Nodame Cantabile casts its genius conductor

We have another addition to the cast of Korea’s remake of Nodame Cantabile, joining Joo-won in the music-university-set drama about a talented (but uptight) piano and conducting student and the cast of wacky musicians who surround him. The quirky heroine role of Nodame is still up for grabs (Shim Eun-kyung ended up passing), but we do have Baek Yoon-shik (Gu-am Heo Jun, Tree With Deep Roots) now cast as the Stresemann character. Aw, that should be fun times.

Pretty much all of the side characters in the story are oddball and bizarre, but I’d argue that Stresemann is hard to top in terms of being outrageously out-there. Sure he’s a brilliant world-famous conductor, but he’s also a party animal, hedonist, and incorrigible womanizer. In the original, he was the kind of guy our hero (Chiaki in the original, Cha Yoo-jin in this version) was always just about to write off as useless when he surprised with a sparkling gem of wisdom. He provided the hero with inspiration and exasperation in equal measure, and should make for a nice counter to Cha Yoo-jin’s fastidiousness.

It’s the mix of strong personalities that make Nodame Cantabile such fun, in a Real Genius sort of way. Considering that Baek Yoon-shik is a versatile veteran of dramaland, he should be able to handle both the comic shenanigans and the more dramatic moments, although I wouldn’t anticipate too much seriousness from him. It’ll be worth watching to catch his bickering matches with Joo-won and their occasional blowout benders together.

Nodame Cantabile will hit airwaves in October on KBS.

Good casting. I can see this; however, Nodame will make or break it for me.

That is soooo true. Chiaki is pretty translatable to the k-drama medium so the choice of actor isn't as vital for how the show will be perceived. But Nodame is a completely different story.

ikr...why are they concentrating so hard on casting Chiaki when they should work harder on looking for THE Nodame. Nodame Cantabile is mostly about Nodame's journey to music and Chiaki just happened to be the one who gave her a push.

i disagree that Chiaki is a character easily translatable to k-drama. Nodame is key (I don't think anyone disagrees on that), but she needs a complementary character in Chiaki, and the actors need to have some fantastic chemistry to make their scenes believable. You can have fantastic casting for Nodame but if Chiaki's actor falls flat, then it's just rubbish in the end.

Besides, Nodame based a lot of her actions on Chiaki, especially the studying abroad thing. He's not just "someone who gave her a push".

true enough. Although I was thinking more about the "character archetype" of Chisaki, being from a well known family, highly successful etc, tropes that are far from rare within the narrative sphere of K-dramas. I just hope they won't butcher his character by removing the emphasis on actually explaining how chisaki became such a genius, namely by doing nothing but studing etc, contrary to what the people around him seems to think, if they remove too much he will imo run the risk of becoming to generic. He also needs to have a decent comical timing in order to not seem like an a**hole, something many lesser k-drama leads seems to be lacking imo

I think Chiaki and Nodame are like the couple from It Started With a Kiss the TW version, that is how over time the dynamics between them change and by the end Chiaki sees that while Nodame had grown to a point where if she had to she could live without him, he on the other hand couldnt live without her. As for the Stresemann he gives some very good advise to both of them. The thing is that while Chiaki was called the genius it is Nodame that kept catching and passing him, driving him on.

yes, i'm really curious as to who will play Nodame. i was really looking forward to see the role carried by Shim Eun Kyung, but unfortunately she declines the role. whoever is considering the role now, hope the production chooses wisely. ^^ this is the most crucial casting for this project.

this will be a challenging drama for Joowon. he has never played the stereotyped male character before. his roles previously has always been very challenging. playing a 'normal' yet genius character is something new for him.

i hope the people here are not too skeptical on the characters of this drama based on previous works. it is an adaptation, so some things can change, even characters. do give Joowon a chance to prove himself. he's worried about this role too, and mentions how this role will be something new to him. he has attempted a variety of roles before, and have proven many of us wrong on his acting ability. so let's take this drama's casting with a pinch of salt, and wait for more news. ^^

Still need a Nodame, though. I'm still not sure that Joo Won can pull off a Chiaki... it was the chemistry in the original that made it sing well. Ueno Juri is a versatile actress who can play the super serious roles, to the silly and off beat... you need layers in order to make Nodame as a character work. On the surface she looks easy--which is what Chikai thinks initially, but a good performance will deliver those layers of emotion and comic timing.

Really can't see Joo Won as Chiaki.

Agree on Nodame/Ueno – that's an incredibility difficult character to play. Somehow I have a feeling they'll just get an idol or someone who can sing, when the musical talent is the least important thing for casting this role (piano playing is easily faked, the nuances in the personality of Nodame however not).

Joo Won isn't a Chiaki at all. He doesn't have the vibe that Tamaki Hiroshi exuded in truckloads in the J-drama adaptation. Chiaki is not an easy character to play either and I can't see Joo Won pulling it off.

And it's probably me, but Cha Yoo-jin doesn't have the same zing as Chiaki Shinichi.

Agree that they need an actress of Ueno Juri's calibre as well to pull off Nodame.

And hang on... if they're renaming the Chiaki character, are they still keeping the Nodame name?? The flavour will be lost if they rename the character, but it doesn't quite make sense to keep it intact either...

They could stylize it as Noh Dam-ae to keep the original and keep it "Korean".

but Nodame = Noda + Me(gumi), so a portmanteau of her surname and first mora of her given name.

Noh Dam-ae would read as her full name, which isn't right (it's a decent possibility though).

besides, Chiaki senpai has more zing than Cha sunbae...

They could let her keep Nodame, there are several ways to explain it. However, changing her name is a big no no to me. I am willing to give the show a try, but if they change too many of the basics my expectations will be low.

0

they could make her japanese. a korean-japanese couple?
there are possibilities to interpret the manga.
the cultural conflict of a japanese in korea and not being understood for her quirkyness, too. like a pun towards the audience who doesnt get the japanese style humor in the drama.

It's too bad that Shim Eun Kyung has passed on playing Nodame--she's the one actress who I could have really seen doing justice to Nodame's character. I've been trying to think of other actresses who might be a good Nodame...maybe Im Joo Eun? Otherwise, I'm stumped.

on the other hand, Witch´s Romance found its´own vibe and did not embarrass My Queen-lovers. so just maybe ....

Joo Won, you better eat a few kilos of lemons, you need to be sulky and pissed like your granny just ate your dog....or your dog ate the granny....or they did it simultaneously. or maybe Nodame ate both...or meant to eat but forgot them under the piano for 10 days. >a sample of the level of crazy, there. now live up to it.

Witch's Romance was a different genre though, and one that is generally done both in Taiwan as well Korea.

The way-out-there quirky and overtly sexual comedy isn't really done in Korea. I'm just not seeing all those crude jokes happening in this adaptation, and I feel Streseman is one of the most likely characters they'll... ummm... 'chasten'.

Well, we'll see.

Takenaka Naoto's portrayal as Streseman was brilliant. The character's depiction in the drama was a huge departure from the anime or the manga.

His style of dress for one. I laughed until I cried when I saw him for the first time.

Somehow I don't think this drama is going to be "saved" by any particular casting.

A miscasting can easy sink it though.

I really don't know how to feel about this drama. My hope is that they go for a totally different vibe. Well maybe not 'totally' but at least a little. The J-verson of Nodame Cantabile was kind of a miracle. The mix somehow found balance and it all came together to create a drama I absolutely loved. I do not see how the remake can top or match that. Especially with a longer format.

So I'm hoping that they tell "Nodame with a twist". While retaining the story and characters, telling the story with a new -and intententionally so- tone. Like they did with "To the beautiful you" and "Hana Kimi". While TTBY might not have always worked, at least I thought it had something to offer in how differently it approached the story. Anyway~ hope it's good cause I really want to watch it, if only for the music!

Indeed you are right ^^ I have read the manga though I have no watched the anime version. But you are right. And it was the same with Hana Kimi too~ so I'd better say: I hope they adapt the same story in a different way because J-dramas did their verson and it worked really well, I don't think the K-drama can be as good while telling the story the same way so I hope they find another way to adapt the manga~

But you're right and I'm usually careful with that cause I get a little annoyed when people say, for example, "the original was better" when talking about a movie that was done first but was based on a book -or something else^^-.

Im Joo Eun could do it, she can play off bea (Played evil), but I'm not sure of her comic timing, which is important for Nodame. Nodame can come off as childish, not immature childish, but child-like. Also, she has a certain way of getting angry as well... that's tricky to nail in acting--Ueno Juri nailed it from the manga (throwing Chiaki). At the same time she's passionate about music, but super sloppy about it. It's those layers that make the role a difficult one. If the person pulls it off, it's probably a career maker. If they fail, the whole drama is probably going to go down in smoke. It's one of those roles where it will be a make or break.

I'd kinda prefer if the person was able to pull off all those layers rather than have to learn it on the job, but I realize that's a tall order to ask. At least Comic timing, Child-like without being immature, and the quick timing to change emotions from happy, sad, etc that puts the audience in a position to keep up with her (At minimum) would be my askance.

I am interested in how this plays out in the Korean style. The Japanese version, like a lot of Japanese comedy, had the screechy over-acting and kiddy show directing of a Three Stooges short. I can't handle that more than about five minutes until I start flipping through scenes. The actress playing Nadame was trying hard, but everything else just irritated me. This version should have a different look to it.

I dropped both dramas when I originally tried watching them. But I tried them again months and months later (and a steady diet of other Japanese dramas in between) and then I loved them.

Now, I'm not saying that would happen with everyone, just that I don't think that these dramas are overrated, but that they require... some getting used to, some suspending of normal norms of comedy. Once you do, they hilarious. If you never try again, that's good too. We all have different tastes after all :-)

I am looking forward to the Korean adaptation. I think that it should have a different feel but still have the quest for love of music, finding oneself, and a little romance. The music and inspiration, the chemistry between all the actors and actresses were great in the Japanese adaptation. I think the violence should be toned down a bit. I think the characters should still be over the top but still have those Korean element to make it great.

I also expected the names to be changed to a Korean one to make it match the region and country elements.

Questionable...... For me, I think what really makes the Japanese drama adaptation is really its Japanese comedic timing. Some people mentioned that they couldn't get through it.... it really is an issue with Japanese comedy - I think some of it is really lost for foreigners, maybe?

That said, having read the manga, watched the anime, AND the Japanese drama adaptation...... I am really skeptical as to whether or not this will live up to my expectations. It most likely won't. But I'd rather that they just make this story entirely different and just ditch the idea of making it "Nodame Cantabile". I think a drama is sufficient out of the main theme of two music students who learn through each other, the love of music, and how their love grows as time goes on. Like the whole time development of their relationship. That aspect can be adapted into a Korean drama, imo, much more easily than trying to make a Korean adaptation of "Nodame Cantabile".

Anyway, looks like it's time for me to rewatch the anime and the drama again............
