Doctor Stranger: Episode 7

Huzzah! It’s the return of dark Hoon in one fantastic hero-driven hour as he battles both demons and diseases that depend more on his guts than his genius. Even with a surgical competition over who gets to operate on the corrupt politician looming over everyone’s heads, our doctors still have time to mull over questions of love and destiny. And although we learn the events surrounding how Dad and Hoon were sent up North in the first place, an interesting twist throws a wrench in the puzzle.

Numbers pulled back up for Doctor Stranger as this episode hit 13.1% in ratings. Big Man reached double digits with 10.3%, and Triangle trailed behind with 6.7%.

EPISODE 7 RECAP

Enveloping Seung-hee in his arms, Hoon listens to their heartbeats in hopes that they’re synchronous. His eyes fly open just as Seung-hee pushes him away and stalks off. He’s definitely realized something; we just don’t know what yet.

Called out on his brash act, Hoon explains how there’s only one other person in the world whose heart perfectly beats in sync with yours—your soulmate. Soo-hyun momentarily buys into the idea, thinking of Jae-joon… and then Hoon laughs, saying that he was just pulling her leg. Even if destiny exists, it wouldn’t be with Seung-hee. I can’t tell whether you’re lying or not.

Soo-hyun freezes when Hoon draws near, asking teasingly whether she might be his soulmate then. He pulls her into a hug to check, only to be pushed away and get slapped in response. Ow.

He runs ahead of her to offer Seung-hee a deep apology, telling her that he mistook her for someone else. He’s told to behave accordingly before all of them are called into the ER.

Meanwhile, Doctor Moon tapes up the medical records as good as but not really new. He figures they’ve already proven that Seung-hee isn’t a spy, only to be reminded of his own naivety because the CT scans could have easily been fabricated.

Things aren’t looking good for the pregnant patient, whom Hoon identifies (thanks to his genius) has a pulmonary laceration. The patient is losing blood quickly, and they have to move quickly to prevent further harm to both the mother and fetus.

As Hoon operates, Doctor Moon says it’s a pity that Seung-hee’s a spy since her remarkable celerity would make her a great addition to his surgical team. Doctor Yang asks what that means. Once he’s filled in, he’s happy to offer his suggestions in exchange for a raise, and then says all they need to do is have her take another CT scan. Doctor Moon is all, D’oh!

We jump back to the operating theater where Hoon gives Seung-hee a hard time when the patient’s blood pressure suddenly drops. He doesn’t buy her excuses, and Soo-hyun has to tell him to back off—it’s unfair of him to get angry at Seung-hee just because she isn’t who he was looking for.

But Hoon tells her to focus and decides that they may as well and perform a cesarean now. The remainder of the operation is a success, even delivering a pair of gummi babies. Double Mazel tov! Also, I guess everyone who performs a successful operation in that theater gets a round of applause.

As the patient is taken away, she softly reaches for Soo-hyun’s hand in gratitude. Jae-joon finds Soo-hyun smiling over how wonderful it feels to do something good for their patients in their line of work. His devil advocate perspective doesn’t wipe the smile off of her face as she says how great it is to work with Hoon.

She smiles proudly at Hoon when he saunters over, and Jae-joon grabs her before she leaves to remind her that she’s his first mate on his surgical team. The boys even exchange a smile, though Jae-joon’s tiny smirk disappears once Hoon is gone.

Hoon is stopped in the hallway by Doctor Moon, who’d like to add Seung-hee to their surgical team, but he’s still absorbed by his “she could be a spy” theory. It would be great for Hoon if Seung-hee actually is Jae-hee, but then that would make them both North Korean spies. “Or are you not one?” Doctor Moon asks.

Hoon says they’ve already confirmed Seung-hee’s medical charts which state otherwise, but Doctor Moon is convinced that those could be faked, so today’s the day to be positively sure. Hoon shrugs in response.

Turns out Doctor Moon had pulled strings beforehand, having ordered that Seung-hee’s results be handed to him directly. She isn’t happy about getting checked out again, but undergoes the battery of tests anyway. Hoon asks if they won’t be arrested for this, too, but Doctor Moon just grumbles that he won’t be going down alone.

Seung-hee calls to inform Agent Cha about this turn of events, to which she’s told that those would reveal her personal information. We also see Agent Cha is talking to her while standing in a spacious apartment.

She gets called away to see Doctor Moon and Hoon, and is further perplexed to hear that they want to confirm how many kidneys she has. If Seung-hee has only one working kidney like Song Jae-hee does, that means they’re the one and the same. (About the whole one vs. two kidney thing: Recall that both of Jae-hee’s kidneys were failing, hence the need for an organ transplant. Medically speaking, that would bring the total kidney count to three [since the docs would leave the other ones in], but would still result in one functioning kidney. If Seung-hee has two working kidneys, it’d prove she’s someone else entirely.)

Seung-hee is alarmed to see her own medical results in their hands, calling the breach of privacy a serious offense. She tries to get it back, but Hoon takes her by the shoulders. Telling her to stay still, he shakes his head.

They stare at each other for a few seconds as Doctor Moon inserts the CD. Just then Director Choi bursts in, demanding the CD. But Hoon ignores the order and brings up the results on the screen. Is Director Choi looking at Seung-hee with sympathy? None of them know that Doctor Yang has seen them look through the records, and he puts in a call.

The results surprise them, and Doctor Moon sinks into his chair: “There are two [kidneys].” Seung-hee storms off, and Director Choi follows after her, offering to apologize on their behalf. She doesn’t intend to let this incident go that easily, questioning how private information can be passed that easily. Among the myriad of hospital security questions we have, hon.

He urges her to reconsider, and his request is quickly followed by both Doctor Moon and Hoon. She walks away without an answer.

We get a short break to check on Chang-yi, who freely strips in front of Hoon, much to his alarm. Turns out she’s wearing all of her part-time uniforms in layers and teases him with her jjimjilbang t-shirt: “Want me to show you what’s under this one?” Snerk.

Hoon heads back to the clinic and places the nicked CD containing Seung-hee’s test results in the drawer when Director Choi suddenly shows up. Director Choi plans to travel to China (and then North Korea) in a few days, to which Hoon tells him not to because he’ll find Jae-hee on his own.

Hoon couldn’t care less about what Director Choi has to say anymore, but the director is here to explain why Dad was sent to the DPRK. He hands Hoon an envelope whose contents Hoon recognizes as the malpractice suit made against Myungwoo Hospital in 1994—the one he saw lying on the dining room table all those years ago.

A lengthy series of flashbacks fills us in surrounding the events leading up to Dad’s departure. As the plaintiff, Dad had told Director Choi about the lawsuit beforehand, reminding him that a patient died on the table. When Director Choi had replied anyone could make a mistake, Dad had chuckled, “Do you know why people call us doctors? Because people don’t accept any errors from a doctor. A doctor handles a life.”

Realizing that Director Choi still wouldn’t say who held the scalpel, Dad had given that surgeon a word of warning: to feel the great burden of wearing a doctor’s coat. Then Director Choi had sought to claim full responsibility because it was during his surgery. Ohhh damn.

However, Chairman Oh had been more concerned about Myungwoo Hospital’s future—admitting to malpractice would dash their hopes to be approved as a university hospital. Director Choi’s insistence to stick to his morals only angered Chairman Oh.

And who else should be involved in these events but then Assemblyman Jang, who had taken both men out to dinner. There he had offered a plan to make everyone happy: North Korea is in need of a surgeon, preferably a free agent who isn’t affiliated with Myungwoo Hospital. That’s where Park Chul (Dad)’s participation comes in because Myungwoo would avoid a malpractice suit if the plaintiff is mysteriously gone.

We replay the events of Episode 1 as Dad is told about Leader Kim’s heart, and after Mom refused to look after Hoon, Dad had called Director Choi for a favor. Then Director Choi had turned to the then-Assemblyman Jang, while lying on his hospital bed, had assured the man that he’d take responsibility for both Dad and Hoon.

Hoon calls bullshit on that promise. “Responsibility for what?” He also counter-argues Director Choi’s claims of working with the politician to retrieve him and Dad to no avail by pointing out that he and Dad were sent to die. That’s news to Director Choi, who supposes Hoon was fed lies in the North. Says the far too naive hospital director.

But Hoon roars that he heard it with his own ears. Director Choi says Hoon can be his own judge, but they had to stop an imminent war. Hoon replies frankly that it was just a doctor who went to save a patient. “And you people just used my father.”

“Because of your greed, my father and I were sent to the North… and were abandoned like garbage.” Hoon says haltingly, barely containing his anger. “Do you have any idea what it was like for us to live in that strange world?”

When Director Choi points out that Dad raised Hoon to be a doctor anyway, Hoon asks, offended: “A doctor? Do I look like a doctor to you?” That final statement is what finally breaks Hoon, because he was taught that a doctor doesn’t kill people. But Hoon had seen and experienced the exact opposite: “There… there… doctors kill people.”

Angry tears stream down his cheeks as he hollers and recounts how he murdered countless people by his own hands. That’s not a doctor, Hoon argues, but some crazed dog who cuts into people. The horror in his voice is absolutely chilling, and Director Choi’s understanding tone is too much of a disproportionate response to my ears.

Director Choi tells Hoon to think of Dad who raised him, but Hoon has had enough: “How do you know how my father felt?” Dad had sacrificed his life so that his own son could remain as a doctor. “And what do you know of a son who feels like a worthless dog for abandoning his father?”

Putting down the parcel he’d been carrying, Director Choi says they still haven’t recovered Dad’s body. He leaves Hoon to open the box to find Dad’s glasses and bag. The memories with Dad becomes too much for Hoon to bear, and he falls to his knees clutching his father’s belongings.

Director Choi waits patiently outside until Hoon emerges to hand back the lawsuit documents. He asked what happened to the patient’s family. The man died along with his wife soon after, leaving the boy an orphan, and Director Choi intends to find the child in America after he brings Jae-hee over.

But Hoon says he’ll find Jae-hee himself, so he asks that Director Choi go to America and admit his wrongs.

Jae-joon lingers outside of a high-rise before running into Soo-hyun outside, both been called to see Chairman Oh. As they take the elevator, Soo-hyun suddenly wraps her arms around him and rests her head to his chest. Are you listening to his heartbeat? But… you know that his heart is on the other side, right?

Once they arrive, she asks if he believes in destiny. He laughs, asking if she believes in things like that and she brushes it aside.

As they eat, Chairman Oh declares that he believes it’s time the couple should consider marriage. Soo-hyun asks if her father believes in destiny, recalling how he felt towards her mother.

Jae-joon politely replies that he believes marriage is something he and Soo-hyun should decide for themselves, and the two assure Chairman Oh that their relationship is fine. Jae-joon wears an unsettled expression when Soo-hyun excuses herself after a call.

He follows after her and takes her hand to answer her earlier question: He doesn’t think destiny is a concept to believe in; rather he thinks people make their own destiny. She smiles, saying that answer that befits him.

As the elevator descends, her thoughts linger back to her embrace with Jae-joon. Something about it leaves her disappointed, but recalling Hoon’s hug makes her smile. She has to snap herself out of it.

Back at the table, Chairman Oh checks if Jae-joon will take responsibility (read: intends to marry) for Soo-hyun, which Jae-joon promises. Then he declares that Jae-joon will eventually take charge of everything, including Myungwoo Hospital.

It turns out Soo-hyun was called away to check a potential apartment… the same one we saw Agent Cha in earlier. Not a coincidence, methinks. That’s why she isn’t at the hospital like she said she’d be, but Jae-joon is.

As he lords over his wooden collection, he breathes, “Father, Mother… I’m almost there. Wait just a little longer.” Oh. My. God. Are YOU the orphan who lost his parents because of Director Choi?!

Doctor Moon makes more of a fool out of himself than usual, seeking forgiveness on one knee from Seung-hee while bearing flowers. She acknowledges that they might work alongside together on occasion, but rejects the offer to join their surgical team.

The hilarious thing is that Doctor Moon reacts like he’s been rejected to his own romantic confession, and when Chi-gyu tells him to give it up now because it’s been a week already, Doctor Moon tells him to worry about his own love life.

Hoon and Doctor Moon overhear the new mother of twins apologize about her rising medical costs. He tells her that being sick is nothing to be sorry about and leads her away. As he treats her, he promises to check on the twins. When Doctor Moon says that choosing their team is more urgent, Hoon counters, “What’s more urgent to a doctor than treating a patient?”

Back in Doctor Moon’s office, he explains that he wants to compose his own team that’s better than Jae-joon’s dream team since he could take back his chief of surgery position. It’s his dream because his blue-collar father lived his life feeling ashamed in a doctor’s presence.

His father’s dying wish was that Doctor Moon rise to a prestigious position, and when Hoon jokes that mustn’t be the only reason why, he blubbers that the pay’s good, too. Pfft. He’s determined to have the best anesthesiologist out there on their team, and that’s Seung-hee.

Hoon asks why he’s so hell-bent on finding the best, and Doctor Moon whispers that it’s because the patient is Prime Minister Jang. Director Choi affirms it in their presence moments later, and Hoon scoffs in disbelief.

Despite Nightshade’s protests that it’s too dangerous, Prime Minister Jang believes it’s time he meets “them” in person. Wait, those are Chang-yi’s mother’s charts he burned.

Then Prime Minister Jang shares a morbid joke to emphasize the need for more cardiothoracic surgeons. Nightshade announces the hospital candidates for the prime minister’s upcoming surgery to their reporter guests, a list that includes Myungwoo Hospital.

Chairman Oh shares the same news to the rest of the board directors. Being selected (and a successful surgery) equals money and advertisement for the hospital, and two different teams will compete for the chance to operate on the prime minister.

Jae-joon and his dream team is a given, but the room gasps to hear that Hoon is leading the other surgical team. He’s willing to give those teams a fair shot to represent Myungwoo Hospital.

Hoon doesn’t buy Director Choi’s reasoning that saving the prime minister could mean national recognition for him, and simply asks what truth he’s trying to hide this time. “Why else would you ask me to operate on him?!” Director Choi points out that Dad saved Kim Il-sung, but Hoon snarls, “I’m not my father!”

He storms out and runs into Seung-hee. Still looking at her face, he states his refusal. He marches into Jae-joon’s office and literally throws in his white coat in defeat. Jae-joon acknowledges that a competition among doctors is ridiculous, though he had greatly anticipated a match against Hoon.

Hoon is met with an alarming situation outside, as an injured nurse is led away. He follows the sound of babies crying to see the mother wielding a scalpel, threatening anyone who draws close. Doctor Yang tends to the nurse outside, warning her to be careful because they have to think of their own child. Oh, so she is pregnant?

Both twins have a congenital heart defect, which Hoon believes the mother was too poor to get checked out properly. Although surgery is risky, Hoon is willing do it. Not if Sang-jin has something to say about it though.

Sang-jin barks back numbers, but Hoon doesn’t consider any of it more important than a patient’s life. It isn’t kicking a patient out if they leave by police escort, Sang-jin remarks. Soo-hyun joins the party at that moment, and then another scream.

One of the twins have stopped moving, and the mother tosses aside her threats for her child’s safety. Soo-hyun is sent to stop Sang-jin, and when he continues to be a douche, she grabs his tie and warns him not to mess with her.

Inside, Seung-hee says that they’ve lost a pulse, so Hoon starts to gently administer CPR on the infant. And then he breathes a relieved sigh when the baby’s heart beats once more. He places the baby into his mother’s arms and looks on as she breaks down in tears. Seung-hee puts out a friendly hand, acknowledging that Hoon’s acting like a doctor.

Sang-jin pushes Soo-hyun aside to barge in, only to see the situation completely contained. Somehow, that’s oddly satisfying.

Prime Minister Jang visits Myungwoo Hospital and can’t hide his disappointment to hear that Hoon has withdrawn. That’s when Hoon walks in himself, here to collect his coat.

He’s also here to agree to that surgical competition, on one condition: that the hospital pays for the competition’s costs. In other words, cover the medical bills for the patients involved.

Hoon interprets the room’s response to mean that they accept. He turns away, but stops when Prime Minister Jang speaks up. Then Hoon turns his head to smirk at the already smiling man.

COMMENTS

Even though I’m not a fan of a medical competition that gambles with people’s lives for the sake of prestige and to save one corrupt politician, I am relieved that it’ll provide a means for Hoon to treat his patients without them having to worry about the costs involved ’cause medical treatment ain’t cheap, and surgical fees cost upwards of 500 won. Okay, that’s just pocket change.

This was a fantastic episode for Hoon, especially now that we’ve digressed from Operation: Finding Jae-hee (temporarily). If that whole synchronous heartbeat theory is true, Hoon is the only person who knows for sure. In that sense, we can only go off of what he tells Soo-hyun (and us), and for now he’s saying Seung-hee isn’t Jae-hee. But more importantly, we were witness to the dark side of Hoon, whose inner turmoil was set off by what it means to be a doctor. The devil-may-care attitude he’d adopted upon living in the South had me worried, but the confrontation with Director Choi reveals what lies beneath: his tortured self for being called a doctor for murdering lives instead of saving them; to continue in this line of work for his father who laid down his life.

It’s Lee Jong-seok’s chilling performance that brings Hoon’s rage and betrayed feelings to life—seeing the hurt plainly written on his face, hearing the anguish in his voice. Hoon’s dark and rich inner character conflict is what continues to pull me in; I find it far more interesting to see these outbursts or his struggle between his reality in the DPRK versus what he sees in South Korea than any other time he taps into his genius (though, admittedly, there are times the accompanied visual effects look pretty cool. And expensive).

Bringing it back up to the Big Conspiracy, the show once again provides answers a few episodes too late. We saw how Prime Minister maneuvered the play to use everyone from Chairman Oh to Director Choi to Dad, and yet we still don’t know how the North is involved and whatever their Top Secret Mission is. Given how the show continues to juggle a variety of things that run the gamut from conspiracy-love-story-espionage-medical-ethics and more, I’m worried that we’re going to lose one of these elements because it’s way too much for the show to handle. That, and you could jump to five random points in the hour and end up watching five very different genres.

Coming back to Director Choi, however, I did find his calm and too understanding response to Hoon pretty aggravating. Ultimately it was his surgical error that led to a malpractice suit that endangered the hospital’s future and also countless lives, including Dad and Hoon. Okay, that sounds rather fatalistic, and to his credit, he is trying to atone for his sins in his present actions. Perhaps I’m more irritated because his character’s response seemed disproportionate to Hoon’s outburst, and I’d be more understanding if only Director Choi didn’t have such a remarkably naive outlook on what happened in the past and present.

Then neither he nor Hoon nor anyone knows what happened to that young orphan boy affected by that malpractice suit… unless all roads lead to Jae-joon. There are enough hints that suggest that Jae-joon might be the boy from America (e.g., his past employment at Harvard), but who really knows at this point. If it’s true, though, it’d be a great character turn for the ambitious Jae-joon. What a marvelous twist that would be for the already dark knight.

Soo Hyun is certainly one of the most annoying and bitchiest character Ive ever encountered in the Kdrama world. Someone who cries like the world ended because Hoon didnt like her back? Hahahaha she KNEW that Hoon only had his heart for Jae Hee. Besides that, she fell for Hoon while dating another man. She was sulking like a baby when she found out Seung Hee is Jae Hee and that Seung Hee/Jae Hee is with Hoon. Why cant u just accept reality, bitch? On top of that, she's dating Jae Joon, for god's sake. I was so fucking annoyed by her during the drama but I continued watching for Hoon and Jae Hee. I dont understand why you all ship her with Hoon. I dont hate her but I cant stand her for meddling with Hoon and Jae Hee's love lives.

That medically speaking part about kidney counts to be up to three, um what? When kidneys go bad and get a kidney transplant, then it means the doctors have taken out the bad kidneys and replaces with one working kidney. No way would there ever be three kidneys in one body.

My friend had a kidney transplant a year ago and during (most) kidney transplants both kidneys (even if they are not working properly) are kept in and a third new kidney is added above the lower abdomen. They try not to remove the kidneys because doing so would require a blood transfusion which leads to the growth of antibodies that can attack the new kidney. There are other reasons as well but that's the only one I remember and I'm sure someone else here could explain it better.

I stand myself corrected, they do leave the kidneys in most cases, however in this case, hoon replaced the kidney with one working kidney (may be they were infected), so jaehee only has one kidney.

Like Gummi said, when people get kidney transplants, they usually just insert another kidney and leave the remaining 2 inside. They don't need to remove any of the bad kidneys. So, 3 kidneys in total. :)

That's such a reasonable question!

But he already checked her heart and from what I saw...she is Jae Hee definitely.

Besides the fact that a different conclusion wouldn't make sense in romance loving dramaland, Hoon knows but is covering it up. If you love someone you would even go with their lie because you trust they have a good reason for doing so.

He's a geeeniiiuuusss doctor and he was able to live through North Korea as one (which I think might be even more impressive). I don't get why gummi seems so oblivious to that. AND the fact that Jae-joon OF COURSE is the little boy. We are in dramaland come on!

yeppp, I was starting to get bored of the Patient of the Week even if LJS with a baby does kill me with how adorable it is. (speaking of which, this PD needs to work around the weakness of the '_____ of the Week' scenario', because at least with ghosts it was kinda interesting, but medical stuff, yawn).

And Jae-joon is totally the original orphan, which means by rights he and Hoon should actually be teaming up to take down the hospital. I wish he got more screen time, though, because this combined with his Soo-hyun dilemma is far more interesting than Hoon's Find-My-Girlfriend game.

1.Wow, I totally missed the possibility that Jae-joon could be the kid from America! That would be so cool, hope it's true. :)

2. Ok, so my theory is that Hoon is now sure that she is really Jae Hee and that he helped hide/fake her new physical results. My reasoning is:

- he was reluctant and indifferent when Dr. Moon suggested getting new tests to confirm. Hoon already knows who she is and doesn't want Dr. Moon to stick his nose in.
- Seung-Hee and Mr. Evil Spy were annoyed and concerned that she had to retake the tests- hints that they have something to hide.
- In the scene where Dr. Moon and Hoon confront Jae-hee, the previously reluctant Hoon is now determined to show the results of the test. When Seung-Hee tries to stop it he blocks her, looking her in the eye- my interpretation is that he is reassuring her and asking her to trust him. Then when the director comes in and almost stops them, he shoves the disk in and they see she has 2 kidneys- "prooving" that she is not a spy. Hoon is trying to protect her cover. He must have switched the new test results just before and pushed to have Dr. Moon see them in order to dispell his suspicions.
- Hoon takes a CD home and hides them when the director comes in- perhaps Jae Hee's real test results?
- Finally, when Hoon finds out they want him to operate on Evil Prime Minister he states his refusal directly to Seung-Hee like he knows she has a vested interest in that outcome.

I was pretty certain of this when I first watched the episode, but gummimochi didn't see it. Anyone else on the same page as me?

I agree after the heartbeat thing he knows its her now he is just trying to figure out whats going on. The way he looks at her is a dead give away, plus when choi offered to help find jh even if he hated the guy he would have took him up on the offer because he loves her so much, the only reason not to is because he knows sh is jh. Also when he told sh he couldnt act like a doctor to the prime minister he did so because jh would understand him

That was my take on it. Hoon is now 100% sure Seung Hee is Jae Hee and he'll protect her in whatever way she needs him to.

The hands on the shoulder stare off was to let Seung Hee know that he knows etc etc.

I don't doubt the possibility that everyone might be right when it comes to Seung-hee/Jae-hee; it's safer for now to write out (within the recap, at least) the scene straight.

I suppose we'll get answers when they come (which is apparently like two or three episodes much later than we expect), so I'll wait it out :)

Hoon hiding the CD with the real test results is a clever idea. Nice theory there. Will be looking forward to next episodes to confirm that.

Jae-joon is the orphan from US. So sure about that. Now the castle-takeover makes sense even more. Its just sad that he's a second lead again. Hope he can be a star in his own drama after this.

I am so glad you referred to LJS's acting out that scene. I thought it was some great piece of acting.

I liked this episode a lot. But it is pretty clear though based on all those gestures etc. that Park Hoon knows she is Jae Hee. I have no doubts that she is her and he knows that now. Same heartbeat or whatever...I mean seriously... Can't really get cynical here. But he knows it is her and is clearly left wondering why she is behaving this way. I also have no doubt that he is trying to protect her identity while he figures out what is going on around him.

I am so looking forward to what has to come.

Haha yea I can't help but laugh whenever that heartbeat thing is mentioned.
Actually I had read somewhere that if two people hug each other long enough, one's heartbeat will follow the other's rhtym and eventually their heart would beat in sync, destiny/fated lover notwithstanding.. (because of this hug is perceived as good way to calming people with anxiety/panic disorder). So while I had learn to not take anything from drama seriously, knowing this make that heartbeat plot extra silly lol..

Really still confused by this whole show. I don't understand anything. I'm not watching so I can't see exactly how they act with each other, but I'm starting to think soo Hyun is the otp. It makes sense bc then your triangle is her, jae joon, and hoon. I'm not complaining. I'm not watching so I don't know how good their chemistry is, but just from recaps, she seems to be getting too much sceentime for a second lead

I'm sort of watching and yes, I am confused as well. Soo Hyun gets waaaay more screen time then Seung Hee so it makes it seem like she's the otp. I have no problems with that since I love the character but I wish the show would just hurry up and clarify this so that I'm not in so much agony trying to figure out whose the otp.

LOL.

Haha. You know, being confused implies that there exists some substance for viewers to comprehend but cannot. Thus far, there is little in this drama to understand, because, since Budapest, the drama has been lost and can't dig its way out. It is almost as if one veteran team of writer, director and PD did the first two big bang episodes, then a lowrent team of writer, director and PD took over afterwards.

So, I just enjoy occasional scenes in which Lee Jong Seok pops, making indelible images (like today with the non-breathing baby). He is really worth it. I am all for him. But I fear that this drama will not get him to the top league where Kim Soo Hyun reigns.

I really liked Park Hae Jin in My Love from Another Star and in My Daughter Seo Young. Although he's yet again a second lead and an ambitious doctor in this drama, I hope the writer isn't now throwing in a revenge drama storyline into this already convoluted story. There is just so much going on already.

The whole one or two kidneys as proof of Seung Hee being Jae Hee is seemingly easy to fake (and apparently medical records are easy to access in this universe). Couldn't they see if she has a scar in her shoulder from the bullet wound that she got in Budapest? What about scars from her kidney surgery if she's Jae Hee?

Regardless if she's a brainwashed Jae Hee, I can't see her and Hoon getting together in the end. They will have both been coerced to do what the DPRK powers wanted -- how tragic.

I'm into the Soo Hyun and Hoon pairing. That would mean she rejects Jae-Joon, foiling his plans to take over the hospital. Too bad he doesn't really love Soo Hyun and is just using her as a stepping stone in his ambition (and revenge?) to take over the "castle" by using the princess. Don't really want Jae joon to turn out to be a villain.

I officially dislike Jae Joon alot now because i dont care about the lame birth secret revenge thing. He shouldnt use, play a good woman like Soo Hyun because of that. He could have gotten the hospital, his revenge another way if he wasnt a lazy coward.

Plus he looks very petty, small time, corrupt playing for politics when he could be a hardworking doctor out more to save lifes. He needs to go down atleast before Soo Hyun eyes and not trick her.

For me, Jae-joon got a lot more interesting once that birth secret clicked into place, but then that may just be because I like morally grey, well-acted characters - it adds complexity and a motivation to his ambition. It also adds an additional layer of conflict to his feelings for Soo-hyun, which we've already seen are starting to be real for him.

But yes, I'd be happier for them if he was honest with her, she's my favourite character in the drama and will probably be really hurt once she finds out her lover was playing her all along.

Great acting from LJS in that scene with Coward!Dr Choi. Park Hoon's dark past as a doctor who killed and how he copes or uncopes with it by acting like a happy go lucky, least troubled young man is intriguing. It makes his breakdown even more devastating because you realize he never forgets and forgives himself. Hoon's journey to make peace with his past, with himself, to growth into the doctor Dad wanted him to become will be the most gratifying to watch, much more so than finding out which girl he's gonna end up with.

OMG, i think i stopped breathing twice watching this episode. The first was when Jaejoon asked his parents to wait, all the previous story about his ambition and the parentless boy clicked together. I really got a chill. And of course the baby episode, they're too cute and watching Hoon massaged the baby's heart with his thumb, omg.
I don't know but i think Soo Hyun is more suitable as Hoon's match, i know it won't happen anyway, just saying.
And everyone's acting is great here, park hae jin is really good channeling Jaejoon after playing lovesick Hwikyung in Man from the stars, i was in doubt whether he could play the evil character or not, but he did, awesomeeee

yeah, I remember watching YFAS and wondering how on earth that adorable puppy was ever cast as Evil Hyung, and now I can see why. (and he looks goooood, too). PHJ inhabited this role completely from his first moment onscreen, but I was disappointed at his lack of screentime until this episode finally gave us the key to what makes him tick. Now bring on the good stuff!

The baby bit was adorable but this patient-of-the-week scenario is a bit.....tedious? It's as bad as the ghost-of-the-week in Master's Sun, only that was pretty firmly focused on the romance once they got about 6-7 episodes in so that covered for the structural weakness (and also, better OTP in that case).

As for Soo-hyun's OTP, I have no idea and just want her to be happy. She has great chemistry with both LJS/PHJ and the drama is kind of yanking everyone's chains at the moment by inserting all the Hoon/Soo-hyun skinship without a single genuine indication of romantic interest on either side. But I do find their friendship very cute.

Slow clap, Lee jong suk, slow clap.

You make this otherwise all over the place show grounded to one moment that is your anguish and what it means to be a doctor.
If am buying it all and I care, that is because of your acting and not the story.

His acting got me completely won over. I'm honestly really very amazed by his acting, how he managed to portray Hoon's character as such a jovial one on surface but his anguish and pain when it comes to what he really feels.

Someone just give him all the awards. It's by far the best acting I've seen in dramas this year. He makes it such that ParkHoon is him, it makes me forget that he's really not like that irl. I'm just, wow-ed.

At end, its gonna be a simple plot. Don't make yourself complicated show. Dont .

This show is so confusing and misleading. It angers me that all this while LJS has been showing his passionate love for JSY but then all this teasing with kang sora's character happens out of the blue?! WRITERS WHY U TEASE ME LIKE THIS? I would gladly buy the JSY/LJS ship if only the girl had more than one expression. Here we have LJS acting his heart out and then she comes on and .. meh. I think the reason why a lot of people ship soohoon is because kang sora's just a better actress. She gives much more life to her character. JSY can't sell it even with two roles.

I am 100% on the Hoon/Jae-hee ship, but right now I am more convinced she is dead. I agree it is rather hard to love an enigma, but she was sweet during the North scenes I thought. However, in the end I will love whoever Hoon loves, that is the truth of every episode so far.

"I think the reason why a lot of people ship soohoon is because kang sora’s just a better actress. She gives much more life to her character. JSY can’t sell it even with two roles."

That is exactly what is happening.
JSY is making it easy for Sora, I wonder how it would be if someone else was playing JH/HS role.

True.

But the lack of emotion on her face makes her even more mysterious, which JSY's role requires. It's not really helping though. If she showed as much emotion as Sora does, JH wouldn't look so obscure.

That at least woudn't make us so confused.

Oh! Thank God! I was so disappointed when I watch the preview for this episode because no Kang Sora! Happy with the SooHoon moment!!!

But I think the writer/ditector finally realize that Jin Se Yeon don't have the x factor to become a lead actress just like in Inspiring Generation.

Her acting is not that bad, but not good enough to be a lead role. Supporting role?

Maybe.

Ironically though she was a far more endearing character in IG than her female counterpart gaya. And now, she's casted on a reverse-similar role as gaya is in IG. The cold approach really isn't clicking for her nor for many actress. This is perhaps there is less occurrence of such character in dramaland. It's just that hard to sell.

Do all doctors look so hot and sexy in a singlet? drools...

LSJ never disappoints me with his acting. He's getting better and better. He cries...I cry and his pain and anguish really hits you so hard.

Now that we know Jae Joon is the orphan, wonder if his realationship with Hoon will change when he finds out who his dad is. I mean, Park Chul did try to help his family by taking out the medical malpractice suit against the hospital. Jae Joon should be old enough to understand what was happening then with the sudden disappearance of Park Chul, etc. Hopefully Jae Joon will join hands with Hoon to take down the evil forces...

Wow, I did not see Jaejoon's birth secret coming. Now I'm just so confused by everyone's intentions and all the possibilities. It's so ironic that Jaejoon and Hoon are competing to operate on the Prime Minister when both of them have probably wanted to kill him. (What makes the Prime Minister so eager to have Hoon as his doctor anyway? I mean, seriously, WE know Hoon is a good guy, but what can the PM use to guarantee Hoon won't kill him? Is that maybe how Jaehee/Seunghee is involved in this?) Anyway, it makes Jaejoon and Hoon great potential allies, but I suppose the show is going to make Jaejoon what Hoon would've been if he turned to the dark side, and Hoon is going to have to take the higher moral ground and save the Prime Minister.

On one hand, I'm super-excited for this drama to solve all its convoluted mysteries by the end, but on the other hand, I'm afraid that it's going to leave me hanging in massive confusion...

You know what would be totally cool? Based on what we have seen, Park Hoon's enemies are Jae Joon's enemies. What if they discover it early and team up and do some serious damage?

Honesty, this ship war thing is pretty silly. I don't really care who he ends up with. Whatever writer/director wants for him is fine with me. The meat of the story is elsewhere.

I am looking forward to all the other stuff.

However, while I am all for the revenge stuff, I am not so much into bring the whole hospital down but more into bring those who hid the whole thing and actively participated in making PH's and PH's dad's life a living hell down.

I do not want the revenge to be disproportionate. I almost feel what happened to Jae Joon is less atrocious than what happened with PH. But from Jae Joon's perspective, he lost his parents due to malpractice. So, I can understand his angst.

Perception of loss has to be measured by the person who loses. So, I should not judge who feels bigger loss.

But, these two main leads actually have a reason to collaborate, even if it is to destroy.

I really liked this episode, now that we've moved on from "WHERE IS JAEHEE I NEED TO FIND JAEHEE" and I hope we never ever go back there. Which is good because for now, PH has established that SH is indeed JH and we can move on to explore the other parts of his story. Things are moving forward, and we're getting answers to things. I like that.

I've never been a fan of politics but if all these politics are going to help bring out the dark in Hoon - the pain and anguish he has been suppressing under his jovial cover - sure, bring that on any time. I love how he broke down in front of his dad's belongings and how he just lashed out at Dr. Choi while trying to put up a strong front. How he had so much pain but he didn't want to show it. I want more of this. MORE. How he actually always loses control of himself when they talk about his dad, JH or how it is like to be a doctor - I like how he always has such a big reaction. Because under his nonchalant facade, those are giving him a lot of pain, and I want to see his pain. (I really like it when he falls into despair because of his dad)

At this point, I don't really care about the romance and love line anymore. I don't care who he ends up with, and I figured I liked episodes which didn't deal with that. PH can end up alone and I really wouldn't mind that. I'd like to see Hoon/Soohyun to see how Soohyun actually helps and supports Hoon. And now that PH decided that SH is JH, I want to see how he is going to respond to that. It's not even about the romance anymore. It's about Hoon.

We've seen how PH actually changed Soohyun. I wonder if he's going to change JJ too. If JJ realizes that PH had actually gone through the same thing - if not worse - as he did, but that PH isn't blinded with anger and revenge.

wow. lee song juk .
wonderful performance through so far but this particular episode was just on point. very moving, i completely bought his anger and heartache and internalised pain.

dr moon is so amusing, he's really growing on me aha.
his relationship with hoon is quite adorable too what with the whole master/ owner & pet (though its really Hoon that wears the pants there).

i quite like how the pace of this drama as been, constantly moving but also spending the required time for necessary developments etc ... but this whole conspirarcy theory is really bugging me. not even close to undertstanding why PM must have Hoon as the surgeon.

and i wonder why it is significant that both SooHyun and that
north korean ex captain spy guy (sorry mind blank on the name) where looking at the same condo.

and im curious as to what jae joon is planning. his character really intrigues me but the logic of revenge is lost on me. like - I'm to work really really hard become super awesome and skilled (and good looking) go back to korea and work my way into myungwoo hospital, becomes the hospital chairman by marrying the 'princess' and then ... what have my revenge by bringing it down?

also random but is it just me? i really cant take director choi seriously. he has this semi comical expression alot of the times and his hairdo seems very mad scientist - esque. (maybe it is just me)

thanks for the recaps!

It's quite plainly obvious that Seunghee is Jaehee. And it's most likely that Jaejoon is the orphan.

Lol at the shipping wars right now. I think Kang Sora is an amazing actress. And Lee Jong Suk is just ... no words...he's amazing. He really makes the show interesting, and only because of him do the ridiculously intertwined story lines work. They really bring their characters to life. As for PHJ we've yet to see him in many scenes, or to see his personal backstory, but so far his acting is great. I think that a lot of the negative response to JSY's acting is a tiny bit exaggerated. Yes, she doesn't show many different facial expressions (this could just be her as an actress) but it luckily seems (at least to me) to be in character. She's a spy who's gone through a lot - she can't show too much emotion, particularly when around Hoon, and who knows what other factors played a part in her current psyche. Hopefully as the show goes on, we'll see her more tormented or we'll see her with some awesome scenes. While the disproportionate screen times between JH and Soohyun do make me confused but I reckon Soohyun's storyline is the whole other side of the coin. Besides, if Soohyun were the lead actress (as in OTP) I think her value in the show would be less important. Right now, she's a strong, independent, moral woman, who is confused as to what she wants, and I don't want her personality to change into a pining puppy.

My poor shipper heart! In some scenes it feels like you can tell that she still loves Hoon e.g. her jealousy when Soohyun/Hoon roll into bed, when she places the blanket on Hoon, when she stares at him while he's drunk and doesn't move her hand away, or even in this episode when she appears to trust Hoon with her medical records (all I can remember for now). But she hasn't had enough scenes - which is cool as it adds to the mystery - but it really makes me curious as to what her real intentions are & how she'll react in the end.

I really hope that Soohyun will heal Jaejoon. I think Jaejoon will go down the dark path and lose to Hoon, but that Soohyun will end up helping Jaejoon become a better person. Even if Jaejoon is ambitious, I think he still does love Soohyun even if he doesn't admit it. I don't want Jaejoon to be alone at the end :(

Also, the whole series wouldn't make sense if PH/JH don't end up together. Hoon's father dies so 1. Hoon can leave DPRK and also 2. so he can be with Jaehee (just the way he looks at them when he sees the ring). Also PH's desperation when he's looking for JH convinces me he won't just give up on her or love Soohyun the same way. So I think JH and PH will clash over surgeries and morality, but that slowly PH will bring back the best in JH.

Sorry for the long post :)
Love this show <3 Hope the ratings stay on top!

Agree with you. Its true that LJS, KSR, PHJ is good. But it doesnt mean JSY is not good. When she was JH she bright and I can see how she really love Hoon. I knew there so much facial expression for So Ra, because her character opened and fun. Its different with SH who has many secret. Her smiles looks fake because she has many hurts in his heart. She totally like Hoon who desperatelly love and cant forget JH. But try to cover it with big smile. How can she laugh when she worry about her life and Hoons life. If you saw her eyes you can find how much her pain, when she looks Hoon-Hyun together. Even you switched SH character to So Ra, or Hyun character to JSY, they will not good as we saw now. So I think its cruel when anyone say JSY meh or she can't act, she/he just hate JSY. I think if in the end SH/JH died Hoon never changed her love interested to Hyun. Sorry for shipper Hyun-Hoon but Hoon just symphatized to Hyun like what he did to Chang Yi, it never be a love. Call me naive, but in kdrama first love never be changed with someone else.

Oops, I'm back again. I forgot to mention that Hoon's attitude after the hug with Seunghee, how he smiles and jokes around with Soohyun and contrast it to how he was moping around when he believed that Seunghee might not be Seunghee, seems to indicate that it's her.

Interestingly enough, Soohyun has some similarities with Jaehee as well as some stark differences.

1. For example, in the shot of her and Hoon's hug, her fingers were twitching but not closed.

2. That parallel when Seunghee and Soohyun were both making calls. (Also is the sliding door meant to symbolise something deep? And the way Soohyun can only stare?)

3. The way Soohyun pinches and drags Hoon's ear is reminiscent of Jaehee in DPRK.

What I've become sure(r) about:

- Seung Hee is Jae Hee. Hoon knows and that's enough for him, he figures she's hiding it for a reason, and that reason may well be so she can stay close to him. He understands that playing along with her means they get to be together for now.

- Jae Joon is the orphan boy. That's why he's so wary of being actually in love with Soo Hyun (which I didn't understand previously. What's wrong with being in love with your conquest? But he wants Myung Woo and Soo Hyun to destroy them out of his revenge, so he can't actually love them—now that makes sense).

- Director Choi is a "good guy," but he's naive.

What I'm excited to see:

- Jae Hee's real feelings about everything she's going through now. I think she's acting, to protect Hoon.

- What happens when Hoon and Jae Joon figure out they have the same enemies. Clearly, Hoon's had enough of killing/destroying people, while Jae Joon hasn't even gotten started. I think that'll wreck any potential bromance.

- Whether Jae Joon's real feelings for Soo Hyun will win out and be his saving grace.

- Seeing Jae Joon address the fact of Soo Hyun being Chairman Oh's daughter out of wedlock. Does he even know? Does he know and think, "still his daughter, I'll destroy her too"? Or does he know and plan to use it to turn her against her own father?

- Soo Hyun coming face to face with her father's own greed and lies. Will she in fact turn against him, like she does against her brother? Will that align her with Jae Joon? Will she resume politicking of her own? (After all, we only see her simpler, purer, kinder side because of Hoon; before he showed up, she was clearly politicking for her own survival, so she's capable of it.)

- Nightshade going solo and showing his cards. Clearly, he likes Hoon. Except with regards to Hoon, he's been hugely loyal to Jang. How's that going to square out?

What I really hope will happen:

- Hoon go for Soo Hyun instead. Seriously! She's awesome! (probably won't happen :()

- Jae Joon change for good because of Soo Hyun/Hoon

What I still don't understand:

- Why would Premier Jang want Hoon to do his surgery?! He could kill him on the table! (He wouldn't, because of his conscience, but Jang doesn't know that!)

- Why would Director Choi want Hoon to do Jang's surgery?! Why would he want/expect Hoon to operate on the man who sent him to N.Korea?!

- Why would Chairman Oh want Hoon to do Jang's surgery?! See the last 2 points.

- Why would Agent Cha and Jae Hee/the N.Korean powers-that-be want Hoon to do Jang's surgery?! Do they plan to incite him to kill Premier Jang? Or do they plan to have him be successful, then reveal that he was left for dead and trained in N.Korea to embarrass S.Korea?

- What happened in the missing 2 years? How did Hoon get to be accepted into S.Korea, while Jae Hee got picked up and sent back to N.Korea with Hoon's knowledge? Wouldn't he just have assumed her dead or missing in another country that didn't have to be N.Korea? (Didn't her body get carried away by a Hungarian river?! As far as I know, rivers from Hungary don't deposit people in N.Korea. -.-")

... This show might be building itself up to be too confusing at this point to be satisfying when it untangles. Digging a deep hole here, Show... the Big Reveal's is at high risk of feeling horrifically simplistic and fall flat.

Found a quote about soulmate. What do you think?

“A true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave. A soul mate’s purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, and make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life.” ~Elizabeth Gilbert

I really hope dr. Quack and dr. Park hoon will end up together. Just saying. Please don't get mad. Hehehe.

Great quote from E. Gilbert. Relationships are choices that we make. Two might be destined to meet but it does not mean that they have to live together or date or marry.

Sometimes KDrama is fixiated on first loves.,,, I do not know why. Even our first love ended up as a bitter experience, we can learn a lesson, move on and find a better person in future.

I really hope we'll see more Hoon and Seunghee/Jae Hee interactions. I'm ok with soo hyun, but i just can't let go of the love hoon has for jae hee. They've been through too much not to be together

Where's the dog?

No dog??

This show needs a dog, perhaps a North Korean Chihuahua smuggled in that is Jae Hee's real reason for being in South Korea - the bad spy guy told her the dog was here..

Father and son scene made me cry for the second time. Damn it.

On another note, the Baby CPR scene was a little overdone? No? I have watched aplenty medical dramas and I can say that Hoon's CPR on the baby was a little different from all the other scenes that I have watched from other dramas. Lol. On the flip side, I find it sexy as well. Man saves tiny baby? Of course swoon.

Although I love Dr. Park to be with Dr. Quack, I need a reason for him to like her. Or did I miss it? I wont be surprised if he ends up with Spy Girl though.

yeah i think jaejoon is that little boy hurt from the malpractice suit, because he did say "mother and father, just wait?" so is he like wanting to take over the hospital to seek revenge for what the hospital did to his parents?

Maybe he just doesn't want to rule the castle, but destroy it.... who knows... revenge dramas usually have bitter endings...so I guess jaejoon is no exception!?

His story only would be interesting if he came out of it with a peace of mind. Revengy thoughts and actions are destructive enough.

First show since MLFAS to consistently make me squeal and generally be all kinds of noisy while watching. This episode especially had me going.

Thanks for the recaps. This show is really amazing. I love how it brought back a throwaway scene like the malpractice suit from the first episode and made it into another (major) storyline. Ahhh... I can't even... I just love the writer/s. I'm going to google them right now.

I'm utterly confused. So who operated on the patient back then? Was it really dad or is dad taking the fall for director choi or is it someone completely different? Gahhh

director choi was the one who operated. thats why his going to america to apologize to the orphan-then-adopted son of the deceased patient he operated.

This is getting interesting. Quack is goddamn fierce!! She could portray a loving, vulnerable daughter yet a kickass when she needed to. I love Hoon's childish acts and his superhero saves and his (heart fluttering) winks but why doesn't he dress properly. Come on a racer tank under a white coat? I get it he played the 'i-don't-care-what-you-think-of-me' kinda role but in hospitals I don't think you could just toss your coat anywhere let alone wear heavily-ripped jeans and tanks there.

lol "strange world" is being too nice. the translation I've watched was "Crooked world".
which i find more suitable. its kinda scary when the show portrayed it especially when they sent jong suk to the labs they look like they turn ppl to zombies.
but like who wouldnt go crazy when u are used to the democracy world with technology summore (cant live without techs) and end up in a no freedom world.
so sad.

I thought the same. Jae hee isn't given that much screen time to prove that she is the main female lead while Soo hyun has. In most of the k-dramas I've watched, the main leads are easily identified and made known from the very beginning. I didn't see Jae hee as the main lead from the beginning. Soo hyun on the other hand fits as the main female lead to me. Thats just what i think.
