Ha Ji-won leads trio of badass fighters in The Huntresses

It’s been quite a year for Ha Ji-won; perhaps her streak will continue into the new year with her upcoming sageuk comedy movie The Huntresses, which releases later this month (aaaaaaah it’s 2014 already). (The title is literally translated as Joseon Trio of Beauties, which is decidedly clunkier than its English-language title, so we’re goin’ with The Huntresses.)

The movie looks like a blast of fun, not only because it features Ha Ji-won kicking ass (my favorite way to see her) but also because it’s got a goofy sense of humor and a quirky sensibility. It’s over-the-top, but in a light-hearted way—nobody’s gonna be watching this one for the historical accuracy, that’s for sure.

The trailer below starts out with an animated sequence introducing our main trio, who are the top (and first female) bounty hunters of the times—you mention a cash reward, and they’re there to get a piece of it. Ha Ji-won plays the leader, the all-around fighter and sword-wielding Jin-ok, while Kang Ye-won is the “housewife swordswoman” Hong-dan. Sohn Ga-in (or merely Ga-in, per her idol persona) is giving acting a crack as the “tough girl” of the group, Ga-bi.

The trio were originally bounty hunters tracking down criminals, but in this movie the plot gets going as they go on the hunt for a missing artifact. The laughs’ll be bolstered by Go Chang-seok (Good Doctor, Face Reader) putting in another comedic turn—and in case you’re wondering who that dark pirate-y looking dude is, it’s Joo Sang-wook (Good Doctor, TEN). (I know—I did a double-take too.)

The Huntresses will release later this month.

2nd: I hate comparing korean movies and shows with the american ones (I really do) but this time I couldn't ignore the similarities here ... watching the trailer, I immediatly thought it's like the movie "charlie's angels" and what is more I'm reminded of a childhood anime "totally spies" and "cat's eyes"...

Even if this show was like any of the aforementioned, at least it's a show with an all female leading cast *girl power!

LOL But regardless of the dissension, I have to say, I AM REALLY REALLY STOKED—and still a little in awe at the fact that it's already 2014, like what?!

To be honest, I think it purposely took on that inspiration of female power that is often showcased in shows like Charlie's Angels, Totally Spies and such. I see no issue with it and I also think it is a good idea since I'm sure that the Korean audience might have experienced growing up one of these shows. For instances, the older generation of females would know Charlie's Angels from the 70s and 80s, as well a younger group of females will likely know the movie adaptation. Not sure if the cartoon Totally Spies were aired in Korea since it was aired on a sister channel in Korea, it likely did. Therefore, even younger girls can reminisce about the strong female bonding through this movie.

I swears, you took the words right out of my mouth. watching the trailer, I was like 'hello Korean Charlie's angels'. not that there's anything wrong with Charlie's angels, loved the movies to bits. and totally spies is one of my favourite girl power cartoons ever. I love seeing Ha Ji-won kick some tush a la Kim Hang-ah. I'm holding out on Empress Ki because my friend and I want to marathon it together. love HJW loads and I hope this movie is a huge success.

Uh, yeah, well, of course it is a take-off on the Charlie's Angels movies! Never occurred to me that it was anything else, and I expect that the writer would say the same, if someone asks him after the publicity campaign is over with.

I personally thought the Charlie's Angels movies were dumb and unimaginative, so I'm looking forward to this one. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, and the script pretty much has to be better than the movies and the original American TV series, which had pretty girls but stories and dialogue as generic as TV could get back in the 70s.

This movie was supposed to come out six months ago and it is presumably a bad sign that it spent that much time in post-production limbo.

Never the less, my question, in the couple of dozen times I've watched the trailer, is the same as it was in August:

WHAT IS THAT GUY IN CAMO SAYING TO THE HUNTRESSES IN THE LAST SCENE OF THE CLIP?

i was staring at JSW's picture and thought to myself he looks familiar, so i kept staring until i recognized the lips. When i read your post, i was happy that i'm correct. I just finished marathoning the Kimcheed Radish Cube, hahahah (from finish to end, i was wondering why it is titled so).

I wish JSW and HJW will have their own kdrama =).
