Jo Boa, Ohn Joo-wan, Song Jae-rim cast in new tvN fantasy drama

It looks like tvN is really pushing the single-episode-per-week format, because there’s another Thursday night drama headed our way this summer, set to follow Rude Miss Young-ae Season 13. The drama is called Surplus Princess (ing-yeo gong-joo), a pun on Little Mermaid (in-uh gong-joo). It’s about a mermaid’s quest to become human, which, of all things, is based on whether or not she can find employment. So basically it takes the highly competitive job search, turns it into a metaphor about needing to be salaried to be treated as human, which is then made literal again by the fact that she’s an actual mermaid? I guess at least the title makes sense now: too many princesses for so few entry-level positions in life.
Jo Boa (Shut Up: Flower Boy Band) has been cast as the lead, a mermaid with a temporary stint posing as a human. Her one shot to become human permanently is to get a job, which is the least sensical supernatural rule I’ve ever heard, but perhaps there’s more to it. (Oh, and by employment they mean a full-time salaried position, not any random part-time job. Not that the supernatural job fairy should follow society’s rules anyway, but whatever.)
Ohn Joo-wan (above right, Sword and Flower) and Song Jae-rim (above left, Age of Feeling) will both be on the job hunt along with our heroine, and so far all we know about them is that Song Jae-rim’s character is arrogant and rubs people the wrong way. I’d put my money on Ohn Joo-wan being the lead, but the casting stories don’t say either way.
The drama will follow the three of them as they suffer the daily grind and the hardships of the job search, with romance and fantasy to add a little whimsy to the proceedings. Directing is PD Baek Seung-ryong and writers Park Ran and Kim Ji-woo, who are all from the SNL Korea team. I think that means we’re in for more comedy than an earnest fantasy story, but who says we can’t do both?
Surplus Princess follows Rude Miss Young-ae on Thursday nights starting in late July.

Who said hoping and praying don't work. He got a lead role(hopefully the main one) due to your incense burning.

YAY. Another promising drama to look forward to! And with a certain casting choice that I'm sure will probably make a certain someone and everyone, for that matter, very happy! Even I have caught the Song Jae-Rim fever! (I hadn't watched Age of Feeling, but went back for his scenes after hearing such wonderful things haha)
I also liked Jo Boa in Shut Up even though she's very green. She could have partly lucked out with a good character there, but she portrayed her fairly well and I think this will be her shot to show how versatile she can be. She certainly has a fun character opportunity here! The other guy looks familiar, but I'm not sure where I've seen him.

Hella crushing on Jo Bo-ah, if I watch it would be for her. I don't know about the synopsis of the show, though. Since tvN does have a good track record when it comes to dramas it might be a pleasant surprise.

saw Jo Boa in Shut Up and Thorn (movie) - and she has improved... it saddens me how she felt she need to do Thorn (19+ movie) because her role offers were little to none after filming Horse Doctor.
for the curious, Thorn was pretty terrible. but Jang Hyuk is in it, if that matters to anyone.
i'm excited for this drama casting though. I too, am fairly certain that Ohn Joo-wan would be the male lead. i like him, but he did leave me a bitter aftertaste in the ending of Twelve Men in a Year. thanks for the news GF!

YAY. This sounds like it has the potential to be funny and relatable (cause looking for a job sucks for everyone, UGH). I also like the fantasy element which sounds absolutely ridiculous - I almost wish that Jiyeon had been a real witch in Witch's Romance - but anyway, this sounds cute! And fun! And the one episode format doesn't bother me that much. I like them trying new things.

The drama sounds a bit strange, but interesting.
I've only seen Jo Boa in SUFBB, but she was really cute and likable. And I hope SJR is the other lead.

Sooo surprised to know that many liked this girl as an actress. I mean she's cute and all, very pretty indeed to the point that I can say that she's one of those natural beauties. But, her acting is... meh. The worst thing in SUFBB was her character which was sadly not helped by her acting. I also saw Horse Doctor for Jo SeungWoo nd Kim So Eun which made me accidently saw her performance there and... she was not seen to improve. Well, maybe this character will suit her? I'm interested in what TvN produces though, might as well check this one. But hey please give me LET'S EAT 2 with the freaking same characters as the first faster! Dae Young aaah!

Not sure if her beauty is natural but her acting is ok for a first timer in SUFBB. Not a natural talent like Lee Yoo Bi or Im Joo Eun but certainly not at Suzy/Jin Se Yeon levels of awful either. .

She actually has improved her acting a lot after she co-starred with Jang Hyuk in Thorn.
I agree, she has a lot of room she can grow as an actress, but she's still one of my girl crushes :)

I just liked him in Two Weeks and AoF... then WTFParis, then everywhere.

Just finished watching "My Mighty Princess" with Ohn Joo Wan in it, and I thought he was so loveable and shippable with Shin Min Ah!! So much, that I almost overship my otp and don't want him to star with anyone else, even if it's my girl crush Jo Boa!! (ok jk but still... the feelsss)
I'm actually intrigued by this whole mermaid storyline. I like the weird stuff. :P
