Song Yoon-ah returns to television with Mama

Song Yoon-ah has taken her time getting back to dramaland (having gotten married and become a mother in the past several years), but she’s signed on to her first drama series in six years; her last was 2008’s popular showbiz-centered drama On Air. The new show is an MBC weekend series titled Mama: Nothing to Fear, and she’ll play a single mother who receives the diagnosis that she’s terminally ill. (Hm, sounds a bit like Song Yoon-ah’s previous movie Wedding Dress, where she played the mother to a young girl who was dying of cancer.)

Her character is a famous folk artist who would be leaving behind a son, and the drama will depict motherly love and tears, as well as a unique friendship between women. How unique? Well, apparently the heroine is so afraid of leaving her son with no family that she decides to create one for him before she dies. Thus she goes in search of her ex, who is now married, and ends up striking up a friendship with his wife. Sounds like a quirky way to twist what could be an straightforward premise.

It sounds like the kind of drama to go right for your heart (and tear glands), although depending on how the story is painted, it needn’t necessarily be a depressing tearjerker. I’m thinking of dramas like Thank You or Scent of a Woman, which involved dying/sick leads but had a lot of uplifting moments and messages to portray. Then again, there are others like Thousand Day Promise or A Rosy Life which are designed to be angsty and depressing, so there’s that. But the wife-friendship angle gives it a fresh angle, and dramaland could always use more stories of strong female friendships.

Mama will be written by Yoo Yoon-kyung of daily dramas Everybody Cha Cha Cha and Women of our Family, and directed by Kim Sang-hyub of Level 7 Civil Servant. Um. I’m trying to remember that that drama was a failure more because of the writing than the directing, but let’s be honest, there were mistakes made all around. Mama will follow Hotel King, which puts its premiere in August.

I loved her so much in On Air (overacting and all) and also in Noona, the MBC show. She has a likable quality.
That said, this pitch... Huh! Too melo for me. I'll wait and see.

***I loved her so much in On Air (overacting and all)***

And I vowed to never watch her again in anything. Her facial mugging composes the entirety of her acting ability!

I pretty much have a high tolerance for shrill characters, but hers takes the cake in 'On Air'. I'd sometimes skip her parts or put my tv on mute.

Not a fan of hers from Hotelier or On Air. Didn't see any charisma. Too much of a "girl/ajumma next door" quality. Too boring for me.
Terminal illness Again. Pass.

I find the overacting endearing, as if the character itself were meant to be that way, whiny, high- pitched and all. Plus, I've met people like her in real life ...

So glad, someone loves SYA and On Air :-)

Perhaps, I'm one of the few people who appreciates her overacting for the character. Glad that I see a few people who share this sentiment of mine

If it is in the same vein as Thousand Day Promise, i will definitely need to space out the episodes. That drama was awesome with great acting from the leads, but too painful to watch in one seating. I took a long , long time to complete the drama T_T

On Air was one of the first KDramas that I watched, so I remember it and her fondly. But, ECha3's plot was a mishmash and went on too long so I'm not too crazy about the writer.

I thought the same thing. I thought she and Susan Sarandon made it quite moving and heartfelt.

When I see a reference to L7CS on DB, half of me cringes while the other half swells with pride at how awesome Dramabeans Nation was during that whole palava. And I always remember the wonderful fan art it inspired!

Happy to hear this news, i've been waiting for her return to tv.... She is such a great actress, I cried a lot with Wedding Dress, however if this drama gets to be as touching as the movie, I will definetely watch ...well, with her as the main lead I'll still be watching it

Goodness Gracious, did I shed a bucket of tears watching Wedding Dress. It was a very sweet movie and I didn't have a problem with her acting there. I don't think I could handle a whole drama about the same topic though. But yay for more positive female friendship!
