Book giveaway: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

This is a little out of the ordinary for us here at Dramabeans, but we thought we’d offer it up to you guys anyway: We have three copies to give away of a young adult novel, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, written by Korean-American author (and drama fan) Jenny Han, which features a Korean-American heroine and is centered around a contract romance.

This is not a book about K-dramas, but it sounded kinda right up our alley so girlfriday and I gave it a read and both really enjoyed it. I found it sweet and clever (I love young adult novels, I love romance, and I love dramas—the book hit my sweet spots), and we’re happy to have free copies to send your way for three interested Dramabeans readers.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before features a half-Korean high school student as the protagonist, Lara Jean; she’s the middle sister of three, and together they call themselves the “Song girls” after their mother’s surname. The plot gets going when Lara Jean’s love letters—the ones she writes to boys she’s been in love with, never intending for them to be sent—get mailed accidentally (horrors!), and what ensues is a really cute, funny story of contract dating, love triangles, bickering couples, sisterly bonding, and growing up.

Aside from the cute romance and touching family moments, I have to say I was really happy to read about a Korean heroine in a novel where her Koreanness is a clear presence without the novel being all about her being Korean, if that makes sense. And despite not having anything explicitly to do with Korean dramas, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t picturing a few dramaland actors in the roles, thinking this would make a cute TV series.

TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY:

Leave a comment below, sharing your favorite K-drama that includes contract dating. (Author Jenny names My Name is Kim Sam Soon as hers. I might have to pick Dal Ja’s Spring for mine, even though it only barely qualifies for contract dating.)

Be sure to leave a valid email address, since that’s how we’ll get in touch with winners.

Deadline: Thursday, April 17, at midnight PST. We’ll announce winners shortly thereafter.

If you’d like to buy the book instead, it was just released by Simon & Schuster today so it’s now available.

(This post is not sponsored and we weren’t given anything to do it; we just liked the book and were offered the chance to give it away to our readers. And who could complain about free books?)

It has its many flaws, but the chemistry between the leads and the love between thecouple just stole my breath away.

Hi guys, Kim Sam Soon is my favourite contract dating drama ever and is one of the first Kdramas i ever watched. I don't think i will ever forget the scenes in which Sam Soon danced to 'it's raining men' doing the crazy shimmy thing on the table in the noraebang and the stuffed pig she wins which haunts him and he kept trying to get rid of the whole drama but couldn't - my stomach hurt so much from laughing. I loved how she didn't change for him because she didn't need to and there was no big makeover. She was perfect exactly as she was. Kim Sam Soon is one of the best Korean drama heroines in my opinion and it will always be my favourite contract dating kdrama!

My Name is Kim Sam Soon is hands down my favorite one. I have a soft spot for this drama in general, because I had watched it back in 2005, while it was airing in Korea. This was my first time back in my motherland after leaving to study in the states in 2002, so it was definitely a memorable drama that contributed to my fun (and humid) summer all in all. I remember watching it from 7th episode onward (and had missed Sam Soon and Sam Shik's first kiss(?!?!?!!?!?!!!!!)) but then ended up rewatching the whole series a couple weeks later.

My current fave as of now, I have to say Wonderful Days. Maybe mostly because of the effect of the magical chemistry between LSJ and KHS. Those two burn with chemistry that makes my heart aches so bad and makes me want to kidnap them and drop them in a remote island so they could just concentrate in making "crater-dimpled babies" *grin*

And I like that the contract relationship come with all the baggage of their past relationship. This is the first time in my kdrama viewing experience where the contract relationship serve as a chance to heal the wounds instead of a nice plot point to bring the otp together.

Maybe I am just slayed by LSJ's dimples that even if he just stand there without uttering a word, I would still melt into a pile of goo, haha...

Hey

So i know K-dramas have lots and lots of rom-com contract dating and there are just so many i really like. So instead of naming one of the comedy ones, i think i will name Marrying a Millionaire starring Go Soo and Kim Hyun Joo. Although i started watching the drama for Go Soo whom i find immensely attractive and talented, the drama just grew in me. His character had a certain innocence and warmth and even though i love Kim Hyun Joo, i couldn't help but hate her for treating him so coldly. That lasted for some time and then i loved her again! Heehhehe

One of my favourite dramas is Goong, It also had a contract marriage in it. I also loved Sweet 18 because it was a classic and bit more traditional.

But between the two I still like Goong more. :D

It's interesting that most Korean dramas have common themes of either contract dating or a fatal illness that brings two star-crossed lovers together. Picking my favorite contract dating drama is also like asking me to pick out the best from a very mediocre bunch. Nonetheless, my favorite contract dating drama is 1% of Anything starring Kang Dong Won and Kim Jung Hwa. It is also the very first Korean drama that I watched and because it was such a fantastic show I continued to satisfy my insatiable craving for Korean dramas, which serve as an outlet for me to isolate myself from reality and embrace my never ending fantasies. 1% of Anything contained themes reflective of modern society: a passionate woman fulfilling her own dreams symbolizes how much women have progressed to gain this freedom. However, when Jung Hwa encounters Dong Won she slowly starts to lose her freedom. The fact that the two dated through a contract almost foreshadowed their future relationship to be a contract-like even though the legality part was taken away. The contract is a restriction on Jung Hwa's freedom to continue working where she wants and also shows how Dong Won is dominating the relationship as a stereotypical male. In today's world, relationships are established in a similar fashion. Although it seems like women have come a long way to reach this point, men still have absolute control. This drama compared to other contract dating dramas really struck me as realistic and because of that, I empathized with the characters much better and felt more connected. The conflicts felt real and much more personal and this allowed me to enjoy the drama to my heart's content.

I was going to say Empire of Gold. But that feels like cheating(?), since there was no actual romance between the two leads.

So my pick is...

Delightful Girl Chun-Hyang! One of my first real favourites. It seems like forever ago, haha.

And of course, thanks for the giveaway! :)

I would have to pick...Que Sera Sera! It was such a unique drama aside from the typical love triangle. The drama had such an intense way of portraying the characters love for one another that it just stood out to me the most out of all the dramas. It made me want to root for the contract dating between the 2nd lead and main girl...half the time ^^ and then change back to the main lead. And to top it all, I absolutely loved the music used. You could tell it was well planned and intentional. It had its saddening and stalkerish moments for some of the characters but it somewhat had a happy ending.

what a weird coincidence, my young adult book love and kdrama love crossing paths haha. i love jenny han and i read an excerpt of this book and already knew it'd be right up my alley! i have to say that i don't watch many contract marriage type dramas, is My Girl considered one? if not, i'd have to go with Full House as my default, since it's the only other one i've watched lol.

Contract marriage/dating... one of my favorite genre despite being so cliche. I haven't posted in dramabeans for a while and only stayed silent reader, but heck, for a chance at a free book, my inner nerd is jumping all around in excitement, telling me to take the chance.
First of all... there's too many, and some of my personal favorites only include a small part of contract in it... but I guess I might have to digress. First of all, there is Sassy Girl ChunHyang. Well... there weren't a clear written like in Full House, but verbally, those two came to an agreement to fake their relationship. Then, there is Goong. Oh boy, was I crazy over that. Technically, no written contract, but verbal agreement, coming more from him. Heck, Shin was definitely one of those lead where you hated before you start to love, but again, that's just my opinion.
BUT, if I had to choose just one, hands down, the full blown contract drama that I love would be My Name is Kim Sam Soon. HOW can one not love that drama? It had the right amount of romance and comedy to hook one to the screen. I laughed, cried, and laugh some more at the hijinks that occurred.
Anyway, that's my entry, and good luck to all. *Been a while since I was able to get my hands on a new book. XD*
