The rest of the boys get up, and Pan-seok says Foil is here. They stare groggily, and Pan-seok explains that Foil (eun-bak-ji) is them: Eun Dae-gu, Park Tae-il, and Ji Gook. And then he cracks up at his own joke, hee.

Pan-seok and Dae-gu head straight to Masan first thing, and Pan-seok asks about Dae-gu’s family, surprising him with all the background knowledge he has from searching for him all these years.

Dae-gu confirms that his father passed away before he was born, and Pan-seok doesn’t pry any further since he can tell it’s a sensitive issue. Dae-gu pretends to sleep for the rest of the way, leaving Pan-seok to fidget uncomfortably in silence.

They go door-to-door around the old neighborhood, and some of the residents remember him when Dae-gu introduces himself as Kim Ji-yong. They show a picture of Madam Yoo to see if anyone recognizes her, but no one does.

Tae-il and Sa-kyung spend the day going from jeweler to jeweler, trying to find someone skilled enough to make a replica of a detailed piece. Sa-kyung sighs when she gets a message from Pan-seok saying he can’t make their date, and Tae-il asks if he’s postponing yet again. She tells him to mind his own beeswax.

Soo-sun and Gook go looking for an old colleague of Mom’s at a clinic, but deflate when they learn that the friend is on a work trip to Jeju.

Pan-seok and Dae-gu take an ice cream break at the local store, and when the shopkeeper arrives, Dae-gu is shocked that it’s still the same grandma. Grandma recognizes him immediately and clasps his hands, so pleased that he’s alive and well.

She asks who the other man is: “Are you Yongie’s father?” They both reel, and Pan-seok rants that Grandma needs to get her eyes checked, insisting that he still gets mistaken for a bachelor everywhere he goes. Hee.

Grandma says she worried so much when Ji-yong disappeared, and admits that she always blamed herself for what happened to his mom, and that she should’ve gone to the police that day. They ask what she means, and she tells them she came by with kimchi the day that Mom died.

She never made it inside though, because she saw a scary man lurking in front, and it scared her enough that she turned around. She apologizes for not doing anything then, because she never imagined what would happen.

Pan-seok shows her photos to see if she recognizes any of the men, and she doesn’t until he gets to Pig’s Feet Oh Joon-soo—she says that’s the guy she saw that day. They thank her and run off to catch him.

On their way back, Tae-il texts Pan-seok to thank him for the opportunity to take Sa-kyung out to dinner. Lol, are you angling for a beating? I actually think he’s trying to play Cupid in his own misguided way, though you couldn’t tell that from his methods.

Then Dae-gu gets a text from Soo-sun asking how he’s doing, which puts a smile on his face. But then she follows it up by saying that she and Gook are out to dinner, and Gook is busy peeling a crab for her. He even spoon-feeds her. She reminds Dae-gu to eat, but all he sees is that she’s eating with another man, and fumes.

Both guys sit in the car stewing in their jealousy, and Dae-gu gripes to Pan-seok, “Why can’t women eat alone?” Pan-seok says that’s not the only problem: “It’s the men who don’t know fair play that are the problem!”

He mutters that you put in all this effort to raise them and then they attack whether or not there’s already a goalkeeper. It’s not a sensical metaphor, but the adorable part is that Dae-gu agrees like he’s saying some deep truth, and encourages him to drive faster.

Pan-seok: “Do you have your seatbelt on, Pet Rabbit?” Pfffft. Dae-gu asks curiously, “Pet Rabbit?” Pan-seok waves it off like it’s meaningless, but can’t help ribbing him one more time, and calls him Soo-sun’s pet rabbit and cackles in glee.

They go straight to Pig’s Feet and ask him what he saw the day of Mom’s murder. At first he hesitates, but in the end he admits that he was there (presumably to keep an eye on Mom and prevent her from testifying in court that day). He recognizes Madam Yoo, and says he saw her leaving the house.

Dae-gu heads out and takes a deep breath, trying to process the first real break he’s gotten in this case in eleven years. Pan-seok joins him, and Dae-gu actually gives him the credit—it’s not exactly a thank-you, but it’s close.

Pan-seok throws an arm over his shoulder, feeling pretty great. But that’s still a little too much affection for Dae-gu and he slinks away, and Pan-seok grouses at the rejection. So cute.

The rest of the team cheers when they get the news, calling it a miracle that they found an eyewitness so many years later. After delivering the happy news, Eung-do watches Chief Kang walk by and it weighs on him.

We see that Pan-seok shared his suspicions with Eung-do a few days ago, and neither of them wanted to believe that she’d be the Detective Seo they’re looking for. Her name doesn’t match, and most of all, they don’t want to believe that she of all people could be corrupt.

Eung-do insists that she must’ve just forgotten to pass on the message about Soo-sun’s witness statement, and Pan-seok agrees that that’s what he hopes, but if she did it on purpose, it’s highly likely that she’s the one who stole the pendant out of evidence too. He says they’ll find out soon enough.

Soo-sun stays behind until Dae-gu returns to the precinct, and stops to check her hair when she sees him walk in. She congratulates him on the break in the case, but he just walks away while she’s talking.

She follows him into the team room and asks if he’s mad at her, and he grunts, “Yes.” She sighs, guessing that it’s because of the pendant, and he calls her a dummy all over again. She blinks, confused, and asks why he’s mad at her then.

Dae-gu: “Why am I not your type?!” Haha. He asks why he’s not her ideal type, and if the kiss was really all business for her. That’s the last thing she was expecting, and she wonders how that could be important to him right now when the case is finally getting somewhere.

But he counters, “Yes, it IS important! Ever since you told me I’m not your type, I feel like life has lost all meaning!” Pffft, dramatic much? She turns to go, but he wants an answer, and whirls her around by the wrist.

She loses her balance and he catches her fall, and then doesn’t let her go until she answers the question: “So, who is it? Who’s your ideal type?” She starts hesitantly: “Your friend… Kim Ji-yong.”

He finally lets her go and she scurries out of the room. When the shock wears off, he grins broadly.

Assemblyman Yoo confirms that Boots has only had one visit with Pan-seok, and has rejected all other visitations while in prison. He calls someone and gives the green light to proceed with The Plan. I hope the plan involves murder and mayhem, because watching you sit in a chair is getting awfully dull.

Chief Kang checks her watch nervously, waiting for the dreaded meeting with the person who found the pendant. Chief Toad runs in with big news: a special judiciary committee has been formed to revisit the bill for joint police investigative authority. Assemblyman Yoo is finally keeping up his end of the bargain.

Pan-seok heads to the river and waits and waits; finally enough time passes that he’s convinced Chief Kang isn’t the culprit, and he sighs in relief. But just as he’s ready to leave, she appears.

He walks up calling her Detective Seo, and she turns around to see Pan-seok approach with a stricken expression on his face. He asks how it could be her, how she could have taken the pendant, told Boots where Ji-yong was hiding, and then become Ji-yong’s benefactor after all that. “How could YOU… be Detective Seo?!”

We fade into a flashback twenty-seven years ago in Ulsan, where two young female police officers face a dismissive prosecutor who refuses to help them prosecute their case. It’s a young Chief Kang with her then partner, Seo Kyung-eun.

They’re trying to get justice for the rape of a nineteen-year-old girl, but the prosecutor basically says she was asking for it. Both the detectives get fired up at the scumbag, but it’s Detective Seo who dares to outright accuse him of taking dirty money from the defendants.

He treats them like bugs under his shoe, clearly believing that he’s superior for being male and a prosecutor, and even slaps them for talking back and accusing him of corruption. He warns them that they’ll find out just what happens to cops who think they can talk to prosecutors that way.

The officers get reprimanded by the police commissioner for adding a suit against the prosecutor for assault, and it’s Police Chief Yoo Moon-bae (now Assemblyman Yoo) who comes to their defense.

Later he tells them they have no choice but to drop the whole case, and Detective Seo asks what happens to the victim when they promised her they’d fight for her and seek justice. She refuses to back down, but it’s Detective Kang who relents in the end, and she signs the waiver to drop the case.

Dectective Seo can’t believe she caved when they promised to go together till the end. They have to face the victim’s mother, who blames them for giving up and going back on their word. It’s all too much for the idealistic Detective Seo, and in the end she leaves her badge and jumps out the window, committing suicide.

Detective Kang buries her partner, and asks Chief Yoo why they have no power. She urges him to do something about it, so that the police force has the autonomy to pursue a case without being under the thumb of corrupt prosecutors. His eyes fill with tears, and at least here in this moment, he seems sincere and honorable.

She asks him to call her Detective Seo from now on, so that she never forgets her partner and this guilt that she feels.

Back in the present, she finishes the story and tells Pan-seok that investigative autonomy has been her only goal for twenty-seven years, and all that matters is that it’s about to become a reality. She swears she’ll confess everything and name all the people involved once the bill passes.

He can’t believe the words coming out of her mouth, and asks what happens if the bill doesn’t pass—hasn’t she been singing the same tune for the past eleven years? But she just counters that he has no evidence to contradict her, so it’s moot.

His jaw drops: “Were you always this kind of person?” It’s heartbreaking—he’s watching his role model and leader crumble before his eyes, and all she can do is ask for the pendant.

Back at the station, Dae-gu and Tae-il get ready to do another round of jeweler searches when Madam Yoo’s son Ki-jae shows up. He calls Dae-gu hyung and asks to be taken out to lunch, and Dae-gu obviously finds his behavior puzzling.

Ki-jae pouts when Dae-gu refuses to be nice to him, and wonders why he isn’t more appreciative of the villa hint in the bag case. It’s news to Dae-gu that the hint was intentional, which Ki-jae laughs at. He gets upset that Dae-gu won’t be his friend, and takes back all the nice things he said about him. Dae-gu watches him go, wondering what just happened. What is this kid’s deal?

After exhausting all the potential jewelers on their list, Dae-gu and Tae-il wonder if they need to broaden their search to foreign craftsmen. Dae-gu realizes he left his phone behind and turns around, leaving Tae-il to head to the car alone. Uh… nothing good ever happens when someone gets left alone in a parking lot.

Sure enough, two thugs are watching their every move, and as soon as Tae-il is alone, they rush him. They beat him down, and though he puts up a good fight, they’re too strong to overtake and manage to pry the pendant out of his hand.

They leave him on the ground, but he fearlessly fights back and chases them down to reclaim the pendant. This time, the henchman takes out a knife and stabs him in the gut. Yaaaaack.

Even as he’s lying on the ground bleeding from the stab wound, he claws at their ankles to try and stop them from getting away. Aw, Tae-il.

Dae-gu comes back to find Tae-il in a heap on the ground, and he runs over in a panic. Tae-il says they got the pendant, and irrationally keeps telling Dae-gu that they have to leave now to go after them. Dae-gu screams at him to forget the damn pendant, and cries out for help.

He follows Tae-il all the way to the surgical ward, and Tae-il has enough presence of mind to smile at Dae-gu’s concern.

Dae-gu waits out in the hallway with his head buried in his hands, and then the team arrives, flooding him with questions. He says they’re both okay, but his voice shakes as he says Tae-il was stabbed because of the pendant.

Gook collapses in relief and worry over “our Tae-il,” and Eung-do tries to get Dae-gu to rest. But he just gets fired up as he decides that Madam Yoo is behind this, and storms out of the hospital. Soo-sun chases after him, and they tell her to stop him from doing anything stupid.

She jumps out in front of him and tells him not to go, not now like this when he’s sure to do something rash. He argues that he can’t just sit here when they’re coming after him, when Tae-il was stabbed because of him. He refuses to let her get away with it. “If anyone should’ve been stabbed, it’s me!”

He won’t stop, so Soo-sun just throws her arms around him and hugs him. “It’s not your fault.” She tells him that it would’ve happened no matter who it was or what the evidence was: “Because we’re detectives and that’s our work. It’s not because of you.” She asks him to be patient until they can put her in handcuffs the right way. She holds on tight and pats him on the back, and he gives in and lets her comfort him.

At the same time, Madam Yoo waits by the river until a henchman delivers the pendant to her directly. We finally get the flashback to the day of Mom’s murder that confirms that Madam Yoo was the first visitor that day.

We don’t get to hear what they argue about, but in the heat of the moment, Madam Yoo grabs a vase and knocks Mom down. There’s blood everywhere and she drops the vase in terror, and in her haste to leave, she doesn’t notice that her necklace comes undone on the front stoop. Back in the present, she looks down at the pendant in her hand and smiles, satisfied that she’s in the clear.

And outside the hospital, Dae-gu cries on Soo-sun’s shoulder.

COMMENTS

I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone that Madam Yoo killed Mom, which in and of itself is neither here nor there; the moment of discovery is a shame since there were initial elements to Mom’s murder case that were interesting early on in the series, and they had potential to build suspense into the mystery. But that fell by the wayside long ago, and at this point I’m happier to just get the answers so that we can focus on our characters’ pursuit of justice. That’s far more appealing (not to mention better executed here), because at the end of the day this show is more about the dogged painstaking groundwork done by cops to honor a victim, not about Mom’s specific case. It’s what Chief Kang’s backstory reinforces, though she’s an example of how easily power corrupts, and not even in the traditional way, but how one compromise for the sake of the greater good turns into two, three, and suddenly you’ve spent eleven years convincing yourself that unethical conduct is justified by your well-meaning intent.

Chief Kang remains one of my favorite characters because she’s tragic and pure in her motivations—I fully believe she has the best interest of the police force in mind, even as she rationalizes her terrible choices. I like that her backstory is rooted in her first harsh lesson as a young cop, and her first encounter with true corruption. It’s understandable that she’d never be the kind of cop that Pan-seok is, because she watched her partner give up her life over her principles. It’s no wonder she convinced herself that being so rigid and honorable is pointless—it changes nothing, and the dirty prosecutors keep getting their palms greased and justice continues to serve the highest bidder. How sad that she’s become the very thing she hated. The irony is that she doesn’t see it because she’s convinced herself that intent is all that matters. And who knows, in the end she may be right that it was worth it, but she’ll have sold her soul to get there.

Now that we’ve confirmed what happened, I’m more excited for the battle of wits ahead. The bigger the odds stacked against our team, the better; despite being setbacks, I actually like that they’re coming after Tae-il with knives and that Madam Yoo has the pendant. I was honestly getting bored with the lack of danger, but at least now we’ve amped up the stakes and turned the focus not on Who killed Mom? but How do we make Mom’s killer pay for her crimes? Our good guys are limited by the constraints of the system, but that’s what makes the fight appealing—the bigger the gap between our underdogs and those in power, the more meaningful their victory.

I love the way Dae-gu and Pan-seok’s sameness creeps up on them the more time they spend together. Now they’re dressing alike and being mistaken for father and son (I wanted to hug that grandma), and suffering in their romances in the same way. It cracks me up that they seem to lack the same intuition when it comes to women, and how Pan-seok thinks he’s super clever when teasing Dae-gu about being Soo-sun’s rabbit, when he’s just as clueless in his own relationship. And Dae-gu continues to make me happy with his bluntness, which makes up for the romance taking so long to develop. He just says how he feels, which is utterly refreshing. Soo-sun is a little more frustrating in that respect, but she makes up for it by stepping up when it matters—she brings out the best in Dae-gu and doesn’t let him give up on the good fight for a moment of revenge, and she returns the comfort he gave her when she felt like no one was on her side. What a long way he’s come from being all alone in the world.

Ahnnnnnn Dwaeeeeeeee!!
Our Tae II….. :((((

Tae II must be ok, he must! my heart almost couldn’t take it, seeing him beaten up and stabbed. sobs.

Finally things are much clearer, Chief Kang’s idea of “greater good”, was the driving force behind her evil deeds. Now we can understand how she can be both sincerely good and evil.

I’m glad the drama has made the progress it did, though I cannot wait for our legend and rookies to wipe the smirk off Ms Yoo.

I find it interesting, in ep15, the scene where they were all together having beer, and reminiscing the time they met till now, when squad chief asks them “do you remember”, it was as if we as audience grew together with them. Learning their mistakes, and life lessons.

You’re all surrounded, what a journey. I’m eager to see the wrap up, yet even now at ep16, I don’t want it to end.

chief kang, omg, i still wanna think that she found daegu in orphanage was coincidence. she's an awesome woman, and her life's just tangled.

our taeirie.... TT.TT you're too awesome to be stabbed.... and he cant even call his parents. i want some family reunion in next ep...

a lot predicts if the actual argue was because madam yoo's husband is daegu's father, and she came to confront mom, but her bitchy side came out and killed mom.

because it explains things:
1. the masan grandma who thinks jiyong's father is still alive.
2. kijae's fanboying scenes to daegu. omomomo if the theory is true, they are step-brothers. so cute>.<

Chief Kang really made me angry this episode because she is kind of doing what those people did 27 years ago. She said she wanted that bill passed to get passed the corrupt prosecutors, but she herself became corrupt for that goal. I mean she is a real hypocrite.

As for that bag lady, prison is not punishment enough

"prison is not punishment enough" SECONDED!!! , i just wish i could bitch-slap that annoying smirk off her face..

As for Chief Kang, i agree with you, she's a real hypocrite. Deluding herself that her reason is enough to justify all that she's done so far, she might be a good person but corrupt is corrupt whether it's for the good of something.

My heart is going to break for Eun Dae-gu when he finds out that the one person he trusted for a long time, was knee-deep in the whole thing.

But like I said before, I am glad the writers are maintaining her greyness. I can totally empathize with her.

Also,IMO the affection she has for Dae Gu is completely real. Her sense of righteousness might not be the best (although I doubt whether she realizes it), but her basic human emotions toward people are exactly what she shows to them. Whether it is being a mentor to Pan Seok or a guardian to Dae Gu, I don't think she was faking it purely out of her so called goals.

And I don't think she realizes that she is being a hypocrite either. In her mind, the destination is more important the path.

Don't die Tae-il! That was totally surprising to me that it happened. Other than the other birth secret that will probably end up happening I'm glad the "mystery" is solve and now they can get to the good part of making evil lady suffer in jail.

Dae Gu is such a teenager sometimes. I cackled when he said he lost the will to live because Soo Sun rejected him. I'm seriously glad the romance is moving forward. He's grown so much as a character, now his friends and even his relationship are as important as finding out the truth about his mother.

Dae Gu and Pan Seok are so great together. When are you finally going to give him and give the man a hug Dae Gu??

I hope they don't go there since everyone has called birth secrets about 6 episodes ago. But the kid is cute and clearly isn't as stupid as he seems. I like it that he looks up to Dae-gu as inspiration rather than the pathetic excuse of a human being.

But I am yet to figure out the kids deal or his exact purpose... Maybe he'll screw over his mom which would've been sweeter if they showed him to be close to her. That would've been a comprehensive slap on the face.

Yea, he's really good! I think he has much more screen presence here than he had in YFAS, but it could be because his role is much more amusing rather than cardboard cutout.

I wonder if he knows Dae Gu is his half brother. When he came to the police station and found dae gu, he looked up and his phone and said 'You dun look that alike after all.' I dun get it. Is he comparing DG with someone else? His father? Or himself?

There is sth Off about Bag Lady's every interaction with her father--Her yelling at him, accusing him of having done a bad job of covering her (their) tracks 11 years ago, her walking away while they are talking....none of it is like a daughter's behavior towards a father who has been helping her evade a murder charge! Korean society is supposed to be very hierarchical, isn't it? She behaves more like a demanding wife.

SK is great. So is PS. I'm just not so sure that being married to a detective dedicated to his work is a formula for a happy marriage. DG is gonna turn out to be exactly the same kind of detective, isn't he?

Wait a min. Chief Kang has done all those horrible criminal things for the bad guys on a BELIEF that the evil Assemblyman will introduce a bill to give the police department independence from the Judiciary? What's to guarantee that he will? Even if he will, who's to say that it'll be passed? Is she naive or stupid? Urg, Both!

I don't actually think Dae-gu is as dedicated as Pan-seok is. Dae-gu likes to rely on his photographic memory and IQ skills; most of the time he hates to grind and hard work.
Pan-seok's direct protege or exact-copy kid would be Soo-sun, I think. Which is why Dae-gu and Soo-sun work to well. They have what each other lacks and shield each other's weaknesses.

Sa-kyung; I'm not sure what her purpose is in this story other than smiling at Pan-seok's cuteness or bringing out his petty jealous side. Which is cute and all, but... maybe pointless? I still wish they did more for her character.

Yep. Dae Gu is more likely to be the one in SK's shoes if he marries Soo Sun. His life will continue to lose all meaning while she's off doing cases and he wants attention.

Perhaps sa-kyung's role is to bring out the romance side of pan-seok.

Cha Seung Won's past few dramas like city hall and greatest love was all romance comedy, centred around him. Which was all good... but i've never liked him more than i like him here.

Though he does carry the masculinity to play full romance drama, i thought the story here brought out much more in him.

Even though he has to act as an old punk as compared to the rookies, and pitiful, when we see his story regarding how his mistakes haunt him.........

he has never been more charming!

I swear, I am going to start petitioning that we get a 3-season crime investigation series just with DaeguJiYong & Pan Seok.

hey are you SURE he is not your dad.....
even if they get some other DNA match I am still suspicious, ha

you seriously didn´t just do that to Tae Il, cmon. are they gonna kill the character off, really?
nooo.

and another thing, to korean men: dramas show some of you as total brutes. even if it is on screen, the abuse of women, them being slapped, humiliated, undermined, their demands ignored, in unacceptable. really disturbing and sick.

I discovered the bag lady looks a bit like my youngest aunt. yikes.

and what I mean by unacceptable is also that it is how can the men themselves accept being shown as brutes. do something about it and protest.
on the other hand, I do realize there are guys who treat women badly but slapping is so barbaric

I was shocked by the physical violence directed at women when I first started watching Korean dramas. I am still shocked, but I happened to re-watch one of my favorite movies from the '30's, It Happened One Night with Clark Gable (which, by the way is essentially a Korean drama) and was reminded that one of the very first scenes is of the female lead getting slapped across the face by her father. We have had to work hard in the US to make violence against women unacceptable. We haven't done very well making violence in and of itself unacceptable. So, yes, let's support societies around the globe in reducing violence and maintain vigilance within our own.

Now that DG mom's 1st killer is confirmed to be Assemblyman's daughter, the only question is... what is Madam Yoo's relation to DG mom? What is her motive to killer her?

This would be my favorite episode yet! So much progress in the so called mystery and even better in the romance. This drama can be so good when it wants to be... I just hope it gets better for the last four episodes remaining.

Firstly, Park Tae-il, I had my heart of my throat because of you! Damn, I didn't realize I was in tears because I legitimately feared something will happen to him. So right now, I'm just glad he's alright. The characters and interactions in this drama have been so genuine and the writer has really done well to flesh them out in a way that's both compelling and endearing. I didn't even realize how much I liked Tae-il until there was a fear of losing him.

Pan-seok is just hilarious. I just loved both the car scenes! Dae-gu can be so difficult to get along with because he's always so quiet around Pan-seok (or anyone in general other than Soo-sun and the guys). But I love how much effort the latter is willing to take in order to form a sort-of relationship with Dae-gu. It has to be pride and ego, and maybe even a little embarrassment; I can tell Dae-gu kinda likes Pan-seok's ways but tries way to hard to be the cool stone guy. We'll see how long you last, buddy!

Chief Kang is officially my favorite character of the year, hands down. I know I've been singing the same song for the past few comments but she really is such a well-written and realistic character. She's a reflection of the world today and how sometimes, you just have to stain yourself to achieve the greater-good. Her back story is so tragic and as is her present situation. I want her so bad to achieve what she's worked so hard for, and in the end, I hope she can get forgiveness from Dae-gu because I truly believe she'd that. Her sincerity towards him is real and I can't imagine how disappointed that kid will be once he finds out the truth. I know it won't ever be the same with them, but I hope they can get past this and that Dae-gu can understand that she has protected him over the years. I want a happy ending for her as much as the team; I probably won't get it, but I reeeeealy want it.

I loved the move on with the romance. It's just fantastic how frank and straightforward Dae-gu is. It's been forever since I've seen a guy just admit he likes someone so openly. There's really no fanfare with him, it is what it is. He isn't worried about looking cool or unaffected; its always great to see a character just lay it all there. I wish Soo-sun was similar because it would've made them such a no-nonsense couple. But she isn't taking forever to admit and isn't quite hiding it herself so I'm actually quite pleased.

I may not be very pleased with the mystery, but the characters and their interactions almost always make up for it. I hope the case will wrap up next week so the finale week can be dedicated to our team.

I agree with every single thing you said! About the romance, about the characters being more important than the cases, about Pan Seok, about everything!

And with Chief Kang, I hope it's a bitter-sweet ending. I mean she has to pay for her wrong-doings of course but at the same time like you said, I hope doesn't lose the people she cares for.

Ah...Dae Gu, you really is still the boy from 11 years ago. You're mad at Soo Sun because she said you're not her type, not because of the pendant? Haha...But it's okay, now you know that her type is your 'friend' Ji Yong.

Talking about the pendant, can't Dae Gu and Pan Seok go to the designer again to confirm the pendant? He's still in Korea, right? Dae Gu knows the difference between the two pendants thanks to his photographic memory, doesn't he? Maybe I missed something because I haven't watched it with sub, yet.

I love that Dae Gu said he lost the will to live after being rejected, it SO goes back to his character in the very beginning being all dramatic while defending the noona he had a crush on.

I wonder if Dae Gu is related to that kid, if they are brothers, uncle/nephew, switched at birth, what. And that kids seems super lonely is basically bursting at the seams to tell him something. I think *fingers crossed* there's more to this story than it seems so far.

It's probably more about money than love. Her father was just a policeman before, so they obviously moved up in the world over the years. Dae Gu is the oldest son of the family and in kdramas that mean he's the one who get all the inheritance.

i still sort of doubt it was an affair. I think DG's mom was with him first and he only later married evil lady. Not sure I'm too impressed by dad though. He seems more close with his evil mother than his father.

Couldn't agree more on your choice of favorite character, girlfriday. Chief Kang's character is so elaborate and complex; I could even symphatize with her at some point. Also, the story uncovers itself with all its expected outcomes, no surprises here, and the only thing that keeps us from turning off the video player is each actor's ability in entertaining us, and there's only 4 eps to go *sigh* But, in a nutshell, this drama is pretty daebak compared to cheesy weesy lovey dovey drama out there (no names, please).
Aaaand, honestly, I first watched this drama because of Ahn Jae Hyun, but it turns out I fall in luurve with Lee Seung Gi (his acting skill has skyrocketed since Brilliant Legacy, and I don't have the slightest crush on him back then). Thank you, YAAS!

I am so confused! I am sorry for being so dense but could someone help me out?

1. The Pendant:
- There is the pendant that Soo Sun found in the High School and kept.
- There is the pendant that Chief Kang swiped from the evidence box and handed off to an unseen person.
- There is the pendant that Crazy Lady made to replace the lost pendant.
It looks like there are 3 pendants. What did I miss?

2. I thought we saw Boots kill Mom so how could Crazy Lady also kill Mom?

Required fields are marked *

The three pendants are the same pendant: Ji-yong found it outside his house and turned it in as evidence, where Chief Kang swiped it. She handed it off to boots, who dropped it at the school where Soo-sun found it.

I think that Boots was sent to finish the job after Birkin Bitch thought she killed mom, and when he found out that she was still alive he finished the job.

Required fields are marked *

Relax, houstontwin. Let's go back for a bit...
1. When the crazy biatch found out she lost her one-of-a kind pendant, she called Bootman to retrieve it, but once he got to Ji Young's house, he couldn't find it (and he killed Ji Young's mom instead, eeeek). Then, Chief Kang, who teamed up with the devil at the moment, overheared Pan Seok talking to his chief about the pendant on Ji Young's school uniform which was inside the evidence box, and Chief Kang stole the pendant and gave it to an unseen person aka Bootsman. Then, Bootsman continued his unfinished task of killing Ji Young, missed his chance, and lost the pendant on the science lab. A few moments later, Soo Sun found it on the floor among shreds of glasses.
Crazy biatch made a fake one to save herself from explaining her alibi if the pendant was being traced back to her, but this never happened 11 years ago, because the pendant was on Soo Sun's hand.
2. Crazy biatch hit Mom on the head first, and then she fell unconscious, not dead yet. When she was conscious again, Bootsman strangled her for good. That creeps.

Required fields are marked *

The Pendant:

The pendant Soo Sun found is the same as the one Chief Kang handed over to Combat Boots (who is that unseen person you mentioned).

Combat Boots took the pendant and went to the school to kill Ji Yong but dropped it when he got attacked with acid by Ji Yong. Soo Sun found the pendant in the science laboratory later on and kept it.

So there are only 2 pendants since Crazy Lady got the fake one made.

Murder:

There are 2 murderers. The events (with regards to the murder) are as follows:

1) Crazy Lady visits Ji Yong's mother for a reason we do not know yet.

2) Crazy Lady hits Ji Yong's mother with a vase and almost kills her. Terrified, she leaves and on her way out she drops her pendant.

3) Combat Boots arrives to get the pendant (Assemblyman Yoo hired him, I think) but fails to get it. He finds Ji Yong's mother still alive and finishes the job.

Hence Murderer 1 is Crazy Lady and Murderer 2 is Combat Boots.

Hope that helps! =]

1. There are only 2 pendants. There's the original pendant that Bag Lady lost, Daegu found and gave to the cops, Chief Kang stole from evidence and gave to Combat Boots who then lost it while chasing after Daegu at the school eventually getting found and kept by Soo Sun for the next 11 years. Bag Lady had a replica made of the pendant to throw off the cops.

2. Bag lady hit her with a vase but did not kill her. Combat Boots finished the job by strangling her. I am assuming that Combat Boots neglected to tell Bag lady that the mom was still alive when he got there.

This is probably my favourite episode so far, because everything gets revealed (well, almost) and there's just so much cute throughout the episode that I kept smiling especially at Dae-gu and Pan-seok's interactions <3 I kinda wished this happened at, like 6 episodes ago so that we get more of them for the next 10 episodes, and also to speed up the villainy and plot.

I must admit, the reason why I keep watching this show is because of the characters. Sometimes I wish the story is more tightly-written in terms of the overarching mystery and the big villain.

There are some things I don't understand regarding Chief Kang's behaviour. To me, it seems at odds with her character.

I can understand her deep seated desire for the police force to have independent rights to make arrests and her 'willingness' to support Yoo, so that he can push for those rights. I can accept her taking the pendant out and passing it to Boots as it would incriminate Mdm Yoo and because she's Assemblyman Yoo's daughter, he would have to step down and hence, her dream would be even harder to achieve. But to tell Boots that Jiyoung was hiding in the school is so out of character, cause that would get him killed. (That would make her as bad as the rapists and corrupt prosecutors.) How could she condone such an act?

THEN, when Boots was unsuccessful in killing JY, she actually became Jiyoung's sponsor. (How she found him, is anyone's guess, cos PS searched for him too. I can only guess that she found him first, and then to hide his real identity as JY himself wanted, she helped him get a new identity.) I described her behaviour as odd, almost bipolar because she genuinely looks like she cares for JY. In all her encounters with him, I see only concern and care, especially at the games day. When DG ran and overtook his competitor, the way she praised him was like a proud mother. She even warned him earlier about a possible attack. Yet she had sent him to an almost grave that night.

Other puzzling details are:
1) how did Boots know which orphanage to go to? JY had changed his identity. One can only assume that Chief Kang told him where he was.
2) And why did he go there? So that he would need to know what grown up JY looks like? If so, he can just ask Kang for a recent photo.
3) If it's to kill DG/JY, why? Yoo didn't even know that JY was alive. Why even come back to Korea when he could have waited a little more longer, as the statue of limitations was going to be over.

One more puzzling detail, why, if you are trying to keep the pendant a secret from your Captain--do you go all over the internet and neighborhood asking about it and using your real names for contact information. I mean, my hub and I both looked at each other and said, "???"

The websites they were posting on seemed to be really specific ones where you would only be going to if you were looking for jewelry. They probably figured that the chances that Chief Kang would visit those sites would be pretty slim. Or more likely that the writer is continuing to do what she has been doing so far in just building on coincidences and luck for our detectives.

3) has always bothered me the most. It was so dumb to come back to Korea when the killer could have waited a year longer and been in the clear. I know this is for the sake of plot but it really makes no sense whatsoever unless the person who committed the crime is arrogant enough to believe he won't be caught.

There is one other possibility, of course: money. Maybe the money the killer received to "stay hidden" ran out and he intended to come back and make Yoo give him more. But then he realized he had to take care of Dae Gu while he was there.

Dae Gu left his jacket with the necklace at the crime scene before he ran to the school. He then called Pan Seok to tell him about the necklace. I'm confused. Why does everyone think Dae Gu is Bag Lady's son? Isn't it more likely that he is her nephew - as in her brother was Dae Gu's father? See, I think the man died before he could marry Dae Gu's mother, like maybe she met him while in nursing school and it was a forbidden love because his family disapproved. Then this whole saga would come down to inheritance issues and that fact that after he died the man's family probably expected Dae Gu's mother aborted the baby or gave it away but she didn't and moved to Masan instead. Imagine however crazy Bag Lady would react if she found out a potential heir existed who could take away her/her son's inheritance. Maybe she'd be angry enough to whack someone on the head with a vase? Yeah, that's what I think. So that would make Bag Lady's son and Dae Gu cousins. :)

I'm really watching this show now for DG and PS - the bromance, which finally started to eke out ahead in this episode - is killing me in the best of ways. Especially when the grandmother mistaked them for father and son! LOL!

I will also throw in my two cents here about Chief Kang: she is the most complex character in the drama. But her corruption and her cause smack of hypocrisy. I don't doubt that she has done many things to be ashamed of in the last 11 years. In that respect, I find it hard to believe she could decide to simply turn herself in after her goal has been reached. Did she say that Assemblyman Yoo changed from the worst with increase in power? I feel she's vulnerable to that too, especially once the police force is given its independent investigation rights. Why give up after you finally reap all the benefits of what you sold your soul for? Wasn't that the reason to commit unethical acts in the first place? I can say I neither like nor hate her at this point. I guess that's why she is the most complex character.

I'd like it if Dae-gu isn't the product of an extramarital affair either. His mother seems like the kind of woman who wouldn't fall for another woman's husband and to become a mistress just on principle. She lives quietly in a small city and is raising her son as a single mother. She told Dae-gu that she and his father were very much in love and that they were planning to marry but he died before it could happen. I hope the viewers can take her at her word and this is, in fact, the case.

I hope that, if there is a blood relationship in the family, it's between Madam Yoo's husband and Dae-gu, not her brother because that would make Assemblyman Yoo his grandfather which is just weird. I'd like it, if they go that route, that they not be father and son but rather uncle and nephew. Because, again, Dae-gu's mother is quite clear that his father is dead and it would be great if YAAS not make his mother a liar to advance the plot.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think that would be interesting too but I can't see why Madam Yoo would despise the fact that he is alive if he was her husband's nephew. It seems to me it has to be more of a direct blood relation than a by-marriage relation - unless of course Dae Gu could take something away from her and her family through a by-marriage relation. Because that's what this is about: Madam Yoo is threatened by Dae Gu's existence. He holds some power of her just by being alive. And the question of why has yet to be answered!

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I guess the real question is, who has the money in the family? Is it Madam Yoo's family or is it her husband's family? When Dae-gu and Pan-suk go to see the French/Korean jeweller, Madam Yoo is identified as the wife of the chairman of a corporation rather than the daughter of a politician. In the flashback, Yoo seems to be just a high ranking cop with aspirations to politics rather than a rich man. If it's her husband's older brother who is Dae-gu's father then his existence would be very threatening to the Yoos. While Madam Yoo seems to be just psycho enough to harm her own brother's child, it seems incredible that her father would be complicit in the death of his own grandson.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's my problem with the birth secret as well. I just don't see his mom being "the other woman." And even if she was, why did Madam Yoo decide 11 years after the fact to pick an argument that ended up killing her? In the flashback, it didn't look like it was the first time they ever met, so her just finding out doesn't seem like a reasonable excuse. And, why did Madam Yoo go directly to the bedroom? That is kind of a random place to pick an argument when you walk past the kitchen and living room to do so unless she was looking for something particular. I can see how the mystery doesn't seem all that intricate, but I feel like there are some key plot points that have yet to be addressed that can give a good twist to the mystery. I hope they aren't just there to be forgotten.

Chief Kang's backstory was far more heartwrenching then I expected it to be and could have been very plausible and believable motivation behind her behavior...if any of her behavior later on had made any sense. It's just too bad nothing else about the mystery (aside from the death of Dae Gu's mom) was interesting or logical or heartwrenching at all.

Funny story though, I actually lived in South Korea for a year starting back in February 2012, and I was actually 30 minutes away from the same Masan in this drama. When the drama first started, I was insanely excited. I visited Masan frequently and had a number of friends there, so I was eagerly awaiting to see where in the town they might possibly film.

Well surprise, surprise, I have yet to see a scene in this drama set in Masan that actually looks like the real Masan. I never got to see all of Masan, but I saw a large chunk of it, and...it did not look the way the drama is portraying it.

I know this doesn't really matter. They probably filmed all the Masan scenes in Seoul somewhere, but it makes me sad. It would have been nice to see the real Masan again.
