Employment equals life for Surplus Princess

Character teasers are out for the fantasy-workplace-romance drama Surplus Princess, continuing tvN’s streak of bubbly, light-hearted previews for its romantic comedies. I still contend that mermaid fantasy and office drama are a random pairing, but they’re taking the title pun all the way, it seems (Surplus Princess and Little Mermaid, that is).

Jo Boa stars at the titular princess/mermaid who longs to become human (and whose ability to remain human hinges upon finding employment). I’m still unclear on which male lead is THE lead, but since a love triangle is inevitable, perhaps we’re just meant to wonder who gets the girl in the end. I’ll bet her reaction in the preview won’t be foreign to many of you, given what I’ve read around these here parts: Song Jae-rim poses coolly like a heartthrob… for the sel-cas he takes of himself and uploads online. Then in Jo Boa’s segment, she oohs and ahhs over them.

Then in the third teaser, Ohn Joo-wan hangs his hopes on a single phone call—one that ultimately rejects him for a job opening. Ah, the sad life of the unemployed. I guess unemployment is something of a metaphor because for Ohn Joo-wan, “Employment is the only way to live!” The same applies to the heroine, except her conflict is a matter of actual life and death.

After a long dry spell in rom-com-land, we’ve been flooded with them this season, and I have to say, I’m loving it. Keep ’em coming! Rom-coms are such a fixture in the front line of Hallyu that dramaland felt rather empty without them in recent years, so I’m super happy to have such a wealth of well-produced ones. It’s too early to say whether Surplus Princess will join the ranks of the good ones, but we can hope.

Surplus Princess will premiere on August 7, airing on tvN on Thursday nights.

What I absolutely love is that no one even tries to swoop in and claim him in her absence. We all just stand here and wait for Mary to come in and squee!

We do this because we either LOVE Mary. or we are afraid of the people who love Mary (*polishing brass knuckles and eyeballing "that" girl eyeballing SJR*).

No...?

Just realised I've only seen SJR in Saeguks, in modern environment he looks just as good...or even better!

Of course. I have a feeling there are two groups of people in the world. Those who love Mary and those who are afraid of the people who love Mary (**circling the wagons around Mary and SJR**).

I tend to avoid any teasers for dramas so I don't spoil the show for myself but I had to watch at least one since this premise is so odd. And we have so many dramas to choose from right now. I was hoping to weed this out but...
I am sold on the first teaser! I love when actors aren't to precious with their image!

Oh, come on - how could you possibly find this premise "odd": "..whose ability to remain human hinges upon finding employment.."

I'm looking forward to this. It's one of those dramas that could go either way for me because theres no way I can really guess what it's going to be like since it's such an odd premise. I'm optimistic though :)

Totally agree about all the rom-coms! All of a sudden there are so many and they're all really well-done! I forgot that dramaland could even be this sweetly satisfying :) And the nice thing is there's still a nice balance with dramas like Joseon Gunman, Night Watchman, and Three Musketeers. We've been lucky so far, so I hope this one can continue the trend :)

Okay, truthfully those teasers didn't really do anything for me (except make me realize that the female lead looks a lot like Sulli) but I'm still looking forward to this show. I feel like it has the potential to be super odd and funny.

I laughed so hard at Song Jae Rim's teasers when I first saw them. I watched them more than once; the laugh just kills me. And Ohn Joo Wan's teaser...omg, I can relate a little too well.

Looking forward to this it seems like it'll be really funny.

And off-topic but the site is no longer remembering my username and e-mail (I have to enter it every time) -- does anyone know what could be causing this?? ):

Also pretty excited to see Jo Boa again. She's cute. The screen-cap of her in the tub looks so serene, lol.

If I had to guess I'd say that sadly SJR is second lead and OJW is male lead. It fits the current Kdrama mold. SJR's character seems to be the hot perfect one that she drools over, but she ends up finding true love with the wacky, down on his luck one. They bond over how hard it is to find a job (I so could join that club), I suppose.
Just a guess, but I'm more than happy to be proved wrong.
Is anyone else missing SJR's mane of glory? Don't get me wrong, he's still ridiculously hot, but I've only ever watched his first two dramas, where he was rocking the long hair.

I agree. I don't think the second male lead would have his own solo teaser.

And can someone please explain all the "Mary" comments happening here? O.o

Mary is SJR's biggest fangirl. She is also pretty much the cutest fangirl when it comes to squeeing/obsessing over him.

Its come to a point when everyone is just waiting for her to post whenever its any news of him, especially drama news. So like king of dramas brought about "what would anthony do?" SJR news will bring about "where is Mary?"

I am hoping that this is wacky and cute. And goes all out with the fun the promise suggest. Also I do hope song jae rim is the male lead. Or he could steal it like he did for wtfparis. In any case its good to have him back at the screen.

Hopefully this also means more excited Mary that will lead to more joeb caps for us all to read.

Or like how Mo Ilhwa went from being a small side character that was meant to only appear in 4 episodes to a veritable "second lead" (just not in the romance department) because SJR was so popular with the viewers that the production team was basically forced to bring him back? Let's see if the power of the Rim comes through again, haha.

This hurts me to say, but I really think SJR is the second lead. Sigh.

The whole plot line (read it in other sites) sounds a lot like My Girlfriend is a Gumiho... not that it's a bad thing... hopefully it's as fun and as quirky as MGIAG.
