Book giveaway: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

This is a little out of the ordinary for us here at Dramabeans, but we thought we’d offer it up to you guys anyway: We have three copies to give away of a young adult novel, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, written by Korean-American author (and drama fan) Jenny Han, which features a Korean-American heroine and is centered around a contract romance.

This is not a book about K-dramas, but it sounded kinda right up our alley so girlfriday and I gave it a read and both really enjoyed it. I found it sweet and clever (I love young adult novels, I love romance, and I love dramas—the book hit my sweet spots), and we’re happy to have free copies to send your way for three interested Dramabeans readers.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before features a half-Korean high school student as the protagonist, Lara Jean; she’s the middle sister of three, and together they call themselves the “Song girls” after their mother’s surname. The plot gets going when Lara Jean’s love letters—the ones she writes to boys she’s been in love with, never intending for them to be sent—get mailed accidentally (horrors!), and what ensues is a really cute, funny story of contract dating, love triangles, bickering couples, sisterly bonding, and growing up.

Aside from the cute romance and touching family moments, I have to say I was really happy to read about a Korean heroine in a novel where her Koreanness is a clear presence without the novel being all about her being Korean, if that makes sense. And despite not having anything explicitly to do with Korean dramas, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t picturing a few dramaland actors in the roles, thinking this would make a cute TV series.

TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY:

Leave a comment below, sharing your favorite K-drama that includes contract dating. (Author Jenny names My Name is Kim Sam Soon as hers. I might have to pick Dal Ja’s Spring for mine, even though it only barely qualifies for contract dating.)

Be sure to leave a valid email address, since that’s how we’ll get in touch with winners.

Deadline: Thursday, April 17, at midnight PST. We’ll announce winners shortly thereafter.

If you’d like to buy the book instead, it was just released by Simon & Schuster today so it’s now available.

(This post is not sponsored and we weren’t given anything to do it; we just liked the book and were offered the chance to give it away to our readers. And who could complain about free books?)

I've noticed a trend with Full House.
But I concur wholeheartedly.
Full House was the first korean drama I've ever watched. I moved to a new town where i didnt know anyone in the middle of my junior year in a VERY cliquey high school, you can only imagine my strong desire to not join any clubs or activities needless to say my afternoons were spent home. I stumbled across the channel AZN one afternoon and there it was the first episode of Full House. I was instantly hooked and basically made a friend in this show. It sounds corny but after it ended I felt better about making new friends and soon enough I had my own clique.

Mine would also be My Name is Kim Sam Soon, it was my first Korean drama too so it holds a special place in my heart. A close second would be My Girl.

I really liked Goong (great pairing) and have fond memories of Dal Ja's Spring (I remember being fascinated by her perm and eyeliner, and also Lee Min-ki), but they both are easy to like. So in the end I elect Que Sera Sera my choice of contract dating drama. QSS was one intense ride and changed the way I watch dramas nowadays.

It's still fresh in my memory, so Master's Sun. Gong Hyo-jin and So Ji-sub were wonderful together, and I found Tae Gong-shil and Joo Joong-won to both be fascinating characters in their own right. Plus, a contract that necessitates skinship? Brilliant!

I LOVE contract relationship dramas! I think my two top favorites would have to be two that don't really get much love.

First - Lie to Me. I know, not highly rated, and not the best plotted. But I just loved Gong Ah-Jung, and somehow related to her (except the lying about having a wealthy boyfriend part). And I love me some Coke kissing (even though I shudder at the thoughts of cleaning up that mess!).

Second - Accidental Couple. So sweet. I get tired of the dramas where the man is the haughty/jerky/selfish guy who says rude things and always gets the nice girl in the end. I loved how Gu Dong-Baek was so devoted to Han Ji-Soo, to the point of being self-sacrificing. And I loved it too when he started to stand up for himself. And I especially loved how their relationship was built on kindness and appreciation, rather than a fiery battle of the sexes, which, while often enjoyable, seems rather overdone. So tender. So melty. It actually made me think differently about the kind of guys I'd want to date.

Winner - Accidental Couple. By a smidgeon.

Can I only pick one?!

Personal Taste, Dalja's Spring and Kim Sam Soon are all great, but if I can only pick one... it's going to have to be Stars Falling From the Sky. After all, the only thing better than a co-habitation scenario is one where all of the heroine's cute rainbow-color-named younger siblings tag along.

My favorite contract marriage drama would be..The Prime Minister & I !!! I loved the awkward situations the leads were put in and how the family got 'healed' by Nam Da Jung and her cheery attitude toward everything. This drama had a unique story that made me love it so much. I experienced so many emotions while watching this drama..anxiety,anger, & happiness. The chemistry between the leads was very good too. :)

Of course Full house was the first thing that came to my(most people's) mind when if comes to contract dating.
It got my heart pumping hard (might be due to rain's hot body) and it was also one of my first kdrama

But I thought I preferred goong more!
Without rain but we have shin yo!
He was hot too!
The contract marriage which the 2 hated, melted our ice prince's heart.
It was a fusion of traditional and modern story.
That's like the plus part of the story.
I like how they were so cute either squabbling or with eun hye's cute parents (not forgetting her bro who always call her sis pig) HAHAHAH
I really like how shin protects eun hye in the end when he realized that he loved her

My Name is Kim Sam Soon all the way!! I guess the author and I have similar taste haha.. I totally think this is Kim Sun Ah at her finest and the chemistry with Hyun Bin is incredible!!
I'm still hoping til this day that they'll get together again for a new drama or movie :D

This was my first drama on contract relationships and I've gotta say, it was one really fun ride! Nice to know a Korean-American author introduced a similar concept in her book! I would loove to read this!! And just like u javabeans, I can see myself imagining dramaland actors as all the characters if I read this lol..

I haven't watched too many dramas (I'm new to dramas!) with contract dating (erk. marriage), but I guess my recent favorite would be the "Prime Minister and I". It was fun and sweet with likeable characters, even though the ending was not my favorite. The only other drama I can think of is "Goong", which started off hilarious but started dragging as it progressed. Also that prince guy is such a jerk.

On the other hand, I'm excited about Jenny Han's new book! I've read her "The Summer I Turned Pretty" trilogy (which apparently is being made a TV show). I'm glad she decided to write a Korean-American character this time.

PS. To my other beanies, any contract dating/ marriage dramas I should watch as a kdrama newbie?
Full House is one my list for when I finish these blasted final exams.

This book sounds adorable! I want to read it!

Does the drama "1% of Anything" count?? I watched it almost a decade ago but I feel like a contract was involved... I remember that the grandfather required his grandson to marry the school teacher in order to get his fourtune. It was so adorable and I loved the girl's family dynamic. :3 I also remember watching it with my parents and they enjoyed it as well.

What to choose? I love all contract dating/marriage dramas but for today, I am going to choose Kim Sam Soon. I happened upon KDramas quite by accident, and it didn't take me long to become addicted. Of course, an addict is inclined to share such addiction so my sister is my addict in crime. We are middle age mothers who only allow their kids to watch KDramas after school because they either have to read the subtitles, or glean Korean from watching tv (and I much prefer watching said shows over the kid friendly cable channel fare). Ha! Kim Sam Soon is the first KDrama my sister and I watched together, laughing, giggling, smiling together late at night after the kids were in bed. In love with romance, in love with sassy characters, in love with the humor . . . it is easy to get caught up and lost in the fun of a good, good Korean Drama.

This is so awesome! I love Jenny Han's books and k-dramas so I kinda shrieked when I saw this on here. I'd love a copy (who wouldn't?!)

My favourite would be Kim Sam-Soon like Jenny Han, since it's one of my all-time favourites anyways.

Thanks for the contest! :)

Would What Happened in Bali count? It's been so long since I've seen it that my memory's kinda fuzzy about it. It was the first time I saw Ha Ji Won, Jo In Sung and So Ji Sub in a drama or anywhere actually. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Please send a copy my way! Huge reader over here.

Lets see favorite contract dramas... Well that is a tie between My Name is Kim Sam Soon and That Fool. MNIKSS because it was my first contract dating drama, my first Binnie drama, my first Kim Sun Ah drama. I mean this drama sent me on a KSA spree! Love that woman. Second is That Fool. Yes it is full of flaws but I find it sweet (bromance!). They are always my go to dramas when I'm in a drama funk.

ok I haven't watched this drama for a long long time but I really loved watching "Delightful Girl Choon Hyang" when it aired on TV. Their bickering was funny even if you already knew they liked each other. I should watch the show again XD

The King 2 Hearts was my favourite contract marriage of the sorts that was the most memorable!! :) Lee seunggi and Ha jiwon were both so badass and funny trying to be hostile towards each other in the beginning, but when they got to know each other.. they just had so much chemistry!! :')

Can't wait till finals are over soon!! need to catch up on so much dramas and books this summer.. ><

It would have to be Kim Sam Soon.
I haven't been able to go six months without a rewatch.

The contract written on the napkin gets me every time with its naive designs to keep it strictly business. HA!

It was one of the earlier dramas I watched where the heroine actually had a backbone and would stand up for herself. My Lovely Kim Samsoon is by far my most favorite contract marriage/dating drama. And not only for that lovely setup but because Kim Sunah was truly amazing as Kim Samsoon. Man was that woman committed or what?

Hopefully I find my Hyun Bin one day... hahah but I'll leave that for dramas :)

I was surprised to see Jenny Han's book on the dramabeans page. I thought it was an error or something but glad it is not! I am also glad you two enjoyed her book, I am excited for it as the cover is not only gorgeous but the premise is intriguing. Plus, Jenny Han's other novels are great too.

My favorite contract dating drama is Full House, an oldie but a good one. A classic for me! It was one of the dramas that got me back into the fandom of dramas.
